It was truly awesome to get outside and on the Lake today at Umstead Park in Raleigh, NC. I made it a quick trip with the goal of catching a nice sized Bass. Mission was accomplished.
I will say this episode is an example of how important is is to be prepared when things go unexpectedly wrong. Unless I am fishing for food (only a few times in my life), I always catch and release (A River Monster Jeremy Wade lesson).
However, sometimes when fishing the hook gets swallowed a bit by the fish into the deeper regions of their mouth.
Thats what happened in today's episode, but thankfully I was prepared to save the fish. I used my 12 inch long hook remover (looks like forceps from a doctor's office). Using the hook remover, I was able to safely take the barbed hook out of the Bass's deep mouth area and put Her/Him/It back into the Lake where they belong.
The Bass was about 17 inches long and 3.5 lbs, and I hope he grows to 28 inches 15 lbs when I catch him in 10 years from now.
Bass can live up to 25+ years. They are very cool fish. Why I will save a Bass every time I catch one?
I owe it to owning a 10 gallon aquarium when I was in my youth, as well as growing up in Virginia Beach. My Dads (I had two as my Mom remarried) both taught me this at a young age - never kill a fish unless we need it for food.
Made it a quick win today on Mother's day and finally caught that first Bass of the year while recording. Last week Dwayne and I received an assist by a large raptor who dropped the bass. I didn't get a chance to take a picture as I had to take my time removing the hook so as not to hurt his gills or stomach. Felt great to catch a bass on Happy Mother Nature day.
Buddies John and Dwayne get together for the first time in about 1. 5 years.
We are here for fishing and talking and decompressing, but of course we are going to talk some tech.
We do catch a beautiful Bass together with 100% teamwork (including ourselves and either an Eagle, Hawk, Osprey, or Blue Heron).
We sing a little Charlies Daniel's Band "Devil Went Down to Georgia" just as two southern folks remembering a legendary fittle player and song.
Only unfortunate part of the trip was that we ran out of recording battery at the end, so our episode sputters out a little on a sad topic about a recent John Oliver episode -- time shares and the companies that helped people get rid of the time shares.
Most important about this May 6th Saturday was that we made time for each other, and we got out of the house and onto a lake in North Carolina to fish and talk together. Thank you Dwayne for an excellent experience last Saturday May 6, 2023. Hope to do it again real soon buddy!
Cast and realed 35 or so times and kept all audio for a 40 minute long episode. May keep it real or potentially edit tomorrow. Test run the new Johnny Morris Bass Pro Carbonite 2.0 after getting a great lesson from the Real Bass Pro who taught me about gear ratio. Went with 7.5 upon his recommendations. After taking my baseball bats onto the Big Lake at Umstead, and slowly after becoming self aware and returning them in exchange for my actual fishing rod and real, I go back out to UmStead to cast and real, cast and real. Eventually I couldn't even do that anymore (my line snapped), and will be sending the Ranger at Umstead a penalty for leaving a lure in the water unattended.
Sometimes you just need a few more days to unwind. I tried and then realized my dang bat bag was on my shoulder. Saw a snake too, but didn't quite get audio or picture. I just went back to my car, and still grabbed the Johnny Morris Lews Combos and got back at it. This is uncut so will be restricted until edited. PG 13 is no longer an accepted assumption so Forgive the slight slip up.
First trip out Fishing n the new year. Cracked 50 degrees so had to get on the beavertail stealth sneakboat 2000 and try to catch a lunker. Had a tight Window and just made it out before the gates closed.
After a long night of Thanksgiving, it's 7:08 am on Black out Friday and it's time to play "Let's catch a free Bass!"
After working a long night deployment the night before and dealing with Hurricane Ian blowing through, I decide to go fishing and talking on October 1, 2022. Its been nearly 8 months since my last podcast, so dusted off the boat and got back at it.
It was 70 degrees on Thursday February 3rd, 2022. Didn't have much luck catching bass, but I made it fun at the end as I jumped into the water for a cold bath (Water temperature was under 40 degrees - according to lakemonster.com)
Lydia wrote a script and I tried to follow it. Told some silly jokes..got some nibbles, but didn't hook anything at Pond Jackson on a Cold and Wet December 18th, 2021.
Caught a Gigantic Bass today and recorded it live. When measuring on my Field and Stream 18 inch oar- it was well over 7 inches longer than my oar. The BASS was too big for me to manage taking a picture but My goodness It is was the sound of pure Joy. Reflected on my conversation with Greg before launching the boat. He remined me to stop chasing the money - and focus on the joys of life. Though reminded myself I still need a nest egg - and to mind my cash flow - so I can be Greg someday.
Most importantly, I caught a 17 inch bass around minute 10 - was actually 20 minutes and 12 seconds into my broadcast, but cut out the white noise - most of it at least - besides my own white head noise (for you Marques P). Talk about a recent tragedy that is close to home - Frank W. Cox (my High School) and Virginia Tech (My University). Put it in the universe's hands and maybe hope Malcom Gladwell's as he knows what Talking to Strangers is about as he wrote the book. I just hope it gets better. The Anger, the internal struggle of our melting pot Nation is killing me softly and some people literally.
Its been since February 28, 2021 since I've made my way out on a lake with my BeaverTail Stealth Sneakboat 2000. There is a lot that has happened in our lives since then - surviving Brain Fog (BogMonster) from Covid, and I am finally able to work again - almost full speed. Its also the day -77 years ago - that we helped France in Normandy - just like they helped us in 1781.
After recovering from 2 knee operations in the last year; I am finally able to put my boat back on my Yakama Rack and drive it to Beaver Dam Lake in New Light, North Carolina (Just North of Raleigh).
Decided to go Fishing And Talking on Super Bowl Sunday. I was still 44 while Tom Brady was 43. Turned 45 the day after this broadcast. Tom...you are lucky I chose baseball.
Fishing in 41 degrees at Pond Jackson in Wake County, North Carolina. Had one that's mouth was too small to catch my hook. Staying Positive and like the best Soldiers we have - trying to be a Purple heart (Not Red or Blue but Red, Blue and everything else equals Purple).
Its been months since a podcast, so made myself take a quick trip to Umstead and took 4 casts.

