Stan Wong is producing a documentary called "The Real American," which tells the story of Evan Thompson III - who, for 45 years, would wave a large American flag at low flying military airplanes as they passed over his house in the desert outside Las Vegas. Alongside the story of Evan, the film also features vignettes of A-10 pilot Chris Beckman, WW2 Navy sailor Doris Miller, and F-16 pilot Heather Penney. The Real American will be released this summer. You can watch the trailer at TheRealAmericanFilm.com.

Stan Wong made his first film "Lonely" in 2010 and immediately fell in love with the craft. He decided to dedicate more of his time to film, establishing his company, Infinite Fountain Productions llc., in 2014. Shooting commercials and short films for clients and other filmmakers, he learned everything he could about writing, directing and producing. Biding his time till he was confident that he could make a film that was compelling, interesting, paced well and with fully developed characters, "Departure" was written in 2014 with several rewrites and help from professional writers. It will be Stan's first feature film.

I address a YouTube video posted by MegaProjects that claims the "A-10 is worse than you think."  As an A-10 pilot with 14 years of experience, I can comfortably say I have more credibility here than MegaProjects. Unfortunately, the YouTube video was removed for copyright reasons, so I have to rely on memory. Still, the misinformation is common and needs to be corrected.

David Richards is a business professional, life coach, yoga instructor, and speaker on self-development. He spent his early childhood living in various parts of the United States and three years living on the island of Okinawa, Japan. After graduating university with a degree in English, he was commissioned an officer in the Marines. He served fifteen years on active duty before deciding to break out from the path his father and brother had followed in making the military a career and left the Marines to pursue life as a civilian.

He joined Cisco Systems in 2006 and shortly thereafter discovered yoga. A year later, he taught his first yoga class. Realizing the fulfillment that came from helping others see their vision more clearly, he became a certified life coach. He works with individuals and organizations conducting training through private coaching engagements, speaking events, and workshops.

Down to earth, insightful, and sometimes silly, he blends elements of yoga with quantum physics to bring the esoteric together with the practical for a truly unique perspective of how the mind works, in turn creating easily understood self-development plans that create lasting change for a more fulfilling life.

Rich Walton is author of One Brick at a Time: Winning the Hearts and Minds of the Afghan People. For more than four years, Rich Walton was a civilian contractor working on construction jobs in the Afghanistan war zone. His role included actively connecting with US and Afghan military and the heads of various coalition task forces.

In addition to working on military bases surrounded by protective walls, he worked outside the bases on schools, women’s dorms, medical clinics, and public structures being built in the Afghan villages. The Taliban and other terrorists did not want these structures built, so the dangers were very real and a constant threat.

His book will give you insights on how Rich Walton became an expert drumming up construction jobs and how creative business networking amidst sniper fire and terrorist attacks helped him succeed in business and make it out alive.

Some of his stories and photos will tug at your heart emotionally while others are unbelievably hilarious. Through these experiences, you will see how Rich Walton came to be known as The Face of America the Afghans will Remember.

In episode 57, Dr. Rocky Jedick told Greg about Moral Foundations Theory as a guide to find common ground with people who disagree with you.  That discussion was about vaccines.  But how does Moral Foundations Theory apply in other contexts?

What is Moral Foundations Theory?  Greg reviews the six foundations of the Moral Foundations Theory from Jonathan Haidt's book, The Righteous Mind.  He then applies each foundation to the issue of the Canadian truckers' "Freedom Convoy" and the recent ousting of members from a San Francisco school board.

The OSHA vaccinate-or-test mandate and the subsequent Supreme Court decision striking it down have significant consequences for federal power and individual liberty. The Left and Right are in two different galaxies in how they view the decision, and Greg bridges the gap. He reviews the history and philosophy underlying the Declaration of Independence and the US Constitution - specifically the different views on the relationship between God/Nature, the state, and the individual. He then explains how these views are reflected in 8 constitutional principles and various Supreme Court doctrines. With these concepts in mind, he leads you through the published OSHA opinion, helping you contextualize the dispute between Left and Right, and preparing you for future constitutional debates.

Air Force Senior Master Sergeant, retired, Bill Nutt was the intelligence analyst who planned and coordinated the rescue mission that picked up "Lone Survivor" Marcus Luttrell in Afghanistan in 2005.  Luttrell and approximately 20 of his fellow soldiers were shot down in a helicopter in the northeast of Afghanistan in 2005, and Luttrell was the only one to survive - largely through the efforts of a local Afghan family.  His story was captured (with some Hollywood edits) in the movie "Lone Survivor" in 2013.

