Weight Watchers is a well-known program designed to help people lose weight. However, some dentists have their own “losing” program called “Wait Watchers.” These are dentists who see patients with significant oral health problems, and they suggest “waiting and watching” to see what happens. Whatever the case, you don’t want to be a dentist on Wait Watchers, and this episode of The Productive Dentist Podcast will explain why this approach is problematic, and what steps you can take to avoid it.
Most dentists are spending about 1% of their budget on marketing. Today, I’m starting with and overview of I’m seeing across the industry and reviewing some things you should consider to get your practice through the next few weeks. And looking past this current crisis, I have two pieces of advice for you that will help you protect your business.
Today we're focusing on a current event. Right now I'm sitting here watching some fears unfold across the country. From Coronavirus to oil being slashed by 30% overnight, and the stock markets halting trading after a 7% decline overnight. So let's take a dive in and I'll share my opinions about:
Today we’re diving into part 2 about using predictive analytics to understand your business and manage growth. What predictive analytics really means is I’m running my business like a real business. You have to set goals, you have to commit to them. So let’s jump into:
If we don’t have a business model that’s working really well it frustrates us. We have a lot of risk and debt and we’re working hard…we should be making more money. The question is why aren’t we? Today, I’m going to talk about what I did in my practice that let me predict and control my business:
Do I need an associate? Well, that’s a loaded question. I’ve had about 10 associates over the years and worked with close to 1,000 offices. So I’m going to share my thoughts about what forms success in an associate position and what doesn’t. Here’s some of what we’ll cover in today’s episode:
Most dentists are spending about 1% of their budget on marketing. I market at 8% and what I realized was not only was my market penetration getting better, my overhead was also going down. That’s the concept of net zero marketing: as you start producing more, you drive all your fixed costs down. So today I’m going to dive into how net zero marketing can help you grow your business and profits.
I’ve noticed something in all the work and presentations I do to dentists around the world - all the problems we have are pretty universal. Patients don’t show. We have to market our practices. Patients don't accept our treatment plans. The good news is, we’re not alone. Today, I’m talking about different ways you can find help and what to look for when vetting options.
The PPO trap is something I’ve watched develop over the past 20 years in dentistry. At their heart, they are basically a marketing company; they’re bringing you patients and you’re paying them. For some dentists, having a PPO as part of your business plan makes sense. But for other dentists, it takes a huge part of your hard-earned overhead. So today, I want to talk about your career, mindset, marketing budget, and more in relation to PPOs.
What is the most important thing you can do as a dentist as you prepare for tomorrow? Just as a reminder my biggest focus is productivity. So in the past 40 years, I’ve trained my team to handle the morning huddle. I don’t even go to the morning meeting because I empower my team and hold them accountable for those aspects of my practice. So today, I’m going to talk about how I spend my prep time to ensure I stay productive and connected to patients.
What happens to productivity when you’re stressed out? It doesn’t take a genius to know productivity goes down. I don’t know about you, but I want to keep my stress low and my production high. So here’s a question: how do you handle the stresses that bother you, your team, and your patients? Today, we’re doing to talk about how to reduce stress by handling objections before they become objections.
Annual Planning is something I’ve done every single year in the last 36 years in my practice. At the end of the year, I look at my numbers for this year versus the previous year and ask myself these questions: What have I focused on, what have I not focused on? What were my goals? Did I reach my goals? So today I want to walk through each of these topics and why I look at them.
What I’ve noticed in my years as a leader and practice owner is people who have an abundance mentality tend to attract the best of the best. This can make all the difference in how you come to work and deal with people. Today we’re going to talk about what it means to have a mentality of abundance or scarcity and the effect that has on your business and life.
Today we’re going to talk about one of the most important things you can do in your career. What are your goals? What are you doing? Where do you want to be in 1 year? 3 years? 5 years? This is something I have done my entire career that has allowed me to set achievable, attainable goals, but also allowed me to dream a little. Today, I’m going to talk about your 1, 3, 5 and what the purpose behind each goal is.
