This week on the Doc and Guru Podcast we look back on the year that was. The highlights. The lowlights. And the absence of lights.

As is always the case in South Africa it has been a roller coaster of a marketing and media ride in 2022. So as we prepare to recharge the batteries this holiday season (literally and figuratively) and to reflect on the inevitable challenges that lie ahead in 2023, the Doc and Guru Podcast team would like to thank you all for taking the time to listen, and for joining in the discussion this year.

Have a wonderful break.

And remember. The real problems only start when people stop talking to each other.

Let’s keep talking!

“It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of marketing wisdom, it was the age of advertising foolishness, it was the epoch of media belief, it was the epoch of procurement incredulity, it was the season of light, it was the season of darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair. We had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way”.

With apologies to Charles Dickens and my matric English teacher.

This week on the Doc and Guru Podcast we say farewell to advertising and marketing industry stalwart Yvonne Johnston as she relocates to a new life in Majorca. Or is that Malta?

Yvonne reflects on her early days in advertising and media, and her journey from media planner to founding CEO of BrandSA, and now highly successful Self-Mastery and Leadership Coach.

Yvonne’s journey is a testimony to the power of constantly expanding your knowledge, reinventing yourself and always preparing for the next challenge.
If you’re tired of outsourcing your career join us this week on the #DocAndGuru podcast as we discover what’s next for Yvonne Johnston. And maybe what’s next for you as we all reflect on the challenges and opportunities for us as a nation, and as individuals, in 2023.

Bon Voyage Yvonne. It’s been a pleasure sailing with you these past 30 something years. What a journey it’s been.

Whether you prefer to call them GenZ or Born Frees there’s no getting away from the fact that there are a lot of them in South Africa, and they are shaping the way we think about advertising brands and creating content.

This week on the Doc and Guru podcast we chat with Dalene Muller - Head: Media Intelligence AdSpace 24 – about the recently published AdSpace24 qualitative report on GenZ -The Real Facts.

The global resurgence of interest in qualitative research and ethnography is fuelled by the growing realisation that we need to view branding and advertising in context. Agile qualitative insights are not a substitute for big numbers, but they do go a long way towards explaining the numbers that we already have.

Bound by their compulsion to engage with social media but conflicted by their growing disconnection from these very same platforms, Born Frees in South Africa mirror many of the insights being reported about GenZ globally.
Their orientation toward brands with integrity and advertising with purpose.

A growing re-evaluation of the role of paid influencers.

The need to balance life, work and branded aspirations
There is also an undisputed desire to engage with trusted content sources and media with a conscience.

GenZ will give you their attention - BUT! You have to earn it.
Whether you call them #GenZ or #BornFree - what’s in a name? A brand by any other name would smell as sweet. Unless you live in Cape Town of course.
Join us for this week’s episode of the Doc and Guru Podcast for our conversation about The World according to GenZ.

We discuss all of these and a whole lot more on this week’s The DOC & The GURU Podcast, as we welcome Melanie Sarjoo into the studio. Having just finished a 5-year stint at a major advertising group, Melanie shares her experiences as well as ideas on her New Next.

We chat about how change brings growth and new opportunities – if you are open to it. On DEI, Melanie asks why there aren’t more women heading up the creative function, or for that matter, the entire agency and what can be done about this. She also touches on her personal journey and shares about the Foundation for Inclusive Education and urges that more people with disabilities be employed in the advertising and media industry.

We also touch on culture, remote work, and the importance of understanding and embracing the human side of business; with heart and compassion, whilst showing up differently. With some of her life’s lessons…

So, this is again another end-to-end episode of The DOC & The GURU Podcast that you really don’t want to miss.

As you have come to expect with The DOC & The GURU Podcast, this week is again action-packed as we cover a host of interesting and critically-important topics, when chatting with Jayson Naidoo and Vivien Katzav of the newly-formed Blanchard South Africa.

From the classic and best-selling ‘The One Minute Manager’, Ken Blanchard and his team at The Ken Blanchard Companies have built one of the world’s leading training and development companies over the past 40 years; that is now even easier to access than ever before.

In this episode, we cover both generic and SA-specific challenges as well as some of the world-class educational products and services that are available (in multiple formats). Our chat includes government and societal ills, the corporate market, student engagement, iconic leadership, and are you truly a Servant Leader (listen in to take the quiz) as well as a whole lot more…

With the ongoing challenge to nurture great leaders for today and tomorrow, Blanchard continues to invest in research and design around leadership. In taking this message around the country, Viv is presenting ‘Leadership Malpractice – A South African Perspective’ at a free business breakfast next week. So, if you are in the JHB area, this is a great opportunity to get a sense of what Blanchard can offer you and your company (the link is in the comments below to reserve a seat).

So, as we always say - be part of the conversation and don’t miss out, by listening to another great episode of The DOC & The GURU Podcast.

This week on the Doc and Guru podcast we chat with Nkgabiseng Motau Chief Creative Officer at Think Creative Africa and Jury President of the Pendoring Awards 2022. Nkabiseng is joined in studio by Eben Keun General Manager of the #PendoringAwards22 and Chief Brand Architect of Breinstorm Brand Architects.

Originally created in 1995 to promote and stimulate the use of Afrikaans in advertising, Pendorings has continued its evolution towards fully inclusive linguistic and cultural representation. And they have UNESCO endorsement to prove it. The awards are now open to all indigenous languages and extend beyond advertising to include inter alia books, music videos and social media content.

More than 60 years ago Marshal McLuhan coined the phrase that has done so much to commoditize media and fuel the race to the bottom for cultural and contextual nuance in advertising.
The medium is the message.
But if we are to succeed with fundamental transformation in advertising and media, or better still transfiguration, then we need to embrace a new reality. When it comes to cultural expression in advertising and media the new reality is that
The message is the medium.

The World Federation of Advertisers (WFA) guide to Diversity and Representation outlines 4 clear themes to explore for DEI
•Inclusive Audience Planning
•Supporting Diverse Voices
•Balancing Brand Safety
•Measuring Success
In a fractious and increasingly divided South Africa, fostering a diversity of voices is a critical imperative.

Join us this week on the Doc and Guru Podcast as we pose the question to the Pendoring Award team
Can we really have sustainable industry transformation without fostering cognitive and cultural diversity?

This week on the Doc and Guru podcast we chat with Lynne Krog - Senior Research Strategist and Kamogelo Aphane - Corporate Affairs Manager at Spark Media about the release of their latest media and marketing database ROOTS 8.0

Under its various noms du rechercher ROOTS research has been conducted regularly since the ‘80s. The latest release ROOTS 8.0 dissects at a granular level the media consumption and retail behaviour of 97 communities across key economically active areas in South Africa.

23,000 interviews were conducted with people who receive a local community paper that is either delivered to the home, sold or bulk distributed, and the database delivers insights into the lives of over 9 million adults living in 3,9 million homes.

From Polokwane to Plett.

The increasingly problematic limitations of traditional F2F research, particularly under-reading at the top end of the market, have necessitated a new hybrid research methodology for ROOT 8.0. But as Lyn Krog puts it there has been “an evolution in the way we asked the questions – not an evolution in the questions themselves”. So ROOTS 8.0 stacks very neatly on top of its predecessors in building a solid foundation for effective advertising and media planning in the retail landscape.

How has Covid19 changed the retail landscape?

On the eve of Black Friday is ‘Deal Hunting’ still a function of Have-not Households only?

And what is really happening in Phuzamaritzburg?

To find out, listen in to this episode of the #DocAndGuru podcast and find out how you can access agile and actionable insights from this important #OpenSource marketing and media database from Spark Media.
Let’s keep talking!

This week on the Doc and Guru podcast we chat with Arabang Makaza - Senior Manager Media Strategy, Planning & Buying at MTN - about her journey across the South African media landscape since the first dawn of democracy in South Africa.

The launch of Pepsi in the early 90s was a defining moment for the local marketing and media industry. Centred on an unswerving commitment to grass roots empowerment, from informal trade distribution to advertising messaging, and even the structure of the agency team, Pepsi laid down a marker for their brand vision in the New South Africa.

And Arabang was part of the Pepsi vision from Day 1.

In this episode you can find out just how we have fared with respect to empowerment over the past 3 decades. Much is being made in the industry about the need to for people to “pass the baton” of media skills but is enough being done to ensure that the next generation is actually ready to run the next leg of the media relay without dropping baton? As Alice in Wonderland said to the MAC Charter

"It takes all the running you can do, to keep in the same place. If you want to get somewhere else, you must run at least twice as fast as that!"

Or was that the Mad Hatter?

