What kind of team do you need to take your business to 7-figures per year or more?

Most coaches and course creators we speak to seem to hit a plateau once they get to 6-figures.

Ultimately, it comes down to the fact that they need a BIGGER (and better) team to have a more significant impact.

So, they go out and hire a friend or family member or even people from their community...only to find out that NONE of those people are qualified for the positions!

This leads to disputes, firings, and sometimes even the destruction of relationships - all because you didn’t take responsibility for hiring the RIGHT people for the job.

Does any or ALL of this sound familiar?

In this episode, I’m going to share the real struggle we had in hiring and training a team and how we ultimately failed TWICE before finally getting it “right.”

I’ll also show you our current process for hiring our team members and how we train them in a mostly “hands-off” way.

Join our next Launch Mastermind workshop if you want to learn about the BEST strategies and latest developments in the world of live launches!

Instead of worrying about growing an email list, what if you focused your efforts on getting ACTUAL CUSTOMERS buying your courses every day?

Most coaches and course creators think they need to spend months, if not YEARS, "growing an audience" before they can make an offer.

So they go out and spend all their time creating content and posting on social media, hoping that people will sign up for their freebie.

One of our former students will be joining us to break down how you can apply this strategy to grow your business up to SEVEN figures!

Are you TERRIFIED of letting go of control?

One common habit separates successful entrepreneurs from those who struggle and flatline: Their ability to LET GO of control, delegate, and claim back their time.

Most entrepreneurs know that if they want to EVER cross that million-dollar mark in their business, they aren't going to be able to do it alone.

Yet, many still work LONGER hours, max themselves out, and operate with an "it's just faster if I do it" mentality.

This ultimately sabotages their revenue, their impact, and their ultimate SUCCESS.

If any of this sounds familiar to you... Well, you're in luck!

In this week's episode of 'The Wealthy Course Creator Show,' Jill will be digging into identifying the blocks that stop you from letting go of CONTROL.

More importantly, you'll learn how to release them, so your business can EVOLVE into the next level.

What if there was a formula you could use to raise the price of your online course or coaching offer, without getting ANY pushback from your audience?

Deep down, most coaches and course creators know they are struggling because they DON'T charge enough for their services.

Not only that, but the THOUGHT of raising prices gives most people anxiety so they bite the bullet and keep everything the same.

This of course leads to thinner and thinner margins and eventually a full-scale burnout!

In today's episode of ‘The Wealthy Course Creator Show’, Josh is going to show you how to adjust and reposition any course or coaching program into a set of 3 products that when offered, can potentially lead to a four-fold increase in profit.

And most importantly, you can do it in a way that allows you to serve EVERYBODY in your market, no matter their financial situation!

Know the one thing that seems to kick everyone in the you-know-what?

CHANGE.

It can be a beatdown at times, can’t it? I mean, even when it's a good change that can change your life, it’s still hard to make it happen.

And that’s because our fantastic minds are designed to keep us safe. So as much as we say or even believe we want to make changes, our primal brain says, “ah hell naw, we need to stay over here where it’s safe and comfortable.

And behold, everything stays the same.

So if you are really ready to make real, sustainable changes in your life, where’s the best place to start?

There’s no one better to ask than Dr. Nicole Lapera.

Dr. Lapera, The Holistic Psychologist, joined me on this episode to walk us through why change is so hard, and how we can go about navigating it in a way that will help us make the lasting changes we really want in our lives.

So unless you enjoy beating your head against the wall trying to figure out why making changes is so damn hard, give this episode a listen. Dr. Lapera has expert guidance that will help you approach change in a new way so it can be just a bit easier.

When the conversation around systemic racism came to the forefront in 2020 a lot of entrepreneurs started scrambling trying to figure out how to navigate this new level of awareness...myself included.

I remember having my eyes opened in a whole new way and realizing how blind I had been to just how prevalent systemic racism had been (hell, still IS) in our society. And during that time I also found myself feeling nervous to speak up because I didn’t want to “get it wrong”.

Can you relate to that?

If you still find yourself in this mode of trying to educate yourself on how systemic racism and inequity is baked into our modern world (just like I am) then today’s guest is going to serve as a giant beacon of wisdom.

