John Maxwell said "You've got to give up, to go up", meaning that you can't hold on the past, can't hold on to failures - or even successes - to reach newer, better goals. "There is no significance without sacrifice. But the good news is… you will be moving toward a better and more fulfilling way of life if you learn to give up so you can go up."

This is why forgiveness is so important. We don't like to admit we hold grudges, nurse bitterness, and incorporate bias. But those are all too-human characteristics. Your enemy might not even be human or it might be a system or just bad circumstances. But you have to let it go.

So, make sure you listen to Rick's message, then come and listen to this great conversation on the importance of developing the skill of giving up the right to get even.

"Integrity is the glue that holds our way of life together," wrote Billy Graham. "What our young people want to see in their elders is integrity, honesty, truthfulness, and faith. What they hate most of all is hypocrisy and phoniness…Let them see us doing what we would like them to do." As Grace Community Church enters into this next phase of its life - or as you might be facing (or will soon BE facing) challenges, it is important to guard and exercise your integrity.

In this discussion, Sean and Rick talk about the ways we can demonstrate and nurture the moral rebar of our lives!

What does Orwell's 1984, Rand's Atlas Shrugged, Dostoyevsky's Brother's Karamazov, and Bronte's Wuthering Heights have in common? Only that they were the last works written by the authors. Now, to be clear, Rick is as healthy as a horse. But his last few messages remind us that every preacher has his last sermon and sermon series. NEXT is Rick's last choice.

In this podcast, we discover why he's chosen this series and its main character, Joseph, and why we've got a lot to learn!

It is a very special place that Grace is in, right now. We all feel a paradox of emotions: challenging, exciting, sad, happy, cautious, open, etc. And in the middle of this is Rick Hale, who is giving us an opportunity to witness his own journey in a very candid way. For most of us, the end of jobs come with little to no fanfare, and without much philosophical reflection. Rick invites us into examining his own experience so that we can perhaps evaluate our own retirements or cessations.

But he's not out yet! He's got work to do! This week, based on our Lord's teaching of how we are salt and light, he reminds Grace - and therefore every disciple - what we must focus on.

Join us in this fascinating conversation.

Fifteen years after the American Civil War, a man by the name of Thomas Edison patented and began commercializing the incandescent light bulb. It was a watershed moment not only for the United States, but for the world. Thereafter, it would change the way we design buildings, changed the nature of the workday, jumpstarted new businesses, and forced energy production and conveyance into the stratosphere. It was exciting - but very disruptive. If you were in the gas lighting business, back then, you had better have your resume updated!

Disruption. It's all around us and in us. How do we tackle disruption? Paul wasn't worried about the disruptions at the church at Colossae (a church he didn't plan nor ever visited), he simply PRAYED.

Oh - it can't be that simple ... Yes - yes, it can. Simple doesn't mean easy. But simple doesn't mean feeble, either. A hammer is a simple tool. Used correctly, it can be used to build the most useful items conceived by man.

There comes a time when pastors need to retire, and if he's the founding pastor, that's brings a new set of challenges to that local church. Mostly because they've never been there before.

While that could bring anxiety, depression, or insecurity, that's not the case for Grace.

Rick Hale has basically written the textbook on how to transfer leadership in the most gentle, generous, and logical way, the benefit is that he gave his church time to find their next Senior Pastor, Nathan Marsh.

Hailing from the great state of Kansas, Nate, Cosette, Shamonique, and Tyson, are about to make New Mexico their adopted new home - and Grace couldn't be more excited!

Listen-in to this amazing conversation Sean has with Rick and Nate.

"There is no such thing as a permanent Senior Pastor. In fact, we are all interims at what we do." It's true, isn't it: all we are in this world are stewards of our time and opportunities.

On August 22, 2022, Rick Hale signaled his intention to retire, setting in-motion actions that would lead to a retirement that has always been inevitable, but now steadily drawing near.

What does a Senior Pastor do as he faces retirement? What should the congregation do? What can the average disciple learn from their Head Shepherd as he navigates his own ride into the sunset.

It's exciting to be a part of this major historic event in Grace's history - but it also makes us a little nervous! But Pastor Rick assures us: we have nothing to fear!

Are you in the midst of a fire you can't outrun? Has the blaze taken everything from you except your existence? Or are you watching helplessly from the shore, watching a friend or loved one struggle to reach the shore in the storm? Why does this have to happen? Why does disaster (literal or relational), disease, financial ruin, depression, anxiety, and unceasing pressure exist? Didn't God promise to protect us from all that? Or did he say something else?

"Where is God when it Hurts?" is the series that takes a no-punches-pulled look at the whys and what-nexts of life's unwanted events - and finding that the purpose is so much bigger and grander than we could ever imagine.

Dallas Willard, a UC Berkley professor of epistemology and philosophy died in 2013 after a tough battle with pancreatic cancer. He was also a deeply devoted disciple of Jesus Christ. "The reason the book of Job is in the Bible partly is to help us understand we're in a battle. You might think if you read the book of Job it would be a good idea not to call the devil's attention to yourself by being too good, but testing does come. In the time of testing, we want to cling to God, not doubt him, but cling to him ... You want to understand that sometimes the suffering doesn't come for that reason; it comes because there is an enemy who wishes to make you doubt God."

In this new series, "Where is God When it Hurts?" Pastor Rick Hale embarks on a 30,000 foot level study of the book of Job. Make sure you make all of the series, but especially this first message: "Behind the Curtain".

The late Tim Keller wrote: “If Jesus rose from the dead, then you have to accept all that he said; if he didn't rise from the dead, then why worry about any of what he said? The issue on which everything hangs is not whether or not you like his teaching but whether or not he rose from the dead.” Keller believed in the hope Jesus brought to us, that when he died, his departing words were: “There is no downside for me leaving …”

Easter changes everything. It's not an occasion to remember a dead religious figure, it is the triumphant climax of the crescendo of the "earthly" ministry of Jesus - one that still continues!

In this fitting discussion of Mark's Gospel account of Jesus' resurrection, we see Jesus as Lord over death and the grave, and what that means for you and me!

We all want the right answer. But the right answer can be useless if we don't understand the question. CS Lewis brought this up: "Can a mortal ask questions which God finds unanswerable? Quite easily, I should think. All nonsense questions are unanswerable. How many hours are in a mile? Is yellow square or round? Probably half the questions we ask - half our great theological and metaphysical problems - are like that."

But one man had a TurningPoint because he asked all the right questions. Listen to Rick's message, then come back and listen to his conversation with Sean.

Have you ever felt like you weren't enough? Dr. Brene Brown triumphantly declared war on the war we wage on ourselves: "Sufficiency isn't two steps up from poverty or one step short of abundance. It isn't a measure of barely enough or more than enough. Sufficiency isn't an amount at all. It is an experience, a context we generate, a declaration, a knowing that there is enough, and that we are enough." But Dr. Brown is the first. The Apostle Paul had to figure it out, too, and what he discovered uncovers for us this powerful truth: "I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me!" His name was Levi. But that's probably not what others called him. To them, he was collaborator with the enemy, villain, turncoat, traitor, or profiteer. He must have been a lonely, and unhappy man. What respectable family would allow their daughter to marry him? If he was married, what of his children? Perhaps you have very little in common with a first century tax collector, but we all have this in common: we need a champion, we need someone who values us, and we need grace.

On April 19, 2021, Ingenuity, an autonomous arial drone took off and took video of it's surroundings. "Big deal," you might say, "that happens all the time."

It IS a big deal because Ingenuity is on MARS. That's right - the fourth planet in our solar system! It performed way past it's expected lifespan - but all things came to an end because it crashed and broke off a propeller blade. With no one there to repair it, it has become a part of the dirt and rocks of that Big Red planet.

There comes a time in our lives, as well, when what works suddenly comes to a catastrophic end. That happened to a man named Nicodemus - and I'm so glad it did! Listen to a conversation Rick and Sean have about a conversation Nicodemus had with Jesus!

Imagine you've worked all night in the cold and water.

You're exhausted. Your body aches. The morning sun is bouncing off the water making you squint - and you're probably dehydrated and getting a headache.

Suddenly a guy is at the bow of your boat asking if he could use your boat as a platform to speak. Maybe you're a little annoyed at this uncouth request. Maybe all you want to do is just go home and sleep. But for some reason, you listen to him. You take a chance, not realizing that he's taking a chance on you ...

And you end up becoming an important part of world history.

God uses ordinary people. People like you and me. But we need to be willing to be directed - to pivot on the Turning Point he prescribes. Will we take it? Listen to this lively and and important podcast!

Do you love surprises? Probably if it's fun or positive ... but how about an ominous diagnosis, a loved-one in a car wreck, an unexpected budget buster, or a sudden death. That's the kind of surprise we don't appreciate. On Feb 11, 2024, a freak snow storm blew in to ordinarily arid Roswell for just a few hours - unfortunately shutting down Grace's church services. Since Living Your Dash is based on those messages, it forced us to adapt to today's content. We decided: "Why not talk about unexpected circumstances? How can we be prepared for them?

Maybe you're going through an unwanted surprise right now? Maybe you want to be prepared for - not if, but WHEN - the unexpected and unwanted shows up at your door? Take a few moments and ponder that with us.

John Wesley, the prime mover of the Methodist Revival, wrote: "Do all the good you can, By all the means you can, In all the ways you can, In all the places you can, At all the times you can, To all the people you can, As long as ever you can." (Letters of John Wesley) Generosity should flow from a disciple as freely as possible because it is not only expected by Jesus, but he proved that generosity can never be drained. He proved that his very blood - and he gave it all - had no limits.

So how do we live a life of generosity and joy? Listen to this fantastic conversation with Rick and Sean.

“Life’s most persistent and urgent question is: What are you doing for others?” Martin Luther King Jr.

Three very different people: One a pastor and civil rights leader, the other a satirical author, and third global civil rights leader. Only one of them is a Christian - one is radical athiest. CS Lewis brilliantly cut to the chase about WHO Jesus is - and of crucial importance - what HE wants to make of us when he famously penned:

I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: “I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept His claim to be God.” That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic—on a level with the man who says he is a poached egg—or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronising nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to. (Mere Christianity)

The "red letters" - the accentuated words of Jesus - were not meant to make us feel good or bad or cross-stitched on a pillow. They were said to transform mankind and elevate our destiny in ways that we could never ask or imagine.

In this incredible series Rick brings, we can focus on what Jesus says and why he says it.

Lebanese poet and artist Kahlil Gibran famously wrote: "An eye for an eye, and the whole world would be blind." Forgiveness. We want to receive it - and at our altruistic best, believe that we'll grant it. But then the exceptions come ... the justifications become easier. We sigh. We wonder: "Why even try?" But as our ragamuffin friend, Brennan Manning would say, “To live by grace means to acknowledge my whole life story, the light side and the dark ... In admitting my shadow side, I learn who I am and what God’s grace means.”

In walking with Jesus, wading through his words, we understand: we truly cannot live apart from him and we must allow the fruit that must punch through tough and bitter bark.

