Who are you when the uniform comes off?
In this episode of Unarmored Talk, I sit down with Angeletha Long, a U.S. Army veteran of 24 years and leadership strategist, to unpack one of the hardest questions veterans face after service: Who are you—really?
We go beyond the surface of transition and get into the identity shift that happens when the structure, mission, and title you’ve lived by are no longer there. Angeletha shares how this question showed up in her own life, how mental health counseling became a turning point, and why so many veterans struggle in silence trying to redefine themselves.
This conversation challenges the idea that identity is something you “find.” Instead, it’s something you build—through changing your environment, taking small steps, and surrounding yourself with the right people. From isolation to community, from overthinking to action, this episode offers a practical and honest look at rebuilding purpose after service.
If you’re navigating life after the military or questioning who you are beyond what you did, this episode will help you start answering that question with intention.

In this episode of Unarmored Talk, I sit down with Rachel Singletary—minister, facilitator, and leader—to talk about what obedience really looks like when your calling demands growth, discipline, and time. We get honest about the refining process people don’t post—the part that humbles you, stretches you, and challenges your relationships.

In this episode, Marine Corps couples Joe and Jennifer Worthy, and Casey and Ashton Kroner, share the reality behind colon cancer, testicular cancer, remission, and the grind of chemo. This is the side of cancer you don’t see—shock, denial, constant appointments, and the strain of trying not to lose your identity as husband and wife while cancer pushes you into patient and caregiver roles.
We break down veteran cancer risks—burn pits, Gulf War exposure, Camp Lejeune water, asbestos—and why one question from a doctor, “Have you ever served?”, can change everything.

Wondering What You’re Actually Worth at Work?
In this Unarmored Talk Pro Tip episode, we break down how to determine your worth at work without ego or guesswork. This conversation focuses on clarity—using market-backed information to make confident decisions in reviews, negotiations, and career moves.
We start by separating identity from market value. Your worth as a person isn’t up for sale; the market pays for outcomes. From there, we cover how to research compensation by comparing roles, scope, and responsibility across your industry—because data beats hope.
Finally, we define the importance of your minimum acceptable offer. When you know the line that protects your peace, growth, and financial goals, decisions become clearer and negotiations become calmer.

Have you ever felt the weight of a career transition and wondered if you were falling behind?
On this episode of the Unarmored Talk Podcast, I share a different perspective: when transition feels heavy, it’s not failure—it’s awareness. It’s your nervous system paying attention because the moment matters.
I walk through three practical pro tips for navigating career change, job transitions, and identity shifts—especially for professionals, service members, and veterans. The focus is simple: move from pressure to progress without losing who you are.
I explain why fear isn’t weakness but information, why your value extends beyond titles and income, and why you don’t need a life plan—just the next right step. Small, consistent actions build momentum, reduce stress, and restore clarity.

What if clearer thinking, steadier balance, and deeper sleep start in your inner ear?
In this episode, I sit down with Sheila Thelen, coach and founder, to unpack how vestibular training—originally refined with elite figure skaters—now helps veterans improve sleep, athletes recover from concussions, kids with ADHD sharpen focus, and older adults reduce fall risk.
Sheila explains the powerful overlap between rehabilitation and performance, breaking down four areas where people see results quickly: balance, cognitive processing, spatial awareness, and sleep. We explore why “spin sports” train the brain differently than linear movement, how short, precise vestibular drills can calm the nervous system, and why sleep loss can quietly push people toward crisis.
Along the way, Sheila shares real-world stories of recovery, resilience, and purpose—and why she chose impact overstaying in her “lane.” The science is deep, the tools are non-invasive, and the path forward is practical.
If you’ve dealt with brain fog, balance issues, spatial confusion, or restless nights, this conversation offers a grounded, hopeful way forward.

