Sometimes, we all need a Silver Lining. And, sometimes that Silver Lining is a person. These conversations are with individuals from all over the world who share their stories, experiences, and silver lining moments. By you listening and by my guests sharing, together, we are expanding love and light (with a touch of laughter), one person at a time, one story at a time, one Silver Lining Moment at a time.
Expanding Love and Light
One Silver Lining Moment at a Time
A SLM conversation with Renee King-Sonnen
(Her vegan transformation from cattle rancher to cattle sanctuary)
Renee King-Sonnen is on a mission to restore harmony and balance between us, animals, and our planet. This mission started with Rowdy Girl, an abandoned calf on her husband’s Texan cattle ranch. Her husband asked her to help nurture and mother Rowdy Girl. And, this changed everything; it was the start of a new way of seeing animals, a new diet, and a new life mission.
Renee went on to become a vegan, to co-found Rowdy Girl Sanctuary, and work with the Rancher Advocacy Program.
Rowdy Girl Sanctuary (RGS) provides sanctuary to farm animals at risk of being slaughtered and promotes an ethical vegan lifestyle. RGS seeks to educate the public on plant based food options, FFA/4H, factory farming practices, and the devastating impact of animal agriculture on the environment. Learn more about RGS at @45:00 mark of this epsiode and at its website: https://rowdygirlsanctuary.org/
The Ranchere Advocacy Program (RAP) "...advocaes for the farmer, families, their land, and the planet." They help farmers and ranchers transition out of animal agriculture to othr ways of using their land in ways that sustains themselves, their families, their land, and the environment. Learn more about RAP at @50:00 mark of this episode and at its website: https://rancheradvocacy.org/
In this episode, Renee shares her vegan journey and advocacy with us. We discuss:
When I recorded the introduction for this episode, I named it "a moment of NURTURE is lined by TRANSFORMATION". As I started to type that title here, a sanctuary popped in instead of transformation. From her nurturing of Rowdy Girl, Renee went on to create a sanctuary for other animals. In the process, she is also creating a sanctuary for herself, for others, and for our shared planet.

a moment of NURTURE is lined by SANCTUARY.

A SLM conversation with Jennifer Brown
(finding joy again)
If you experienced times where you just didn’t feel joy in your life? You’re not alone.
In the past few years, our guest Jennifer Brown has experienced cancer, losing her job, and, like all of us, the pandemic. Somewhere along the way, she lost joy. She couldn’t feel it. And, she did not know how to have fun anymore.
She found herself searching for answers to questions like –
What am I doing with my life?
Being middle aged, gave a little sense of urgency in her thinking -
I need to figure this out now!
So, when she lost her job, she saw it as an opportunity – as time to do something that she has been dreaming about for a long time – taking a RV road trip.
In this SLM conversation with Jennifer, we discuss:
and, more!
Join us and share in her journey and discover how a
moment of SEARCHING FOR ANSWERS is lined by TRUSTING IN SELF

A moment of PSORIASIS & FRUSTRATION is lined by PROCESS & FRIENDSHIP.
Silver Lining Moments are every where, in each moment, even in a moment of psoriasis (chronic condition) & frustration! In this SLM short, I talk about how a psoriasis flare-up has me feeling frustrated and angry filled with resentment and fear!
These feelings may start with the psoriasis, but once I feel them, they spread to other areas of my life. Once the frustration feelings take hold, they create a filter through which I see everything that casts a shadow over all aspects of my life.
The more I focus on my frustration, the more frustrated I feel about more things.
This, albiet in inverse, is the core of Silver Lining Moments.
The more we focus on something, the more it expands, grows, intensifies. Silver Lining Moments ia about focusing on the good so that the good expands. So, let’s focus on the good.
Let's be real. It’s hard to focus on the good, when I am feeling frustrated and stuck. Silver Lining Moments is NOT about pretending to the see the light shine when you feel you are standing under the clouds. That's make believe.
Actually seeing the light shine in that whole mind, body, heart, and soul kind of way requires something else:
Feel the feelings fully.
Acknowledge them.
Release them.
To see the SILVER LININGS in this MOMENT of psoriasis and frustration, I fully felt and acknowledged my feelings about my psoriasis and explored about why I felt them and if there were other feelings lurking beneath them. For me, I discovered that underneath the frustration were fear and resentment.
Basically, for part of this SLM Short, I vented. I let it all out.
And, I give you time to vent, rant, and let your frustrations, anger, fears, etc. out.
After doing this, I can see the SILVER LININGS in this moment. In fact, I saw two:
First, this moment of psoriasis and frustrative gives me an opportunity to test my process and self-care tools; to walk the talk so to speak. Realizing this reminded me of the times when my process pulled me through other dark moments. My process/self-care tools:
Just thinking of these previous times replaced some of that frustration and fear with gratitude and trust. Just as my process worked in the past, it will work now. PROCESS is a SILVER LINING MOMENT.
Second, this moment showed me how I am supported. In this past week, I had a few phone calls with different friends. Each one gave me space to vent. They did not judge me; and they did not minimize my feelings. Each one also reminded me of the light in myself, in my successes, and in the progress I have made. At a time when frustration, anger, fear, resentment blinded me , they shone light on me for me. Their FRIENDSHIP is a SILVER LINING MOMENT.

A moment of MOTHERHOOD is lined by Dreams
A SLM conversation with Bonnie Silvestri
Bonnie taught women in law classes that discussed legal issues around motherhood and families including topics like pregnancy and families in the workplace. When she became pregnant herself, these were no longer abstract issues in case books. They were personal. She realized that the whole "work life balance thing” was not so easily managed.
She began to look at family leave policies around the world – in particular, she looked at countries that provided paid family leave like England versus unpaid family leave in the United States. She questioned – was paid family leave as good as she imagined. She and her husband had an idea on how to answer this question.
They moved to England for 6 months where they filmed their documentary Funnel of Dreams, which is described on its website as:
"A Florida family goes on a quest to understand the impact of the United Kingdom’s policies for families, including paid parental leave, childcare services, and the children’s right to play. Journey with them to a small town in Wales as they navigate parenting their imaginative young daughter in a new culture."

