Each week, Navy veteran and Journalist Phil Briggs looks at life from the military veteran's perspective. From topics like treating PTSD, TBIs with marijuana and psychedelics to pushing Congress to pass better laws. Plus, we hear dramatic stories from combat vets, discover job openings, and meet celebrity actors, athletes, and musicians
This week we’re highlighting the National Memorial Day Concert, airing Sunday, May 24, 2026, on PBS. One concert segment will focus on the 25th anniversary of 9/11 and will tell the story of Lieutenant General Patricia Horoho, one of the heroes at the Pentagon that day.
After joining the U.S. Army, she trained in clinical trauma nursing and was assigned to the Pentagon in August 2001.
Moments after terrorists crashed a plane into the heart of the DoD (only 100 yards from her office) she raced to the site and quickly emerged as the experienced leader.
Lt. Gen. Horoho shared a vivid look at the battlefield triage that followed and how with only a belt and the supplies in a medic’s backpack, she started an IV and treated her first of 75 wounded patients that day.
She also shared how 9/11 was not her only experience respoding to a plane crash.
From Afghanistan deployments to becoming the first woman and nurse to serve as the Surgeon General of the United States Army, Lt. Gen. Horoho shares examples of service, sacrifice and true miracles.
As our nation celebrates 250 years, we remember all those we have lost, and Horoho’s memories capture the pride of being American and the power of human connection.

This week we share our conversation with Army combat veteran, and Purple Heart recipient turned TV celebrity JR Martinez, about the inspiring podcast, “Medal of Honor, Stories of Courage”.
We begin with a closer look JR’s life, who went from surviving an IED attack and severe burns, to winning “Dancing with The Stars” and a role on the daytime TV drama “All My Children”. He shared incredible moments from his personal recovery, including how an off-the-cuff comment he made to comfort his mother, eventually became reality as he went from the hospital to Hollywood, eventually starring in national television shows.
Martinez also describes the true heroes covered in the podcast. Like tales of a soldier’s valor during WWI and the teacher who saved a student’s life.
The Medal of Honor podcast, from the acclaimed producers at Pushkin, gives all listeners inspiration during these challenging times.
Martinez also reminds us that while we hold Medal of Honor recipients in the highest regard, we all have what it takes to be a hero to others.

This week we’re hearing about a major mental health milestone for psychedelic assisted therapy, after President Trump signed a landmark Executive Order demanding research on alternative treatments for severe mental illness. We broke it down with Marcus Capone, Navy SEAL veteran, Founder of Veterans Seeking Treatment Solutions and an elite combat vet whose life was saved after his experience with the psychedelic, Ibogaine.
Capone describes how this Executive Order will impact the veteran community, the studies that show the efficacy of psychedelic medicine, and if the influence of Big Pharma will pervert research on plant-based medicines.
We also take a closer look at what psychedelics qualify for the Executive Order’s “Breakthrough Therapy” designation, and if that will become a hurdle that disrupts veteran's ability to get access.
Capone offers a glimpse at surprising connections between psychedelic medicine and God. And he shares the celebrity podcaster Joe Rogan played in getting President Trump to sign the Executive Order.

On Wednesday Apr 22 we remember the ultimate sacrifice of Army Ranger Pat Tillman who was killed during combat operations in Afghanistan. A unique Ranger in that he left a pro football career with The NFL’s Arizona Cardinals to join the Army shortly after 9/11, along with his brother.
On the evening of April 22, 2004, Pat’s unit was ambushed as it traveled through the rugged, canyon terrain of eastern Afghanistan. His heroic efforts to provide cover for fellow soldiers led to his tragic death.
Today we’re not only honoring his memory but also hearing how his incredible legacy lives on through the Pat Tillman Foundation. We’re joined by Tillman Foundation CEO Dr. Katherine Steele, and scholar recipient, Army veteran Maj. Bernard Toney Jr.
Steele shares unique memories of Pat and how the Tillman Foundation grew from donations to his alma mater Arizona State University, to helping high caliber veteran students complete college and become the leaders of tomorrow.
Army veteran Bernard Toney Jr. shares how he went from the Special Forces community (serving in the same area as Tillman, just 4 months after his death) to serving in The White House. And, how he hopes to make an impact in Public Health and improve the lives of Americans from all socio-economic backgrounds.

This week we’re checking out the Spring ski action in Snowmass Co, at the National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic. Every year incredible wounded warfighters gather for a week of skiing, boarding and the kind of healing only mother nature can provide. Our guest is Retired Army Major, Dr. Lisa Maddox, who overcame a leg amputation and proves that with the right mindset anything is possible.
Lisa Maddox describes the feeling of shredding the slopes on a mono ski, and how it fuels her passion. She also shares how her injury has never stopped her from becoming a nationally renowned adaptive sports athlete who loves skiing, pickle ball, basketball, softball and more!
We trace her journey from the guard changing ceremony at The Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in Washington DC, to West Point. She tracked her entrance into medical school and the rare medical condition that resulted in her leg amputation.
But losing a leg would never stop this Army veteran.
Maj. Maddox shares how, after her surgery, she continued to serve her fellow vets as an MD at the Augusta VA and competed in The National Veterans Wheelchair Games.
She’s also had some amazing experiences, including a cool story about attending the famed Masters Golf Tournament in her hometown of Augusta, and having a VIP view of the hit musical Hamilton.

We take a deeper look at the rapidly escalating War with Iran, with former Ranger, Special Forces and National Security writer Jack Murphy. We open with how veterans across the country feel about it, considering many have already endured decades of combat in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Murphy also discusses the news of Special Forces veteran Joe Kent, whose resignation from National Counter Terrorism Center stirred up controversy earlier this week. And he highlighted what some have called antisemitism woven within the letter of resignation.

This week we discuss Operation Epic Fury, with Army veteran and former SFOD-Delta, Lt. Colonel Brad Taylor. A veteran with years of covert operations experience, best-selling author and detailed researcher, Taylor looks at all sides of this war with Iran, which has broadened to a level not seen since WWII.
We begin with what initiated the US-Israeli attack on Iran, and the dangers the world now faces.
We looked back at Iran’s support of murderous terrorist groups, i.e., Hamas, Hezbollah, IRGC, Quds Force, and how Iran has been conducting asymmetric warfare for decades.

