Is speaking at a virtual summit something that’s on your radar? If so, what’s your reason behind that? I want y’all to think about this: Are you saying yes because you're happy that you got asked? Or is it because you have little speaking experience and this is a good opportunity for you? Virtual summits are a great testing and training ground, but there are some things to consider before you give the host your “yes!”

What does it mean to “practice” your message? I've had women tell me that they want their message to be fresh, so they don’t do a lot of practicing. Well, I'm going to be honest with y'all: You can share a message that sounds fresh and still be well practiced. Practice doesn't mean rehearsing your message word-for-word. There's an art to delivering your message, and practicing is all about the way in which you use your words.

Perhaps you have been sharing the same message for a year and need a new fresh message. Whether you've done this hundreds of times before or are just getting started, I'm going to share the way I craft a message. I follow a three-step process centered around 3 P's. When someone asks you to speak at an event, do you hesitate to say yes? Do you automatically think that someone else is more qualified to speak than you are? Both myself and my guest, Lori Robertson have been there. We understand how easy it is to think, “Who am I to speak about that topic? What if I say the wrong thing?” But do you know what? In the end, that way of thinking comes down to two things: Having too much fear and too little confidence.

When I say “conversion”, what do I mean? Conversion means turning a connection and a conversation into a booked speaking opportunity. If you tuned in to the first two parts of these keys to getting booked to speak, you’ll already know all about making connections and having conversations. If you haven't listened to those episodes yet, please go back and do so. Now, let me ask you: How do you take the first two C's – connections and conversations – and move them into conversions? That’s exactly what we're going to discuss today, so keep listening.
During this episode, I share how to convert a conversation into a paid speaking engagement.

Did you catch the last episode where we talked about making connections? If not, I highly recommend you check it out first because there’s some homework that lays the groundwork for this episode! Getting booked as a speaker starts with making connections. After making those connections, you can start having conversations and scheduling meetings. I know, booking meetings can be nerve-wracking even for speakers. That's why I want to spend some time discussing what you can expect going into these conversations, so keep listening…
In this episode, I talk about face-to-face meetings, video meetings and how to show up and serve well in both situations.

Have you been calling up churches pitching yourself to speak and nobody’s returning your phone calls? Let me ask you this: if it’s not your church, do any members of the staff or congregation know who you are? Back in the day, cold pitching worked a lot better. Nowadays, anyone can send an email to a women's ministry director, and that's exactly what happens. Since so many unsolicited emails from unknown speakers land in their inbox, getting a meeting is becoming harder. But if you make a genuine connection, you stand a better chance of getting your foot in the door.

What do you consider a BIG stage? How many people are in the room? Is it 100, 500, 3,000? Whatever you consider to be "big,” when God calls you to it, you'll feel right at home. You won't feel lost, you'll know you're exactly where you’re supposed to be. Even if your name is the least known on that poster, you’ll still know that you are meant to be there.

How do you know if your message is ready for the spotlight? That depends on what you mean by “spotlight.” Is it getting a lot of attention or publicity? Or taking the big stage for the first time? My definition of the word is stepping onto any stage at any time. To ensure you’re prepared for the spotlight, no matter how big or small, let's talk about knowing if your message is ready.

Is standing up on the big stage all you want to do? Do you want to start off your career speaking up there and become well-known in that big space? It's probably on your list of goals to get noticed up there right away, but that's not always possible. And let me tell you, it's a blessing! There have been times (I’m talking very few) where new speakers have walked onto the big stage without any preparation and failed miserably. To learn how to handle yourself onstage, it’s best to start small.

Have you ever noticed the same speakers keep showing up at large Christian conferences or women's events? "Yeah, Mary… why is that?" I know what you're thinking. How are YOU ever going to get on that big stage if you're always seeing the same speakers there? In my experience, there are three reasons for booking the same names over and over. “Mary, why am I not getting booked to speak?” Well, let me ask you a question: Have you asked anyone to book you? Would you get a degree or certificate and then expect to get a job without applying anywhere? Would you sit at home all waiting for the phone to ring with job offers? "When you put it that way, Mary, it just sounds silly…” Maybe so, but it’s the truth. I want you to think about getting booked to speak, like getting a job, so keep listening to find out more about what that looks like.

