There are 8 herpes viruses that infect humans, including HSV1, HSV2, Shingles (Herpes Zoster), Chickenpox, Mononucleosis, and Epstein-Barr (chronic Mono). All share a common need for ARGININE amino acid.

Did you know that shingles is a Herpes virus?

Shingles Herpes Virus is a reactivation of Chicken Pox and can occur or reoccur anytime when overly stressed, Vitamin D stores are low, or excess Arginine is consumed (see below for more on Arginine).

Clients and Primal Diet – Modern Health Podcast listeners often ask me: “Which is better – Ghee or Coconut Oil?”

Here’s a description and info on the benefits of each.

Both Ghee and Coconut Oil are saturated fats. Despite what we have been told, saturated fats are healthier than seed oils for us hunter-gatherer humans. Canola, Corn and Soy “vegetable” oil are high in Omega 6 fats – the one we want to avoid.

These saturated fats cook better than seed oils and taste wonderful.

The taste choice is up to you and the food you put it on. Or use both liberally as many do, depending on what you are cooking.

Can eggs cause gallbladder problems?

Yes! I have seen a wide variety of Clients’ digestive and gallbladder symptoms improve after eliminating eggs.

This is true whether you have a gallbladder or not.

What Does the Gallbladder Do?The liver makes bile and sends it to the gallbladder underneath the liver. The Gallbladder concentrates and stores bile until needed to digest fats.

The Gallbladder is connected to the top of the small intestine (the Duodenum) by a bile duct. As you eat, the gallbladder pumps bile through the duct and into the intestine, emulsifying fats for digestion by the enzyme Lipase. These fats carry the fat-soluble Vitamins A, D, K and E throughout the body.

How Eggs Cause Gallbladder Problems* Food sensitivity to eggs * Or reaction to Fat and Cholesterol?

Food Sensitivity to EggsDr. Jonathan Wright cited a study by Dr. J.C. Breneman in 2018 that tested food sensitivities and the gall bladder with an elimination diet. The study was titled: Food Allergy as a Cause of Gallbladder Disease.

The test showed that eggs were by far the #1 food sensitivity causing gallbladder spasm when eating eggs after an elimination period.

92.8% of participants reported pain after eating eggs. Here are two slides from that presentation showing egg sensitivity affecting the Gallbladder. See Slides #15 and #16 here.

Fat and Cholesterol in EggsThe medical view of fats and gallbladder disease relates only to the saturated fat and cholesterol content in eggs. “Conventional” wisdom says to avoid meats, fats, butter in general.

Most websites discussing what to eat for the gallbladder refer only to the fat content of egg yolks as what is bad for gallbladder health.

Some medical sites say to avoid egg yolks, some say they are OK.

Science no longer supports the view that a conservative amount of eggs is bad for you. Read more here on cholesterol and heart disease – what does the science say?

This article and Podcast review the 2015 USDA report that quietly declared cholesterol safe – a food no longer “a nutrient of concern”.

Eating Eggs Without a GallbladderIf you have lost your Gallbladder, do an egg elimination and provocation trial.

Eliminate them 100% (mayo, dressings, baked goods, etc.) for at least 2 to 3 months and watch for beneficial changes in digestion, pain, headaches, nausea and bowels.

Then try 1 to 2 egg yolks a week, with a gently cooked pastured yolk. Do this for a few weeks observing for digestive symptoms, pain, changes in stool.

If that goes well (and you’re paying attention), try just cooked egg white, 2 per week for several weeks.

Then try the whole egg 2 or 3 per week if no issues.

If you’re nauseous, burping, dizzy or in pain, eggs are not good for your particular gallbladder system – even if the Gallbladder itself has been removed. The occasional egg may be fine but not every week.

Eggs are eliminated in Paleo Autoimmune Protocols and Dr. Terry Wahl’s diet as well.

What to Eat When You Have No Gallbladder1. Gluten-free foods 2. Cooked vegetables 3. Moderate amounts of fruit 4. Minimal other grains as well, especially corn 5. Leaner meats, poultry and seafoods 6. Controlled use of butter, ghee, avocado oil, coconut oil, etc.

What to Eat for Breakfast Without EggsI always advise Clients – whether eating eggs or not – to eat dinner for all meals.

This means breakfast, lunch and dinner should look pretty much the same – proteins, vegetables, fats, and perhaps a small serving of tuber such as potato or yam.

This recipe roundup from dozens of Paleo bloggers has ideas for you to break the egg habit.

Elimination Diet for Gallbladder PainAvoid these foods for several weeks or months before trying them slowly one at a time:

  • Dairy (except butter and ghee)
  • Eggs
  • Gluten (here’s why)
  • Corn
  • Canola and other Hydrogenated Oils
  • Processed foods
  • Refined sugar and high carb “foods”
  • Fatty meats such as ribs

Passion Flower for sleep and calming is a great alternative to random herb mixes or calming medications. Passion Flower for Sleep and Calming Passion Flower is well-known historically for its calming properties. The “amount” of calming depends on the dose (see below).

You can take Passion Flower during the day and during the night, with or without food. Try it before business meetings, when anxious, before bed AND during the night if you wake up and your mind is busy.

It helps calm pain, anxiety and can help menstrual cramps too.

Passion Flower Tincture in Alcohol or GlycerinI sell both types of Passion Flower tincture. Buying this in liquid form gives you more versatility than buying in capsules. There are times you may not want a full dose. Drops let YOU choose.

The glycerin extract contains no alcohol and has a sweet taste. It has no calories and is not a toxic artificial sweetener. This is ideal for dosing on the go, or in the middle of the night when you can take it straight by mouth.

The tincture also comes in an alcohol base. This works fine but you may need to add it to a little water to dilute the alcohol taste.

