Parental Control: Recent Episodes

My Baba

Parental Control is a monthly parenting and lifestyle podcast created by My Baba and hosted by the website’s founder Leonora Bamford. The first episode came about when Leonora became increasingly frustrated at how challenging it is to keep her children safe online and wanted to find out what teenagers really think about being online and staying safe. Parental Control is about feeling in control as a parent or prospective parent and feeling confident tackling problems head-on. Each month, we’ll discuss current and on-going issues that affect mums and dads throughout parenthood and tease out the solutions with the help of some brilliant guest and expert speakers.

My Baba provides the daily scoop on family, food and lifestyle - we’re not just experts at all things parenting.

Fear is a normal part of childhood. From monsters under the bed to spiders, needles and the dark, most children will experience fears as they grow. But when does a fear become a phobia? And what can parents do to help?

In this episode of Parental Control, Ellie Thompson is joined by leading Harley Street phobia expert and Face Your Fears author Christopher Paul Jones. Having overcome his own debilitating phobias, Christopher has spent more than 20 years helping people around the world—including Hollywood actors, musicians and celebrities—break free from fears that once controlled their lives.

Together, they explore why phobias develop, how parents can respond without reinforcing fear, and why Christopher believes many phobias can be overcome far more quickly than most people realise.

Whether your child is terrified of dogs, needles, vomiting or even going to school, this fascinating conversation is packed with practical advice that could help your whole family face fears with greater confidence.

Every year in England, thousands of bright, capable kids sit down to take their GCSE English and maths exams — and fail. Not because they don't know the material. Not because they haven't worked hard. But because the exam itself only tests one narrow way of showing what you know.

My guest today has lived this. She watched her own dyslexic son work harder than anyone, understand the material, and still miss the pass mark — again and again — by the smallest of margins. And she watched what that did to him.

So she did something about it. She founded Fairer Exams, a parent-led campaign fighting for a fairer GCSE system — and she's since taken the message to the TEDx stage with a talk called Why exams need to change.

Today we're talking about dyslexia, dyscalculia, and why England is falling so far behind when it comes to fair assessment. We'll get into the terrifying stats — did you know as many as one in three young people are effectively locked out of opportunity because of this one narrow form of testing? And we'll talk about a route that exists right now, hiding in plain sight, that almost nobody knows about — one that could change the trajectory for thousands of kids, if only more parents knew it was there.

This is a conversation for every parent — not just those with a child who has additional needs — because this system touches every single family sending a child through school.

My guest today is Hannah Gee, founder of Fairer Exams. What a pleasure it was.

In this honest and thought-provoking episode of Parental Control, Ellie Thompson sits down with eating disorder specialist and author Elle Mace to explore the complex relationship women have with food, body image and self-worth.

From the pressures of social media and the rise of weight-loss injections to perimenopause, ageing and the unrealistic expectations placed on women, this conversation unpacks why so many of us still feel we're never quite enough—and, more importantly, how we can begin to change that.

If you've ever found yourself shouting over something small, only to be overwhelmed with guilt moments later, you're far from alone.

In this episode of Parental Control, Ellie Thompson is joined by award-winning journalist and author Lauren Novak to explore one of motherhood's least talked about realities: mum rage.

Lauren has spent more than two decades reporting on family life, child safety and social issues, and after becoming a mother herself during the Covid-19 pandemic, she turned her attention to the hidden pressures facing modern mums. In her book Meltdown, she explores what really sits beneath the anger, from the relentless mental load and sleep deprivation to hormones, guilt and the impossible expectations placed on mothers today.

Together, Ellie and Lauren discuss why so many mums feel they're constantly on the edge, why maternal anger is still surrounded by shame, and what parents can do to recognise the warning signs before they reach breaking point.

If you've ever wondered, "Why am I so angry all the time?" this honest and reassuring conversation is for you.

Becoming parents changes everything, including your relationship. In this episode of Parental Control, Ellie Thompson is joined by relationship and sex therapist Georgina Vass to discuss what really happens to intimacy, communication and connection after children.

