On this episode Hand and Jason wanted to do something a little different and in honor of Father's Day, they wanted to dedicate a show to all the father's out there who have helped foster the love of the outdoors in their children. Almost all of us who enjoy hunting, shooting and the outdoors had a male figure, usually a father, grandfather or uncle who took us under their wing and introduced us to hunting and shooting. They also take time out of the the second half of the show to honor the life of Jason's late father and how he was so instrumental in making Outdoor Legacy the company that it is today. From The Late Night Vision Show, we say Happy Father's Day to all you father's out there!

The time has come for the kick off of our "Best Optics of 2023" show series as usual we're getting started with one of the most popular categories that we call "Entry Level Thermal". The issue is that we hate to call most of these scopes "entry level" because the quality is so good but they are on the bottom of the price list for quality thermal. But honestly, the under $3,000 price category just keeps getting better and better and more expensive optics are seeing price drops and getting pushed into this category. On this show Hans and Jason will pick their personal favorites from the list and let you know what they like and why. On Ep. 288 of The Late Night Vision Show Jason and Hans discuss the topic of using a thermal rifle scope as both a scope and a handheld thermal for scanning. On last week's show they talked about more budget friendly options for buying a thermal monocular and a digital night vision scope but many people still prefer to spend their money on a single thermal optic and then possibly buy a dedicated thermal scanner later. On this show they will lay out the pros and cons of using a single optic as both a scanner and scope and also list off some models of each brand that are best suited as dual purpose optics.

Often times we get phone calls from customers who are looking to find a high quality, yet affordable combination of a night vision and a thermal handheld. The benefit of this setup is being able to use the thermal monocular for quick detection of animals and using the night vision scope for positively identifying and shooting the animal. This is an excellent combo for hunters on a somewhat tighter that budget that doesn't quite allow them to purchase two thermals but it still gives them the best of both worlds, identification and quick detection. Listen as Hans and Jason offer suggestions on both night vision scopes and thermal handheld combos.

Because of this many coyote hunters want to buy both a thermal monocular and thermal rifle scope at the same time but fit it into a certain budget. Today Hans and Jason offer suggestions on thermal handhelds and thermal rifle scopes that will compliment each other well and fit into a $5,000 total budget for both optics combined. We hope this gives coyote hunters a good starting place for optics to consider when looking for a monocular and scope combo.

A topic and question that comes up a lot is how we manage late nights of hunting with family life, work schedules and lack of sleep. On this episode Hans and Jason talk about how they try to maintain busy work schedule, family time and night hunting, all while keeping a good balance and not neglecting the really important aspects of life but still getting plenty of hours in the field after dark. Everyone's schedules are different and not everyone has the luxury of hunting close to home, so sometimes that means cramming as much hunting into one or two nights as possible. For others it's possible to get a few hours in several times a week. Hans and Jason offer their thoughts on the subject and explain how they try to keep a good healthy balance in their lives.

In our opinion the only thing better than a really good thermal scope is when the manufacturer improves it to make it even better. This week we review the Pulsar Talion XQ35 Pro which is the new replacement for the extremely popular Talion XQ38. While maintaining the same great price of $2499 and all the same features, Pulsar put a new upgraded thermal sensor in the scope, giving it an even better image quality than before that will definitely show its true improvement in wet, humid poor conditions. Check out this review to learn all about the new Talion XQ35 Pro.

As InfiRay Outdoor continues to innovate and bring more optics to the market, this week we present to you the Rico Hybrid. While this unique optic looks and functions exactly as any normal thermal rifle scope does, it can also be placed in front of a glass daytime traditional rifle scope and be used as a "clip-on". This allows the daytime scope sees through the thermal sensor, thus turning your daytime scope into a temporary night optic. The Hybrid offers some of the best 640 high resolution thermal image quality you can find on the US market today and with it's 3x base magnification, it is an excellent scope for predator and coyote hunters and even many hog hunters. The Hybrid also comes with iRay USA's 5 year warranty and service. Tune in as Jason and Hans offer their opinions on this new scope and they give an honest review of how it functions as not just a thermal scope but also a clip-on.

As the Texas summer sets in we were very happy to have a visit from our friend and returning guest of the Late Night Vision Show, Tym Dore of N-Vision Optics. Tym came to visit us while making a "Texas tour" and we took this opportunity to have him back on the podcast for an update of what's new at N-Vision as well as revisiting some of the most popular optics in their current line up. Also making his first experience on the podcast is our newest salesman at Outdoor Legacy, Ashley Rowe. As we enter into the summer slowdown of night hunting, often considered the “off season” by many, Jason and Hans take some time to answer common questions about how to care for your thermal or NV optic, batteries, how to clean it, store it etc. Some hunters, depending on their local laws or their hardcore dedication to night hunting might not have a real “off season” but there is still good practices for maintaining a night scope to ensure it performs its best for a long as possible.

