We love social skill building and character development, and we created this podcast so we could talk about it all the time! Whether your a parent or clinician, we know that you'll get a lot out of listening because we give quick tips with examples of how to handle social skill challenges, emotion regulation, and build character along the way. Autistic people and ADHD-ers don't like the use of person-first language, so why are we still using it? Should we be accommodating people with all kinds of neurodiverse backgrounds or should they shift to "typical" society? Phew. It's a lot to take in. Let's explore!

We are talking again about some of the mental health trends we've been seeing lately and some great ideas for increasing mental health outlets in our kids and teens!

We reference this excellent article about increasing mental health systems in schools: Ojio, Y, Mori, R, Matsumoto, K, et al. Innovative approach to adolescent mental health in Japan: School‐based education about mental health literacy. Early Intervention in Psychiatry. 2021; 15: 174– 182.

This week Kate is exploring social skills both online and offline, and how they affect our tweens and teens self-worth. Have you ever felt personally victimized by comments on social media platforms, or even in person? This is something that our teens experience every day. We are exploring the findings from this article: Resnik, F., & Bellmore, A. (2019). Connecting online and offline social skills to adolescents’ peer victimization and psychological adjustment. It is no surprise that virtual learning has been hard. But also, what has it shown us about the education system? How can we ask questions about what we DO WANT in an education system? This week we are talking about tween and teen identity - and how it is impacted by the public world of social media. Recent literature (Duffy, 2019) has shown us that there are 3 big takeaways from examining tween and teen identity in the social media world: 1) Social media is an exercise in self-presentation, 2) The challenge teens face is to negotiate individual privacy alongside the demands for information made by the logics of social media, ‘trying to be in public without always being public’, 3) , social media is a platform for experimenting in social identity.

What would it be like if your kids actually followed technology boundaries without putting up a fight? The good news is, all of this is possible and it doesn't HAVE to be a fight.
