This is TwoGether: An Ada Bible Marriage podcast. Our hosts, Dr. Kelly Bonewell and Samuel Jones provide a glimpse into the world of their lives while giving practical and biblically based help from their countless experiences of helping couples prepare for, invest in, and enhance their marriages.
In our final episode of the season, Rachel, Andy and Kelly shared about their experience in taking the Better Love marriage assessment. We go over the different aspects of the assessment as well as talk about our own results and shared what it got right about our marriages. We end the episode by talking with Rachel about her role at Ada Bible Church as our Director of Women's Ministry and her vision for the ministry. Because of her responsibilities, sadly, Rachel has to step down as a host, but we are so thankful for her two years of being on the TwoGether team!
Here is a link to where you can find more information on the assessment: https://www.betterlove.com/
Rachel and Kelly invited back to the podcast, Caiti and Austin Moore to give us an update on their journey as a couple and family. In the previous episode they were on in 2022, they vulnerably shared about their infertility journey. In this episode, we had an amazing update in how they were able to adopt twin boys. They shared what that journey was like and have lots of wisdom to share with those who maybe are in a similar situation with adoption.
For the previous episode from 2022 that Caiti and Austin did, you can find it here: https://rss.com/podcasts/adabiblemarriages/608231/
We had the privilege of talking with Dan Seaborn, who leads Winning at Home. Samuel and Kelly with Dan had an engaging conversation about bringing us back to the basics of what a healthy marriage looks like from a biblical standpoint. Specifically, they talked about some of the false ideas our culture may have about marriage and how we can look at marriage through a biblical lens. For more information about the counseling practice of Winning at Home, you can find it at this link: https://winningathome.com
In the episode we mentioned that Dan had spoken at our Recourage event and you can find those links below.

When men support each other, what kind of positive impacts can happen in marriages and families? In Episode 6 of this season, Andy invites Men’s Ministry Pastors Ethan Cole (Ada Bible Cascade Campus) and Vic Willis (Ada Bible Kentwood Campus) to the podcast to discuss the impacts and support men can find in a ministry setting.
You’ll learn more about the importance of supportive spaces for men, Ada Bible Church’s Men’s Ministry program, and how that ministry is working to support men and improve marriages in our church.
Conflict is normal in a marriage, but how we engage in it can have either positive or devastating consequences. Today Samuel and Kelly invite back fan-favorite Matt DeHoog to talk about the Drama Triangle, a relational paradigm in which we can shift between three roles, Persecutor, Rescuer, and Victim, all held in place by guilt and blame. This an episode that you might want to have a notebook handy, because we talk about these dysfunctional dynamics that can pop up in your relationship or marriage and we share how you can fix them.
Today we invited the counselor Peter DeHaan to talk about all the different ways he does marriage counseling. This was a valuable conversation in which Peter shares about motivational interviewing, working with couples with addictions, and some other facets of his ways in working with couples. A really important segment of the episode was when Peter addressed the stages of change - this was helpful when thinking about our own relationships and how we can make them better.
Both Sarah and Ryan are key leaders in our Thrive and Lifeline ministries and we get to hear their powerful marriage story. Starting out as high school sweethearts, they thought they had it all until the challenging aspects of life caught up to them. By staying committed and getting help, they were able to rebuild their marriage. A key marking point for them was saying yes to a relationship with God and learning about the blessing of serving others. This is a must listen!
Co-dependence is a term used a lot today, but what is the difference between a connected couple and a co-dependent one? In this episode, Andy sits down with author, speaker, and pastor John Eklund to dive into the intricacies of co-dependency, how to identify it, and some tips on avoiding it in your marriage. You’ll enjoy John’s engaging stories while he breaks down this complex topic.
It's a new season of TwoGether! One of our favorite things to do when we interview couples is that we ask each of them to share on the episode what they love about their spouse. This has been a powerful way to end each episode and each of the couples walk away blessed to do this exercise. In this episode, the team highlights some ways in which you can do this on a regular basis and we give you specific ideas in how you can give your husband or wife the gift of your words.
What a privilege it was to interview Pastor Jeff and Chris Manion for our final episode this season. This was one of the more vulnerable interviews we have had with a couple. Jeff and Chris share some of the challenges they have faced and things they have learned in their 40 years of marriage and ministry. There is much to take away from this episode so make sure to have something handy to take notes.
In this fun episode, Andy, along with his wife Esther, got to sit down with co-host Cori and her husband Collin. The Olsson’s discuss enjoying the process of getting to know one another during their 6 year courtship before tying the knot. They share lessons they have learned along the way and give some great tips on fighting more effectively. You’ll enjoy this couple’s story and get to know one of our TwoGether hosts.
They say opposites attract, but what does that really mean for a marriage? Join Andy as he and Nance Robson, local marriage counselor, explore the differences of an introvert and extrovert within the context of marriage. You will follow the story of Alex and Kristin Trovert, a fictional couple who represents the many couples both Nance and Andy have worked with in counseling. It's a conversation that may help you understand some of the dynamics in your marriage.
What a great episode - we brought in former clients of Kelly to discuss the impact counseling has had on their individual stories as well as their marriage. In this episode, Kelly and Andy had the pleasure of speaking with Eric and Lisa Miller, a couple with a great love story. You’ll get to hear about how they found each other, the ways they have grown as a couple, and how their identity in Christ has helped their marriage thrive.
A new segment that will be offered on the Twogether podcast are interviews with marriage counselors in our community. We will ask how each counselor works with couples, with the goal of making you familiar with the amazing counselors we have in our community and which one may be a good fit for you. Today, our own Samuel Jones will be sharing with us how he approaches marriage counseling.
You can find the contact info for Samuel if you would like to schedule an appointment at www.theprinciplething.com.