While it's important to have life goals and even more important to have a life purpose statement, those things don't live in a vacuum. They must be expressed in the real world, past the words, and in with the lives of people. Perhaps this is why pastor JD Greer wrote: "Show me your friends, and I’ll show you your future."

"Well, nothing is more important than fulfilling your life goals!" Maybe? What if it is that, and your eternity? It's not just one is more important than the other - they are linked and both important.

Perhaps it is profoundly important, then - perhaps, more than we realize - that when Jesus says: "Remain in me and I will remain in you," he's saying that being with him is preeminently important for today - and also for forever?

In this fascinating and deeply practical podcast, Rick and Sean uncover the meaning of what it means to be with Jesus.

What does Martin Luther, Rick Hale, and Bing Crosby have in common? Not only are all three good looking and smell nice, people pay attention to what they have to say at Christmas!

With apologies to Bing, Rick borrows from the famous Latin phrases of the Reformers to frame Christmas in its purity: Sola Fide: Faith Alone; Sola Gratia: Grace Alone; Sola Scriptura: Scripture Alone, and this week: Sola Christus: Christ Alone.

It seems obvious, doesn't it? Don't we sing about it? "Joy to the World the Savior reigns ..." or "O come let us adore him Christ the Lord ... " or "Cast out our sin and enter in, be born in us today ..."?

French mathematician and philosopher Blaise Pascal gave us a warning: "Truth is so obscure in these times, and falsehood so established, that, unless we love the truth, we cannot know it."

"Salvation" is defined as "preservation or deliverance from harm, ruin, or loss. It's a common theme in literature, movies, music and art. What would summer super hero movies be like without the salvation by caped crusaders?

But our need for some ONE to deliver us from ultimate harm, ruin, or loss is what Christmas is all about. It is not the celebration of wonder, or innocence, or cultural affects of warmth and human achievement. Those are not bad things - but we must be careful not to miss the point.

What is he point? The Reformers were wise to show the critical importance that Christ is not only the Savior we want and need ... he's the only One there is.

What does the Japanese Union of Scientists and Engineers (JUSE), and an American manufacturing theorist have in common? The Deming Prize! Established in Japan in 1951 by the JUSE consortium, the prize is given to individuals who contribute excellency in the production of goods and services. Because of Deming's principles, names like Honda, Toyota, Nissan, and others have become household names. The irony is that while American automotive manufacturers in Detroit could have benefited from adapting Deming's principles, they chose not to change, and well, a small glimpse into Detroit will show you what happened. "It is not necessary to change;" Deming would later quip. "Survival is not mandatory."

What does this have to do with Christmas? Christmas is mankind's only opportunity to change for the good, for good. We mustn't get caught up in the materialism, emotional attachment to cultural affects, and certainly not to a "Jesus-less" Christmas.

In this fascinating talk between Rick and Sean, they discuss Rick's message, "How to Miss Salvation" and conclude the necessary ways we must change.

Ever heard of Tesla? Of course you have. Depending on who you ask, it's either the most inflated company in the world, or the most groundbreaking. But, like "Jack Sparrow," you HAVE heard of it! Did you know that Elon Musk, it's founder, went bankrupt with the company and almost lost it all? He resorted to never going home and sleeping on the factory floor. Today, Tesla is one of the most profitable and innovative companies in the world. But Musk came just a razor's edge from losing it all.

Sometimes, that's how it goes. And for every "come back" story there are four very sad endings.

So how do we approach failures and fatigue?

In this episode of Living Your Dash, Alan Gedde talks about his message and the lessons learned he couldn't share from the stage. It's a great wrap-up to a great series!

It's a common, "folksy", thing we've heard: "Never pray for patience because God will answer that with lots of trouble!" As if to say, what? God is bumbles around, capriciously looking for ways to make our life harder? If that's true, how can we trust God with help during our most desperate times? What if patience - and its conveyance, delays and difficulties - is exactly what he wants? What if he in fact demands that we learn it for not only our good, but also the fulfilment of His greatest plans? This week, Rick let Sean Lee talk about this "difficult" topic on Sunday, and we dug a little deeper into its meaning.

Delays. Whether it's a stop light, road construction, a post-poned or cancelled flight, or much needed job or money, delays seem to suck out the joy and peace in our lives.

But delays are not only a fact of life, they are also an important part of God's process in resolving the dreams he's placed in our lives.

It's understandable: who wants to wait? But if you're serious about following God's plan God's ways, there's going to be an important growth element requiring faith, trust ... and waiting with hope through the delay! Check out this important podcast!

Noah was told to build a giant ship. Moses was told to go back to Egypt and demand the Hebrew's freedom - with no means to compel their slave masters. Gideon defeated 135,000 Midianites with just 300 men, and some torches. Jesus was going to cover the world with his disciples starting with just 12 (eleven, actually, since Judas ... well, you know). God seems to always seem to do things in unexplainable ways. He is under no obligation to let us in on the secret. But he does gives us a path and builds us in the process. "Wisdom," the Bible Dictionary comments, is "a process of attainment and not an accomplishment." So our clue is NOT that it's not so much to BE wise as we pursue the dream God gives us, but SEEK His wisdom and act wisely.

In his message covering the topic of wisely seeking God's Wisdom, Chris VanDyke helped us to give proper focus. Join us in this really fun talk! Then Rick and Sean talk about some great things happening at Grace.

Former First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt wrote: "The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams.” Did it ever occur to you that only humans (as far as we know of) imagine the future, dream dreams of something that could be, or should be, or must be? In fact, our imagination is a gift and creation of God. God dreams! Think about it: the Gospel is the powerful focus of His dream for all humanity.

Are we meant to dream dreams that God means to use for humanity's future? In this series and this podcast, Rick and Sean talk about this overlooked but powerfully important part of our lives that literally effects everything we do. Don't miss this podcast!

To define culture is an adventure of sorts because it can mean a lot of things. It's a sample of bacteria. It's the expression of arts and literature. It's the standards and mores of a society. At the end of the day, you can scratch your head and be puzzled in it's definition, but know exactly what it is - or what it is not.

Enter the Gospel. What the world didn't know at the time was that it was a singularity event of culture. The Gospel was a new definition of culture. Was it a religion? Yes, and no. Were there expectations of behavior and acceptance of others? Yes, and no. It didn't matter what political boundary it crossed, what age of discovery, or technological advance. The "culture" of The King Jesus and his disciples would mix seamlessly into the context of wherever and whenever they were, and yet find absolute similarity.

This is not a theory or dream. This is history for the last 2,000 years. In this podcast, Rick and Sean talk about the Kingdom of God expressed in how it doesn't want to change culture, per se, but it must. Sound like a contradiction? No. Listen-in and find out more!

Dr. Dallas Willard wrote "The most important thing in your life is not what you do; it’s who you become." According to Jesus' own word, the only way that truly happens is when we are born from above. Jesus did not mean some kind of ephemeral, philosophical, state of mind, he meant that we need to be supernaturally reborn through the Spirit, empowered by his sacrificial, vicarious death and resurrection. This is the Gospel he, himself, prescribed.

But that presupposes that life is precious - not just to the individual, but to the One who started it all. The sad fact of the matter is that neo-darwinianism, based solely on naturalist phenomenon, will always render one towards nihilism: nothing matters. That is the opposite of good news. Who can - literally - live with that?

In this fourth installment of The Fourth Word, Rick discusses the topic of the specialness, holiness, and consequence of life that began with God. You are not an accident or an abberation: you are prized and preferred by Majesty and are uniquely designed and lovingly created for His purpose! Don't forget to check out the special links below!

Welcome to Season 5 of the Living Your Dash Podcast!

Congratulations, listeners, for making it this far with us! It all started off as an interesting side-project, but it has become a favorite (at least to the show's co-host!)

We've already started to talk about a series that Rick started: The Fourth Word. This week's focus? Even though the culture would love to "self-identify" nearly everything, for it be true to the Scriptures, the Biblical Covenant Marriage must match in form (one man and one woman), in function (publicly and legally for life), and in faith (true to the intentions and design of our Creator). That is the VERSION God handed to us. Anything else is a PER-version. And the stakes are quite high. Don't miss this important podcast as a follow-up to Rick's message!

In his satirical masterpiece, The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, Douglas Adams wrote: "In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move." Funny guy! However, nothing could be more important than origins because otherwise - well - you wouldn't be reading this. Origins is much more than the physical universe. It determines our philosophy of life; our teleology, ontology, and epistemology (you know, all those big words you have to Google!). It's not simply anecdotal. It's primary.

The Bible, God's revealed Truth, within just a few paragraphs, reveals everything we need to know about the basis of all reality, physical and metaphysical. This great series will take is through the cornerstones of what we need to understand about God's intention for the Universe.

RECOVERY is defined as "a return to a normal state of health, mind, or strength or the action or process of regaining possession or control of something stolen or lost." It can apply to the economy, business function, physical strength after accident or illness, as well as reclaiming that stolen bike or car. It also applies to our character - which if you're a sinner - everyone is in recovery. "The thief comes to steal, kill and destroy," Jesus told us, "I have come that you might have life and have it to the full." The church, if nothing else, is a recovery node. It's really all it does. Recently, Grace had a special Celebrate Recovery Sunday where we focused on Christ's power of deliverance and recovery in our lives. Make sure you watch it, and then listen to Barry and Sean talk about it.

Then, Rick and Sean talk about the upcoming series, THE FOURTH WORD, where we talk about the single most important factor that brings clarity and power to our lives.

Leadership author John C. Maxwell wrote about the Leadership Law of Magnetism, which is "Who you are is not determined by what you want. It’s determined by who you are." Whether we're leading the person in the mirror, your family, your work group or an organization, it's the quality of the person INSIDE that matters, not what you say. Hopefully, the two align!

In this episode, Rick and Sean discuss the all-important work of structuring the build of the leader so that - whether it's the individual or the organization - there is fruit and productivity.

"Commitment is what transforms a promise into a reality." Did Abraham Lincoln say it? We don't know. What we do know is that it's the truth. Promises are easy to make and say - but commitment of time, effort and resources into real action is what makes it happen.

What about YOU? What kind of promises do you make to yourself? Your family? Your church? To the Lord? We can say a lot of things that we believe, but in the end, if we don't DO something - even if it fails - it doesn't matter.

In this energetic podcast, Rick and Sean talk about the importance of commitment in leadership: leading ourselves, our families, our work, our church, and ultimately, our world.

Passion gets a lot of street cred, these days. We're encouraged - rightly so - to follow our passions. Wisely. That's where purpose comes in. But passion alone can get one into a lot of problems! But purpose with out passion is just a plan. So what brings life and fruit into a purpose with passion? Devotion. Devotion to the Purpose-Giver Person, of course, but devotion wins out when the road gets pitted with potholes, when people are taking pot shots, and the way is hazy with the fog of uncertainty. Jesus calls us to an amazing, fruitful, life. Devotion, is an essential part of self-leadership, leadership in your influence, and leadership in your organization.

This was a fun podcast to produce - we hope you enjoy it!

James Clear did us a service by asking a defining question: "Life is a series of tradeoffs, and greater results usually require greater tradeoffs. The question is not, "Do you want to be great at this?" The question is, "What are you willing to give up in order to be great at this?"