Where does the baton change take place for media in a Full-Funnel media landscape? If you can’t do digital in a traditional way, is it equally fair to say you can’t do traditional in a digital way? Indeed, when it comes to the Metaverse things get curiouser and curiouser said Arabang.

Stay grounded. Stay curious. Arabang Makaza talks about the importance of doing media with passion and setting out to learn something new about your craft every day.

This week on the Doc and Guru Podcast we chat with the one of South Africa’s most experienced and well-respected media figures - Colin Ramparsadh Business Unit Manager at The MediaShop.

A great team player over the years, Colin is also a passionate and vociferous Liverpool supporter. It’s quite ironic then that the quiet man of media has over the years earned the respect of his peers by being, the undisputed champion of well-reasoned media decision making.

An equally avid Bollywood enthusiast, Colin has been passionate about movies from an early age. In fact Colin was “almost born in a cinema”, so it’s quite fitting that he started his media career with Cinemark during the golden age of cinema advertising.
In this podcast Colin Ramparsadh talks about his media journey over the past 4 decades and his technique for embracing change and remaining relevant in the new mediaverse.

Media strategists in South Africa are at a watershed moment.
In this #DocAndGuruPodcast with Colin Ramparsadh we reflect on the road ahead and some of the critical interventions that need to take place if we are truly going to embrace transformation and survive as a competitive media industry.
So when it comes to media strategy, can we continue to use linear models to explain and predict consumer media-behaviour, or should we be thinking in terms of concentric circles? Is it more important to keep your strawberries in a row or to play with the clay?

In fact, when we consider the continuing obsession many South African strategists have with media trends emerging from Western Europe and North America, rather than markets like India, Brazil and Indonesia, we need to pose the question – are we even playing with the right clay?

In the sporting world the one accolade that we reserve for the best of the best is that we refer to them by one name. Messi. Ronaldo. Rafa. Tiger.
So take a deep breath. Tune in. And listen to Colin this week on the #DocAndGuruPodcast.
Because for all of us in the media industry, there is only one Colin.

This week on the Doc and Guru Podcast we chat with Sadika Fakir – Integrated Media and Digital Director at Tiger Brands.

When it comes to media surely full funnel is simply that - full funnel? So at first glance a title like Integrated Media and Digital seems something of a contradiction in terms. To be sending out a mixed signal. A bit like asking for a boerewors roll at a vegan braai.

Whether it’s a financial juggernaut or a frisky FMCG mix, one of the pillars of successful client-side media management is facilitating open and agile engagement, not only with media agencies, but also with media owners.
Listen in and find out why, when it comes to corporate titles, all is not quite what it seems at first glance. Internal structures and internal processes are not always the same thing.

How do you take a technical specialisation like media – that is normally agency based – and start operating it in the corporate space? Is there a difference between managing an in-house media facility and managing the interface between 3rd party media-agency suppliers?

Sadika outlines some of the key performance criteria for effective channel strategy and for maintaining homeostasis between media creativity and robust procurement in the POE model.

Is the media planning process really just all about Brilliant Basics and is Brilliant Basics the same as being Best in Box?

This week on The DOC & The GURU podcast, we chat with Shobhana Ramachandran, the Global Client Director at Kantar in Amsterdam on the use of consumer insights and the growth of brands. So, if you would like to hear about how the world’s leading data, insights and consulting company moves businesses forward, then don’t miss this episode.

In a great discussion, we include topics like performance marketing versus continual brand-building, the Global Sustainability Sector Index that covers 38 sectors across 32 countries, as well as one of the most widespread pieces of insight that Kantar releases every year; BrandZ Top 100 rankings.

It’s a ranking of brands based on brand value – and Kantar’s BrandZ is unique in that it is the only ranking of brands in the world that connects the financial value of brands with consumer attitudes towards these brands. It is the largest brand building platform in the world covering 51 markets, 4.1 million consumer interviews, 500+ categories and > 19000 brands.

We also chat about a very interesting article by one of Shobhana’s colleagues in London, Dr. Nicki Morley, on innovation and brand growth, where brands perceived to be high on Innovation grow 7x faster than competitors.

Also listen to the end of The DOC & The GURU Podcast, where you will hear some very interesting career advice.

This week the Doc and Guru Podcast is in conversation with Tshifhiwa Mulaudzi – Managing Director of MSG Group Sales

Established as part of MSG Afrika Investment Holdings, with a vision to own and operate companies in broadcast media and content provision, MSG Group Sales represents two of Mzansi’s rising star radio stations Power 98,7 and Capricorn FM.

In reflecting on the heyday of media research in Mzansi, we pose the question “is Mzansi still the gateway to media research in Africa”?

As Tshif says, data is currency, but with a Masters in Research Psychology he is one of very few people in the media industry who is equipped to talk media research beyond the numbers. Is there too much emphasis on research reliability in a fragmented media landscape and not enough emphasis on validity? For instance trust is emerging as the critical catalyst for successful communication on radio.

At the end of the day though it’s all about commercialising an audience. Or is it? Radio is such an critical communication platform in Africa and South Africa that all radio stations carry a burden of PBS to some degree. Particularly going into an election.

Listen in and find out how MSG Group Sales goes go about building trust and engagement amongst the listeners of Power 98,7 and Capricorn FM.

Can you put a price on trust? Find out this week on The Doc and Guru Podcast.

Can you believe it – The DOC & The GURU Podcast celebrates 150 episodes this week! And we have another great two guests in studio, as we welcome Ayanda Mda and Papikie Seopa from the Nahana Communications Group to chat all about the important aspects of staff learning and development.

So if you would like to know what skills and attributes are needed to thrive in one of the biggest advertising and media groups, then this is the episode for you. Here Ayanda and Papi chat about the importance of curiosity (of both the industry and your clients’ business), agility and flexibility as you are open, keen and able to constantly learn new things, embracing diverse points of view and avoiding ‘boxing’ yourself in.

We also discuss the power of culture, living values, audacious sessions and how to ‘empower and empassion’. This all fits into a framework of exceptional processes that are constantly applied throughout the Group and married with great, thoughtful and compassionate leaders.

Again, it’s a great episode of The DOC & The GURU Podcast!

This week the Doc and Guru are in conversation with Strini Naicker - VP Commercial & Content Distribution for Paramount Africa.

Both as a media sales executive and a media strategist.

In this episode of the Doc and Guru podcast we examine developments in the content distribution and viewing sector, and try to identify the sweet spot between linear TV, BVOD and SVOD.

How should planners balance the cost implications of a strategic approach to building incremental reach, with the marketing procurement focus on gross impressions and the CPM bottom line? In this episode we discuss the importance of a having logical media process to guide media investment, deal-structuring and effective media planning in a multichannel landscape.

Established over many years as a leading audio and digital solutions company Mediamark represents some of South Africa’s most iconic radio stations - and in this episode of the Doc and Guru Podcast we’re joined by CEO Wayne Bischoff.

Through the recently launched COMMvibe community radio initiative in the Western Cape Kagiso Media and Mediamark are building on the foundation of the primary Kagiso Trust mandate to uplift and empower disadvantaged communities.

David Ogilvy once described radio as the Cinderella medium. But if we analyse community radio’s ability to act as an audio Stargate and to build trust and engagement in the very heart of a community, then maybe community radio is really the Sleeping Beauty medium - and COMMvibe is the handsome gender-neutral heir to the royal thrown.

All too often media strategy has become a matter of balancing enhanced niche engagement with audience volume, in macabre pas de deux with procurement.

But by aggregating community radio audiences in the Western Cape into cost-efficient packages that are designed to compensate for endemic under-delivery of TV campaigns in that region, COMMvibe has broken the spell and developed a powerful community radio collaboration which ticks all the right boxes. Media strategy and procurement alike.

In the past many community radio stations have been reluctant to participate in initiatives like this – how does the Kagiso Trust mandate engender trust in the partnership?

Is there a training component to the initiative?

How has Mediamark addressed traditional procurement shortcomings like proof of flighting?

Tune in to this episode of the Doc and the Guru Podcast and find out how you can use community radio not just to Mind the Gap but to Bridge the Gap.

This week on the Doc and Guru podcast we welcome into the studio Celia Collins, one of South Africa’s most respected media executives and recently appointed VP. of Publicis Media for Publicis Groupe Africa.

In many respects Celia’s comprehensive journey from a traditional media agency background, through digital innovation and high-level Pan-African media trading & investment management, mirrors perfectly the evolutionary path of the media industry itself. Celia shares some key learnings and talks about some of the critical shifts in the dynamics of the media industry over that 20-year journey.

A recently released Forrester Media Management report for Q3 2022 named Publicis Media Groupe a leader in global media management services across 3 of 4 waves – Media Management, Customer Data & Activation services and DX services.

