He has had many adventures and some serious struggles but mostly maintains a good outlook. We all have a unique journey and Kelly's has covered a lot of ground. The system didn't always work for him but he has a story that is important to hear.

In this Episode, number 96, we had a chance to talk with the new Managing Director of woom USA, the US arm of what I believe is the best children’s bike manufacturer in the world.
Full disclosure here, I am a part-time employee of woom, working with families to provide a powerful experience for children as they start a wonderful journey by bicycle. I was introduced to woom when a friend asked if I wanted to help at an outdoor event where we would be letting children ride bikes. I fell in love with the brand after seeing how it made the learning and riding experience so much better.
So, yes, I’m biased but hopefully that didn’t keep us from having a good interview.

Hello and welcome. My name is Preston “Ty” Tyree and I’ve done a lot of things in my almost 80 years. Recently my new wife and I founded a nonprofit - WAAO! And my world is now focused on Fostering Community particularly in our Mueller neighborhood in Austin, TX.
Since 2017 I’ve been spending more and more time on the vision of We Are All ONE! and the concept of Fostering Community. Episode 57: Running for Austin City Council: Ben Leffler
Welcome to On Politics! A series of podcasts that give us a chance to get know our elected officials better by asking things questions about the things that are important to them. Of course we will also ask about those subjects that are important to us and our neighbors.
We are right in the middle of the 2022 primary season and are going to be talking with some of the people who are running for office in Austin, TX.
Austin is divided into 10 council districts and has a Mayor who is elected by the entire city.
Today, to get us started, we’ll be talking with Ben Leffler who has filed to be a candidate for City Council in District 9 in Austin. District 9 covers most of downtown Austin and some of the close in neighborhoods. It does cover the neighborhood that Ani and I live in, Mueller.
Ben has a great background for a politician. He has a Bachelor in Government and a Masters in Policy. He has worked for elected officials and is a long time Austin resident, raising a family in a close-in neighborhood.
He was doing a Meet and Greet in our neighborhood and It struck me that this election season was a great time to broaden our podcast focus and talk to people who are stepping up to run for office.
Ben is running on a platform that is focussed on making Austin a great place for all of its citizens, to be able to work, live, and play. Here is a link to his website.
Ben Leffler for District 9
During our conversation, Ben mentioned a couple of places that I think need to be recognized.
Foundations Communities: is a non-profit that is providing the wrap-around services and housing to get people off the streets and started on a new life. They have over 20 facilities in Austin serving a population of over 7,000.
Vic and Als Cajun Restaurant: A good local spot with great food and an Austin vibe.

Episode 52: The team of Colt and Stransky investigate the meaning of the fifth key in the book Ani Colt authored: Self Love as Spiritual Practice, 9 Keys to Loving Yourself.
At about 26 minutes in, Ani talks about “Spiritual v Religious”. There is a recent article printed in VOX about a poll to try and get a handle on this issue.
https://www.vox.com/identities/2017/11/10/16630178/study-spiritual-but-not-religious
Here is an excerpt from that article:
“Yet, each of the people I spoke to agree that spirituality, in some sense, is beneficial to them, even if they see that spirituality as opposed to organized religion. Their anecdotal evidence bears out another element of the PRRI study: Spiritual people are, generally, happier, than nonspiritual people. According to the study, 61 percent of spiritual but not religious people and 70 percent of spiritual and religious people reported being “very” or “completely” satisfied with their life, compared to just 53 percent of those who were religious but not spiritual, and 47 percent of those who were neither.”

I AM A LEADER
I have a clear sense of purpose. I know what needs to be done.
I am persistent. I invest whatever time or effort required.
I have self-knowledge. I understand my own strengths and weaknesses.
I am a perpetual learner. I am constantly developing new skills.
I love my work. I see it as an adventure.
I have the ability to attract and energize people through example.
I am emotionally mature. I accept people for how they are - not how I want them to be. I deal with the present - not the past. I don't take people for granted. I trust people. I don't need constant approval.
I am a risk taker. I have a strong sense of purpose and I am fearless.
I see mistakes as opportunities and learning experiences.
I know that leaders are followers - they strive to serve the needs of others.

First, we are glad to be back from the long break we took during the pandemic. What with selling and buying a house, moving our furniture in to storage, traveling around to AirBNBs and then moving all that stuff in storage back into a new house and then to both have to go in for surgery… it has been an eventful time.
But today, we are back and excited about our two guests. Our primary focus is on Growing Old(er)! and we are all doing that, but our guests today helped create a website/clearinghouse for resources to combat Ageism. That site is OldSchool.info and they worked with Ashton Applewhite to make it happen. People are always surprised to hear that Ani and I are approaching 80. That is because they have an idea of what 80 looks like and have a skewed vision of what 80 year olds should act like.
Kyrié (Kee-re-ay) Carpenter (6/6/86) has an interesting website called Kyrieosity.com. She does keynotes and workshops to “plant the seeds of personal and cultural growth” and also is managing editor of the blog posts on ChangingAging with Dr. Bill Thomas. I took the effort to read her masters thesis to see what she had to say about the Anti-Aging myth in America. She has an interesting take and I will ask her about that.
Ryan Backer (6/8/88) is a self-proclained Age Activist - They identify as a white, non-binary, European-American ‘old person in training’ with a BS degree in Gerontological Studies. He also aims high, aiming to eradicate all forms of oppression. On his website AgeActivism.Com he talks about his workshops called AGE QUEER.
Sit back and relax and lets see what our guests have to say about Anti-Ageism and Growing Old(er)!.

Episode 20: Hosted by Preston "Ty" Tyree and Ani Colt: The conversation in this episode is far ranging but keeps coming back to being active physically and mentally to maintain your edge into your 80's and beyond. Chris Crowley, 86 year old Author of Younger Next Year: Live Strong, Fit, and Sexy - Until You're 80 and Beyond has sold over 2 million copies and been translated into 23 languages. This book was his first about what you can do to help you age better and enjoy aging more. Chris also recommends his book Younger Next Year The Exercise Program and Fit Forever videos. The newest edition of the YNY book has new material about keeping mentally active as well. Chris quoted his co-author, Henry Lodge as saying "how long you live is 80% genetics and how well you live is 20% genetics."
Chris and I met at a bicycle camp in Connecticut 15 years ago just after his book was first published. Now he has released a new edition with new material about mental aging and staving off Alzheimer's disease. The 20th episode Growing Old(er)! seemed a great time to ask him to talk about what he has learned about aging well.

Epiphany Jordan lives out of the box, and this interview with her helped me discover why she is so darn interesting, starting with her parents. Her Jewish grandfather was on the run from the Nazis right before World War Two started. Her mother was born in Palestine and is half Catholic and half Jewish. Her Muslim father was born in India, and grew up in South Africa. Each came to USC for college. Both of her parents were academics in Reno where Epiphany was born. She shares in the interview about her unique spirituality and that one of her core strengths or pillars of her personality is around nurturing. Epiphany is the author of the book Somebody Hold Me, the single person's guide to nurture human touch, Our recording was done during the COVID-19 pandemic. She said after we are finished with social distancing, “We have a chance to redesign human touch, which has kind of been my mission for a long time.”