Are hog and predator hunting tournaments bad for the sport of night hunting? This is an interesting discussion that Hans and Jason discuss on today's show. Some hunters contend they are bad for the sport because they give anti-hunters more fuel to throw at the sport, while others say the tournaments decimate the hog and predator populations. On the other side of the coin many hunters see the tournaments are a fun competition for something they are already out doing and a great way to introduce new hunters to the sport. Where do you fall? When it comes to buying a new thermal or night vision optic there is a lot of confusion and questions around the different body, styles of optics, as well as the different types of battery pack systems. On this episode of the podcast Jason and Hans are excited to review yet another new and amazing advance in night optics. This week we review the Pulsar Thermion Duo DXP50, that is the first hunting rifle scope to combine both a high end 640 resolution thermal optic with a 4K ultra high resolution day time optic. With this single scope you have the option of one of the best 2x base magnification thermal images on the market today and/or an amazing 4K full color daytime image at 2x base magnification as well. And if that's not enough, Pulsar built in the ability to quickly switch between the two technologies and even allows you to use both at the same by enabling the Picture in Picture feature at the top of the screen. This lets you view the opposite spectrum in the PiP as what you're viewing in the main screen. Does this sound confusing? Trust us, it's not at all, and it's one of the easiest scopes on the market to operate. Watch this review to see actual footage from the field in both day and night conditions to see what the scope is truly capable of.

A common question we get from both new and seasoned night hunters alike is how we judge distances at night, especially when using thermal optics. Some people believe the only solution is by purchasing an optic with a built in laser range finder (LRF) and while that's definitely the easiest and "best" method, it's also the most expensive. There are other methods for getting a decent idea of the distance an animal is but they usually either involve some prior investigation into the property your hunting and/or a lot of intentional practice using your optic. On this show Jason and Hans talk about how they judge distance when night hunting and what their suggestions are to help you become better at it as well.

AGM has made a name for themselves by bringing multiple models of both handheld and rifle mounted thermals to the market that are full featured, reliable, user friendly and a very good value for the dollar. Now that AGM has three different scope model groups including their flagship line of Rattlers, the Varmint LRF and their latest release of the Adders in a traditional day time scope design, there has been confusion from consumers on the differences between them all and the often asked question of "which model is the best?". Our answer to that question is always "it depends". On this show Hans and Jason will go over the basic specs and benefits of each model and offer their thoughts on who each scope is good for. While this won't answer every question, hopefully it will help clear up some confusion on the different models and help narrow down the list for hunters looking to purchase a thermal scope to suit their needs. If you have more questions about which scope is right for you and your situation, don't hesitate to give Hans and Jason a call and they will be glad to help.

Here on The Late Night Vision Show we take the 2nd Amendment very seriously. We do not like to see our liberties being infringed on by our elected officials and as voters and American citizens we feel it is our duty to vote for men and women who will respect and protect our freedoms. Laser Range Finders.....does everyone need one on their NV or thermal optic? Are they just all hype? Are they worth the cost? On this week's podcast Jason and Hans answer all those questions and more. The current trend with thermal optics, both handheld and rifle mounted, is for them to include a built in or add on laser range finder. As more and more LRF's become available, naturally more night hunters wonder if they are tools or toys. On this show the guys break down range finders from start to finish and offer their opinions on who needs one and who doesn't.

It's review time again and this round is for all the digital night vision guys. And if you're looking for a top of the line, high end digital NV optic, this episode is just for you. When it comes to top quality digital night vision, Pulsar has held the title for the best of the best for as long as we can remember and the new Digex C50 is everything we hoped it would be. With the C50 Pulsar has jumped into the full color daylight mode option that's been lacking on their units in the past, but in typical Pulsar style, when they do something, they do it right. The Digex C50 is full color during the day, has a full color low light mode and black and white at night. With a 3.5x base magnification, all the Pulsar features and bells and whistles you'd expect and a price tag of $1,399, there is a lot to love about this new scope. Check out this review to see if the C50 is right for you.

It's not often that we can say that an optic we review is "revolutionary" and trust us, we don't use that word lightly. But this week we will be using that word a lot as we discuss the new InfiRay Zoom ZH38 thermal monocular that is truly one of a kind. While providing a great 640 high resolution image, the Zoom offers two features that no other thermal hunting optic ever has....optical zoom and a shutterless calibration. If you're familiar with thermal optics and the lingo, you're still probably scratching your head wondering how that's possible. If you aren't familiar with thermal optics you're probably scratching your head wondering what those two things mean. Well sit down, buckle up and check out Ep. 199 because we believe you're going to be very interested to hear about this really amazing thermal handheld.