This week we meet Navy veteran John Gully, who went from Navy ships and sonar frequencies to a career behind the mic on radio frequencies.
Today he’s the Evening News Anchor for Prescott Tonight on News Talk Radio 103.5 FM in Prescott, AZ, but broadcasting was not his original plan.
Gully shared memories of his days aboard ship and what it was like being a Sailor during the Cold War era … and any dangerous encounters with Russians?
Gully revealed how after the Navy an impromptu attempt on the mic landed him a DJ shift at local radio station in San Diego. We discussed his career, how radio has evolved and why the owners dominating today’s media landscape have strayed from what originally made radio so popular.
We also discussed his latest project, Warrior Voices Radio, and Internet radio station designed exclusively for the veteran community. Gully shares how he and their veteran team are unafraid to break radio format rules, play whatever they want (over 3K songs in the library) and how they can help their fellow veterans host their own radio show or create a podcast.
Gully expressed how being on the radio took him on the journey of a lifetime, and how Warrior Voices Radio is there to help our fellow vets launch their own journey too.

This week we honor a fallen Marine, Lance Corporal Jared Schmitz, who was KIA during the US withdrawal from Afghanistan, at Abbey Gate in Kabul, on Aug 26, 2021.
Our guest is Jared’s father, Mark Schmitz, who founded the non-profit organization “The Freedom 13”. He shared his mission and details about the veteran retreat and recreation center being built on a beautiful 171-acre property in the heart of Missouri.
We begin with how Jared was born to be a Marine and how the way he lived his life inspired everyone who knew him.
Schmitz shared how Jared’s impact was felt around the world. In a story that reveals the highest level of heroism, he recalled how at a large event he had a chance encounter with an Afghan refugee, who spoke of being rescued from Kabul by a young Maine with “Schmitz” on his uniform’ name badge.
During our conversation we talked about the disastrous US withdrawal from Afghanistan and its impact on the veteran community. Schmitz described how his son and the others who served so bravely that day, inspired him to create a place where veterans, first responders and their families will always have a place to find comfort and healing.
We discussed the scenic property in Bourbon, MO, which will feature 13 buildings where vets and their families can stay. Plus a ton of outdoor recreation like; fishing, shooting, pickleball and even all terrain golf carts to explore more of the great outdoors.
Schmitz also shared his vision to eventually build more centers in all 50 states.

After Maddie Smith quit drinking, she just didn’t know what to do with her hands ... until she discovered Cross Fit and built her epic physique!
Now she’s a top contender for “Ms. Health and Fitness 2026”, and she’s doing it all for a veteran nonprofit.
We talked about how she overcame alcoholism, an eating disorder, and endured recovery groups that didn’t understand her trauma. Now, in peak physical condition she shared advice on conquering addictions and helping veterans through a partnership with Shields and Stripes, a veteran support program founded by Steve Nisbet, fellow athlete and Air Force Pararescue Specialist veteran.
Nisbet described the life of an elite “PJ”, conducting casualty evac missions in combat zones, the tragic death of a fellow PJ, the Army's betrayal and the emotional toll of his service.
But he powered through the pain and used his physical training expertise to create the acclaimed Shields and Stripes veteran support program.
The program draws from the type of sports therapy used by pro athletes and Special Operations teams and combines it with customized nutrition plans and therapy from experienced psychologists.
Nisbet described the incredible results attendees experienced at recent programs in Arizona and Florida, and shared stories of vets who no longer need the medications doctors said they couldn’t live without.
Smith also expressed her shared love of fitness as medicine, and what she will do if crowned contest winner, “If I win, I’m donating the $20K prize to the Shields & Stripes Foundation. I’m competing to break the stigma around recovery & mental health, not to win money. Giving the prize to a nonprofit founded by someone who rebuilt his life after tragedy & now helps others find their strength, means more than anything $20K could buy me.”

When Navy vets Joe Lloyd and Loaman “Nelly” Nelson served together aboard USS San Diego, they never dreamed they would be attending the Super Bowl. But thanks to the Wounded Warrior Project and Jacksonville Jaguars Devin Lloyd, this weekend, they’re living a football fantasy!
During Media Week, we swapped sea stories about ship life, port calls, and casinos, and lessons about what it takes to be a true leader.
Joe Lloyd shared how those leadership lessons helped him guide his son, Devin Lloyd, to become an elite college football player, a #1 NFL Draft pick, and a Pro-Bowl Linebacker with the Jacksonville Jaguars.
They described how, together with Devin, they served their fellow vets at Project Odyssey, a healing retreat that offers outdoor adventures like hiking, biking, rafting, skiing, boarding, and more.
Afterward, Devin Lloyd gave the coveted tickets to Nelly, and he described his call to Joe, announcing their epic road trip to San Francisco to attend the big game.
From leadership to fatherhood to a love of sports, these two veterans represent what it means to be a football fan and a friend!

The Netflix documentary “In Waves and War” reveals the stunning results of psychedelic therapy and how medicines like Ibogaine and 5-MeO-DMT are proving to help warriors overcome their demons, which all too often drive them to suicide.
Former Navy SEAL Chief Anthony Rivera completed this groundbreaking treatment back in 2020 and shares vivid memories from his experience.
We start with a gripping look at what life on the SEAL teams was like, and the troubling after effects of combat.
After attempting to fight the battle alone, Rivera was eventually convinced by a fellow team mate to undergo a powerful medically assisted session in Mexico, thanks to Veterans Exploring Treatment Solutions.