In the past the media discipline could be broadly divided into media planning & media buying but media planning and buying now only constitute 10% of the total Forrester Media Management scorecard. Interestingly enough, Publicis Media Groupe is also listed as a “strong performer” in Content creation and Creative services, along with some of the world’s most recognizable advertising agency brands. Of course, this poses the question ‘where does a creative agency end and a media agency begin’?

Is that obsolete thinking? Or have we just gone full circle back to the future of advertising only to rediscover the merits of the one-stop shop?
The Power of One is the core vision that underpins the Publicis Media Groupe Africa offering across, 36 countries and 63 agencies. Join us on the Doc and Guru podcast this week as Celia Collins unpacks what this means for the future of young media professionals in South Africa and Africa.

Today on the Doc and Guru Podcast we chat again with veteran journalist and Editor of Daily Maverick 168 on the road increasingly less travelled by journalists and advertisers alike.

After more than 3 decades in journalism, media and innovation project management Heather’s understanding of the challenges facing news publishers offers a unique insight into the role of newspapers and online news in fixing a broken nation.

If newspaper journalism is a service not just to the people who can afford to pay for a title, but also to the public at large, how do publishers balance this role with the commercial imperative? Many marketers seem to have bought into the mantra that “newspapers are dead” but is it fundamentally nothing more than a content distribution metamorphoses?

In the aftermath of the global pandemic it might be argued that the resultant Infodemic has done more harm than the Covid virus itself. The global Edelman Trust Barometer reports that 59% of consumers now claim that distrust is their default position. And only 53% trust traditional media to do the right thing.
How do the Media in South Africa perform relative to global trust norms and what is the impact of trust in enhancing advertising response.

Listen in to Part 2 of the Doc and Guru podcast conversation with Daily Maverick 168 editor Heather Robertson as we reflect on the joy of writing.

This week on the Doc and Guru podcast we chat with radio icon and MTN Radio Awards Hall of Fame Inductee - Stan “the Man” Katz.
Always true to the radio man’s mantra that you should never say in one word what can be said in two – especially if you’re being paid by the word – we’ve decided to split this podcast into 2 parts.

Stan takes us on a rollicking radio ride from Swazi Music Radio and Capital Radio to WKRP Cincinnati and back. In an unprecedented feat of name-dropping we list of some of the great personalities that shaped Stan’s journey from Stan the Man to Stan the Manager. Sol Kerzner. John Berks. Wolfman Jack. And King Sobhuza II.

Best-known for his time on air on 702 and for launching the 702 Talk Radio format in South Africa, Stan talks about his journey over the years and the evolution of his passion for the “business of radio” and the need to understand “both sides of the money”. All of which has been condensed into his book Radio Advertising – A Sound Investment.

And what a journey it has been.

Voted by the readers of Darling magazine as the sexiest man in South Africa in 1983, Stan was nominated in 1995 as the IMM Marketing Man of the Year. Stan was inducted into the MTN Radio Awards Hall of Fame in 2012.
So if you’re in radio or you want to work in radio the first question you need to ask is “what business are we in?

And if you want the answer to that question, then listen in to Part 1 of the Doc and Guru Podcast and you could win a free copy of Stan’s highly successful book.

On this week’s The DOC & The GURU Podcast, we chat with the multi-talented Odette van der Haar. So in a very interesting episode that ranges from the start of her entrepreneurial journey selling fried fish bones as a little school girl, all the way to running the Association for Communications and Advertising (ACA), then 2 massive advertising agencies, being a media personality, presenter of Business Beat on the Morning Show on eTV, as well as a business and marketing consultant – it’s all here.

Don’t miss out to hear about her views on advertising agencies that have lost the ability to be agile and have too many unnecessary steps in the process that waste time and adds cost – instead of using smart and effective ways of working. She also discusses transformation in the sector, and the good intentions but poor execution and implementation of the Marketing, Advertising and Communication (MAC) Charter, where she was deeply involved.

Her strong opinions on transformation include; that there should be a process of real skills development with empowerment and enablement, learning and teaching every day, the genuine action of helping your neighbour, no fear of redundancy, and that transformation is not viewed as a punitive measure. In addition, she is equally concerned about large parts of society that have a blame mind-set, a hand-out culture and a disease of corruption.

So, if you want to hear about living with ‘no regrets – only life lessons’, don’t miss this episode of The DOC & The GURU Podcast – for free!

In another fantastic episode that celebrates finalists in the Marketer of the Year category for this year’s Marketing Achievement Awards, The DOC & The GURU chat with Tinyiko Mageza, the Executive Head of Marketing at the V & A Waterfront.

Listen is, as Tinyiko chats passionately and authentically about her love of her job and how her precinct (with its multiple stakeholders) is so much more than a Ferris wheel and boat cruises around the harbour – in fact it’s an extension of the City of Cape Town, and a jewel in SA’s tourism crown. However it’s not just for tourists, as she and her team have refreshed and repositioned the V & A Waterfront, and continue to work at making the area, with its numerous attractions, a welcoming place for all.

There are incredible people doing incredible things there, and no more so than the ‘From Africa To the World’ initiative that is purposeful marketing at its very best – as it showcases and celebrates some of the best African arts and crafts. This is an excellent example of marketing amplifying and dramatising the business purpose.

Tinyiko furthermore shares critical skills and advice for marketers of today and into the future; sometimes you (as she did) have to take that ‘leap of faith’, don’t let your business definition (in her case, it’s a property development company) limit your marketing dreams, look for the ‘spaces between the buildings’, care deeply and empathetically, show up in an authentic way and see things from the customer’s view as you create ‘moments that matter’.

This is another insightful The DOC & The GURU Podcast – as we wish Tinyiko, and the other finalists, all the best for the upcoming awards.

In our 2nd episode that celebrates finalists in the Marketer of the Year category for this year’s Marketing Achievement Awards, The DOC & The GURU chat with Firoze Bhorat, the Chief Marketing Officer at the Discovery Group.

In an extremely insightful episode, Firoze discusses some of what makes Discovery such a successful company; centralised marketing for all of the verticals so that there’s a comprehensive customer ecosystem, positive behavioural change leading to an unlocking of shared value, replicating parts of the SA-model globally, really demonstrating their purpose with the Discovery Vaccination Centres, and employing the best and brightest marketers who have a fundamental understanding of their respective business units.

He also speaks about robust thinking and ‘staying with the problem longer’, that often leads to better results with products and services that are streets ahead of others, whilst completely disrupting the category. Listen in to hear about the ‘peacock effect’ in media and also some of Discovery’s very interesting values and company culture.

Firoze furthermore shares critical skills and advice for marketers of today and into the future; understand the business so that you are able to positively contribute and don’t just stay in your ‘marketing lane’, seize your opportunities as they present themselves, step out of your comfort zone to stretch your thinking, and understand that career capital is often built exponentially.

This is another insightful The DOC & The GURU Podcast – as we wish Firoze, and the other finalists, all the best for the upcoming awards.

In a very interesting episode, she leads the marketing discussion with the concept of growth, seeing her role (and marketing as a whole) as the ‘growth-engine’ of the business. It’s refreshing to chat with a marketer who has really embraced the notion that marketing = business, as we delve into sales and tangible returns, consumer behaviour, content creation, reinvention and repositioning, as well as the exciting challenges of B2B marketing where she doesn’t always have the next shiny object.

Nelly furthermore shares critical skills for marketers of today and into the future; understand data and be insights-driven, understand and speak the language of business as you articulate the value that marketing adds, develop your soft skills and collaboration (internally and externally), take risks, be informed and take up your space with pride.

In our second episode that celebrates finalists in the Rising Stars category (top young SA marketers) for this year’s Marketing Achievement Awards, The DOC & The GURU chat with Taryn Jankes, a Social Media Specialist at Discovery Ltd.

In a very interesting half-hour, she shares about her ‘always-on’ journey at Discovery and how there’s ‘never a boring day’. So listen in to hear how the company values both young voices making an impact as well as the senior voices of leadership, as Taryn works alongside top leaders like Adrian Gore, Hylton Kallner and others on various social media platforms.
Managing an entire ecosystem with authenticity and trust are huge attributes in messaging, as Discovery engages with the top thought leaders and exerts in their respective fields to provide timeous and accurate information to their customers, across all of their business units.

This was evidenced and extremely impressive with their highly visible, national Covid-19 Drive to Vaccinate work over the past 2 years.
We also look at transparency and the right amount of communication, media reporting models, analytics and optimising content, the Edelman Trust Barometer, and fighting against some social media algorithms that radically favour negative content over positive. Taryn furthermore shares critical skills for marketers of today and into the future; have the courage to try and to test – use various platforms to see how your own data works on them – and make more data-driven decisions.