Why do so many couples end up feeling more like colleagues than lovers? Is it normal for sex to disappear after kids? How much conflict comes down to the mental load? And how do you know the difference between a rough patch and a relationship that's genuinely in trouble?

Together, they explore the biggest communication mistakes couples make, the impact of social media on modern relationships, and why many women feel unprepared for the effect motherhood can have on sexual wellbeing.

An honest, insightful and reassuring conversation for anyone navigating love, sex and family life.

Body image worries are starting younger. Diet culture may have changed its clothes, but it certainly hasn't gone away — it's simply rebranded as wellness, self-improvement and "health optimisation," all while our children scroll through TikTok, influencers and impossible appearance standards in real time.

In this episode of Parental Control, Ellie Thompson is joined by Elle Mace, eating disorder expert, coach, author of the upcoming book Food Freedom, and someone whose own struggles with body image and disordered eating began at just 10 years old.

Together, they explore the early warning signs parents may miss, how to tell the difference between normal food fussiness and something more concerning, the everyday language around food and bodies that can accidentally cause harm, and what today's obsession with wellness, weight-loss drugs, and appearance culture is doing to young minds.

A thoughtful, honest and hugely important conversation for any parent raising children in a world obsessed with bodies.

Starting secondary school is one of the biggest milestones in childhood, and, if we're honest, often one of the most emotionally charged for parents, too.

From agonising over school choices and friendship groups to worrying about long commutes, organisation, bullying, overwhelm and whether your child is actually ready for such a huge leap, the move to Year 7 can feel daunting for the whole family.

In this episode of Parental Control, Ellie Thompson is joined once again by education expert Katharine Radice to discuss how parents can support children through the transition to secondary school with confidence.

Together, they explore how to choose the right school without becoming consumed by league tables and pressure, why the "best" school isn't always the best fit, how to build independence before September, what to expect emotionally in those early weeks and how transitions can feel different for children with ADHD, autism, anxiety or additional needs.

A practical, reassuring listen for any parent preparing to wave goodbye at the Year 7 gates.

Exam season can bring stress to the entire household. From slammed bedroom doors and sleepless nights to younger children already feeling the pressure of assessment before secondary school is even on the horizon.

In this episode of Parental Control, Ellie Thompson is joined by education expert Katharine Radice, author of The Parent's Guide to Exam Stress, to unpack what exam pressure is really doing to our children, and to us as parents.

Are SATs putting too much pressure on children far too young? How do anxiety, ADHD, autism and perfectionism change the way exam stress shows up? And how can parents support revision without becoming the household drill sergeant?

With more than 20 years in education, Katharine shares practical, reassuring advice on spotting the signs a child is struggling, managing expectations, navigating post-exam meltdowns, and helping children build resilience without tying their self-worth to academic performance.

From homework meltdowns and bedtime battles to the growing conversation around medication, parenting a child with ADHD can feel overwhelming, confusing, and often isolating. And for many families—especially those with girls—getting a diagnosis (and the right support) can take years.

In this episode of Parental Control, we sit down with Dr Olivia Kessel, medical doctor, neurodiversity advocate, and author of Beyond the Label, to unpack what ADHD really looks like behind the scenes.

We cover the realities parents don't always hear about: why homework becomes a nightly battle, how ADHD shows up differently in girls, the truth about medication stigma, and what's actually going on in the brain when sleep becomes a struggle.

Whether you're navigating a diagnosis, stuck on a waiting list, or simply wondering if your child might have ADHD, this conversation offers clarity, reassurance, and practical insight you can actually use.

We'll be talking about what's really going on for children today, what schools are seeing on the ground, and why initiatives like The Big School Workout, taking place this Mental Health Awareness Week on 14th May, in partnership with Joe Wicks, are more important than ever.

Relationships don't usually fall apart overnight. More often, they unravel slowly through miscommunication, unmet needs and emotional distance. When connection feels lost, many couples are left wondering whether their relationship can be repaired — or whether it's already too late.