Military spouse Lisa Bradley co-founded the company and revolutionized the fashion manufacturing industry, by recruiting military spouses located across the country, to stitch together the bags in their homes.
Now, a multi-million-dollar business, we hear how this military spouse founded brand got its humble start in an attic.
From a small home-based endeavor, Bradley shares how she was inspired to enlist her fellow military spouses, who often have challenges finding reliable employment, to join the company.
After initial success, Bradley described how they scaled revenue, expanded operations and eventually made an appearance on the network TV show, Shark Tank.
Bradley spoke about working with business icon Mark Cuban, and how despite their growth, R. Riveter stayed true to the original mission- helping military families.
Over the years R. Riveter has sold thousands of bags, and Bradley offered a story about a family who is able to keep their father’s memory alive, through a truly unique line of handbags.

After a former Afghan ally attacked West Virginia National Guard troops in Washington DC, killing Spc. Sarah Beckstrom and critically wounding SSgt Andrew Wolfe, we’re hearing a National Guard veteran’s view of these deployments to major US cities, and the vetting process of allies seeking asylum.
National Guard veteran and CEO of The Chamberlain Network, Chris Purdy has served both in Iraq, and with organizations to bring our Afghan allies to the US for their safety.
Purdy offers a deeper look at the intended role of National Guard troops, the issues related to being assigned law enforcement duties, and the actual results of these deployments.

This week Eye on Veterans and Connecting Vets, Reporter Julia LeDoux had an informative conversation with VA Secretary Doug Collins. We asked many of the questions veterans have today.
Collins shared his goals of lowering benefit claims processing times, simplifying the system and a revealed plans to overhaul the application.
We also got a rare look at his military background as an Air Force Reserve Colonel, Chaplain and deployment to Iraq. He shared memories of a Thanksgiving, while stationed at Balad Air Base, and how his experience and faith guide his work today.
We dove into topics like; veteran mental health, what's being done to lower veteran suicides and the connection between mental health and the medications so many veterans are prescribed. We asked his position on alternative treatments like psychedelics and cannabis.
We also sought an explanation for why Congress recently blocked passage of The Maj. Richard Star Act. which defends veterans ability to receive both retirement and disability benefits.

Simply put, Boone Cutler, was one of the most influential veterans of the post 9/11 era.
His recent passing comes too soon but reminds us to remember the alarms he sounded for improving VA care and properly addressing mental health. Cutler called out Congress, DoD and VA for overloading vets with prescription meds while holding an outdated stance on cannabis. And he worked to save countless veterans from the suicide epidemic, through The Spartan Pledge.
In this episode we hear rare conversations recorded in 2019, where we discussed his life, combat in Sadr City, Psy Op (Psychological Operations) tactics and the gripping origin story of his advocacy.
We began at a saloon in Nevada, where Boone shared his family’s rich military tradition. Later we heard Boone’s miraculous, autobiographical story, recorded at his kitchen table, where we truly got to know the man behind those distinctive black sunglasses.
The experiences he shared, would eventually be heard by Congress, and trigger the VA to address the over-prescribing of pills- an issue Cutler dubbed, “The Combat Cocktail”. He powerfully described the pharmaceutical link to the suicide epidemic and illustrated through his own difficult memories, how veterans can consider ending their life.
Cutler’s story also revealed how he was one of the first vets to reveal the second order effects that stem from TBIs and blast injuries. He further shared fierce advocacy for cannabis, and offered vivid examples of how it effectively replaced the pain killers and heavy psychoactive drugs, which are still prescribed too often today.
We finally dove into his love for his wife, family, veteran brothers and sisters, and how The Spartan Pledge, was forged as a battle plan to save veteran lives.
There will never be another vet like Boone Cutler.

We recently learned of the passing of Army veteran Boone Cutler.
Cutler was one of the most influential veteran authors and activists of our time.
As a team leader with a Psychological Operations combat team on the deadly streets of Sadr City, Iraq, Cutler documented his experience and the associated trauma in the bestselling book “Voodoo in Sadr City”.
After a mortar blast resulting in a TBI and other physical injuries sent him to Walter Reed he began the fight of his life.
Based on his personal experience being overprescribed medications (to the point of overdose) Cutler shined a light on the VA’s “Combat Cocktail” scandal in ’07. He lobbied and forced a change in treatment which benefitted a generation of veterans.
As GWOT combat vets revealed a troubling national suicide epidemic, Cutler again advocated for his fellow warfighters and founded the Spartan Pledge. This simple commitment helped prevent countless vets from taking their own life.
We share audio from Cutler’s gripping interviews we recorded over the years, and we salute this inspirational veteran warfighter, Boone Cutler.

Navy veteran Manuel Gomez has an awe-inspiring comeback story!
In this episode he describes his unlikely journey and how he became the founder of Vet Phoenix, a nonprofit which helps incarcerated veterans recover, rehabilitate and create a bright future.
For Manny, this struggle is personal- as he endured time in prison.
From addiction, to crime, to living alongside LA gang members in solitary confinement, he transformed his life. He would eventually become a social worker, doctoral scholar and founder of an organization that transforms lives.
We begin with a look back at his Navy service, and how prescribed medications sent him down a dark path.
Gomez described how his addiction to prescribed meds fueled a darker addiction and eventually spiraled into crime, and being sentenced to prison.
He shared vivid descriptions of prison life, solitary confinement, and how a Catholic radio station and hardened gang members inspired him to pursue a better path. He also recalled the emotional family moment when he dedicated his life to Christ, social work and a mission to mend spiritual wounds.
Gomez describes his incredible rise after being released.
He attended college earning a master’s degree, became an LA County executive and led programs for incarcerated vets, entered a Doctoral program and most recently launched Vet Phoenix.
He shares how this innovative program helps justice-involved veterans get back on track and live a new life of meaning and purpose.
He credits God for his success and is dedicated to sharing the unconditional love that inspired him to transform his life.

We’re discussing veterans, cannabis, incarceration and a story brought to us from The Last Prisoner Project.
Alicia Deals tracks the story of her father, Air Force veteran Robert Deals, who was arrested, convicted and sentenced on cannabis related charges in Arizona, over a decade ago.
In 2020 Arizona residents voted to legalize cannabis. (Now legal for both medical and recreational use). In an ironic twist, Alicia Deals was awarded a state license to operate a dispensary in Tempe, AZ.
Yet her father remains behind bars.
Deals shares more details of her father’s case and describes where cannabis tax dollars are currently being spent.
The Last Prisoner Project’s Executive Director, Sarah Gersten describes other veteran cannabis cases from around the country and highlights their work to reform drug policy on both the state and federal level.
We also discuss Deals’ current plea for clemency and share the response we received from the Arizona Governor’s office.