The Disciple's Calling - generally, as we fit into "His Kingdom Come and Will be Done", as well as specifically, how we personally make the difference in how that is done - is the signature of our life and we spend our life's ink to make sure it's done beautifully ... or randomly.

What do you want to do? Because of the cost paid by Paul and Timothy, we are literally talking about it all over the world two thousand years later.

Sean and Rick and a great time talking about this!

"Honesty," wrote Warren Buffet, "is a very expensive gift. Don't expect it from cheap people." And when we think about it, a person who is honest is more than someone who tells the truth. It is a person who has done his best to integrate his values, convictions, beliefs, behaviors, and actions into a single person. It is very difficult to do; we spend our life perfecting it. They are "expensive" or "wealthy" in the investment they made in themselves. They are golden people to know and they are always adding value to our lives. The contrary is - unfortunately - negatively true: a person without integrated character cannot be trusted, cannot be generous, and is prone to destruction.

Whether it is self-leadership, leading one's family, or leading a multi-billion dollar company, integrity of character is a MUST with a leader!

We hear it quite often: "Around here? We're FAMILY!" But if you're also a customer, they expect to get paid; If you need technical support or warranty fulfillment, prepared to spend a lot of time with a guy in an east Asian country; if there's an economic down-turn, they might just lay-off a family member ... But FAMILY in the Bible is a Christian distinctive! God has definite promises and expectations based on this pattern, and he is "betting" the future of the Universe based on FAMILY, not a corporation, not an organizational structure, not a stratified hierarchy ... but, FAMILY.

Former vice-president Al Gore once challenged America to stare into "The Inconvenient Truth." In actuality, the truth isn't concerned about one's convenience with it - it simply is. The world has never been keen to the acceptance of truth. Time and again, the world has proven that we'd rather restructure, repackage, or destroy that which is culturally, socially, or politically repugnant or a threat to power structures. But the truth doesn't care. "We have nothing to fear from the truth," a brave soul once said, but "in-truth" they were naive. Unless we go forward with courage.

In this podcast, Sean talks with pastor Barry Anderson about the humble adherence leaders must have toward the truth. If we want to be leaders of integrity, we must stick with our commitment to the truth.

Leadership expert, John Maxwell, wrote: "Effective leaders sacrifice much that is good in order to dedicate themselves to what is best." Think about it: leaders sacrificially give; great leaders give sacrificially (in some cases, not in a healthy way!).

You ARE a leader - whether of yourself, your family, a work team, a ministry team, or t-ball team ... but EVERYONE leads. The question is: Are we leading well? In this great podcast, Rick and Sean discuss the important principle every leader must possess: they will give up, to go up.

Stephen Covey wrote that a leader is the one who climbs the tallest tree, surveys the entire situation, and yells, 'Wrong jungle!' To the rest of the group under the canopy, we just want out of the jungle as quickly and as painlessly as possible. We certainly don't want to hear: "We need to restart!" But that's why we need leaders. And those leaders must persevere in the hardest circumstances, convincing others that it is our moral duty to realign. Wow!

That's why Rick's message is tremendously important. Join this conversation he has with Sean as we discover why perseverance is a leader's best friend!

It goes by other monikers: "Until the wheels fall off", "Until the cows come home", "Until the light go out" ... or simply: "A Lifer". It means that a person is so enthusiastic about something or discovered that wonderful nexus of their abilities, skills, and personality, that they are living out their calling. For the disciple, we're all "Lifers" in serving each other. Ministry may take various forms and iterations, but we never stop serving the Body of Christ.

Some people erroneously believe that "volunteer" ministry is something we do only when we have the desire, time, or optimal ability. God doesn't have a retirement plan for ministry - just transitions to something else. Check out the last of this series - and become a Lifer!

When the Lord Jesus said those words, "Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.” I doubt that many of us realized the profound authority and potential that was given to his disciples. Sure - we could have done a better job over the centuries - but the fact remains that disciples of Jesus have guided history in fruitful and beautiful ways because of our desire to substantiate our desire to be obedient to Jesus in this matter: government, art, justice, science, education, music, research, healthcare, economy ... so many examples of good could be easily shown that have very clear Christian origins.

So where do WE start? How do we do good at the basic level - and let God take care of the rest? You need to listen to Rick's message!

The sky diving community has funny sayings when it comes to "anomalies" with your gear after jumping out of the plane. Here's one: "If you have a problem with your parachute (due to misdeployment or gets ripped or tangled) ... think through the problem, but relax - you've got the rest of your life to figure it out." 🤪

In this week's podcast, we discover that while we're not plummeting out of an airplane at 200 feet per second, we don't have all the time in the world to decide if we'll obey the Lord in collaborating with him in his Kingdom. Especially as it concerns kids and students. Once they're gone - they're likely gone from our influence forever. Dr. Alister McGrath, former atheists (now theologian and professor at Gresham College) had this to say about the Priesthood of the Believer: "As early as 1520, Luther had laid the fundamental conceptual foundations for created sacred space within the secular. His doctrine of the 'priesthood of all believers' asserted that there is no genuine difference of status between the 'spiritual' and the 'temporal' order. All Christians are called to be priests - and can exercise that calling within the everyday world. The idea of 'calling' was fundamentally redefined: no longer was it about being called to serve God by leaving the world; it was now about serving God in the world."

The logical consequence that a disciple has about God's purpose for their life cannot be overstated. Whilst we wander about pining of this or that, arguing and celebrating that or this, we waste time that does not belong to us, gifts and abilities that are not meant for us.

Most people spend about $800 a year on the lottery. A gambling addict will waste $10,000 a year. People cope with stress in their lives by turning to games of chance for that adrenaline hit, or deceive themselves on many levels in believing that more money will be the answer to their problems. Gambling, then, wouldn't make sense to God, since he is omniscient and omnipotent. He doesn't need anything and is completely happy.

AND YET ... the mystery of the Bible is that God worked in human history - people made in his image - by placing "bets" on their obedience. No, not bets. But something more important. It turns out his most desirable "purchase" was mankind's redemption. The staggeringly high cost of the currency of his desire and love was his Only Begotten Son. Then, he bet that his Church would complete the process of testifying to the Gospel and bring about his greatest glory.

Care to invest on that bet? You'd be wise if you did!

In this podcast, Sean and Rick talked about ministry given to the church as love demonstrated to each other as the greatest gamble in HIStory. A dangerous mix of metaphor? Possibly. But what might be worse? Find out in this interesting and pot-stirring podcast!

The Great Reformation brought with it ground-breaking changes to the Church, symbolized by three Latin phrases: Sola Fide (faith alone), Sola Gratia (grace alone), and Sola Scriptura (Scripture Alone). What was NOT changed, however, had negative consequences that are still being felt today. The concept is "the Priesthood of the Believer" - which should have done away with an elite sacerdotal corps and returning ministry to every member of the church. But for many reasons (not good), that didn't happen. Today, much of the church is unscripturally hamstrung by the belief that "professional clergy" must do all the ministry - or at least all the "important" ministry.

In this brand new series, Rick is trying to destroy that myth. Listen to this really important podcast - and then take up YOUR duty as God's Minister!

Easter is about the Resurrection of Christ after he laid down his life as The Atoning Sacrifice for our sins. But have you ever thought about the particular days in "Holy Week"? Thursday has a special title: Maundy Thursday; Friday has a title: Good Friday; Sunday is Easter Sunday ... but Saturday is left nameless. That is the title of Rick's Easter Message and the topic of this week's podcast.

If you've ever wondered what "The Day With No Name" is all about ...

If you've ever what that means for us on a practical level ...

On Palm Sunday, the people in Jerusalem laid down palm branches and even their cloaks on which Jesus and the donkey he rode on could trample. We would say, "rolling out the red carpet" - in Jesus honor. Biblical Commentator William Barclay observed: "It may well be that the world is denied miracle after miracle and triumph after triumph because we will not bring to Christ what we have and what we are. If, just as we are, we would lay ourselves on the altar of service of Jesus Christ, there is no saying what Christ could do with us and through us."On that Day, two types of people made a decision: to rejoice in God's decision or to deny him with every fibre of their being. Good Friday and Easter Sunday is soon upon us! Today, we still have to decide: Is Jesus worthy of laying down our lives for His Kingdom? Or do we - as the religious elite and political power of that day - wish he'd just go away? 🔔 Listen to the podcast NOW! https://www.roswellgrace.com/living-your-dash-podcast❓ Why we're called Living Your Dash and how to get a FREE copy of Rick's book: https://www.livingyourdash.info/🎧 Listen to Rick's message, HERE: https://youtu.be/y-bs9m_y65U?t=2866🏠 Find out more about Grace Community Church: https://www.roswellgrace.com/

Jesus Christ gave a command that is profoundly powerful: "A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." (John 13:34-35) To serve each other - not for our own satisfaction but the help of the other - is not intended to be purposely conspicuous, but by nature of its very being in a selfish world, it will be. This is the way the Church is to meant to impact our world: loving service no matter what. In this message from his heart, Barry Anderson talks with Sean about his message on Sunday, then Rick jumps in to tell us about Easter!🔔 Listen to the podcast NOW! https://www.roswellgrace.com/living-your-dash-podcast❓ Why we're called Living Your Dash and how to get a FREE copy of Rick's book: https://www.livingyourdash.info/🎧 Listen to Barry's message, HERE: https://youtu.be/wyqc-kbtP0o?t=2483🏠 Find out more about Grace Community Church: https://www.roswellgrace.com/

Have you ever heard of a "dummy tank"? No, it's not a place where you stick your little brother or sister. During WW1 and WW2, armies on both sides would use decoy tanks to try and fool the enemy into thinking they were moving in one direction while they were really amassing a lethal movement elsewhere. This was famously done in North Africa to draw forces away from Normandy during WW2. Sometimes, you need to do the unexpected and benign in order to unleash the dynamic and potent. In this final rule of the Jordan River Rules, God determined to show his people that he wanted their obedience more then their swords; he wanted their faith, more than their forces. He was building a case for them - and for us - that it is not by might or by power, but by His Spirit that he will accomplish what he attends. Listen in to this fun conversation over an unusual "conquest".🔔 Listen to the podcast NOW! https://www.roswellgrace.com/living-your-dash-podcast❓ Why we're called Living Your Dash and how to get a FREE copy of Rick's book: https://www.livingyourdash.info/🎧 Listen to Rick's message, HERE: https://youtu.be/SlaqME2kSFk?t=2525📗 Learn more about our next series: Jordan River Rules! https://www.roswellgrace.com/jordanriver🏠 Find out more about Grace Community Church: https://www.roswellgrace.com/

If anyone knew of the shadow of the complexities and paradoxes of our Universe, it was Albert Einstien, who was quoted - quite astutely, I might add - as saying: "Once you can accept the universe as matter expanding into nothing that is something, wearing stripes with plaid comes easy." If the Jordan River Rules tell us anything, it's that there are things beyond our control and beyond our understanding, but we still have to take responsibility of our part in the matter. Pretending that our choices doesn't matter is foolishness; pretending that only our choices matter is madness. We need to recognize that God, who created the Universe, is powerful enough to create it, and powerful enough to get us through our own Jordan River.