Have you ever witnessed someone sharing their hard story before they truly processed their pain? Did it seem like they were just coming across like they were angry with everyone involved in their story? Was watching their pain a painful experience for you? When you share your difficult story while you're still grieving, it can be messy for everyone. There is a difference between telling a story and telling a hard story. That difference is timing.

You may wonder, “Mary, what exactly does it mean to step up into your message?” Well, it all comes down to the call that God has placed on your life. Maybe that makes you nervous. Maybe you don't feel confident enough to stand up and talk about what God is doing in your life. And you know what? That's okay because your confidence comes from your calling, not yourself. Today on Take The Stage, Jenny Randle joins me again, and we dive into some excuses that speakers may have, and we’ll talk about her new book that launched today, Dream Come True.
Jenny Randle is an Emmy®-award winning editor who went on a journey to discover what it really means to live on purpose. From a career in the heart of Hollywood editing for billion-dollar franchises to a faith-based leader, her voice and work have been featured in hundreds of notable films, print, and media outlets, including MGM Studios, DreamWorks, and PBS Television.
In early 2018, Jenny and her husband, Matt, formed Freedom Creatives, an organization that helps people grow their faith, get unstuck, and level up so they can unapologetically live and work for Jesus. Freedom Creatives provides classes, coaching, and in-person and online community and events. Their ministry has international reach from a small island in Northern Florida, where they reside with their two children.
Jenny's search for meaning in the everyday moments of life has led her to develop resources that merge profound Gospel-centered truths with practical application. She's the co-host of the fun and faith-filled podcast — Shut the Should Up. Jenny is the author of Courageous Creative, Getting to Know God's Voice, and her newest book, Dream Come True: A Practical Guide to Pursue the Adventures God Has for You. Jenny champions leaders, creatives, and procrastinating dreamers to dream on for the glory of God and good of others.
Be sure to tune in as Jenny and I talk through some speakers' excuses that she covers in her book. And make sure you stay until the end because Jenny turns the tables and asks me a question.
"If I didn't feel nervous, I would be worried because then I wouldn't have to rely on God. So it's that reminder that this whole thing isn't about us. " - Jenny Randle.

Jenny Randle joins me on today's episode, and y'all, I couldn't be more thrilled. Jenny is an Emmy® award-winning editor who became a national speaker, faith-based author, and podcaster.
During the highlight of her career, she remembers feeling a calling from God. Then, being paralyzed for a decade from lack of understanding of what it even looked like.
"And then finally I had this like come to Jesus breakdown moment where I really felt in my Spirit. The Holy Spirit was like, "The question isn't who you are? The question is, who am I?"
Join me as Jenny and I discuss:
• When did God call Jenny, and what did she do about it? (1:31)
• Where does the question, "Who are you?" come from? (4:25)
• She was doing a job she loved but was being called. (6:26)
• Jenny's journey to gaining confidence as a speaker (7:35)
• Did Jenny leave the media industry? (12:01)
• What does Jenny do, and how does she serve creatives? (14:00)
• "Getting to Know God's Voice" (14:47)
• Jenny's purpose to glorify God and to help others (16:44)
• She created a quiz to "help give you language for whatever is stifling you" (18:07)
• Weirdest URL that Jenny and Mary own (19:29)
• If Jenny could go back and the first couple of times she spoke, she would tell herself this. (22:24)
• What is the one message that Jenny wants to deliver to people listening (24:03)
Wasn't this was such a fun episode today with Jenny? I can't wait to take her quiz, get her book and have her back on the show! I appreciate you being here today, and I want to hear how you will get to know God's voice!

Today's episode, I'm going to be completely transparent with y’all, has been more complicated than I thought it would be. We will cover humor in our message, and to be honest, I thought it would be easy! I've found that explaining humor is impossible.
What makes people laugh? If y’all shrugged your shoulders, you are not alone! Even people with big degrees, all the letters after their name, don't know why we laugh at what we do. Our opinions of what is funny are going to be different because of our life experiences.
"Humor is something that God has given us to connect to our people."

There are a couple of different steps to take in finding an event planner. One is to ask the people you know who they know. Who do they know that books events? Who do you know that is in charge of their women's church events? Check out the episode listed below to hear all about finding an event planner.

In this episode, we cover the next step to Take the Stage, storytelling and your message! In May, we covered: What to Wear on the Stage, Does a Speaker Need a Website, Going Public as a Speaker, Getting Booked, and Developing Your Message. But what is your message? In this episode, we are going to discover your story.
If you've been here for a minute, you know that I like to teach speakers to open with something that captures your audience's attention, captivates your audience with the story, and closes with the application.
"The moral of the story is to use a story in your storytelling. It makes a difference. It matters. It moves people to action, and it makes you as the storyteller more memorable."