Trudi Lebron has been serving the social justice space for years and has been a vocal advocate helping entrepreneurs create anti-racist businesses, and today she’s on the show to shine a light on 3 common marketing mistakes so many entrepreneurs make when trying to be anti-racist.

This conversation is an eye-opener and delivers specific and tactical strategies you can incorporate into your business as you evolve into a more conscious, just and compassionate entrepreneur.

Want to know what those 3 mistakes are? Hit play and let’s dive into this powerful conversation. Read the full show notes: screwtheninetofive.com/463

“What if failure is the best thing that could happen to you? What if it was the redirection you needed? What if getting it wrong was the only way you could learn how to get it right...because it taught you a lesson you needed to learn…”

Be honest: When you were first starting your business, did the “F” word instill an overwhelming sense of fear in you?

If you’re like me, the answer to that is “HELL YES IT DID!”. And if you’re also like me, you’ve likely failed your way to success.

I mean, the amount of times Josh and I have fallen on our face is...well… too many to count! And yet, I am beyond grateful for everything we learned and all the pivots and tweaks that came out of those failures.

And these days? We lean into failure because we know it’s the only way to get better.

So how does one even start to reframe failure so we no longer resist it but WELCOME it?

Hit play and allow me to jam on that! Read the full show notes: screwtheninetofive.com/462

You have a choice in what you do AND don’t do. Often people pleasers will feel like they have to say yes when someone asks for help, otherwise they will be considered rude or selfish or mean if they say no. However, that is simply a belief YOU are choosing to stick with. It’s NOT the truth.”

Let’s keep it really real: It is truly draining to focus all your time and energy on trying to please other people.

The main reason being you will never please everyone. And secondary, it’s exhausting AF trying to do so.

What’s more is when you operate from a place of bending to someone else’s demands, desires and expectations, you dismiss what truly matters to you and makes YOU happy.

And since you’re the most important person in your business, it’s critical to prioritize your own energy and desires so you can operate from a full tank and make the dent on the world you’re here to make.

So hoooowwww do you upgrade this behavior and habit?

Listen in and discover 5 simple reframes and upgrades you can apply in your life to leave this tendency behind for good.

But that isn’t an excuse to bail on what you really, really want.

So how do you push back the urge to go back to what you think will be easier (and spoiler alert: it won’t be) and keep on truckin’?

That’s just what we’re diving into on this episode (so it’s a good thing you showed up)! Read the full show notes: https://www.screwtheninetofive.com/459

Selling gets such a bad rap, you know? Just saying the word can make you feel slimy, desperate, and needy.

But the thing is… selling can actually be a good thing when you hit it from the right angle. (I mean, you are a business owner after all. You gotta sell.)

Now, if you’re selling something you don’t believe in, of course it’s going to feel gross. #duh

But when you have the perfect solution to people’s problems and approach it in the right way, how you (and your people) feel about sales totally changes.

So how do you make that shift so you can start feeling awesome about it — and become a sales ninja?

We’ve got the goods inside this episode!

Do ya ever wish that someone could just… lay it all out for ya?

You know, this whole “sell your course” thing. Sure, you see the big names having epic success, but what about people who are in YOUR stage of business?

Isn’t there someone who’s willing to spill the deets on what it ACTUALLY takes to create and launch a successful course when you don’t have hundreds of thousands to spend on ads or an entire team to support you?

Um… yes.

We’ve interviewed 8 of them. And they’re spilling all of the deets on the simple sales strategy they used to take their course from idea to success.

You’re welcome ;) Read the full show notes: 457

If you listen to just ONE thing we tell you about launching your course or membership, let it be this...

Create a virtual experience for your launch.

Why? Because it’s one of the BEST ways to build attention and excitement for your promo. And let’s be real… offering the same tired old freebies is boring AF (you know it’s true).

Just ask Caitlin and Jessica, who kicked some serious ass in their launch using our very own Facebook pop-up group strategy.

Caitlin hopped onto the show to tell us all about it.

