Curious Living: Recent Episodes

Rev. Monica Humpal

Albert Einstein is quoted saying, “The important thing is not to stop questioning. Curiosity has its own reason for existing. One cannot help but be in awe when he contemplates the mysteries of eternity, of life, of the marvelous structure of reality. It is enough if one tries merely to comprehend a little of this mystery every day. Never lose a holy curiosity.”

In this podcast we will explore our curious questions as we unpack these curiosities through the lens of Scripture and our Christian faith. Through thoughtful and engaging interviews with neighbors, pastors, and experts, we will walk through some common, and even challenging, questions while valuing individual perspectives along the way. Perhaps these curious conversations will spark the same holy curiosity in you.

After nearly 20 years in business and finance, I had what I can only describe as a divine interruption. God placed it on my heart to write my own book—not just to tell my story, but to leave a spiritual legacy. That single act of obedience unlocked a greater calling: to help others do the same.

I founded The 1 and Only Publishing to serve aspiring authors—especially those who feel called to write but don't know where to begin or how to afford it. We help everyday people turn their God-given messages, expertise, and experiences into powerful, professionally published books. And we don't just offer services—we offer support, clarity, and belief when others have said "not yet."

My story resonates with faith-based audiences, entrepreneurs, creatives, and purpose-driven people who've been sitting on a message for too long. I can speak to:

Finding purpose in a season of transition or loss Building a mission-led business from scratch The practical and spiritual journey of writing a book How ordinary people can create extraordinary impact through publishing My mission is bold—555,000 books in 10 years, in 10 different languages. But it's not about me. It's about equipping others to leave a legacy, reach those they're called to, and fulfill their God-given assignment through the written word.

More and more adults are realizing that they have experienced trauma in their lives. We may not have realized it at the time. But, now, as adults, we are working through issues, emotions, and struggles and coming to terms wtih the fact that we've carried the burden of trauma for years. Or, perhaps we are very aware that we experienced trauma in our past and are trying to work our way through it while wondering if our faith in God could help us. It's an intriguing question and one that our guest knows all too well. If you have been wrestling with trauma and seeking God in your healing, this is the podcast episode for you.

Calvin Bagley was raised in a home where education was withheld, modern medicine was forbidden, and extreme religious beliefs replaced love with fear. He was injected with horse medicine instead of being taken to the doctor. His meals were rationed, and his joy was policed. His education consisted of being taught to read by his older sister afteraccidentally learning the alphabet backwards. His world was one of poverty, abuse, neglect, and secrecy.

And yet, he broke free. Today, Calvin Bagley is a nationally recognized entrepreneur and the founder of Nuvo Health, a Medicare-focused company that's helped over 60 thousand people navigate health insurance with honesty and heart. His companies, including The Medicare Store, Medicare Hub, and PlanFit, are transforming the healthcare industry (often known for predatory tactics) by putting people before profits and ethics before compensation.

Calvin is the author of Hiding from the School Bus, a memoir that chronicles his journey from hiding in the sagebrush to avoid the school bus to standing tall and building multimillion-dollar businesses, traveling to all 50 states and all seven continents, and thriving with his family grounded in love and faith.

Calvin was the seventh of nine children. As an infant, his mother handed him to his teenage sister, saying, "This one's yours."; His sister cared for him as if she were his mother until the age of three, when his father forcibly took him from her arms, shouting, "You are not his mother!"; She was never allowed to touch him again.

He was a perpetual outsider, even facing incredible pain at scout camp, when a group of boys attacked him, wielding cactus-covered sticks. At 19, he left home to serve a mission in Brazil for the LDS Church. This changed the trajectory of his life forever. He returned home determined to change his fate. He self-studied and earned a GED at 21. After bombing a college placement exam, his college applications were all denied, but he talked a college admissions counselor into giving him a trial run as a non-admitted student. He later became the most unlikely college graduate, earning a Bachelor's degree in Business Administration from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas (UNLV).

His story includes pain and trauma, but also many small triumphs that cumulatively shape his life and personality and have led to his resilient nature. He learned to swim at 22, traveled the world as a flight attendant, rose through the ranks at Bank of America from a teller to a Consumer Market Manager, and married the woman he now calls his saving grace. Calvin doesn't just share a story-he opens a door. On the other side of the door is what's possible when you refuse to let your past define your future.

