Kate built four highly successful businesses in less than ten years, with revenues that ranged from six to eight figures. She started these businesses from the ground up with no funding in various industries.
Her first venture was an e-commerce business that started with only $20. Within a year, she grew this business to over a million dollars in revenue and over 15 million in online sales.
Kate did not limit her success there; instead, she kept going. One of her true passions is to help people have healthier, beautiful skin. This led her to open a spa that served a diverse clientele. From a small room of 100 square feet, OC Facial Center became a premier location for exceptional service. Her beautiful spa went on to receive the recognition of being in Inc 5000 list of the fastest-growing private companies in America, not only once but twice.
Integrating her ability to create exceptionally successful businesses and her desire to help, Kate created a community on Clubhouse from 0 to 100,000 entrepreneurs globally in just ten months. To date, Kate has impacted over 8 million entrepreneurs. She has produced the longest-running virtual summit in the world that ran for 85 days 24/7.

EPISODE NOTES Today's Guest: Andrew Rossow
Andrew Rossow is a licensed and full-time practicing attorney, adjunct law professor, Web3 journalist, media consultant, and anti-bullying activist.
After graduating from The University of Dayton School of Law and passing the Ohio Bar Exam, Rossow broke the barriers between Hollywood and Silicon Valley by creating #CYBERBYTE™, the industry's second anti-bullying movement designed to teach consumers about the dangers of online bullying, through PSA's. Notable figures, including, but not limited to Chris Hansen (NBCs Catch a Predator), Brian Cuban (Mark Cuban's brother), and Jennifer Cohen (Nike), among many other actresses, musicians, and entrepreneurs, have joined.
When Pokémon Go came out for the smartphone, Rossow wrote the very first legal thesis outlining the dangers AR-mobile gaming brought to consumers, using Pokémon Go as a case study. The article went viral throughout the legal community, opening the doors to media journalism when Arianna Huffington personally reached out to Rossow, inviting him to join HuffPost as a legal contributor.
Six months later, he was contacted by Forbes to begin writing for their new digital money section, now known as Forbes Crypto. Since, Rossow has gone on to write for numerous media outlets, including, but not limited to The Today Show (Parenting Team), Bloomberg Law, AboveTheLaw, ABA For Law Students, Bitcoin Magazine, CoinTelegraph, and HackerNoon. He has been featured on Cheddar TV, ABC, FOX, NBC, and CBS affiliate networks throughout the U.S.

In this podcast, Karim Nurani welcomes successful day trader, Cameron Newell and discusses the emotional connection of investing, managing multiple portfolios, market volatility, and long-term strategies for inventor success.
In this podcast, we explore four major themes:
Multiple Portfolios
In public market trading, it's useful to keep portfolios separate, so that different strategies can be consistently applied. Having three accounts seems quite manageable. Use one for ongoing dynamic day trading activity, and a second one for swing trading, where various disciplined buy/sell rules and analytics can be applied. The third account is for a long-term portfolio, where buy-and-hold strategies can be applied over months or years.
Embrace Volatility
A lot of volatility in stock prices creates a lot of opportunities, which in turn creates a lot of potential profit. But a lot of time and energy needs to be spent learning about these stocks, and constantly monitoring them, because they're the ones where the gains - and losses - happen the quickest.
FOMO And Emotions
It's important to understand that size is an important piece of trading. The more money that investors feel they're missing out on, the more likely they'll react emotionally. No matter how hard one tries, larger exposures are always going to provoke that little bit extra emotion.
Long-Term Vision
The key for successful long-term trading is to learn a lot about the company and the employees, and figure out where they're headed. People often say the market prices itself six months ahead of time. So, long-term investors need to truly believe in the company's vision and its future path. it's not just about where they're at right now.