One of my loyal subscribers had an excellent set of questions for me to address after my recent 6 minute episode of FishingAndTalking. I decided to sit down in my office chair and answer them as best I can from the heart.
Spent some recent time with my family, and try to catch a bass while recapping some key lessons learned from Uncle Training by Mom, Sisters, Brothers, In-laws, and especially those Nephews and Niece. We can never stop getting better.
Finally ended the drought and picked up a quick win at Big Lake at Umstead Park in Raleigh, North Cackalacky. Mother Nature - oh boy, did it feel good! Caught it with a Red Lobster Bass Pro special by Berkeley Power Baits! I think it was more Hokie blood Orange:) - Hendon and Quincy lets go fishing!

Fishing again at Pond Jackson on April 25th 2020 - though I got the date wrong in the audio. Share some insight from a W&M undergrad who attended UVA for post graduate work - Thomas Jefferson would have definitely pulled for the Tribe vs. UVA.
Big Catfish brings up the topic of homeostasis in a pond and makes me think and talk about the need to have it in my mind and body as well.
After worrying about the baby fish and telling myself to go home; instead I fished on at the edge of the Pond - oh my.
Trip to Fuquay Varina - being extremely safe and avoiding people while at the same time getting outside and breathing and fishing.
March 25th prior to the Triangle order to shelter in, but may keep doing this as long as I can stay a safe distance. Damn Corona Virus sucks!

Went Fishing last Sunday at 1pm, and talked mad cash about Astros after winning Game 4. Man did that hurt when we lost game 7.
Its all about being with Nature!

John Sellers and George Vu return to Beaver Dam Lake for the first time in over 4 years. The storm is coming and despite warnings from several fisherman John and George start the trip, but soon realize mother nature is not to be tested - especially considering we can do Episode 13 tomorrow on a Sunny Beautiful Day!
John and TBS 3 get busy on Pond Jackson. We thought we caught a few. Thomas is 13, and I think I may have dropped an Fbomb, so please don't judge me for cursing.
He reminded me he is 13 and allowed to watch PG-13 movies.
It was a wonderful Sellers', Shepheard, Jackson weekend in Fuquay-Varina at Pond Jackson. Lydia caught her first fish immediately after taking a spin on the BeaverTailStealthSneakBoat2000 for Episode 10.

On that great day after Thanksgiving in 2017, Bryan and I (Tisa was working at the mall) placed my Beaver Tail Stealth Sneakboat 2000 on top of my city slicker Toyota Matrix's Yakama Rack. Then we loaded the Matrix hatchback with my 55lb thrust Minkota electric motor, Bass Pro Power Series 1000 Battery, Fishing Tackle, Johnny Morris Titanium 8 Baitcaster and Rod, WhiteRiver Fly Rod and Reel, my Magical Disney Indiana Jones Hat (made in Kenya but bought at Disney World's Indian Jones Ride in Orlando), Daiwa Samurai Spinning Combo Reel, and drove our crazy knuckle heads to Raleigh's Umstead lake - A.K.A Big Lake. What a great day after Thanksgiving in 2017 it became.

Bryan still joins me from time to time, but he is out in Sandford, NC, so I don't always get him as a guest and often find myself fishing and talking alone on a lake somewhere in the Triangle.
I was raised to be quiet when goiong fishing. Some research shows that verbal sounds above the water don't actually impact your ability to catch fish. Perhaps my Grandmother just wanted me to shut my trap so she could enjoy nature as it was meant to be - Thank you Grandma Vera Weigelt for teaching me the greatest stress reliever in life - Go Fishing!