Have you ever felt that tug to do something more? But then you just… don’t do it.
Come on. Be honest. We KNOW you know what we’re talking about.
At first, it’s a small nudge that’s easy to push away. You wonder if it’s just your old friend self-sabotage popping in to distract you from your current path (theeee worst).
It’s safer to just keep chugging along, right?
HA. Wrong. Because here’s the truth: you can’t ignore that nudge forever. When your soul knows it’s time to level up in your life and business, it’s as impatient AF.
So what do you do when it’s go-time, but your brain keeps making excuses to stay put? Well, aren’t you the lucky one… that’s exactly what we’re unpacking in this episode.

While we’d LOVE to give you this magical list of tasks that would bring you massive success, unless you know what season your business is in, our list might not be what you need. And friends don’t waste friends’ time.
So instead of handing over a bunch of tips and strategies that might not even work for where you are RIGHT NOW, let’s talk about the two seasons in your business — exploration and acceleration — and give you the DL on what you need to be doing in both of them.

But here’s what most people won’t tell you:
Those failures? They can actually be the very lessons that make you millions.
Don’t believe us? We’ll prove it ;)

Surround yourself with people you’re freakin’ obsessed with
Let go of what doesn’t serve you
Control what you consume (food, TV, social… all of it)
Live the life you want to live

Would having an article in a big outlet that was written by you give you credibility and clout? Do you KNOW that what you have to say is worthy of huge websites and can help hundreds of thousands of people, or more?

If you answered yes, consider pitching contributed articles and guest posts to grow your business.

Many solopreneurs can’t afford a publicist, but CAN create a killer piece of written content. If you can write an article that helps people, you can drum up valuable earned media via contributed articles.

When you land an earned media placement, you own it forever. And when you have credibility markers like earned media, it's a lot easier to raise your rates! I just sold a 1,200-word article for $1,500 because credibility markers like "I write for Business Insider" let me charge higher rates - and you can too!

It’s now been 5 months since Josh and I became parents.

And ever since we started this journey, learning how to stay present with Kai (and not zone out into our business all hours of the day) has been a big priority for us.

I mean, let’s keep it real…

We entrepreneurs tend to have moments where we become fully consumed by the goings on of our businesses and if we’re not careful it can create a less-than-stellar environment for kids.

Which is why we wanted to bring our friends Colin and Sarah Boyd (speakers and entrepreneurs for 10+ years) onto the podcast this week to talk about raising kids in an entrepreneurial household.

Be honest with me for a sec…

Have you ever had one of those moments where you're in “the zone” and  working away when all of a sudden you look at the clock and it's 3pm and you realize you haven't eaten any food yet?

Yeah? Us too.

And let's not even talk about the painstaking process it can be to shower on a consistent basis.

(Please gawd tell me we're not alone on that one!)

And while Josh and I have tried (and tried AND TRIED) to stay consistent in our health and wellness journey, there have been times where we've let it slip.

Like that time we ate chips for dinner.

Or that time where we thought it would be fun to do a liquid cleanse.

Or that time where Josh moonlighted as a vegan for, like, 2 minutes.

Or that time where we hopped on the Keto train.

(Oh, wait. That's our current health obsession.)

The point is, if you've ever struggled to keep your diet and overall health in check while also building and running a business, we want you to know you're not alone!

Show Notes: http://screwtheninetofive.com/seo/

Ohhh ahhhh!

I know. It may not sound like the sexiest of topics, but you know what it is?

Powerful AF.

Why?

Because people. search. Google. A lot.

And if you know how to show up on Page 1, you can claim a huge chunk of free search traffic that is targeted and use it to fuel your business.

But how the eff do you do that and is SEO really "dying" like some people claim?

And we started sharing our process for finding, pitching and landing guest posts to boost the exposure for your business?

Show Notes: http://screwtheninetofive.com/interviews/

Well, this week we're going to build upon that bad boy and dive into one of our favourite visibility strategies...

Podcast interviews!

Because while guest posts are awe.some. for building attention, your list and links to your site that can feel a tad tedious.

Podcast interviews however are more time-friendly AND they allow new audiences to feel like they are getting to "know" you faster.