In this podcast, Karim Nurani welcomes Sujoy Sarkar, Head of Corporate Development at BYTON along with Christopher Han, General Partner, and Nick Kinports, Managing Principal of Grant Barco Capital to discuss The consumer-packaged-goods (CPG) industry and how it is a very timely sector for venture investing.
Discussion Includes
The consumer-packaged goods (CPG) industry is a very timely sector for venture investing because the direct-to-consumer model of distribution has lagged behind in the food and beverage sector, compared to other startup businesses.
Grant Barto Capital is a new VC firm in CPG. It acts like a startup accelerator, where a key focus is enabling new companies to reach key networks of distributors and retailers. It's important to be aware that you never really own your methods of sales or customers.
Companies rely heavily upon distributors to create brand awareness and build market share. Even companies using e-commerce channels have to put in a lot of effort to build brands in the direct-to-consumer model. The VC firm still finds it necessary to help companies build the links to do warehousing, distribution, fulfillment, etc.
Grant Barto is running a VC fund, not managing a portfolio company's marketing process directly. But distributors and retailers can only consider four or five new sales pitch ideas in a day, so they'll tend to work with the people that they are already comfortable with. This is where the VC fund's close links with the CPG distribution network come into play.
The typical portfolio CPG company in their portfolio has been in business for two to five years. The exit strategy is generally to purchase by large food and beverage conglomerates like Anheuser-Busch, Coca-Cola, Unilever, etc. which are constantly seeking out new products and markets.
Listen up on June 22 at GIC for a hint about a major new product launch, which Grant Barto has waiting in the wings.

In Part 2 of this podcast, host Karim Nurani welcomes back Co-Founder of the Honest Impact Fund Natalia Olson to discuss Fraud Traceability, Disrupting the Status Quo, Citizen Engagement, Quantum Computing, and a New Privacy Economy
In this podcast, we explore six major themes:
Fraud Traceability
During the Obama administration, the Department of Justice funded blockchain projects to enable fraud traceability. Part of the financial aid to Central American countries included blockchain applications to identify real estate transactions related to narco-trafficking. The technology was used to identify the rightful owners and convert the transfers into digital contracts.
Disrupting the Status Quo
When we have new industries and new ways of doing things, I think that disrupting the status quo is a good thing. Disrupting is what we have done in the US for the last 50, 70, 100 years. We need to keep going the same way. We wouldn't have innovation if we didn't break the mold and create new molds and get more inputs from more people. It happens a lot when there's a division of voices from the community.
Citizen Engagement
One of the reasons why I enjoy this democratization is because of the citizen engagement. As urban planners, we cannot just go and design something without citizen input. A plan for a particular bridge might work for an engineer or urban designer, but it might not be in the best interests of the citizens who know that community, or that city or neighborhood.
Quantum Computing
For the new technology infrastructure to properly support blockchain and digital assets, we will need quantum computing and edge computing just because of the processing demands to enable efficiency. For example, Nodle is an IoT company that connects devices within cities to support much more efficient processing.
Traceability and Logistics
Easy access to traceability data for products is important, if we want to know what was the climate impact of distribution, or if a food product is organic. Being able to track from farm to table is all about logistics and supply chains. This has all become much more visible during the pandemic.
A New Privacy Economy
It's become more important to be able to shield our persona, so to speak. I think that the GDPR in Europe is working, but it's a little too much overreach, unfortunately. In the US, it's more about allowing companies to grow; let's not over-regulate them, and we'll figure it out later. However, we do have to start looking at what I call the new privacy. Just as we created the sharing economy, I think we now need to build the privacy economy.

Over the last few months, we've entered a new era in Washington DC, as the new administration takes over and re-emphasizes the key role of innovation and entrepreneurship in the US economy. After the financial meltdown in 2008-2009, the Office of Science and Technology Policy involved technologists in the task of recovering from the recession. It's important that we re-energize those links and find ways to address today's challenges more effectively.
Government and Entrepreneurs
How do we get government and entrepreneurs to better communicate with each other? Congress needs to understand that things have moved on in the last decade or more, and people now have more voice, through technologies like blockchain for example. The infrastructure bill is coming into play, and its role in promoting technical advances is going to be crucial, both within the US and around the globe.
Leapfrogging Infrastructure Deployments
US government research investments over the decades produced the internet, space communications, autonomous vehicles, and so on. In particular, the internet-enabled other places to get new systems and services in place, as we'd already made the big research investments. Leading-edge US work enabled many economies to leapfrog several technology advances in their infrastructure deployments, such as in Estonia and South Africa, for example.
Global Technology Advances
But some of that US research is pretty old now, and many recent technology advances have been taking place outside US government circles. The exploratory work on blockchain and cryptocurrency in Argentina comes to mind. China continues to out-invest us; at this point, they're talking about testing experimental 7G comms systems. In another direction, the EU tends to overanalyze systems, being particularly conscious of privacy issues, for example. In the case of GDPR, it was seen as being too hard policy-wise for the US to deploy it, so we decided to let the EU do the heavy lifting there.