It’s National Service Dog Month and we’re honoring the dogs from Educated Canines Assisting with Disabilities (ECAD). We talked with two veterans whose stories demonstrate how these dogs truly save lives.
We begin with a look at the military service of Marine Corps Sgt Major John Ploskonka and Army Cavalry veteran and Purple Heart recipient Phil Bauer.
Bauer shared memories of the Chinook helicopter crash which resulted in the loss of his leg and Ploskonka shares how life after the military became a struggle, as he grappled with suppressed childhood trauma.
Both offered a glimpse of what it’s like living with anger, paranoia and constant anxiety.
Until the dogs entered their life. They each described how these dogs respond to their unique needs and the astounding ways they can read their minds. We also hear a fascinating scientific theory about they’re capable of doing it.

This week we’re talking about Ibogaine Psychedelic Therapy with former Army Paratrooper, decorated combat veteran, and Purple Heart recipient Clayton Smith. We discussed his experience with ibogaine treatment which he reluctantly did, just so he could say he "tried everything" before ending his life.
Instead, it completely transformed him and gave him a new mission- healing fellow veterans through the nonprofit “Beond Service” which helps fellow vets gain access to this life-changing, and remarkable treatment.
We begin by unpacking common myths about psychedelics.
We also hear descriptions of his combat deployments and the uncomfortable truth about how trauma is not always related to war, but equally from events like military sexual assault or even childhood. Not all trauma is the same, but all are equal. Smith explained, “… one thing I want to share with the veteran community is that we don’t compare trauma.”
We talked about how despite VA therapy, Smith always felt like he was still broken and shared details of the plan he devised to end his life.
Inspired to try one last treatment, Smith shares vivid memories from his Ibogaine therapy session, and the life-changing lessons he learned from the experience. We also hear stunning results for other vets who attended Beond therapy sessions.
We wrap our discussion with details about the non-profit “Beond Service” which is changing the lives of veterans and their spouses. And we learn how anyone struggling with PTSD, depression or anxiety can find relief through the “Beond Ibogaine” treatment center in Mexico.

This week we’re talking with Army Cavalry Scout veteran, and Medal of Honor recipient SSGT Clint Romesha, who continues to serve his fellow vets though America’s Warrior Partnership.
We begin with a look at his service and a fascinating look into the reconnaissance missions of the elite US Army Cavalry Scouts. Known as the “eyes and ears of the battlefield” he shares a vivid, behind the scenes look at combat operations.
We discussed the day that changed his life forever. It was 2009 in Afghanistan, when Clint defended the remote Combat Outpost Keating when it was almost overrun by 300+ Taliban terrorist forces. He was repeatedly exposed to enemy fire, devised a counterattack, provided cover for fellow soldiers to retrieve the fallen and kill the enemy’s surge. For his actions that day, Romesha was awarded the Medal of Honor in 2013.
Romesha shared the challenges he and many other veterans experienced after war, and how his initial career plans fell apart. He would eventually pursue hard and physical work in the oil fields of North Dakota. Leaning on his military training he also found success, and years after combat, received a mysterious phone from Pentagon.
We wrap our conversation with how he continues to serve his fellow vets through his work with America’s Warrior Partnership. He describes their mission to end veteran suicide by AWP’s ability to deliver mental health care, assist with financial issues, transportation and even help vets live better lives through better employment.
AWP and warriors like Romesha are always there their fellow vets and always have their six.

Today we’re with Navy veteran Matt Thompson who built an incredible post-military career in the skilled trades … and how his use of Tik Tok has made his heating and air conditioning business wildly successful in Southern California.
His story began with a love of auto mechanics, which included building a car that ran on airplane fuel. His knack for fixing engines helped him consistently advance though the ranks.
Thompson shared how his military experience and credentials put him on the fast track to getting a contractor’s license in California, but it was his interest in social media that helped his business experience explosive growth.
He shared how he used YouTube, Facebook and Tik Tok to promote his business through a mix of HVAC related videos and glimpses into his hobbies. He also described how his videos became popular, and how today, he receives sales leads and even gets paid by social platforms for his content and HVAC product demos.
However Thompson is not pushing people to become an “influencer”. Rather, he calls for more veterans (and our kids) to consider careers in the skilled trades and use social to help build a thriving business.

This week we’re talking about the new book, “Forged in Chaos: A Warrior’s Origin Story” by Army Special Operations veteran Tyler Grey.
Tyler was the epitome of the modern warrior, a Delta Force operator, master of counterterrorism. He hunted the worst bullies on the world’s playground—high-value targets, bomb makers, warlords—executing covert missions that never made the news- until one mission in Sadr City, Iraq changed everything.” On what should’ve been a routine raid, an explosion ripped through the home shattering his arm and worse; it fractured his identity.
Grey describes “chaos addiction” and how most combat veterans share a similar past, which support his groundbreaking LTSD theory, “Lack of Traumatic Stress Disorder”. We hear how this theory explains why Grey managed his mental health crisis with drugs, sex and toxic relationships. We also examine two traits common among combat vets, which he calls “The Warrior and Destroyer”.
Grey also revealed serious flaws behind modern medicine’s current PTSD diagnosis, and how anyone who has experienced trauma can learn from his fight to conquer the battle within.
This book doesn’t challenge the narrative; it destroys it, laying bare the cost of being forged in chaos.