How do you find the right shows to pitch and how can you avoid the dreaded pitch slap?

Visibility and attention.

Do you get enough of it for your business?

If you're listening to this episode, I'm guessing not.

Which is totally normal, btw!

In fact, we recently polled our free FB group and found out that nearly 70% of the people who participated in that poll were struggling to get the kind of traffic, visibility and attention they wanted to their site.

Show Notes: http://screwtheninetofive.com/guestblog/

And we get it.

I mean, damn, it's noisy online these days.

What's more is if you don't know how to land features, guest posts and interviews (and make the most of them for your business) it can be hard to stand out online and get the word out there on you and your business.

Which is exactly why we wanted to devote a series of episodes to all things visibility and attention.

Because let's face it: Attention is THE currency online, and if you don't know how to get it you may be left in the dust.

And we don't want that.

So in this episode we're kicking off the series with a strategy we used to not only get the word out there on the Screw in the early days, but it's how we built our first business as well!

What is it?

Guest posting. And more specifically, how to go about guest posting strategically.

Let’s talk about inner critics, shall we, Scroupies?

I mean, if we’re keeping it real, we all have one.

And sometimes it can feel deafeningly loud.

From wondering whether you’ll really be able to do this whole online business thing…

To stressing over putting yourself out there into the cyber-world…

To wondering what your friends and family, hell, the entire internet (!) will think if it doesn’t work out…

Inner critics can be a real beyatch.

Which is why I wanted to shake things up today and call in some mindset reinforcements.

What am I talking about?

The Screw Shrink (Heather Gray), of course!

And if you’re thinking “what the eff is a Screw Shrink?”, don’t sweat. We break it down in this episode AND Heather and I deep-dive into some of the most common fears a lot of us entrepreneurs (and wantrepreneurs) have when deciding to put themselves out there and really go for their dreams.

If you’ve ever felt alone in this journey and wondering if anyone else has ever struggled with the sometimes paralyzing fears and anxieties, give that play button a click.

Because this episode? Is a must-listen.

In fact, our good buddy John Lee Dumas didn't know a damn thing about podcasting before he started. He just knew that he wanted to start....no matter what it took. And he knew that he had a message he needed to share. So what did he do? He dove in head first...and the journey he's had is nothing short of eye-poppingly, jaw-droppingly impressive. I'm talking millions of downloads, nearly 1,000 episodes shot, and a monthly income you almost can't believe. Wanna know how John took his 9-to-5 and screwed it? Listen here.

Be honest with me for a sec... Have you ever wanted something so bad you have found yourself over-thinking it and killing it with incessant analyzing?

Whether it's in your personal life, your day job, your friendship group, your love life or your decision to start an online business, analyzing something to death only does one thing for us... It stops us dead in our tracks and paralyzes us with stress and self-doubt to the point that we find ourselves unable to move forward.

Have you ever felt that way? I know I have definitely been there. And it wasn't until it was pointed out to me cough many MANY times that I decided I needed to do something about it.

Well, that was back in my late 20's and I am STILL trying to hone my anti-perfectionist skills. The struggle is real, y'all! Which is why we wanted to share some of the strategies we've put into play in our business to help us to keep moving forward...regardless of whether something is perfect or not.

Ready to choose something legit and commit...to it? Sorry. I had to try and rhyme there. Well then just click play on our fancy little podcast player and learn how to stop overthinking and just take some freakin' action!

When you're first starting out and dipping your toes in the webpreneurial waters it can be downright difficult to know where you should be focusing your efforts.

Should you blog? Start a podcast? Get social and start "networking"?gag Pitch for guest posts? Participate in telesummits?

Oh, wait, I know! Host live webinars! Because...money! It's never-ending and if we're being honest here, it can leave you feeling, well, a little overwhelmed. Amiright? Because here's the thing... When we're first starting out we don't want to waste our time on what MIGHT work. We just want to focus on what DOES work. Lawwwd do I know how that feels.

In fact, for the first 2 years or so of our business I felt like Josh and I bounced around from idea to idea, trying almost anything someone told us we should try. Because we didn't really know better...and we just wanted something to click. Fast forward a few years and I feel like we have gotten crystal clear on what works best for us right now. The top 3? Podcasting, webinars and live events.

