Good Mourning is the podcast about grief that shines a light on what loss is really like with honesty, hope and humour. Hosted by Sally Douglas and Imogen Carn, we cover all elements of loss and grief, interviewing inspiring guests to help listeners feel seen, heard and understood. We laugh, we cry (and drop the occasional f-bomb). Listening to this grief podcast is like sitting in on a no holds barred conversation over a glass of wine, about the grief process, with two very good mates.
Grief is the price we pay for love, but it can be lonely. If you need extra grief support, join our community on Instagram at @goodmourningpodcast or head to www.goodmourning.com.au.

What happens when we die? It’s the question many of us ask. We’re joined by one of the world’s leading experts on Near-Death Experiences, Dr. Bruce Greyson, Professor of Psychiatry and Neurobehavioral Sciences and author of After: A Doctor Explores What Near-Death Experiences Reveal about Life and Beyond.
Bruce has been studying NDEs for over 50 years. In this absolutely fascinating conversation, we talk about how Bruce came to study this topic, what he’s learned from studying thousands of cases, the stories that have blown him away, and why he’s no longer afraid of death.
We hope you enjoy it and that it brings you as much insight and comfort as it did us.

In today’s conversation, we are joined by author, co-founder of Modern Loss, and all-around “grief veteran”, Rebecca Soffer. As witty as she is wise, she knows a thing or two about grief – by the time she was 34, both of Rebecca’s parents had died a few years apart. We talk about how grief is a sneaky btch, and to manage the fear and anxiety that can manifest when it creeps up on you, especially when multiple* people die within a short space of time.

In today’s episode, we are exploring all things widowhood and what it’s like to find love again after losing your significant other. Our guests Nikki Shah and Nick Kelly met and fell in love after both being widowed years apart, and they joined us to candidly share their experiences.
Nikki’s partner, Mike, died from cancer in January 2018. Nick’s wife, Nicole, died in January 2020 from a rare form of cancer, leaving Nick to be a single parent with their young son, Xander. As well as sharing their personal experiences with grief, we cover so many elements including what it’s like to date again, managing the opinions of others, and introducing children to new partners.
We discuss:
This was such an informative and eye-opening conversation. We hope it provides an insight or interesting perspective, whether you are looking for love or supporting a parent, friend, or family member who is widowed.

In today’s conversation with renowned grief expert and author, David Kessler, we explore the concept of “acceptance” and what it really means.
No stranger to grief, David lost his son to addiction in 2016. He candidly talks about how to cope with feelings of shame and guilt that can accompany this type of loss. We discuss feeling pressure to create purpose from pain and pick David's brains about what finding meaning in loss actually looks like. Spoiler alert – it's much simpler than you think.
He also breaks down some of the misconceptions surrounding the ‘Five Stages of Grief’. Having co-authored books with Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, who came up with the model, it’s fair to say he’s an expert on the theory.

✨ How shadow work can help to connect with yourself

This week we are joined by two incredible ladies, whose stories you won’t believe until you hear them. Ell Pullin and Lotte Bowser are two friends brought together by the unimaginable loss of their partners, world champion snowboarder Alex ‘Chumpy’ Pullin, and UK music agent Ben Kouijzer. Both Ben and Chumpy are known for their magnetic energy, their passion for life and music, and they have both left a huge imprint in the lives and hearts of everyone who knew them.
Shortly after Chumpy’s sudden death while out spearfishing in July 2020, Ellidy announced a miracle pregnancy with his baby after finding out about a procedure called postmortem sperm retrieval. After two rounds of IVF, Ellidy gave birth to Minnie Alex Pullin in October 2021.
Lotte recounts her harrowing experience of when she flew to Mexico in October 2020 where Ben was undergoing alternative cancer treatments to try and save his life. One morning Ben was rushed into hospital and separated from Lotte after contracting Covid-19. Devastatingly, this was the last time she saw him alive.
Lotte and Ellidy are also both experiencing cumulative grief, after losing their dads only a short time after their partners died. Their bravery and resilience is nothing short of admirable, and this conversation is one that we are both thankful to have been a part of.
We received loads of questions from our community for Lotte and El and have tried to include as many as possible. We also discuss:
Prepare to be inspired by these two incredible women.