This is another insightful The DOC & The GURU Podcast – as we wish Taryn, and the other finalists, all the best for the upcoming awards.

This week on The DOC & The GURU Podcast, we begin a series on the Marketing Achievement Awards and recognise finalists in the Rising Stars category (top young SA marketers), with our first guest being Jared Patel - Head of Marketing at the Sea Harvest Group.

In chatting with us, Jared shares how he started his journey aboard a fishing vessel in order to gain an understanding and real appreciation of the business – before doing any of the marketing. This wider view of both the company and the consumer permeates our discussion, as he elaborates on a host of things; the reversal of a declining market share, winning product of the year, fully-integrated campaigns, partnership models, the clever media use and a whole lot more.

As marketers, it’s important to see things from the customer’s perspective, to have a mix of technical and ‘soft’ (but critically important) skills, and to get out of your ‘marketing box’ in order to know the whole business. So, if you want to hear about ‘Mealtime Heroes’ and ‘Friends in the Freezer’, then listen in as to why you should ask kids want they want (especially if they are your main target audience).

This is another insightful The DOC & The GURU Podcast - as we wish Jared, and the other finalists, all the best for the upcoming awards.

We chat partnership, collaboration, synergy and a respect for time on this week’s The DOC & The GURU Podcast, as we welcome Wendy Bergsteedt, Group Head of Marketing at Coronation Fund Managers, and Independent Creative Consultant at Number 10, Ahmed Tilly.

In another very insightful episode, we examine Coronation’s latest campaign – a nostalgic throw-back to lifestyle ads of the 80s. But we don’t only look at the work, that is great and doing really well; we examine the unique way in which Wendy brought together the best people to work in a truly collaborative manner alongside their lead agency, Ogilvy, to produce the campaign (with the starting secret - leave your ego at the door).

Here they break the mould, challenge the industry advertising parity and a category convention by saying that ‘good things come to those who don’t wait to invest’. Whilst everyone else has been preaching patience and time, this campaign and its message is exactly the opposite; in order to live your best life, you don’t have time and need to display a sense of urgency.

So, if you want to hear about being ‘Freshly Consistent’, along with other great marketing insights and lessons, don’t miss out to hear from two experts in their field on The DOC & The GURU Podcast.

We welcome back onto the Doc and Guru Podcast The Brandfather – Jeremy Sampson – Managing Director of Brand Finance SA.

It has been over 100 weeks since the start of the pandemic and it is encouraging to note the performance of SA’s top brands. During the first half of the pandemic SA’s top brands declined an overall -2% in value. After the second 52 weeks brand value has seen overall brand value increase by +8%.

It’s not surprising that this year’s theme is SA Brands Driving the Economy and the report has been expanded to include South Africa’s Top 100 brands.

The big hitters dominate again (in terms of brands and sectors). Finance and data still top the pops but it’s interesting to see the performance of Multichoice given the current state of the subscriber TV market.

In any truly dynamic report it’s rarely the ranking itself that provides the most intriguing insights but rather the shuffling in the ranks. Not surprisingly the retail sector has been first out of the post Covid starting blocks. 5 of the Top 20 Most Valuable Brands are retailers, and retailers account for 4 of South Africa’s Top 10 Strongest Brands.

Jeremy highlight several critical factors which are key to the driving Brand value and growth in the retail sector.

In this episode, we unpack the notion of a soft power – the brand’s ability to co-opt rather than coerce consumers. Against the backdrop of Putin’s War in Ukraine the Global Soft Power Index provides a fascinating insight into the positioning and performance of Brand SA.

This week on the Doc and Guru Podcast we chat with Managing Director of Edelman South Africa – Karena Crerar – about the recently released Edelman Trust Barometer Report 2022.

Founded by Daniel Edelman in 1952, Edelman is one of the largest communication groups in the world and for the past 22 years Edelman Trust Barometer reports have become a beacon for companies seeking to navigate the murky waters of building trust through communication. Insights contained in the Edelman Trust Barometer Report 2022 were extracted from a global online sample of 36,000 respondents in 28 countries. The 2022 Report sheds light on the global Trust Zeitgeist through 4 primary silos … Business/ NGOs/ Government/ Media.

In this podcast we explore some of the key findings from the 2022 report including • The significant decline in trust in democracies since last year • The emergence of “my company” as a trusted communication lens through which to view the world • The trust gap between the “haves” and the “have-nots” • The general erosion in trust for advertising and media - and social media in particular It’s a sobering thought that 59% of respondents say that their default position is to distrust until they see evidence to the contrary.

Interesting insights from analysing the Edelman Trust Barometer Reports from a trend perspective. • 2003 “Earned media becomes more credible than Advertising” - the emergence of the POE model. • 2005 “Trust shifts from ‘Authorities to Peers’ – the birth of influencer marketing. • 2010 “Performance & transparency deemed essential to Trust” – the commitment to walking the walk not just talking the talk. Many of these narratives have since become embedded in the lexicon of marketers and advertisers.

What does this mean for marketers and advertisers? What do we need to think about when we are crafting advertising messaging and making media planning decisions? Tune in and listen to The Doc and the Guru Podcast

On this week’s episode of The DOC & The GURU Podcast, we chat about the recent 6 Nations Rugby Tournament and celebrate the success achieved by SA kicking coach, Vlok Cilliers, in playing such an integral part in France’s triumph.

And this show is not just about rugby; it’s a show about the parallels in life and the lessons that are all around us – I promise you, it’s a great listen! As marketers and media people, don’t miss out – it’s of immense value.

Vlok talks about finding the balance between individual brilliance and a team environment, doing the hard yards (and all those inches) well away from the Final, understanding and trusting the process and not just being outcome-focussed, managing the wafer-thin margins (at that level of sport, business and life) that result in fewer errors and a higher win-ratio, the alignment and role of leadership like the captain, Antoine Dupont (World Rugby Player of the Year), and head coach, Fabien Galthie, having mental toughness and paying attention to all the necessary detail.

French rugby has always been blessed with stars and a flamboyant style of play but, it’s also fair to say that they have been notoriously unpredictable and inconsistent at times – but this team seems to have built on the best (and continues to do so) and will go in as one of the favourites at next year’s Rugby World Cup France 2023, on home soil.

We close the show by moving away from the glitz and glamour of this campaign, and chat about the important work that the VlokSkop Foundation is doing in South Africa to help less-privileged people. So, listen in to see how you can get involved and make a contribution?

This week on the Doc and Guru Podcast we chat with well-known media executive Mauro Black - Director: Content Sales & Distribution at MultiChoice Group.

MultiChoice Group entertainment platforms like DStv, GOtv, Showmax & DStv Now are a hub for more than 19 million viewers across 50 countries. But to many of us planning and buying within the South Africa market, this massive trade in BVOD entertainment content - the energy that fuels these and many other global viewing platforms - is all largely invisible.

At times the quantum of viewer engagement is unfathomable. Multichoice reality show Big Brother NAIJA set all-time records with over 1,2 billion votes cast by viewers.

And speaking of unfathomable in this episode of the Doc and Guru Podcast we address the latest rumours that Eskom will be sponsoring Max Verstappen & F1 in 2022. Forget DRS. This year F1 is going to be all about Eskom ERS.

In this episode our guest Mauro Black unpacks the 5 key pillars of performance that underpin the Multichoice Studios global offering.

At the core of this offering is local content production. Multichoice local content production is up +41% YoY with a target of 45% of GE content spend in 2022. In South Africa local content viewing is up from 35% of viewing time in 2021 to 44% in 2022 YTD. In Kenya this appetite for local content accounts for 49% of viewing behaviour. In Nigeria that figure is a whopping 74% of viewing. Is local culture the new African diamond in the rough?

And speaking of local content, in this episode we leak news about the rollout of the possible return of local movie sensation. Kaalgat Karel II - Karel Oppie Kampus.

Seems like when it comes to broadcaster video content, if you build it they will come.

This week on the Doc and Guru Podcast we chat with Kelvin Watt – Director Nielsen Sports SA about the state of sports marketing globally.

We’ve always been told that nobody is bigger than the game but does that still hold true for sports marketing?

As stadiums around the world start to fill up, we have all become excited about the prospect of watching live sport again. But when it comes to watching live sport on Television it seems that one screen isn’t enough.

The value of OTT media rights has quadrupled over the past 5 years as fans around the world have found new ways to build their own virtual sporting communities. Chatting during live viewing events. Sharing ancillary content. Even betting and co-watching on connected devices.

The Nielsen Global Sports Marketing Report 2022 outlines what all this means for sponsors, advertisers and media-owners.

