Success in any endeavor usually begins with planning and preparation. You can get lucky once in awhile and have something turn out beautifully by winging it. That tends to be the exception, of course, and not the rule. What I know for sure is that when I take the time to map things out – to give myself adequate time to plan and prepare, the process is much more enjoyable and the end result feels more grounded and of higher quality. If you’re a procrastinator, consider making the adjustments highlighted in this episode.

It’s mid-January, and I’m guessing you’re right back into the swing of things at work and at home. Before we get to the end of January, I encourage you to build white space into your year so that you can be intentional about reconnecting with yourself over and over again in ways that support what you’d like to accomplish or realize this year. There’s so much noise in the world. There’s a lot of noise in our homes and workplaces, too. Whether it’s your smart phone or the television or music or whatever else clutters your mind. When you want to reconnect with yourself, it’s helpful to have space that’s just for you, away from all the noise. It feels good to give your nervous system a break, to not have to engage or respond to anyone or anything. To be able to watch your thoughts float by or to journal to help you make sense of it all. Take care of you and you’ll be better able to take care of others. For access to the core values exercise mentioned in this episode, click here ~ https://upbeat-artisan-1055.ck.page/

It is my belief that millions more women and girls coming into their power will bring about a kinder, gentler, more compassionate and just world where all people have the opportunity to reach their potential. That is the purpose of the work I do; that is the purpose of this podcast. To encourage and support women in listening to their wisdom and owning their power. If you have the same belief, let’s do this work together. The work of building self-confidence, of taking risks, of being vulnerable, of reaching out and connecting with and supporting other women. The good work, the important work of owning our individual and our collective power.

Whether you feel that everything is going smoothly in your life or not, there comes a point when it’s clear that you want something to be different. The question is what exactly is it that you want to be different? Most of the time, it isn’t going to happen overnight. Getting there requires thought, planning, a series of steps, and probably help from others. In this episode, I share an example of one thing I wanted to be different and the steps I took and continue to take on that journey. When you reflect back 6 months or a year from now, what will be different in your life because you were intentional today about taking action to move in that direction?

As we get closer to the holidays, you might be thinking about things you’re grateful for, the people in your life, the experiences you’ve had, whatever brings you joy, even the things that are difficult but have helped you grow. I have this lovely room in our home where I meditate and practice yoga. The walls are painted a soft lavender, and a beautiful bamboo plant makes it feel like nature has come indoors. There are two windows with no window dressings, so the light of the moon and sun offer natural light and another connection to nature. A mandala floor covering that sits atop the carpeting is the first thing I see when I enter this sacred space. This is a great time of year to set up your own sacred space, where you can be and not do. Where you can slow down and reflect and take a deep breath. In this episode, I talk about the benefits of having your own sacred space and ask you to consider what yours might look like ~ what helps you to feel grounded? ~ what's peaceful and healing? ~ what needs to be in your sacred space for it to feel like home to you?

There’s a delightful exuberance and a grounded feeling that comes through in this conversation with Julie Grossman. Julie is a native of Manitowoc County, Wisconsin who moved to the west coast and lived there for 20 years before returning to her hometown. We talk about a career path that she didn’t expect, what she learned and the ways she grew over the course of those 20 years that continues to serve her personally and in her role as CEO of the Manitowoc-Two Rivers YMCA.

There were many ways the YMCA adjusted to meet the needs of the community during the height of the pandemic. Julie shares how they were able step up in ways big and small in order to be there for kids and families during what was a stressful and scary time for our communities, our country, and the world.

We concluded with Julie sharing what she’d like to accomplish over the next part of her career, where she’s a work in progress, and what she’s looking forward to in 2022.

Every now and then, throughout my life, I’ve had the experience of sharing something with a friend or acquaintance and asking them to keep it to themselves, but instead they've shared it with someone else. You’ve been there, haven’t you? Hopefully, we all learn over time who can be trusted and who can’t. It’s not to say you shouldn’t be friends with someone who can’t keep things to themselves, but it’s probably a good idea to not give them information that you want kept in confidence. Are you someone who keeps things in the vault or are you someone who broadcasts? In this episode, you'll hear my take on why it matters.

The magic is in taking the time to stop, breathe, and surrender, if only for a moment.