Here’s the link to see Passion Flower tincture in Glycerin in my online store. Here is Passion Flower extract in an alcohol base.Dose Passion Flower for Sleep and CalmingTake 30 to 60 drops of the Glycerin extract in the middle of the night if you wake and need help to relax body and mind. Try 10 to 20 drops at the stop light while driving the car on a too-busy day. Or before a difficult phone call. Use Passion Flower in the evening to help you relax instead of alcohol. The dosage instructions on the bottle say “Take 10 to 50 drops, 1 to 4 times daily”. In other words, take as much as you need! So, if it’s a 40 drop night, then go for it. If it’s a 20 drop night or day, that’s fine too. Repeat as needed.More Uses for Passion FlowerBesides sleep, Passion Flower is good at taking the edge off your daily, high-speed, “get it done” mode. Being calmer helps you focus better and feel happier. We have families who buy a bottle for every family member, kids as well as adults, to keep by their beds and put into their backpacks or briefcases. It won’t make you sleepy, unless you take a full dose or two, but it will noticeably calm anxiety, irritability, and, helps pain such as menstrual cramps.Passion Flower supports the Parasympathetic GABA neurotransmitter as well as Serotonin. Here is one article on GABA deficiency and how it affects every area of our health. This article and Primal Diet – Modern Health Podcast speaks to my top 5 supplements for stress and fatigue. Here’s one on sleep tips, suggesting Passion Flower with other suggestions. The Lysine Arginine ratio vs. quantity can confuse Herpes patients. It’s not hard to understand! The key to managing Herpes is the quantity of Arginine you eat, NOT the ratio of Lysine to Arginine alone.

Lysine, Arginine and Herpes1). What is Lysine? Lysine is one of 23 Amino Acids in food. Amino acids are proteins which combine to make hundreds of substances in the body . They also perform many jobs on their own. * Lysine is one of 9 essential amino acids – we cannot make these. We must consume them in food or supplements. * We use Lysine for sleep, bone-building, immune support, and antiviral defense, especially for conditions like Herpes, Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) and Shingles.*

2). What is Arginine?* Arginine is an amino acid that we CAN make on our own. It is especially high in seeds, grains, beans, coconut meat and most protein powders.

3). Lysine, Arginine & Herpes Arginine feeds the Herpes Simplex Virus (HSV). Arginine can also stimulate Epstein-Barr Virus activity and may worsen flare-ups of Shingles* in some individuals. * Reducing Arginine helps you gain control of HSV. * Lysine acts in opposition to Arginine and helps suppress it. My 90 minute Herpes Relief Guide covers all of this, plus supplement info.

Lysine Arginine Ratio vs. Quantity* Many charts and graphs show the calculated ratios of Lysine to Arginine in foods for Herpes and Epstein-Barr management. + For example, if a serving of wheat has 1000 mg Lysine and 3000 mg Arginine, the ratio is 0.33 (very bad). + If a serving of beef has 2000 mg Lysine and 1000 mg Arginine, the ratio is 2:1 (good!). * By looking at ratios, you find abundant Lysine (more than 1:1 ratio) in animal protein and dairy. * Vegetables may have high or low ratios, but all have minimal quantities (except peas, beans and lentils). * Grains, nuts, seeds and coconut meat have lots of Arginine and contain ratios less than 1 to 1.

Do not be confused! The ratio is of some help in HSV but it’s not the main story.

Lysine and Arginine Quantities in FoodsThe key to Herpes management is reducing the AMOUNT of Arginine you eat.

It’s misleading to worry about a poor ratio in vegetables when the Arginine content is low. For example:

  • 1 cup Brussels sprouts has 130 mg Lysine and 178 mg Arginine (a poor ratio). The difference is only 48 mg.
  • A 4 oz serving of beef has 1820 mg Lysine and 1425 mg Arginine — a net Lysine gain of 400 mg, similar to taking one 500 mg Lysine supplement.

If you eat the way I teach Paleo for Herpes with animal proteins, fats, vegetables and a small amount of tubers, your Lysine to Arginine balance will change VERY quickly. I have seen many Clients permanently reduce chronic outbreaks in 2 weeks of higher Lysine quantity foods.

Examples of Lysine and Arginine Quantities in Food 4 oz Meat: 2450 mg Lysine / 1730 mg Arginine — a major Lysine boost, ideal for anyone managing viral conditions like Epstein-Barr or Herpes. * 1 cup Yogurt: 700 mg Lysine / 235 mg Arginine — high Lysine food.
(Note: Some with
Epstein-Barr or Herpes have dairy sensitivities.) * 1 slice Cheese: 500–700 mg Lysine / 200–300 mg Arginine.
(Again, may be hard for some to digest.) *
Butter and oils: Almost zero Lysine or Arginine — they’re fat, not protein. * 3 oz Fish (deck of cards size): 1550 mg Lysine / 1000 mg Arginine — an excellent choice for Herpes, EBV and Shingles*.

Lysine and Arginine in Fruits and VegetablesMost fruits and vegetables have very little protein, and therefore minimal Lysine or Arginine. Green peas and lentils are exceptions.

  • 1 cup Green Peas: 460 mg Lysine / 625 mg Arginine — higher Arginine load, so limit if Herpes or Epstein-Barr is active.
  • 1 cup Green Beans: 97 mg Lysine / 80 mg Arginine — ratio is good, and Arginine quantity is low.

Questions on the Lysine-Arginine Ratio1. What foods have the most Arginine? Grains, seeds, nuts, bone broth, gelatin, collagen and coconut meat. And most protein powders. 2. Is the Paleo Diet the best place to start? Yes! Paleo eliminates grains. We did not evolve to graze on grass seed. Here is the Paleo Diet Adapted for Herpes article and Podcast. 3. Once I stop grains and increase animals, fats and veggies, will my outbreaks stop? That depends on many factors: stress levels, skin friction; your overall health and immune status. 4. Why can I eat coconut oil or almond oil but not coconut meat or almonds? Fats have no protein. 5. Are gelatin capsules OK? Yes. There is only a tiny amount of protein in gel caps. This potent anti-viral made for HSV has an anti-viral herb and traces of gelatin. It’s a great product! 6. Can’t I take lots of Lysine and eat what I want? A band-aid approach does not help the inflammation from eating grains. Here’s a quality Lysine in my Online Store. 7. When is the best time to take Lysine? On an empty stomach is best but it won’t hurt to take with food. It just doesn’t work as well when mixed with protein in the meal. 8. Is there a free chart of the quantities and ratios? Yes, here is a good one.