This week we hear from Dr. Will Van Derveer about about the proven benefits of Psychedelic Assisted Therapy. Dr. Van Derveer shared how after working with veterans he became discouraged by the conventional treatments like talk therapy and endless medications which often fail to treat the root cause of conditions like anxiety, bi-polar, depression and PTSD.
After two decades of developing innovative approaches to address the root causes of symptoms, in 2018 he co-founded the Integrative Psychiatry Institute. A leader on a mission to transform mental healthcare, VanDerveer set a goal to train 10,000 providers in psychedelic-assisted therapy.
We started with a discussion about the failures of standard mental health treatment protocols.
Dr. Van Derveer shared data on the effectiveness of psychedelics, and updates on current VA, FDA trials, including MDMA, and Psilocybin. And how many vets are forced to “free-lance their own care” by going to Mexico to gain access to Ibogaine therapy.
Dr Van Derveer also shared the vicious mental cycle a PTSD patient endures, what a psychedelic treatment session is like, and how psychedelics are proving effective at helping veterans heal.

Air Force veteran Bruce Anderson, his wife Lesley and SW:S Music Director Jay Clementi share how these weekend retreats pair award-winning songwriters with veterans to create songs that help them tell their story and bring them closure. We start with a look at Anderson’s deployments during the Global War on Terror. Anderson and his wife Lesley brilliantly recall the troubles he experienced after returning from war, and how they took a chance on attending a SW:S weekend retreat.
The Andersons describe the origin of their song, “The Man You Used to Know,” and how writing it with hit songwriter Trent Willmon, was more powerful than any medicine.
Jay Clementi describes the “Songwriting with Soldiers” writing process and a new music initiative where select songs from these powerful retreats are fully produced by award-winning Nashville producers and now available on all major streaming platforms.

This week we talk with Marine Corps veteran and acclaimed journalist Chas Henry about his dramatic new book, “Fuji Fire, Sifting Ashes of a Forgotten U.S. Marine Corps Tragedy”.
It's the story of how in 1979 the largest typhoon ever recorded hit Camp Fuji, Japan, ruptured a fuel tank, sending 5000 gallons of fuel into huts where Marines were staying, eventually engulfing the camp in walls of fire after the fuel was ignited by kerosene heaters.
Henry recalls the origin of the project was when he posted photos from his deployment there (before the fire), and how it inspired a multi-year investigation to finally tell their story.
In our detailed interview Henry shares first-hand accounts he gathered from veterans who lived through the tragedy. He also shares how Japanese forces assisted Marine forces despite strained relations with the US Government.
We also hear gripping stories about the crews who helped save Marines, a brave military doctor, advancements in emergency medicine and burn care and a Marine who inspired his fellow survivors. Plus how the work of legendary Hollywood actor Dick Van Dyke helped some Marines survive.

We recently heard about the “Unite 4 Veterans” rally, June 6th in Washington DC, where vets from around the country will make their voices heard in the loudest way possible … with the legendary Irish punk band The Dropkick Murphys.
We spoke with Unite4Vets coalition members Army veterans Will Attig and Chris Purdy.
Together they sounded the alarm about recent VA cuts without regard to the second order effects on veterans who rely on these programs.
In a recent statement, Unite 4 Veterans said, “The Unite 4 Veterans Coalition stands in firm opposition to recent actions and proposals from the White House that amount to political theater at the direct expense of our nation’s veterans … The administration’s proposal to eliminate more than 80,000 positions from the VA and terminate thousands of jobs held by veterans and their families in the federal workforce is a betrayal.
Veterans make up more than a third of the federal workforce. Cutting their positions while simultaneously gutting the VA staff that manages transition programs like the G.I. Bill and VA vocational rehabilitation is not about efficiency, it’s neglect!
This administration’s priorities could not be clearer: spend over $50 million on a military parade while slashing programs like the Veterans Affairs Servicing Purchase (VASP) program—a proven resource that kept over 17,000 vulnerable veteran families housed.
This is not sound policy; it is political optics at the expense of those who’ve sacrificed the most.”
We also discuss the combat connection veterans have to Boston’s legendary punk band The Dropkick Murphys, and how they've always been huge supporters of first responders, veterans and America’s often ignored working class.

We begin with his memories of a life changing deployment to Afghanistan.
He spoke about the good times … and the bad. We hear about life on a remote combat outpost, how he survived being shot 10 times, and the ultimate sacrifice made by his best friend, Adam Hamilton.
Hasting shares how he initially found therapy in archery before COVID struck. Then facing isolation, he picked up a guitar. Hasting discusses his meteoric rise in the music business, and the song he wrote for his fallen best friend. And we hear the emotional military song he recorded with Lee Brice and the legendary Dolly Parton.

This week we’re talking with Navy veteran John Barile about how he went from Navy Sea Air Rescue Swimmer to becoming a highly successful business owner. This week we’re talking about The Old Glory Ultra Relay. Army veteran Jason Wood shares how he and a team of 12 vets from Team Red White and Blue will begin running, non-stop from San Diego, CA to Washington DC. We talked about how this feat is even possible, and the route they will travel.
Wood also shared how his own battle with PTSD, and depression almost ended his life. Saved after initially discovering joy from challenges like The Spartan Race, he ultimately began competing (and winning!) several ultra distance competitions.
Wood also talked about Team Red, White and Blue, a veteran group that helps fellow vets overcome life’s challenges through building an athletic community. Donations from the Old Glory Ultra will help Team RWB build even more events and make a significant change in the current mental health and suicide crisis among veterans.

Every year vets shred the slopes of Snowmass, Colorado at The National Disabled Veterans Winter Sports Clinic.
We’re joined by Army veteran, Frances Osorio-Rivera, who as a single leg amputee went from being severely injured to becoming an inspiring pro kite surfer. Rivera, a Puerto Rico native and self-described “island girl” shared how despite her injury, she was determined to back in the water and resume kite surfing. She also described how attending the Winter Sports Clinic changed her life.
We also talked with Alex Maytre, VA Recreational Therapist and adaptive sports expert. He highlighted his previous work helping vets discover the thrills of scuba diving in Miami and describes how VA works to help vets achieve their wildest dreams.
From the ski slopes to kite surfing to scuba diving, their stories reveal how outdoor adaptive sports truly help vets heal and experience the power of feeling stoked!

