The Orioles entered the final day of the trade deadline just 2.5 games out of a Wild Card spot and, instead of making a run, sold off Adley Rutschman, Taylor Ward, Dean Kremer and Tyler Wells for a solid haul of prospects. The trades themselves weren’t necessarily the problem. The problem was waving the white flag with what largely amounts to AAAA replacements on a team still within striking distance of October . The offense responded by going ice cold, scoring just 11 runs in six games before suddenly exploding for 10 today in a 10-5 win over Texas to pull within two games of a playoff spot. Naturally, that means they probably won’t score again until Wednesday. That’s Orioles baseball. The Orioles gave us one of the most exhilarating weeks of the season, and one of the most confusing. They took two of three from Detroit behind an epic comeback that may go down as the greatest in franchise history considering the stakes, followed it up with another dramatic comeback win over the Phillies, and then immediately crashed back to reality with consecutive shutout losses. Add in the surprising trade of Dean Kremer for an A-ball outfielder, mounting rumors involving Adley Rutschman, Taylor Ward, and Trevor Rogers, and a front office that has remained quiet while the rest of the American League arms race intensifies, and Baltimore enters the trade deadline just two-and-a-half games out of a playoff spot with more questions than answers. The Orioles managed to go 3-3 on the first two legs of their West Coast road trip, dropping 2 of 3 to the Mariners while suffering their first shutout loss of the season in the process, and then taking 2 of 3 from the World Champion Dodgers. The Orioles went 3-4 this week, but the record hardly tells the story. After going 2-for-22 with runners in scoring position against San Diego, getting blown out again in one of their losses, and looking completely lifeless in Sunday's loss, Baltimore now heads into a daunting West Coast trip through Seattle, Los Angeles, and Anaheim. The Orioles are hot! They welcomed the Rays into town and exacted some sweep revenge, taking all 3 from their division rival, before splitting 4 games with Toronto. The Orioles salvaged the series finale in Oakland on Sunday after dropping the first two games, finishing the week 3-4 overall. Now they return to OPACY for a 3-game set against the Yankees, just one week after being swept in a 4-game series in New York. The players continue to preach patience and confidence, but sitting five games under .500 in mid-May, heading into another matchup with a division rival that has already looked clearly superior, is far from what the decision-makers in the Warehouse envisioned this offseason. The Orioles...ugh! Same number of losses on May 3rd, 2026 as they had on May 3rd, 2025. Gunnar Henderson has the third most K's in the American League. Tyler O'Neill has 1 XBH. Colton Cowser went from 5th overall pick and ROY runner-up to 5th outfielder. Jackson Holliday and Jordan Westburg haven't sniffed a big league diamond. A 3-3 week for the Birds against teams with two of the worst records in baseball. The Royals gave them all they could handle, but the Orioles managed to eek out a series win. Then Boston, and a 6 HR, 20 hit performance by the hometown boys in a 10-3 win in game one, only to be undone by a 17-1 loss Saturday and a lifeless 5-3 defeat Sunday. To make matters worse, Boston was ripe for the picking after firing basically their entire coaching staff, including manager Alex Cora, but the Orioles still fell flat on their faces, save for Gunnar and Basallo. The problems still abound: starting pitchers can't locate, Pete Alonso can't hit, and the offense runs stagnant. Different series, same issues. Will it ever end? As we said last week, what a difference a week makes. The Orioles looked awful all week, losing 5 of 7 games to Arizona and Cleveland. In fact, the only two wins required 4+ run comebacks in the 7th inning and beyond. They don't hit early in the game, they play shoddy, fundamentally flawed defense, and most of the pitching staff has seemingly never heard of a shutdown inning. May the 4th be with you, because it certainly isn't with your Baltimore Orioles. They get good pitching, they still can't hit, and when they finally hit, their pitching gives up 7 HR to the team with the fewest HRs in all of baseball. To put it in perspective, prior to Sunday, the Royals hadn't hit 7 HRs in any week of the season, and they hit 7 on Sunday afternoon, a game the Orioles lost 11-6 despite hitting 4 HRs themselves. What is there to even say at this point? The Orioles are playing their worst baseball in 4 years. The pitching is terrible, the offense is somehow worse, and there appears to be no end in sight. Yet, somehow, nobody has been held accountable and no consequences have been rendered despite the fact the team is 52-63 in their last 115 games dating back to June 24th.