One of the most fascinating insights in the report pertains to the growth of blockchain technology and crypto in the sport marketing sector. In this podcast Kelvin Watt helps to outline how sponsors benefit from NFT and crypto activations and NFT.

After all, what kind of marketing word is fungible anyway?

As many brands shift their event and team sponsorship strategies away from the bigger is better narrative to focus more on the athletes as primary influencers, it’s beginning to seem like the fans and the players might just be bigger than the game after all.

This week on The Doc and The Guru Podcast we chat with one of South Africa’s most evenly balanced #media executives. Kgaugelo Maphai. Managing Director of Magnia Investments and Chairman of the Matrix Group.

A man who has worked all sides of the media fence over the past 21 years, Kgaugelo shares some of his insights on building a successful 100% locally owned business in the local media sector.

The recent rebranding of the Matrix Group media brand as Kintaro signals the need to ensure that industry players sustain our local economy by ensuring that revenue and dividends remain in the country; instead of flowing out to shareholders sitting in the advertising fortresses of Europe and North America.

Compassion isn’t even his middle name. It’s his actual name. So the focus on developing people at the core of his business success comes as no surprise and the Kintaro brand is centred on 3 pillars of future-focused media solutions.

• INTEGRATION. INTELLIGENCE. INNOVATION

In this episode we unpack the significance of these pillars and Kintaro’s vision not only for regional and cultural nuance in local advertising but also for Pan-African relevance and expansion.

Cognitive agility, collaborative processes and cutting edge foresights are the key to winning in the current media landscape. But is foresight enough? Find out in this episode of The Doc and The Guru as we talk about everything from Kaizer Chiefs to amapiano and 1950’s calypso music.

This week in The Doc and The Guru Podcast we chat with Zibusiso Mkhwanazi (Executive Chairperson of M&N Brands) and Chris Botha (Group Managing Director of Park Advertising) about the launch of AMA. A 100% black owned disrupter media agency.

Go on! AMA. #AskMeAnything. What’s in a name you say? AMA. You got it Avatar Media Agency.

So what prompted this joint venture between South Africa’s original and oldest media agency and the dynamic young creative agency group Avatar? What are the mutually beneficial points of intersection between the media agency that has built its offering around finding a better way to connect clients' brands with their consumers, and a creative agency that believes in creating ideas that move people?

When it comes structuring a deal like this are you a let’s get together for coffee or a let’s get together for a glass of wine kind of person? And just what is a disrupter agency?

We also examine some of the big challenges and opportunities facing media agencies as we emerge from Covid pandemic and reflect on the evolution of extreme generalists and extreme specialists in media.

Park Advertising’s Sean Clarke is without doubt one of Mzansi’s most understated media icons but in this podcast we also pose the question is the quiet man of media also the media industry’s most under-rated golfer? And speaking of icons, in this episode we also chat about the Barry Manilow factor in global diplomacy. Does Barry Manilow have hair on his teeth? Or is he just long in the tooth? All this and more in this week’s The Doc and The Guru Podcast.

When it comes to dealing with SABC most of us are either in the glass half-full or a glass half-empty category. Or should that be half-switched off and half-switched on?

In this week’s episode of The Doc and The Guru podcast we chat with SABC Group Executive: Sales – Reggie Nxumalo about what is probably the most important issue facing broadcasters in South Africa over the coming years. The migration from analogue to digital terrestrial broadcasting (DTB). Or as it is more generally referred to DTT (Digital Terrestrial Television).

Fifteen years in the melting pot the SABC has finally begun the process of switching to digital broadcasting by throwing off the analogue switch in the Free State, Northern Cape and NW Province. What does this mean for the 5 million households impacted by the switchover? And how is the SABC dealing with the fallout?

As we switch to DTB is there still a role for linear radio in the OD (On Demand) media landscape? Can advertisers still “tap into the local community” with real time radio? The Edelman Trust Barometer 2022 reports that “distrust is now society’s default emotion.” Is home language content still the key to building trust with consumers and tapping into these communities?

In this show we revisit the importance of home language in transforming the radio station into a trusted brand, not just a destination on the dial, and in building brand trust. We also examine new ways of partnering with SABC, ranging from their RAP studios which offer a range of services from creative radio writing and recording radio ads, to developing 360O promotional packages, and also the crossover media offerings that build on the powerful market synergies inherent in SABC TV and radio assets.

The analogue switch might be off but the lights are still on at Auckland Park. And the message from Reggie Nxumalo is that the SABC is open for business.

On this week’s episode of The DOC & GURU Podcast, we chat Influencer Marketing with a very special expert guest, Kevin Kirby, from Nfinity Media, our long-time sponsor.

As always, we promise an action-packed episode, looking at the hype around influencers and are they really any different to the brand ambassadors/endorsers (of yesteryear) or is it the same thing? Have marketers just got bored again and created some new terms?

How do the different categories of influencers (macro, micro, nano etc.) appeal to different markets and work better with different brands? We also look at what a brand owner needs to do in order to add influencer marketing to their mix and examine some great case studies of influencer-success.

It also seems like influencers have far more leeway on what they can say about a brand, as opposed to an ad-agency that is governed by amongst other bodies, the ARB; but Kevin reassures us that it’s not a total free-for-all. And as much as we tried to avoid it, we also chat the Kardashians and who Kevin thinks is better at selling lipstick!

But then the BIG REVEAL; little did we know that Gordon (the GURU) is a massive influencer himself – albeit, a very grumpy one this week as his two brands of fish paste, Redro (or as I still call it, Wedwo) and Peck’s Anchovette have been discontinued.

So again, don’t miss out and listen for free to another great guest on The DOC & The GURU Podcast!

In this week’s Doc and Guru Podcast we chat with Trish Guildford the General Manager of the OMC (Out of Home Measurement Council) in her State of the Out Of Home Nation Address (SOOHNA). SOOHNA. It’s like SONA but with an “H”.

In this episode we review the increasing importance of an effective and reliable OOH audience currency measurement which will ensure that the OOH medium gets its fair share at the advertising a table. Trish unpacks the evolution of OOH research from its early days in AMPS and highlights the key elements of the Roadside Outdoor Audience Database (ROAD).

We also unpack the OMC initiative which is reconfiguring ROAD as a cloud based data offering with open source software that will make ROAD data more freely accessible to all OOH planners and stakeholders.

Beyond the numbers is OOH still an agile and creative media platform? Listen in and if you like what you hear The Guru will buy you a Pepsi. In this final wrap-up episode of The Doc and The Guru Podcast we reflect back on 2021 and some of the key events that have shaped the marketing and advertising narrative in our basket of 55 podcasts this year. So with apologies to Charles Dickens “It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the pandemic of foolishness, it was the epoch of masked belief, it was the epoch of anti-vax incredulity, it was the season of light, it was the season of lockdown darkness, it was the winter of hope, it was the summer of despair.” In many respects is has been a year packed with highlights. The release of the new BRC_RAMS data was a crucial milestone. The release of the MRF_MAPS database provided much food for thought. The Marketing Achievement Awards afforded us access to some of the South Africa’s top marketing minds. The young voices in the media and marketing industry generated some of our most inspirational and popular podcast moments. Balancing the youthful passion with some of the traditional marketing and media craft skills will be a key imperative for The Doc and The Guru Podcast in 2022. For many people, there have been few highlights in 2021 and to the many people in the marketing and advertising industry who have suffered loss this past year, we extend our deepest condolences. Sometimes when we can’t make sense of something in hindsight it’s best to reflect on what it might mean for the future. 2021 has been one of those occasions and, for those of us who are fortunate enough to find ourselves amongst the ranks of the remnant, we should perhaps view the 2021 through the lens of Des and Dawn Lindberg. - Every day is an opening night! Every new year is another opportunity to up your game. Thank you for the time you’ve given us in 2021. Thank you for the many suggestions we received. Enjoy the break and we look forward to chatting with you in January. Lots to do in ’22!

The shift in methodology from the long-established RAMS diary format to DAR (Day After Recall) signals the BRC intention to adopt a holistic measure of consumer listening behaviour. This week on The Doc and The Guru podcast we chat with SABC Head of Insights Angie Hammond about the implications of the new BRC RAMS release for media planners and buyers.

Innovation always comes with a degree of anxiety and it’s a peculiarity of media strategists that, while we actively promote change in media research, we constantly seek reassurance by referencing the old and familiar. The release of the latest BRC RAMS is no exception.

Can we compare BRC RAMS21 listenership with past listenership figures? Should we be reviewing the radio ratecard?

In this episode of The Doc and The Guru podcast we review some the technical issues around the new RAMS methodology and sampling framework. Accessing upmarket gated communities has increasingly been a challenge for researchers, so how does BRC RAMS21 deal with this? How does POPI legislation impact the new CATI methodology used to establish station listenership? If you’re a radio station carrying advertising for soft drinks and teenage skincare products, you might want to take a listen.

