Infertility affects every 1 in 6 people. Emily Getz is that 1 in 6, and in the span of a few years experienced a pregnancy loss at 23 weeks, an ectopic pregnancy, and then a miscarriage at 8 weeks.

During her infertility journey, Emily started doing mindset work and using strategies to feel and work through her grief, and envision what she wanted for her future. Because of this work, she started Day1 Fertility to help open the infertility conversation, make it less taboo, and create a safe space for anyone needing answers and someone to talk to.

When Megan came to me this May 2020, amidst the peak of the hardships that came with the pandemic, she was really struggling with binge eating, over exercising, perfectionism in her eating and body checking constantly. On top of all of this, she also had a laundry of food sensitivities that were adding to the complicated nature of all of this – or so she thought. After 4 months of working together through my one-on-one coaching program, The Intuitive Way For Eating, she no longer body checks first thing in the morning, she eats what she wants, she’s much more compassionate with her exercise regime. Oh, and those food sensitivities? We resolved them altogether – and they had nothing to do with the food.

Episode Notes

In this episode we discuss:
- Why Megan reached out for help when she did
- How Megan instilled trust in intuitive eating after following conventional diets for so long
- What was actually at the root of Megan’s food sensitivities
- The major benefits Megan has noticed in her life since adopting and living out the intuitive eating philosophy
- How she made peace with her changing body
- What Megan is able to do now that all of her thoughts aren’t consumed by food and exercise

You’ve heard from my Mom (episode #20), my twin sister (episode #33) and now you’re hearing from my very own Dad, the infamous carry on suitcase unboxer who you may have seen in my Instagram Stories (perhaps one day you’ll hear from my older brother, Rob, too!).

  • My Dad’s thoughts the moment he found out he was having twins
  • How my Dad perceived my eating disorder
  • Why my Dad continued to come up during therapy treatment for my eating disorder

When we think of emotional eating, we often think that’s a “food problem”. But the thing that you’re doing (aka emotional eating) is not the thing. What most people don’t know is that emotional eating is born out unmet needs, that often come from either not knowing our unique needs as humans or ignoring those intuitive “whispers” or gut feelings from your intuition.

In this episode we discuss:

  • What happens when we ignore our intuition
  • Why most people ignore gut feelings
  • The link between your intuition and emotional eating
  • Rachel’s personal story of what came as a result of ignoring her intuition
  • How to listen to your intuition and honour those gut feelings
  • What can happen in your life when you go after what you truly want

Last week I launched my NEW virtual emotional eating support program, The Break Free Method, which teaches a whole new way of looking at and managing emotional eating. One of the strategies I discuss in great depth in the course is the importance of learning how to sit with uncomfortable emotions, rather than flee them by turning to food. It’s something we aren’t really taught as kids. Fast forward to adulthood, and we’re thrown into a society filled with stressors and varying emotions left, right and centre without any idea as to how to cope or deal with them.

Enter: Varvara Erochina; coach, teacher and lifelong student of embodiment. Varvara is formally trained in experiential psychotherapy, spiritual care and coaching. Varvara has spent the last thirteen years offering embodied emotional and spiritual support through one on one and group work, writing, teaching, ritual and facilitation.

In this episode we discuss:

  • The fear of sitting with emotions
  • Reframing emotions and feelings
  • How our emotions can be here for us
  • The influence white supremacy, race and gender have on our emotions
  • The intensity of emotions lasting 90 seconds
  • Hot seat coaching: processing anger
  • Learning to sit with emotions to manage emotional eating
  • How parents can positively support their kids in embracing their emotions
  • Nudity and embodiment

COVID-19 has presented a whole slew of challenges for everyone, especially for brick & mortar businesses like Make Lemonade, a Toronto-based co-working community for women, that’s primary offering thrives off of community, connection and an in-person experience.

This week we talk with Make Lemonade Founder and Chief Lemon, Rachel Kelly, to learn more about how they are pivoting and adapting and how they are literally having to make lemonade out of some pretty rotten lemons at the moment. In this episode we discuss:

  • How Make Lemonade came to be
  • Rachel’s initial thoughts when the pandemic became a reality

There are many things I love about Kirsten Buck, but one of them in particular is her approach to food. If you follow her on Instagram (which you most definitely should @bucknakedkitchen if you aren’t already following her – prepare to DROOL!), you’ll see a beautiful collection of her beautifully prepared and styled whole foods. But amidst the whole foods, you’ll see the occasional ice-cream cone, pizza or french fries as Kirsten shares in this episode how this flexible approach to food and health is what helped her to overcome disordered eating and establish a healthy relationship with food.