You are called to be a speaker, and it's time to let the world know. It's time to share your message that is placed on your heart!

What to wear on stage -- now this is a topic that requires you embrace your personal style.
I'm here to give you tips on what works well on the stage, but you have to decide what looks the best and feels the best for you.
Let your personality shine in what you wear. However, if you are a wear black for all occasions kind of speaker, then I'm encouraging you to branch out. Black outfits on a dark stage can make you look like a floating head.
Here are a fews what to wear that works well:
Above all - be you!
You are perfect just the way you are.
Jenn Whitmer, Enneagram coach is back again to share more about the enneagram heart triad today.
If you missed the first episode, find it here and episode two is here.
Today it's our heart triad -- enneagram types five, six and seven.
Type Five -- the thinkers and observers. They are the ones who will walk you through every graph and table. They are thorough. For the fives it's important to remember that not everyone has done the amount of research as you. So as you prepare to speak, be ready to give a bit of the backstory but don't overwhelm your audience with details.
Type Six -- the loyal guardian. Sixes are always ready. And they use self-deprecating humor to connect to the audience. As a speaker who is a type Six, remember to have confidence in your calling, More than any other number, Sixes can struggle in this area.
Type Seven - the enthusiast. This is the life of the party speaker. Sevens are natural communicators but the challenge for this type is they are more spontaneous and can struggle with rehearsal.
So there we have it -- the three part series on the enneagram and your speaking style.

Part 2 of Enneagram and Your Speaking style.
Jenn Whitmer, Enneagram coach is back again to share more about the enneagram heart triad today.
If you missed the first episode, find it here
Enneagram Twos are our first type and they are warm people who love to shepherd their audience along. They lean into the connection with the audience. The challenge for the Two is balancing the warm, caring with details and facts. Twos act on emotion and adding facts to their talks will enable them to reach more.
Enneagram Threes are motivational speakers at heart and are excellent at reading the room. They know when to lift the room up and when to bring it down a notch. The Threes don't find it easy to share failures and can focus only on their successes -- which makes it difficult for an audience to connect.
Enneagram Fours are our romantics -- and where the Threes tend to gloss over failure, the Fours will share all their failures. The Fours show us how to handle disappointment and tragedy. The challenge for the Fours is to move out of the failure and into the next phase.
That's our Heart Triad -- next week is our final part to the series, the Head triad. Join me and Jenn as we talk about types 5,6 and 7.

Step onto the stage in the confidence that God has called you to this moment.
Stage presence is a combination of how you use your voice, facial expressions and body language to connect & engage with your audience.
The first moments are stage are key to connecting with your audience. Listen to Episode 31: Creating an Irresistible Opening for these tips.
Move with purpose -- use your movements to emphasize & underscore your message. Don't roam or pace the stage. You can step closer to your audience to make a strong point. Lean in.
Smile -- engage with your audience by making eye contact. Look at each section of the room.
Practice your message -- this enables you to sound confident. Practice until you know your message inside and out, backward and forward. When you know your message this well you can focus more on the audience and less on what is your next point.
Confidence -- knowing your message allows you to be confident in your delivery -- and when this comes together, your face reflects this assurance. You look and sound like the expert you are.
Check out Episode 10: Calling over Confidence for more on this.
Having great stage presence comes with skill and practice. You have a message to share -- one God has given you. Practicing how to have capture and hold your audience is key to connecting with the audience and sharing your message.
Join our Facebook Group
Stepping onto the stage you have moments to capture your audience.
Creating an irresistible is the way to capture and hold your audience's attention.
Your audience has endless distraction and entertainment in their hands. Your job is craft an opening that is so compelling the audience will put down their phone and lean in.
As you step onto the stage -- pause. Not a long pause, just a beat or two. Breathe -- you'll find you are holding your breath as you step out, don't worry this is normal.
Smile -- let your audience know you are here for them.
Launch -- directly into your story. Not the back story or the set up -- the middle of the story.
Drop them into the action. Capture their attention with your story.
Your job is to deliver your message in a way that connects with the audience. Remember there is someone sitting in that room that needs to hear this. Craft an opening that will hold her attention.