Especially live events. Not just because we've been able to meet some amazing friends, but because we've learned SO much as a result of putting ourselves out there, forking over the cash and showing up in "student mode" to try and take in as much as we possibly can.

In fact, in the last year alone we've hit 7 events, and what's happened as a result of them has been truly earth-shattering for our business and our own personal development.

Think live events are an unnecessary expense? Think again! And then click the play button at the top of the page and let us breakdown our 3 reasons why you NEED to attend a live event if you want to succeed in this game we call online entrepreneurship.

Well well well... Look who decided to show up again around these parts! pssst It's us...just in case the sarcasm was lost over the interwebs.

Yes, we've been a tad MIA this past month...and we sort of fell off the radar. But, we have a really good reason...

Because for the past month we have been drowning! Drowning in work and projects and priorities and conferences and masterminds and finding a place to live...so it's been a bit full-on over here at Chez Stanton. And if I'm being honest, because we had such much going on we had to take a step back from the podcast to allow ourselves to catch up and get our heads above water again.

The good news? We're BACK IN ACTION, BABY! And what's more is we stumbled upon quite possibly the greatest productivity hack on the damn planet while trying to power through and get an almost-impossible amount of work completed in an impossibly short amount of time.

So we thought we would share the time management love with you and help YOU get more done than you ever thought you could get done in a short amount of time. Ready to put your productivity into over-drive and smash a bunch of projects? Y

ou know what to do...

If there is one thing that I've learned over the last 3 years of running a business—or more so had hammered into my brain— it's that if you want to be successful with your online adventures... If you truly want to kick your 9-to-5 to the curb and create that lifestyle of freedom you daydream of while sitting at work... If you want to call the shots in your own life... Then you HAVE to make success a habit. I know, it sounds weird. I mean, how can success be a "habit"? But if you take a close look at the different habits successful people abide by, you'll see there is a common thread. Things like religious exercise routines, controlling their mindset, waking up early, surrounding themselves with other successful people, setting boundaries (and sticking to them!), and bouncing back quickly after a failure. Those are all habits and if you're itching to create success on your own terms, then you need to start incorporating some into your daily life. And if your mind is currently cycling through the many go-to excuses we alllll tend to resort to when considering making a positive change in our life, think of this... What would you rather have: A life that lights you up inside and makes you excited to get up in the morning, but requires some legwork (or ab work...depends on what day it is at the gym wink) OR a life that is safe and comfortable and let's be real...kinda boring! If you're giving the latter a big ol' thumbs down then you are going to dig today's episode, because we are breaking down the 5 biggest success habits that are currently rocking our whole damn world!

Be honest: Is there any part of you that would love to make or save or receive more money in 2015?

Come onnnnn we all want it!

I know I do!

But here's the thing...

Getting rich, creating wealth, or even making more money isn't just about working harder, putting in more hours or even coming up with the "next big thing".

It's about mindset and controlling your emotions.

I know, it sounds a little backwards.

In fact, if you had asked me at the beginning of last year what I thought the biggest contributing factor to making boat-loads of money is I would have told you "working harder".

Turns out I was dead wrong.

And it wasn't until I really started working on my money mindset that I started realizing that I had a lot of money blocks. Like, a LOT.

Wondering what the heck a money block is and how it relates to you not only creating wealth, but living your best life this 2015? Well then click play, and let's get this party started!

It's that time of year, isn't it?

That time where the whole damn internet seems to be flooded with talk of goal-setting, goal-getting, and reflecting back on the year that was.

And while I'm all for gaining perspective and planning for the year ahead - lawwwwd knows I love me some planning! - I also really dig learning HOW to do something properly rather than half-assing it.

Which is how I feel about goal-setting.

You see, I'm a big believer in figuring out what it is you want out of the coming year, but I never really sat down and gave it a ton of thought...let alone planned it all out.

I just sort of winged it.

I would usually either keep the goals to myself, or jot them down on a piece of paper that eventually got thrown out.

But this year we decided to do something different.

We decided to get calculated with our goals.

