You can't have good business in a rotten society — and when your company is unethical, your employees feel it. Ethics is like a muscle: ignore it, and it atrophies.

I'm thrilled to welcome Dr. Bettina Palazzo to discuss the real cost of business ethics (or the lack thereof). Fun fact: This marks a Fraudish first—I've now had both halves of a power couple on the show! Bettina met her husband, previous guest Dr. Guido Palazzo, at an ethics conference. Talk about finding your person in unexpected places, proof that you should definitely attend more events.

Bettina and I dive deep into the shifting landscape of corporate compliance and how leadership sets the tone for everything that happens in your organization. We explore why younger generations are fundamentally changing workplace expectations and refusing to settle for "that's just how business works" mentality.

Bettina brings fresh perspectives on making ethics practical, not preachy, so if you're tired of compliance being treated like a box-ticking exercise rather than a competitive advantage, this episode is for you.

Fraudish fans, we made it to 200 episodes! To celebrate, I'm diving into the ultimate fraud – death fraud – with death investigator Dean Beers. And yes, "death investigator" is absolutely as fascinating a job as it sounds!

From "Oops, they're not actually dead" insurance scams to cases where the evidence tells a completely different story than the witnesses, Dean's seen it all. The best part? He breaks down how evidence-based impartiality is the secret sauce to cracking these cases wide open.

This episode with Prof. Guido Palazzo blew my mind about how normal people turn into corporate criminals. Turns out it's less about bad apples and more about toxic orchards! We dish about all your favorite corporate disasters: Theranos, Wells Fargo, and France Telecom. Guido explains how fear and impossible targets are basically Fraud Fertilizer™.

My favorite part? Learning that having a career "Plan B" is your best defense against being pressured into sketchy accounting, and that reading novels builds more ethical muscles than those cheesy HR training videos. Buckle up, Fraudish! Jeff Grant gives "career pivot" a whole new meaning in this episode: from lawyer to opioid addict to federal inmate to ordained minister to practicing attorney again. Talk about a LinkedIn profile that raises eyebrows!

Jeff and his wife Lynn created the White Collar Support Group (therapy for people who've traded corner offices for prison cells) and now he's fighting for a Federal Expungement Initiative. As someone who investigates fraud for a living, I was fascinated by the "after the handcuffs" perspective we don’t discuss too often.

A crossover episode with Alex Solorzano, host of Lurking in the Fog, a podcast about crime! I love her description of the podcast: The podcast in which we dive deep into the crimes and evils that inhabits the world we live in. Our goal is to showcase how crime affects businesses day-to-day operations. From something as simple as accidentally setting up a factory in the wrong neighborhood and having to deal with criminal groups, to ensuring the safety of employees and cargo to governments using state-actors to pressure, attack, and harm companies in order to get their desired bribe or kickback.

Why Lurking in the Fog? Simple: at its very essence, Crime operates in disguise. Rarely will it show its true colors in plain eyesight. Crime thrives in the grey. In situations where confusion and chaos are the norm, crime is king. As such, it Lurks in the Fog.

As Michaels says, the best leaders and the best interrogators capitalize on the same two core skills: vision and influence. It was only a co-worker’s suspicions that brought the fraud to an end. After being caught, he pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 97 months in federal prison. He was released in September of 2014.

Audit Analytics Great Dude

Trent Russell’s tagline  “We Improve Your Audit Analytics | Host of The Audit Podcast | 2021 Internal Audit Beacon award recipient”

What's your favorite auditor joke? Did you hear the one about the interesting auditor? No? Me either.

It's that perception that drives me nuts and part of why I do what I do. Every auditor is a consultant, it's just that we also have to do the assurance work that doesn't come with a lot of glamour. But, we can also do the consulting work. We can use analytics, automation, and dashboards to actually change the perception of internal audit as a cost center.