Bill talks about his part in that incredible mission and his career in the Air Force.

Shield T3 has the most rapid and reliable Covid testing model in the country. A subsidiary of the University of Illinois, Shield T3 was organized to combat Covid-19 and get students back in school. Their program was so successful they decided to expand it to K-12 education and to private businesses around the country. Former CEO and current member of Shield T3, Laura Wand discusses her organization's mission, its impact, and its future in helping everyone get back to work.

From SHIELD T3:Driven by Innovation and Mission

The University of Illinois System received emergency use authorization (EUA #: EUA202555) on February 24th, 2021, from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for covidSHIELD, the innovative saliva-based COVID-19 test that was used on the U of I campuses to hold the virus in check by utilizing widespread testing with rapid results. Under FDA guidelines, the EUA allows the U of I System to broadly expand its covidSHIELD testing beyond its universities in all of the Shield T3 laboratories across the country.

We aim to:

Provide a quality test and testing system to curb the spread of the pandemicOffer a solution that is affordable enough to use at scale and safely reopen for private and public good

Background

We believe saliva to be the best medium to detect the virus. Our test bypasses the RNA-isolation step allowing for both lower costs and more rapid results without sacrificing accuracy. The saliva test from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign has been approved by the UIUC’s Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendments (CLIA)-certified lab director.

Results

The University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign has been administering this COVID-19 test on all students, faculty and staff since the spring of 2020, with outstanding results.

Justin is a disabled combat veteran who served as a Gunners Mate in the US Navy. Called "Pirate Hunter" by many, he is well known for gallantry in action during the 2010 pirate attack on the U.S.S. Ashland. His valiant efforts in defense of that ship helped our government obtain the first judicial conviction for piracy in over 200 years!

In December 2017, Justin began laying the ground work for a new company focused on developing the veteran community, which was suffering from an epidemic of suicide. A related mission was coaching non-veterans who were looking for meaning in their lives. In April 2018, Justin founded "Signs By Veterans," in order to teach veterans to provide high-quality and selfless service for their clients. Justin believes that generating purpose for veterans is a powerful way to decrease the number of suicides from the current 22 a day.

Justin is recognized throughout the industry as a leading expert and influencer. He has been featured in Signs of the Times and Sign Builder Magazine . He was nominated for Forbes 30Under30, selected as one of the 2021 Young Sign Makers by Sign Builder Illustrated, achieved top 3 finalist for Digital Output’s "International Sign Application of the Year" in 2017, and is a frequent guest on business and personal development-related podcasts.

Sam Silberberg was 10 years old when he was living with his family in Poland in 1939 and the Nazis invaded. Already enduring widespread anti-semitism, Jews in Poland were rounded up and shipped off to death camps by the thousands. Wit and grit enabled Sam to evade capture for many months while providing goods through underground markets to his fellow Jews. Eventually Sam was captured and worked as a slave in the Blechhammer concentration camp - a subcamp of Auschwitz - with his father. Toward the end of the war, Sam was able to escape and find his mother. Sam then moved to the newly created nation of Israel, which he also fought to defend, before moving to the United States in 1952. He remained quiet about his experience in the Holocaust for about 50 years, but then chose to open up and write his book, "From Hell to the Promised Land: a Boy's Daring Escape from a Nazi Concentration Camp," which you can buy on Amazon. Sam is now 92 and lives with his wife in southern California. He continues to educate people about the Holocaust, and many of his interviews can be found on YouTube.

Former Coast Guard officer and Harvard Law student Thomas "Buddy" Bardenwerper tells us about his upcoming book - Mona Passage - which comes out in November. The Mona Passage is a dangerous area of ocean between Puerto Rico and the Dominican Republic, through which drug traffickers and migrants attempt to pass in an effort to get to the United States.

Mona Passage is the story of two neighbors in San Juan, Puerto Rico: Galán Betances, a Cuban emigrant, and Pat McAllister, a young Coast Guard officer. During long evenings spent together talking on their Calle Luna rooftop, a deep friendship develops based on shared traumas and a common desire to heal. When Galán learns that his sister, Gabriela, is going to be committed to a mental health facility in Cuba, he plans her escape to Puerto Rico. Pat, whose Coast Guard cutter patrols the Mona Passage for drug traffickers and migrants, warns Galán that such a journey will be treacherous—perhaps fatal. Aware of the dangers but determined for Gabriela to live a full life, Galán hands over all the money he has to a Dominican smuggler based out of a San Juan nightclub, and Gabriela begins her terrifying journey. Knowing that his cutter may be all that separates Galán and Gabriela—and haunted by the human suffering he has witnessed at sea—Pat must decide. Will he remain true to his oath, as his older brother had done in Iraq? Or will he risk his own future—and perhaps his freedom—for his closest friend? On a moonless night, two armed vessels converge in the Mona Passage, and three lives change forever.