Contracts or, as I like to call them, Speaker Agreements, are a necessary part of doing business. Don't leave this to chance --even if you are speaking for free (because you gifted your fee and go back to episode 7 What to Charge for more on this).
What goes in your speaker agreement?
Let's break it down:
Agreement
Name and address of venue
Date and time of event
Name and contact information of the event planner
Event DetailsDate and time of my presentation or presentations
Allotted speaking time
Dress code -- I always ask this to avoid being way under or over dressed
Technical -- this is where you would put screen for presentation (if you need one), slideshow clicker, etc
Microphone preference -- handheld, lapel, or over the ear
Podium of table request
FinancialsSpeaker fee
Travel - will the host book your airfare & lodging or will you handle this ?
Transportation -- how will you get from the airport to the hotel and then to the venue
Deposit -- typical is 50%
Cancelation policy -- I have a 90 day cancelation policy, If the event cancels before the 90 days, I return the deposit.
Remember a speaker agreement is to remind you and the host event of all you have each agreed to -- and I like to over communicate all I need and ask the event planner to do the same. If she wants me to attend a dinner the night of the event -- put it in the agreement so I make sure that is on my calendar. Over communication creates clear expectation.
Create a speaker agreement that allows you to meet and exceed the needs of your event planner.
𝗪𝗮𝗹𝗸 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴
Whoa -- that's a statement that reminds me that I'm called by God to serve His people. This isn't about me.
And being a speaker, that's not about you. It's about the calling God has placed on your life.
What are you doing to walk about that calling? Are you talking with the Lord about your calling?
Let's look at the scripture passage I reference at the beginning :
Therefore I, the prisoner in the Lord, urge you to walk worthy of the calling you have received, with all humility and gentleness, with patience, bearing with one another in love, making every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit through the bond of peace.Ephesians 4:1-3 CSB
I love this passage of scripture in The Message version
“𝘞𝘩𝘪𝘭𝘦 𝘐’𝘮 𝘭𝘰𝘤𝘬𝘦𝘥 𝘶𝘱 𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦, 𝘢 𝘱𝘳𝘪𝘴𝘰𝘯𝘦𝘳 𝘧𝘰𝘳 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘔𝘢𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘳, 𝘐 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘵𝘰 𝘨𝘦𝘵 𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘵𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘸𝘢𝘭𝘬—𝘣𝘦𝘵𝘵𝘦𝘳 𝘺𝘦𝘵, 𝘳𝘶𝘯!—𝘰𝘯 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘳𝘰𝘢𝘥 𝘎𝘰𝘥 𝘤𝘢𝘭𝘭𝘦𝘥 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘵𝘰 𝘵𝘳𝘢𝘷𝘦𝘭. 𝘐 𝘥𝘰𝘯’𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘺 𝘰𝘧 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘴𝘪𝘵𝘵𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘢𝘳𝘰𝘶𝘯𝘥 𝘰𝘯 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳 𝘩𝘢𝘯𝘥𝘴. 𝘐 𝘥𝘰𝘯’𝘵 𝘸𝘢𝘯𝘵 𝘢𝘯𝘺𝘰𝘯𝘦 𝘴𝘵𝘳𝘰𝘭𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘰𝘧𝘧, 𝘥𝘰𝘸𝘯 𝘴𝘰𝘮𝘦 𝘱𝘢𝘵𝘩 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘨𝘰𝘦𝘴 𝘯𝘰𝘸𝘩𝘦𝘳𝘦. 𝘈𝘯𝘥 𝘮𝘢𝘳𝘬 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘺𝘰𝘶 𝘥𝘰 𝘵𝘩𝘪𝘴 𝘸𝘪𝘵𝘩 𝘩𝘶𝘮𝘪𝘭𝘪𝘵𝘺 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘥𝘪𝘴𝘤𝘪𝘱𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘦—𝘯𝘰𝘵 𝘪𝘯 𝘧𝘪𝘵𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘴𝘵𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘴, 𝘣𝘶𝘵 𝘴𝘵𝘦𝘢𝘥𝘪𝘭𝘺, 𝘱𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘺𝘰𝘶𝘳𝘴𝘦𝘭𝘷𝘦𝘴 𝘰𝘶𝘵....”
Ephesians 4:1-3 MSG
Let's agree that we both need to RUN down the road God has called us to.
Take the next step that God has put before you -- maybe that's working on your message or practicing how to deliver your message. Maybe it's finding 20 churches to connect with.
Remember there is a person who needs your message - she has a need and God is equipping you to fill that need.
I want to walk worthy of my calling and I want the same for you. Let’s hold one another accountable to this.
What one thing will you do today to walk out your calling?
Are you ready to Activate Your Speaking Career? the 12 week live training program begins April 12 -- it's a small group, so if you want in, sign up soon!!