In this episode of Parental Control, Ellie Thompson is joined by Sophie Orozco, a relationship coach whose work is rooted in both professional expertise and lived experience. After saving her own marriage from the brink of divorce, Sophie spent over a decade studying psychology, communication and intimacy dynamics to help couples rebuild connection from the ground up.

Together, they explore what really happens when relationships reach breaking point, why traditional advice often falls short, and how couples can begin to repair trust, closeness and desire. This conversation looks beyond quick fixes, focusing instead on the deeper work required to create lasting change — and why it's possible to turn a relationship around, even when it feels deeply stuck.

Heavy periods affect millions of women, yet for many, they remain something to quietly endure rather than openly discuss. In this episode, Parental Control explores the real impact of heavy and painful periods on women's physical health, emotional wellbeing, work and relationships — and asks why period-related disruption is still so often dismissed or minimised.

Ellie Thompson is joined by Dr Nisa Aslam, GP and women's health expert, and Anna Maxwell, pharmacist and founder of healthcare brand Maxwellia, to unpack the findings of the Don't Go With the Flow report. Together, they discuss what actually counts as a "normal" period, when pain or heavy bleeding may signal an underlying condition, and why so many women feel uncomfortable seeking help.

From workplace stigma and iron deficiency to being dismissed by healthcare professionals, the conversation focuses on empowering women with clear information, reassurance and practical next steps — and challenges the long-held belief that period problems are simply something women should have to put up with.

In this episode, Parental Control takes listeners inside the IVF lab to understand how embryos are assessed and selected during fertility treatment, including PGT-A and time-lapse IVF. Ellie Thompson is joined by embryologist and founder of All About Embryology, Victoria Wigley, to answer key questions about genetic testing, embryo development and the complex decisions made behind the scenes.

Victoria explains what embryologists do during the IVF process and breaks down PGT-A testing, including what it can and cannot tell patients. She also discusses how recent reports of healthy babies born from embryos labelled aneuploid are challenging long-held assumptions. The conversation explores the difference between aneuploid and mosaic embryos, whether viable embryos may sometimes be ruled out, and how patients can interpret results when the science is uncertain.

The episode also looks at how time-lapse incubators have transformed embryo observation, allowing embryologists to track development over time and support clinical decisions. Drawing on both professional expertise and patient experience, the discussion highlights how fertility specialists balance transparency, uncertainty and hope, and examines the advances shaping the future of IVF.

Leading UK psychotherapist Julia Samuel MBE joins Ellie Thompson to talk about child loss and the lifelong impact of grief. Julia is one of the most trusted voices in the UK on bereavement, trauma and healing, and has spent decades supporting families through the unimaginable. Her work has shaped how we understand grief, not as something to "get over", but as something we learn to live alongside.

As many listeners will know, Ellie lost her son Billy, aka Billy the Brave, to DIPG, and grief has since become woven into everyday life in ways she could never have imagined. Like so many bereaved parents, she has learned that we don't move on from our children; we move forward carrying them with us.

In this conversation, Julia brings compassion, clarity and deep insight as we explore what it truly means to live with grief: how it shows up in relationships, how siblings experience loss, and how parents can find moments of meaning and hope again — while continuing to hold the profound love we have for the children no longer in our arms.

Today's episode is one that sits incredibly close to Ellie's heart, as she discusses coping with Christmas after child loss. As many listeners will know, Ellie lost her beautiful boy Billy to DIPG, and this is her second Christmas without him. The festive season can bring a complex mix of emotions for bereaved parents, the memories, the empty space, and the pressure to appear "festive" when the heart is somewhere else entirely.

In this episode, Ellie is joined by Bereavement Support Service Lead Rachel Tegg from Child Bereavement UK for an open, gentle and honest conversation about what it means to face Christmas after losing a child. Whether someone is in their first year, their fifth year or anywhere in between, this discussion offers comfort, understanding and the reminder that no parent walks this path alone.

Content Warning This episode includes discussion around the death of a child, grief and the emotional challenges of Christmas. Listeners are encouraged to take care of themselves while listening and to step away at any time if needed.