In this podcast, Karim Nurani welcomes venture investors Kai Chen and Diana Adachi of True North Impact Investments to talk about measuring ESG impact investing, how diversity leads to better decisions, cryptocurrencies, digital assets, and the importance of transparency in impact reporting.
In this podcast, we explore five major themes:
Diversity Leads to Better Decisions
In negotiating ESG (Environmental, Social and Corporate Governance) investment commitments, a significant amount of impact value can be left on the table. The policies of True North Impact Investments are focused on identifying how ESG tenets are factored into a company's decision-making. Diversity at corporate executive and board levels leads to more responsible business strategies throughout the organization. Of particular importance is California's new AB979 legislation, which mandates minority and diversity representation on large corporate boards by the end of 2021.
M*easuring ESG Impact Investing*
Some people believe that companies using ESG policies do not provide good financial returns. This is incorrect. It's important to measure ESG performance and demonstrate the impacts that policies actually have. The equities trading algorithm used by True North tracks 13 technical indicators and balances risk vs return vs impact. For example, the algorithm provides the ability to determine a portfolio's overall carbon footprint as a fractional ownership percentage of the investment position. Thus, the quarterly carbon footprint of one's holdings can be compared with that of the overall sector.
Cryptocurrencies and Digital Assets
A primary concern in this field is the level of energy consumption. The location of the blockchain servers and miners is important. Also, SolarCoin offers rewards solar electricity generators with an energy-referenced cryptocurrency, as an incentive to promote energy efficiency. Cambiatus is another global digital assets initiative, where individual leaders' ESG values and community commitments play key roles in investment decision-making.
Transparency in Impact Reporting
It's important for progressive companies to be radically transparent in impact reporting. Too often, too many impact reports are written for the environment in-crowd, not the corporate decision-makers and investors. However, ESG company boards are more responsible long-term strategy-minded. and investors will have similar features and are a bit distinct to regular investors. If the board, executives, investors, are aligned on ESG issues, that predicts more stability and, in turn, a more successful business venture.
Corporate Behavioral Analytics
The True North Venture Fund recognizes that ESG-responsible businesses behave differently in the market than their traditional counterparts. The fund uses AI and behavioral analytics to identify promising ventures in the health and wellness sector. In addition to predicting the business impact for each dollar invested, another KPI (key performance indicator) for the fund is the ESG impact for the next incremental dollar invested