Check out this fascinating talk with Sean and Rick.

On July 20, 1969, the LEM or Lunar Excursion Module, Eagle, touched down on the moon. The LEM had two parts: the top part was the ascent stage that lifted off after their mission was over, to join up with Columbia, and head on home. The bottom part, the descent stage became a permanent structure on what became Tranquility Base. NASA, knowing a bit of decorum was in order, placed a plaque on one of the landing legs, reading: "Here men from the planet Earth first set foot upon the Moon July 1969, A.D. We came in peace for all mankind." It is of course there to this day. Untouched and unvisited, but unforgettable because of what it means.

In this segment of the Jordan River Rules series, Rick and Sean discuss what it meant for the Israelites to build a monument of his Grace ... and how that applies to disciples, today! Don't miss this discussion!

I was first, astounded by his height (5'7"), but then I was dumbstruck because I knew who he was: Felix Baumgartner - the first man to break the soundbarrier ... while skydiving. He had been training in Roswell, NM for his death-defying jump from space on Oct 14, 2012, and now he was getting a cup of joe at Starbucks like any other "Joe". I applauded his effort and tried to buy him coffee, but he had to go. Before he stepped off the capsule, he said: "I'm going home now ..." and stepped into history.

That's exactly what the Levites did, too, when they carried the Ark ... a more important historical event (Sorry, Felix, but true)! Listen to Rick and Sean talk about Sean's recent sermon on Living Your Dash!

Do you know what 32.1ºF means? How about 211ºF? It's just before water either freezes or boils - before H2O changes from a liquid to a solid or liquid to vapor. One degree is all that makes a difference. And when it comes to making a difference for God, it just takes that degree of faith to move toward the direction that God intends for us to go.

What will it be? Do you want really cold or really hot water ... or something that can make a difference and even be transformed into working energy?

In this week's podcast, find out the critical difference it takes to turn wishful thinking into spiritual power.

Psalm 32:8 gives an incredible promise: "I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go; I will counsel you with my loving eye on you." How about it: do you believe God meant that? Do you believe he can tell no lies and that he'll do just that? This morning, did you walk out the door counting on the fact that he would do that?

As we reach the fifth marker of the Jordan River Rules, we discover that God will guide us to the place we've never been before, and he's delighted to show us the way! In this podcast, Sean and Rick consider God's wonderful plans and purpose, and why we can trust him to get us there.

Ever heard of Ronald Wayne? Not surprising. But he was one of the co-founders of a little know computer company (in 1976) called "Apple". It was Wayne who drew up the first partnership agreement, wrote the Apple I manual and even drew the logo. BUT he sold the his 10% share for $1,500 ... today, that would be $55 billion. You read that right. The moral of the story: there is such a thing as a cost of lost opportunity, and for the disciple, there is no "gamble" with our obedience - only the profit that comes from God's pleasure.

The Israelites were told to get ready and MOVE ... there comes a time when YOU must MOVE - no more planning, time for preparation is over ... it's time to GO!

Join Rick and Sean as they discuss the important Rule: Step Up!

Did you know that the phrase "be strong" is found 30 times in the Bible? That's what Robert Morgan found. And he needed to know where every one was found because he needed to companion his wife through the final stages of disease. Have you been there? Maybe not experiencing a family member's death, but maybe when a dream died, a job loss, failure of health, or whatever it was that made you want to throw up your hands and say, "I quit! This is too much, too soon, too intense!" You're not alone! And here's the good news - you CAN make it! You're meant to, in fact. Listen-in on this great conversation of Rule #2: Say NO to Discouragement and YES to Strength!"

JP Morgan was quoted as saying: "The first step towards getting somewhere is to decide you’re not going to stay where you are." Whether you're talking about investing, planning a work work project, planning a vacation, or what you're going to cook for dinner, you have to start moving - you have to take a step. A guy named Arthur Ungnome said "Never let the past spoil your present or govern your future." I don't know who Arthur is, but he's right, don't you think? And I'm so glad that when it was time for Moses to let go of the riegns and let Joshua take over, he did so knowing the best was yet to come. And we saw it happen! It's literally history.

But what about you? Do you believe that - while the past can inform us - it's time to let it go and move forward toward the future? It's time to put it in the rear-view mirror - then break off the mirror. Make sure you don't miss one episode of The Jordan River Rules series!

"Christmas" has had a long time to develop a socio-cultural construct all it's own. American Christmas is tied not only to its Jewish foundation, but a millennia and more of european influence plus the steamroller of twentieth century advertising (ever thought: where did the fat red Santa come from? Think: Coke adverts from 1931!).

Rick's message series beckons us to give an honest look at the meaning of Christmas and find out that the hope, light, life, and joy that it brings is not found in sentimentality or marketing: it is in the love of Father God whom the angels declared: "on earth peace to men on whom His favor rests." Oh, there is MUCH to be MERRY about! But ... we need to understand it from God's perspective. Check out this powerful podcast!

The term "salvation" is not restricted to the Judeo-Christian faith. Most religions have at the core of their beliefs a narrative of why the world is in the mess that it is and why their solution is the best. But "Followers of the Way" (Acts 9:1-2), disciples of "The Way, Truth and Life" (Jn 14:6) have always said that it was not WE who found the Person or designed the Path - it was HE who revealed himself, HE who initiated the plan (and revealed it had existed for centuries), HE who followed through, and HE who proved his character and word by raising from the dead. The Birth of Jesus was no accident (Jn 1:9-14)! Christmas gets lost in the flurry of Christmas songs, emotional attachment, senitimentality, and consumerism - but it's real reason is the eradication of the ugliest things in the universe: our sin.

This week, Rick and Sean talk about the nature of salvation and what it means for you and me.

A stunning aspect of the coming of Christ is that no one saw it coming. Oh, people had their guesses as to what tribe and region he'd come from (Judah and Judea), but it was simply a surprise. The surprise gets thicker: the only other people whom the Father would reveal this with other than Mary and Joseph were some shepherds. Shepherds?! Talk about a strange choice: no one cared about what they thought; they weren't known to be men of influence, wisdom, or spiritual depth. They were ordinary - maybe sub-ordinary. Why? One sure reason was to teach us some great lessons to learn TODAY, in a time far from then, and in a country and language those shepherds never would have guessed! But here we are!

Make sure you listen to Rick's message and then stick around for the discussion!

"To deny your pain is to refuse God's power to help you recover. You will never find healing from your hurts, hang-ups, and habits, until you confront your pain." ~ Johnny Baker

When we think of the besetting problems we have in the United States, alcoholism, crime, drug abuse, opioid addiction, suicide, etc., substances get the focus. But substances - or any maladaptive behavior - are simply the means of escape. Adverse childhood trauma, bullying, co-dependency, suicide ideation, loneliness, pornography ... these are the blinking red warning lights of America's soul. If only there was a way forward ... THERE IS, and Jesus Christ told us so: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest." (Mt. 11:28) At Grace Community Church, we are commited to helping people find and fulfill God's purpose for your life - which means real freedom from past trauma and the entanglements they cause.

In this powerful episode of Living Your Dasy, Sean sits down with Major Tony Kessel and Olivia Tucker for an amazing discussion of how God helped them live their dash by setting them free!

Faithful trusting in God our Father is not the same thing as having faith that your favorite sports team will make win the World Series or the Super Bowl. Believe me - Cleveland fans know this is true! God is not interested in building a fan base or making "fan boys" - he wants trusting children who believe that "timing" doesn't matter: God will always honor his purposes, promises, and people who trust him. But what do we do in the mean-time? In this podcast, Rick and Sean talk about the complexities and rewards of becoming a mature person of faith who waits!

Probably every world religion has something to say about facing your fears. For some, fear is an illusion to be meditated out of existence. For others you take a saying or proverb and do your best not let it become overwhelming. But that is not what Jesus says: "In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world." He didn't deny fearful things existed, nor did he say, "just deal with it." He said HE OVERCOMES. He personally helps us.

In what is probably one of the most important podcasts we've done, listen-in on Rick and Sean's conversation on the specifics of trusting God with a daring faith where struggle always leads to a strategic victory!

The dictionary defines initiative as: (1) the ability to assess and initiate things independently; (2) the power or opportunity to act or take charge before others do; (3) an act or strategy intended to resolve a difficulty or improve a situation; a fresh approach to something.

When it comes to living our lives out as disciples, we must daily - and in fact, moment by moment - take the initiative to modify our "followship" of Jesus as we navigate this world. Sometimes the rules and culture conform without problem to Jesus' rule and riegn; sometimes there's an opposition or even a bizarre twist. That's what Peter had to do as he learned that following Jesus can happen at a time and place that just doesn't make sense! But as disciples, we must take the initiative that faith allows! Don't miss this really interesting conversation Sean has with Pastor Kevin price, then stick around for Rick's last word.

Stephen Covey wrote "All things are created twice. There’s a mental or first creation, and a physical or second creation to all things. Through imagination, we can visualize the uncreated worlds of potential that lie within us.” This isn't just hype or mawkish self-help blather - it's true. If the great explorers had never imagined a world over the horizon; if pioneering doctors had not imagined powerful healing elements; if the founders of the Constitution did not a imagine a government of the people, by the people, for the people, where would we be?

God imagined your life. What does that mean?

Does how you imagine the stewardship of your life make a difference? Is it?

In this week's podcast, Rick and Sean discuss his last message and the importance of yielding our imagination go God.

Author CS Lewis wrote: "God can’t give us peace and happiness apart from Himself because there is no such thing." What do you think of that?

The Bible does promise much of the opposite: that when we trust God for all our peace and happiness, we will have more than we could ever ask or imagine! That was the topic of Rick's message and that's the topic of ep. 153.

Recorded on the road, while Sean was getting his fourth scan at MD Anderson, join Rick and Sean as they discuss the importance of expectation in our faith!

In 1873, Rev. Henry Varley made friends with a young American evangelist. They were cut from the same cloth because they both cared deeply about those who did not know Christ as Savior and a church that seemed sleepy about the whole affair. Varley said to his young friend: "The world has yet to see what God will do with a man fully consecrated to him." The Holy Spirit challenged that man's faith. That day, Dwight Lyman Moody, told himself and others: "By the grace of God - I'll be that man!" Moody later became the most important evangelist in American history, leading over one million people to discipleship to Jesus Christ. His church and institute still exist today.

Do we need that kind of faith today? Surely we do! What does it take? Listen to the sermon and then listen to this important podcast!

Jesus the Christ made the world this promise: "The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full." How does that meaningful life happen. It happens at multiple levels and has various attachment point, but in the end it is quite simple: He wants to restore what our ancestors abdicated, what we rebelled against, and what the devil lies about to repent. But Jesus wants us to ask him: "Thy Kingdom come and Thy will be done!" How on earth does this happen? Simple, actually - but not without consequence. Our guest Speaker Walter Nusbaum delivered a powerful message to make us think about God's process of restoration, and then Sean sat down with Walter and then Rick for deeper discussion! Make sure that you listen to Walter's message, first, then come back and hear the rest!