When it comes to the drone perspective for overall listening behaviour and station listenership specifically, it seem the more things change the more they stay the same. The big stay big and the small stay small. But did Khulumamedia get it wrong this time?

Take a look for yourself on Khulumamedia’s Blog – The Shatner Factor. Subscribe #free to The Doc and The Guru podcast and find out about the rollout of the BRC listening panel data in 2022 because BRC RAMS is just the first step in the journey towards a holistic measure of listening behaviour. It isn’t the final destination.

When the final AMPS database was released in 2016 for some people it was the end of the world. For others it represented the start of a brave new world. In this episode, we chat with Johann Koster CEO of the Market Research Foundation and MAPS Project Manager Marie Rossouw about the journey from AMPS to the release of the first full set of MAPS data in 2021. Designed as a consumer behaviour research tool, MAPS gives a great overall view of consumer lifestyles, behaviour and decision-making. But how do we use the database from a media strategy perspective? In this episode we unpack some of the interesting behavioural insights which impact media consumption in the digital landscape and the MAPS teams constructs a compelling case for concluding that “how many?” is a media currency issue but “how” is a planning issue. We also talk about MAPS claim to be a “single source” database and pose two questions. What constitutes a single-source database and in a platform agnostic digital landscape is it realistic to expect any one database to be a fully inclusive and holistic source of marketing insights? What’s the future for collaboration in market research in South Africa? How do we find the collaborative common ground in terms of alignment with the global WFA North Star initiative for XMM (Cross Media Measurement). Is data fusion a viable option in order for marketers to navigate across the myriad research database options that have manifested themselves in the post AMPS landscape? What is the contribution of time and space in ensuring reliable and valid data fusion? Could the LSM and SEM models tools be recalibrated and reconstituted so that the industry can once again have one uniform lens for broad-based macro segmentation and audience measurement? Join us this week on The Doc and The Guru Podcast as we piece the MAPS puzzle together with these insights from the MRF (Marketing Research Foundation) and find out whether the Doc is already trimming the Christmas tree.

In this episode of The Doc and The Guru podcast we with chat with Monique Claassen – Head of Insights at Kantar about the latest Media Reactions 2021 report and some of the recipes for advertising success featured in Media Master Chef 2021.

The Media Reactions report explores some of the remarkable disconnects between marketers and consumers when it comes to planning a media campaign. And some of the halo effects can we expect from different media environments.

When it comes to media can you put a price on trust? And when it comes to advertising can you put a value on Diversity and Inclusion. The Warc guide to Conscious Media Planning 2021 identifies Diversity & Inclusion as a crucial campaign dynamic and urges marketers to embrace social issues. To think in terms of ‘inclusion check lists” not just “exclusion check lists” in campaign planning.

But what happens when the check box doesn’t work?

We discuss the recent John Lewis campaign and what constitutes an authentic human narrative in any ad campaign. You can tick the box but do you need to get the audience’s approval first?

This conundrum is highlighted by 3 deliciously prepared dilemmas • The Digital Dilemma. Are consumers in South Africa generally much less positive about ads in online channels than offline channels? • The Global Dilemma. How do you balance the benefits of scale of the global media platforms with the promise of greater relevance from local media gems? • The Innovators Dilemma – How do you go about finding the balance between digital and legacy media?

Intrusive media messaging may deliver guaranteed big numbers but at the end of the day you might just be measuring your reach against people who simply resent your messaging.

Join us on the Doc and Guru podcast as we journey Back to The Future to rediscover that some things haven’t changed. It’s still not just about the numbers.

Ranked by Forbes as the 4th most influential CMO in the world I guess we should all sit up and take notice when Mastercard CMO & CCO officer Raja Rajamanna says Marketing is in a deep existential crisis right now. The dissolution of the marketer’s role is well under way.

Now if you had to Google CCO for context then maybe that’s where the challenge starts. Chief Communications Officer. So many chief marketer roles are being eliminated and new titles are being created. Chief growth officer, chief revenue officer or chief customer officer. If you take away growth, revenue and customers, what is left in marketing?

Has marketing been eroded to the point where Promotion is the only surviving pillar of the Four P’s?

This week on The Doc and The Guru podcast we chat with PHD Media Group MD Wayne Bishop about a really insightful book recently published by PHD – Shift. A Marketing Rethink.

The recognition that that marketers have lost their place in the C-Suite is spelled out in the WFA Project Spring initiative. But does it all boil down to procurement and the inability to quantify outcomes?

In this week’s episode of The Doc and The Guru podcast we talk about The Wave of Complexity that has dramatically curtailed the marketers contribution to measurable outcomes and whether this has precipitated a mid-life crisis in traditional marketing. How do we build a People-Shaped Future? How can we Anticipate Tomorrow and what steps can we take right now to prevent the ongoing erosion?

This week’s guest on The Doc and The Guru podcast is Brandon de Kock – Director of Storytelling at Why Five Insights. A self-styled writer, photographer and professional hedonist who’s had too much to eat and drink on all 7 continents & played golf on 6 of them, Brandon talks about the stories behind the numbers in the latest release of the BrandMapp 2021 database.

Now in its 8th iteration BrandMapp has an online sample base in excess of 30,000 respondents and offers a unique lens on the top end of the South African market. Effectively the top SEM_10 decile. The ubiquitous online access which defines these high-end digicons (digital consumers) poses a number of questions about the continued effectiveness of traditional CAPI and CATI research in these communities.

Brandon’s insight that traditional emphasis on statistical reliability often restricts agility in market research poses the question … Where does the line lie between data reliability and the need to make agile marketing decisions in the moment?

As media strategists how do we balance the scales between agile insights and reliable audience quantification? Quantifying media audiences and attributable outcomes is not an easy task but increasingly that’s what has to happen. Ultimately we have to put a number to it because we have to put a price to it.

Join us on The Doc and The Guru podcast this week and find out what it takes to stop being a research Librarian and start being a data Explorer? And as a special listener bonus this week we’ll even tell you how many testicles the average South African has.

In 1980 Jamie Uys said The god’s must be crazy but this week in The Doc and The Guru podcast we posed the same question to renowned local film director Meg Rickards and screenplay writer and producer Paul Egan about the release of their latest movie Kaalgat Karel onto the local cinema circuit.

You just made a movie despite everything that’s happened around Covid ? Meg and Paul have produced, written and directed a number of ground breaking local documentaries including the much talked-about documentary 1994: The bloody miracle. A countdown to South Africa's first democratic elections the widely screened documentary won the Audience Award at the Durban International Film Festival, as well as the Writers' Guild award for Best Documentary Script.

Meg's directorial debut fiction feature Tess was released theatrically in South Africa in 2017 and won a number of awards, including the Best South African Film, Best Editing and Best Actress awards at the Durban International Film Festival. As well as Best Cinematography at the Silwerskermfees.

In this latest touching and amusing movie release Kaalgat Karel is portrayed as - A hapless streaker, seeking to win the heart of a strait-laced single mom, who must find a way to bear his soul rather than his buttocks. Which means he is instantly recognizable as any one of a number of characters from the Mad Men era of advertising in South Africa. Is the Guru one of them? Did a nude scrum really spillover into West Street in Durban? In a media landscape increasingly dominated by digital streaming and VOD, is there a future for locally produced movies and even cinema as a medium? What role can advertisers play to help stimulate local creative movie content? Do you have to be a renegade to engage in renegade marketing?

Find out in this episode of the DocAndGuruPodcast as we chat about what it takes to write, produce and direct a movie in South Africa. Better still! Go see the movie Kaalgat Karel and decide for yourself.

This week on The Doc and The Guru podcast we chat with Ask Afrika FMCG Client Lead Monique Pienaar about the role and contribution of the TGI database in the post AMPS landscape. Initially released in 2003 TGI was arguably Mzansi’s first functional alternative to the old AMPS database; but does longevity in and of itself offer any functional value to marketers?

Is there any point in even trying to trend data in a quantum shift media landscape?

Can we really look back to the future?

TGI mirrors a number of global studies in reporting the marked decline in brand loyalty. In this episode we discuss consumer relationships with brands and whether increased price elasticity automatically implies a decline in brand loyalty.

We also unpack the balance between the need for global alignment and local nuance in market research. Especially against the backdrop of the WFA report on Cross-Media Measurement where convergence on globally uniform definitions of media consumption is the ultimate objective.

Is it really possible to Think Global – Act Local?

This week on The Doc and The Guru podcast we chat with the former Net#work BBDO CEO Boniswa Pezisa about her appointment as executive director of independent media agency Mediology.