This week we’re catching up with The American Legion's Executive Director of Government Affairs, Mario Marquez, a retired Marine Corps Sgt. Major, with a deep background in veterans affairs and national security.

In this era of VA budget cuts and workforce layoffs, we talked about it with Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Communications Chief, Air Force veteran Dan Clare.
After a recent meeting with VA Secretary Doug Collins, who recently spoke at DAV’s Mid-Winter Conference, Clare shared how Collins claimed his #1 priority was taking care of our vets, but did not offer any details about how exactly he’s going to do it.
Clare explains that massive cuts to VA staff, seems ill-advised considering over 800K new veterans have recently registered for VA care and over 1M claims have been filed, since the PACT Act, toxic exposure bill, became law three years ago.
We also dove into the benefit claims process, and how DAV is there to help all veterans get their applications processed and ensure they stand a chance at getting approved. Clare also discussed alternative health care treatment options DAV members want to see in the future.
And although DAV members hope the new administration will deliver results, they have yet to hear anything specific from VA or when they will deliver promising new treatments.

Luke Graziani, is a U.S. Army Veteran with 4 deployments to Iraq and AFG. After checking his email on February 13, he cringed after reading he was being fired from his public affairs officer role at The Bronx VA Hospital.
He shares how despite having stellar performance reviews from his supervisor, the letter from DOGE cited “job performance” as one of the reasons for his termination.
Graziani also describes how this move will force other VA staff (who don’t even work at the hospital) to pick up the slack, and how there is still no official word on whether his supervisors appeal for an exemption will be heard, or if he'll ever be allowed return to work.

Tim Jensen, a Marine Corps combat veteran, is on a mission to stop veteran suicide.
The powerful veteran activist and head of Grunt Style Foundation (advocacy arm of America’s patriotic T-Shirt brand Grunt Style) talked with us about the current state of suicide prevention.
Jensen shared a surprising connection between suicide and psychotropic drugs, and others for anxiety, depression and even meds used to help vets quit smoking.
He also illustrated how alternative medical treatments, widely known to improve the lives of vets with head injuries and PTSD, are being underutilized or even ignored.
We discussed the political games unfolding as DOGE cuts continue to slice the federal workforce.
And we examine the path forward; including upcoming meetings with House Veterans Affairs committee members, a GSF-VFW partnership, and a proposal currently being reviewed by officials in the Trump administration.

After the recent Executive Order for Federal employees to return to the office, Jenna Carlton, DoD employee and founder of The Millennial Veterans Facebook group is facing a tough choice- stay in her current job, or quit.
She described how her DoD job was fully remote from first the day she was hired. She shared how they live over an hour away from base, but found a way to effectively make her family schedule work with minimal in-office requirements.
After the recent order, she is grappling with the reality that her job may now cost too much to keep.
Beyond the impact on her family, Carlton also shares how this decision is impacting vets nationwide and could even disrupt Naval fleet readiness in the months to come.

Let’s talk about love! Andrew Carroll, Director of The Center for American Letters, returns with some of the most romantic words ever written, by service members fighting wars around the world.
This collection of over 200K letters spans the Revolutionary War to World Wars all the way up to modern emails from our current generation.
We begin with the beautiful words for a loving wife, composed on a battlefield in Virginia, during the American Civil War. Carroll continues with an intriguing love letter that was really part of a secret intelligence mission during WWII. And we hear the bitter side of love, in a response to a “Dear John” letter from a Korean War soldier.
Carroll also shows how some love letters can even bring total strangers together, as we hear about a love story that began with pen pals. And we take a whimsical look at the medical conditions associated with true love, from a pioneering African American doctor during the World War II era.

Today we’re hearing from attorney Bart Stichman, Co-founder of National Veterans Legal Services Program, regarding the case “Soto vs United States” and how a Marine Corps combat veteran (and 9,000 other vets) had their benefit claims denied, and disputed by our government.
The petition was filed on behalf of USMC vet, Mr. Simon Soto who was initially approved for Combat Related Special Compensation (CRSC), but later denied the full amount after government lawyers claimed a six-year ceiling on retroactive benefits.
We open with the facts behind this case, and examine the PTSD he suffered after serving as Mortuary Affairs in Iraq, where he processed the remains of our fallen Marines and Soldiers.
Stichman further explains:

- The arguments that will be heard by The United States Supreme Court in April

This episode is the first of a 2-part series where we hear a powerful interview with Army combat vet, Purple Heart recipient turned software developer Lukas Simianer- who fights the VA for vets, and wins.
Wounded in Afghanistan at the age of 19, Lukas left the military with only a few hundred bucks in his pocket and started the difficult transition from enlisted soldier to civilian life.

Thinking you might need to stop drinking? This episode is for you.
As we kick off the New Year, many folks attempt to give up alcohol in what’s commonly called “Dry January”.
But for many veterans, drinking becomes more than just a social vice … it can have dangerous, criminal and even deadly consequences.
We talked with former Navy Destroyer Commanding Officer, Jay Wylie, who shared his battle with booze, and how drinking went from a coping mechanism, to collapsing his military career.
Tracing the origins of his drinking to college, Wylie described a military culture that appeared to embrace it. He shared a remorseful look at his drinking problem, “I ended up getting so drunk and stupid on liberty with a couple of female crew members, that I broke every rule in the Captain’s book.”
His booze-fueled behavior eventually led to conviction on sexual assault charges, which resulted in; being relieved of command of USS Momsen (DDG-92), court martialed, and sentenced to 42 months.
In hindsight Wylie revealed, “as painful as that was… that’s what it took to get me sober.”
He also shared the steps he personally took to end the destructive pattern caused by his out of control drinking.
Now with 13 years of sobriety, he’s dedicated to helping other veterans quit drugs and alcohol.
Wylie also shared how his work with Confidential Recovery, in San Diego, helps guide clients through the 12-Step process, and works with VA recovery services to help vets get the treatment they need, before suffering severe alcohol related consequences.
He also offers insight on whether cannabis is helpful, or just another vice.
As veterans (and even non-veterans) look to goals of self-improvement in the new year, Wylie’s story reveals there is hope and resources for veterans searching for a way to break the cycle and begin a better life.