Recorded during my recent trip to Zimbabwe, I’m joined in today’s episode by my dear friends Victoria Peterson and JW Oliver. JW runs two companies called Global BP Solutions and SupportDDS.com that help provide resources and employees from oversees to dental offices. I only have two goals as a dentist – to take great care of my patients and to reach my goals. The people I work with allow me to reach those goals. Working with Global BP Solutions and SupportDDS allows me and my team to do what we do best, and live the PDA core value of Doing Good While Doing Good. Join us today as we discuss the wonderful impact SupportDDS has on our businesses.
I love answering your questions…after all, if one person is asking, then others are probably wondering too. Today, I’ll cover your question on:
More questions keep on rolling in so today I’m going to answer your questions about:
Today I’m answering more of your questions about how to increase production and productivity in your office. The questions we cover in this episode include:
Questions have come flooding in so I’m going to spend a little more time answering your questions. I know I’ve said this before, but I’m always happy to cover any topics of interest to you on this podcast, so please keep asking. Today, I answer these top listener questions:
My inbox has been flooded with numerous questions from doctors around the country. So today I’m going to answer the questions that keep popping up about scheduling. These came directly from our listeners and I’m always happy to answer any questions you might have about any of the topics I discuss on this podcast. Today I’ll cover the following questions:
One of the hot topics right now is getting rid of PPOs. After all, with a PPO you’re writing off 30-40% of your productivity to these big corporations. That’s a big price tag for putting patients in your chairs. But what if you took that 30-40% and put the money to marketing toward fee-for-service patients who would support your practice goals? Now I’m not opposed to dentists signing up for PPOs; for some doctors it works. But today I’m going to give you a way to intentionally and strategically move away from the PPO environment and increase your productivity and increase profit like never before.
If you’re anything like me, you get emails and letters that offer to get you massive amounts of new patients. It sounds good up front, but you end up with all these patients who aren’t qualified for the work you want to do. As I learned in my own practice…marketing doesn’t always work how you intend. So today I’m going to talk about a marketing lesson I learned and how PDA | Marketing Group helped me find a good marketing message mix that supported my practice goals.
It's great to have all the technology, but it will also put you out of business. My wife told me a long time ago that if I hadn’t bought all this stuff that I probably would have been able to retire 20 years ago. One of my team members who handles all the ordering hates it when I go to a meeting and buy a new piece of equipment. Most of the time the equipment ends up on a shelf and when she asks me what it’s for I can’t remember. So, I just want to share a little bit today about how I look at technology and some of the protocols I use when deciding to acquire new technology.
“Who needs coaches anyway?” Well, every all-star and championship winning sports player and team has a coach or group of coaches. So why do people who are so good at their sport need coaches? This is something that really bugs me about dentistry; we have a lot of groups and people talking on Facebook about “oh you can do it yourself, you don’t need a coach.” Let me tell you, over my 39 years of practice, I had 9 different coaching groups come into my office to help me. Why? Because I knew early on that I didn’t know how to run a business so I would need to invest in myself and my practice. Today, I’m going to talk about the coaching I’ve had through my career and what types were most helpful for getting me to the professional and personal levels I wanted to reach.
“Today’s message is simple, be happy.” I’ve talked before about the smiley face and the frowny face that my staff used to put up in the break room to let everyone know what mood I was in. That was a big realization moment for me that I needed to change the way I thought about how I presented myself to my team. Today we’re going to talk about how you and your team should be in their happy place, some of the comments you should be aware of that can help you judge how you’re acting, and how it affects the people around you.
“We surveyed accounts receivable team members and 91% would rather hike 5 miles in the desert with no water or eat brussels sprouts 7 days a week than do collection calls.” Today we’re going to talk about something near and dear to every dentist’s heart, accounts receivable. The truth is accounts receivable is not an easy thing to do in dentistry; the work has already been done and the patient may not have been educated about the balance. In fact, your AR team spends 83% of their time working with insurance companies, which means the only spend 17% of their time actually doing collect calls. Today I’m going to talk about how I improved my accounts receivable through a program called Abella.