One of the most-searched questions in sexual wellness today is "Why are vibrators healthy?" — and few people are better positioned to answer it than Samantha Marshall, Head of Brand at Smile Makers Collection. As a leader in the global intimate-wellness space, Sam has spent the past five years helping redefine pleasure as an important part of self-care. Under her leadership, Smile Makers' colourful, wellness-driven vibrators and tools have entered mainstream retailers like Sephora, Ulta, and Selfridges, pushing the conversation around sexual wellbeing further into the open.

Sam also leads Vulva Talks, Smile Makers' free, pleasure-positive sex-education programme, where she offers clear, accessible guidance on everything from self-pleasure to understanding your body. Her work directly addresses why vibrators can support sexual health — from boosting confidence to reducing stress and improving body awareness.

In today's episode, we explore sexual wellness, self-pleasure, and how changing the narrative around intimacy empowers people to build healthier relationships with their bodies.

On this week’s episode, we’re joined by Louise Fox, a mother who has turned unimaginable personal loss into a powerful force for change. Louise’s son George was a bright, animal-loving 12-year-old when he began having headaches that were repeatedly dismissed as harmless. Eleven months later, he died from an aggressive brain tumour. In the years since, Louise has raised hundreds of thousands of pounds for Brain Tumour Research, supported the Tessa Jowell Foundation and co-founded the Angel Mums collective to improve paediatric palliative care. She’s now a leading voice in Brain Cancer Justice, a campaign demanding serious government investment and better care for brain cancer patients.

Brain Cancer Justice We’ll talk to Louise about how she and her family navigated those first terrifying weeks of misdiagnosis, what she learned about the shortcomings of current treatments and why she’s fighting to make genome sequencing and clinical trials available to every child with a brain tumour. We’ll hear about George’s character and the community of “Gorgeous George” supporters who’ve kept his memory alive, and ask Louise what policy changes she believes could help transform brain cancer from terminal to treatable.

I just had the most amazing hour chatting with Melissa Hemsley. We talked about everything from her IVF journey and, in particular, the highs and lows that come with IVF to her favourite recipes and how she loves using up everything in the fridge - nothing goes to waste! We have renamed leftovers "rollovers" because it sounds nicer, and how could one say no to a freestyle family fritter. Melissa talked about the beginning of her career and what got her into cooking, and also her love for charity work. I can’t wait to get her back on the show! What a lovely way to start a Wednesday morning.

Noodle Recipe: https://www.instagram.com/p/CrKxnrUolTH/?igshid=ZjE2NGZiNDQ=

Cauli or broccoli cashew noodles This is quick & packed with veg (cavolo nero/cauliflower/kale) & loads of ginger & garlic to liven up your week I think of this as a fridge raid noodle dish as whether it’s cauli, broccoli, cabbage or sprouts, it’s all delicious

Extra delicious with kimchi or sauerkraut plus pop a fried egg on top too if you like or some golden mushrooms too.

Feeds 4 in 30 mins Ingredients: * 1 medium cauliflower w leaves 800g * 150g cavolo nero or kale * 4 portions noodles, I like buckwheat

For the dressing: * Juice of 2 juicy limes or 1 big lemon * 4 tbsp extra virgin olive oil * 3 tbsp tamari * 1.5 inches fresh ginger, finely grated * Chilli flakes, to taste * 2 garlic cloves, finely grated * 2 tsp maple syrup or honey * 2 tsp toasted sesame oil * Sea salt & pepper to taste

Serve with: * Big handful cashews, toasted and roughly chopped * kimchi/fried eggs/both

Method: 1. Make the dressing by mixing all of the ingredients together in a small bowl or jar or blitz in a food processor if you like your sauces smoother 2. Cook your fave noodles to the packet instructions then drain & toss with a little oil to stop them sticking. 3. Meanwhile toast your cashews in a large frying pan & set aside. Then in same pan, heat 1 tbsp coconut oil or ghee & fry the chopped cauliflower florets plus the finely chopped leaves on a medium heat for about 5 minutes, stir every minute or so until just tender & going golden at the edges. Add some sea salt and a little splash of water

Lucinda Miller is always my go-to for advice when it comes to feeding the family. Although this podcast is relevant for any parent, this is more focused on secondary school ages.