Silver Lining Moments are every where, in each moment, even in your inbox and messages.
Last week, I received a few "just messages". The messages that have "just" somewhere in them, such as "I am writing just because I am thinking of you" or "I just wanted to let you know that you are important to me/that you are doing a good job/that I appreciate your friendship." Often, these messages are short in words but big in their positive impact.
These just messages are a ray of sunshine in my inbox that brighten my day and shine a light through the years in my heart. They are SILVER LINING MOMENTS.

Are you looking for a sign that you are on the right track? When I asked for a sign that Silver Lining Moments is a worthwhile focus of good in the world, I saw this "sign"; it's in the form of a SILVER-LINED bath tub in a storefront showcase.
Just like the light behind the cloud, a SILVER LINING MOMENT is always there - reminding us of the light in ourselves, in our conversations, in each other, and in each MOMENT. And, a SLM takes many forms - sometimes it's that little bit of encouragement or that "sign" you are looking for.
This SILVER-LINED bath tub was the encouragement I needed, when I needed it.
If you are looking for a sign that you are on the track, let this be it.

With very short snippets of: Give me a sign by Breaking Benjamin; Signs by Tesla, and The Sign by Ace of Base
SLMs are everywhere, in each moment.
This one is in the movie 13 Lives, which is about the real-life cave rescue of 12 boys and their soccer coach. They were trapped in the cave for 17 days. Some 10,000 people—including 2,000 soldiers, 200 divers and volunteers from around the world helped in their rescue. After watching this movie, I was in awe of how amazing people can be!
Director Ron Howard said it best:
“It’s a very contemporary theme that we need to remind ourselves of, and that is how powerful we can all be internationally or on a community level when we pull together.”
And, that is why 13 LIVES is a SILVER LINING MOMENT.

A SLM conversaion with eLayne Kelley - artist, author, tribe builder
A sharing of wisdom gained from life's journeys and a path to profound life changes made possible when we wake up to punishing thoughts
After my conversation with eLayne Kelley, I thought she, her vision for life, and her mission in life are gifts for humanity. As I thought this, I imagined hearing her acknowledging this with a soft boldness and adding something like “well, yes; each of us, you, me, everyone listening to this SLM podcast, each and every person everywhere -- we all are a gift to humanity, in our own soulful way; and in our soulfulness is where together, we are humanity.”
At the beginning of our conversation, eLayne Kelley casually refers to that time when she accidentally drove off a 20-foot cliff, as if it was an everyday experience, we all have. As she continued, it became clear that but for a series of serendipitous factors, she would have died that night. Luckily and thankfully, she didn’t. This was pivotal moment for her that shaped her life’s journey, vision, and mission.
After that pivotal “driving off a 20-foot cliff” moment, eLayne began a spiritual and intellectual quest crisscrossing the United States in search of answers to some of life’s biggest questions:
“Who am I”
“What happens after death”
“What is my life’s purpose”
In our conversation, we discussed:
eLayne Kelly now resides on the Guld Coast of Florida where, as she describes, “the gulf breezes, big water, and endless sky fuel the youth of [her] wisdom years”.
In our conversation, we didn’t talk directly about politics or societal issues or about division and conflict. However, after our conversation, I kept coming back to these thoughts:
We are different. When we share our differences, there is a unifying thread – our shared soul of humanity. There are many times in this conversation, where I caught myself shaking my head with understanding and thinking “I didn’t have that experience, but I had times where I felt like this…. I get this; I get you.”
Listen to this conversation with eLayne Kelle and experience:

Silver Lining Moments are everywhere.
This one involves a stray dog, named Bijou, from Tirana, Albania.
Today, I am launching a sub-series to Silver Lining Moments podcasts. Each week, I will be publishing a short Silver Lining Moment. However, with all that is going on in the world, I felt low in energy with a heaviness of heart.
Where -- or how - is a Silver Lining in any of these tragedies - shootings, war, conflict, natural disasters? Each week seems to bring a new tragedy, upheaval, and uncertainty. In all honestly, I have moments where I feel like the fabric of society is unraveling and the world is falling apart. I haven't been seeing or feeling a Silver LIning Moment in any of it.
So, instead of launching this series with a SLM short, I am launching it with an honest discussion about how to see the light when it feels we are surrounded in darkness. And, I affirm my trust that the light it is always there and my practice that helps me see it ---when I am not feeling it.
At the end, I was able to find a Silver Lining Moment after all!
A moment of LOVE is lined by KINDNESS
In this episode, I am doing something a little different. I am sharing a loving kindness meditation that I did with friends from around the world to expand love and kindness throughout the world.
For World Kindness Day in November of 2021, I invited 9 friends from the around world to join me in Zoom for a Loving Kindness Mediation. With this meditation, we are filling ourselves with love and kindness and extending love and kindness to the world.
Join in this meditation and feel the love and kindness fill your heart and soul. When you are loved, how do you feel? When you love someone else, how do you feel? Sit with these feelings. When you are filled with love and kindness, imagine your love and kindness expanding to others. Now, imagine people all over the world sitting doing this meditation and sending love and kindness into the world. See your love and kindness meet with theirs. From this place, our collective humanity is pretty cool, isn't it?!
You can also check out this guided meditation on YouTube at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PXONPoFYodE&t=10s. Beautiful photos of nature accompany the YouTube version. A big heartfelt thank you to Donna Harmony Jones for providing the photographs for this meditation. She captures the beauty in nature that foster a loving and kind energy for this mediation. To see more of Donna's photographs, check out Donna's website here: https://healwithharmony.com/photos/
I would love it if you let me know what you think and feel about this meditation. I have ideas for more meditations with Silver Lining Moments and would love to hear what you think. You can email me at: Kerry@SilverLiningMoments.com.
During today, may you be happy and healthy; may you be free from suffering, may you be free from negativity, drama and conflict.
During today, may you be immersed in peace, prosperity, positive energy, love and kindness.
During today, you you give and receive genuine acts of love and kindness.
With this meditation, I realized how we expand love and light,