In this podcast, Karim Nurani welcomes back Arnold Hur the Chief Operations Officer and Co-President of Gen.G, the highly successful professional esports team and event company. In part 2 of this conversation, Arnold talks about uneven access to esports platforms, global 5G networks and their effect on mobile gaming, and cultural barriers, diversity, and gender equality in gaming.
In this podcast, we explore three major themes:
Uneven Access to Esports Platforms
The ability to get involved with esports differs across the globe. The cost of entry is unaffordable for many, with PS5s priced at $700 and fast internet connections out of reach for most. In Korea. most of the players are not well off. Their families can't afford elite after-school academic improvement programs, which enables game enthusiasts to gather in LAN cafes where, for $2/3/hour, they have access to the high-end PCs and fast networks needed to hone their esports skills.
Global 5G Networks and Mobile Gaming
In contrast, in the US, LAN cafe culture never took off widely, and so direct access to esports is more common among upper middle-class kids, who can afford the necessary equipment and network connectivity. Expanded mobile gaming and access to 5G networks are changes that will make it possible for more esports uptake among less well-off communities globally, especially in India, Africa, and Latin America.
Cultural Barriers, Diversity, and Gender Equality
Esports has started to help break down cultural barriers. but not as much as one would expect or hope for. Game servers are predominantly regional or locally-based, because of network speed and performance issues. So the player communities tend to be more homogeneous. Gen-G Esports is pushing for more gender equality in gaming. The company has started all-women teams in Fortnite and Valorant, and is promoting friendly tournaments and community scrims among female teams. It has also funded the new foundation to expand access and diversity in the gaming community, while also encouraging academic excellence at the same time.
About Our Guest:
Arnold Hur is the Chief Operations Officer and Co-President of Gen.G, the highly successful professional esports team and event company.
He is a serial entrepreneur who specializes in the growth of early-stage startups. He joined Gen.G shortly after it was founded in 2017, and initiated the rapid expansion of the company through acquisitions of professional teams in several esports franchises, including Heroes of the Storm and League of Legends.
Under Hur’s leadership, Gen.G has continued growing by further acquisitions, as well as building its own rosters of players and coaches, including one of the first all-female teams for Fortnite. By December 2020, the company had become the sixth most valuable esports organization in the world, with an estimated valuation of $185M.
Hur attributes much of Gen.G’s success to a close collaboration between the United States and S. Korea, which combines the skills and dedication of Korean esports culture with the investment prowess and global reach of California's Silicon Valley.
Prior to joining Gen.G, Hur was President of Memebox, a multi-brand beauty and personal care e-commerce venture headquartered in San Francisco. Like Gen.G, Memebox leverages the latest innovations in Korean trends and popular culture. During his time at Memebox, the company raised over $160M in funding from numerous prominent early-stage Silicon Valley VC firms and family offices.
After graduating from Boston College with a degree in finance, Hur worked with Goldman Sachs and Boston Consulting Group, before heading west to Silicon Valley to work in new product strategy and business development for Google.

In this podcast, Karim Nurani welcomes Arnold Hur the Chief Operations Officer and Co-President of Gen.G, the highly successful professional esports team and event company. In part 1 of this conversation, Arnold gives insights into company growth strategies, successful career paths, and the value of learning from failures.
In this podcast, we explore three major themes:
Speed Toward Failure
The experience you learn from failure in business is an important element for success. But you need to fail quickly - that is, speed towards failure! It doesn't work if you're trying too hard not to fail; don't over-think things too much. Remember that failures almost always produce specific elements or features that become useful later, like the need to do quality user research and get into the minds of your customers.
Game Character Careers
As you expand your career, each job experience gives you more insight into being a startup entrepreneur. For example, you start to understand how decisions are made in large organizations, which is a useful skill, no matter whether you're competing with a big corporation or trying to be bought by one. Don't get caught up with titles and reporting structures. Regard each job as a transition, where moving gives you momentum and helps you gain the confidence to grow things. Think of yourself as a game character with special abilities that let you transform into any other character and acquire their powers and skills.
Understand the Effects of Growth
You can solve a lot with money as you build a large company, but beware of raising too much funding. The more money you have, the less fun the job becomes. As the CEO, you can stay on top of everything yourself with up to about fifty people. After that, you really need to focus on getting the right processes and people on board, ensuring that you have a good product-market fit, etc. At around 150 people, you'll be adding the rocket fuel, and then you'll hit the next growth curve and stuff is going to break. At this stage, internal politics can start emerging, so it's important to know how to create an ethical and truthful culture, so ensure that you have a team that can put all the key core processes in place.