ConclusionManaging Herpes, Epstein-Barr and Shingles through diet means focusing on high-Lysine, low-Arginine foods, especially from animal protein. Reducing grains, seeds, and processed protein powders can dramatically change how often symptoms appear. With the right nutrition, many people find lasting relief from chronic outbreaks. Nuts and seeds Topics – the good and the bad* Healthiest nuts and seeds * Reducing Phytic Acid content * Calories in nuts and seeds * Omega 3 and 6 fats * Baking with Almond and Coconut Flour * Nut and seed snacks * Nuts and Seeds on a Herpes Diet

Healthiest Nuts and Seeds1. Almonds have excellent flavor, versatile for baking, snacking and food toppings. Studies show they have more Vitamin E than most foods. 2. Brazil Nuts have abundant Selenium, a mineral that helps chelate heavy metals such as Mercury. Three Brazil Nuts supply plenty of selenium. They are also anti-inflammatory as Dr. Axe details. 3. Walnuts have more beneficial Omega 3 fatty acids than any other nut or seed. These are the best heart-healthy nuts. They make excellent toppings for salads and vegetables too. I like these Brussel Sprouts with Bacon and Walnuts. 4. Pistachios have plenty of fiber, protein and antioxidants.

Phytic Acid in Nuts and SeedsPhytic acid is an anti-nutrient coating that keeps seed from sprouting prematurely. Unfortunately, it binds up minerals in our intestines, so we lose some of the valuable minerals in nuts and beans that way.

Soaking will remove much of this. Soaking will NOT remove the gluten and gluten-related toxins and lectins however. This is one reason why Ancestral Diets such as my Diet For Human Beings, and the Primal Blueprint diet suggest avoidance of all grains and beans.

Soaking almonds overnight in water and rinsing in the morning will reduce much of the Phytic Acid. The almonds will be chewy and moist and will last only a day or two in the fridge. Delicious!

This article and Primal Diet – Modern Health Podcast detail soaking out Phytic acid in Quinoa and Wild Rice. They are also seeds…

This one talks specifically about prepping seeds and nuts to remove seed toxins.

Calories in Nuts and SeedsNuts and seeds have somewhat equal calorie amounts from protein, fats and carbs. They are pretty high in calories overall, but not from starchy sugars such as bread or cookies.

1/4 cup of Walnuts (1 ounce) has 185 calories, 4 grams protein, 4 grams carbohydrate and 2 grams of fiber. They have 18 grams of fat.

Cashews have the highest fat of all – 1/4 cup of cashews can yield 300 calories and 25 grams of fat.

If you are eating Paleo and losing weight you don’t want to lose, add soaked almonds or cashews to help gain weight.

If your weight loss has plateaued on your Paleo Diet, check the amount of nuts and seeds (and nut butters) you’re eating. You may be using them as convenience foods rather than the condiments they really are.

Omega 3 and 6 Fats in Seeds or NutsNuts contain varying amounts of Omega 6 polyunsaturated fats – the bad ones we want to balance with Omega 3 fats. The nuts lowest in Omega 6 PUFA’s are macadamias, hazelnuts, almonds, cashews and chestnuts. These are your best nut choices.

Baking With Almond or Coconut Almond flour makes great muffins, quiche and pancakes, but like whole almonds, it can contain phytic acid. Fortunately, buying blanched almond flour means the almonds have been skinned (removing much of the phytic acid and seed toxins) and then blanched, removing even more. Blanched almond flour is still very high in calories though, so a little goes a long way. Avoid almond meal, as it has the skins still on it and has not been blanched.

Nuts, seeds and coconut flakes make crunchy toppings or a simple crushed coating. Good on fish or chicken. Or top vegetables with them.

Nut and Seed SnacksAlmond Butter on apple or celery makes a good snack – portable too. The skins are removed before the almonds are ground to butter.

Peanuts are NOT nuts, but legumes (bean family). I don’t recommend them to Clients as they are moldy and allergenic.

There are many snack bars with nuts but most contain mostly dates and are high in fruit sugar. Look for those with fruit as the lowest ingredient. This article and Podcast on Paleo Road Trip Snacks details more.

Nuts and Seeds on a Low-Arginine Herpes DietIf you have any RetroVirus such as Herpes, Epstein Barr, Shingles or Cytomegalo Virus, avoid nuts unless you take a Lysine capsule with them. These viruses feed on Arginine amino acid that is high in nuts, all grains and chocolate. Taking the Lysine will help, but don’t overdo…. This article on Best and Worst Foods for Herpes explains more. I carry several great supplements for these viruses in my online store and clinic as well. See some here.

As you control your outbreaks with a low-Arginine Diet you can add some nuts back to your diet if they do not trigger an outbreak.

Gluten-safe kissing is important to talk about. If you’re sensitive to gluten, what happens when a kissable partner has eaten pizza or had a beer lately? How careful do we need to be?

Can we get “glutened” from kissing?

Several studies show that proteins from foods can linger in the mouth several hours after consumption. Some mouths clear them faster than others.

Rules for Gluten-Safe Kissing 1. Check your own make-up, lipstick, chapstick, lotions, soaps and shampoos. 2. Check your partner’s bathroom as well. 3. Kisses on the cheek are fine, as long as no saliva or obvious crumbs travel along. 4. Kissing kids on the mouth or gooey fingers can dose you with gluten if they just ate a PB&J or cookie. 5. The general consensus is that your partner should avoid gluten foods such as bread, pizza, beer, etc. on date night for at least an hour before kissing.

This is a topic that could fill four newsletters, but I want to mention some points about grains that I feel strongly about. First let’s talk about gluten.