Kirsten is also a Holistic Nutritionist, graduating from the Canadian School of Natural Nutrition in 2017, and is the Founder of the popular blog, Buck Naked Kitchen.

And of course, if you like what you see over on her Instagram, you’ll have to pick up a copy of her NEW cookbook, Buck Naked Kitchen over here.

In this episode we discuss:

  • The evolution of Kirsten’s relationship with food
  • Seeking control through food
  • Kirsten’s struggles with Binge Eating Disorder (BED)
  • Nutrition: does it help or harm our relationship with food?
  • Celebrating singlehood
  • Why Kirsten is prioritizing mental health and self-love before a relationship
  • The moment Kirsten got a book deal
  • The making of Buck Naked Kitchen

We’ve all been in the situation where someone has said things like “you look tired” or “you look too thin – you need to eat something” or “have you lost weight? you look so good!” or the best of all, “are you pregnant?”. While most people mean well and don’t have any malicious intent by saying any of these things, the reality is that words are powerful and when such things are said without knowing exactly where the person on the receiving end is at, it has the potential to be harmful and damaging. In many cases, these words leave a lasting effect that end up acting like a catalyst years worth of disordered eating habits.

Here to bring a humourous and sarcastic spin on how we can respond to such comments productively is Summer Innanen – a professionally trained coach specializing in body image, body positivity and confidence.

Summer works with women all over the world to stop living behind the numbers on their scales through her private and group coaching. She is Host of Fearless Rebelle Radio, a podcast dedicated to empowering women to live life on their own terms; the best-selling author of Body Image Remix; and creator of the flagship You, On Fire – a 3 month online program dedicated to helping women break out of the diet culture cage and accept their bodies so they can live their badass lives to the fullest.

In this episode we discuss:

  • Summer’s disordered eating journey
  • How disordered eating habits can often be disguised as “health habits”
  • The key things to explore when healing body image
  • Why positive body image has nothing to do with actually feeling beautiful
  • People’s comments and how they say more about the person saying them rather than the person they’re making the comment to
  • How you response should be tweaked based on the person making the comment
  • Being mindful as the deliveree of comments and the receiver
  • What to say in response to someone making a comment about:
    • Looking tired
    • Being too thin
    • Praise around weight loss
    • Reaching for a second helping at dinner
    • Being pregnant

It was Christmas Eve when Alexie Landry woke up to her deceased husband in bed; a moment, nobody is ever ready for, especially at the age of 35. But when you have a 16-month old to take care of, you just have to keep going.

What came after that – the grief, the mourning, the processing, the connections, the new-found love and romance, the light – could also never have been predicted.

In this episode we discuss:

  • The ever-changing emotions that come with grief
  • Speaking to your kids about death
  • How Alexie’s daughter Adeline took the news of her father’s passing
  • The “widow club” that was born through the mourning and grieving process

Happiness. It seems to be the thing everyone is chasing after but is left constantly yearning for. It doesn’t help that we’re in the dog days of winter here in Canada where the winter blues are alive and well, people are experiencing S.A.D (Seasonal Affective Disorder) and still recovering from the hit their bank accounts took during the holidays.

Here to help us find a little pep in our step and cultivate more happiness in our lives is Happiness Expert, Researcher and Speaker, Dr. Gillian Mandich. Gillian teaches about health, wellness and happiness on a variety of platforms from university classrooms, TV, radio, podcasts, magazines, and is the regular Happiness Expert on the Marilyn Denis show and The Social.

In this episode we discuss:

  • What happiness really is
  • How the pursuit of happiness could be hurting us
  • Happiness: is it a choice, worked for or innate?
  • The tools to help cultivate happiness
  • The importance of experiencing an array of emotions
  • Why sadness is not a “bad” emotion
  • How to find what makes you truly happy
  • Why NOT to put off being happy

Parents simply want the best for their kids. They want to protect them. They want them to be happy. And they want them to be healthy, so they can live a long, enriching life with as little bumps in the road as possible.

And so, many parents do their best to provide this. They do so by keeping “bad” foods out of the house, by emphasizing the harmful effects of sugar, by forbidding them of certain foods that are assumed to result in weight gain and encouraging exercise from an early age.

All of this might not seem very harmful, but what’s happening is that many parents with unresolved disordered eating habits of their own are subconsciously passing off their disordered eating habits to their children, which negatively impacts their relationship with food and could possibly set them up for a lifetime of unhealthy habits around food if not intervened otherwise.