We talked about how the food we eat affects our moods and why cooking from scratch gives the most nutritional benefits. Lucinda surprised me by saying why a good fry-up could actually be the best start for children before school. And we talked a lot about helping children with neurodiversity can fuel their bodies in the right way.

As always, I had to touch on gut health, hormones, and what supplements our children should or could be taking. Don’t forget to tune in to find out why zinc and iron are such important minerals for growing children.

I could talk about gut health until the cows come home, so speaking to Rebecca was an absolute pleasure this morning. She is incredibly knowledgeable about the gut microbiome and agrees about the importance of the first thousand days. If you’re looking for a probiotic for anyone in the family, this podcast is for you.

We discuss everything surrounding the topic of gut health, from when to start taking a probiotic and how often, to the development of an infant’s gut and allergies, including whether allergies can be grown out of. We touch on eczema, colic and reflux and round off with the importance of moderation when it comes to nutrition and processed food. Here is the GETTING STARTED VIDEO for guardians. This tells you how to create an applicant (child) account and gain access to the system. It’s really useful and it’s only five minutes.

There is also a great series of articles online covering absolutely every question we’ve ever been asked or anticipated being asked! We have a whole support portal, which can be searched for any query at all! It’s great (the video is on there too) and there are articles that cover everything. At last count, we had over 140 different support articles on there for parents and we’re growing that all the time.

If you’re really struggling, you can submit a ticket on there.

Lastly on our families hub we’re posting up new resources, lessons and revision plans to support these new tests and also to be mindful that tests can be stressful for both parents and children. We are about to launch a range of articles that are specifically aimed at reducing exam stress and we’ve teamed up with a leading neuroscientist to do this. We’re also going to provide schools and families with a range of ideas that can support responsible preparation for the test.

If you’re feeling confident and want to go straight to the guardian portal or just double-check that you registered in the right place: here is that link directly too! Just click on create and account, but watch that video first. It’s intuitive and self-explanatory but, always good to see what you’re doing!

Show notes 1. Le Creuset Stainless Steel Rectangular Roasting Tin

This is an investment, but it's the best roasting tray I have tried. Perfect for roasts and tray bakes it makes one tray cooking easy this Summer

  1. Daylesford Double Rectangular Bento Box

This is the second summer I am using these adorable bento boxes for kids' snacks and lunches on the go. They are brilliant for picnics too, in my opinion, food always tastes better outdoors. So let's take advantage of the Summer months and spend more time eating al fresco. I always find it's a great way to bring some fun and adventure to meal times with my own kids.

  1. Blafre Stainless Steel Drinking Flasks

I am not usually without them for both the kids and me. These are our go-to water bottles at home, they have lasted brilliantly and the stainless steel bottle keeps drinks cool. You buy the bottle end separately and there are plenty of colours to choose from.

  1. Sophie Conran’s Cream Floret Tableware

My current obsession is Sophie Conran’s floret collection. The beautiful bowls come in different sizes and I have filled my kitchen with them: for lemons, tomatoes and onions. I love to have ingredients to hand to inspire my cooking.

  1. David Mellor’s Porcelain Children’s Tableware

A recent buy, but I love this classic design from 1975 it's timeless. I have a drawer of kids' plates and bowls and these sets are really useful and well-loved.

  1. Wean Green Storage Cubes

The best storage containers I have tried, I especially like these mini cubes. They were fantastic when I was weaning my children, but I have used them ever since. For leftovers and odds and ends that you want to turn into snacks, they are brilliant. The containers themselves are glass, I bought mine on Amazon and they have just lasted brilliantly.

  1. Papier’s Recipe Books

It is always a good time to start a family cookbook, writing down all of your favourite recipes. I love the designs from Papier, their hardback notebooks are beautifully made. I am in process of cooking through all my mother’s recipes, she sadly passed away in 2021. Cooking the recipes of my childhood helps me feel closer to her and process my grief. I hope to write them down for my children and pass on the story of our family through food.