Thomas Bardenwerper is on Facebook, and he can be reached on Instagram and Twitter @tbardenwerper89

Dr. Scott Parazynski is a highly decorated physician, astronaut, and tech CEO, recently inducted into the US Astronaut Hall of Fame. He is a widely sought after keynote speaker on innovation, risk management, mentorship and leadership under extreme adversity.

Scott has lived and traveled all over the world, spending many of his grade school years in places such as Senegal, Lebanon, Iran and Greece. A graduate of Stanford University and Medical School, he went on to train at Harvard and in Denver for a career in emergency medicine and trauma.

In 1992 he was selected to join NASA’s Astronaut Corps and eventually flew 5 Space Shuttle missions and conducted 7 spacewalks. Mission highlights include a global ozone mapping flight; leading the first joint US-Russian spacewalk while docked to the Russian space station Mir; serving as Senator John Glenn’s crewmate and “personal physician”; and assembly of the Canadian-built space station robotic arm.

In October 2007, Scott led the spacewalking team on STS-120, during which he performed 4 EVAs. The final EVA is regarded by many as one of the most challenging and dangerous ever performed. The tremendous coordinated effort in orbit and on the ground by Mission Control has been likened to the Space Shuttle and Space Station era’s “Apollo 13 moment.”

In addition to being a diver and accomplished mountaineer, Scott is also a commercial, instrument, multiengine and seaplane-rated pilot. On May 20, 2009, he became the first astronaut to stand on top of the world, the summit of Mount Everest. As a life-long explorer, he and a colleague recently set the first bootprints adjacent the world’s youngest lava lake, inside the crater of Massaya Volcano in Nicaragua.

He is a prolific inventor/product developer, and serves on the Boards of several companies. He is Founder and CEO of Fluidity Technologies, focused on the development of revolutionary input devices powered by machine learning to intuitively move through physical and virtual space.

All Students Can Excel in New Directions (Ascend)

Ascend College Prep was founded by Air Force Academy graduate and instructor Karin McWhorter in June 2020 as a small private school offering math education, standardized test prep, and tutoring. At the end of the first semester, Karin’s 27 students encouraged her to find a way to broaden the scope of the school. The board of directors and the founding team are now working with the Education reEnvisioned BOCES (Board of Cooperative Education) to turn Ascend into a full public high school for 11-12 graders in Colorado Springs and the surrounding area.

“I love teaching math because understanding how to approach a problem, apply a framework and find a solution is a critical life skill. I feel strongly that EVERY student is capable of success in mathematics, and once you understand “why” something works, the “how” becomes much easier. I have worked in public education for nearly 20 years, and I think we can do better with respect to STEM literacy, critical thinking and overall preparedness for future endeavors.”
--Karin McWhorter

TD Barnes started in the US Army in the 1950s as a radar and intelligence officer. Because he had special skills in monitoring high-speed and high-altitude aircraft, NASA hired him to work on the X-15 - the aircraft flown by astronauts and test pilots prior to going into space. Because the US was trying to win the space race and monitor the Soviet Union, TD was then hired by the CIA to work on the A-12 Oxcart program at Area 51. The A-12 was the highest and fastest air-breathing aircraft in the world, but because it was Top Secret, its records are not official. The "official" records are currently held by its successor - the famous SR-71 Blackbird.

TD had a front row seat to the most highly classified programs in the US, and he directly participated in the most sensitive missions of the Cold War period. Now that his programs have been declassified, TD can tell the invaluable story of his fellow Cold Warriors to solidify their place in history.

TD heads Roadrunners Internationale - a group of former military, contractor, and CIA personnel - and he is the executive director of the Nevada Aerospace Hall of Fame. He can be reached at Area51SpecialProjects.com and at TD-Barnes.com

Melissa Rueschhoff is a Partner with Parlatore Law Group and has been practicing law for over two decades in nine jurisdictions.

