On this episode of the podcast, Steve flies solo, breaking down a couple of very important stories not currently being widely discussed.
First, the Directory for Catechesis has been revised for the first time since the papacy of John Paul II, and those behind the changes are seeking to shift the emphasis from teaching doctrine to evangelization – to include care for migrants, ecology, and a new view of the death penalty as “inhuman.”
Second, we examine an interview with Anne-Marie Pelletier, a member of the pope’s latest commission to study women deacons. She offers some extremely telling insights into the possible agenda at work behind the commission, which may not so much be an attempt to take over the sacrament of holy orders, but to try to make it nearly irrelevant, giving women new roles not currently prohibited by existing Church discipline or teaching, seeking an ape of sacramental grace without sacraments. An empty, human church.
On the whole, it’s the picture of the real Church being set aside and remade in a new image, and it appears far more sinister in that respect than even many concerned Catholics expected.

So today there’s no guest, just me and some thoughts. If you’re not a fan of monologues, this is your chance to run screaming, but I think if you stick around you’ll find what I have to say worth listening to today. I think it’s pretty important.
A mistake I think a lot of folks make in these increasingly polarized times is the genetic fallacy. It’s the sort of thing you encounter when you link to an article about some interesting or important topic and someone immediately responds, “That’s in the New York Times. I would never read anything from them.” Or just swap out the New York Times with any outlet they don’t like. It could be Breitbart. It could be 1P5. I see it all the time. Pretty much every day.
It’s a mistake for two reasons: first, because the truth is the truth, no matter where you find it. I don’t care if you find an answer to what’s going on under a rock or in a trailer park sewer. Facts are facts, and they can usually be verified. Certainly, we should understand the bias of the publication we’re reading if we’re getting information from them, but we should be looking past the opinion or the editorializing and identifying what might be said that is, in fact, real. Because only the Real matters.
The second reason the genetic fallacy is such a huge mistake, I think, is because we are at a strategic disadvantage if we fail to understand the way the enemy thinks. We may think they’re full of it, we may think they have nothing to say that we haven’t heard before, but the fact is, we’re often wrong. Sometimes, they lay out their thinking so clearly that they tell you what they’re planning to do. Right there. In the open. Things you wouldn’t know if you didn’t take the time to read.

In a recent article, John Paul II biographer and Catholic author George Weigel suggested that among the New Year’s resolutions the faithful should adopt this year, they should, “Resolve to limit … exposure to the Catholic blogosphere. In 2019, many Catholic websites went bonkers. There is no need to click on sites that specialize in all-hysteria or all-propaganda all-the-time.”

Guests: Michael Smalanskas, recent Theology & Philosophy graduate (Magna Cum Laude) and former Resident Advisor at Providence College; Catholic author, speaker, and gay outreach evangelist Joseph Sciambra.
Description: Michael Smalanskas, a senior at the Dominican-run Providence College in Rhode Island, was required as a dormitory Resident Advisor to keep a bulletin board updated with informational materials of his choosing. After seeing a bulletin board in another dorm promoting lesbian marriage, Smalanskas decided to put up a pro-marriage bulletin board featuring Scripture and Church teaching on the sacrament. What ensued was a campaign of harassment and intimidation from other students and Resident Advisors, and the cold shoulder from the school’s administration — even after Michael received a drawing he says threatened him with rape. After significant media attention, the president of the college — a Dominican priest — finally released what read as a reluctant statement of condemnation of such acts.
But as graduation approached, Michael found himself facing a new threat: murder. And once again, administration did nothing – except blame the victim.
ALSO (Go to 41:38): Pope Francis recently made headlines again after allegedly telling Chilean sex abuse victim Juan Carlos cruz — a homosexual — that “God made you like this. God loves you like this. The Pope loves you like this and you should love yourself and not worry about what people say.” Former gay man, author, and founder of outreach and apostolate programs for those afflicted with same-sex attraction, Joseph Sciambra, explains why the pope’s comments are doing much more harm than good.
NOTE: After this podcast was recorded, Michael Smalanskas informed us that the college had a restraining order served against him at work today. The college has also issued a no trespass directive against him — even though he’s supposed to be getting married on campus in a matter of weeks.
UPDATE: Steve Maurano, who identified himself as a spokesman for Providence College, contacted us tonight with the following statement: “A civil restraining order was issued by the court after Mr. Smalanskas’ unacceptable conduct toward a member of our community on campus this past weekend. Because of the serious nature of his actions, the College has restricted his access to campus.” When we asked whether they could provide any details on the alleged “unacceptable conduct” — conduct that Smalanskas is denying ever took place with a member of the faculty who has been oppositional towards his position in the past — we were told, “We have no further comment at this time.”