Launched in 2006 by CEO Ana Carrapichano the data-driven media and digital marketing agency is undergoing a growth and investment phase and Pezisa puts marketing and creativity at the centre of the agency’s integrated media solutions.

Creative minds don’t sleep says Pezisa and a focus on mental wellness is a key component of her plans to drive further change and transformation in the agency. And in the greater industry at large.

The recently published Warc report Future of Strategy 2021 indicates that the influence commanded by agency-side strategy teams continues to grow over time, both within their agencies and among clients. More than 60% have felt their influence increase during the pandemic, which has seen strategists relied upon for direction and problem solving in unprecedented scenarios.

Is upstream strategy an opportunity for collaboration between media and creative agencies or an invitation to arm wrestle for additional fees and advertiser budgets?

It’s often been said that the emergence of independent media agencies was a wonderful development for advertising folks who harboured a secret desire to work in the bank. So becoming a freelancer in the 90s had a certain swashbuckling appeal for media strategists. Especially for those strategists who preferred a creative interface, with an eclectic mix of advertisers, to the endless implementation of global media formulas and repetitive global reporting.

But for many freelancers life on the outside came with a price. Isolation and lack of access to mainstream data and research was often a barrier to working on blue chip brands and clients. For over a decade now The Abstract Club has acted as an active forum for media freelancers to get together to exchange information, share insights and explore new business opportunities.

But as with so many industries the impact of Covid19 has severely curtailed these collaborative activities. Internationally Warc reports in their annual Future of Strategy 2020 Report that 21% of surveyed respondents did not make use of freelancers, and 48% reduced the use of freelancers during the pandemic. So for the average freelancer the past few years has increasingly been all tight-buckle and very little swash.

This week on The Doc and The Guru Podcast we chat with two pioneers of The Abstract Club Joanne Scholtz and Karen Dyke who have re-launched #AbstractClub on a new website which will give members fluid access to each other. And more importantly create a one-stop-shop for advertisers, marketers and media-owners to brief in projects online, and to source some of Mzansi’s top media talent. What constitutes a media expert? If you’re a regular listener to The Doc and Guru Podcast then you will know that this show has always been a strong advocate for community media. No democracy can flourish unless it is grounded in a free and independent media – and a truly free and independent media must in turn be grounded in the community it serves.

In the past few weeks the vital role played by community media in facilitating open and balanced discourse has been brought into stark relief. It is no coincidence that over 100 radio masts were destroyed. As well as a number of community radio stations. But that is history.

This week on The Doc and The Guru Podcast we chat with Trinity Mohlamme and Blake Andrew about an exciting new initiative from the Abundant Media Group to start rebuilding the community radio sector. With the generous support of LM Radio, advertisers like TOMS Music Shop, and major media industry players like the Nahana Communications Group and Park Advertising the #Vuselela initiative has begun the task of repairing the damage to the community radio sector.

Hons degree from the University of Stellenbosch and qualifications from the Wits Radio Academy (cum laude) the AAA School of Advertising. Lundi has worked her way up pretty much every rung on the radio broadcast ladder and is setting a great example to all young South Africans, on putting back what you take out, by lecturing to drama students at the University of Pretoria.

Known as Douyin in its native China, Tik Tok is redefining the concept of short-form video for brands around the world through an AI-powered, feed-style interface which allows users to create and share vertical video clips lasting up to 15-seconds, and consume & comment on UGC.

This week on The Doc and Guru The Podcast we chat with Greg Baillie @Webfluential Head of Growth (HOG) about how Tik Tok is making waves in the local market.

Since being launched by ByteDance in 2016 Tik Tok has been downloaded more than one billion times globally and Tik Tok’s mounting influence in youth culture is challenging every traditional digital media platform offering.

Of course the moment we start juxtaposing Tik Tok against traditional digital media platforms that in itself is a powerful media statement. Traditional digital media. How’s that for premature digital ageing! But engaging with Tik Tok is a little bit like watching Nick Kyrgios at Wimbledon. Deep down inside you know he’s simply outrageous. And so infuriating. But so entertaining and compelling that you just can’t stop watching him.

So is Tik Tok just a big audience generator or do its ad-formats like brand takeover and in-feed native video allow for a deeper, more integrated creative interface?

Listen in and subscribe free to The Doc and The Guru Podcast as Greg Baillie talks about the importance of early creative engagement and matching brand to content. About an inside the creative content-onion magnetism rather than the traditional through the creative content-onion push for attention.

When it comes to #media Greg Baillie might be the HOG but is Tik Tok the GOAT?

This week on The Doc and Guru podcast we chat with Brand Finance Africa CEO Jeremy Sampson about the recent release of the Brand Finance Africa report on South Africa’s Top 50 Most Valuable Brands.

Every year, Brand Finance puts 5,000 of the biggest brands around the world to the test, evaluating their strength, quantifying their value, and ranking those brands across all sectors and countries globally. South Africa’s top 50 most valuable and strongest brands are included in the Brand Finance South Africa 50 2021 Report.

The Brand Finance Top50 Report showcases the resolve & resilience of local brands during the pandemic with Total Brand Value standing at over R460 Billion.

The report has some familiar insights.

The Top 3 sectors banking (23%), telecoms (18%) and retail (13%) still dominate, accounting for over 50% (R247 Billon) of total brand value. But it’s the performance of new entries such as Dischem, Media24 and Sibanye Stillwater that catch the eye. And when it comes to the retail clothing sector find out who is the biggest winner and who is the biggest loser (or is that victim?) during the Covid18 pandemic.

But it’s not all about financial value.

In this podcast Jeremy “The Brandfather” Sampson talks with The Doc and The Guru about the importance of reputation management to overall brand health. MTN may be Mzansi’s most valuable brand for the 10th consecutive year but find out why brands like Capitec and Carling Black Label feature amongst the nation’s Top 5 Strongest Brands, as we unpack the contribution of ethical practice and customer-centric innovation on overall brand health.

We may debate whether it was Peter Drucker who first made the statement “if you can’t measure it you can’t manage it” but there’s no debating the fact that, when it comes to marketing and advertising, measurement of business and brand reputation is integral to campaign management.

This week on The Doc and The Guru Podcast we chat with Media and Data Analyst Nqobile Alick Mahlangu from media monitoring agency Ornico about tracking business reputation in the media, and the importance of building trust in the marketplace.

What are the critical tools needed to measure reputation? Is it necessary to have an external party conduct primary research and data analyses, or does the collective weight of secondary data paint enough of a picture? And who does the listening? Real people or AI Bots?

In her recently published book Mission Economy: A Moonshot Guide to Changing Capitalism leading global economist Mariana Mazzucato advocates a shift from shareholder to stakeholder engagement. She asserts that for companies to maintain their reputations and build trust they need to do things 4 things • See things differently. • Do things differently. • Collaborate differently. • Redistribute profits differently.

Is this really news or do we just have to Mind the Gap?

Just manage the Reputation Reality Gap between assessed perception and the UX reality. The Trust Gap between the Informed Public and the Mass Population?

It might come as no surprise to discover that in the 2021 Edelman Trust Barometer South Africa has the worst Trust Gap in the world.

Tune and listen free to The Doc and The Guru podcast this week and find out which country has a Trust Gap score that’s even worse than South Africa.

There is no terrain on the traditional media landscape that has been more scrutinized than TV expenditure. Every cent. Every spot. Every rating point has to be accounted for. TV post campaign analysis has virtually created the twilight zone that is media auditing.

So what happens when you buy a spot that appears to have no audience? In this episode of The Doc and The Guru Podcast we chat with Kelvin Storie – Principal: Media Strategy & Insights DSTV Media Sales about the crucial issue of Zero Ratings (ZR).

DSTV Media Sales recently hosted a live industry webinar to outline the scale of the issue and to address some of the contributing factors and planned solutions. In this episode Kelvin Storie unpacks some of the key issues arising from that webinar.

What is a Zero Rating? Does a ZR automatically imply a lower audience? Is it a technical issue or does it simply reflect the reality of streaming and video consumption on other platforms? Is this a global phenomenon and how do we compare against global norms? Are we outliers or just on a different point of the path being travelled by other countries?

Are you all sitty comftybold two square on your botty? Then I'll begin!

Now of course all you woke music aficionados will recognise this as the intro line to the story of Happiness Stan from the iconic 1968 album Ogden’s Nut Gone Flake. More than that though, it’s also the proper way to start telling a story.

And why not! Because this week on The Doc and The Guru podcast we are joined by two masters (or is that mistresses?) of the oral traditional. Story tellers Lynn Joffe and Thandi Ngwenya from the agency Creatrix. Both strong believers that brands need to go beyond hard sell commercial messaging and become part of the broader conversation, they also buy into the power of the oral tradition to generate positive change.