Our GWIF guest today, Cheryl Hyder, always makes me smile when she calls me Pink. And it’s funny because she is wearing pink today. We talk all things fraud, pittie rescue, internal bias, neuroscience and lots more.

I am excited to have Dan Ramey as a Great Dude in Fraud today. This episode includes everything from how women and men differ in embezzlement aka pink collar crime, how Dan is constantly adding to his arsenal of fraud knowledge, think crypto, and so much more. Dan is a big podcast listener and we compare notes on various podcasts.
Dan Ramey Forensic Accountant; Expert Witness; Conference Speaker; Forensic Accounting & ERM Professor and all things fraud. Dan is a mentor and more importantly a friend to me. His wealth of experience and knowledge make him a thought leader in the fraud world. We talk about creativity and embezzlement, crypto and fraud, podcasts, Enron, Rita Crundwell, Collin Street Bakery. This is another great Great Women in Fraud podcast with a leader in the field.

This past week I took some time to enjoy the holidays but I was able to listen to a lot of podcasts while traveling. Number one crazy was Swindled Episode 74, The OB-GYN. You must listen. Truly. It made me so angry at how this went on for so long. Women’s health and profiting from it. Wow. I never could have imagined. I’m also continuing to listen to Bad Blood the Final Frontier. The Elizabeth Holmes trial is getting to the home stretch. I really have no idea how it will go. A friend posted a Washington Post opinion piece, Women can be evil too. With Ghislaine Maxwell’s trial and Elizabeth Holmes ongoing it seems that women are getting some ink so to speak. It starts out: Two villainesses have captured the nation’s attention from the courtroom this week. Or is that two victims? An interesting read for sure. Let’s get started with Dan’s interview.

This is going to be a short week for a lot of people and you might be traveling. What a perfect time to get caught up on podcasts! We have Craig Stanland, A Great Dude in Fraud, for our guests. You know I like to interview people who have been on the other side so to speak. I am picky however and really want to hear the personal side of their experiences. Craig does a wonderful job of his personal experience and has written about it in his book, Blank Canvas. Link in the show notes. The book is so incredibly personal. We were connected by Jeff Grant who you have listened to in episode 39. This past week I took a much-needed break and got to read and listen to podcasts at a beautiful beach. A new podcast I am listening to is The Criminology Academy. Sally Simpson was a guest on episode 32. I hope to have her on this podcast. Such interesting work and she used to live in Oregon! Also, episode 30 with Wim Huisman was fantastic. The ACFE Nashville chapter made my day by including Great Women in Fraud as one of their Top 5 podcasts. What an honor. Stay tuned to Bad Blood the Final Frontier because Elizabeth Holmes is testifying this week. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving. Let’s get started.

Mariel Klosterman is a student at Dakota State University. She is a Cybersecurity Researcher | Speaker | Information Security up and comer. She recently won the Open Source Rising Star at OSMOSIS 2021. Learn about her career and the dos and don’ts of sock puppets.

Sock Puppets? Thinking Muppets. Nope. Today we have the pleasure of a rising star in the field of OSINT. Mariel Klosterman. She just received the Open Source Rising Star of the Year at OSMOSIS 2021. That is such an honor. I truly wish I had been so focused when I was her age. She is a pleasure to have as a guest. You will learn a lot not only about her but also the do’s and don’ts of sock puppets. I definitely got some tips.

This week I listened to Adam Grant interview Indra Nooyi, the former CEO of Pepsi. Initially, I was not interested in her book because I saw tweets about her saying Ex Pepsi CEO Indra Nooyi claims she's "never, ever, ever" asked for a pay rise and finds the idea 'cringeworthy'. I found that to be tone-deaf. But when I dug further and listened to her talk with Adam Grant I completely changed my mind. Not about the raise but about her. She is incredibly well-spoken, thoughtful, and is continuing to learn. She is very interested in data analytics. I have linked to the interview in the show notes. Her life story and career path is just so interesting.