  1. Kitchen Aid Muffin Tray

Found my muffin tray in stock and it is a simple one but I prefer the aluminised steel finish to others. This is brilliant for baking, but you can also turn it into a sharing tray for children and it will double up as the perfect snack tray!

  1. If You Care Unbleached Parchment Baking Roll

I cook with these baking sheets almost every day and they save a mountain of washing up. For me, they are one of my kitchen must-haves.

  1. Rukmini Iyer’s brilliant Roasting Tin Series

Such a clever concept and beautifully written, with delicious combinations. Rukmini will give you plenty of inspiration for one tray family cooking of which I am a huge fan.

Recently, I was kindly invited to Meta HQ to meet with Instagram and talk about the need to take a break. I was joined by the brilliant Tara Hopkins, Head of Public Policy at Instagram, Nigel Clarke, Cbeebies presenter, and Zoe Baille, deputy CEO of The Mix.

In this podcast episode, we discuss Instagram’s new supervision tools and how we can make better use of our time. If you have any questions or comments, please do get in touch, info@mybaba.com.

About the episode's guests * Tara Hopkins: Tara is the Head of Public Policy, EMEA, at Instagram, overseeing government policy, legislation and regulation for the platform. She previously managed EU public affairs for the NSPCC. * Nigel Clarke: Cbeebies presenter Nigel is father to two teenage children. He is also host of the Dadvengers blog and recently launched podcast, a community designed to support fatherhood. * Zoe Bailie: Zoe is the deputy CEO/Chief Development Officer of The Mix, the UK's leading digital support charity for under 25s and Governor at a school in Hackney, London. She is passionate about co-producing services with young people and using digital as a force for good, especially to support young people's mental wellbeing.

Podcast Show Notes We’re always thinking about how we can help keep Instagram a safe and positive experience for teens, which includes helping protect them from unwanted contact, and making sure they feel good about the time they spend on the app. We have a team of 40,000 dedicated to safety on Facebook and Instagram and work closely with expert partners including The Mix and Parentzone to develop our policies.

Under 18s are automatically defaulted into a private account when they sign up, and adults can’t message under 18s who don’t follow them. We’ve also developed anti-bullying features like Hidden Words, which filters abusive comments and messages so you never have to see them, and comment warnings to encourage people to think twice before posting something that could be hurtful.

We launched Take A Break, to empower people to make informed decisions about how they’re spending their time. If someone has been scrolling for an extended period, they will be notified to take a break from Instagram and suggest that they set reminders to take more breaks in the future, as well as sharing expert-backed tips to help them reflect and reset. Early test results show that once teens set the reminders, more than 90% of them keep them on.

And most recently, we launched our new parental supervision tools, giving parents and teens more control over their experience on our app. The tools allow parents to:

  • Initiate supervision of their teen’s account
  • Set daily limits for how long their teen can spend on Instagram
  • Schedule breaks for specific times
  • See who their teen follows and who follows them
  • See more information when their teen shares they’ve reported something

Instagram's NEW Supervision Tools As well as focusing on removing harmful content and preventing negative experiences, Instagram also believe it’s important to try and encourage positive ones and has developed several features designed to promote positivity:

  • Comment warnings: Instagram uses AI to identify comments that could be hurtful, and encourage people to rethink before posting it. Research from the company found that in a given week, these warnings were shown about a million times per day on average. About 50% of the time after seeing these warnings, the comment was edited or deleted by the user.
  • Pinned Comments: This feature allows you to choose a positive comment under your post and ‘pin it’ so it stays at the top of your comment thread, setting the tone for others to follow.
  • Hiding like counts: Everyone on Instagram now has the option to hide like counts on posts in their Feed, and on their own posts. This way people can focus on sharing what they love, rather than how many likes they get. Read more here.

For those who do encounter negativity on social media, The Mix is the UK's leading digital charity for under 25s and can provide resources to both teens and parents alike on navigating trolls, cyberbullying and more.