Gluten is a protein found in wheat, rye, barley, and spelt, and is a contaminant in most oats as they are often shipped or processed with wheat. Gluten-free diets are becoming well-known now, and many scientific studies are showing that gluten intolerance is much more common than previously suspected.

The digestive systems of herbivores and carnivores tells a lot about what each are meant to eat. Humans model carnivore digestion patterns.

Digestive systems of herbivores vs. carnivores I began researching equine digestion to check a hunch that my elderly pony had an ulcer. She was biting her sides and seemed uncomfortable.

In learning her non-human digestive system, several points became clear.

Some creatures are born to be vegetarians, and some are not. Should humans be vegetarians? Looking at differences in digestion may help answer that question.

There are several common foods to avoid with Herpes or Shingles. You may be eating these daily!

Having personally struggled with both these viruses, I’ve learned my tolerance level of these foods when well and when stressed.

Herpes viruses live in the nervous system, and when we’re overtaxed, anxious or angry, inflammatory stress hormones and other substances suppress the immune system, allowing the virus to overwhelm our defenses.

When you’re feeling strong, healthy and rested, you may be able to handle these edibles better. It’s not just the items themselves, but how your health is at the time you eat them.

Another factor is the quantity you’re eating. A nibble? A full plate? A combo of all four of these? It makes a difference….

Reduce stomach bloating the healthy way, without toxic fasts or cleanses.

Fix the true causes of belly bloat to be healthier as well as trimmer.

Causes of Belly Bloat* Gassy foods * Insulin Resistance (excess body fat) * Stress * Infection * Hormones * Poor digestion

Foods Most Likely to Cause Gas and Bloating1. Dairy products – The proteins and sugars in most dairy are difficult to digest. Milk, ice cream, yogurt, cottage cheese and many hard cheeses are common causes of gas and bloating. Butter and ghee are dairy fat and much easier to digest. 2. Complex carbohydrates – Grains such as wheat, corn and oats have a complex structure difficult to break down. We don’t have the correct digestive enzymes to eat these seeds. Fermentable food fragments get left behind in our gut, causing gas, irritated bowel and Leaky Gut. 3. FODMAPS foods – Fodmaps foods are shorter chain sugars found in certain grains, nuts, dairy, fruits and vegetables. If not fully absorbed, these sugar carbs can hold water in the gut, causing belly bloat, loose stool or IBS. Garlic and onions are high in FODMAPS. 4. Raw Veggies – Raw vegetables are harder to digest than cooked. Cauliflower, broccoli, kale and cabbage can be gassy even if cooked, but are better cooked than raw. Steam, bake, grill or wilt veggies for less gas.

Metabolic Syndrome, Insulin Resistance and Belly FatIf you hold extra weight around your middle you may have Metabolic Syndrome, known as pre-diabetes or Insulin Resistance. You can’t flatten your belly if it’s overweight with extra layers of body fat.

Get on the Paleo Diet (my Diet For Human Beings DVD), and your triglycerides and weight may come steadily down.

Supplements for Insulin Resistance can help manage glucose, weight and high blood sugar. I use the combination of Synulin, Zinc and Systemic Formulas P-Pancreas in the clinic along with the Paleo Diet.

See this article and Podcast on “How to Test and Treat Insulin Resistance Weight Gain”.

Keep a Healthy Colon to Reduce Stomach BloatingConstipation is a major cause of bloated stomach and gut. Bowels should move once or twice daily with formed stools that pass easily.

Getting off dairy and grains and add leafy greens and other vegetables. Try 6 cups cooked veggies daily.

For short-term help for constipation while fixing your diet, C-Colon from Systemic Formulas in my online store works great. Don’t use harsh laxatives or purges. They inflame the colon and contribute to IBS.

Stop Candida to Reduce Stomach Bloating1. Yeast overgrows in the gut if you overeat sugars and starchy carbs. This yeast ferments and causes gas. 2. Candida and other gut infections cause poor digestion 3. Women’s yeast infections often mean Candida in the gut as well 4. Eating lower carb with less starchy food helps reduce Candida

There are several anti-fungal support products in the Online Store. Morinda and #4 FungDX are especially good.

Good Probiotics Improve Belly BloatThe good bacteria in our Colon is reduced when we take antibiotics. Candida yeast can take over, as well as pathogenic (bad) bacteria.

Probiotics can be taken daily for life. Yogurt does not usually have enough variety of species, and often makes us gassy and bloated.

Buy at least two Probiotics and alternate them. I rotate 5 different ones, including those here in the Online Store.

PMS Can Cause Belly BloatIs it PMS? Many women have low progesterone at the very time it should be highest. This causes PMS symptoms including bloating and water weight.

This product is helpful when taken for the last 14 days of every cycle. It will help you produce progesterone naturally and reduce estrogen dominance.

Progesterone is the body’s natural diuretic. You don’t need water pills!

To check for low Progesterone, we do a saliva test on Day 21 of your cycle when Progesterone should be at its peak. I prefer Saliva Testing rather than blood as it tests Free Progesterone, not Total Progesterone.

Exercise to Tighten Your Abs and Reduce Stomach Bloat* Planks * Crunches * Squats * Sit-Ups

Keep good posture, using belly muscles to stand, sit and lift. Find a trainer or work-out buddy and get accountable.

Stress Reduction Helps Gut FunctionStress hormones can cause gut pain, bloating and sometimes loose stools.

If I have a stressful incident, I immediately take Passion Flower tincture or other calming herbs to calm the Adrenaline rush.

Irritable Bowel is easily triggered by stress. This article and Primal Diet – Modern Health Podcast detail how to eat if you have IBS. It’s work but it’s worth it!

Help Your Thyroid Burn FatThe thyroid sets the metabolic rate for many body functions – how well you burn fat, how fast your hair grows, how quickly food moves through your system, your heart rate and much more.

If you suspect a thyroid issue, run the correct lab tests (read here). If needed, get a prescription for natural thyroid such as Armour.

Boost your metabolic rate without caffeine or herbal stimulants to help burn body fat and belly bloat.