(You'll find a list of great resources here - episode 21)
Now, it's time to create a video that captures the event planner's attention. Consider these four opening tactics:
Imagine -- use the word imagine to bring your audience into the message and to capture their attention.
What if -- as a What If question to pose a thought provoking idea. This grabs the audience's attention and gets them wondering where you are heading.
Question - Open with a question that gets the audience's attention.
Story - no backstory, no set up, you launch directly into the story. Much like the imagine technique, using story as an opening brings the audience into the story with you.
Below are links to some great openings -- study these and then craft the opening that fits your message and sets you up for success.
Ric Elias - the Imagine technique
Simon Sinek - opening with a question (actually several questions).
Scott Dinsmore - opening with story

Why a one sheet? Do you really need one? Is it required?
These are the questions I hear when I talk about a speaker one sheet.
I believe that as a speaker you need a one page document to share with event planners -- it can be a pdf you attach to an email or a page on your website. Either one works.
Elements of a one sheet.
Remember first and foremost, the one sheet is about what you bring to the audience.
Picture of you -- the real you. Now, I'm not saying that you roll out of bed and snap a pic. We still want to put effort into the photo, but let it showcase you and your personality.
About you - the biography section. This is where you showcase your skills. Show the event planner why you are the person to help her audience.
Topic or topics - showcase your signature message or messages. Keep the focus on the audience and the problem your message solves.
Social proof - combination of testimonials from people who can speak to your skills and information on notable places you've spoken. Do not worry, if you don't have much experience, that just mean you have to be more creative (not deceptive). Have you led Bible study? Ask one of the attendees for a review. Have you presented in a business setting? Ask for a statement.
Contact information - seems obvious, but I do like to state the obvious.
Your one sheet is your foot in the door -- create it to showcase how you can serve the audience and you'll get noticed.

"Be interruptible by God." These words from Mary DeMuth struck me in the heart. How often do I get so FOCUSED on the goal that I forget who CALLED me to this service? Am I making room for the Holy Spirit to move and change my direction?

Where do you want to speak? I know, it's a question that we, as speakers, often forgot to ask this question.
We wait until we're asked to speak.
You are a speaker with a God-given message and you have to let the event planners know you are available and ready to share with their audience.
Once you've identified the where you want to speak, it's time to find out who books the speakers. Put on your detective hat and get to work. It may be as easy and calling up the host church and asking or it may take some research to figure it out. Google, Facebook events and Instagram are great places to start. Put in the event name and a year - -like this "Pink Impact 2017." You can find groups, events and pages -- dive in and see what you can learn.
Once you've identified the where and the who, it's time to connect the dots.
Do your best to get on the phone with the event planner or an admin for the event or the church. Ask questions, find out who attends, learn about past speakers, and create a connection.

Tammy shares her journey from middle school teacher to full time speaker and her first event that she created.
This event was almost taken under by a hurricane when her venue became a Red Cross location for evacuees. But in true Tammy style, she just leaned in and put on her event for attendees and the evacuees. Tammy had a small local audience in mind – God had something bigger.

Being a standout virtual speaker doesn’t require high end equipment, but it does require a few good tools, new skills and a lot of practice.
Microphone - a lapel mic will give you the freedom to back away from the computer and use some body language to communicate.

QIYA Ring light - this desktop, smaller version ring light is great for small spaces and comes with a remote. Fun feature

Camera - laptop cameras are not known for being outstanding. Here are a few of the best in various price ranges:

AverMedia 1080p Webcam - a great mid range webcam

“You have nothing to prove.” Words of wisdom from Holley Gerth. As speakers, we often believe that every request to speak should be answered with ‘yes.’ And that's not always the case. Holley shared wisdom on this topic “I'm not less than when I choose to do less.”
I know that right now you're saying to me “Mary, I just want to get some offers to speak!” And I know how that feels – I remember those days of planting the seeds, making the calls and sending out the emails and then the WAITING & WAITING!
As you wait, see where can you serve. Another great idea from Holley, as she suggests that you build a network based on serving. Is there an event that has a page you can help with? Is there a fellow speaker who is just a bit farther along the journey and needs some people to help with her book launch?