It’s one of the most difficult topics for Catholics to tackle: the cultural rise of homosexual ideology. Joseph Sciambra knows the gay world first hand. As a young man, he left home and went straight to the infamous Castro District of San Francisco, where he did “everything gay that you could imagine.” At some point, though, it got “too dark” for him, and, as Joseph recounts: “Christ just said to me, ‘You can either live or you can die; you can go to hell, or you can have another chance.’ And I took another chance.”
Joseph left behind many years of an “extreme” homosexual lifestyle – broken, sick, wounded. He found healing through Our Lord in the sacraments of the Catholic Church — in particular through priests who modeled manhood and the nobility of the Traditional Latin Mass — and he no longer suffers from same-sex attraction.
Now Joseph goes back into the world he left behind in the 1990s and ministers to those still trapped there. He offers them hope: “I just give them a simple message, and it’s that you do not have to be gay.” This simple message, however, has earned Joseph animosity and hatred from many.
Perhaps the greatest obstacle he faces in his work is not the “gay” community itself, however, but the institutional Catholic Church, which has, in many of its attempts to embrace the sinner, also embraced the sin. He has not been welcomed to speak in parishes, his story is not told by Catholic media, his message is kept silent despite its incredible power of transformation.
If you’re concerned about this issue, if you’re worried about the acceptance of “gay” by the clergy, if you want to know the impact of “Who am I to judge?”, or if you know someone struggling with same sex attraction, this is an episode you can’t afford to miss.

Steve: My guest today is Joseph Sciambra, a Catholic writer, speaker and author of the book “Swallowed by Satan, How Our Lord Jesus Christ Saved Me from Pornography, Homosexuality, and the Occult”. He also has an active outreach ministry in the Castro District of San Francisco knows as “Jesus Loves Gay Men”, he also blogs at JosephSciambra.com. Joseph, thank you so much for being on the podcast.
Joseph: Thank you, Steve.
Steve: You have, I think, a very powerful and unconventional conversion story. Would you mind for those not familiar with you and your work just summarizing kind of your journey and how you’ve gotten to where you are?
Joseph: Sure, I can do it fairly quickly. I was the prodigal son, you know, I wanted everything now. I was raised marginally Catholic but made up my mind fairly early on, and I can get into that more if you want, I mean I grew up in the 1970’s…
Steve: Sure, let’s talk about it.
Joseph: It was the post-conciliar church and there was a lot of emotion, no doctrine, no theology, nothing substantial, no truth, everything was relative, a lot of indifference. You know, we made it up as we went along. And I did that, and decided I was gay and left home. My family was fairly, I wouldn’t say liberal but not Catholic. So they had a problem with me being gay but not a huge problem. I left, went to San Francisco, got into everything I could, I’ve done everything gay that you can imagine and I know that world. But you know like the prodigal son everything just went wrong and I ended up sleeping with pigs, literally, and it just shocked me out of it, and turned around and went home.
Steve: Would you say
Some days, you don’t even make it out of bed before the crazy starts. You check your phone and there it is, another thing you never thought you’d hear coming from the mouth of a pope.

In September of 2014, on the eve of the first Synod on the Family, Steve interviewed Dr. Michael Sirilla, professor of systematic theology at the Franciscan University of Steubenville, on the limits and boundaries of papal infallibility, the assent owed by the faithful to varying levels of magisterial documents, and how the average Catholic may respond to those troubling statements that were, at the time, already coming out of the Vatican.
It was a wide-ranging and in-depth interview. But at the end of the recording, the decision was made that publishing such a frank discussion of these topics — in which the prudence of certain papal actions was openly questioned by a credentialed theologian at a mainstream Catholic college — might be a strategic error. At the time, such candor about the papacy was still taboo. And as a professor with the mandatum to teach theology at a university that adheres to the mandates of Ex Corde Ecclesiae, it also represented a possible personal and professional risk for Dr. Sirilla — whose ability to teach and form students in theology could, in theory, be jeopardized. The podcast was therefore never made public.
Until now.
At Dr. Sirilla’s request, we are, for the first time, publishing this interview. With the release of Amoris Laetitia, the landscape has changed. The topics discussed in this episode are just as relevant now as they were then, if not moreso. We hope you will find it as informative as we did.