As a parent of a young adult, I've been a witness to this void of purpose my kids seem to have. They have floundered through so many things - aimless and frustrated. As a parent I want to help them, but it's hard to help and honor boundaries all at the same time. We, as a community, want to help the young adults around us find their purpose, but we simply don't know where to start. Brittany was a fantastic and wise resource to help us tackle this curious question. Take a listen!

Financial generosity is vital to our mission as followers of Christ to transform the world in His name. Yet, when churches talk about giving, some people hear “greed” instead of “grace.” In this episode of Curious Living, we dig beneath the surface of the church’s “ask” and explore why generosity matters, what it really supports, and how we can reframe the conversation. When we get married or enter into a long-term relationship, we soon realize the stark differences between ourselves and our mate. The flaws that were invisible to us at the beginning are now, perhaps, all we see. This goes both ways because our significant other sees those flaws in us as well. Couples tend to spend a great deal of energy looking for ways to "change" their mate, when, in fact, they don't have the power to create change in others. So, what do you do? How can you encourage your partner to make positive changes? Our guest on this episode has written two amazing devotional books that help us answer that question. She is a lovely person who is wise and so incredibly insightful. You will want to listen and take notes!

In today’s world, clear communication feels increasingly challenging. With so many differences and divides among us, it’s harder to express ourselves honestly and lovingly while being understood as we intend. This challenge is especially visible on social media, where misunderstandings often deepen the divisions between us.

Scripture speaks profoundly to this struggle, particularly in the book of Acts, where the Holy Spirit empowers the disciples to communicate across divides. In the Christian tradition, we call this moment "Pentecost." This year, we celebrate Pentecost on June 8, 2025. It’s a time to reflect on what the Holy Spirit accomplished then—and what the Spirit is calling us to do now to bridge the vast divides in our world.

If you’d like to explore the Scripture passages mentioned in this episode, here’s the list:

  • Acts 2:1-12
  • Philippians 2:3-4
  • 1 Corinthians 13:1
  • James 1:19
  • Luke 12:12
  • Galatians 3:28
  • John 13:35

We concluded the episode with this prayer: Holy Spirit, give us the words to bridge our divides, the patience to listen, and the love to unite us as your people. Amen.

Our guest host, Mary Ana Smith, sits down with Rev. Carrie Wright to discuss her journey as an adoptive mom. Adoption seems to many as more of a challenge than a blessing, but Carrie feels the opposite having not only adopted two children, but also having fostered many. What gives Carrie life is spending her days with people of all ages learning to give praise to God. We are all on this journey in different stages but each of us are called to praise in one way or another. The arts are the ways that she hears God the best and she loves it when others are bringing their “song” as well. Carrie fell in love with making music at 8 years old and that love continues to weave through her especially in the midst of worship. She is an ordained Deacon in The United Methodist Church and the Associate of Music and Worship Arts at Williamson’s Chapel UMC. Carrie is married to Clay, a tech guru working for Coca Cola Consolidated and stays busy chasing after their 4 kids ages 9 to 18.

It certainly feels good to help others in need. We donate food, money, and even time to help those who are less fortunate than ourselves. And, oftentimes we assume that we have done what's best for them. But was it the best for them? Or, was it something that made us feel good in the moment? This is a tough question to ponder and our guest on this episode shares some incredible insights and wisdom to help us tackle it.

Kevin Ward is the Director of Youth, Young Adults, and Missions at Williamson's Chapel UMC in Mooresville, NC. He is married to Amy Ward and has two children, Anna and James. Service and mission is not only important to Kevin but to his whole family. Kevin has worked in the United Methodist Church full-time or part-time for 27 years. Throughout the last 27 years, connecting folks to healthy missions has been a passion of Kevins. Having led or participated in over 40 week-long mission trips, Kevin has seen missions done in both healthy and unhealthy ways. Reflecting on how mission trips and work have impacted both those serving and those being served has helped Kevin develop a healthier model of mission and service work. Kevin believes that being involved in mission and service is something that every Christian is called to do on an ongoing basis. Mission and service should move beyond charity and into something woven to our faith's fabric. It may get messy, but in the mess is where we most often find Jesus. Is it acceptable to question God or Christianity if you call yourself a Christian? Does doubt mean you're not truly a Christian? Should faith be so unwavering that questioning is off-limits?

These were questions I wrestled with in my youth, and I believe that misconception still lingers today. In this episode, our guest will help us explore the beauty of curiosity and how asking questions can deepen our faith.