A moment of LOSS is lined by EMPOWERMENT
“How can she be so happy and positive after all she’s been through?”
This is what Dr. Alisa Whyte’s mom asked the nurse when Alisa was lying in a hospital bed having lost life-threatening amounts of blood and facing the loss of her uterus.
These are just some of the traumatic losses she experienced.
At one point, she explained that “my soul was so tired” and how she felt frustrated with having done everything “they” said to do to be a happy and successful adult yet feeling stuck in loss.
This conversation is not about being stuck in loss. Alisa did not stay stuck.
THIS SLM CONVERSATION IS ABOUT LETTING GO, FINDING PEACE, LIVING YOUR PURPOSE
Dr. Alisa Whyte shares her own experiences of trauma and loss and her healing through these losses. She has been in the trenches of grief and anger and she shares her path to peace and joy. With tools grounded in self-awareness and gratitude, she deals with the tremendous life challenges that we all face from time to time while still living with purpose and with peace.
She now empowers others to do the same and to live with fulfillment, purpose, and joy.* Ambassador , Prof. Dr. Alisa Whyte is the dynamic, trailblazing Founder, President, and CEO of Fulfillment Empowerment Network, the Vice President of Save the Girl Child Advocacy, Africa. and the Accreditation Director for Europe, M.E.N.A and Asia at International Internship University (IIU). IN THIS CONVERSATION, WE DISCUSS:
During our conversation, I felt connected. In her losses, I felt loss. In her healing, I felt healing. I deeply understood that, although going through a loss can feel extremely lonely, we are not alone. And, as she experienced her message of self-awareness, authenticity, gratitude, and resilience, I was empowered on my own path of purpose and fulfillment. From my conversation with Dr. Alisa Whyte, I discover how:
A moment of LOSS is lined by EMPOWERMENT.

A moment of ONE is lined by TWO
A SLM Conversation with Shari Hunter, founder of the Two Cafe & Boutique
(Helping the world see the strengths and greatness in individuals with exceptionalities such as Down syndrome and autism)
Two are better than one. We lift each other up. As Shari Hunter, the guest of this episode, says “we can do it TWO-get
This idea of TWO is the inspiration for the name Two Café & Boutique (“the Two”) in Chagrin Falls, Ohio that was founded by Shari. While the Two serves delicious, organic, and healthy food and sells unique gifts and clothes, it’s purpose and vision is much more.
It serves as a training place and job placement coordinator for adults with exceptionalities such as Down syndrome and autism. At the Two, individuals gain real work experience and employment as they learn and practice job skills. They take these skills with them when they enter the workforce in their community. And, the Two started with Shari’s son, Derek.
| | | |
Shari explains that Derek is the reason behind the Two. When Derek was born with exceptionalities, Shari didn’t believe that his life should be limited as society often does. Neither did he. He graduated from Kent State University; he is married, and he is now working at the Two. If you have a moment, check out the Two’s website at: https://www.twocafeandboutique.com/
Through the Two, Shari and Derek, TWO-gether, give a message of love, purpose strength, unity, community, kindness, and more. If you want to fill yourself up with a positive outlook for humanity, you will want listen to this episode.
In this episode, Shari and I discuss:
Shari, Derek, and the TWO are the embodiment of “two are better than one”. We each have our strengths and skills; no one is perfect by themselves. On our own, we may limit our potential. With the support of others, our potential may be realized and expanded. And, we can be that support for others.
From this conversation, I felt the love for my fellow person and humanity; I was inspired to look for ways to live this idea of “two are better than one” in my own life and with Silver Lining Moments; and I discovered how a:

Have you ever felt broken?
A SLM conversation with KAREN MEYER
The guest of this SLM episode, Karen Myer, and I go back several years. We worked in the same law firm and we have an inside joke about Thursdays. During this one 6-month or so period in 2009, we were absolutely inundated with work. I would have a stress meltdown at her desk every Thursday. One week, I was so stressed and we had so many deadlines that I couldn’t even articulate anything other than “But Karen, It’s Thursday!”
Since then, and over 10 years later, “But, Karen, it’s Thursday” has become a code phrase for us, one with dual connotations:
Whenever it is said and however it is said, we are in it together – either supporting the other one or laughing with each other. We know that we were not alone when we felt like we were breaking. And, knowing that made all the difference. As hard as that time was, we could see the source of our stress - work. On those Thursdays, I felt like work was breaking me. At least, I could separate myself from that breaking feeling by separating myself from work.
What about those times when it is not something else that is breaking you; rather, when you feel like you are broken? The first comes with a sense of hope because that “brokenness” is outside of you and you can overcome it or with time it may change. However, when you feel you are broken you feel like whatever you do and wherever you go, the brokenness will go with you because it is you. This second broken feeling is called despair.
This is where Karen found herself in 2015: feeling like she was broken. When the despair was trying to take hold, she started having suicidal thoughts. Before this despair and its accompanying suicidal thoughts could get their full grip on her, she visited her family for the holidays. Their love steadied her enough for her to start reclaiming her worth.
In our conversation, we discuss:

Thank you for listening to Silver Lining Moments.

