We’re lucky at BikeRadar to be able to try out tons of new gear, whether that be bike components or riding kit. This means we rarely need to buy our own kit, which is a lovely problem to have. However, we’re not immune to the occasional purchase – perhaps a well-loved bit of test kit that’s been returned, or something a colleague has been raving about catches our eyes. In this episode, senior technical editor Tom Marvin is joined by technical writers Luke Marshall and Nick Clark to discuss the kit and clothing they’ve spent their own money on – if they’ve dug into their pockets, it must be pretty good! Gravel race bikes and gravel bikepacking bikes are two very different things, so why do we still call both of them 'gravel bikes'? In between seeking out new tech and eating the finest fayre of his home nation, deputy editor Jack Luke enjoyed the track racing action at the 2023 World Championships in Glasgow.

Sunday found him watching the qualifications for the men’s elite individual pursuit, where Australia’s Conor Leahy put in a storming effort onboard an unreleased Factor track bike, seeding sixth ahead of the final event.

This led to some enthusiastic cheering from a group of Australians in the stands, and who should be in their midst but Paul Collins – the technical director for the Australian cycling team.

In this episode of the BikeRadar Podcast, we hear what Collins thinks could be behind Jumbo-Visma’s success at the 2023 Men’s Tour de France and the hottest trends in track tech today.

As ever, Simon has come out the other side of this testing with some more strongly held opinions – this time, it’s that ERG mode (an optional setting used by smart trainers to automatically adjust the resistance to match your cadence, to hold you at a prescribed power output during a workout) is overrated.

But why does he think that, and does anyone else agree? In this episode of the BikeRadar podcast, Simon sits down with Ashley Quinlan, BikeRadar’s senior technical editor, to explain how ERG mode can potentially affect your pedalling style, why this matters, and what you might consider doing instead.

In this episode of the BikeRadar Podcast, deputy editor Jack Luke sits down with former pro-cyclist-turned-presenter, Adam Blythe.

Blythe is famously unafraid to air his opinions on tech, notably singling out Aqua Blue Sport’s decision to race on 3T’s 1x-specific Strada bikes as a key reason for his former team’s downfall in 2018. Following the recent release of the new 3T Strada ICR – which is available in a 2x configuration – We asked Adam whether he thought 1x will ever offer a competitive advantage.

Blythe also comes from a generation where riders were able to customize bikes to suit their riding, and by extension, personalities. In the podcast, Blythe bemoans the homogeneity of the modern peloton and highlights who he thinks are today’s most stylish riders on and off the bike. Finally, we hear his personal view on the UCI tech rules today.

Blythe shares his thought on whether he thinks 1x will ever offer a competitive advantage, the homogeneous aesthetic of tech in the pro peloton today (and why he thinks that’s a bad thing), who he thinks is the most stylish rider on and off the bike, and his thoughts on UCI tech rules.

Shimano 105 saw an eagerly-awaited update in 2022. In came Di2 electronic shifting and 12-speeds (in a disc brake-only flavour to boot), while mechanical shifting 105 got left behind.

In this podcast, BikeRadar’s road tech maestros Simon von Bromley, Ashley Quinlan and Warren Rossiter delve into our latest four-way bike group test, which featured the previous-generation 105 R7020 groupset.

They discuss the continued merits of mechanical 105, why Shimano should consider updating 105 R7000/R7020 to bring it into 12-speed line with its new electronic sibling, and if mechanical 105 R7020 is still the bang-for-buck performance benchmark groupset you shouldn’t ignore.

In this episode of the BikeRadar podcast, digital writer Jack Evans explores what’s powering the popularity of electric bikes.

Jack asks Specialized Globe and Brompton why they’re investing in electric bike technology, while Emily Sinclair from cycling charity Sustrans and Selaine Saxby MP explain their support for ebikes.

Meanwhile, Saul Leiken from Specialized Globe makes the case for electric cargo bikes as an alternative to cars in towns and cities. Brompton’s head of design, Will Carley Smith, says going electric was an easy decision for the brand, but incorporating an electric motor into a compact folding bike proved trickier.

Sustrans Cymru liveable cities and towns officer Emily Sinclair tells Jack about a Welsh government-funded scheme that loans electric bikes to people for free.

Conservative MP for North Devon Selaine Saxby is a keen ebike user. She says the All Party Parliamentary Group for Cycling and Walking, which she co-chairs, advocates more financial support for people to buy electric bikes.

Canyon has released a steering stabilisation system for the Spectral 29. This discreet system, which sits inside the top tube, provides a self-centring effect on the handlebars. Canyon claims this adds control and stability to calm the handling when things are getting rough at high speeds, or when you’re tackling slow-paced technical sections of trail, improving, the brand says, the connection between your front and rear wheels.

In this episode of the BikeRadar Podcast, technical editor in chief, Robin Weaver – who was among the first riders in the world to test the production version of the system – is grilled by technical editor Alex Evans to learn how the system works and whether its claimed benefits stack up in the real world.

Seb dives deep into how, why and where suspension tuning works with Jake Ireland of Sprung Suspension.

Suspension tuning can seems like a dark art. But what exactly can a tuning company do to improve your (already very sophisticated) mountain bike suspension? And if what they do is so good, why don't the shocks and forks they work on come with these modifications from the factory? Do Fox and RockShox not know what they're doing? Of course, there's a lot more to it than that.

We sit down with Jake from Sprung suspension, a local tuning workshop, who candidly dives into what they do and why.

Apologies for the background noise - we recorded this podcast in a busy workshop.

Tom and Seb go through the price ranges, and discuss what you can get, what to expect and the pros and cons of spending a little, or a lot, on your next mountain bike – with a few recommendations chucked in along the way.

While not entirely new, the current COVID-19 situation has lead to mass cancellation of ‘real’ bike races, and much more prominence of cycling in the e-sport arena. Can it be a genuine replacement for the classic races we all love to watch, or is it merely a way to keep the pros’ legs spinning and a little bit of money flowing in to teams’ pockets.

Our trio of roadie-fan boys, Jack, Simon and Matthew have been tuning in, so perhaps you don’t have to.

Lighter bikes are faster up hills - that's pretty much a fact. And, when the goal is to get to the top of the hill as fast as humanly possible - i.e. during a hill climb race - getting a bike as light as possible is vital. Joe and Jack, from the BikeRadar team are aficionados of the hill climb bike - over the years they've competed nationally at hill climbs, with their bikes weighing around the 5kg mark. So, how did they get their bikes quite so light? In this Tech Talk, the guys go through the different components on a bike, discussing where's best, and where not to try and lose some weight.

While Tom advocates for slightly 'smaller' bikes, Seb is definitely a fan of the super long and slack.