We flexed our imagination, came up with some scary (but in the best kinda way) goals we feel totally lit up about, and mapped out how we were going to achieve them.

That process alone has given us a level of clarity we didn't expect and has even led to a new exciting idea that is already in motion.

One of the things Josh and I have realized over the past 3 years of running our business together is that sometimes? You gotta know your role.

That means, acknowledging that another person might be better than you at a particular task. And not only that, but realizing it's probably best you step aside and let them do their thang.

And while that might be difficult to admit or recognize, there can be true power in owning your purest strengths and allowing others to step into theirs.

But wtf. How do you do that?

Well in this week's episode we are breaking down 3 easy ways to discover your most powerful strengths and own them so you can become the best, most influential version of you.

You know that feeling you get when you can't seem to wake up?

Or you don't WANT to wake up?

Or you don't feel like being social?

Or you can't seem to muster one creative thought...let alone come up with a witty blogpost, podcast, video, or even newsletter?

Or you just want to curl up in a ball, not think about work at all, eat bad-for-you food, and crush an entire season of Sons of Anarchy?

Helllloooooo Jax Teller!

No?

Just me?

Welcome to burnout, my friend.

Nearly every single webpreneur I've ever met has faced it at some point, including us.

In fact, I'm just now finally getting over that feeling.

I mean, after nearly 3 months of non-stop work creating and building Screw U plus balancing social obligations, business obligations, and trying to be a remotely caring wife, it was bound to happen.

And if I'm being honest, I felt it coming from a mile away...and yet I did nothing about it.

Ridiculous.

Now that I'm finally feeling back to normal I can see that me actively ignoring all those signs was one of the most detrimental things I could have done for myself.

Which is why I knew we just had to shoot a podcast on beating burnout.

Because honestly? It can take you down. Hard.

So if you'd rather avoid that and stay on your game, hit play or download this episode directly from iTunes or Stitcher.

Well, we did it! We kicked the doors open to Screw U two days ago and have already welcomed our first batch of kickass webpreneurs into the community.

To say we are THRILLED is an understatement.

However, I can't help but think back to this time last year when things were drastically different for us.

I'm talkin' humiliating failure, ugly-crying, and a complete and total re-focusing on what we wanted to do with the Screw.

So we figured, hey why not share all that we've learned now after 3 product launches! Because trust me, no launch is ever smooth...especially if you're just starting out.

If you're thinking of creating and launching something, this is a must-listen. Especially if you would like to learn from our mistakes.

All I know is that I would be poppin' bottles all up in this piece!

Well, that's exactly what John Lee Dumas and Kate Erickson did with their business over at EntrepreneurOnFire.com...well...minus the poppin' bottles part.

Be honest: Do you not L.O.V.E the idea of working less and making more?

And while most of us have the goal to eventually take ourselves out of our business - so we can work ON it, and not IN it - it sometimes feels a tad scary to give up certain tasks...amiright?

I know when Josh and I first started thinking about hiring people for the Screw we thought "oh, but it's just easier if I do it".

Can you relate?

30 freakin' months? When the hell did that happen?!

Honestly, I remember the day Josh and I had our first work session
for our brand spankin' new business we decided to create together...

It was early January 2012, it was cold and gloomy as all hell out, and we were hungry to tackle this new website of ours.

It was a skincare site, and we were determined to master affiliate marketing with it.

We had plans. We had goals. And we figured "how hard could it be?".

Fast-forward two and a half years and knowing what we know now, I wish I could go back, pat those two babypreneurs on the head and tell them to buckle in.

Because these last 30 months have been hands down the most transformative 30 months of our entire lives.

We have learned so much. Failed so many times. Experienced so much joy. Ugly-cried so many times cough okay that was just me. Lost money. Made money. Grown an amazing community. Loved. Laughed. And have thrown a tantrum or two...okay...that was just me again.

And I wouldn't trade one single moment of it.

Can you imagine giving up a cushy $160,000/year job to make a few bucks a month selling on eBay?

To us webpreneurs it might not sound crazy, but imagine telling a 9-to-5'er.

Picture their reaction.

I giggle just thinking about it.