Today’s fascinating conversation on finding balance in grief is with Mary Hoang, Founder and Head Psychologist at The Indigo Project, an online psychology practice that thinks creatively about mental health.
She is also the author of Darkness is Golden, a book that explores the painful parts of our lives that we tend to gloss over, like grief and trauma.
Mary shares so many profound nuggets of wisdom throughout this conversation. A key message from this episode is how important it is to take a break from grief and not let your loss define you. She shares why it’s key to find balance, which isn’t always easy, but something we need to do when processing loss.
Mary shares her perspective on how to cope with numbing distractions that might be holding up our healing. We discuss the two-factor model of grief that many of us can identify with, which is either distracting ourselves from grief or leaning into grief too much. We also explore why a loss might bring up other unmet grief and the psychology around why we don’t easily allow ourselves to feel joy when we are grieving.
We had a big “A-HA” moment around this, so make sure you tune in all the way through, there are some wonderful insights in this conversation.

Today’s conversation is a powerful one. Dr. Edith Eger is a Holocaust survivor, psychologist and expert in the treatment of post-traumatic stress. At 94 years old, she has some incredible words of wisdom, courage and comfort to share.
No stranger to grief and trauma, Edith and her family were sent to Auschwitz in 1944 when she was only 16 years old. She has gone on to share her incredible story of trauma, resilience, hope and survival in two bestselling books:The Choice and The Gift. Her work provides powerful lessons on healing and the power of choice and hope – things that many of us need after experiencing loss.
In this thought-provoking conversation, Dr. Eger shares her wisdom on how we can help ourselves heal from traumatic experiences in life and why the key is in our pocket. We discuss the gift of forgiveness, the importance of not being a victim in life and how you can find hope in hopelessness, plus much more.

Today we are talking with director and producer, Tahyna MacManus, about her experience of having multiple miscarriages and the grief that comes with early pregnancy loss.
Even though 1 in 4 pregnancies will end in miscarriage, this type of loss can feel like a taboo to talk openly about. After experiencing her first miscarriage in 2017, Tahyna began filming her feature documentary Misunderstandings Of Miscarriage (MuM), which documents her personal journey to understand the physical, emotional, and psychological impacts of miscarriage.
In this deeply personal conversation, we discuss the disenfranchised grief associated with baby loss and how society doesn’t always acknowledge it – even though it is something that many women experience. We talk about how Tahyna overcame her feelings of shame and isolation, tips for partners, and how as a society we can better support and approach this important topic.
Whether you have experienced baby loss or want to support someone who has, we hope this conversation will comfort, educate and inspire you.

Today we are talking with the ever-inspiring Kelly Terranova. Kelly’s mum, Jenny, has Huntington's Disease, which is an incurable degenerative neurological disease that is hereditary.
Nothing is off-limits in this chat as we discuss Kelly’s experience with anticipatory grief – a topic that we know has impacted a lot of our listeners but isn’t as widely discussed. It occurs before death is common among people who are facing the eventual death of a loved one, or their own end of life.
It’s an incredibly difficult thing to watch someone you love slowly decline in health – something that Kelly is very open about sharing.
In this candid conversation, Kelly is incredibly open about the realities of anticipatory grief and seeing her mum decline in health and change over time. She shares how she struggled to come to terms with her mum’s diagnosis, how she put off getting tested, and how she had to hit rock bottom to rebuild her life. She also share some tips and advice for those supporting someone caring for a loved one.
For anyone who is experiencing anticipatory grief, this conversation is for you.

We’re celebrating one year since we launched the Good Mourning podcast...and what a year it’s been!
We thought we’d record a special anniversary episode where we interview each other about our grief and share a little bit about ourselves. We get a lot of messages from our community asking about our backgrounds and where we’re from, so we thought we’d spill the tea on our personal journeys.
We also share some exciting news about a project we’ve been working on with one of our community members that we can’t wait to bring to you all soon.
From the bottom of our hearts, thank you all for your support of Good Mourning this past year. We love you all and appreciate you being with us along this griefy journey.