Healthcare sharing ministries have been around for decades, but they rose to prominence after the passage of the Affordable Care Act. These organizations act as a replacement for medical insurance. Instead of paying a monthly premium, participants send their monthly contribution to other members with expenses that need to be covered. Until recently, however, there were no explicitly Catholic options.

The power of a Requiem Mass as a sendoff for the souls of those who have departed this life is inestimable. One priest in the diocese of Trier, Germany had come to understand this, and thus placed a request for a Requiem Funeral Mass in his will – a request that was guaranteed in writing by a fellow priest.
But when he died, the Mass was forbidden by Bishop Stephen Ackerman. Ackerman is one of the very same bishops who likes to speak about “mercy” – but only when it involves those living in grave sexual sin, not those who desire something as noble as an authentic Catholic funeral.

The anger one feels at the open and flagrant contempt on display for the Catholic faith from the highest echelons of the Church is perhaps matched only by the astonishing naivete of those members of the faithful who refuse to admit there is a problem. From the tepidity of the Catholic message during the papal visit to the aggrandizement of manifest opponents of the moral law at papal Masses to the conspiracy of known heretics who are so brazen that they admit their misdeeds in public to the never-ending assault of heterodox prelates hand-picked by the pope to have a seat at the Synod…it’s time to be angry. But we mustn’t stop there.

The following is a general transcript of today’s podcast:
The Catholic Church has completely lost its ability to prioritize.
In the midst of a global crisis of faith, where belief in the Real Presence is a minority view for Catholics but contraception use isn’t, we are spending our time talking about the environment and the material needs of the poor.
We have bishops facilitating gay marriage. Bishops proposing that people living in adulterous relationships should be admitted to communion. Bishops who want to legitimize cohabitation and in vitro fertilization. Bishops who have mostly been silent on the horrors revealed in the Planned Parenthood videos. And when a few HAVE spoken out, they’ve made moral equivocation between dismembering children alive and selling their parts to the highest bidder and racism and joblessness, of all things.
We have heretics — actual, open, obvious heretics who flaunt their opposition of Church teaching — being given favored status by the Pope, who is inviting them to have a seat at the table to help determine the Church’s future course of action as regards her moral teaching.
And yet the only enemy everyone can seem to agree on is that thriving island of traditionalism known as the Society of St. Pius X. You may have heard of them – they’re the guys who celebrate the Traditional Latin Mass, hold Traditional Catholic doctrinal positions, and last year they ordained more priests than any diocese in the United States. They believe Pope Francis is the pope and they pray for him. They desire in every way to be fully and completely Catholic.
Sounds dangerous, doesn’t it? We should really beat those guys to a pulp. Clearly, they’re the problem.
What the hell is wrong with us?
Bishop Athanasius Schneider, who I really believe is God’s gift to a Church that has all but completely lost its mind, was made an official observer of the SSPX by the Holy See. I’m not sure how he got the job, because he actually believes in what the Church teaches and is not afraid to say so, but again, God works in mysterious ways. I’ll take it.
And after his most recent visit to the SSPX seminary this past February, he came away with a positive impression. Asked about it in an interview this month, he said he saw “no weighty reasons” that the SSPX shouldn’t be reconciled as they are.
But lest you think I’m paraphrasing, here’s what he said:
“To my knowledge there are no weighty reasons in order to deny the clergy and faithful of the SSPX the official canonical recognition, meanwhile they should be accepted as they are. … When the SSPX believes, worship and conducts a moral live as it was demanded and recognized by the Supreme Magisterium and was observed universally in the Church during a centuries long period and when the SSPX recognizes the legitimacy of the Pope and the diocesan bishops and prays for them publicly and recognizes also the validity of the sacraments according to the editio typica of the new liturgical books, this should suffice for a canonical recognition of the SSPX on behalf of the Holy See.”
He’s not putting the impetus on the SSPX. He’s saying it’s Rome that needs to fix this. There’s no significant reason they shouldn’t have this status. In fact, he says that if Rome doesn’t do this, “the Church of our days will manifestly loose its credibility and the history will one day reproach to the ecclesiastical authorities of our days that they have ‘laid on the brothers greater burden than required’ (cf. Acts 15:28), which is contrary to the pastoral method of the Apostles.” I think we can all agree that the Society is far from perfect, and has made plenty of mistakes in their internal governance and even their approach to the Church. But if there is no significant obstacle to their reunion with...