Another great woman in Fraud today is Cristina Revelo. We “met” through Jay Rosen. What a small world we live in. I love Cristina’s story because she has done so much in her career already but she is not afraid to try new things. What is a monitorship, you ask? I like to call it time out for corporations. Listen to a much better definition of it from Cristina. The thing is that monitorships will be increasing. That just came out of the White Collar Crime Conference in Miami in October. I have included the link in the shownotes. From Deputy Attorney General Lisa Monaco: Of course, the decision to use monitors must also include consideration of how the monitorship is administered and the standards by which monitors are expected to do their work. And the selection of monitors will continue to be accomplished in a fashion that eliminates even the perception of favoritism. The department will study how we select corporate monitors, including whether to standardize our selection process across the divisions and offices.”

As to what I listened to last week it was a lot but one podcast really stood out to me. Hidden Brain Work 2.0 The Obstacles You Don’t See. Organizational Psychologist Loran Nordgren was a guest. When the last time you bought a new sofa did it take you longer to buy it because you didn’t know what or how you were going to get rid of your old sofa. This is a real problem. The story of Beach House was fascinating. Fuel and Friction got me thinking about why so many victims don’t go to law enforcement. We need to remove the friction for our clients. Take a listen. And I ordered Nordgren’s new book, The Human Element: Overcoming the Resistance That Awaits New Ideas. Podcasts cost me money. So many books to read after listening to guests. Let’s get listening to Cristina.

This episode is about what Kelly is currently listening to. It is a mix-up of crime, tech, current events, compliance, ethics, and behavioral science. Podcasts add so much to my work life and my personal life. Podcasts take you to a place we normally couldn’t go to regularly. Listening to bigwigs, career advice, branding advice, sales advice. Whatever you want or need I bet you can find it on a podcast. So this episode gives you an idea of which podcasts I regularly listen to. I would love to hear which podcasts you listen to and why.

Welcome back after a wonderful holiday weekend!  Today we have a Great Dude in Fraud.  Jeff Grant is a true story of an unexpected life.  From being a lawyer to going to prison for SBA fraud related to 9/11 and now getting back his law license.

I think you will find this episode fascinating on many levels.  Jeff’s podcast, White Collar Week, and his support group has become such a community for people that never thought this could happen to them.

Please take a listen and let me know your thoughts.  As Jeff says,” It’s the isolation that destroys us. The solution is in community.” Spot on.

Have a great week.

#PodcastTuesday Martina Dove

Have you been a victim of a scam?  Did it change your career trajectory?  In today’s GWIF episode I talk with Dr. Martina Dove about her start in the fraud world. Being a victim of a fraud shaped her and her career.  Her book, The Psychology of Fraud, Persuasion and Scam Techniques, is a must-read. If you know anyone who you think may fall victim to a fraud it is mandatory. Martina does checklists and provides examples from real scams.

It is a fascinating read.

I love how she has been able to use her “softer” human skills to integrate with cyber and scams. And at the core of fraud are humans. As Joe Wells said, “Fraud is not an accounting problem. It is a social problem.” Robots don’t do fraud. Humans commit fraud. Take a listen and let me know your thoughts. Have a wonderful week.

Today's episode is a short one with me reading the foreword to my new book, Embezzlement How to Prevent, Detect and Investigate Pink-Collar Crime. The next few weeks and months will have a mixture of readings from the book and interviews like the first 18 episodes.  Eventually, I will be able to tell you why the podcast is changing a bit.  But for now I hope you take a listen.  It's a bit of my backstory of how I am where I am.

Chelsea Binns is another fantastic guest for Great Women in Fraud.  We have been in the same circles for many years but finally got to catch up and actually talk to each other.  Her story of how she became an investigator and then became a professor is inspiring.  Her dedication to her career is wonderful.  She didn't take the fork in the road.  She took both forks!  I think you are going to love this and maybe even be inspired for more education.
We talk books, favorite crimes shows and lots more.

