How can I continue to cultivate intimacy in my marriage? How can I maintain my sense of self as I journey through motherhood? How can I approach modern home economics in a way that feels authentic to me and my family? Why does it look like everyone else has it all together all the time? And most importantly: why is no one talking about what life is really like?
Welcome to Young Honest Mother: The Podcast where we chat about marriage, motherhood and modern home economics. In all honesty. Every week, host Maris Young, the Young Honest Mother, bears the torch for unapologetically honest conversations to follow. Unnerved by the unspoken, Maris celebrates the mundane glory of life living. As well as sharing thought-provoking viewpoints on subjects that matter, Maris also has heart-to-hearts with everyday women who are courageous enough to share their own stories. And you’ll also hear from industry truth-tellers far and wide who aren’t afraid to tell it like it is. You’ll leave feeling inspired to examine your surroundings more closely and empowered to start honest dialogues in your own community.
If you’re craving honest conversation about topics that matter, you’re in the right place.

We're smack dab in the middle of giving season, and I'm facing off with my tendency to hold back the best of myself.
The quick convergence of marriage, motherhood and modern home economics was disorienting, and all of the responsibilities felt too heavy to hold.
So, I got into the habit of giving sparingly. Begrudgingly even. In the name of self preservation.
But now that I am resurfacing from the depths of early postpartum, I am ready to enter a new paradigm.
And in this solo show episode of Young Honest Mother: The Podcast, I explore how I am rethinking what it means to give.

In all honesty, I am terrible at doing laundry.
I’ve ruined more of my husband’s clothes than I really care to count, and it’s been a very sore subject that’s haunted us throughout our nearly decade-long relationship.
Every couple of weeks, my laundry transgressions pile up again and launch us into an age-old cycle of discussions that have never really moved the needle.
Until recently.
And in Ep. 072 of Young Honest Mother: The Podcast, I’m airing my dirty laundry as I reflect on what shifted us out of the conversational rut that kept us overlooking the heart of the matter.

“So, when are you going to have another baby?” It’s a loaded question that’s been aimed at my heart since Milo was literally just a few days old.
Deciding whether or not to grow your family can involve so many factors. And after an extraordinarily disorienting postpartum experience, it’s been extremely challenging to find clarity about our family’s size.
But the other day, I had a simple, yet earth-shattering revelation that has completely shifted perspective on having another baby. This week on Young Honest Mother: The Podcast, we’re revisiting an honest conversation that was originally recorded and published in 2019.
I met Ashleigh in the comments section of one of @elizabeth_gilbert_writer’s Instagram posts about universal human compassion. She shared about how her family started thriving again after “doing a 180 from martyrmom to selfish mom.”
During this time, when the responsibilities of parents have multiplied in response to the pandemic, I think it’s critical to slow down and re-evaluate how we’re choosing to take on the tasks of marriage, motherhood and modern home economics. And this already-published episode serves as such a poignant reminder.

In July 2020, there was an uptick in honest conversations around the human trafficking of youth.
There were social media campaigns, marches and exposés coordinated to raise awareness.
But I wanted to find a way to move this discussion beyond a hashtag, a shirt color, a social media post.
I wanted to uncover practical ways that we can affect long-lasting change in the fight to free youth from sex trafficking.
So, I asked you to submit your burning questions about this cause, and then I reached out to Traffick911, the only child sex trafficking advocacy agency serving all of North Texas, to help me answer them.
And I had the opportunity to interview their Voice & Choice Community Program Coordinator, April Barker.

Whitney Archibald is multi-passionate and bubbling with curiosity. She got married young and was excited to start the big family she had always dreamed of. But she and her husband were forced to put those plans on hold as they struggled with infertility for five years. When she finally became pregnant, she was elated. And while she had longed for motherhood, she still found herself surprised by all that the experience had to offer.
Over the years, Whitney supported her husband as he became a surgeon, and they welcomed a total of five children to their family. After a while, though, she felt like she was drowning in all that it takes to manage a home and fulfilling family life. So, she decided to experiment. Each month, she selected one nagging problem to tackle. She would research solutions, interview other mothers about how they handled the situation and then commit to trying out new ideas in her own life. Eventually, she developed this project into a podcast called “How She Moms.” You can learn more at howshemoms.com and on Instagram @howshemoms.

Overwhelming anxiety seems to go hand-in-hand with the expectations placed on American mothers. And perinatal mood disorders like Postpartum Anxiety (PPA) are on the rise as women struggle to reconcile their shift in identities with a culture that reinforces extreme hyper vigilance.
After navigating through her own experience with PPA, author Sarah Menkedick set out on a quest to uncover more about this condition. She wrote “Ordinary Insanity: Fear and the Silent Crisis of Motherhood in America” as a compilation of her personal reflections, comprehensive research, historical contexts and accounts from 8 other women who lived with PPA. In my year of hosting Young Honest Mother: The Podcast, I’ve noticed something interesting: not many people are willing to share about their marriages.

My husband and I are diving deep into all things financial right now as we chart our course towards moving into a new home by the end of 2020. And since I’ve got my mind on my money and my money on my mind, I decided to sit down and open the doors to a conversation that often tends to go unspoken.
In all honesty, money is essential to modern home economics. But we often hold onto financial narratives that impact and influence how we earn, spend, invest, save, donate and share. As consumers, many of us are making a shift towards living more conscious and sustainable lifestyles. And those choices even trickle down to how we diaper our little ones.
Liz Turrigiano helped usher in a more eco-friendly approach to diaper life when she co-founded Diaperkind, a Brooklyn-based cloth diaper and laundering service in 2009. Over the years, she’s collected insights about what makes for a top-notch cloth diaper and how to make sustainable diaper choices more accessible and manageable. And she was inspired to co-create another company to help families keep things covered all around the world.
So, I sat down with Liz to learn more about her new venture, Esembly, a diapering system designed to help families live less disposably.
In episode 050, Liz shares:

I am a black woman living in America. And that means something.
While it seems that we are experiencing a collective awakening as more and more people understand that we are reckoning with racism right here and right now, racism is nothing new. But for some, speaking out against the injustices that black people have faced for centuries IS.
In this solo show episode, I share some ways that we can spark honest conversations about racism. We will fumble our words along the way, and it will feel uncomfortable. But choosing to stay silent will not lead to lasting, meaningful change. So, I’m sharing how we can take steps towards being anti-racist each and every day.

Have you ever had one of those days when you lose sight of the purpose behind your mothering?
You can’t see it, but I’m raising my hand HIGH.
The weeks blur into years, and resolute displays of toddler defiance have become commonplace. And I admit: sometimes, I struggle to remember what this is all building towards.
When I spoke with Eve Rodsky a few episodes ago, author of the New York Times’ Bestselling book Fair Play, she mentioned viewing our homes as our most important organizations. And then it hit me. The most successful business organizations are held together by a central aspiration: a mission statement. It helps keep everyone working towards the same, overall goals.
So, what if we applied the same concept to home life as well?
In Ep. 046 of #younghonestmotherthepodcast, I share:
-hard truths that have gotten in the way of seeing motherhood for all that it is
-how business organizations can inspire unity within the home
-the first steps in declaring a parenting mission statement of your own

Humans are storytellers by nature. We learn so much from hearing about other experiences and sharing our own. And the stories we tell ourselves can hold such power in our lives.
Many times, the stories we cling to are rooted in false narratives. They feature an overgeneralization of our fears that we’ve internalized without ever realizing it.
In Ep. 045 of #younghonestmotherthepodcast, I share:
-some of the most common stories I hear that are holding people back
-open up about my personal experience rewriting the stories I used to tell myself