A key aspect of the TwoGether podcast is that we interview couples and want to dive deep into learning more about their stories. By doing these interviews, there is much for us to learn from others that can make our marriages better and it's why we believe it is the cornerstone of our podcast. Today, Rachel, Andy, Kelly and Cori have a discussion of how we can learn a lot from couples in how they navigate their marriages and we highlight some of the past episodes in what we learned from the different couples we have interviewed on the podcast.

The McMurray's have stepped into a new season that could elicit chaos and disunity, where instead they find stability and openness. Pastor Parris and Fallon along with Samuel and Cori dive into the world of what it looks like to shepherd their church, work other jobs, parent, and the day in-and-day-outs of marriage. We’ll explore the new season of ministry that Pastor Parris and Fallon entered into and how they were able to do so based on practices they established early in their relationship. You’ll hear their story of how they fell in love and the tools they use in their marriage that have helped to navigate massive life change and maintain a healthy and love-centered marriage.

Today Rachel, Samuel and Kelly opened up our first episode of season six and shared what a few of their favorite episodes were from Season Five. We had different themes in our fifth season and two were personality differences and adoption. We also had a surprise for our listeners at the end - it's an episode you don't want to miss.
What an amazing final episode of the season! Rachel and Kelly interviewed our Cascade campus pastor, Kyle Pierpont and his wife, Elizabeth. Two key aspects that they shared were their dating challenges and their very different personalities. It's a powerful episode you won't want to miss.
We brought in Matt DeHoog to talk to us about how your personality impacts your life and marriage. By looking at the DiSC personality assessment, we can have a better understanding of how God designed us and this also helps us to relate to others better. We had a rich conversation on these topics and you might want to take notes as we go over a lot of different dynamics as it relates to personality.

This is a three part series, where Kelly and Samuel look at the importance of a healthy relationship with God and how it can positively impact your marriage. A relationship with God must start with deep commitment - he must be the most important thing in your life. If we get this right, all of our other relationships can be healthy and balanced, especially our marriages.
However, sometimes we can get stuck in our relationship with God and we will explore different stages of faith. The Bible illustrates for us three different types of relationships with God that we can have: being a believer, being a servant, or best, being his friend. In this episode, we round out the series by looking closely at how you can have a friendship with God - the healthiest way to be in relationship with him. We offer key takeaways that you can implement in your life and draw closer to him, and hopefully, which will also positively impact your marriage.

Using the person of Peter, we look at how we can get stuck in our faith by being legalistic and have false ideas about God. Here we give some insight into how you can have a grace and truth-oriented relationship with Jesus.

When it comes to marriage issues, the top three areas are conflict resolution, finances and sex. We had an engaging conversation with counselor Sarah Eastway on topics surrounding all things sex and marriage. We discussed what are the healthy elements of a sexual relationship. We also took a look at how couples can have conversations about their sexual relationship, especially if they are struggling in this area. We ended the show by having Sarah share practical information on how you can strengthen your sexual relationship in your marriage.

Forgiveness is one of the hardest communication tools in marriage. It requires two parties with two different points of views to admit that someone may have been the recipient of pain or hurt. Have you been there?
Samuel and Kelly share a biblical context on how forgiveness can be uncovered to help your marriage thrive in good and bad.

We all know communication is hard work. In this episode, Samuel and Dr. Kelly share how to enact active listening as well as practice skills that help couples survive high conflict situations. Today Samuel and Kelly did a quick look at the essentials of a mentoring meeting. Those elements would include 1) Listening, 2) Information and biblical wisdom, 3) homework and accountability and 4) Prayer. During the podcast, we talked about an important book entitled The Unexpected Legacy of Divorce by Judith Wallerstein. This excerpt is from the publisher:
In this compelling, thought-provoking book, Judith Wallerstein explains that, while children do learn to cope with divorce, it in fact takes its greatest toll in adulthood, when the sons and daughters of divorced parents embark on romantic relationships of their own. Wallerstein sensitively illustrates how children of divorce often feel that their relationships are doomed, seek to avoid conflict, and fear commitment. Failure in their loving relationships often seems to them preordained, even when things are going smoothly. As Wallerstein checks in on the adults she first encountered as youngsters more than twenty-five years ago, she finds that their experiences mesh with those of the millions of other children of divorce, who will find themselves on every page.