A moment of SCIENCE is Lined by SUPPORT
A SLM conversation with Kerry Flaherty Walia
Silver Lining Moments:
a space for conversations, feelings, and ideas that expand love and light
Scientists are silver linings for humanity. In a year filled with uncertainty, loss, and fear, they gave us guidance, confidence, and a plan forward. They gave us hope.
In the year of the pandemic, science has filled our screens and has become a part of our everyday lives. We have watched press conferences with scientists standing side by side with our leaders. We have read articles trying to understand the science behind Covid and the regulatory guidelines. We have seen research in action as vaccines were developed. With time, we began to see how we could and would overcome the hurdles thrown in front of us by Covid.
As we watched, read, and listened, we may not have understood all the data or research but one thing became crystal clear: scientists are an essential role in humanity’s survival. As we are jumping over the Covid hurdles, we see many more hurdles facing humanity-- climate change, degradation of food quality and water purity, depletion of natural resources and energy – to name a few. Through their systematic research and investigation, collaborations, questioning and testing, scientists will discover and develop pathways for us to cross the hurdles before us. (Of course, we must all do our part too, including things like not fertilizing our lawns or using environmentally friendly fertilizers.) So yes, and as I said above, I will say it again:
Scientists are silver linings for humanity.
This is one of the reasons I asked Kerry Flaherty Walia* to be a guest of Silver Lining Moments. (That, and we share the same name, with the same spelling.) Kerry is a marine fisheries research scientist. She studies how the environment and humans are affecting fisheries and the fish population. From her research, guidelines and regulations can be implemented; and our actions and behaviors can be adjusted. Simply, her research helps us save the fisheries and fish for future generations.
In our conversation, we discuss:
One topic that Kerry and I have discussed in the past, which I wanted to ask her about during our SLM conversation but forgot, is the interplay between science and religion. Some people think that spirituality and science are mutually exclusive and place them at odds with each other. Given the prominent role they both play in society, I find this topic interesting and worthwhile for us to have. Therefore, I emailed Kerry and asked if she would share her thoughts. This is what she said:
"Since your podcast centers on love and light, that directly links to spirituality. As a scientist (specifically a biologist), sometimes people are surprised that I am also a Christian. I personally don't think that the two are mutually exclusive. When I was a freshman at Florida State, my honors biology professor said something before he started the section on evolution that has always stuck with me. "Science explains the how, but God/faith/religion explains the why." Science itself is not a belief system, it is a process of figuring out how things work based on evidence. Although he may not agree with my opinion, Neill deGrasse Tyson famously said, "The good thing about science is that it's true whether or not you believe in it." For me, pursuing and applying knowledge of how biological processes work and evolve doesn't negate faith in a higher power."
This makes sense to me.
As I reflected on my conversation with Kerry, the word “support” came to mind, as it had come up throughout our conversation. I thought about - how science has supported humanity this past year, how Kerry’s work supports our natural resources for future generations, how having the support from others, and being the support for others, are key to our shared human experience. From my conversation with Kerry, I realize how:
a moment of SCIENCE is lined by SUPPORT.

Silver Lining Moments:

My husband Rob helps me look back at 2020. We talk about all my Silver Lining Moments guest this year. As I recall these conversations and think of my guests, I am once again renewed in spirit and hope by their positive insight and impact. If you haven’t had a chance to listen to these episodes, you may want to check them out – especially if want to feel connected to the goodness in the world.
We then talk about our Silver Lining Moments from 2020. Every moment, every year – even 2020 – has Silver Lining Moments. What was your 2020 Silver Lining Moment? Share in the comments, email me, message me, or just step into the light and feel the warmth of your Silver Lining Moment.
And, as a little bonus, this is Scribble, the dog that we talk about in this episode. Look at that pure joy - her favorite toy, outside in a park, can it get better than that?
From this conversation, I feel how....
a moment of REFLECTION is lined by LOVE.

A moment of HATE is lined by HEALING
A SLM conversation with Arlene Kline
Silver Lining Moments:
a space for conversations, feelings, and ideas that expand love and light
“Hate cannot drive out hate; only love can do that.” Martin Luther King, Jr.
I have read this quote many times. I believe its truth. It’s one thing to read these words and agree with them; it’s another to live by these words. The first part is easy; the second part, not so much.
How we do we live these words…especially when hate is being targeted at us?
Even with my 100% certainty in the truth of these words, my first reaction is often to fight back. Perhaps that is what drew me to litigation and what kept me there for so many years, even when I felt it wasn’t quite the right path for me. My desire to take these words from aspirational affirmation to daily action has been part of my personal journey. When I see someone living these words, I seek them out and ask them how. This brings me to the guest of this SLM episode, Arlene Kline.
Arlene and her family have personally been on the receiving end of antisemitic hate speech. Her response against this hatred is to educate others about it and to empower others to stand against it. Her efforts are not grounded in hate for the spreaders of antisemitism but in justice and equality underlined by a love for all humanity. She volunteers with the Anti-Defamation League (ADL), an anti-hate group that works to secure justice and fair treatment for all.
In this episode, Arlene and I discuss:
Each instance of hate is an opportunity to live these words of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Each time we live these words through our thoughts and our actions, our feelings will follow; healing happens. Each time, hate weakens and love strengthens.