Check Gallbladder Function for Better Digestion1. Bile from the gallbladder. Bile breaks down fat for digestion 2. Gallbladder symptoms. Light-colored stools. Pain under the right ribs, pain in the neck and right shoulder blade. Nausea from fatty food. 3. Digestive enzymes. Enzymes that include ox bile or lipase help digest fat. 4. Beets for the gallbladder. Eat beets to stimulate bile flow. 5. See Your Doctor. If you have pain, get a sonogram of the liver and gallbladder.

You may or may not have gall stones (see my articles on Vitamin K2 for calcification problems in the body); you may have “lost” your gall bladder; or you may have biliary congestion or slow gall bladder emptying. If you have no gall bladder, take this or something like it with every meal – forever. Beta Plus also helps with sluggish gall bladder function and digestion. This Lb – Liver/Gall Bladder has beets to help clear the gall bladder.

TIP: See your doctor if pain and bloating persist

Are your Olive and Avocado Oils pure? Do you trust labels?

Full post

Are your Olive and Avocado Oils pure?Do you trust labels?

It’s sad but true. Labels often hide the true ingredients.

Real Olive Oil is green and a little bitterMost Americans have never tasted pure Olive Oil. The sharp taste of real Olive Oil is distinctive and changes recipes.

Pour some of your oil into a white or clear bowl and check the color. Is it pale yellow or bright green?

The darker the color, and the more green, the more likely it’s straight olive oil not “cut” with canola or sunflower oil.

Some olives are naturally milder in taste and color, or can be harvested at different times. This can make the oil milder and not as dark.

Many oil vendors “cut” their oil before bottlingMany companies add other cheaper oils to give them more volume and sales.

Why?

  • Avocado and Olive fruits are expensive and fragile
  • Mixing with Canola or Sunflower Oil adds volume
  • Mixed oils are milder in taste, more suitable to American palates

There’s Canola Oil in my Avocado Oil?Yep! There could be….

Genetically modified Canola is often used to dilute poorer-quality Olive and Avocado oils.

Sunflower and Safflower seed oils are used as well.

Is Canola Oil Healthy? All SEED oils such as corn, canola, sunflower and safflower are high in POLYunsaturated fat.

Fruit and Nut oils such as Olive, Avocado and Macadamia are higher in MONOunsaturated fat.

Polyunsaturated fats are much more likely to clog arteries, cause fatty liver, and elevate LDL Cholesterol (the bad kind).

Unfortunately, almost all restaurant, packaged, processed and to-go food is made with polyunsaturated seed oils.

Why?

Because it is cheap, and tasteless.

Do Labels Say What Oils are in the Bottle? Not always, no.

Consumer watchdog and government groups have fought this issue for decades. But compliance and enforcement are minimal.

There is NO guarantee your Avocado or Olive Oil are labelled correctly.

How to Buy Pure Oil* Look for oils grown and sold by single vendors such as estate farms * Foreign Olive Oil is usually pure (Greek, Spanish, Italian) * Choose dark bottles that protect oil from rancidity * Organic, Extra Virgin, Cold Pressed oils are more likely to be pure * Use the taste test! Olive Oil should be slightly bitter, spicy and brightly colored * Price is not always a guarantee but cheap product is suspect * Large national brands often test poorly * Look at the bottled date to make sure your oil is not old

How to Care for Olive and Avocado OilsUnrefined Avocado Oil should not advertise “high smoke point”. 300 – 400 degrees is a good low smoke point on a label.

Keep your bottles tightly closed in a dark place.

Consider refrigerating your oils. I keep my oils refrigerated and take them out of the fridge to soften before use.

Use your oils as seasonings rather than as cooking oils.

Alternatives to Avocado and Olive OilI use more saturated fats than unsaturated fats.

Why? Because humans evolved eating healthy wild animals and seafoods and their saturated fats and organs.

Plus coconut oil – a surprisingly excellent saturated fat.

The unsaturated oil I use to replace Olive and some of my Avocado oils is Tea Seed Oil – NOT Tea Tree Oil.

Only one company is making this, which is sometimes hard to find.

This Podcast and article tell you about this oil. It even has a better nutritional profile than Olive Oil!

GABA Neurotransmitter for Anxiety and Addiction GABA is our main inhibitory (stabilizing) neurotransmitter and a regulator of anxiety and addiction.

It helps us stay calm and avoid sympathetic flight or fight mode. It governs dozens of functions in the mind and body.

Along with Serotonin, GABA provides the brakes in our body (the "slow-slow"), much as Dopamine and Acetyl-Choline provide the "go-go". Like yin and yang, we need both to be balanced.

In our natural state as hunters and gatherers, we only went into alarm mode if a real or potential threat was encountered.

But our nervous systems in modern however perceive much of our day as threat. Deadlines, traffic, money, and worries of all types. We can feel endangered just by missing a phone call or freeway exit.

https://www.ondietandhealth.com/fix-your-childs-stomach-aches/https://www.ondietandhealth.com/fix-your-childs-stomach-aches/Why is it important to fix your child’s stomach aches?

Many parents don’t realize their kids hurt. Children don’t know tummies are not supposed to hurt. They may think it’s normal.

I did not know my gut was not supposed to hurt when growing up. As an adult I was diagnosed with Celiac Disease but decades of malabsorption took their toll on my bones and growth.

I always ask kids and teens in Consults if anything hurts. The question can surprise them, especially if they’re seeing me for “allergies”.

Explaining that pain (or constipation, gas, diarrhea) is not right and we want to fix it helps them understand WHY we’ll be changing their diet.

For other kids, stomach aches become a negotiating factor when they want out of doing something. It can be a problem figuring out real tummy aches from imaginary ones.

Either way, it’s important to address.

How to Buy Healthy Eggs In the grocers, look for eggs labeled PASTURE-RAISED, such as Vital Farms. Pastured hens live outdoors in movable coops.

In a Farmer's Market, ask the seller "what do you feed these chickens?"