Today's guest is in my own backyard but we had to be COVID safe so we couldn't do this episode in person.  Melissa Goddard is another Great Women in Fraud and she specializes in construction fraud. With a booming construction economy in Bend, Oregon she is keeping busy. We talked about the nice lady who baked cookies everyday but rationalization got the best of her. We also talked about how much heartbreak happens when an embezzlement happens.  Next time I hope we can record in person.

Tom Hughes closed the 2019 ACFE Global Conference. “The first dollar, because you have a genuine financial emergency … that first dollar, you’re going to agonize about that money,” said Hughes. “You’re going to go to work the next day and you’re expecting the police to be there, probably with a television crew, because you have done this awful thing. But the next morning, you go to work, and nobody’s there. And you say, ‘I’ll never do this again.’ But stealing is going to turn you into a thief.”

I was there and heard his story first hand. As Tom said in this episode he's not famous because he didn't steal enough. That is the thing about pink-collar crime. Petty amounts stolen by low to medium level employees (he was an outside bookkeeper), primarily women, from the workplace. Tom is a regular guy. He wasn't on the front page of the Wall Street or New York Times. But that is what makes his story so interesting and relatable.

Today’s episode with Matt Christensen is extra special for many reasons.  Matt is a big supporter for all things #pinkcollar crime and #greatwomeninfraud.  He is the first Great Man in Fraud for our series.

Matt is a leader in all things anti-fraud and cybersecurity and mentorship.  I consider myself extremely lucky to consider him a colleague.  Please take a listen and definitely reach out to Matt.  He is the real deal.  If you weren’t able to attend CyberCraft Summit there is still time to get the videos.  Matt and Lindsey Ivie did an amazing job connecting all people anti-fraud.  Hear about manels. Spoiler alert CyberCraft Summit was not a manel.

Let’s finish off the year with a real superstar.  Here’s to 2021.

Mary Breslin knows how to throw a party.  I was very lucky to have been invited to her party at the Global ACFE in 2019.  When we are back in person you need to get the invite for ACFE Global.  What I love about this episode is that everything that Mary brings up is relevant, timely and actionable.  You will never look at a Lamborghini again the same way.  Or as the fraudsters say a Lambo.  "Internal auditors are my people" is just one of the takeaways.  We talk about accounting, COVID, full employment for fraud professionals and so much more.

Today’s episode is a bit different with Mel Stanley and your personal brand.  I heard Mel on Great Women in Compliance and was immediately drawn to her and her message. What does personal branding have to do with Great Women in Fraud?  A lot.  You are your brand. What does your brand say.  Even before you walk into a meeting people have a perception of you. Fraud professionals often bring bad news from their investigations.  That can lead to a lot of misconceptions about you and your brand.  I had a personal experience with a boss about my brand.  It was completely wrong. Partially my own fault but needless to say I learned from it.

We talk Dorie Clark, your likeability factor, and how Mel took a big risk but like me I think she is doing her best work ever.  Please take a listen.  You are going to get some great tips and information.

Nicole Landau is a CFE that specializes in construction fraud.  I was lucky enough to meet her in person pre-COVID thanks to Dan Ramey.  Nicole got into fraud investigations by seeing her boss get their CFE. She thought it looked interesting and so she also did it.  Next thing she knew she was on her way to Texas for her first investigation.  The fraud bug stuck and it changed her career trajectory.  If you are in audit and looking for someone who has made it to fraud investigations, Nicole has done it.

She is a winner of the ACFE Ritchie Jennings Scholarship.

Sina is the Alumni Relations Director for the HBSA Bauer.  She also is the President of the ACFE University of Houston Student Chapter.

Welcome to Great Women in Fraud.  It's here and it's the place for all things fraud.  Great Women in Fraud, #GWIF, is the podcast for anyone interested in improving their knowledge of fraud resources, listening to thought leaders, and hearing how to get started in a fraud career.   This episode is all about Kelly's origin story.  It's not a typical path to a career in fraud investigations.