Ever wonder how a Republic of Korea Recon Marine ends up passing the bar in the U.S.?
Minjoon Kim’s journey—from freezing Korean night hikes to earning his place at a California law firm—proves that grit and legacy outlast hardship. His path shows how discipline, humility, and a deep respect for family history can reshape an entire trajectory.
He brings us into recon life: brutal weather, relentless training, and the humor that kept both ROK and U.S. Marines pushing forward. The rations may have been questionable, but the standard never was.
Off the battlefield, Minjoon reflects on leading with kindness, tuning out the noise, and why the strongest Marines never start with “I.” Legacy—Korea, Vietnam, Desert Storm—became his compass more than rank ever could.
Stay unarmored, stay authentic, and stay mentally fit. And as always — I’m praying for you all. God bless.
Key Takeaways🔥 Key 1: Hardship Builds Strength - Cold hikes, harsh summers, and Recon training shaped a resilient mindset.

What happens when your job, identity, and future disappear overnight?
In this episode, we sit down with Aaron Hale—a Navy chef turned Army EOD tech—to unpack his journey from an IED blast that took his sight and hearing to rebuilding a life defined by purpose and action.
Aaron shares how trauma fractures identity, how community at Walter Reed kept him grounded, and how shifting from “I can’t” to “How can I?” changed the trajectory of his recovery. He walks through his arc from cooking for a three-star admiral to volunteering for Afghanistan, then learning to kayak, run marathons, and climb a 19,000-foot peak without sight.
We also highlight his entrepreneurial path and his Point of Impact podcast, where he continues serving by sharing lessons forged in adversity. If you’re ready to trade excuses for momentum, this conversation will move you.

Snap judgments happen fast—often before a single word leaves your mouth. In this episode, we unpack the 55-38-7 rule—body language, tone, and words—and explore how nonverbal communication shapes trust, credibility, and connection.
You’ll learn how subtle cues like crossed arms, poor posture, or lack of smiling can quietly work against you—and how to rebuild confidence through open posture, steady breathing, and natural eye contact.
I also share a quick self-audit method: record short mock conversations, review your posture and tone, and ask for feedback. The takeaway is simple—people may forget your words, but they’ll remember how your presence made them feel.

Taylor Vogel thought the Marine Corps would give him structure when life had none. After three deployments and a devastating IED blast, he survived but came home unraveled—TBI, PTSD, a bottle within reach, and a family on the line.
This isn’t a polished comeback—it’s a raw story of drifting without roots, wrestling with faith 🙏, and learning that surrender and daily discipline can rebuild a life.
Taylor shares how surviving a hundred-pound IED led to the question: “Why am I still here?” He reveals three levers that helped him rise again—
💪 Habits that keep the body and mind honest
💭 A mindset that turns “I have to” into “I get to”
🎯 Actions that bring purpose back home
From isolation to service, from numbing to presence, Taylor’s blended family of nine proves that loss can lead to abundance.
If you’ve ever felt “so low a mosquito won’t bite,” this conversation offers a way out—start small, reach out, and let purpose do its work.

What if the title you’re most proud of is the very thing holding you back from who you’re meant to become?
That’s the heart of this powerful conversation with Marine infantry officer turned pastor and Mighty Oaks Foundation CEO, Jeremy Stalnecker. From leading Marines in the 2003 push to Baghdad with 1/5 to leading a church in Oceanside, Jeremy opens up about anger, dislocation, and a misplaced identity that nearly cost him his marriage and his calling—until trusted mentors stepped in with hard truth and hope.
We unpack what it means to be a leader instead of just doing leadership, and how faith reframed Jeremy’s view of the Marine Corps as a noble chapter—not a permanent identity. If you’ve ever felt stuck between who you were and who you’re becoming, this episode offers clarity, courage, and perspective. The uniform comes off, but the mission continues.