Singers get famous for it. Movies are made about it. Books become best sellers about it. They say that it makes the world go 'round. But you can't see it, taste it, touch it, or quantify it ... but you know it's there! We're talking about LOVE! But what the world says is love is very different from what God says about it - and only He knows it's true definition, power, and character. In fact the Bible says: "God is love." (1 Jn. 4:7), and we need to learn to grow in love, by being shown that love and showing that love. Simple, right? Yes! Easy? Well, make sure you watch the message, and then come back and listen to the podcast ... it's not impossible, but there are unique challenges!

It has been said that you know you're an adult when you get excited about a new cleaning sponge at the kitchen sink. (I know! It's awesome, right?!) 🤩 🥳

But truthfully, we sometimes think of the disciple's life as a free-for-all - that it doesn't matter about measing growth as long as your growing. But Jesus had different ideas:"A pupil is not above his teacher; but everyone, after he has been fully trained, will be like his teacher." (Lk 6:40) There are definately benchmarks. Wouldn't it be great to know what they are? Look no further! You've come across the right series and the right podcast!

God says in 2 Cor 3:17 "Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom." For the disciple of Jesus, we know it is not the freedom to do what we want, but liberation to pursue God winsomely and unencumbered by the nagging voices of "you should" or "you have to" in order to please God! That's the beauty of a RELATIONSHIP and SPIRITUAL TRANSFORMATION. In this podcast, Rick and Sean talk about closing this series up and explore the unexpected ways that freedom helps us to live in a way that pleases God and frees us to live with each other.

As Americans, we love liberty - we sing about it, have gargantuan statues memorialized for it, and even name space craft after it. Our common thought is that liberty is the right to do what we want. But that's not true. Philosopher Dallas Willard clarified that "to do what you want can be the greatest prison you can be in. It all depends on what you want. And the way out, of course, is to realize that what I want must be what God wants, and that is what's best for me. Freedom from is very different from freedom to."

This week, Rick and Sean take some time to discover this important difference and why a disciple of Jesus must be absolutely clear about their Liberty in Christ.

In New York, a Mr. H. Smithers purchased a car on payments and paid faithfully for it ... even after he had paid it in full! In fact, he would not have even know he had finished paying were it not for the fact that he was transferring the title over to his daughter. The bank ended up owing him more than the car was worth due to intrest!

"What a stupid bank!" we might cluck our tongues and say. But when we have the mentality that we need to receive the grace of Jesus AND also add on more works ... it's the same thing. Actually, it's worse! Make sure you listen to Rick's message and them catch this fascinating podcast on liberty un-tapped!

That humorous but indecorous rascal Woody Allen once quipped: "Life doesn't imitate art, it imitates bad television." The Gospel - literally meaning: good news - promises that God loves us and has provided the means for us to be forgiven, purchased, and even adopted as sons and daughters because of the vicarious death and resurrection of his Son, Jesus Christ. This makes us light and joyful and happy! But there is a stern, sober side: not only is there the constant insistence of the sinful nature to draw us back into a wasteful life, there is a perversion of grace that on the outside looks like God's intention, but in reality, it is a monstrous imprisoning of our hearts: the earning of God's favor by good works. This week, Rick talked about the dangers of legalism and why we need to be vigialent against it! Catch the message below!

Some have accused the Church of using the Bible as a means of promoting prejudice. They point to exclusion, patriarchy, and even oppression. While it's true that any tool intended for good can be used for evil purposes, are they right?  This is where even a simple, brief overview of the Bible makes it clear that God love justice, hates oppression, and that Christ came to uplift and give voice to the weak, downtrodden and illegitimized. So does the Bible talk about prejudice, the "gateway drug" to oppression? Absolutely!  Listen into this important timely podcast about the freedom God intends for us to have regarding prejudice!

Simon, son of Jonas (not to be confused with the other Jonas brothers), aka: The Apostle Peter, was recorded in Acts as being instrumental in leading the Church of Jesus into an important relationship that God wanted with the world: that they were highly prized and desired by him. In his letter, he made it clear the kind of attitude the Body of Christ should reserve: "You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the day of God and speed its coming." (2 Peter 3:11-12) The Church is meant to engage with people - all kinds of people - and no one is better suited.

In this very special podcast, Sean sits down with his old friend and former staff member at Grace, Lendell Nolan, to talk about the message he gave on June 26. Don't miss this very special podcast!

Nineteenth century English pastor Charles Spurgeon observed keenly: "Satan always hates Christian fellowship; it is his policy to keep Christians apart. Anything which can divide saints from one another he delights in. He attaches far more importance to godly intercourse than we do. Since union is strength, he does his best to promote separation."

Christian unity is not a nice thing to have - it is essential. In this week's podcast, Rick and Sean discuss why and how the Disciple's birthright is something we must guard and fight for.

"KEEP OFF!" That's usually a sign we see on golf courses, missile ranges, and private hunting ranges. At first blush, it might feel like someone is paranoid, miserly, or doesn't trust anyone. But think on this: if you were going to surgery, would you care if the surgeon wore sterile gowns, gloves and washed his hands and arms? How about a restaurant: would you want the waiter to test the food for you, or sneeze on it? Suddenly, KEEP OFF seems like a good idea!

When it comes to the Good News, it's perfectly pleasant in every way. It doesn't need anyone to add or subtract to it. It is the exact truth we need of a relationship God wants to establish. God doesn't want his message of love to be impure when it reaches you! That's what Rick and Sean talks about this week!

The word Gospel means "Good News". It wasn't originally a particular religious word back in the day, but after the coming of Jesus and what he did for mankind, there is no other connotation. In fact, some people will align a statement as truly truthful by adding, "That's the 'gospel' truth!"

But has western culture, particuarly American culture, shaded what the Gospel is, why it is so costly, why mankind so desperately needs it, and why we must honor it's consequences?

In this brand new series, Rick is taking us through the book of Galatians, whom the Reformers called "The Magna Carta of the Christian Faith." You won't want to miss one message or one podcast in this series! Thanks for being with us!

If you keep your feet from breaking the Sabbath and from doing as you please on my holy day, if you call the Sabbath a delight and the LORD’S holy day honorable, and if you honor it by not going your own way and not doing as you please or speaking idle words, 14 then you will find your joy in the LORD, and I will cause you to ride on the heights of the land and to feast on the inheritance of your father Jacob.” The mouth of the LORD has spoken.

Those words are from Isaiah 58:13-14. Now, as Sean and Rick will talk about, he had only recently rediscovered this passage and the unique privlege it presesnts. In fact, Sean would confess: "I commited the sin of dishonoring the Sabbath."

"Wait! I thought Sabbath was church on Sunday!"

That's kind of what Sean thought. Listen to the message, then listen to his rationale and specifics of how he keeps the Sabbath and why it could be vitally important to YOU!

But why else are disciples on earth except to bring glory to God and be the objective proof of his love and intention for all man-kind? We all know we should be people of integrity: people who live by values and wouldn't dream of being inflexible with them. But as the famous philosopher Woody Allen once said, "Life doesn't imitate art; it imitates bad television." And have you seen reality TV? 🤢 But the Kingdom of God is made up of people who desire integrity more than anything. One could say, it is the essense of discipleship: becoming the person we're created by God to be, not just who we (or who we think others?) aspire to be.

In this bouncy house of a conversation podcast, Rick and Sean discuss the importance of really integrating the character of Christ in our lives.

“Some jobs pay better," said Dirty Jobs, Mike Rowe, "and some jobs smell better, and some jobs have no business being treated like careers. But work is never the enemy, regardless of the wage. Because somewhere between the job and the paycheck, there's still a thing called opportunity, and that's what people need to pursue.”

Work is made up of four letters, but it's not a "four letter word" - it was always meant to be a blessing and the track of fulfilling our purpose. God cares about your work! But there are constraints that make it powerful - or can make it toxic. Listen in to this powerful podcast!

"Attitude," wrote business consultant Zig Ziglar, "not aptitude, is what determines your altitude." What does it mean to have a winning or transformative attitude?  The Apostle Paul knew because the Holy Spirit gave him instructions to teach the Church how to have a truly undeafetable and powerfully positive attitude. It's not for the "elite" or "super-spiritual" - it's readily accessible for all and it's a crying shame if we don't know how!  Have we got your attention?  Don't miss this great podcast!

The name "singularity" is given by physicists describe a place in the universe where our laws of physics simply break down. Black holes, in particular, are given this description because it is theorized that its enormous mass is squeezed down into a point so infinately small that its gravity far exceeds anything imaginable. Anything - mass, even light and time - are swallowed up. Impossible? No - in fact, they've even taken pictures.

Now, this may spike the ire of physicists (let us know, okay?) but it is not a stretch of the imagination to say that The Resurrection of The Lord Jesus Christ is the most important and powerful singularity event ... in Everything. The Creator, incarnated Himself into his marred creation, and swallowed up the sin and destriction we caused, setting us free!

When America was barely 50 years old, Danish theologian and philosopher, Soren Kierkegaard lamented: "Most men pursue pleasure with such breathless haste that they hurry past it." I think we'd all agree that with all the progress and pleasures weve created, not much has been learned.

It might surprise you to learn that God is very interested in your rest.  In fact, it's such a big deal, he made it one of the Ten Commandments. Yet, most of us confuse it with relaxation or vacation. Not so.

Don't miss this important message by Rick, and see if the conversation Rick and Sean have stirs interest in not just taking time off, but re-creatively devoting time to God.

This week, we're taking a break from our series to discuss the message and messenger that is Hosanna Wong. Before he met Christ, Hosanna's dad was a heroin addict and gang member in San Francisco. When Jesus Christ dramatically changed his life, he flipped the switch for his whole family and became a street preacher and outreach to the down, the out, the rejected, the disrespected and championed their value and dignity. What's it like, though, to grow up in "The Tenderloin" district of San Fransisco, witness a homicide when you're nine, and think church is about bringing your bottles and needles? She'll open your eyes and hearts! Check out this week's message and the discussion with Rick, Barry, and Sean.

"Life is not a dress rehearsal," John Maxwell remembers his dad saying. And it's true. We need to figure out, as soon as possible, how and in what way we will make the contribution that God intends for us to make during our life. Long or short - it doesn't matter; it's what we did with that time.

In this message, Pastor Barry Anderson pulls out the stops to talk about the stewardship of our talents and why - if it matters to God, it better matter to us!

The day is coming. It may be the last day you work at your job, or the day you wave goodbye to your child (now an adult), or the last day you live in your "earth suit" ... but the day is coming. Will you be able to smile, look out and say, "I did it! No regrets! No sour feelings! My new plan awaits me ... " Like it or not, we are practising the passing of that baton well ... or not so well. The choice is ours to make.

In his final message of the Passing the Baton Series, Rick extends the conversation a bit more with Sean to reveal valuable insights into how to properly pass the baton.

When Jesus ascended to heaven, do you think he was worried? Did he have second thoughts? No, he'd been clear many times that his plans were much larger. "I tell you the truth, " he said, "It is for your good that I am going away." (John 16:7) The Lord Jesus Christ - the smartest, most powerful, most creative person in the Universe - basically said, "Nothing can beat my succession plan!" And so he entrusted it to his disciples - and by succession - to you and me. What do you think about that? What does that mean for your life? In this podcast, Rick and Sean discuss those very things! "People can project success," writes Lyle Tard, "but you cannot project significance. We all know what they both look like, but significance can’t be faked. We can feel significance — we know its tangible effect and it lasts."