Eggs that are colored, speckled or slightly dirty don't mean the birds were pastured. They may have been raised in a fenced dirt area with no access to bugs or forage. Eating GMO corn and soy - not a natural diet for birds.

Pastured chickens' natural diet is bugs, green plants and seeds. When insects and seeds decline in the winter, they need a grain mix in addition to most any food products from the farm.

Chickens are NOT vegetarians.

Are you using the Lysine Arginine ratio for Herpes support? Correctly?

Lysine and Arginine are two of twenty amino acids (proteins). Proteins are building blocks for hundreds of things – muscles, neurotransmitters, blood cells, enzymes and more.

Lysine is one of Eight Essential Amino Acids, meaning we do NOT make Lysine so MUST get it in our diet. The Standard American Diet can be deficient in Lysine because it is grain-based. Is this why 40 to 60% of Americans have HSV infections?

Arginine comes in food, and we can also make it. So it is not one of the eight essential aminos.

GABA is an important neurotransmitter you don’t hear about much.

Learning of my own low GABA symptoms changed my life – I should say saved my life

Is GABA Similar to Serotonin?

GABA is Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid. Along with Serotonin, these neurotransmitters provide the “brakes” to overstimulated nerve impulses. Keeping the brain relaxed but on purpose is their job.

Dopamine, Adrenaline, Acetylcholine, and anxiety are emotional, hormonal and neurological stimulants. They set off a chain reaction of stress, causing interference all over the body.

When our brakes are inadequate to the task, we suffer from imbalanced neurotransmitters and hormones.

One of the diet rules we all “know” is that salt is bad for us. So why is real salt so important? Can it be a key to health recovery?

Salt was one of the earliest trade items and helped establish trade routes and villages all over the world. It was often used as money.

Salt was traditionally used to preserve food. It’s value was in allowing meats and vegetables to be salted and stored for later consumption, a huge advantage over having to hunt and gather fresh food all the time. Neanderthals mined salt, as well as ancient Chinese.

Whew! That's a lot but Judith makes it readable and clear. Highly recommended for science students and the rest of us who think eating less meat helps the environment.

But factory fed meats and feedlots are indeed part of the problem. The wastes of corn and soy fed cattle are collected in huge lagoons, an anaerobic breeding place for methane gases.

Grass fed ruminants (cattle, bison, sheep, deer, giraffe, camels, antelopes) chew their cud. They have split hooves which, when on pasture, mix waste, rain and saliva into the soil, fertilize it and aerate it.

Treat Irritable Bowel Syndrome with food, and go for a lasting resolution.  If you have diarrhea, oily stools, gas or gut pain, my version of the Elimination Diet and Low Fodmaps Diet for IBS is worth a try.

NOTE: THIS WON'T BE EASY BUT THE PAYOFF CAN BE HUGE!

IBS at its simplest is just two things: incomplete digestion and improper absorption of food (they're different). Inflammation of the gut and yeast or bacterial overgrowth are part of IBS. They may have started after antibiotics. Or from a lifetime of grains and sugars...

Elimination diets such as Low FODMAPS, GAPS, Paleo and The Specific Carbohydrate Diet all help but I never found any of them to achieve the permanent improvement you need. My diet combines parts from all four. Try it on whatever digestive or bowel issue you have.  (See below for exceptions).

Can eggs cause Gallbladder Problems? Yes! I have seen many client's digestive and Gallbladder symptoms improve after eliminating eggs.

What Does the Gallbladder Do? The liver makes bile and sends it to the Gallbladder tucked under the liver. It concentrates and stores bile until needed to digest fats in your food.

Gallbladder/Biliary Dysfunction There are ducts in the liver bringing bile to the Gallbladder as well as the duct going from the Gallbladder to the Small Intestine. All of this can become inflamed and congested with bacteria, cholesterol, stones, and other waxy substances ("sludge"). This is often overlooked by patients and doctors who don't monitor the biliary system until a gall bladder attack sets off a crisis. It may be too late to save the Gallbladder if the blockage or number of stones is too great. Doctors often remove the Gallbladder even when the blockage is not that bad, and will say you don't really need your Gallbladder and can eat whatever you want once it's gone.

If possible, take it as a warning, get the facts, and change your diet ASAP. You need that Gallbladder! Removing the Gallbladder may not remove the actual cause of the problem. It may not be the Gallbladder's fault it became congested.

Latin American Paleo Cooking is a terrific new book of authentic Latin foods using Paleo substitutes for flour and sugar. You'll find plantains, cassava flour, potato, coconut flour, tapioca starch and more.

Author Amanda Torres (The Curious Coconut) adapted her Puerto Rican mother-in-law's family recipes to a Paleo-safe diet. Amanda holds a Masters in Neuroscience and used Paleo foods and lifestyle principles to lose 80 pounds and recover from IBS and the auto-immune skin disorder H.S.

Having found Tara Grant's wonderful book on this disorder ("The Hidden Plague") Amanda was inspired to go Keto, heal her Leaky Gut and get her immune system under control. But she missed those Latin foods! (Listen to my podcast with Tara Grant on healing autoimmune disorders with diet awareness here).

"Latin American Paleo Cooking" has 80 recipes without grains or dairy and most are Autoimmune Paleo adapted.

Starchy roots, tubers, and fruits make the dough for the many types of fritters, pancakes and turnovers featured here. There are desserts too but go easy on the starches and sugars... They're high in calories and may not digest well if you have issues with starchy carbs.

Try some of these: Garlic Lime Shredded Chicken; Fried Plantain Sandwich on page 72 (pictured here), Queso Blanco on page 170 - white "cheese" made from Amanda's secret ingredients. It melts and stretches like regular Latin Queso! It's used in 9 recipes.

For dessert, try the Coconut Milk Pudding or the "Rice" Pudding made from Yucca. Chapters include Quick and Easy; Fiesta Foods; Family Dinners; The Essentials, and more.

Ingredients are available in Latin Grocery stores as well as online. Enjoy!