Today we are chatting with Cliff Weitzman, an American entrepreneur, and the brains and the energy behind the amazing app Speechify, a mobile and desktop text to speech voice system. Cliff was diagnosed with dyslexia aged 9 and describes it as ‘the best day of his life,’ after experiencing so many struggles and hurdles with reading previously. At the time, there were no apps like Speechify to help Cliff with his reading difficulties, so he taught himself to hack computer programs to read his textbooks.

Cliff landed himself at Brown University where he taught himself to code on the side. He is now a Google Student Ambassador, and a dyslexic advocate. In 2017 Cliff was named in Forbes Magazine's 30 under 30. Cliff has turned Speechify into an incredibly user-friendly app that’s great for anyone

"I was absolutely inspired by Cliff's story, he basically put himself through Brown University and has grown his team from 1 to over 80 and he is not even 30 years old!" says Leo. "In this podcast, Cliff talks about how to support your children with dyslexia or any other different learnings. We discuss which books to download and ultimately how to succeed when the odds are stacked against you."

I have to admit I was a bit nervous speaking to award-winning aesthetic nurse Anna today. I am 39 and I have got lots of little lines cropping up on my forehead but I am resisting temptation.

The podcast was filmed on Zoom and the first thing I noticed was how incredible and glowing Anna’s skin was. I, however, had been caught out on a rare, sunny April morning and was bright red and more wrinkled than normal. We had a great time talking about everything from the perfect skin regime to sensitive skin, exfoliation and SPF. We went on to talk about retinol, Profilo, Botox and fillers and ended with her desert island products. I hope you enjoy our chat as much as I did.

Like me, she is a firm believer in a routine right from the start. A baby's routine doesn’t have to be rigid but it does has to be a routine that works for you and your family. Lisa shares her top tips, which include how to introduce a bottle to a breastfeeding baby and how having a routine doesn’t mean that you can’t go out for a day with friends. Our podcast on baby routine includes discussion about different ages and stages, with Lisa confirming that it’s not just down to luck when you have a baby that sleeps well.

For more information check out her website and follow Lisa on Instagram @blissfulbabyexpert1.

We talk about everything from childhood illnesses, chickenpox and measles to if it's actually possible to be too sterile in the home. Sam Barclay is a graphic designer, photographer and author of the book ‘I Wonder What it’s Like to be Dyslexic’.

Dyslexia is a subject very close to my heart, both my husband and I are dyslexic and have unsurprisingly passed it on to our children. This book absolutely gripped me from page one, mainly because Sam isn’t a dyslexic specialist but he is, himself, dyslexic.

His book makes it really easy for people to understand what it’s like to have dyslexia and in particular, what the difficulties associated with reading.

I was delighted to welcome Sam to the podcast to talk through what it’s like to be dyslexic.

We touched on everything from graphics and typeface to the creativity and communication skills that many people with dyslexia have. There are so many resources for the subject, but ones that I particularly like are Helen Arkyll Dyslexia Centre, Do it Profiler.com, and Crested.org.uk.

I’ll leave you with my favourite dyslexia quote from one of the most famous dyslexics, Albert Einstein. “Everybody is a genius but if you judge a fish by its ability to climb a tree, it will live its whole life believing it is stupid.”

**The new TV series of Fireman Sam, from Monday 26th October at 7am & 4pm on Cartoonito** We're joined in the hot seat this week by the one, the only Fireman Sam.

Fireman Sam joins us ahead of Bonfire Night to share his tips on encouraging young children to understand the importance of fire safety at this time of year.

With the majority of organised firework displays cancelled this year, Fireman Sam is on the case to ensure that our pets, kids and hedgehogs are kept safe on 5th November while some families choose to celebrate in their own back gardens.

  • Fireworks are exciting but they can be very dangerous. Listen to your grown-up about where is a safe place to stand
  • Keep your sparkly sparkler safely away from other people and don’t run with them
  • Wear your gloves when you hold sparklers and keep them away from your body
  • Once sparklers are finished, put them into a bucket of water, don’t pick them back up
  • Make sure you wrap up warm and don’t wear dressing up clothes
  • Stand at a safe distance from where fireworks are being let off and stay close to the grown ups
  • Don’t be tempted to throw anything into a bonfire or poke at it with sticks
  • Be guided by your grown up this Bonfire Night and don’t play in an area where fireworks are being let off.