A SLM conversation with Bart Scholtissen
Silver Lining Moments: a space for conversations, feelings, and ideas that expand love and light
In the episode, Bart Scholtissen shares his journey back to himself from a place focused on pleasing others. We discuss times in which we felt alone, disconnected from ourselves and others, and stuck but afraid of moving forward. I am guessing that many can resonate with these feelings this year.
Bart has a Ph.D. in neuroscience. After dedicating years to his education in earning his Ph.D. (no small task) and then working in academia, he got to a point where was unhappy and lost in life. He asked for help. He worked with a coach. He went out in nature. He connected with nature, himself, and with others. And, now he coaches others outside in nature.
Here are some discussion points in our conversation:
As you listen to this conversation, I hope that you get a true sense that you are not alone. We are together in this moment. From my conversation with Bart, I realize how:

A SLM conversation with Wijitra Tretrakul “Tra” Silver Lining Moments: a space for conversations, thoughts, and ideas that expand love and light
Sometimes, we just need to be heard. By listening to someone, without judgment or distraction, you are telling them, very clearly and very powerfully, that they matter. And, sometimes, that is all that is needed for transformational change.
Tra is a person who after you speak with you are filled with positive energy. She uses art therapy to help people connect with their self-love and self-worth. When someone connects with these, they find their voice and speak their truth in their words and through their actions.
In this conversation, Tra and I discuss:
My hope for you as you listen to this episode is that you are empowered by your own voice, that you feel heard, and that you know that you matter. By simply listening to this episode, you matter to me. Imagine how many other ways you matter, each and every day. Yes, you are amazing. Feel it. Believe it. Own it.

A SLM Special Edition: Bonus Conversation with Henry Yampolsky
Silver Lining Moments
a space for conversations, thoughts, and ideas that expand love and light
We are in a pivotal moment.
The killings of Ahmaud Arbery, George Floyd and the many before them, the peaceful protests, the riots, the looting, the different positions bombarding us by our leaders, pundits, and the media, and all the reactions touted on social media have forced us to look at our world and ourselves.
Yes, we are in a pivotal moment; we are in a moment of change. And, like most moments of change, conflict lurks around.
How can we peacefully work through the conflict to create meaningful and systemic social change? How can we maintain our health – mental, emotional and physical - in the process? With these in mind, I called upon SLM guest, Henry Yampolsky, who works in peace building and conflict resolution for some insight.
In this conversation, Henry shares 4 key components for creating meaningful, systemic and sustainable change:
My hope for you as you listen to this episode is that any overwhelm and hopelessness that you may have been feeling are replaced with grounding and hope. If we each do our respective inner work, we can expand our thoughts, explore possibilities, and create sustainable solutions that include everyone. In this moment of change, we can make a positive impact.

Ukrainian refugee, lawyer, motorcycle adventurer, yogi, and peace builder are some labels that describe SLM guest Henry Yampolsky. Underneath (or is it within) each label is an authentic individual committed to inner healing and collective peace. I found our conversation insightful and practical. And, for a moment, even in the midst of all the uncertainty swirling around in our world, I felt grounded and calm.
In this conversation, Henry and I discuss:
My hope for you as you listen to this episode is that you feel peace within yourself and for your community, and the world. As we are all facing a changing and uncertain world, together may we build peace in our homes, our neighborhoods, our cities, our nations, our world.

A moment of HEALING is lined by ENERGY
A SLM conversation with Hass Sadeghi
Energy – something that we cannot see, touch, smell, or taste. But, boy, can we feel it! Walk into a room, you feel its energy. A loved one's scornful look tears you down. A child’s laughter uplifts your soul. No words are said but energy is exchanged. It is all around us and within us; it fuels our lives.
How can we create and sustain the energy that we want in our lives?
My guest this episode is Hass Sadeghi. He answers this question as we discuss energy.

In 2010, Courtney had a good job with friendly colleagues and a stable income. Yet, her inner voice told her she needed a change. She listened.
In embracing change, she quit her job, traveled, and volunteered. Courtney describes these moments as “course-corrections” for her life. She found clarity for her purpose and passion. In so doing, she has and continues to make positive changes in her personal life, her professional life, and in an entire industry. She is a leader of sustainability in the event planning industry.

“Businesses can be a great force for good.” Do you agree with this statement?
If you agree with this statement, listening to a CEO share how his company reinforces this statement through its business decisions and operations is emboldening. If you do not agree with this statement, learning about a business that considers its impact on profits, yes, but also on its employees, the community, and the environment, may challenge your thoughts. Either way, this episode is for you.

Silver Lining Moments:

A traveler to many lands, Katie’s most meaningful journey has been one to her own personal growth. This episode starts and ends with Katie’s passion for creating more holistic education systems. For me, the conversation naturally coming around full circle shows how when we heal old traumas and give self-love to ourselves, we can overflow with love in our hearts and our thoughts toward others. To go full circle and get to this conclusion, a LOT was discussed in between.
Katie shares:

As 2019 is coming to an end, I wanted to take some time and reflect on Silver Lining Moments. To help me do this, my husband, Rob, interviewed me. Through his questions, I reflect on how and what Silver Lining Moments has meant to me.
I share what a Silver Lining Moment is. And, we discuss what I find challenging and rewarding about publishing this podcast:
My Silver Lining Moments of Silver Lining Moments is that after the moments where I compare Silver Lining Moments to other podcasts and feel not good enough is a moment where I get to step into and practice self-love and acceptance. Each time, the latter become stronger, the former weaken, and love expands. In discussing this with Rob, I realize how:

A SLM conversation with Tasha Chen
Silver Lining Moments:
a space for conversations, thoughts, and ideas that expand love and light
Manifesting and creating a RICH life of your dreams, broken down into everyday steps that work, is what Tasha Chen does and shares with the world. Tasha is the face of Science of Getting Rich Academy, a business she created with her business partner and best friend, Diane Bettencourt. They expand and share what they learned from reading, and LIVING the principles discussed in, the book, The Science of Getting Rich, by Wallace D. Wattles.
I attended Tasha and Diane’s first Science of Getting Rich Academy workshop in 2015. Having done personal development retreats in the past, I was not sure if I was going to learn anything new. But, at that point in my life, I knew that I needed to fill my cup up with some positive energy, reinforce some personal development tools, and I needed money. Plus, a very dear and trusted friend of mine gifted this workshop to me. I was glad that I went!
One thing they shared is that being RICH is more than money. RICH as an acronym for:
As Tasha tested the principles of Science of Getting Rich Academy and living the Certain Way, she knew that her success depended on being AUTHENTIC with herself. This meant being authentic
And, when she did, the ABUNDANCE just flowed, and continues to flow. Science of Getting RICH Academy went from barely breaking even with the 2015 workshop to having a global impact. Tasha is an international speaker, a workshop and retreat facilitator, a coach, a community leader and connector….an international presence.