The two models are the CBL19 2x for $1,799 and the CBL25 2.5x for $2,099. With a 384x288 resolution 12 micron sensor the image quality is excellent and with a 6+ hour removable/rechargeable battery these units are great for both hog and coyote hunters. The consumers spoke, Pulsar listened and delivered. Today we review an optic unlike anything we've ever used or reviewed on this podcast. The Pulsar Trionyx T3 is revolutionary in the fact that it combines digital night vision and thermal imaging into one handheld device and then offers a 3rd option of fusing or overlaying the two technologies at once. A common desire for hunters, farmers and property owners is to be able to quickly detect an animal or a person at a long range and then be able to positively ID who or what it is once it gets closer. Up until now that required two separate optics, one thermal and one night vision. With the Trionyx, those have all been combined into one. Check out this episode as Hans and Jason give their full field review of this new optic and help you determine if this is the right optic for your needs.

When it comes to comparing two thermal scopes, one of the most common ways is to create a side by side video comparison. The problem with this is, there are so many variables at play that it rarely works out well. For instance, is the creator of the video biased? Did they intentionally or unintentionally manipulate the video, did they have both scope's settings properly adjusted, are they comparing two scopes that can even be fairly compared? This time around we have a very different topic for  our listeners and viewers and while it's not directly related to hog or  coyote hunting, night vision or thermal, it is related to firearms. This  week Hans and Jason sit down to discuss their favorite handguns. They  explain what pistols they carry concealed on a daily basis, which ones  they chose to carry with them in the field hunting and also their  overall favorite handgun. While the topic a little different than  normal, they get a lot of questions about rifles, handguns, ammo and  gear so they thought they'd spend some time explaining what pistols they  carry and why. Questions. If there is one word that sums up what compromises most of the hours of the week for both Hans and Jason, it's probably "questions". Episode 147 is another round of the “No Show SHOT Show” series and as we continue spotlighting the biggest and best brands in the thermal and night vision industry and this week is no exception as we talk about Bering Optics. While not new to the industry, admittedly there is no other brand in recent memory that has made such a splash and name for themselves over a 12 month period as Bering Optics. We’re finally taking a short break from scope reviews this week to catch our breath and discuss a topic some of our listeners have been asking about. Recently the ATF has caused a large stir about the use of braces on AR-15 pistols and they even deemed a previously ATF approved pistol/brace firearm as an illegal short barrel rifle. Many shooters in the night hunting community use AR pistols on a regular basis and this recent ruling could open the door for even broader reversals of previous ATF approvals. Listen as Hans and Jason weigh in on this current event.

This week on The Late Night Vision Show Hans and Jason review the Sightmark Wraith HD 2-16x28 that was a surprise announcement by Sightmark in August of 2020. The Wraith HD 2x is the "little brother" to the Wraith HD 4x, which is the best selling digital NV scope in the country. We are extremely excited about this scope because of the lower base magnification and much wider field of view than it's counterpart. For hog and predator hunters that are mostly shooting under 150 yards, we believe this is THE scope to buy. The scope packs in all the same great Wraith HD features, such as full color HD daylight mode, a great black and white night time image, video recording, multiple color reticles and super easy menu system that is great for both the experienced hunter and first time night vision users as well.

