Guilford County Schools (GCS) will be launching two, tuition-free virtual schools for the 2020-2021 academic school year. The two virtual schools will provide another option for the coming school year for families who have concerns about in-person, in classroom instruction for their children during the pandemic. Long term, the virtual schools also will allow students who thrive online, need a more personalized approach to learning, or those who desire a more flexible learning environment continue to receive a quality education.
Angelina Wilson and Kenneth Cates, Recruiters for the Tarheel ChalleNGe Academy. TCA offers our services to those students who are not faring well in the traditional school settings. Our free program includes a 5 ½ month residential phase, followed by a 12-month post-residential phase. While attending the 5 ½ month residential program, our students will improve their education level, life skills, and employment potential. This is accomplished by providing training in a structured, and disciplined quasi-military environment which enhances the program’s core components: Academic excellence, Life-coping Skills, Leadership and Followership, Responsible Citizenship, Job Skills, Service to the Community, Physical Fitness, and Health & Hygiene.

Anna Beth Williams is an Ag Agent with the NC Cooperative Extension Service in Guilford County and she told us all about the 2020 Local Foods Summit. The local foods summit is designed to educate individuals and organizations who share a common vision to support sustainable farms, local food businesses and consumers of local foods.
Vincent Webb from the NC Cooperative Extension Service in Guilford County tells us all about the new program for EMFV which stands for Extension Master Food Volunteer. This program provides NC residents the opportunity to engage with their communities by supporting NC Cooperative Extension programming in the areas of nutrition, cooking, food safety and food systems.
Stacey Finch is the Coordinator and Kevin von der Lippe is past chairman and on the board of directors for Greensboro/Guilford Crime Stoppers. They discussed some success stories from past Crime Stopper cases and they also talked about the origin of Crime Stoppers and how the program works to fight crime in the community.
We talked with Glenn about the plans for the Gateway Project, which will invest as much as $45 million in capital improvements as part of the 2020-2030 strategic vision. This will support approximately 460 jobs and generate over $80 million in economic impact during that 10 year period. We also talked about the new Aquarium and other new exhibits that have opened or are coming soon to the Greensboro Science Center.

Maya Franklin is the Communications Manager for the American Red Cross. Maya talked with us about the need for blood for those fighting cancer. Patients fighting cancer need more blood than patients fighting any other disease, using nearly one-quarter of the nation’s blood supply. That’s why this February, the American Red Cross and the American Cancer Society have teamed up to encourage people across the country to Give Blood to Give Time, ensuring loved ones have the strength and support to battle cancer.
Jennifer talked about the everything happening with the Triad American Heart Association in February which is Heart Month.
Redia Baxter is the Health Systems Director for the Alzheimer's Association. Just what is Alzheimers? Is it different from Dementia? What can someone expect if they or a loved one are diagnosed with Alzheimers? How does the disease end up being fatal? Redia also talked to us about the Alzheimers Association and what they can do to help people with the disease and their families.

She is very involved in the Alzheimer's Association - Western Carolina Chapter and also serves as a public policy advocate
The American Cancer Society of the Triad has a program called "Real Men Wear Pink Of The Triad." We talk with Stephanie Morris and Nick McNeil from the American Cancer Society about this program that involves men helping in the fight against breast cancer.
Kayt Stewart of Alternative Resources of The Triad is the co-chair of the Greensboro Pride Festival to be held 9/15/2019 in downtown Greensboro. Kayt tells us what we can expect at this years festival and how there is still time for vendors to sign up to be part of the festival.
Operation North State (ONS) is a 501 c3 non-profit (ALL VOLUNTEER) organization which currently offers eighteen (38) “unique” military support services programs for North Carolina's deployed troops and veterans-in-need. There is a second number related to the horrific stat of 20 veterans take their lives daily; and, we should all find this stat very troubling: Fourteen of these 20 veterans aren’t even in the VA’s system /on their radar.” WHY? We need to get these guys and gals on everyone’s radar - especially the VA's - support services are available and working.
Mandie’s Miles is a Nonprofit created by Michelle Manriquez in honor of her daughter Mandie. She passed away June 7th 2018 with brain cancer while she was a senior in High School. Mandie's Miles is an advocate for the Brenner Children’s Pediatric Brain Tumor Program, the region’s only dedicated program, offering experts devoted to treating children and adolescents with brain and spinal cord tumors, a patient-centered and collaborative approach, access to the latest treatments, and cutting-edge research. . With great determination and collaboration, we as a community, can create awareness for children, along with their families, in finding knowledge, strength, and hope. Guilford County Extension Agent Quina Weber-Shirk tells us about the Share The Harvest program. Share The Harvest is an all volunteer organization that exists to distribute donated produce equitably to those who are hungry in our community,
Community Gardens seek to bring together people in the community to grow fruits, vegetables, flowers and herbs on common ground. A school garden is an outdoor classroom: a living laboratory where garderns of all ages learn by observing and doing. There are currently over 140 community gardens in Guilford County.
Joey Hilburn is the President and Founder of The Grownups Benefit. The Grown Ups Benefit are a Christian based organization providing hope, love, and funds for families in our own community that are experiencing financial hardship brought on by a health crisis. We also provide Scholarships to deserving seniors from area high schools and fund Play it Forward, a program that provides sporting equipment and covers various fees for those families in which this would prove to be a hardship. We organize many events that enable people to live out our motto, Helping People Help Others.

They talk about the local FoodCorp initiative in the Guilford County Schools. Beginning in 1997, North Carolina was one of the first states to incorporate a statewide farm to school initiative that sources NC-grown produce for school meals. Today, the NCDA Farm to School Program reaches over 1 million children across the entire state, serving over a million pounds of locally grown produce each year.

Sgt James Copeland of the US Marine Corp is the local Coordinator of Toys for Tots Greensboro, which serves the communities of Guilford, Alamance, Person and Caswell Counties. In the 2014 Campaign we had the honor of being the Top District for our Region. During the 2016 Campaign, our community came together to support 12,082 children in need. All of our success is all thanks to our community.
Humane Society of Davie County (HSDC) is working in partnership with Davie County Animal Services (DCAS) at the Eaton Road building to save more lives of abandoned cats and dogs. The two organizations focus on the same goals: reduction in the number of pets surrendered and reduction in the numbers of pets euthanized by DCAS. HSDC now manages all pet adoptions through the building; HSDC staff also handles pet marketing. HSDC continues to offer access to spay/neuter clinic transport monthly.

Hurricane Harvey hit Plum Grove in Texas and the towns surrounding it in Liberty County hard. At one point, 24 inches of rain fell in 45 minutes. Guilford County lost 46 babies in 2015 – that’s close to one baby every week. While we have reduced the infant mortality rate from 13.4 in 1988 to 7.5 in 2015, one baby’s death is too many. Rescue dogs are trained as emotional support and service dogs for veterans who suffer from PTSD (Post Traumatic Stress Disorder) and/or TBI (Traumatic Brain Injury). We also facilitate training of Veteran's current dogs that have passed temperament testing. There is no cost to the veteran.