Here to teach us how we can be more mindful of the “healthy habits” we are passing off to our children is Dr. Jillian Murphy, who is a licensed Doctor of Naturopathic Medicine. Dr. Murphy works with families who have children who are struggling to eat competently. Dr. Murphy offers up the most sound, healthful and researched-validated advice for families looking to raise children who are a joy to feed, who grow well and have a great relationship with their bodies.

In this episode we discuss:

  • Why forbidding foods from your kids is doing more harm than good
  • Understanding your influence as a parent in terms of food and body
  • Step-by-step process to raise healthy eaters as per Ellyn Satter’s model
  • The division of responsibility
  • Engaging in healthy habits as a parent that won’t negatively impact your child
  • How to recognize if you’re projecting your own disordered eating habits
  • Healing our own relationship with food before teaching others
  • Understanding your parent’s parenting to better understand your relationship with food
  • Shifting the conversation from being aesthetically focused when speaking with kids

There’s likely no other time of the year you’ll come across as many people employing healthy habits than the start of a New Year. While I’m all for fresh starts, new beginnings and doing things to help you feel your best, fixating and obsessing about health can quickly lead you down a path of unhealthy habits. In some cases, as is often the case with nutritionists, health practitioners and health bloggers, we might see conditions like Orthorexia arise, which comes with a number of severe implications.

In this episode we discuss:

  • Extremist behaviours around health and why they’re actually hurting us
  • The link between Orthorexia and nutrition school
  • Disordered eating disguised as health habits
  • Characteristics of orthorexia
  • The importance of flexibility when engaging in health habits
  • Harm of self-diagnosing health conditions
  • Releasing perfectionist ways around food
  • How to pursue health without obsessing about it
  • Support and resources for those struggling with Orthorexia

You can count on it towards the end of almost every year – the people that reflect back on the year that just passed, cursing its name, and already putting all of their hope into a world’s better upcoming year. “Screw 2019 – bring on 2020!”. The funny thing is that it tends to be the same people saying the same thing, year after year.

To no fault of their own, this is naturally what happens when we choose not to look for the purpose in painful moments. While each year isn’t going to be sunshine and rainbows, there are learning and growth opportunities in the more challenging years. If we can take the lesson and find gratitude for it, it can help us to go into a New Year with a more positive mind and an open heart that will allow us to attract and live out the fulfilling life we were meant to live.

In this episode, I share how I was able to reframe challenging experiences that could’ve broke me, and instead, used them to build me, in addition to:

  • How to be happy now
  • The value of gratitude
  • Happiness as an inside job
  • Walking away from good things and why you need to do it sometimes
  • Reframing a negative experience into a positive one
  • Trusting and surrendering to the journey you’re in
  • Why life is happening FOR you, not TO you
  • Putting an end to the pursuit of happiness
  • 3 Strategies you can take with you into 2020

I met Julie McLachlan (of Jule’s Lifestyle) years ago when I was offering freelance social media management services. The last words I remember her saying to me are, “mark my words – I’m getting a divorce”. Since hearing those words 4 years ago, she’s gotten divorced, found herself in a toxic relationship, had her third child and has undergone breast explant surgery, all while balancing the challenges that already come with balancing multiple businesses and motherhood. What could be understood as a story of things happening TO her has been transformed into a story of how things have happened FOR her as it has allowed her to step into the independent, strong woman she is today.

In this episode we discuss:

  • Trauma bonding as a coping mechanism
  • Gas lighting: what is it and how to be aware of it
  • Understanding your patterns that might be rooted in childhood trauma

You may know Ashley Sauve (@ashleysauvehealth) for her no-BS evidence-based approach to health that she shares on the ‘gram and if you’re an avid follower, you may also know that she lost her mom to pancreatic cancer this time last year. This came after years of growing up around mental illness and addiction, living in many different homes and caring for an ill parent.

You never really know how you’re going to react or be after experiencing something like this, but the way this loss transformed Ashley’s life and how she now sees the world is incredible, as it differs greatly from how she previously viewed the world from a strictly evidence-based perspective.

Disclaimer: While psychedelics are discussed in this episode, please note that we do not recommend using or experimenting with psychedelics and if you choose to do so, it is at your own personal discretion.

In this episode we discuss:

Yup, we’re talking SEX, my friends; a topic that we can all relate to, and when in a group of people, may love to talk about. But when it comes to those deep-rooted desires we don’t want anyone to know about, we feel guilt, shame and are often left feeling dissatisfied as a result of not self-expressing ourselves.