The invisible weight of service doesn’t end when the uniform comes off. For Marine Corps veteran Garrett Biss, the toughest battle began after 17 years of active duty—asking, “Who am I without my uniform?”
In this powerful conversation, Garrett introduces the idea of the “dichotomous ego,” where service members are lifted by their role yet driven by constant criticism. When the uniform is gone, many retain only the inner voice saying they’re never enough—fueling anxiety, depression, and even suicidal thoughts.
Garrett shares how embracing authenticity closed the gap between who he was and how he showed up in the world. His message to veterans: choose what truly fills your inner void, not just what numbs it temporarily.
This episode is a must-listen for veterans, loved ones, and anyone seeking to understand the hidden struggles of transition. Don’t miss Garrett’s insights and his TEDx talk, “The Unspoken Trauma that All Veterans Face.”

✨ What if the number of breaths you take per minute could reveal your true path to healing?
🩺 Trauma expert Dr. David Rubenstein shares insights from over 22,000 measurements, showing that 19+ breaths per minute almost always signal PTSD, while 7 or fewer indicate optimal recovery.
His color-coded “red to green” framework provides an objective, unalterable way to track progress. For 🎖️ veterans, military conditioning complicates recovery—but healing becomes possible when reframed as a mission for someone they ❤️ love.

What if the key to healing pain and PTSD wasn’t medication, but your breath? 🫁
In this episode, Dr. David Rubenstein reveals how a discovery in 1994 reshaped our understanding of chronic pain, stress, and trauma. With over 22,000 measurements, his research shows how breathing patterns directly influence cortisol, sleep, and even trauma response.
Using gentle “motion recipes,” he helps the brain recalibrate 🧠—creating lasting relief instead of temporary fixes. Backed by university research, this breakthrough shows how one breath at a time can break the cycle of pain and stress. 🌟

What drives a decorated Army veteran to dedicate his life to saving troubled youth? For Craig Hannum, it was witnessing 182 suicides during his 20-year military career.
Determined to change the narrative, Craig pioneered a school-wide intervention strategy that turned 14 suicide attempts into zero the following year. His method? Training everyone—from teachers to janitors—in suicide prevention to build a shared language of support.
Craig shows teens both the hard truths and the hope. From juvenile detention visits to outdoor adventures, he teaches consequences and potential—what they could lose, and what they could gain.
The impact is undeniable: zero juvenile detention cases on military bases, zero alcohol-related incidents for college freshmen, and teens stepping up as peer accountability partners.
Craig’s message is raw but real: “This is not your last worst day. Your next worst day is coming. Are you ready for it?”

For Ottawa entrepreneur Sean Frost, it starts with refusing to compromise on passion. From music producer to real estate broker, Sean's journey was anything but linear. Despite early success in a contracting business, he battled depression until he returned to his creative roots.

Now thriving in multiple ventures—from real estate and custom home building to music and mentoring—a common thread remains: full presence and passion. “If I wasn’t 100% passionate, we wouldn’t be having this conversation,” he tells host Mario P. Fields.

Without knowing what he was getting into, he started a nonprofit in honor of Mary. Mary's Bridge nonprofit organization focuses on helping prisoners, from Lebanon Correctional Institution, Lebanon, Ohio, successfully reintegrate back to society.
Mary always made people feel loved and Rick wanted to keep her legacy alive. Please visit www.marysbridge.org to learn more.

In this episode, I am honored to host another guest willing to remove their armor to help others. This episode's guest is retired Air Force Veteran Lakeydra Houston. Lakeydra is a certified victim advocate passionate about giving survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence, and human trafficking a voice.
This episode uncovers Lakeydra's personal abusive experiences as a child and how those terrifying experiences resulted in disturbing behaviors as she grew up. Disturbing behaviors that were overlooked by family members and friends.
Her journey to help survivors first started when she was a military law enforcement officer responding to many domestic violence and sexual assault calls, and quickly learned that resources for survivors were not always readily available.
I hope this episode contributes to childhood abuse awareness and helps save children from abusive behaviors worldwide.