Are you a speaker trying to figure out what an event planner is looking for?
Listen in to Jan Greenwood and learn the keys to catching the attention of an event planner.
Live your message
This is just one of the nuggets of wisdom that Jan shares with us. Jan Greenwood is a humble leader who has scouted and booked some of the the most influential speakers on our time. She was a key member of the Gateway Church, Pink Impact team and above all else, a follower of Jesus.
Her definition of grace my be my favorite ever --
Grace is not just favor, the grace of God is defined enablement of God to do whatever He has called you to do.
Jan shares her insight into how to begin a speaking career and how to grow that career.
Her wisdom of 'start with what's in your hand and trust God" is one that we should all take to heart.
I encourage all speakers to listen very closely to what she shares about how she scouted for new speakers.
"Fruit of their life and connection. Will this speaker connect with my audience. "
Jan shares on what upcoming speakers can be doing:
Your online profile matters -- this is where event planners are looking.
Use what you have and practice & live your message.
On working with event planners:
Be responsive and timely
the event planner is your friend and wants you to succeed.
consider your wardrobe --ask your event planner what is acceptable.
Remember, you are a guest.
Trust NOT in your capacity but in God's anointing

When will live events return? I don't have the date or the time -- but I do know this, Live Events WILL RETURN.
Live events have been a part of the human experience since God created man. We have always gathered together to experience messages, music, poetry, and performances. While the pandemic has made it hard (and in some cases impossible) to gather and we've moved to virtual, the in person events will return. They may look different -- fewer people in larger rooms and a host of other safety measures, but they will return.
What does that mean for you as a speaker? It means get ready! It means, get to work. It means, you have to let the world know you're ready to share your message.
As you get ready to get to work? Start today. Identify 20 events / churches in a 150 radius and pick up the phone and call. Find out who books speakers. Take the time to ask the questions about the attendees -- understand how you can serve that audience. This research is the first step in getting your speaking calendar booked.
Today I'm answering your questions on a variety of topics:
Dave asks about how he can create video to share with event bookers if he's not doing live events.
Facebook Live, Instagram Live, YouTube -- these are all great places to showcase your speaking topics and talent.
LeeAnn asks about building an email list -- and while I'm a HUGE proponent of building an email list and I think every speaker should be doing this, I'm not the expert in this space but I know who is-- check out Amy Porterfield and Jenna Kutcher.
We dive deep into a question about overcoming failure and what that looks like.
This is an episode from you -- my listeners. And I want to do more of this -- if you have a question on speaking, head over to TaketheStagePodcast.com and send me an email or if you want to send me an audio of your question, then go here to share your question.
Suzie Eller is a writer who speaks.
Suzie was speaking for years before she truly believed she was a speaker -- today she refers to herself as a communicator.
She shares a story of tossing her speaking notes into a trashcan just before she stepped onto the stage.... Whoa -- that's a big leap. But those notes kept her from connecting with her audience. Notes gone and Suzie's personality was able to shine.
Suzie pours joy on all who come into her presence -- from the stage, through her writing or on her podcast (and don't miss out on her podcast - More than Small Talk!)
Suzie's wisdom and encouragement will challenge you to step out into your calling.

On today's show, I'm asking a lot of questions.
Where do you find your audience?
Who is she and where do you find her?
What does she consume and how does she consume the information?
What podcasts does she listen to?
What bible studies does she do?
What conference is she attending?
Where is on social media? what groups does she belong to?
What do you have in common with her?
What can you offer her? How can you take her on this journey?
How will you encourage her or equip her? Will you inspire her?
Lots of questions -- but these questions will help you find your audience.

Kathi's speaking career started out when she began sharing her freezer meal ideas with MOPs(Mothers of Preschoolers) groups. Funny, engaging, and entertaining, Kathi quickly became a favorite of MOPs groups all over Nothern Californian.
Kathi's come a long way from her days as the freezer meal mom, but she hasn't forgotten her beginnings. Kathi shares the need to show up authentically, be who you are and be humble.
Kathi talks about the need to know what type of speaker you are before you step on the stage -- and how important it is to trust the Holy Spirit to guide you as you speak.
Kathi shares that she never dreamed she would be a full-time speaker/ author/ coach. She encourages speakers to DREAM BIG!
"I had very limited dreams because I didn't factor God into my dreams -- alone I couldn't have accomplished this, but God did this in me."