Recently a teenager asked their aged grandparents about growing up. "Well, back in my day, we didn’t watch TV while we ate dinner. We actually talked to each other. It was awful."

While we chuckle at things like that, what isn't funny is what happens when don't talk about inevitabilities that carry huge consequences: like "If this job or career isn't what you want to stay in, how do you transition out?" or "I own my own business - here's my plan when I retire or die." or "I haven't really thought about retirement ... and it's coming within a decade ..."

Succession doesn't have to be scary - it's actually exciting because it's good stewardship. Listen-in on this great conversation about how King David passed on the Kingdom to his son Solomon.

We're all an interim something - what matters is if we realize that and plan and live our life accordingly.

Have you ever thought of that? That your current job or role in life will not stay the same - that one day it comes to an end. We all think of "retirement" as something we do when when we don't do what we're doing now. But retirement is not a place - it's a door. What does that door lead to?

In this episode, Rick blends the Bible's teaching on how leaders transition, how that applies to his own transition out of being the founding/senior pastor at Grace, and - just as important - what that means for you and me today!

This is a little longer than usual, but you'll be fascinated and perhaps shocked by what you hear.

The great philosopher and catcher for the New York Yankees, Yogi Berra, once said, "If you don't know where you are going, you might wind up someplace else."

At this time in 2016, you could have bought stock in a certain electric car company for $47 a share. Let's say that you bought 100 shares - about $5,000. It sat for a while - finally in December of 2019, you thought: "enough is enough. It's only grown by $10 - I'm selling!" and you make $1,000. Nice. But if you had waited until November of this year, you would have earned $ 122,000. That's a 2,300% increase! Some things, you must wait for. Some things you must take advantage of. The same is true of following Jesus, the light of the world. It's not that there aren't better options - it's that there are NO other options. It's not that other systems don't mean well, it's that no one is listening, no one is coming to the rescue. Just Jesus. That is Christmas. Don't miss this last crucial podcast of the year!

Where were you on March 5, 1979? Well, Voyager 1 was 499 million miles away taking the very first closeup picture of Jupiter. Voyager 1 and its brother, Voyager 2, were both part of a something called The Grand Tour of the outer planets. It's a remarkable story that you need to check out here or on video. The images they captured have helped form the philosophy of space missions, ever since.

Now what's amazing is that after their initial mission was over, they were flung out of the solar system ... to who knows where. Headed by Carl Sagan, they made gold discs with instructions on how to play them. It included photos, videos, and a message of peace.

But what did God do? He didn't send a probe or a disc - he sent a Person.

If you go to the Lower Cave at Carlsbad Caverns, they will do something shockingly special.  You'll get in an absolutely pitch black portion of the lower cave, and then the guide will tell you to turn off your headlamp.  It is the strangest sensation to not see even the slightest light.  You can put your hand right in front of your face and not see it.  And there's no ambient noise.  Some thought it was peaceful - I found it confusing to the point of terror.

Meet Keila Acosta. In 2004, Grace Community Church had the opportunity to help send Dr. Mark and Karen Andrews to evangelize and plant churches in the beautiful country of Panama. It was there that they met Jerry and Keila Acosta, who had grand and clever thoughts about helping local churches regain a healthy and reproductive vision of Latin America. Eventually, Mark and Karen returned to the United States, but Jerry and Keila became even more important in Grace's extension of our Mission of making disciples "to the ends of the earth".

It may not surprise you - then again, it might - that the Living Your Dash podcast is only an extension of ministries at Grace. The "meat and potatoes" of Rick Hale's teaching ministry and leadership are at the local church level as we help people find and fulfill God's purpose for their lives. But he didn't get there alone. As Moses had Zipporah, Acquilla had Priscilla, Peter had ... Mrs. Peter(?). Rick has Mary. It could be argued that the spiritual DNA of thousands of people in Roswell and across the world has been powerfully altered or directly affect by this power couple.

In this episode, we're going to get a little glimpse of the values that made them, the decisions they intentionally made, and why the rest of us ought to pay attention.

One of the most distinctive characteristics of Christianity is that Jesus himself makes certain promises that are eternal and profoundly encompassing. Take, for instance, when he says: "Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light." Mt. 11:28-30. He is saying that he will categorically be there for you! He wants to help you and give you rest! Who else promises that - and stands behind his own compassion and love? Ever heard of "burying the hatchet"? It's an early American idiom of native American origin. When an accord was reached between two warring people or tribes, they would literally throw their fighting tomahawks in a river or lake, or bury and forget where it was. The idea was to never revisit the quarrel or think of using it again.

God's forgiveness is like that. Let us thank Him for that gift!

In this week's podcast, Rick and Sean discuss how even when we've been "repeat offenders" (and everyone has!) God leaves his wrath buried. His Son took care of it for us. Let's listen in on these important lessons of forgiveness.

When you hear the word "mercy" what comes to mind?  The dictionary defines it this way: "Compassion or forgiveness shown toward someone whom it is within one's power to punish or harm."  Mercy implies that a wrong has been committed.  Mercy isn't a right - it's a grace.  But, again, that implies there is a Grace-Giver.  Conventional wisdom tells us that is the God of the Bible - and you would be absolutely correct.  But we need to fully understand what that means, and the consequences of mercy needed, mercy given, and mercy received.  Don't miss this incredible NEW Series that Pastor Rick Hale is starting at Grace: The Miracle of Mercy!

There's a story of a thief who went to confession and wept before the priest, openly telling him everything but feeling that he couldn't stop - that it was too late to repent. He didn't even know why he was there. But he asked the priest, "Father - how does a thief stop being a thief?" The priest paused for a moment and told him: "The Gospel of Jesus transforms men like you and me. When does a thief stop being a thief? When he becomes someone else. Let Christ transform you."

Prayer. Every world religion has it. But what is it? Does it really make sense that the all-powerful, all-knowing, totally self-sufficient ONE in the Universe would care what we have to say? Rewards and kickbacks. We've become so used to them in our economy that sometimes we think it happens - and should happen - everywhere. Maybe even God's Kindom and "economy"! But we need to be sober about this: Yes, God does reward faithfulness - but we must be careful to not let that be our motivation. What should be our motivation? As a species, humans have done incredible things! Medically, we've invented CT and PET scanners, developed antibiotics and monoclonal antibody treatments and mapped out our genome; the internet made all knowledge free and accessible; we have the technology to predict the weather, volcanoes, earthquakes; we can sail, fly, or travel with relative ease. We've even gone to the moon!

Yet for all our advances, the most basic needs of the heart and soul - the insatiable yearning and hungering for purpose and meaning - hamstrings the richest, the strongest, the young, the old ... we are no better than the day Adam and Even took the fruit that sent us spiraling down. In fact, we're worse - sometimes unspeakably worse.

But the Gospel! The Good News is that Jesus would rather die than leave us without a path and empowerment to release us from the chains of our hurts, habits, and hang-ups. That's Celebrate Recover! That's the focus of our podcast!

That's right - for about $200 extra, you can jump ahead of the poor hoveled masses who didn't have the cash to pay! Isn't that great? 😳

And we see this in our culture in many places: if you "pay to play" you can get in earlier, get more swag, or generally get greater access.

If you think that culture carries over into the Kingdom, get ready for disappointment. Jesus made it very clear: that's not how it works.

Don't forget to check out this very important message by Rick, then join us in the podcast as we discuss this foundational component of this secret of the culture of the Kingdom!

“God loves you unconditionally, as you are and not as you should be," wrote Brennan Manning, "because nobody is as they should be.” And that's the truth. That is the Gospel. In this podcast, Rick and Sean discuss the powerful love of God, a love so powerful, that we can almost get a shadow-glimpse that even God was caught off his heels. (Wait - can that be said?) Or as Manning stated, “I could more easily contain Niagara Falls in a tea cup than I can comprehend the wild, uncontainable love of God.”

What is the Kingdom of God like? Jesus lets us know. It's about a father who loves his kids differently but the same. If you ever thought you were too far gone, too bad, too unfaithful, too inconsistent, too self-righteous, too prone to failure ... add one more: you're too wrong! Here's the easy fix: get it right - just turn around! The Father is right there!

Don't miss this powerful message and strangely beautiful podcast!

How do you explain to people that the greatest rescue mission in the history of history is found in the Bible?  You may not believe it, but that's all the Bible is: a rescue mission, not a religion.  But most people don't see that.  It's easy to see why: Isn't the Bible about belief in God and what that means?  Yes.  But more importantly, it's what God has always purposed to do: redeem his fallen creation.   Jesus Christ got to the heart of the matter by using a couple of stories called parables to convey the passion God has for his fallen creation.

Tim Ferris commented, “Focus on being productive instead of busy.”  But the average disciple's behavior reveals that being a "busy Christian" is the same thing as being a productive Christian.  That's not necessarily so.  We need wisdom to keep us from "idle busyness" (and certainly not "idol busyness"!) and help us to focus on what we're truly going to be held accountable for.

In this podcast, Sean interviews Rick after his last message and it reveals some alarming things - if we pay enough attention.  Buckle your seatbelts - this is an exciting podcast!

Teaching by storytelling is powerful. Organizational psychologist Peg Neuhauser found that learning which stems from a well-told story is remembered more accurately, and for far longer than learning derived from facts and figures. In fact, psychologist Jerome Bruner’s research suggests that facts are 20 times more likely to be remembered if they’re part of a story.

This is nothing new to people who have heard the teachings of Jesus. People who are not even Christ-followers can still piece together at least the gist of some of the stories that the Lord Jesus masterfully told.

In this episode, Rick and Sean discuss The Parable of the Good Samaritan, based on Rick's message. There's a lot that is familiar with the passage, but if slow down and pay attention, we'll find we're not looking at an imaginary character, but ourselves. Don't miss this episode!

Ever heard the phrase "They can't see the forest for all the trees"?  We don't like to admit it, but our presumptions, projected settlements - and naked prejudices - stand in the way of God's purposes in our lives.  It requires hitting the pause button and reassessing, listening to the Master.  Filling in for Rick on July 11th, Pastor Chris VanDyke used a hidden gem of a story that Jesus told to get his audience to listen.  To find that message, make sure you click the link below.  Then, Rick comes back in and talks about the upcoming message (#10 in the series) and about our special offering for Bixby Church.

Religion is popular because - amongst other things - it gives a framework of a philosophy of life and living instead of groping around without any foundation or value. People often mistake Christianity for simply another religion in the marketplace, never considering that Jesus NEVER intended to spark a "religion", per se, but to demand absolute trust and faithfulness in himself. And in his parables, he beautifully and cleverly describes his Kingdom and its influence. He ALWAYS knew that the Kindom would change the world, and the world couldn't stop it. That's what Pastor Kevin Price talked about in his message that you can listen to below.

But in this week's podcast, Sean has a few questions to satisfy his curiosity.