We're back again with yet another scope review and this one has been a long time coming. In January 2020 at the SHOT Show, Sightmark announced the Wraith 4K Max that was scheduled to begin shipping in early Spring. What no one could have predicted is how only a few short weeks later the coronavirus would turn the US upside down. Sightmark announced they'd be delaying the production of the Wraith 4K Max until fall and they are now ready to begin the rollout of these new scopes. Jason and Hans have had a final production unit in their hands for close to 2 months now and have spent a lot of time using it and learning it's capabilities. To say this is one of the most advanced and best digital NV optics ever produced to date is an understatement. The amazing day and night 4K resolution image quality is like nothing we've ever seen out of a digital night vision scope. Listen as Hans and Jason tell all about the Wraith 4K Max, their opinions on how it performs in the field and who it is good and even who it's not good for. We’ve had a lot of important industry news on this podcast but we think this has the potential to be some of the biggest news we’ve ever announced here. On today’s podcast we break the news of the new Pulsar Thermion XG50 thermal rifle scope. What makes the XG50 so exciting is that it utilizes the BAE 640x480 12 micron thermal core. This is the exact same thermal core that Trijicon and N-Vision use in their high end thermal rifle scopes. But Pulsar didn’t just stop there, they did something that no one else has ever been able to do; they have included internal video and audio recording, as well as all the other Pulsar features, such as, a smart phone streaming app, picture in picture, removable/rechargeable battery packs, color pallets and more. We are honored to bring you this exclusive interview recorded at the Pulsar USA/Sellmark facility with Jeff Murray, VP of Sales and Chase Stephens, US Thermal Market Manager. In this day and age, most people know they shouldn't believe everything they read on the internet. When it comes to thermal and night vision optics, that same wisdom holds true. While there are many knowledgeable hunters and NV dealers, there are even more who don't have the hands on experience and intimate knowledge to offer the expert advice that someone in the market for an night optic needs, however....that never seems to stop them. And let us be clear, Hans and Jason are NOT saying they are the sole source of good information because there are many other very knowledgeable and experienced hunters and dealers out there who can offer great advice as well. In this episode, listen as the guys discuss some of the pitfalls of getting bad information from the internet and how you can avoid that mistake.

We’re back this week with another show addressing some very common questions that we get about coming to Texas to hunt hogs. Many people are curious about where to start when it comes to finding a hog hunting outfitter. When driving hours, sometimes across many states and possibly spending a large sum of money, you need to be informed on what to look for and even more importantly what to look out for. While there are many great outfitters in Texas and the South, sadly there are also some that aren’t quite so great. On this show we list many things you need to consider, research and questions to ask when beginning your search for a hog hunting outfitter.

Sometimes the smallest things can turn into something much larger than anyone could have ever imagined. This week‘s podcast is a perfect example of that. Several weeks ago Hans offhandedly told a story about finding what appeared to be a small fresh grave with a white cross in the middle of the woods on his family’s property, while he was out hunting one night. This turned into several weeks of podcast listeners begging him to find out what was buried there. Hans avoided the issue for as long as possible but this week...he finally gave in and revisited the grave. Listen to this episode....one of the most off topic shows we’ve ever recorded, to see how this story ends!

On this week’s show Hans and Jason dissect some of the behind the scenes possible reasons why FLIR closed down their Outdoor Tactical Systems division and stopped making thermal rifle scopes for the general public. Many people believe FLIR’s decision was based solely on anti-hunting or political reasons but Jason brings to light financial issues that FLIR OTS was struggling with for over a year and that they’d publicly discussed in their quarterly reports. In the latter part of the show the guys talk about how the FLIR departure affects the entire thermal/NV industry and they also offer up a brief overview of the current state of the industry as a whole.

After buying a night vision or thermal scope and using it for a while, very often the next step for hunters is to begin considering the purchase of a handheld thermal optic. When looking at the pricing structure of many of the lower prices thermal monoculars, it quickly becomes obvious that they are priced extremely similar to comparable thermal weapons mountable scopes. Then comes the big dilemma…. ”Should I buy a dedicated handheld optic or a scope that can function as a monocular and a back up scope if needed?” On this week’s podcast Hans and Jason talk about the pros and cons of both options and discuss what when and if they believe you should buy a thermal scope instead of a dedicated monocular to be used as a handheld spotter.

We often have viewers and listeners ask what tripod setups we use while hog and coyote hunting. This week we discuss and offer our full review of the Kopfjager tripod systems. Kopfjager is best known for their Reaper Grip that allows a shooter to quickly and easily lock in any rifle and have it held steady on a tripod. The shooter is then able to actually let go of the rifle and it still be held securely on the top of the tripod without moving or falling over. Not only does this make for steady shots, it allows the hunter to relax without having to hold the buttstock of the rifle up on those long stands and sets. Listen in as Hans and Jason offer their opinions and thoughts from their first hand field experience with the Kopfjager tripod and grip system.

Even though it's only October, many people start to ask, "Hey, what new scopes are coming out next year?" Honestly, that's a million dollar question that we don't have the answer to. Traditionally in the hunting industry all new products are announced at or around the time of the annual SHOT Show, which is held every January in Las Vegas. Even though it's almost 4 months away, Hans and Jason decided they'd get out their crystal balls (which are pretty foggy and of very low quality) and  come up with their predictions for what new scopes and optics we might see for the night vision and thermal industry in 2020. Along with their wild, baseless, unsubstantiated predictions they decided they'd go ahead and throw out their wish list of what they'd like to see come out next year. Tune and see what they have to say but remember, their predictions can be trusted about as much as a fortune cookie from the seedy Chinese food place in town that everyone is scared to eat at.