I was recently talking with a friend about projects we’re each working on, mostly around writing weekly content or updating content we wrote years ago. There's something very cool that we both realized in updating old content. It's a similar kind of realization as when you look at old photos of yourself. In this episode, we talk about how the past offers a perspective you might not expect. Sometimes, it shows up without necessarily being invited and opens your eyes. You get a glimpse of wisdom that can change how you see yourself and help you focus on what's really important.

When you’re feeling stuck, how do you get yourself unstuck? For me, it’s about taking some kind of action. That may seem obvious, but it isn’t always easy to do.

Consider setting aside 5 or 10 minutes today or tomorrow to zero in on an area where you’re stuck and ponder the questions I suggest in this episode.

When you do take action, even if it’s a baby step, you’re creating momentum.

What step will you take today to shake off that stuck feeling and move toward what you want to accomplish?

There’s a feeling of change in the air; we’re starting a new month, kids are going to school and we’re just a few weeks away from the official end of summer and the beginning of fall.

Another significant change that’s become evident in my coaching with women, especially during the past six months, is a shifting of priorities and how women want to approach their work.

In this episode, we talk about getting clear with yourself about what you need so you can be your own best advocate. How do you want to better align with your values in a way that serves you, that serves the business, and that helps you to feel fulfilled in your life and in your work?

If you’re a manager, there are ideas for you in this episode, too!

Adventurous is the first word that comes to mind when I think of Juliet Kosarzycki. Mastery is another. Inspiring yet another. I’m curious to see if you walk away with the same feeling after listening to this episode.

Juliet has visited 49 countries and will be visiting her 50th this year!

When considering a new quest or new approach, her mantra is “I’m somebody who…(fill in the blank)"…can and will practice for and run a marathon, enjoys trying new foods in different countries, looks forward to climbing to the peak of a mountain.

She believes that the Universe brings to her what she’s asking for and is, therefore, thoughtful about her requests.

And SO much more.

In this episode, you’ll hear Juliet’s positive and uplifting energy. Through her way of being in the world, she unintentionally, or maybe intentionally, challenges others to shake life up a little, try new things, explore, discover, and enjoy more adventures.

What feelings come up when you think about being silent with yourself and creating space for silence in conversation? We have a tendency to fill our days with activities and to multi-task because ...there just aren’t enough hours to get everything done... leaving little to no time to be still, to be with ourselves, with our thoughts and with our emotions. We also have a tendency to fill the silence in conversation with others.

In this episode, we explore a different approach as well as what happens when you give yourself the opportunity to get comfortable with silence and with not having the answers. There is a wonderful sense of freedom and insight within that stillness.

A couple of weeks ago, when I was grocery shopping, I noticed that I had this rushed feeling like I needed to get done with what I was doing so I could get on to the next thing. Only there wasn’t a next thing; I was simply going home and putting the groceries away. I noticed that same thing while taking a shower and getting ready afterward, and while making and eating breakfast, that rushed feeling.

It was a reminder that I want to be fully present in my life and that means being intentional about slowing down. How about for you? What’s your indication that it’s time to slow down so you can be more present in your life? What are the things that start happening?

In this episode, I share some things to consider when you can sense that it's time to take a step back so you can just be.

When someone is retiring or moving on to another job, we write notes and cards, maybe send flowers or take someone out to lunch. We compliment their work or how their kindness made a difference. Perhaps let them know we’ll miss them, and hope that we’ll stay in touch. What if we made the same effort before someone is on their way out? What if we made it a practice to share with others what we respect and appreciate about them?

Your sincere words of appreciation will make a difference. You might even create a domino effect, where the person you compliment is inspired to do the same for someone else. Put a little kindness and gratitude out there in the Universe on a regular basis. You’ll make someone’s day and, in the process, be part of making the world a better place.

After more than a year of working from home through the pandemic, engaging in work is never far away. It’s right there on your laptop or your phone. It’s blended into your home life. We’re talking about advice. It’s one of those things we like to give, but don’t always like to receive. It’s so tempting to give advice, but in the end, it feels better to put that desire aside, to be fully present, to listen, and to walk alongside someone ~ rather than lead ~ as they find their own answers.

Most often, the best way for you to help is to start with the knowledge that you don’t need to have the answers and to be genuinely curious and ask open-ended questions that can help the other person get clarity.