Silver Lining Moments:
a space for conversations, thoughts, and ideas that expand love and light
“Enter as Strangers, Leave as Friends.” These words welcomed me as I was walked into Chocolate Moments in Brisbane, Australia. Walking into the store was a serendipitous happenstance that led to this episode with the store’s owner, Gerrard Gosens.
Gerrard Gosens was born with congenital blindness. Even though he has never seen a day in his life, he lives a life full of adventure and experiences. These are some of his accomplishments:
As he discusses these experiences and his outlook on life, it becomes clear that:
ALTHOUGH HE IS BLIND, HE IS A MAN WITH GREAT VISION

I walked into Chocolate Moments as a stranger but I left our SLM conversation as a friend. In my conversation with Gerrard, I realize how:

A SLM Conversation with Brent Kraus
Silver Lining Moments:
a space for conversations, thoughts, and ideas that expand love and light
Suicide. The next words that come to mind are often: sadness, shame, and stigma. My guest, Brent Kraus, shares his experience surrounding his brother’s suicide. His is a story of strength.
Suicide by the numbers:
It’s pervasive. It’s all around us. But, it’s not about numbers. It’s about individuals, many who use smiles to mask sadness, families and communities.
Brent shares his experience of losing his brother by suicide, his love for his brother, and the incredible loss he felt. He was working at a tech job, coding in a cubicle. During this time, he listened to a podcast about earning money while following your passion. From this, Brent got an idea to form a business that honors his brother's memory, celebrates his brother’s love of fashion and bow-ties and that advocates for suicide prevention and awareness. He discussed this with his mother and Ella Bing Bow Ties (now Ella Bing Haberdashery) was born. Brent focuses on the business side and his mother and father make the bow ties.
As I listened to Brent, I was overcome by the Silver Lining he and his family are for those affected by suicide. Many, those struggling with suicidal thoughts and those who lost someone to suicide, deal with shame and stigma. When shame and stigma exist, they have a way of darkening the clouds of depression, grief, and loneliness. Yet, when people share their stories of suicide, shame and stigma cannot persist; compassion and love take their place. And, in this place, healing can happen; the dark clouds can be lifted; and connection with others restored. By sharing their experience and through Ella Bing Haberdashery, Brent and his family are shining compassion and love for others to see their way through the darkness. In this light, there is no place for shame and stigma. They are saying: you are not alone; I understand you; I support you.
As part of their advocacy work, Ella Bing Haberdashery supports the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay. “[O]ut of a passion to help provide resources for suicide prevention and awareness after individually experiencing the loss of a loved one due to suicide[,]” Brent and Kim Randall started an annual fundraiser Beer & Bow Ties. This September’s Beer & Bow Ties raised $91,000! As Brent explains, it is not a sad event, rather, it is a celebration that “Every Life Is Worth Living.”

A SLM conversation with Greg Pettit
(in spirit and memory of Mamie Brisker Pettit)
A MOMENT OF DEATH IS LINED BY LIFE
Silver Lining Moments:
a space for conversations, thoughts, and ideas that expand love and light
What do you do when someone you love, someone so full of life, suddenly and tragically loses theirs? I was faced with this question in May 2018. Or, more like it, this question punched me in the face and knocked me down in May 2018. In the days since, I searched for this answer --- in my tears, in photographs, in conversations with friends, in following my dreams, in my journal writing, in yoga, in moments of staring into space, and in my questions – Why? What for? What?!
But, let me take you 10 months before then. I was visiting my friends Mamie and Greg. Mamie and I were sitting on their patio having a good conversation about everything. I asked Mamie if she would be a guest on this podcast. At that time, this podcast was only an idea that had been brewing in my mind for a few years. Mamie didn’t question whether I would actually follow through with the idea; she was excited about it, believed in Silver Lining Moments, and believed in me. She said yes. It took me another 15 months – 6 months after Mamie’s death -- before I published the first Silver Lining Moments episode. I didn’t get the chance to have my Mamie on this podcast.
This left me feeling unsettled. I recalled all ways Mamie was a Silver Lining Moment in my life and all the reasons why I wanted her as a guest. Because of my delay and inaction, I didn’t get to share her light with the world. So, I asked Mamie’s husband, Greg, if he would be a guest on this podcast. With the same encouraging spirit as Mamie, he readily said yes. In this episode, Greg shares Mamie with us, how they followed their dreams, and his loss, grieving, and healing. By doing so, Greg made a wish of mine come true.
Now, my wish for you is that by listening to this episode:
LOVE AND LIGHT EXPAND
Mamie’s love has expanded even after her death through her family and friends. This expansion is in our hearts, our lives, and has manifested in many ways. Here are just two:
Saving Lives with 5 Defibrillators: Through the kind donations of family and friends, Greg bought five defibrillators. These were donated to local clinics, a doctor’s office, a neighborhood that hosts both indigenous people and expats, and a local meet spot for all the expats that hosts plays and a Tuesday vegetable market. In developing countries like Panama, places like these do not have defibrillators. Now five of them do. They will save lives.
Empowering Lives with Scholarship Fund: Mamie’s sister, Carrie Brisker Purcell, created the Mamie Brisker Pettit Memorial Scholarship Fund through the Scioto Foundation. To be eligible for the scholarship, a student must be a graduating senior at Minford and/or Notre Dame High School, have a minimum grade point average of 3.0 on a scale of 4.0 and show evidence of excellence in academics and athletics.