This episode is intentionally released just before election day. We know that voting season can sometimes bring out the worst in even the kindest and most loving individuals. In quieter moments, it’s easy to love and accept others. However, when those around us express beliefs and feelings that differ greatly from our own—especially when they openly voice those differences—it can be challenging to maintain that "loving feeling."

How do we navigate the complexities of loving others in a time of such diverse opinions? Our guest is here to help us explore this topic, offering valuable insights and practical tools for fostering understanding and compassion.

As far back as she can remember, she played school in her room, teaching dolls and stuffed animals from a chalkboard, and holding parent/teacher conferences with those who struggled. As she grew older, the stuffed animals became real students, to whom she taught band and then math. As her career in public education blossomed, Kim learned her passion was teaching adults, making difficult topics easier to understand and enjoying laughter in the process. The sudden loss of her husband, Paul, to a blood clot in 2014 sent her on a personal journey of grief and a battle to reclaim joy in her life for her and her sons. Wanting to share her zeal for life with others, she became a certified Zig Ziglar trainer, speaker, and coach. After retiring from public education in 2022, she felt a calling to utilize her teaching and speaking skills to revitalize the hearts, minds, and dreams of people, activating them towards fulfilling their God-given purpose.

How does God interact with us? How would God like us to see and perceive Him? What type of relationship would God want to have with us? How do WE want/need to connect with God? Great questions that many followers of Jesus ask as they work toward deepening their faith. At times, we struggle to answer this question because we were brought up believing that God is beyond us and out of reach so having a "relationship" with God sounds strange. Others of us are simply trying to determine God's will in our lives and how that ties into how we are choosing to lean in and deepen our relationship with God. Either way, it's a great question that is explored in this episode with someone who has explored that question for himself and leaned into it so deeply that he has committed his life to helping others answer this question for themselves.

Paul Zolman is the author of "Role of Love." In His wisdom, He placed us in a variety of circumstances that require us to find our way back to His pure love. So, what qualifies Paul Zolman to speak about love? His childhood experience of the opposite of love. From that austere beginning, and the distaste it formed inside him, he searched for and eventually created a method that transformed his life from anger to loving everyone. Growing up in a family of abuse, physical touch became his preferred love style, only because of the regularity. He could almost count on it. It was consistent. He came to think that was the way to express love. But deep inside, he knew that was a twisted belief. He wanted a better life for himself, which is why he created a paradigm shift that works. In this book, you’ll find what helped Paul Zolman move from a childhood boot camp of abuse to being a person who loves everyone and can find good about anyone in any circumstance. This is truly the role of love.

We would all agree that today's world is incredibly divided. This division isn't just political, it's societal, it's religious, it's even within families and between friends. Our stories have power and this is one of the many ways God uses the challenges in our lives to bring about good for us and for others. But, how do we share our story? Should we? And how do we know it will actually make a difference?

Our guest on today's show has recently published a book that can answer these questions and she's gracious enough to share these thoughts on this episode. You will want to listen and take notes as Michelle shares her wisdom and parts of her own story!

The concept of the Holy Spirit is challenging for Christians to wrap their minds around, let alone those who are not Christians. Oftentimes we simply choose to ignore this part of the triune God because it can be hard to explain and understand. In this episode we will face this curious question head-on with the lead pastor of Williamson's Chapel UMC - Rev. Wes Smith.

To paraphrase Paul, if we don't have love, then there's no point in anything else we do as Christians. Helping the church grow together in love is what Wes is most passionate about. His hope is that members and guests experience the love of God as we worship, gather in small groups, and work together to serve God. Wes enjoys studying the Scripture and then preaching or teaching about God’s Word. If you’re interested in learning more about the Scripture or theology, Wes is the perfect guide in your journey.

We hear it all of the time - how important it is to love yourself. This is rule #1 when building (or rebuilding) self-esteem. But to "agape" love yourself is so much more. It's a deeper love. It's the love Jesus has for us and that's a powerful love.

In this episode, we talk about how to truly "agape" love ourselves the way Jesus loves us. Our guest, Amy Connell, guides us through the importance of this practice and how to integrate this level of love into our everyday lives.

This is a tough curious question to address. Many of us have had times in our life when we felt worthless - not of value to anyone or anything - and simply not enough. This leads to struggles with our mental health and contributes to dysfunctional and unhealthy relationships. And, some of us have encountered situations in our childhood that contribute to this feeling of not being "enough" in this world.