"I'm an interrupter. I'm bringing a message the people attending didn't intend to hear."
Shaun Groves is a speaker -- and a unique speaker.
His path to speaking life began as a singer/ songwriter in Nashville. Shaun had a career in the music industry. He wrote and performed music on stages across the country and was an award-winning, chart-topping musician until 15 years ago when he flipped the switch on his career. He went from singer/ songwriter to speaker.
But what didn't change -- Shaun is a master communicator whether he's speaking from a stage or playing music.
When Shaun moved from music to speaking his primary goal as a speaker was to get children sponsored. And 15 years later, he is the master storyteller of Compassion International -- now, he would never say that, but I can.
Shaun shared what he has learned through the years as he's moved from a passionate speaker to a persuasive speaker. "I wanted people to care about something immediately."
Shaun worked to understand his audience and to grow as a storyteller. He studied the craft of storytelling.
Shaun shared some of the basics of storytelling -- "people remember the beginning and the end. You can move the story around to make it more impactful -- you can start in the middle. you can start at the end."
He suggests that you write your story out on cards and then move the cards around to determine what works the best for your message.
"Listen to great storytellers."

Do you remember Chewbacca Mom? Four minutes of pure joy on Facebook live over four years ago. The woman with the infectious laugh is Candace Payne.
Candace joins me and shares how, just a few weeks before the video went viral, she stepped out in faith and onto a stage and told her story at a conference.
It was on that stage Candace she felt like she finally belonged. "I knew this is what I'm supposed to be doing. "I didn't even know how to do it -- number one, I've never been told I could, or that I should and I've never been allowed."
I knew that this was what I wanted to do with my life.
Just a few weeks later -- the video goes viral.
Candace shares about serving in a variety of areas of ministry -- from worship leader to creative planner -- but she never felt like she was a good fit for any of these areas.
But she served -- in all manner of areas.
We talk about her speaking style, which Candace refers to as an echo chamber of what God is saying to her. She shares how she is intentional to serve the audience who sits before her -- and she leans into God to serve them well.
Fluff has to go -- 'break our addiction to recreation' and we have avoided the hard topics for so long. Speakers are called to encourage, strengthen, and comfort those she serves.

I want to let you in on a secret -- I'm not always confident when I step onto a stage or click on a microphone. I know that I'm called to share a message but I'm not always confident when I'm sharing that message. And that's okay. I am ALWAYS confident in my calling.
You will not always be confident but you should always be confident in your calling. God has uniquely equipped you with a message only you can deliver. Yes, only you. Even if you have a message that closely resembles another speaker's message -- you have unique relationships, experiences, and opportunities that make your message unique.
Your calling trumps your confidence. You are called to deliver your God-given message to the people God's places in your path. Keep your eyes open and move forward in your calling.
Now the goal of our instruction is love that comes from a pure heart, a good conscience, and a sincere faith. 1 Timothy 1:5
Hold on to the pattern of sound teaching that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus. Guard, through the Holy Spirit who lives in us, that good thing entrusted to you. 2 Timothy 1:13-14
Proclaim the message; persist in it whether convenient or not; rebuke, correct, and encourage with great patience and teaching. 2 Timothy 4:2
But as for you, be serious about everything, endure hardship, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry 2 Timothy 4:5

"My whole career has been to take the next step."
My conversation with Jonathan Merritt is one you do NOT want to miss. Jonathan's insight into calling and what that means is thought-provoking and inspiring. When he talked about being called to be a writer -- not a published writer, it was an Ah-ha moment for me. We are all called to be obedient to God -- we are not called to an end result (such as a published book, a specific platform, a successful business). We are called. End of statement. No qualifier. No additional words needed. Called. It's who you are.
"Speaking is an act of compassion. I'm showing up because I believe what I have to say will help you in some way."
How beautiful -- I wish I'd always been like Jonathan. I'm going to be honest, I've not shown up at every speaking event with that attitude. But how true is it -- if you are called to a specific audience then it's your responsibility to show up and care for those people who are listening, to love the people who will hear your message.
Love people. What a message for today and every day. Use your words wisely.
Love people.
By this, all people will know who you are.
Enjoy my conversation with Jonathan Merritt.
