14: Have you ever understood the difference between situational and clinical depression? My guest, David Anderson, had no idea there were two different types until he was diagnosed with clinical depression. David always felt an underlying level of sadness but never really thought there was anything that abnormal. David chats to us today about his road to recovery and how his faith and religion made him feel a lot of shame because of his diagnosis. In David’s faith community, depression is often related to not having a strong enough relationship with God. So it took a lot of research and discovery for David to not feel like a failed Christian.

David is a multi-passionate writer of fiction and nonfiction. He has a Master’s of Theological Studies (MTS) and a Master of Theology (ThM) from Duke Divinity School, and a Master of Library and Information Science (MLIS) from the University of South Carolina. His book, Dark Nights of the Soul: Reflections on Faith and the Depressed Brain, won first place in the Writer’s Digest Self Published Ebook Awards, nonfiction category in 2019. His next project is a novel set in ancient Rome called Through Fear of Death.

In this episode we talk about:

  • Becoming an ordained minister
  • Getting diagnosed with clinical depression
  • The shame of being depressed as a Christian
  • David’s book Dark Nights of the Soul
  • How David’s faith affected his experience of depression
  • David’s principles for recovery
  • David’s advice for people who think they might be clinically depressed

13: Getting furloughed or laid off this year is a common theme for many of us. My guest, Sophia Lorena was impacted by this as well. During her 10-week furlough, Sophia created her own podcast and realized that there’s truly no such thing as job security. Between that and being in a car accident all in 6 months, Sophia really saw her life put in perspective and developed a “fuck it” theory where she decided to finally start going after everything she wanted in life and to stop playing small.

Sophia is the host of “The Shit Show of my Twenties” and has interviewed close to 100 people this year so far. She is a twenty year old from California, a personal development junkie, and her day job is as a loan officer.

In this episode we talk about:

  • Starting a podcast
  • The shame of getting furloughed or laid off during the pandemic
  • Being in a car accident
  • Life coaching and NLP
  • Creating a legacy
  • The fuck it theory
  • Unhealthy behaviour patterns and limiting beliefs
  • Binge eating disorder
  • Personal development
  • Creating a great relationship with your mom

But even further than that, usually excess weight is linked to a much deeper rooted issue. Today I chat with Shari Ware about her long journey of losing over 100 kgs of weight and how it wasn’t until she realized her weight was because of her limiting beliefs that she finally started making progress.

11: Divorce is one thing. But navigating a blended family dynamic with step siblings and new step parents can be extremely challenging. Joel Hawbaker is no stranger to this. As a child of divorce himself, and then finding himself divorced with two kids in his twenties, Joel had many struggles and ups and downs. Today, Joel is a blended family coach, an award-winning teacher, author, speaker, and frequent podcast guest who loves helping blended/stepfamilies overcome obstacles and grow by teaching them the 10 Commandments of Blended Family Life.