Our guest in this episode is a life coach and specializes in helping us embrace our "enough" so that we can move beyond just "enough" and into a place of thriving.

This episode is close to our heart at Williamson's Chapel because it's about caring for kids who age out of the foster care system. We have several families who are foster parents and we are devoted to helping families who foster and the children in the foster care system. Miriam's ministry is powerful and you may feel called to join her in helping these vulnerable children.

Guest Information

Miriam Cobb is the founder and director at Empty Frames Initiative, a non-profit dedicated to empowering orphaned and vulnerable youth as they transition out of state care.

Within this role, Miriam advocates for youth exiting care compiles new and successful resources for this population and develops programs and curricula to meet this international need. Empty Frames Initiative recently published the book, The Story of Foster Care, which served as a pilot of EFI’s photography-based literacy curriculum, Storytelling Through Photography. The book explains foster care from the perspective of 3 former foster youth, 2 social workers, and 2 foster parents, and serves as a model of what Miriam hopes Empty Frames Initiative will be to others: an organization that empowers individuals to tell their stories, become connected to their community, and find hope in Christ.

In 2019 Miriam served on the North Carolina Coalition Against Human Trafficking Board of Directors, chairing the Community/Faith Based committee. She continues bringing awareness to the intersection of human trafficking and state care through speaking engagements, seeing this as a significant need that is often misunderstood or unmentioned in the broader discussion of human trafficking. Because many social justice issues can be tied to state care models and childhood trauma, she actively looks
to understand, and engage her community in understanding, the intersectionality of needs.

Many churches are opening as COVID restrictions are lifted. Yet, churches are finding that the number of people that used to worship on their campus is much lower than before. Part of that is due to the concerns some have for their health as well as those who may not be vaccinated yet. However, there is a part of our faithful population that has become accustomed to worshiping at home. We will always have an online option for folks and we value the need for that type of access for those who are unable to attend in person. But, the question is, will people come back? Will they value in-person worship again? Why is it important that we worship in person?

On this episode, you'll hear from our host, Rev. Monica Humpal, and our producer, Derek Fields. As ministry professionals, they will discuss the value of worshiping in person and how this may evolve moving forward.

What if we say the wrong thing?

Our guest for this episode, Rev. Today's world is incredibly divisive. And that's to be expected, to some degree, because we are all unique individuals with differing opinions. However, we have lost the ability to still like one another if we disagree. In some cases, we see violence erupt due to this divisiveness. So why can't we get along even when we disagree? How is this effecting the church and those of us who are called to love others? And, how can we do a better job of getting along with others and even tolerating those who can't seem to get along with others? Find out in this special "Part 2"as we discuss these issues and this question with Pastor Jan Brittain.

Our human nature is to judge others within seconds of meeting them. Depending on the circumstances, we deem them a "good person" or a "bad person" based on how they look, their behavior, or their past actions. We ponder this question today as we see more and more hostility in the world, name calling, and inappropriate assumptions being made about people. And, what would (or should) be the Christian response to this question? Are Christians not held to a higher standard when it comes to how we view (and love) others? This episodes dives deeper with questions regarding how we judge and see those who have been imprisoned.

Our guests in this episode are the leaders in a local ministry that supports men who are released from prison by providing housing and recovery. The Foundry House is located in Statesville, NC and is slated to open its doors on September 1, 2020.

Chip McGee is a pastor and leader in the non-profit sector due to his core values that people matter and there’s always hope for a future greater than the present. Formerly a high school math teacher educated at North Carolina State University, he now serves as a Licensed Local Pastor in the United Methodist Church as he completes his Masters of Divinity from Asbury Theological Seminary. Chip also leads an initiative that hopes to lower overdose and recidivism rates in Iredell County by providing housing, workforce development, and a pathway to recovery from addiction through “The Foundry House.” He loves living in the heart of Statesville and enjoying life with his wife, Lindsey, and their three children.

Brian King is a building contractor in North Carolina and lives in the Statesville area with his wife and daughter. He is a licensed local pastor under appointment at Christ Church in Hickory, NC as their Recovery Pastor. He and Chip are the co-founders of the Foundry House ministry.

And, what would (or should) be the Christian response to this question? Are Christians not held to a higher standard when it comes to how we view (and love) others?

Our guests in this episode tackle this question from two perspectives: (1) from the perspective of having lived a life of "judgement" and (2) from the perspective of a clergy person who teaches redemption and tries to lead by example.