The correct supplements for adrenal fatigue changed my life more than once. First diagnosed with low cortisol after a heat stroke in 1987, I fell to almost complete adrenal failure in 2001 after severe Epstein Barr Virus.

My goal has always been to repair the adrenals, not just take things for fatigue. I never went on the steroids I was told I'd need. I took rebuilding supplements and made changes in my life.

Want more energy? REPAIR the Adrenals and Thyroid. Don't overcome "fatigue" with coffee or other stimulants. Here's some very personal tips and supplements for adrenal fatigue repair.

5 Supplements for Adrenal Fatigue 1. Passion Flower calms body and mind to help you sleep, focus, and overcome anxiety. To repair the adrenals you have to fix the "wired" before you fix the "tired". 2. Licorice makes Cortisol last longer. You want this kind from Amazon, not this one with Glycyrrhizzin removed. That works for reflux and ulcers. Or get Licorice tincture to add to your water during the day (don't take it after 5 PM). 3. Adrenal Cortex is different from Adrenal Glandulars. I sell this one in my online store. It's derived only from the inner Adrenal Cortex and no outer Adrenal Medulla like regular glandulars have. The Medulla makes Epinephrine, so regular glandulars can make you speedy. 4. Systemic Formulas Ga - Adrenal is the #2 product in my clinic and online store (after D3 Complete with K2). This 40 year old product was designed by a master Herbalist. It worked for me in the 80's and still works today. It's ideal at 3 PM - or take as desired. It's not a stimulant but will lift you gently out of fatigue. It works well with Premier Adaptogen, packaged together here. 5. B Vitamins may help. Try a mix of Phosphorylated B's plus MTHF like this one.

5 Tips for Adrenal Fatigue Repair 1. Sleep. Nap. Meditate. You cannot fix fatigue until you stop overwork, worry and lack of sleep. Calming yourself is the best way to have more energy. In addition to the Passion Flower above, add some Systemic Formulas N3 - Relaxa day and/or night. Try both before bed, during the night if you're restless, or take in the daytime to stay calm. 2. Stop Caffeine. Beating up the adrenals will not help them repair! 3. Keep blood sugar stable. The adrenals play a huge role in blood sugar management. Give them a break with more proteins, fats and vegetables and a lot less starchy carbs or sugar. Eat on a schedule. Here's my DVD on "The Diet For Human Beings". 4. Get lab facts! Test both the thyroid and the adrenals to know which (or both) need help. Test - don't guess. This article has tons more about saliva testing. This has some quick tests you can do at home. Here's how to test your thyroid properly, even when your doctor thinks TSH is sufficient. 5. Acknowledge it's your responsibility to take charge of your life. No one else can make your life calmer and happier. Trust me - I worked myself into the Hospital twice before I learned to "Grow Up"!

Prevent adrenal fatigue, heat stroke, and heat exhaustion with real salt to keep you hydrated. Himalayan or Sun-Dried Solar salts are essential to electrolyte balance. (See my Electrolyte Hydration Drink below). Water alone will not hydrate you. In fact....

Too much plain water can flush away your minerals With adrenal fatigue, we tend to excrete salt and be somewhat dehydrated since the cells can't hold water without salt. If you then become overheated, you can experience heat exhaustion or, even worse, heat stroke from the dehydration.

The reverse is true too. If you have had heat exhaustion, it can damage your adrenals and lead to chronic fatigue.

I know this -- it happened to me. Heat never bothered me until I did the 6-Day Course - similar to the old Outward Bound program. Spend a few days conquering your fears by jumping off cliffs with a zip-line, running uphill, and various physical and mental exertions. Crowded bunk cabins had no A/C and bathrooms were far away. Water was not encouraged nor was salt.

The Adirondacks were in a heat wave that summer but there was no reduction in activities. I got severely dehydrated, overheated from exercise and hot cabins, and stopped sweating. I began to hallucinate and had to leave the Course.

Over the next 2 weeks, my Adrenals crashed. I lost 13 pounds of muscle which I never got back. (Cortisol is strongly connected with muscle function). I have struggled with low Cortisol and chronic fatigue ever since. I still can't sweat and must restrict many outdoor activities.

My Electrolyte ReHydration Drink Fill a bottle 2/3 rd's full of Spring or Mineral water, or reverse-osmosis water (NO alkalized water). Top with 100% Organic Juice.

Add 3 large pinches of Himalayan Salt, about a tsp., or some Salt Sole.

Shake and drink after sweating.

Symptoms of Heat Exhaustion and Heat Stroke * A change in sweating is a key symptom. If you are hot and stop sweating you are headed for heat stroke * You feel overheated or disoriented * Flushed red skin * Throbbing head or nausea * Your temperature elevates as high as 105

Heat Exhaustion can wipe you out for weeks. Heat Stroke can kill you.

What to do if you suspect Heat Stroke 1. Quickly get body temperature down. Find shade and drench with water, or get into water. 2. Drink water slowly, with 2 tsps. added salt and some kind of sugar such as fruit juice or actual sugar (see below). 3. Call 911 for an IV saline solution and cooling body packs. 4. Find a fan!

Who is susceptible to Adrenal Fatigue and Heat Stroke? Everyone! Playing sports, hiking, gardening, sitting in saunas or by the pool can all cause critical overheating. The elderly, ill and those on diuretics are less able to handle heat.

Swimming is a common cause of dehydration. Hot sun, active play... You're sweating even though you don't realize it.

Preventing Heat Exhaustion and Adrenal Fatigue The adrenals regulate sodium, potassium , calcium and magnesium - the 4 key electrolytes. If you're overheated, the adrenals burn out trying to keep sodium and potassium in balance. Supporting your adrenals now can prevent heat exhaustion. I have many articles on the adrenals and adrenal support products in my online store such as this one and this one. Test and treat your adrenals!

A craving for salt is a common symptom of low adrenal function. I use fine ground Himalayan Salt like this one generously on my food and add it to my water in the Texas summer - maybe 1/4 tsp. several times a day. Or make a salt sole (So-Lay) - the briny liquid mixes quickly in water.