We celebrate Mother’s Day on the second Sunday in May every year. Three women are credited for bringing Mother’s Day to life: Ann Reeves Jarvis, Julia Ward Howe, and Anna M. Jarvis. For them, Mother’s Day was about better health, peace, love, and improving the lives of others. It wasn’t about gifts.

As a result of their efforts from the mid-1800s to the early 1900s, President Woodrow Wilson signed a bill in 1914 designating the second Sunday in May as “Mother’s Day”, a day to celebrate all mothers.

Some of the details of their journeys are shared in this podcast. Links to resources below:

Simplify. When the spaces where you live and work are cluttered, especially with things you don’t use, it can feel stressful and chaotic and it can be hard to focus on what’s important. All the stuff hanging around that you don’t need or use can also make you feel less satisfied with your life. There are things you want to do, things you want to accomplish, and you also want to rest and relax. Sometimes the stuff can get in the way of doing just that. When your space is simplified and organized, it feels light and open and free. It feels like possibility and opportunity. And what a perfect time of year to feel that way.

In this episode, we’re talking about getting comfortable asking for help.

For many of us, it’s not easy to ask for help. How can we make our way through that discomfort and start asking for the help we want and need? None of us can do this thing called life alone. We’re human, therefore need each other. That interdependence makes us all better and helps us feel more connected. And don’t we need more of that these days.

In this episode, we’re talking about quieting the voice of judgment; what we think and say about ourselves and about others. Just because you decide something is true doesn’t mean that it is. Let's commit to checking our judgments, asking questions, getting clarification and being intentional about the kind of energy we want to put into the world.

In this episode, we’re talking about taking up space as women. I share a story about walking on a trail and trying to cross the street safely that feels like a metaphor for life at times. It's about the types of experiences most women I know have had at some point in their lives. Beginning with taking up a little sliver of space, being almost invisible, then building confidence and daring to speak up about things that matter, and if they’re too daring, and speak up too much, well…you know where that story goes. Let's be intentional about taking up space and supporting other women in doing the same.

Think of the last time you needed to share something important or when you really needed support. Who was the first person you contacted? If that person wouldn’t have been available for a period of time, who would you have contacted next?

Setting healthy boundaries is something we all seem to struggle with at some point in our lives. It's important to remember that we teach people how to treat us by how we honor our own needs. In this episode, we’ll walk through 5 steps you can take to start doing just that and continuing to move toward fully owning your power.

Part of owning your power is getting control of your schedule. You can do that by creating structure and routines, opening the door to living with more intention and purpose.

What structures have you created for your life? What are your daily routines? Be sure they're working FOR you and not against you.

In this episode, I offer some questions to consider as you navigate how to implement structure and routines, or perhaps restructure them.

"There's so much in the culture that's not said rather than what is said. It's the subtleties...there's a beauty, a way of life that is more about the belief that less is more...about respect of each other and elders and the idea of namasté ~ the light in you is the light in me." Michelle Sakhai, New York City based artist, sharing about how her experience visiting family in Japan every summer while growing up informs her art and how she lives her life.

In this episode, you'll feel that respect and light coming through in Michelle's way of being. There's such grounded strength and gentleness in her words and her paintings.

Your life purpose is about being in service of something much bigger than yourself. When you’re clear about your purpose, it’s easier to choose where you will focus your energy, or not; where you will say yes, or no. And, of course, how you spend your time is how you spend your life. You want it to be in service of something that makes the world a better place.

When you know your purpose, it’s your north star. It provides direction, it helps you to get back on track, it gives you more confidence in the decisions you make.

If you were to live into your purpose every day: How might your behavior and interactions be different? How might your life and your impact on others’ lives be different?

Your core values are the guiding principles and standards of behavior by which you lead your life. They’re what ground you and help you feel centered in good times and, perhaps more importantly, when things get a little rocky. When you’re clear about your values and what they look like in action, you’re more likely to be living authentically and making decisions that are in alignment with what truly matters to you. It is my belief that millions more women and girls coming into their power will bring about a kinder, gentler, more compassionate and just world where all people have the opportunity to reach their potential.

That is the purpose of this podcast. To encourage and support women in listening to their wisdom and owning their power.

If you have the same belief, let’s do this work together. The work of building self-confidence, of taking risks, of being vulnerable, of reaching out and connecting with and supporting other women. The good work, the important work of owning our individual and our collective power.

We’ll be talking about how we do that every week on this podcast.