What’s the one tool that very few deer hunters are currently using but would revolutionize deer hunting as we now know it? Thermal imaging. No, we’re not talking about hunting deer at night with thermal scopes! We’re talking about using a thermal monocular or scope to spot and locate deer from the stand during daylight shooting hours and then finding dead or wounded deer in the trees, brush or grass after the shot. This week, Hans and Jason explain how deer hunters can use thermal imaging to give themselves a huge advantage in seeing deer that are hiding in plain sight during daylight conditions.

This week on The Late Night Vision Show we have the rare occasion of discussing a current news article directly relating to the thermal and night vision industry. The DOJ claims they have reason to believe there has been illegal exportation of ATN scopes to foreign countries and they claim the personal user information from this app will aid them in their investigation. The DOJ says that ATN is not under investigation. “Should I buy a 640x480 scope? Is high resolution really worth it?” This is one of the most common questions Hans and Jason hear when talking to customers about thermal optics. When asked, many night hunters and thermal dealers will give an automatic “Yes!” reply. However, others who often haven’t had a lot of experience using many different scopes, might give a quick “No, it’s not worth it!” reply. So what do Hans and Jason say? What’s their quick answer? As usual, they don’t have a quick answer because, in reality, this is a very complicated answer that depends on many different factors and variables in each person’s situation. One of the most confusing aspects of thermal optics is all the different specs and jargon that gets thrown around. Thermal core resolution, pixel pitch microns, NUC’ing and the list goes on. Sometimes it sounds like a whole other language is being spoken when the discussion of thermal scopes comes up. On this week’s episode of The Late Night Vision Show, Hans and Jason take the most commonly discussed thermal specifications and offer an in depth explanation of each one in every day, layman’s terms. They explain what each spec means and how it affects the scope in a practical way. If you’ve ever been confused about thermal optics, this is the episode for you!

A question we’ve been getting repeatedly is, “how does the Sightmark Wraith HD compare to the Sightmark Photon RT?” That’s a great question so this week on the podcast Hans and Jason decided to tackle the issue with a side by side, head to head comparison of both scopes. The Photons have been the most reliable, affordable and popular digital night vision scopes on the market for 5 years and now their largest competition comes from within…..the Sightmark Wraith HD. Hans and Jason offer up their opinions on both optics and tell which scope they see as the better overall digital night vision optic.

On Episode 49 of the podcast we talk about a few current updates in the night vision and thermal industry, as well discussing two hunting and shooting related news stories that have been in the mainstream headlines recently. In the 2nd segment we talk about building and using pig pipes. For those that are unfamiliar with them, a pig pipe is usually made out of 4 inch PVC pipe with holes drilled in it and filled with corn. The hogs will roll the pipe around and the corn dribbles out, controlling the amount of corn they can eat in a short period of time. Jason offers up his tips, tricks and advice on what (not) to do when building a pig pipe.

ATN. Say the name and you’ll get a strong response. Sometimes it’s a glowing review by a happy customer and other times it’s a foul language from an unhappy customer. For 40 episodes of The Late Night Vision Show, we mentioned almost nothing about ATN. Never a scope review, never a recommendation, we basically acted as if they didn’t exist and this puzzled many people and generated many questions from listeners. Today, we break our silence and offer a full discussion, explanation and our opinions on the company. We are speaking from our own first hand personal experiences, both as users and a long time NV and thermal dealer and also from what we hear daily from ATN customers that we speak to.

We want to be clear, these are our opinions and our opinions only. If you own an ATN product and love it, that’s great! We are not here to bash anyone else’s products, nor are we here to intentionally run ATN down. We want to see the customer service issues changed and if the company solves these problems we will absolutely reconsider our opinions. We want good, quality competition in this market. So listen up and if you have first hand experience, let us know if you agree or disagree.

This whole industry and the modern sport of night hunting is what is today because of the traditional image intensification night vision scopes that were so popular in years past. Jason talks about their current status is and what the future looks like for these types of scopes.

Episode 28 is live and this week Hans and Jason are back with another handheld review. This week they are changing gears and reviewing a high end thermal handheld optic called the Atlas that’s made by a company named N-Vision. The Atlas is a biocular unit, meaning it has one objective lens but two eyepieces, like a binoculars do. Many states, especially in the South have large hog and deer populations. Every Fall on deer leases and managed clubs many night time hog hunters are asked to stop hunting hogs so that they don’t scare off the deer. On this week’s episode of The Late Night Vision Show Hans and Jason debate the question of whether night time hog hunting scares off deer and if hog hunters should hang up the NV scopes until deer season is over.