Avoid commercial white salt. It is highly processed and contains additives that make it hard to absorb. Choose Himalayan or Sun-Dried Sea Salt. And stay cool!

Choosing safer sunscreen? Avoid synthetic chemicals that absorb through the skin, get correct protection, and soak up some Vitamin D while you're at it. Here's how, including numerous links at the bottom of the page...

Five types of sunscreens 1). Organic Filters: synthetic chemical combos that absorb sun's radiation, preventing it from entering the skin. Here's a case where the word "organic" is bad.

2). Traditional Mineral Sunscreens reflect damaging rays. Most include zinc oxide or titanium oxide. They appear white on the skin since they reflect light.

3). Nano-Mineral sunscreens have tiny nano-particles of zinc and titanium oxide. Their safety is questioned as they may penetrate the skin, but they're still safer than organic filters.

4). Clothes and shade work well!

5). Healthy skin burns less. The Paleo Diet may change your tanning future.

Sunscreen ingredients to avoid * Oxybenzone is common in commercial sunscreens. Linked to elevated estrogen, endometriosis and allergic reactions. * Retinyl Palmitate is a form of Vitamin A linked to skin tumors and lesions. It doesn't "help" sunscreen protection. Avoid it. * Spray sunscreen is too easy to inhale. Use topicals. * High SPF's only protect against UVB burning rays. They don't block UVA rays that age the skin, affect your immune system and promote skin cancer. You're not safe just because you aren't burning. * Parabens and PABA * Sunscreen/bug repellant combos - too many unpronounceable ingredients!

Are Mineral Sunscreens Safer? In general, yes. But commercial brands of zinc and titanium sunscreens may still contain chemicals in the lotion. If you can't pronounce it, don't use it.

Many brands now use BOTH chemical and mineral filters. Read those labels or use the EWG sunscreen guide below.

Taping your mouth at night improves the microbiome of the mouth and gut, increases energy, improves sleep, snoring, and allergies, and calms anxiety. I've been mouth taping at night for 15 years!

This Primal Diet - Modern Health podcast gives details on how and why to tape and other ideas to reduce snoring and allergies. The info is here in this blog post as well.

Key Concept: The mouth is for eating. The nose is for breathing. Taping your mouth at night is the natural and correct way your body wants to breathe

When we snore or breathe through the mouth we deplete carbon dioxide - an essential blood gas that needs to be in balance with oxygen. Slowing the breath and breathing through the nose help increase carbon dioxide and can improve whole body chemistry.

Topics I cover on this Podcast: 1. Why you get deeper sleep and less snoring 2. How taping your mouth can improve asthma and allergies 3. Improving dental health and breath 4. Achieving a calmer mind 5. The benefits of Nitric Oxide and Carbon Dioxide 6. How to tape

Links to things I mention: * Treat your allergies with Quercitin or D-Hist, and homeopathic Histaminum. Handle the allergens in your environment too, such as the cat that sleeps on your pillow. More on allergies here. * If you have a chronic sinus infection Nutribiotic Nasal Spray may help. * Here’s a podcast I did with the world’s top trainer of Buteyko Breathing. It’s really helpful to learn more about how breathing affects your life! Especially if you snore or have asthma... * 3M Micropore tape on Amazon

J. Stanton is one of those really intelligent people who gets his mind into everything. He's a writer and researcher, and his book "The Gnoll Credo" is a beautiful fantasy tale combining Stanton's interests in archaeology, anthropology and what constitutes "truth and beauty".

Stanton was a speaker at the 2012 Ancestral Health Symposium at Harvard, speaking on the topic of HUNGER. I was struck by some of his data and conclusions (both agreeing and disagreeing), and here's our interview to tell you more. HINT: Humans are predators. In fact, we're the top predator alive since T.Rex roamed. Predators think, eat, and act differently than prey. We hunt, eat and rest. Prey grazes constantly as a way to keep alert and energized, ready to run when needed. Our digestive and nervous systems are completely different.

Obesity and hunger have a complex relationship. Bingeing on cookies, eating cake even though you know it will make your gluten-free body hurt, and having most any processed food fools our satiety/satisfaction centers in the short run. In the long run, the nutrient deficiencies caused by eating processed starches makes us overeat, attempting to find that FAT or CALCIUM or B12 that our body needs right now! We are driven by hunger, and the more overweight you are, or real-food deprived you are, the more you crave. But isn't it easier when hungry to grab a bag or box of something rather than shop for, cook and eat that prime rib which is what you really want! Yes! We'll take the easy way out and pretend that our desire for fatty red meat isn't true or correct.

Personally, I think advertising has a lot to do with this brainwashing effect, as well as the synthetic chemicals put in food to fool our taste buds. I talk to Stanton about this here as it was not discussed at Harvard. Haven't we all had that experience of thinking "Wow, this is the BEST thing I ever put in my mouth", as we stare at a mournful pile of franchised factory "food"? Darn, those food engineers really did a good job on these....

As predators, what we really want and what satisfies us and allows us to just STOP eating, is the protein and fat we hunted for millions of years. You know how it is when you eat a really solid breakfast with plenty of meats, fats, eggs and veggies, and you are fueled for hours! Unlike juice and cereal which sends you into an adrenaline rush when your blood sugar crashes a little while later. What does adrenaline feel like? Irritable, anxious, moody, and just plain unsatisfied! In fact, its part of the flight-or-fight response, as in "I need food now because I'm in some sort of big trouble".

Nutrient Dense food that turns off the Hunger Center in our brain.... that's the ticket and is why Paleo/Primal/Ancestral diets such as my Diet For Human Beings are so satistying with so little food. There's lots more to listen to in this show, so tune in to an interesting discussion on What Is Hunger, and Why Are We Hungry.

Check out some of Stanton's blogs on everything from Dental Plaque, to Footwear, to, well, you name it, and he talks about it. He's at gnolls.org. You're going to learn something new, and that's a promise I can keep!