A SLM conversation with J. Kim Wright
Silver Lining Moments:
a space for conversations, thoughts, and ideas that expand love and light
What do you when you find yourself in a profession that sucks the life out of you? Well, when you get to the point where you say “enough”, you have two choices – leave the profession or change it? My guest, J. Kim Wright decided to change it; and, by doing so, she has made a positive impact - worldwide, a thousand times over.
Earlier in her legal career, Kim found the legal system to be set-up in a way that flames conflict and destroys relationships. In law school, lawyers are taught to (in fact, they have a duty to) zealously represent their clients. Put this zealous representation in an adversarial system, the focus is on the fight, lawsuits are referred to as battles, and negotiations seen as a way to one-up the other side. Now, when those, who became lawyers thinking they were going to help others or society, are thrown into this system, they don’t quite fit in. Something has got to give. Often, it is the soul and health of those lawyers. Even though they may feel alone, there are many of “those” lawyers.
And, this is not unique to lawyers. This situation is familiar to anyone who has ever looked up during the work day wondering: Is this what it is all about? What am I doing in this career? Is this me – is this what I am all about?
Kim asked herself those questions. In answering them, she first worked on herself and a personal transformation. She became very clear with her goals and vision for herself as a person, as a lawyer, and for the legal system. This clarity transformed into a sense of purpose and quest for societal and systems transformation.
This SLM episode is for anyone who has ever felt disillusioned with their profession, their organization, or any established system – political, governmental, economical, etc., both lawyers and non-lawyers. From Kim’s quest for the transformation of the legal system, we learn some steps for change-making:
Kim started with a very clear vision that included:
Lawyers are now recognized for our true purpose: peacemaking, problem-solving, and healing the wounds of the community. We are changemakers in society. Trials are rare and civil. Collaboration, prevention, and transformation are the lawyers’ stock in trade. We create sustainable agreements and resolutions.
Lawmakers serve, conscious of all the stakeholders, and of our interconnectedness with Nature and each other. They work on common goals and shared values to benefit everyone.
See Kim’s full Vision, Mission, and Values statement on her website at: http://jkimwright.com/vision/.
She interviewed others who were doing what she envisioned. They became the basis for her books, Lawyers as Peacemakers and Lawyers as Changemakers. She has gone on to become a leader in the integrative law movement, writer, speaker, systems change maker, servant leader, and author. She works with governments and communities to create harmony building policies and practices; she trains lawyers and business leaders, and she coaches individual lawyers. She built a world-community of like-minded lawyers who share a similar vision and purpose. Together, they are making positive impact in their communities and our world.
From my conversation with J. Kim Wright, I discover how:
a moment of DISILLUSIONMENT is lined by TRANSFORMATION.

A SLM conversation with Theodore “Ted” Mayer
Silver Lining Moments:
a space for conversations, thoughts, and ideas that expand love and light
Can we save the world by restoring our sense of connection?
My guest this week is Ted Mayer. He is an anthropologist, educator, an Academic Director of The International Network of Engaged Buddhist (INEB) Institute and help design INEB’s School of English for Engaged Social Service (SENS) program. Sulak Sivaraksa and others founded SENS in 2015 “…to meet the crises of climate change, increasing social inequality, and individual confusion and despair about what to do. Its aim is to create a safe and supportive place for learning English as a tool for leadership, self-cultivation, and social transformation.”[1]
In our conversation, Ted points to DISCONNECTION as an underlying force of these global crises. Think about it. While we are connected to our phones, social media, and apps, there is a growing and steady disconnection from ourselves, from our communities, from society, and from nature. This disconnection ushers in a sense of overwhelm, anxiety, cynicism and hopelessness. Restoring our sense of connection restores our collective hope and resilience. And, these are stepping stones to positive change.
Putting these ideas to action, TED shares how he used care and concern about these global crises to design the curriculum for SENS that addresses these crises while empowering SENS’ participants through a restored connection to themselves and their purpsose, to others, and to our shared world. He shares some of his techniques and practices including creating a culture of appreciation and using co-counseling principles.
Through SENS, Ted and The INEB Institute restore CONNECTION – deep, genuine, and lasting connection. He creates a culture of appreciation where each participant is valued and where they are taught English, communication skills, relationship building, and most of all, self-love.
After completing SENS, participants, many of whom work for NGOS, community projects, or schools, take their restored and empowered selves back to their communities. As a former volunteer tutor with SENS, I can say with 100% confidence that Ted, INEB, and SENS are transforming lives and adding light to our world – one person a time and one course at a time. With participants from across the world, their positive impact expands in all directions.
From my conversation with Ted, I realize how: a moment of crises is lined by connection.

Silver Lining Moments:

If the news and media leave you worried that daunting clouds, caused by systemic power and political structures, are hovering over humanity's future, it would be normal to be a bit cynical. Listen to this episode and focus on the people who are restoring humanity's stewardship for each other, for other animals, for our planet -- for our collective future. Serena is an example of someone living a purposeful life, focused on self-growth, human unity and community, and in harmony with our environment. Serena and others like her are the silver lining to these clouds. By focusing on them, we are expanding their light.

