This is a guided meditation that goes along with last week’s podcast episode of Getting to Know the Mind. The practice here is to simply observe what is happening in the mind. What is arising and passing? How does it feel? We focus on the experience in the mind with the sole intention to observe, not to interfere or change anything.

This week’s talk builds on some talks in previous weeks (Papañca and Creating Conditions for Wisdom to Arise). The focus here is on getting to know the mind in its natural state.
When we are constantly intervening in meditation, we don’t get to see how the mind behaves naturally. In this talk, I cover the benefits of getting to know the mind, what gets in the way, and how we can work toward practicing in a way that supports insight.

Today’s meditation is a 30 minute vipassana practice. We’ll use the practice of noting to bring awareness to whatever is arising in our experience. The meditation starts with a few minutes of awareness of breathing, and we then open our awareness to the entirety of our experience.
Keeping the breath as the anchor, we sit in observation of whatever is arising and passing. This noting practice is inspired by the Mahasi Sayadaw method. It’s a bit gentler and less structured, but offers a helpful way to anchor in the breath while remaining open to other feelings, sounds, thoughts, etc.

Today’s episode is the first in a series of Mindfulness in Daily Life. As laypeople, we spend most of our days interacting with the world. Although meditation is a useful tool, we can also benefit from bringing our mindfulness practice off the cushion and into everyday life.
This first episode covers the simple idea of slowing down. The simple act of slowing down can make a significant difference in our ability to be mindful and present during the day. We’ll talk about why slowing down is important, why we rush through our days, and a few techniques you can use to be more mindful and deliberate with your actions.