If you want to learn about a culture, listen to the stories. If you want to change a culture change the stories. Michael Margolis – CEO Storied But it’s not just about using indigenous language on ALS radio though. It’s also about cultural nuance and expression. Strong believers in the power of broadening the narrative The Creatrix team has explored all facets of the oral traditional as a creative device. Music. Industrial theatre. Even children’s books.

For some #marketers #advertisers and #media strategists in Mzansi the demise of AMPS in 2015 is viewed as the end of the world. For others it signals the start of a Brave New World. Either way the reality is that the post-AMPS media and #research landscape consists of a range of databases, each one representing a distinctively shaped piece in the holistic #marketing and media jigsaw puzzle.

Today on The Doc and The Guru Podcast we chat with Marketing Research Foundation CEO Johan Koster about the launch of the Marketing All Product Survey (MAPS). Five years in the melting pot MAPS – often erroneously referred to as the replacement for AMPS - was released to subscribers last week.

Now all interested parties in the industry are invited to attend the launch of MAPS on 25th March. Just click on this link and you’ll make the synch.

MRF MAPS LAUNCH 25 MARCH 10H00

The new MRF MAPS will provide insights on products and brands, intermedia comparisons and a host of other consumer behaviour measures. The MAPS questionnaire has been modernised and reengineered to marketers’ current needs, making it a big step-up and in many instances even a step-away from AMPS.

For an insight into the fieldwork conducted between July and December listen in The Doc and The Guru in conversation with Plus94 CEO Sifiso Falala earlier this year.

A subscription-funded research survey and database MAPS is managed by the MRF and is funded and controlled by marketers under the auspices of The Marketing Association SA. On this episode of The Doc and The Guru podcast Broadcast Research Council CEO Gary Whitaker explains how the new Radio Audience Measurement Survey (RAMS) will ensure audio and radio listening measurement will be made Future Ready in 2021.

For the past few years the quarterly release of RAMS listenership figures has been about as interesting and immovable as Margaret Thatcher’s hairdo. But all that is set to change when the Broadcast Research Council (BRC) releases the new RAMS audience data later this year.

Join us on the Doc and Guru Podcast as we chat with BRC CEO Gary Whitaker about the recent appointment of Ipsos to roll out the new RAMS research.

In the past RAMS was solely based on an initial face-to-face interview (CAPI method) and a manual 7-day listening diary. But the new RAMS data collection process is set to do the unthinkable.

DITCH THE DIARY

The new methodology will be based on a Computer-Aided Telephonic Interview (CATI method) which will be conducted monthly (n=36 000 on a rolling 12-month basis) and a parallel Ipsos MediaCell Passive Listening Panel which will track real time linear broadcast and digital audio consumption of 4,000 panellists each weekly.

This episode comes with a #SpoilerAlert. If you were hoping to trend your listenership figures from BRC_RAMS 2020 think again. Spoiler Alert - When it comes to radio audience measurement 2021 is Year_1. You just have to push the reset button.

Zero tolerance for any form of ad-fraud is a cornerstone of the WFA Global Media Charter. There must be compensation for any and all forms of media non-delivery.

Against that backdrop the need for third party verification would seem to be self-evident. And yet auditing and campaign tracking is by no means a ubiquitous practice.

Is ad fraud and media non-delivery even an issue in South Africa? This week on The Doc and The Guru chat with Andrew McFarlane and Quentin Stewart from AFSTEREO. Established in 2004 AFSTEREO is a leading South African supplier of real-time radio, TV advertising and music tracking data to all facets of the #media, #marketing, #research and music industries.

Listen and download #free this week’s The Doc and The Guru podcast as we explore the roots of tracking technology and more recent #digital innovations in strategic content and context evaluation.

In the 60s we believed Marshall McLuhan when he said The Medium is the Message. In today’s platform-saturated media landscape we now realise that The Message is the Message. Proving that you’ve delivered an ad is non-negotiable. Proving that you delivered it to the right destination is the real communication challenge.

Acclaimed South African author Angela Makholwa describes the latest novel (Two Months) from Gail Schimmel as a “psychological thriller questioning every angle of reality”. Which is exactly why we invited Gail Schimmel CEO – of the Advertising Regulatory Board – to talk to The Doc and The Guru about Black Friday and self-regulation in advertising.

Is Black Friday just another bit of opportunistic retail smoke and mirrors trick, which distorts pricing reality, or its it the single biggest opportunity we have to kickstart the ailing South African market in 2020?

Today, 50-60% of the world’s countries run Black Friday sales events and the levels of excitement and participation vary from one country to another. @Nielsen analyses The Price of Promoting confirms South Africa is the second-most price sensitive country in the world and @GeoPoll reports that the number of consumers claiming to shop Black Friday increased from 60% in 2017 to 76% in 2019.

Are South African consumers at risk?

Which? Report_2018 highlights endemic and widespread malpractice in “anchor pricing” in Black Friday and Cyber Monday offerrings. What should we be doing to protect our interests if we feel Black Friday advertising is misleading? Will the ARB listen if I am the lone voice in the wilderness? Listen in as Gail Schimmel explains the elegant logic of one. So here it is folks. This weeks The Doc and The Guru exclusive Black Friday offer.

From its early days as a music station 40 years ago, 702 became the defining voice of Gauteng. It’s pantheon of voices include Paddy O’Byrne, John Robbie, Berksie, the late great Cocky “Two-Bull” Tlhotlhalemaje and Stan “I’m not late but I’m still great” Katz.

Stan the Man once said that “only 5% of our 702 listeners call in. The other 95% have got lives”. But ultimately it has been the very voices of those countless thousands who have called-in over the past four decades, that have defined the station.

In recent years some of those voices stopped resonating with listeners and audiences began to decline. After extensive research Primedia has responded to 702 listeners and, in the words of Bing Crosby they’re gonna … Accentuate the positive Eliminate the negative Latch on to the affirmative and stop messing with mister in-between.

With us on the Doc and Guru podcast this week is 702 Station Manager Thabisile Mbete.

In 2016 Thabisile said she wanted to make an impact by championing editorial independence & integrity on Primedia radio channels. In 2020 she gets to deliver on that vision, as 702 commits to #WalkTheTalk with its listeners.

Listen in to The Doc and The Guru as Thabisile talks about the rebranding of 702 as a positive platform for inspirational change and the relevance of Talk Radio in a social media landscape where anybody and everybody gets to air their opinion whenever they want. Even bad golfers with a ginger combover.

This week in The Doc and The Guru podcast we tell the uplifting story of a young kid from GP_1431 who is so inspired by watching Mbongeni Ngema’s 1992 movie Sarafina at the local Paragon Theatre in Katlehong that he decides then and there to become a movie director. 25 years later his first movie Thina Sobabili wins the Danny Glover Award at the Pan African Film Festival and is nominated for an Oscar and an Emmy as Best Foreign Language Film in 2015.

In 2016 with his 13-part TV series You Think You Can Spin, featuring the legendary BMW Gusheshe, transforms spinning into South Africa’s Number_1 motor sport. Car spinning has now been officially recognised by the country’s regulatory body Motorsport South Africa (MSA) and endorsed by the World of Motorsport South Africa (WOMZA) and the South African Sports Confederation and Olympic Committee (SASCOC).

His latest 2019 production, the feature-length documentary film An Ordinary People, gives an in-depth account of the sport of spinning and the unique subculture it has created in South Africa. And all of this entirely self-funded. How’s that sound for a movie script? Too far-fetched? It would be. Except it’s not a movie script. It’s the very real story of how two young South African entrepreneurs Ernest Nkosi and Enos Manthata are carving out their own creative space and their own legacy in the world of Advertising, Movie and TV production.

When a self-confessed “fully reformed” London banker from Port Elizabeth decides to launch a print edition of a weekly newspaper during Covid19, you’d be forgiven for saying it’s a “madder than a bag of snakes” concept. Madder than a bag of snakes indeed!

Not our words but the words of Styli Charalambous, Publisher and CEO of Daily Maverick who joins us on this week’s #TheDocAndTheGuru podcast. Partnering on distribution with Pick n Pay through a brilliant #SmartShopperCard loyalty reward scheme, South Africa’s newest weekly print newspaper DailyMaverick_168 launches this week. And for anyone out there who still believes that “print is dead” the depth of data driven research and innovation, which informs this launch, may well serve to challenge Peter Drucker’s observation that culture eats strategy for breakfast.

Why DailyMaverick_168? Find out when #TheDocAndTheGuru podcast talks about digital natives, newspaper immigrants and the Democratic Debate. Or is that Democrapic Debate? DailyMaverick_168.
