When it comes to thermal optics there seems to be a high degree of confusion and mystery. In no area is that more clear than when it comes to the thermal scope zeroing process. There are many myths that seem to be ever present among many who haven’t had the chance to spend a good deal of time behind a thermal scope. Today Hans and Jason intend to dispel a few of the most common myths they hear about on a regular basis. After listening to this episode they hope you will have more confidence when it comes time for your first thermal purchase!
On this episode Hand and Jason wanted to do something a little different and in honor of Father's Day, they wanted to dedicate a show to all the father's out there who have helped foster the love of the outdoors in their children. Almost all of us who enjoy hunting, shooting and the outdoors had a male figure, usually a father, grandfather or uncle who took us under their wing and introduced us to hunting and shooting. They also take time out of the the second half of the show to honor the life of Jason's late father and how he was so instrumental in making Outdoor Legacy the company that it is today. Most often here on The Late Night Vision Show our topic and discussions revolve around hunters and outdoorsmen. Often times we get phone calls from customers who are looking to find a high quality, yet affordable combination of a night vision and a thermal handheld. A common question we get from both new and seasoned night hunters alike is how we judge distances at night, especially when using thermal optics. Some people believe the only solution is by purchasing an optic with a built in laser range finder (LRF) and while that's definitely the easiest and "best" method, it's also the most expensive. There are other methods for getting a decent idea of the distance an animal is but they usually either involve some prior investigation into the property your hunting and/or a lot of intentional practice using your optic. Round 2 of the "Best of" for 2020 is under way and this week we are considering the Best Thermal Rifle Scopes under $4,000. Recently the ATF has caused a large stir about the use of braces on AR-15 pistols and they even deemed a previously ATF approved pistol/brace firearm as an illegal short barrel rifle. This week on The Late Night Vision Show Hans and Jason review the Sightmark Wraith HD 2-16x28 that was a surprise announcement by Sightmark in August of 2020. The Wraith HD 2x is the "little brother" to the Wraith HD 4x, which is the best selling digital NV scope in the country. We're back again with yet another scope review and this one has been a long time coming. In January 2020 at the SHOT Show, Sightmark announced the Wraith 4K Max that was scheduled to begin shipping in early Spring. What no one could have predicted is how only a few short weeks later the coronavirus would turn the US upside down. We often have viewers and listeners ask what tripod setups we use while hog and coyote hunting. This week we discuss and offer our full review of the Kopfjager tripod systems. Traditionally in the hunting industry all new products are announced at or around the time of the annual SHOT Show, which is held every January in Las Vegas. This week on The Late Night Vision Show we have the rare occasion of discussing a current news article directly relating to the thermal and night vision industry. Last week (September 6, 2019) Forbes released an exclusive article announcing that the US Dept. of Justice has asked Google and Apple to turn over the personal information of all users of the ATN Obsidian App that is used in conjunction with many of ATN's thermal and digital night vision optics. The DOJ claims they have reason to believe there has been illegal exportation of ATN scopes to foreign countries and they claim the personal user information from this app will aid them in their investigation. The DOJ says that ATN is not under investigation. In Episode 24 Jason and Hans talk about the common problem of over estimating hog weights. Having both used scales extensively to weigh dead hogs they know that hogs rarely weigh as much as people think they do. They discuss this in a serious but light-hearted conversation. In the second segment of the podcast they discuss realistic shooting distances when night hunting. Many hunters who are new to night hunting are often under the impression that shooting 300-500 yards at night is not only common but easy. They guys talk about how rare and even dangerous these types of shots can be without a great deal of experience and expertise. Many states, especially in the South have large hog and deer populations. Every Fall on deer leases and managed clubs many night time hog hunters are asked to stop hunting hogs so that they don’t scare off the deer. On this week’s episode of The Late Night Vision Show Hans and Jason debate the question of whether night time hog hunting scares off deer and if hog hunters should hang up the NV scopes until deer season is over.