Now imagine the immense satisfaction you would feel a few short years later when your online income far surpasses your day job, you own SIX profitable e-commerce stores, and your lifestyle becomes one of freedom and choice.

That's the journey today's couple, Tess and Nathan, have been on for the last few years and today they are breaking down the power of niche e-commerce stores, the people they've been able to help, and the lifestyle they've been able to create.

Confession: When Josh and I decided to go into business together nearly 3 years ago (wow! That snuck up fast!) we did everything the hard way.

Hell, it was a struggle to even get me to consider using Google Drive!

I know. What was I thinking?

Today we're going to get a little DM (that's short for deep and meaningful, my friend!) and talk about a topic that makes most people feel a litttttttle bit uncomfortable.

Money.

There is no doubt in my mind that you have experienced the tension that comes when money is tight. Like a full moon, sh*t gets a little upside-down when your financial cushion starts slipping away.

Now, when Josh and I got started in business we were lucky enough to have a decent sized cushion, but it turns out that running your business can cost quite a bit in the early stages. Within our first 12 months we had blown through that cash and boy did things start getting tense up in the Stanton household.

I doubt anyone has ever said that building your own business will be a breeze, but it's funny how so many of us don't admit how righteously gawd-awful it can feel in the beginning.

Good lawdddd, I need to get something off my chest.

Not long ago Josh and I landed in North America for some quality famjam time after a year and a half in Asia. Besides the obvious cultural and climate changes (hot damn, it was freeeeeeezing!), one of the first things we noticed was how soul sucking Toronto was for our productivity and mindset.

Now, we don't want to harp on 9-5'ers or sound harsh, but being surrounded by those who are locked into the corporate world never seem to understand what it's like when you're running an online business. Again, it's not their fault, but it is incredibly detrimental when you're trying to keep the momentum going in your business.

Our short stay in Toronto really exemplified how being in the right environment can influence business, which is exactly what we be talkin' bout in this episode.

So you aren't loving your day job, but what are you going to do about it? Quit?

Just up and ditching your 9-5 in favor of creating your dream job might sound like a wicked leap of faith, but it can also be, well...a littttttle misguided.

When jumping out of plane, you better have a parachute and the same goes for your job. Ok, so ditching your day job isn't as drastic as hopping out of an airplane cruising at 10,000ft, but you get the picture.

Before we moved to Thailand, Josh and I felt like the only couple on this crazy rollercoaster ride of entrepreneurship. After landing in Chiang Mai, it didn't take us long to realize there were so many other amazing couples out there going through the same ups and downs as us.

One of those couples happened to be the every so British and proper Jenny and Lewis Smith.

Now, we met this twosome at our co-working space and what's so cool about them is that they started their business journey at the exact same time as us.

After honeymooning in Thailand they decided to kick those 9 to 5's to the curb and dig their heels into the world of app development. With a few successful apps on the market now (and even more in the works), there's no question that they've found their calling!

Question: When you're feeling a little sick, a little "meh", a little off, do you Google your symptoms? Make an appointment with your doctor? Wallow in your own sorrow? All of the above

I have to admit, I've been known to put off doctor visits for months because it just feels like too much of a hassle to actually get my act together and go to the doctor.

Which is why we're so jazzed to have Shannon and Alexis on the show today to talk about how they took their brick and mortar businesses online, transformed their life, and are now jet-setting around the world while helping people look and feel healthier.

Let me be honest here: When Josh and I started our first business together, we knew NOTHING about running a business properly, hacking our productivity, or even setting ourselves up for growth.

And let me tell you - it was the BEST thing we ever did for ourselves and our business. Score!

If there is one thing we know, it's how to settle into a new town, city, or island as quickly as possible, in order to get back into a routine and continue running our business.

But it wasn't always that way. When we first started travelling we would take aaaages to figure out where we wanted to live, where we wanted to work, and what amenities were important to us; like having a bar close by.

These days we try and get up and running within 72 hours so we can get back into the swing of things and enjoy our new surroundings once we're set up.

Sure, this isn't the only way to do it, but it has worked like a dream for us in the past so we figured, hey, why not share the love...and unsolicited advice!