Kingdom Secrets Series #7 - Do you ever get tired of waiting on God? Impatient with injustice or evil?

That was the question posed by Pastor Rick Hale. Of course, no one wants to wait. It's been scientifically proven that it takes an enormous amount of self-discipline to delay gratification and that marketing teaches and reinforces us from an early age to crave more and hunger more and expect more. So when Jesus Christ tells us that the harvest IS coming ... but we have to wait. Well, that poses a problem! It's not just what we wait for but who we wait for. You need to listen to this outstanding message, then listen in on this great podcast.

Because the Church encompasses the globe and fully 1/3rd of humanity claims to be Christians, it's easy to make assumptions that the growth of the church happened by hook or crook. But why should we assume that Jesus the Christ, the author of the parables we're looking at in this current series ever thought his parables would endure? Jesus stayed within a 200-mile radius around Israel, never commissioned or penned a book, never held public office, or went to a great academic school of the time. He really shouldn't be that significant according to certain criteria - but he most certainly is! One thing that he "predicted": The Gospel would go around the world (and it has!) and as we see in the message Rick taught, it would mean big changes. And the keen listener will understand their place and their responsibility. Want to know more? You should! Check out this fascinating conversation between Rick and Sean.

We all know that when you plant a seed in the ground and the soil has reasonably good conditions for growth, that seed will germinate. But did you ever ask yourselves, "WHY?" Not simply because it's genetically encoded that way (not a simple fact, when you consider the molecular complexity of it all), but because the Encoder - God our Father - designed it that way for a purpose. "Seeds represent the future," said guest speaker Sean Lee on June 13th, "a future that God has always planned. The same is true for plants. The same is true for you and me." Listen in on this interesting conversation from Sean's message on the Parable of the Growing Seed!

It has been said that only two things like change: Babies and Lightbulbs.

But for the disciple of Jesus Christ, change - directed change, strategic transformation - are the building blocks we fill up with the time God gives us. Or we allow it to lie derelict.

Ever heard the phrase: "If you're not confused, you're not paying enough attention." While surrendering yourself as a disciple to Jesus Christ IS the wisest and best decision you'll ever make, there should be sober moments in your life where you are crystal clear about what he demands of you. It's not cheap, it's not easy, it's ALWAYS beneficial, and it requires a lot of thought and - paradoxically - self-leadership. Yes, he leads you - he's the Master! But you must make fundamental decisions in line with what he says and where he guides. That's how it works. This past week's message in Rick's fantastic series, Kingdom Secrets talks about that. BUT in this podcast, we discuss the issues of self-leadership in getting there. You won't want to miss this interesting take on this week's podcast!

"The Kingdom of God is like ..." With those words, the Lord Jesus introduced many mini-stories to paint a picture of what God's Kingdom and reign looks like. They are called parables.

Many teachers used - and still use - parables. But no one used them like Jesus. Even after two millennium, phrases like "the prodigal son" or "pearl of great price" still have meaning. It's crossed continents, cultures, and oceans, and The Master still teaches. The most learned theologians still dig them for ore and the youngest child can find meaning.

We would do well to look carefully at what Jesus says - Pastor Rick Hale does a lot of the heavy lifting for us!

In this episode, we discuss why parables are so powerful and the meaning behind just two, simple, stories. Make sure you listen to the message!

Columnist and humorist Dave Barry wrote: “When trouble arises and things look bad, there is always one individual who perceives a solution and is willing to take command. Very often, that person is crazy.” Crazy or not, we need leadership. Blessed are the people who have a good leader!

What's interesting is that in this last installment of his latest series, Rick argues that if we want to experience the good life, we've got to have good leadership - as well as good followship. (No, that's not a typo!)

The Good Life will cost you. But then again, something is going to cost you. It was Stephen Covey who wrote: "I am not a product of my circumstances. I am a product of my decisions."

In 1962, a quartet of scruffy young musicians when to Decca records to see if they were interested in recording and distributing them. "No," they replied, unimpressed with the lads from Liverpool: "Guitar bands had had their day and that isn't going to change anytime soon. Then there's the name: they can't even spell the word ‘beetle’." EMI would later form a powerful and financially bountiful relationship with Paul, John, George and Ringo.

Decca lost out to EMI not because of circumstances, but because of their decisions.

It's the same for disciples: there is a cost involved - but there's a purpose to the price, an eye toward a prize. Wise is the one who desires The Good Life and pays the price to enter into it!

She has been called "the apostle to the Apostles" ("apostle" literally means "sent one") because she announced the Resurrected Jesus to the Twelve. Not only was she "just a mere woman", but she had the nasty reputation of being (formerly!) demon-possessed ... but she's mentioned 13 times in Bible, and was so faithful and devoted to Jesus, she risked life and limb to simply be near him - even more so than the Twelve.

In this week's podcast, Rick and Sean have a discussion on this amazing woman - and how she still teaches us to be more faithful in our walk with Christ.

“There is a theory" quipped Douglas Adams, the science fiction author of The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy, "which states that if ever anyone discovers exactly what the Universe is for and why it is here, it will instantly disappear and be replaced by something even more bizarre and inexplicable. There is another theory which states that this has already happened.” Adams' satire, aside, it may seem like the search for significance in one's life is a lot like chasing after a ping pong ball with oven mits on.

But Jesus never put it that way. Jesus had the rare ability to state definitively what the purpose of life was and how to go about it. He said so himself: "Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock." Simply audacious statement, don't you think? Unless you happened to be the Son of God who raised from the dead. Then, it's just simply true.

Wrapping up his thoughts on Raising the Bar, Rick and Sean discuss the final message he gave on March 28. Make sure you check the link below to watch it.

If you're catching this after April 4th, we pray you had a wonderful day of wonder and worship, as you ponder the enormity and consequence of the Resurrection of Jesus, the only begotten Son of God.

"The proof is in the pudding..." have you hard that? Actually, that's not quite right: The actual phrase is: "The proof of the pudding is in the eating."  In other words, just having the right ingredients, delicious picture on the box, and a famous spokesman doesn't mean it's good.  Do people buy and and consume it?  Well, when it comes to The Bride of Christ, and what our Lord commands, the proof is when people see us "eating" what we say we consume.  Are we?  Are YOU?  In this fun conversation where the tables are turned, Rick interviews Sean about his recent message out of Colossians 3:15-17.

“Clothes make the man,"  wrote Twain. "Naked people have little or no influence on society.”  Obviously written in the absurd to elicit a chuckle, there's truth to it, both metaphorically and literally.  How one "dresses" oneself, says a lot about their inward character - how they see themselves and how they want to be seen.

In this podcast, Sean discusses with Rick about his latest message in the series "Raising the Bar", and this week's focus on how we must raise the bar of serving others by raising the bar of the reckoning of our raiment.

In order to "live your dash" you need to know (a) where to start, (b) where to finish, and (c) acceptable behavior as you run. How would you like to run against someone who ignored the starting gun and ran when they wanted or pushed you down so they could get ahead, or ran in your lane? Not much of a race, right? There are rules to be followed because the Course Marshall knows what works best. In the race of life - the Dash of our Life - God has already set up the rules. Believe it or not, there aren't many - just ten - and they are simple to understand. Following ... well, that's another story and why some people work very hard to keep them on courthouse lawns.

In this week's podcast, we talk with our guest speaker for the week of February 21st, Student Ministries Pastor, Chris VanDyke, and we dive a bit deeper into the blessings and protections that God gives us in His Ten Commandments. Then, Rick comes back and lets us know about his next powerful series, Raising the Bar.

Can you finish this statement: "How do I love thee ..."? (If you answer: "... let me count the ways!", you win!)

That line was made famous by Elizabeth Barrett Browning, who, because her parent's violent disapproved of her choice of husband, poet, Robert Browning, had to wed secretly and move to Europe. She wrote them regularly - but she never once received a letter back.

One day, she received a parcel from the United States. It contained every letter she wrote - but not one had been opened. Her parents died never knowing the depth of her love and desire to patch things up. They were held captive by a bonds of bitterness of their own making.

Such is the power of UNforgiveness. But what of the power OF forgiveness? In his message this past week, Rick explores the powerful role forgiveness played in the early church and how forgiveness plays a uniquely important role in the present and future of the church.

NOTE: This is a new audio mix. No content was changed, but the sound engineer was lazy and didn't check the pause between the introduction and the first segment. He has since been fired. Sven is our new sound editor from Sweden.

When Jesus the Christ said the following words, we cannot possibly overstate what this means to humanity: “And whoever desires to be first among you, let him be your slave— just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many” (Matthew 20:27–28). It is a paradox: he challenges us to voluntary indentured servitude to each other. While the world is still busy trying to figure out how to "find the angle" or "get the competitive leverage" against each other, Jesus tells us: There's a way where everyone wins.

In this third aspect of the series Happy at Grace Community Church, Sean sits down with Pastor Alan Gedde, Grace's Pastor of Children's Ministries to talk about his recent message on "Serving One Another." Then, Rick gives us the half-time report and some upcoming things at Grace.

It was Will Rogers who said, "Diplomacy is the art of saying 'Nice doggie ...' until you can find a rock."

Patience and tolerance ... we all need it - and not just to get the advantage.  Here's a fact: learning to be patient, tolerant, and make allowances for others is not only a gift we give to others and ourselves (thus making it possible for us to be happy) but it might even set pleasant historical vectors in-place that span 20 centuries.

When Thomas Jefferson wrote the Declaration of Independence, he mentioned that we were endowed by our Creator with inalienable rights, which include: life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. And Americans DO spend time and money on that pursuit! But are Instagrammable experiences, possessions, and money the essence of happiness? Is happiness located only in pleasant circumstances? The Bible never makes that equivocation. In fact, it's universally recognized that real happiness can never be found by pleasing ourselves - it's about relationships.

That's why Rick is excited about this series. This week, Rick and Sean discuss the starting point: accepting people for who they are. You see, when the Bible commands us to "accept one another." Simple, right? Yes. Easy ... no - at least not always.

It was the Partridge Family (wow - is that dating me!) who sang "Come On and Get Happy", and Pharrell Williams inspired and made some great dance videos based on his song "Happy".  But - really - how do you "get" happy?  How do you define happiness?  What is the wisest, most fruitful means of finding - and giving - happiness in the world in which we live?  Given current circumstances, we are desperately in need to have answers to those questions.  Thankfully, God's Promises, found in his Word, supply just those answers.

In his brand new series, Happy, Pastor Rick Hale shares how happiness isn't all that elusive when we come to terms with the hindrances and true source of happiness.

After a month-long hiatus (thanks, COVID ... not really!), the Living Your Dash podcast returns!

Rick has been doing a Christmas mini-series called "The Greatest Story Ever Told" - and this week we unpack his message, "Announced by Angels."

Let's reframe things a bit by posing a question: What's the Greatest Story you've ever heard? The greatest that HUMANITY itself has ever heard? Some might say, "Well, that's hard to say - there are a lot of good ones." But consider: writers, philosophers, and literature teachers all conclude that a good story needs five things: a protagonist (a hero, a person on a journey), an antagonist (the villain, the person trying to defeat the protagonist), an inciting action - what sets the hero and villain ultimately colliding, the conflict (the battle, the fight, the hardships, the losses), and finally the resolution: who wins? What happens? Who says: "And they lived happily ever after?"