“Music Lab, we don’t focus on teaching music; we focus to use music as a channel to make people happy. The goal is building consciousness in the freedom of people.”
Enaut Marti,
Co-founder of Music Lab
& this month’s guest of Silver Lining Moments
Enaut Marti is from the Basque Country. We met in India a few years ago while volunteering at Mother Teresa’s Missionaries of Charity. He is currently living in Shanghai, China where he co-founded Music Lab.
He began playing the guitar when he was three years old. Now, some twenty plus years later, he co-founded Music Lab. At Music Lab, teaching music is secondary to developing the students’ happiness. Our conversation about music and happiness led to a discussion about music and mindfulness.
Think about it. When you’re in your car and your favorite song comes on the radio, and as you are singing at the top of lungs, are you thinking about your work, finances, relationships? When you are in the shower and singing, what can only be described as a Tony Award performance, are you thinking about your to-do list, last night’s meal, or tomorrow’s meetings? No! In those moments, you are practicing mindfulness.
However, before our conversation turned to Music Lab, Enaut and I discuss our volunteer experience with the Missionaries of Charity. Enaut shares how scrubbing a door for hours to remove paint was a silver lining moment in his life. In a very genuine and a completely unpretentious way, he talks about his efforts to live with purpose and follow his dreams. His comments and ideas left me with many insights and much inspiration.
From India to Shanghai, he has learned the importance of giving gratitude and unconditional love. He uses both gratitude and unconditional love as a living mantra guiding his daily life and his business. And, by doing so, he shows us how:

My guests Carrie Yu and Joe Harvey are passionate, bright, and dedicated social entrepreneurs. Carrie Yu created The Bulk House to promote and empower others to live a Zero Waste Lifestyle. In this episode, she is joined by her partner, Joe Harvey. We discuss what the zero waste lifestyle is; why it is important; and how you can make a positive impact by living it.
It is not surprising that a conversation with two entrepreneurs is filled with new business ideas. We discussed creating standardized wine bottles for a circular economy and an Earth Friendly Business Index. What became clear is - there is space to do good, live in harmony with each other and the environment, and prosper.
All of this started when Carrie was frustrated with her career. She wanted to do something that made a positive impact and that was in line with her values. During her search, she came across information about the Zero Waste Lifestyle. From this search, The Bulk House was born. Listen to our conversation and discover how:

[A note about the recording: I met Carrie and Joe in a building near the center of Beijing. We searched for a quiet space to record our conversation. Unfortunately, the quietest space we found still has some background noise including some loud bangs. However, as I listened to the recording, the background noise faded as I became more engaged in the conversation.]

I, for one, think that Thanecha has already "made it" as she is living a life of her dreams while making a positive impact on those around her.

Silver Lining Moments: a space for conversations, thoughts, and ideas that expand love and light
Thanecha Anderson's life was filled with uncertainty. Growing up, Thanecha was homeless living in homeless shelters, a milk truck, and a school bus until her family moved into the projects. While still a child, she became the caretaker of her father as he was battling cancer. Yet, she shines.
In 2015, she quit her day job to “make it” as a singer and to serve others as a human advocate. While there may be uncertainty in how she will “make it”, Thanecha is confident that she will! This confidence flows from her clarity and knowing that she is living in integrity with her dreams, her purpose, and her values. As she shares her experiences and lessons learned, we realize that when we live through uncertainty, we gain confidence and as we gain confidence, we accept uncertainty. And, we see how a moment of uncertainty is lined by confidence.
This is Part 1 of a 2-Part episode. In Part 2, Thanecha gives us an update on her singing career and additional insights about life.

Silver Lining Moments - a space for conversations, thoughts, and ideas that expand love and light.
After the sudden death of her mother, Larissa fulfilled her mother's wishes of supporting charities and good causes through her The Year of Giving Generously Project. This project expanded beyond a year and has helped over 26 charities including organic farmers in Laos, a care center in Thailand, a school in Nepal, and many more. With each one, she empowered individuals to expand their own positive impact.
In one sense, The Year of Giving Generously was a way of saying goodbye to her mother but it was also about the new people Larissa met, the good causes she helped support, and how she got to become closer to her mother. Listen to Larissa share her experiences and discovery how:
a moment of goodbye is lined by many hellos
This is one of my first recordings I did while traveling. We were sitting outside on steps overlooking the sea with the sunset shining on us. Please don't let the sound issues (my learning curve) over shadow Larissa's meaningful insights and earnest feelings.

In this Silver Lining Moments episode, I speak with Eddie Cheyfitz and Katie Eichenhauer of Believe in Dreams. A Silver Lining Moment includes lessons learned. Here are some of the lessons (Silver Lining Moments) I learned from my conversation with Eddie and Katie:
Good, kind, and uplifting people are all around us…perhaps even sitting at the next table over at Starbucks, which is how I met Eddie.
People like helping others and doing good. Eddie shared how businesses who helped fulfill a child’s dream were enriched by the experience.
It is okay to receive support. When we are supported, we can achieve so much!
Believing in someone and letting them know they count empowers. Showing children that we believe in them and care about them, and giving them access to support and to opportunities for healing and hope can change their life paths.
The loss of a loved one can have many silver linings.
It can be the birth of something new like Believe in Dreams. After the death of his mother, Cal and John talked about how they could help other children who do not have the same support and opportunities they have. Their family including Eddie and Katie came together and helped build their vision into Believe in Dreams, which has helped over 100 children so far.
The pain we feel and the healing we experience opens our heart where compassion grows.
Loved ones come together. Their love is expanded.
Something to think about
Katie and Eddie shared how support from others was vital for their success and for Believe in Dreams. Yet, sometimes our culture takes great pride in doing things all by ourselves and being self-made. Does this limit our ability to reach our highest and fullest potential? Does this way of thinking rob us of our humanity?