We are joined by TV presenter and actress, Lauren Brant Hall, who shares how her sister-in-law, Sandy’s cancer diagnosis and recent passing have reshaped her life’s purpose.
We talk about what it looks like when you're supporting a family member facing the end of their life. Lauren tells us how she made it her mission to give Sandy the best mental and spiritual support in her last month of life and what that looked like, including a surprise marriage proposal and impromptu wedding.
We talk about all things signs and how Lauren connects with Sandy spiritually. We share tips on how to ask friends and your community for support – something that isn’t always easy to do when you’re grieving. We also discuss the importance of having a “grief sesh” and how to process all the feelings that come with a loss.
Sandra’s dying request was to spread awareness of both what a gift life is and raise awareness of testing for bowel cancer, something that Lauren is doing beautifully.
Be prepared to be moved and inspired by this enlightening conversation.

Guys, we are back with Season 3! To kick things off, here is our conversation with Leslie Kean, investigative journalist and New York Times bestselling author of Surviving Death: A Journalist Investigates Evidence For An Afterlife, which also inspired the hit Netflix documentary, Surviving Death.
We talk to Leslie about her fascinating exploration into whether consciousness survives death and discuss the research and evidence that shaped her belief that consciousness lives on after we die.
Throughout the discussion, we delve into both Leslie’s research and her personal experiences with signs and mediumship, which both played a transformational role in her journey connecting to the other side. As well as her personal experiences, we discuss the fascinating case studies in her book that look at near-death experiences, reincarnation, receiving signs and mental and physical mediumship.
It is such an incredibly profound and enlightening concept and we both took a lot of comfort from this conversation with Leslie. We hope you do, too!

This week we are joined by Rebecca Jax to talk about sibling loss, and the importance of releasing trauma that is trapped in your body.
Rebecca shares her story of losing her younger brother, Jack to suicide, and how this experience was a huge catalyst for her healing journey. We talk about how to navigate sibling loss and why it can sometimes be a lesser acknowledged form of grief.
She shares how she had to hit rock bottom and take herself to the depths of what Jack felt, and how from there left everything behind to spend years on a spiritual journey, learning about somatic healing and how to heal the spirit, mind and body. Today, Rebecca is a trauma informed grief and suicide loss mentor, guiding suicide loss survivors through their healing journey using holistic healing art forms and spiritual principles.
What is fascinating about Rebecca and this conversation is how she has used her experience not only to help others, but to help heal herself. She shares how we can release trauma that becomes trapped in our bodies after a loss, how to connect with our loved ones spiritually and energetically and how to ask for signs.
Whether you are experiencing sibling or suicide loss, or are simply interested in learning how to heal your body from trauma, this conversation will educate and inspire you.

We are joined by New York Times bestselling author and founder of the Motherless Daughters movement, Hope Edelman, to discuss her latest book, The AfterGrief: Finding Your Way Along the Long Arc of Loss and why grief isn't something to get over, get past, or move beyond.
We discuss how grief can ebb and flow but this doesn't mean that we're 'doing it wrong’ and why grieving may be a lifelong process, it doesn’t have to be a struggle.
We also dive into Hope’s own personal experience of becoming a mum after losing her mum when she was 17, how her grief has evolved over time, and how we can reframe the experience of mothering without a mother.

The day is here! We are pumped to bring you our conversation with one of Australia’s most highly rated psychic clairvoyant and spiritual mediums, David The Medium. As a psychic medium, he has the ability to connect with spirits in the afterlife, and is able to receive messages and provide incredible comfort for people grieving the loss of a loved one.
In this episode, you’ll hear all about how David became a psychic medium, his beliefs about what happens when we cross over, receiving signs from our loved ones, and how we can nurture our own psychic abilities.
We were both incredibly lucky enough to have a session with David shortly after the recording, and in the intro, we debrief on our own personal readings, which were nothing short of mindblowing!
We also put the question out to our Good Mourning community about what you would like us to ask David in our interview, so tune in to find out if your question was answered!