Ms. Rueschhoff has spent much of her career working on behalf of special victims. As a Civil Litigator, she is passionate about not only stopping the sex trafficking of adults and children alike, but also holding businesses accountable that are apathetically catering to these networks. Ms. Rueschhoff’s legal career had been focused on Criminal Prosecution in Special Victim’s Units and, most recently, in combating child sex trafficking at home and abroad. In Hawaii, she was an Analyst / Special Prosecutor for the Hawaii Internet Crimes Against Children Unit in the Hawaii Attorney General’s Office and a Legislative Attorney for the Judiciary Chair in the Hawaii State Legislature.

Ms. Rueschhoff is a resource for groups seeking legislative/lobbying legal analysis across a broad spectrum. From cross-checking conflicts with existing laws, to pulling language from other states laws, to articulating key arguments to elected officials, to creating new and relevant legislation, she is eager to serve as counsel for lobbying and non-profit organizations seeking to make their communities a better place to live.

Previously, Ms. Rueschhoff directed Arizona’s first ever federally grant-funded DTAP (Drug Treatment Alternative to Prison) program, an experience she uses to help state agencies apply for federally funded grants. Her recent focus is to ensure uniformed officers have adequate training and resources available to recognize and help victims of sexual assault and trafficking in their communities.

In addition to practicing law, Ms. Rueschhoff has been a law professor at Faulkner University’s Jones School of Law, the University of Arizona’s Rogers College of Law, and the University of Hawaii’s Richardson School of Law. She is a Board Member for the Joint Venture Education Forum which brings together the Hawaii Department of Education and the five military branches represented on our islands. Additionally, she is on the Board of Directors and is the Community Relations Co-Chair for Ho’Ola Na Pua, the premier organization working with survivors of child sex abuse and trafficking. She has also been an invited guest speaker for Pacific Air Force command conferences at military bases, DOE schools, colleges and on national podcasts. Ms. Rueschhoff has been featured in Pacific Edge Women in Business as the first military spouse to become a licensed Hawaii attorney under the military spouse reciprocity rule and for her dedication to eradicating trafficking.

The premier Hawaii non-profit organization combating child sex trafficking, which is opening the first residential treatment facility in the Pacific for girls age 11-17 who are CSEC (commercially sexually exploited children), is Ho’Ola Na Pua at https://hoolanapua.org/.

The national hotline for anyone who might need help is VictimConnect Hotline at 1-855-4-VICTIM or https://victimconnect.org/resources/national-hotlines/, which includes domestic violence, sexual assault, human trafficking, child abuse, teen dating violence, etc.

As an F-15 pilot, Joel “Thor” Neeb escorted the U.S. President through the sky and flew missions to ensure the safety of the country after the attacks of 9/11. Currently, he is the leadership speaker and CEO of Afterburner - a business development company.

Thor is humbled to have had incredible experiences within the military and Afterburner, but he is most proud of the following accomplishments. In 2010, he was diagnosed with Stage IV cancer and given about a 15% chance to live. Instead of giving up, Thor developed what he calls "the survivor's obligation" and decided to give back. He started a youth outreach program in San Antonio that has grown to help more than 15,000 at-risk kids. Their efforts have been featured on every news channel for 100 miles and one national media outlet.

Thor completed the New Zealand Ironman Triathlon in March of 2015 to commemorate the five-year anniversary of his Stage IV cancer diagnosis and to raise awareness for the rare and deadly cancer that he battled.

Thor also sits on the board of several national organizations and is the co-founder of a military support corporation. As Afterburner’s CEO, Thor leads his team of more than 70 elite military professionals. He has helped achieve strategic objectives and foster elite teams for Fortune 100 companies within the tech industry, pharmaceuticals, finance, medical devices, retail apparel and several NFL teams.

"Strength in character, strength in judgement, strength in a sense of fair play. All of those things in a girl or a guy are exactly the same. So what I found in the job was it makes no difference as long as you decide in your soul that you are ready to line up and play just like the next guy." - Commander Cathy Taylor.  Cathy started her career in Los Angeles in the 1970s when women were brand new to the field. Her grit and tenacity enabled her to rise to the rank of Commander by the time she retired 30 years later.

"The more you invest in understanding what your options are, and where you might go for treatment, the better off you’re going to be in the long run. If I had known more early on, I wouldn’t have been as sick as I was. That’s why I share my story.” - Terry Evans. 20 years ago, Terry was diagnosed with Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia (CLL). He joined a small support group called the CLL Society and helped grow the group from 5 individuals in a living room to an international organization with 35 chapters throughout the US and Canada. Thankfully, CLL treatment has advanced tremendously. He is now cancer free and has seen the birth of 11 grandchildren. You can read more about Terry's CLL journey at terrysclljourney.blogspot.com.