We’re keeping the Christmas spirit alive, by sharing incredible letters written by service members deployed long ago.
The letters come to us from Andrew Carroll, Founder of The Center for American War Letters, who has archived and preserved over 200K letters- some dating back to the Revolutionary War.
We discussed several pieces from the collection, including; a letter from an Army nurse, expressing her condolences to the family of a soldier she cared for at the end of the war, and who didn’t pass from combat injuries, but rather from influenza. Like the era we experienced during the global pandemic in 2020, the letter shows an empathy and compassion we wish we could see more often today.
Carroll also shares letters from the Pacific during WWII, a snow covered Germany during WWII, and a Christmas themed letter that offers an inspiring look at post WWII Europe.
Together, these letters portray how previous generations beautifully captured the human spirit in a writing style that sounds like classic Hemmingway.

It’s a week after the thrilling 125th Army-Navy Game, but even after the game, we still love hearing stories from our fellow Soldiers and Sailors.
During our time on USAA’s Media Row, we had fascinating conversations with military vets and senior military leaders.
We start with Maj. General Brett Sylvia, Commanding General of the Army’s mighty 101st Airborne (Air Assault). He shared some history from this legendary unit and offered a glimpse at the lethal capability they're bringing into the future.
We also had a good time talking with Army Special Forces veteran, football player and filmmaker Nate Boyer. He discussed his "late bloomer" path to the Army and football, and how his organization “Merging Vets and Players” brings vets together with former NFL athletes.

This is the story of Army veteran and former Apache helicopter pilot Kevin Byrne, and his unstoppable mission to fight Multiple Sclerosis (MS).
Initially diagnosed while leading a squadron in Korea, he has since become a staunch supporter of his fellow MS patients and the National MS Society, through his non-profit organization “Never Stop Never Quit”.

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune disease that damages the central nervous system, which includes the brain and spinal cord:
Symptoms
MS can cause a wide range of symptoms, including vision loss, pain, fatigue, impaired coordination, numbness, tingling, weakness, and difficulty with mobility. Symptoms can vary from person to person and can change over time.
Causes
MS occurs when the immune system mistakenly attacks healthy cells in the central nervous system. This damage to the protective coating of nerve cells, called demyelination, can lead to paralysis.
Treatment
There is no cure for MS, but medications and physical therapy can help manage symptoms and slow disease progression. Early treatment can lead to better outcomes.
Prognosis
Most people with MS have a normal life expectancy, however end up dealing with degrading physical abilities and chronic symptoms over time .

We talk with Army combat veteran, and former Special Forces Public Affairs specialist, Aaron Knowles about “Shred the Stress” an organization he founded to bring the therapeutic benefits of the “Onewheel” electric skateboard, to veterans everywhere.
We begin by tracking his days in Iraq and the events that nearly cost him his life.
After surviving IED explosions and multiple life-changing moments, Knowles shared his transition from heavy vehicle operator to managing public affairs for units within the Special Operations community. But the joy of sharing our warfighter’s stories, was complicated by his own war wounds.
Knowles reveals the after-effects of traumatic brain injuries and describes living with PTSD. After trying to manage his mental health with the usual recommendations, he discovered an alternative tool that delivered powerful results- the Onewheel, electric skateboard.
Knowles described how surfing the earth on this unique board made him stoked in ways medication could not. Realizing his immediate improvement, he founded a riding group for all veterans, “Shred the Stress”.
Now based in Brooklyn, NY. we learn more about the group, its future, and how veterans across the country can get involved.

Former Navy SEAL Marcus Capone and his wife Amber share their emotional story about how a medically assisted Ibogaine treatment session saved their family, and this combat veteran’s life.
We begin by looking at how life as a Navy SEAL “breacher” and explosives expert, left Marcus with what seemed like untreatable PTSD and brain injuries. We learn how Marcus, once full of life and drive, was quickly slipping into the depression and anger often associated with these injuries. While war fighters receive the initial impact of combat related injuries, they are not the only ones who suffer.
Amber Capone describes how life after Marcus’ SEAL days, became extremely difficult for her and their children, threatening their marriage and overall family mental health. Facing their breaking point, Marcus and Amber took one last chance on psychedelic therapy.
Marcus shares vivid details from his medically assisted Ibogaine session. We hear how the experience differs from the stereo-typical “psychedelic trip” and how he confronted the dark images buried deep beneath the surface.
Our interview tracks life after the Ibogaine session too. From their heartfelt reunion to the many ways, they recognize the true healing that came from this complex and mysterious psychedelic compound.
We also look at the non-profit foundation they founded, Vets Exploring Treatment Solutions (VETS) which has helped over one thousand veterans gain access to psychedelic therapy, develops world class research and works to move VA, DoD and Congress to implement this therapy for veterans.
And, we conclude with a most surprising discovery- the incredible connection between psychedelic therapy and God.

Navy Hospital Corpsman are revered among the infantry as the medics who rush into combat to treat the wounded. However not all Navy Corpsman pursue a career in healthcare or the medical field after their military service.

Many Americans just assume vets always vote for the candidate who talks toughest about national defense, or offers strong positions on policies related to terrorism. While in some cases that may be true, the biggest question this year is still quite simple- Do vets favor Trump or Harris?
A recent survey of Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) members, offers an interesting glimpse at where this group stands, just days before the election.
IAVA, CEO, and Army veteran Allison Jaslow reveals the survey results and shares how the survey breaks across categories like gender.
The survey also tells a unique story about IAVA members, who are younger than other veteran groups, and after their service in Iraq/Afghanistan have often done the heaviest lifting during the Global War on Terrorism.

We talked about it's benefits for veterans with co-founder and acclaimed scientist Henry O’Connell. He described how together with Jeff Adams, a leader in speech and language technology, they combined expertise in neurology and speech technology (Henry at the National Institutes of Health, and Jeff leading Amazon Alexa’s speech AI team) to explore how this type of speech technology could be used in medicine.
We took a deep dive into how Canary Speech works- analyzing the vocal tones far beneath the actual words we speak. And we learned how this app can serve as a useful tool to track our mental health.