In part 2 of this podcast, Karim Nurani welcomes back Joshua Fairfield of Washington and Lee University School of Law. Professor Fairfield is an internationally recognized law and technology scholar, who specializes in all things digital. His current research focuses on big data privacy protection, cryptocurrencies, and the development of virtual communities to maximize people's potentials and achievements.
In his latest book, Runaway Technology, Prof. Fairfield demonstrates how we can create the kind of laws that are better suited to dealing with the challenges and dangers posed by corporate surveillance, artificial intelligence, deep fakes, genetic modification, automation, and more.
In this podcast, we explore two major themes:
Law and Technological Change
It's a mistake to claim that the law can't keep up with rapidly-changing technology. Law itself is “linguistic technology”, and the key strategy is to ensure that it evolves “wisely” to stay apace of the latest developments. It's important to look at the lessons from legal history, to see how they should apply today. In feudal times for example, serfs (peasants) couldn't own their farmland and would lose everything when disputes arose among their overlords. Today, we're becoming “digital serfs” since we can't own our own data, and are subject to licenses and terms of service that are imposed by the “digital barons” who rule us.
NFTs and Tech's Democratizing Pedigrees
The evolution of different governmental implementations of technology legislation across the globe is of concern, especially given the worrying expansion of authoritarian nationalism worldwide. This can be countered by decentralized finance and blockchain technologies, which have strong democratizing pedigrees that don't lend themselves easily to centralized command and control. The laws relating to NFTs will need to evolve, in order to make them practical and shovel-ready for use in everyday commerce, and that will happen.
About Our Guest:
Prof. Joshua Fairfield is an internationally recognized law and technology scholar, who specializes in all things digital.
He has written extensively on what he terms “the crisis of digital ownership”, raising the alarm on technology’s annexation of our property and privacy rights, as we risk becoming digital peasants who are owned by software and advertising companies, not to mention overreaching governmental agencies. His latest research focuses on the regulatory oversight of e-commerce and online contracts and the next generation of legal applications for cryptocurrencies.
In his most recent book, “Runaway Technology: Can Law Keep Up?”, Prof. Fairfield calls the bluff of Silicon Valley’s barons and mandarins who claim that the law can never support the pace of rampant technological change. On the contrary, he says, the law can certainly keep up and stay the course, precisely because it is a type of technology - a carefully specified social system constructed by humans out of cooperative fictions like firms, nations, and money.
The ongoing tension between technology designers and lawyers can perhaps be attributed to the fact that they are both tasked with precisely defining how the world is to work, but they use radically different languages to do it. The engineering nuances of Python and VHDL are balanced by the legal precision of pronominal adverbs like whereof and thereafter, and arcane terms of art like promissory estoppel and ceteris paribus.
Joshua is well-placed to straddle the gulf between these two disciplines, having been a software technology entrepreneur in the language-learning field before taking up the law. He has used his unique synthesizing skills to advise the US government on policy matters of digital national security, online civil liberties, and global research ethics for virtual communities.
Prof. Fairfield studied at Swarthmore College and the University of Chicago Law School, and for the last fourteen years has been on the faculty of Washington and Lee University School of Law.

In this podcast, we explore two major themes: Law and LanguageLaw is a constantly-evolving language-generating process; it progresses by creating new languages to determine how we will cooperate to solve the problems of the future.
The IP industry offers a transitional case in point. IP regulators tried to manage copyright violations for digital artifacts by determining that you should only license them, not own them. But at the same time, there were exploding markups in payments for unique in-game objects, which totally overwhelmed the legal frameworks. Blockchain technology and NFTs are resolving most of those difficulties.
Language and Gaming
Gaming is a really great linguistic environment, because it establishes a strong context for people to use language. If you want to learn a new language, try playing the role of an in-game healer on a foreign language game platform. Healers are the characters who have to keep track of what's going on all over the place, and they need to be able to explain it to everyone. It’s an excellent way to experience in-context learning! Investing in Blockchain Platforms Can Lead to Multi-dimensional Wealth
What are Blockchain and Bitcoin? How does this impact, Impact investing? The first question often arises even though they have been around for over 10 years when Satoshi Nakamoto introduced Bitcoin in 2008 to address the double-spend issue in payments. Blockchain is open-source software that essentially is a unique type of database. Bitcoin is a digital asset known as a cryptocurrency that uses Blockchain - think the internet of value. What makes blockchain unique is the encrypted data written to blocks that are transparent, immutable, and audit-able. This is confusing to many, as Bitcoin and Blockchain are thought to be synonymous.
In this episode of the Global Investor Podcast Blockchain expert, Diana Adachi joins host Karim Nurani to discuss Impact Investing and its relation to Blockchain and Bitcoin.