Amy Forbes-Robertson is co-founder of It Happens Education, the organisation set up to provide educational workshops on relationships and sex education.

They work with a range of ages and stages across the UK. Whether it’s puberty or pornography, sexting or STIs, contraception or consent, festivals or freshers week you’re worried about, It Happens Education is a great place to start. I listened to Amy at a sex and relationship seminar last year and immediately asked her to come on the podcast. She made the whole subject matter so easy and unembarrassing and I read her book cover to cover the day it landed on my desk. This is a must-read book for any parent.

Bio: Amy Forbes Robertson Over the last 15 years, Amy Forbes-Robertson (BA, MPhil, PGCE, QTS) has worked in Education. During this time, Amy has interacted with young people and their parents, carers and teachers; as a volunteer, a project leader, a community outreach worker, in youth work, as a school governor and as a secondary-school classroom teacher (KS3 & KS4).

Amy is also responsible for running the Beacons Project at The Hay Literature Festival. Furthermore, Amy has worked as an accredited trainer for Cambridge Assessment International Examinations delivering teacher training both in the UK and abroad.

Working alongside Alex Fryer, (formerly www.alexandrafryer.com), a nurse and medical practitioner. They have formed www.ithappens.education. Alex and Amy deliver gentle and age-appropriate messages about Relationships, Sex & Health Education (RSHE). Moreover, they provide friendly and accurate information answering the many questions young people have about bodies, babies, birth, puberty, body image, confidentiality, masturbation, pornography, pleasure, sexting, delaying the onset of sexual activity, healthy relationships, LGBTQ+ issues, consent, STIS, contraception, festivals, gap years and university. They pride themselves on honesty and a good sense of humour, and their 'straight-talking' has been well received by over 200 schools. They now have 4 speakers delivering their work in schools across the whole country. Amy is increasingly being asked to speak at educational conferences and the teacher-training element of the business is blossoming as Statutory RSE approaches.

It Happens Education LLP also worked closely with ‘The Sex Education Forum’ on their 2019 ‘Countdown to Statutory RSE Conference’, as well as contributing to current research projects gleaning student opinions on Relationships and Sex Education. More recently, Alex and Amy have been carrying out advisory and consultancy work in television & media exploring the history of Sex Education in society with Spelthorne Community TV. 3 of these programmes; ‘Let’s talk about Sex’, were shown on Channel 4 early in 2019 and were very well-received. Currently ‘It Happens’ is developing a strong connection with some of the big names in UK Events & Festivals and using their platform to increase knowledge and information around the party-scene so that young people are more informed and able to understand the sex/substances and ‘harm-reduction’ conversation.

Through her years of experience, Amy intrinsically understands the lives of children and teenagers lives. She has been closely involved in pastoral care and safeguarding issues and is familiar with the challenges that young people face as they experiment with their own identity, friendships and relationships.

Amy supports the view that providing young people with good information is vital. She believes that talking honestly about bodies, relationships, sex and their recreational lives is essential. Only then can we enable young people to feel more confident, make more-informed and safer choice...

"This month I was so happy to speak with Joanna Jensen, founder Childs Farm and consultant dermatologist, Dr Jennifer Crawley. It seemed very apt to be talking-to them during National Eczema Week.

I had so many questions for these two from how to look after a baby’s skin all the way up to tween issues and sun damage throughout the ages. I have been using Childs Farm products on my children from day one, and I love the story behind the brand. Joanna is an absolute inspiration to women, and I always call on her for anything skin related.

During the pandemic, my hands have taken a real battering and that was one of the main reasons along with it being National Eczema week that I wanted to pick her brains. I hope you find this podcast as interesting as I did. Do feel free to share it on the school run." Leonora Bamford, founder of My Baba.