The Gospel - the greatest love story, the greatest rescue mission in HIStory (that's no typo!), the greatest teacher who clearly laid out the greatest philosophy and purpose of life ... it's all there! And as Rick mentions, sometimes we hear it so much, it loses its vitality. So that's what we're going to talk about today!

A "masterpiece" is defined as "a work of outstanding artistry, skill, or workmanship."  If I say "Mona Lisa", you would say DaVinci; If I said, "Starry Night", you'd say VanGogh; if I said Stradivarious, you'd say violin.  You get the picture.

But what if I said, YOUR name?  Would you immediately get the picture of God the Father smiling with great delight, and getting excited as he describes the work and details He's put into your life?  If you don't, you should!  Eph 2:10 says it all too plainly.

Emotional health is facing reality at any cost."  Whether we're self-aware of it or not, NO ONE goes untouched by the negative - or postitive - labels that others have placed on us.  It can lead to powerful transformation, or shackle us in insecurity, projected fault-finding, paranoia, suffering silently in ignorance - and worst of all: we miss out on the great opportunities that God has for us.  But it doesn't have to be that way!

The events of 2020 have caused a lot of us to long for resolve of one kind or another.  Anger and anxiety are the fruit of unresolved frustration.  But it doesn't have to be that way.  David, inspired by the Holy Spirit, encouraged us in Psalm 27:14 "Wait for the Lord; be strong and take heart and wait for the Lord", that doesn't make it easier.  So, if obeying and honoring the Lord is what we want to purchase, then patience is the currency.

Perhaps it's just our perception, but it seems as if every time you open the news, or check social media, we're reminded of how hopeless our world is.  We sigh, complain and flame - but is it helpful?  Are things truly as bad as they are?   Even if they are, how can God's Word, through the prophet Habakkuk, show us that no matter how grim things look God knows how to make hope even brighter?  In this week's podcast, Sean fires some questions to Rick about his message on Sept. 13th, about finding hope in unsure times.  You can find this message by going to roswellgrace.com and clicking on the "watch" tab.

The Christian Bible is, without doubt, the most published and best-selling book in history  ... and yet, 35% of Americans say they never think about using the Bible outside of Sunday and only 9% read the Bible daily.  If faith comes by hearing and hearing from the word of Christ ... the great pandemic of 2020 is the least of our problems.  This past week, our Student Ministries Pastor, Chris VanDyke, gave the main message on Sunday  highlighting how you and I need to remain on the True Branch, Jesus Christ - and that necessitates God's Word.  Sean fires off a few questions to clarify what that means.   Sean also takes a brief moment to ask Rick about this next series that Pastor Rick has cooked up for us.  Bring a fork: it's time to dig into God's Word!  To hear Chris' message, click HERE.  You can also find all kinds of information about Grace on our website.

Did you know that 14.8 million Americans suffer from depression and anxiety?  That's 6.7% of our population.  And with the advent of the coronavirus epidemic, those numbers have jumped significantly.  In fact, the CDC recently reported this past June that 40% of American adults have been struggling with mental health or substance abuse.  In this week's Living Your Dash podcast, Sean discusses Pastor Alan Gedde's recent message out of Ps. 88, and how depression and anxiety hit home when his eldest daugher, Harmony, suffered an accute bout of depression with some frightening results.  Adding more perspective to the mix is Brenda Lee (Sean's wife), who has had a long-time struggle with depression and anxiety.  But we also discussed how God always gives hope in this darkness.

Elizabeth Elliott Gren was 30 years old with a one-year-old when her first husband Jim Elliott was martyred - speared to death - by an indigenous tribe because they feared for their lives. Years later, instead of being filled with fear, bitterness, and disappointment, she wrote: "The deepest things that I have learned in my own life have come from the deepest suffering. And out of the deepest waters and the hottest fires have come to the deepest things that I know about God." It is a mystery how life events can make us think that God doesn't love or care for us - but in this fifth and final question from Pastor Rick's Five Big Questions, Rick helps give clarity and a firm answer to the question: Will God love me or desert me?

In Roman's chapter 8, inspired by the Holy Spirit, Paul is wrapping up his thoughts on the will, work, and ways of God.  Instead of making some summary statements, he instead poses five questions to his audience.  This was no accident.  He intended for us to think deeply about it, and to make the logical consequences of those truths.  What are these important truths?  That's the focus of Pastor Rick Hale's brand new sermon series, Five Big Questions.  This week, Pastor Rick and Sean discuss the most basic and foundational of the questions: Is God for me, or Against me?

Dr. Dallas Willard wrote: "Every great teacher must teach about the nature of reality; what is real and what isn’t. It’s assumptions about reality that drive our lives ... Reality is God’s work, not ours; we don’t get to construct truth." And yet, if we know nothing else about humans, we are addicted to creating the Universe into our own acceptability. But for the disciple, we called to take note and take action; it's easy to be influenced by our culture, so we must know the clear boundary markers because the real-world consequences are profoundly and powerfully influential.

A remarkable tenet - and one very specific to Christianity - is the second coming of the Lord Jesus Christ. Did you know that no other world religion has its founder boldly, conspicuously, and repeatedly saying he will personally and bodily return? Worldly culture would like to relegate Jesus to simply being a "moral teacher"; but he boldly claimed so much more! It's as if he were taunting us to pay attention - and that everything hinges on being prepared. If anything says that he is either a liar or a lunatic - or Lord - it's this one thing. But he warned us: we won't know when - so we need to ALWAYS be ready! In this penultimate lesson in the series Rock Solid, Pastor Rick Hale discusses the importance the second coming has in not only as it relates to a disciple's biblical worldview, but how it should fundamentally alter our intentions, plans and goals.

In 2 Timothy, Paul wrote these last words to his protege: "But as for you, continue in what you have learned and have become convinced of, because you know those from whom you learned it, and how from infancy you have known the holy Scriptures, which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus."

Just as in the first century, the disciple of Jesus today must stand for truth in contrast to the fruitless and vapid philosophies of our day. Have you ever had the thought: "You know, I really don't need to go to church or be any more spiritual if I go to church?" Sure you have! Most people from time-to-time forget - or have at best a poor or misinformed view - about God's intentions and plans for humanity. Rick Warren put it well: "The church is indestructible and will exist for eternity. It will outlive this universe, and so will your role in it. The person who says, “I don’t need the church,” is either arrogant or ignorant. The church is so significant that Jesus died on the cross for it. " In this week's episode, Rick and Sean go a bit deeper after Rick's message on the 21st and find important nuggets of truth about God's Church.

Would it make a difference if you believed that God The Holy Spirit wasn't a person, but a symbol or entity? That's the supposition of a naturalist or atheistic evolutionist. We all have our favorite "dad" sayings - here's mine to my kids: "Often, it's not WHAT you know but WHO you know that makes the difference." You might be the smarter candidate or more knowledgeable about something, but if you don't have ACCESS to INFLUENCE, your resume stays at the bottom, your voice never gets heard, your name never gets mentioned. So when we think about eternal things: there's only ONE person we want representing us and acknowledging us: That's Jesus. But do we have a proper, biblical understanding of Jesus? Or is it based on the error-riddled, negatively-biased opinion of what culture says?

In this episode, Rick and Sean discuss the contents of Rick's message on May 31st, proving that it's essential to start with a Biblical view of JESUS if we're going to have a living relationship with him.

Jesus wrapped up His Sermon on the Mount by saying "everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock." No one should live their lives in fear or insecurity. We need to begin with the Author of life and truth - and that's God!

In this episode, Rick and Sean discuss a bit more deeply the contents of Rick's message on May 24th, proving that it's essential to start with a Biblical view of God before if we're going to have a Biblical Worldview.

In this episode: Rick and Sean discuss re-opening Grace for public worship and discuss this past week's message. A characteristic of the People of God is that - for the most part - we stay under the radar: 1 Tim. 2:2 says that living peaceful and quiet lives should be our desire. But there are times when we must boldly stand in opposition to the world, and boldly ask for the power and movement of God. It's not about an arrogant assumption, but a holy, humble, but insistent faith in God's stated promises. This week, Rick and Sean discuss this kind of bold praying. We wonder: is this something you are maturing in? Because you never know when you will be called on to pray boldly. And as John Wooden said, "When opportunity comes, it's too late to prepare." May we all be preparing now!

EM Bounds was an attorney, Civil War chaplain, and pastor who wrote this about the power of prayer: "God's plan is to make much of the man, far more of him than of anything else. Men are God's method. The Church is looking for better methods; God is looking for better men. ” By men, he meant "mankind", of course - but the catalyst of God changing people - of God changing history - is prayer. This week, Rick and Sean look back at his message on the dynamic power of prayer in the life of Daniel, giving us insight on how God strengthens and prepares us for serving him.

Also, Rick has great news about Grace's re-establishment of public gatherings THIS Sunday May 17th - make sure you check out the website for details.

What gives a person the courage to stand up to the ruler of a nation and tell him they're wrong about everything - and they were invited to do so? This week, Rick and Sean discuss the importance of the unseen "homework/soul work" that Christians must do - and why we're woefully unprepared. But it doesn't have to be that way!

Also, Rick gives us an update on what we can expect when Grace "opens up" for public services.

It was William Shakespeare who wrote: "Some are born great, some achieve greatness, and some have greatness thrust upon 'em."  But when it comes down to it, we'd rather read about it or see it in the movies rather than have our necks on the line.  But when we trust God to write our story, it becomes a pleasure and honor - besides, we can't lose!  Listen, as Rick and Sean discuss his last message in his Courage series.

In this episode, Rick discusses the necessity of disciples yielding the foundation of their worldview to God that leads to the natural consequences of a life that is pleasing to him. It was a Biblical worldview that gave courage to Daniel to resolve not to be conformed to his world, but instead firmly insist on God's pattern for his life - no matter what the circumstances. Is your worldview biblical? Will it stand the test of time? IS IT standing the test of time in these current circumstances? Join Rick and Sean as they discuss this important basic of courage.

In this episode, Rick and Sean discuss Grace's new series called “How to enjoy the rest of your life” and based on this week's message, the importance of Godly friendships in our lives. It's a fallacy that having a great many acquaintances means we're connected.  Mature, life-giving friendships take time to develop and self-reflection to keep ourselves honest.  In fact, we can't fulfill the Great Commission - the ONE important purpose for humanity - without being in loving relationships with others in a local church.  Sound unbelievable?  Check it out!

Barry also touches on how God made every member a minister (shocker!) and how to find your "sweet spot" in expressing the ministry he called you to.

The most important question a person should ask of a prospective church is: "What's your plan in fulfilling the Lord Jesus Christ's Great  Commission to his Church?"  Maybe you've never considered that as important?  In this episode: Sean asks questions based on Rick's message on November 17th.  Entitled "A Church Plant That Plants Churches", Rick chose to look at the church of Antioch as the prototype for all churches that intentionally purposed to live out the Great Commission (Mt. 28:18-20).