Because it can be easy to get distracted and act like a tourist when you're in a new place...but that might not always be the best thing for your business.

And really, when you're first starting out with a business together, its growth should be a big priority!

Unless growth and money isn't important...but really, let's not kid ourselves here. wink

Today we are gettin' a little craaaaazaaaay and chatting with a couple who are still in their 9-5 jobs. Well, sorta....but I'll let them explain.

We met Sophie and Carl back in 2013 in Chiang Mai when they got in touch with us after hearing about us from Mish and Rob's site, and were BLOWN AWAY by their dedication, hustle, and determination to make this lifestyle work for them.

At the time they were each balancing demanding jobs and then coming home and working on their business at night and on weekends.

I mean, I just freakin' love that level of dedication and belief!

Which is why we knew we HAD to get them on the show, because we think it's important (and helpful!) to hear from a couple that isn't quite free of their 9-5's (yet!), but are actively taking the steps to make that happen.

Because let's face it: Just because you might want to screw your 9-5 job doesn't mean you can always just get up and quit. Instead, you need an escape plan to help you get to the point where you have replaced your income and can phase yourself out of your day job.

Which is exactly what we're going to be talking about in this episode!

Trust me, it's a must-listen for anyone still in their job, but dreaming of quitting.

I'm not going to lie, when Josh and I started out with our first affiliate site we made a LOT of mistakes: From the theme we used for our website to our reluctance to create a newsletter, the lack of acohesive "voice" to shoddy promotion strategies, we made nearly every single mistake you could make with that one little website.

Fast-forward to today and it is one of our biggest and most active websites in our arsenal, and we are incredibly grateful to have stumbled along and made a whole slew of mistakes right up front.

Why?

Because it allowed us to fail fast, and learn even faster. I mean, if it wasn't for those (at the time) humiliating slip ups we would never know what we know today.

We also started looking for different resources that could help finesse our online business, and realized there are 5 essential elements that every single online business needs no matter what industry you're in or monetization model you use.

"It will always keep changing and evolving. Like, what you start out with will never be what you end up with." - Jill

This week we're talking to a pretty freakin' awesome couple; Warren and Betsy Talbot from Married with Luggage.

Now, these two have quite a unique story. They refer to themselves as a "recovering, 40-something, Type-A couple" who realized that life is short and made the decision to change theirs.

Working together as joint authors, these two have just celebrated their 10 year wedding anniversary (Congratulations!) and released their 4th book, Married with Luggage, that is all about love and travel.

"All the other things whether it be travel or work or whatever you're doing, have to be secondary in a marriage and in a relationship. The love needs to be first." - Warren

Listen in as these two lay down some serious insight on what it takes to live, work, and travel with the one you love most.

Josh and I have a confession to make...

Sometimes our work life and love life come crashing together, but not in a sexy we're-still-in-the-honeymoon-phase-let's-renew-our-vows kind of way.

Au contraire mon frere!

In fact, there have been days when things got...ummm...a little emotional, shall we say.

I mean, the fact of the matter is, running a business and being in a loving relationship together can get sloppy when you don't take careful measures to separate the two.

So how does one go about separating work from love? Listen in and find out!

I'm going to be honest for a moment. When Josh and I started working together, we felt like we were the only couple out there doing the entrepreneurial thing together.

We felt very out of place in Toronto.

After packing our bags and moving to Thailand, things got a bit easier because we were surrounded by so many like-minded people. We were still craving that couple connection though. You know what I mean...that couple you just jive with, can talk for hours with, laugh with, be honest with, and share the struggles with.

About a year ago I stumbled across UK couple Mish and Rob from MakingItAnywhere.com. Now, these two have a wickedly successful business - or should I say businesses; they have 5! - and have an incredible story.

To build on last week's episode, we are going to focus on one of the must-haves we mentioned; monetization models!

A pretty damn important topic, don't you think?

Because here's the thing: choosing a monetization model before you get going can really help you narrow your focus, niche down to a specific set of customers, create a brand that will appeal to that ideal audience, and ultimately help you make more money (and create more freedom!) in your business!