In the days (and weeks) since Hurricane Helene ravaged western North Carolina, veterans serving with Team Rubicon moved into action.
We spoke with Army paratrooper veteran, Drew Hanna, who described what he witnessed and his team’s mission to restore the Veteran’s Restoration Quarters, a transitional housing facility that assists veterans in need.
Hanna also offered a behind the scenes look at how volunteers live while deployed to disaster areas and he spoke about other relief organizations that help make their work possible.
While the road to recovery may take the entire next year, the veterans with Team Rubicon will not stop until the job is done.

This week we’re highlighting veteran-led disaster relief groups currently working to help those devastated by two recent hurricanes.
In the hours prior to Hurricane Milton crushing Florida’s Gulf Coast, we spoke with Special Operations veteran and former Intelligence Officer Bryan Stern, Founder of Grey Bull Rescue Foundation.
Over the past 2 weeks, he and his team at Grey Bull have helped rescue disaster victims from Florida to NC.
Beyond the recent hurricanes, he and his military veteran team have conducted dangerous ops to save Americans stuck in war zones like, Lebanon, Haiti and Russia.
We heard vivid details about some of these missions, and how his team is uniquely qualified to execute them in ways the US government is not.
We also hear his eye-opening take on the recent divisive, disaster relief stories, which claim the government is actively disrupting rescue efforts for political gain. (Spoiler alert: He's not a fan of conspiracy theorists or whiners!)

Today we’re talking with Army veteran, entrepreneur Trace Miller, about his revolutionary fast food franchise "Konala Protein Bowls and Salads". We’ll hear how it combines incredibly healthy food with the traditional drive thru, which is a staple of the American diet … yet slowly poisons us.
Trace’s inspiration for using whole foods as a cure for disease was not born in the gym. Food was an essential part of how he defeated Lennox-Gastaut epilepsy as a child.
His toddler days were filled with seizures, even having to wear a helmet for protection against his bodies violent reaction to a parasite. American doctors offered no hope.
Desperate for a cure, his family traveled outside the US for a rare treatment. However it came with a lifelong commitment to a pure and healthy diet. Trace describes the journey through his teenage years, which eventually led him to operating missile systems in the Army.
Ironically, his time in the Army would inspire him to pursue personal passions like; scuba diving, stock investing and eventually business ownership.
Miller describes how he (and his wife Jammie) initially founded a food truck and bar. But they had even bigger dreams.
So building on their life experiences, they designed an alternative to unhealthy fast food franchises …, and Konala Protein Bowls and Salads was born.

Veterans are creating a groundswell of support for federal marijuana legislation. On today’s show we remember and honor the combat veteran, hip hop artist Doc Todd, whose life was cut short after a heart attack last month. George Michael Todd went by “Mik” but he was known to the rap world as “Doc Todd”. (Doc, a nickname for all Navy Corpsman, who are the first to respond to Marines and soldiers injured on the battlefield.)
He was a big bear of a guy, who instantly made you feel good. Our friendship lasted several years, and over the course of several interviews he shared the combat and post military experiences that shaped his acclaimed album “Combat Medicine”.
Doc was the kind of guy I knew I could ask anything and get a real answer. In one of our interviews, we talked about how his service-related injuries sent him down the dark road to addiction … something he shared openly on his first hit single, “Not Alone”.
IN one interview from 2019 he talked more about his single, “Not Alone” and how it drew interest from Diet Coke who made him a central part of their promotional campaign focused on mental health.
Doc Todd’s 2019 album Strange Pictures took another angle at improving our collective mental health though art, photography and music.
But rather than focusing on just those struggling, his follow up hit single “Feels Good” was a summer anthem, that reminded vets and non-vets alike, to seek joy in our daily lives.
Doc Todd shared his talents and his struggles.
He made people smile, groove and his gifted soul touched millions.

Kristopher Goldsmith is an Army combat veteran, acclaimed writer and investigator who has fought for veterans’ rights for years. On Wednesday August 10, President Biden signed “The PACT Act” into law. The signature took only minutes but the effort to secure health care and monetary benefits for vets dying from toxic exposures was a fight that took decades.
A few hours after the White House ceremony, we sat down with one of the fiercest veteran fighters, Marine Corps combat vet, and leader of Grunt Style T-Shirts and apparel Tim Jensen. We discussed how Jensen and others like Rosie Torres and Jon Stewart confronted Senators who had the gall to vote against this monumental bill. And we heard what it was like behind the scenes during their exhaustive 5-day protest, where they camped out on the steps of Capitol Hill.
Jensen also revealed if this law will do enough, why this journey was one of the most significant moments in his life, and how this law will touch the lives of American military veterans from the Vietnam era to future generations.

Why did Republican Senators vote against The PACT Act?! Which would give care and benefits to vets dying from exposure to toxic burn pits in war zones? We checked in with Tim Jensen, combat vet and Grunt Style apparel 1st Sgt, who was spending the night on the Capitol steps in DC for a "Fire Watch" protest. He and millions of other vets are literally ready to fight for this bill, but it seems all the US Senate wants to do is play politics.
Republicans claim Democrats put a "budget gimmick" in the bill so they can spend more money on pork projects. Democrats claim Republicans won't pay for vets dying from diseases they developed after fighting wars they voted for.
Jensen said, "What we have here is partisan politics, where the veteran is left holding the bag .. only this time the bag is tied to death."
We examined who really f*cked over veterans, and Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA). Is he a coward or a puppet ... or both?

And how pathetic voting against this was, especially for Sen. Tom Cotton (R-AR) who is an Army veteran.

Milburn, a former Marine Corps Special Operations (MARSOC) Regiment commander and is now in Kyiv assisting Ukrainian forces. His non-profit The Mozart Group is seeking donations to keep his team of Spec Ops veterans on the ground and assisting the Ukrainian military to defeat Russian forces. with his. He shared how US weapons are not getting through, training is incomplete, and troops are in dire need of medical equipment and assistance right now.