“The truth is, my life just really wasn’t working at that point,” says my special guest and practice partner, Dr. Jeff Buske. “I was taking the stress of things at work home to the people who loved me the most, and not giving them the best part of myself.” Today, Dr. Buske and I chat more about that point that hit him between the eyes with his life and practice, what he did to get himself back on track, and how reflection and failures can help us get to where we really want to be.
“Everybody at heart wants to be abundant and share and give to people, but I think their perception of where they are isn’t true.” Dr. Jeff Buske joins me again for a conversation about abundance and scarcity. Today’s discussion dives into perceptions, what contributes to a mentality of scarcity or abundance vs. the reality of a situation, and how you and your thought processes can influence the abundance in your life and practice.
“I don’t think any of us are necessarily broken, it’s just that my priorities changed,” says Dr. Jeff Buske, my practice partner of 15 years, who joins me for another podcast discussion today, this time to discuss the producer and the pretender in all of us. I think a lot of doctors get locked into working on patients, coming home, working on patients, and like Dr. Buske says, “When you have things in your life that aren’t working, you look for the solutions that will make things work.” Join us as we talk about our driving principles and how to hold ourselves accountable to those principles.
“I was at a point in 2004 where I was considering walking away from dentistry,” says Dr. Jeff Buske, my good friend and practice partner for the past 15 years. Jeff was kind enough to join me for today’s podcast to talk about abundancy and what led to the creation of Compassionate Finance. Today we talk about what sparked the idea that grew into Compassionate Finance and some real-life, practical examples of how to use it in your practice.
“It’s counterintuitive. It’s 180 degrees from anything anyone has ever taught you.” We’ve talked a little bit about what Compassionate Finance is and how it works, but there are many, many ways to use it in your office. Today, we’re going to talk about how to utilize it and what some best practices are.
Patients want to see you for the work they need done. But what if they don’t have insurance or just can’t afford it? This is where Compassionate Finance comes in. Let me tell you something interesting, when offices stopped offering 3rd party financing and only gave patients two options – cash or monthly payments – cash payers went up by 39%. Today we’re going to talk more in depth about how Compassionate Finance works and what it can do for your practice.
Nine years ago, my practice partner Dr. Buske asked me, “Hey Bruce, do you think we could finance ortho?” That sparked a longer conversation about costs and interest and how to best serve the needs of our patients. I’d spent years telling doctors not to be the bank, but I wondered if there was a way to help our patients. Compassionate Finance was the result. Today we’re going to talk about how in-house financing - specifically Compassionate Finance - can help you increase your revenue and help all your patients afford the dental care they want and need.
There are some things in dentistry that we believe that are just not true. Today I’m going to cover a few myths in dentistry and what the reality of the situation is. Just a few of the topics will include the myths that access to care is a problem and you need large numbers of new patients to succeed. Listen in for more myths, and a few little secrets that could help your practice today.
The average bank account balance in America right now is $4,400 and the average credit card balance is $18,500. So what happens if you have a treatment plan that’s up around $9-10,000? Well, right now the economy is pretty good, but what happens if it goes down? The reality is we have to find ways to make dentistry more affordable to patients. So today we’re going to talk about financial options that could help your office and your patients.
I always tell doctors there are two kinds of people in this world: engineers and non-engineers. The engineer is the one who needs to have all the info before they make a decision; they’re the ones who want to know the molecular makeup of the material you’re going to use. The non-engineer needs to trust you. The truth is about 80% of dentists think like engineers, while about 80% of your patients don’t. Today we’re going to talk about how to not lose productivity and how to take advantage of the opportunities to take care of people.
In part 1 of this two-part series, we talked about the process of how we go through an examination. How I do it is all new patients come through me first, and we see a 37% increase in productivity when I see the patient first as opposed to hygiene. It also keeps us on track with our schedule. Today we’re going to talk about more best practices for handling new patient exam from what to look for, how to communicate with the patient, and how to get them to “yes” and make them a patient for life.