In this episode, photographer Stepha Doyle bravely shares her story about what it was like to grow up with a parent with a mental illness.
Stepha’s mum, Coleen, was diagnosed with bipolar when Stepha was in her teens. After being hospitalised several times, she tragically took her own life, when Stepha was only 17 years old.
We discuss how she navigated a difficult dynamic, often feeling like a parent to her mother rather than a child, how she coped with her mum’s unpredictable behaviour, and how after her passing she found strength to keep going.
Through such tragedy, Stepha has discovered acceptance through self-expression and has created a life for herself that she loves, despite dealing with such tragedy early in life.

In this episode, we interview Rebecca Soffer, the Co-Founder and CEO of Modern Loss and Co-Author of Modern Loss: Candid Conversation About Grief.
When Rebecca was 30 years old, her mum Shelby, died in a tragic car accident one hour after dropping Rebecca home from a family camping trip. Four years later, her dad died from a sudden heart attack while on a cruise to the Bahamas, leaving Rebecca orphaned at the age of 34 and feeling “untethered from any foundation”.
Rebecca talks candidly about having to make the choice to live her life as richly as she could, despite being thrown into the depths of grief. She used her experience and her struggle to find resources that weren’t too clinical, to go on and create Modern Loss.
She also shares the importance of seeing the humour in the dark times, which is something that we both feel passionate about. Oh, and why we need to all stop saying ‘passed away’ and start saying ‘died’.

In this eye-opening episode, we interview Annie Horton, who is the sister-in-law of Broadway star and Tony Award-nominated actor, Nick Cordero. Nick died after an almost 100-day battle with Covid-19. He was only 41 years old.
Nick was a fit and healthy man, with no pre-existing medical conditions. Annie explains the harrowing reality of what it is like to witness a loved one fight for their life, and the devastating impact that coronavirus has had on her family.
We also discuss what it is like to grieve the loss of someone that is in the public eye, and how media speculation, sensationalism and unsolicited comments from online trolls, can be extremely difficult for family members to cope with.
Annie is unfortunately no stranger to grief. Over the past five years she has had to deal with multiple losses. Annie’s father Carl, died of a sudden heart attack, when he was away on a business trip. Annie fell pregnant shortly after the death of her dad and struggled with juggling grief and motherhood.
Annie’s grief manifested in health anxieties, which were starting to become debilitating for her. She talks us through how she had to work really hard to regain control of her life, as a result.
This conversation is important, educational and a must listen for anyone who hasn’t been directly affected by the devastating impacts of Covid-19.

In our last episode of 2020 we talk to someone very special: Elle Quintal...aka Imogen’s bestie! Not only has Elle been a huge part of Imogen’s life and an amazing support especially during her grieving, but she also has an incredible story. So it felt only right that we get her on to share it with you all.
Elle has known grief most of her life. She has been faced with adversity since a young age and is a living testament of turning your pain into pride.
Elle’s Dad, aka Bobby P, died in 2017 after a long battle with his health after he had a workplace accident when Elle was only 12 years old. She shares her story on what it’s been like having to grow up very quickly while caring for a sick parent and also dealing with the absence of her mother from a young age.
Elle also shares some amazing insights into dealing with a parent’s substance abuse and coping strategies to keep yourself grounded through uncertain times, and how to let hardships become a bright source of light in the world for others to turn to in times of darkness.
She’s a wise and wonderful human and there are so many inspiring nuggets of wisdom we hope you’ll take away from this enlightening and heartfelt conversation.

In this episode we talk to Stu Henshall, friend of the podcast and all round funny guy, about his experience of losing his mum Pauline, to cervical cancer when he was nine years old.
Stu talks about what it was like to navigate his grief as a young child and during the 26 years since, and how he coped with his sexuality and coming out, without his mum there for support. He shares how he has coped with the festive season over the years - which can be tough when you’re grieving - and how to support a bereaved child around Christmas time.
We also discuss how intergenerational trauma from grief and loss can impact families for generations and what it has been like for Stu trying to break that cycle.
Oh, and why every festive season needs a bottle of gin and a Kylie Minogue soundtrack!

Trigger warning: this episode covers the topic of suicide.