This lack of self-expression in the bedroom is leaking into our everyday life in the way we show up in relationships, for work and for ourselves.

Here to unpack why we feel so much shame around these deep-rooted desires and how we can move closer to self-expression and a more fulfilling sex life is Kathryn Ducey. Kathryn Ducey is a holistic life & career coach and public speaker who helps people connect to their traumas and gives them permission to execute on that and convert that into a life full of emotional and financial wealth. In the work that she dos, she helps people find their why – by tapping into said childhood trauma – so they can turn their why into their career.

In this episode we discuss:

  • Why your “why” matters
  • Challenging why we aren’t doing things that we are innately good at
  • The implications of not being self-expressed in the bedroom and with our sexuality
  • Believing your thoughts are “flawed” and how that affects us as a human
  • Where limiting beliefs around intimacy begin
  • Why Kathryn’s business coach recommended she get a vibrator
  • Thoughts on pornography
  • How a vulnerable conversation with my boyfriend changed my life
  • Fear of rejection and how it relates to self-expression
  • Kathryn’s realization “I’m gay, I think” and what came next
  • Determining where you are on the spectrum
  • An exercise to start tapping into our wants, needs, and fantasies
  • Channeling your feminine energy
  • Normalizing fantasies by conversing with a trusted friend
  • Turning yourself on all day long and calling in energy

It’s not uncommon to hear of someone moan and groan about having to go to the gym or pursue movement in general – and while you might think otherwise, it’s not because people are “lazy”. The problem with how we’ve come to view exercise, fitness and movement as a whole is that we’ve put qualifications around it (i.e. “you need to sweat in order for it to qualify as a workout”).

The other problem is that the mainstream forms of fitness do not address body diversity and are truly not inclusive for every body.

Shannon Hastings – movement educator, a yoga teacher, a creative entrepreneur + a photographer – is here to debunk those myths and share how we can explore intuitive movement to eventually find a form of movement that is sustainable, enjoyable and unique to you! Shannon is passionate about showing people that yoga, movement, meditation and breath work can be for anybody and ANY BODY in an inclusive and supportive safe space.

In this episode we discuss:

  • Shannon’s journey to discovering intuitive movement
  • Fitness competitions and how they can do more harm than good
  • Holding space for others as a practitioner
  • How to seek held space for you
  • Are you bringing diet culture into your fitness classes?
  • Using your ears to listen vs. words to fix
  • The importance of breath work
  • Shannon’s “Anti-yoga” approach and how it differs from conventional yoga
  • Mobility and movement > “Yoga”
  • How practitioners can make movement more accessible and how to seek out inclusive movement
  • The role of Crossfit in recovering from an eating disorder
  • How to be inclusive and mindful of diverse bodies as a practitioner
  • Finding a sustainable form of movement that you love

But what we're going to uncover in this episode, is that someone's ability to not eat a whole bag of chips doesn't come down to willpower at all. In this episode we discuss:

Weight loss is a touchy subject for me these days and I contemplated whether I would bring it to the podcast because I would never want it to trigger someone or sidetrack someone from their intuitive eating journey. In this episode we discuss:

What if therapy didn't have to be a dirty word? What if therapy could be as routine as going to the dentist? What if therapy could take you and your relationship to a place you could have previously only ever dreamed of?

I'm sharing my story and experience of going to couples therapy. While there might not have been anything particularly wrong in my relationship, I knew we could and can be better. From the strategies and concepts we've explored in over 6 months of couples therapy, while things aren't perfect (is anything ever?), we're now able to operate and communicate on a much deeper and connected level.

My hope is that whether you're feeling the same or struggling in your relationship, that you can consider therapy as a resource to help you and your significant other take your relationship to the next level.

In this episode, we discuss:

  • Why we started going to couples therapy
  • What it's like to go through couples counselling
  • How therapy can help you communicate and connect with your partner on a whole new level
  • Why a "perfect relationship" doesn't exist

I've been a health nut for as long as I can remember, excitedly enjoying hummus and carrots at the mere age of 12, until I was faced with anorexia shortly after. While my physical experience with an eating disorder was short lived, the mental effects stuck around for quite some time which evolved into 10 years of disordered eating.

In this episode, we take a trip down memory lane to reflect on those years, how I overcame it and how it brought me to where I am today as a Holistic Nutritionist and a Disordered & Emotional Eating Coach.
