During one of the Jewish festivals, the Lord Jesus meets a man who had been paralyzed for 38 years. Gathered with other invalids at the Pool of Bethesda, he hoped to be healed. When Jesus found him and realized he had been a long time in that condition, He asked him a question that carried many implications. Did the man really want to be made whole? The story has an interesting turn of events. We aren't told whether the man ever followed Jesus or not.

We come to the conclusion of Stephen's long speech in Acts. Instead of cries of repentance, the crowd cries for Stephen to be stoned. The angry mob is contrasted with Stephen, who is a picture of serenity. He is filled with the Holy Spirit. He sees a vision of the glorified Christ at the right hand of God. In death, he calls upon Jesus to receive his spirit and prays for the forgiveness of his murderers. There are many parallels between Stephen and Jesus Christ.

We continue in our study of Stephen's speech before the Sanhedrin. He takes them back in history to the Tabernacle in the Wilderness. God met with His people in that portable structure in the days of Moses and the Judges. Finally, David had a desire to build a permanent house for God. His son, Solomon would build the Temple of the Lord. But even he knew that God's glory could not be contained in that structure. Now God has His people for His temple. The Spirit of God permanently indwells every believer in Christ! Stephen ends with a judgment on the crowd that was resisting the Holy Spirit.

As we celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, an inventory is in order. In today's message we look at the history of our nation and the Founding Fathers. We also discuss the present rebellion against God which has brought about His wrath of abandonment. Finally, we look at the future. What can we expect as a nation if things continue as they are?

We continue studying Stephen's speech to the Sanhedrin. He has been accused of blaspheming God and Moses. In his defense, Stephen shows that it is the nation of Israel who has consistently rejected Moses and the Law. Even from their infancy as a nation, they fashioned a golden calf while Moses was receiving the Law. Eventually they graduated from the golden calf to worshipping the host of heaven. This resulted ultimately in the Babylonian captivity.

In this message, Pastor Ross encouraged the congregation by reminding them of God's promises. Dads (and all believers) can count on the "Promise of God's Presence", the "Promise of God's Precepts", the "Promise of God's Provision", and the "Promise of Prayer." Listen and be encouraged!

Stephen's speech is the longest recorded sermon in the book of Acts. As he stands before the Sanhedrin, he provides them with a history lesson. Beginning with Abraham and the patriarchs, he shows how God's activity was never limited to Israel or the Temple. They also have a pattern of rejecting their deliverers the first time. The patriarchs were moved with envy and rejected Joseph. Joseph is seen as a type of Christ.

An immediate crisis results in the Apostles needing some assistance. They appoint seven men to oversee the task of the daily food ministry to the saints. One of those men is Stephen, who is also the first martyr of the church. What we soon discover, is this man's ministry is not limited to his office of "waiting tables." He is a man full of faith, power, wisdom, and the Holy Spirit. He ministers in the synagogue and preaches Christ. Those in opposition are unable to defeat him in debate, so they bring false accusations before the Sanhedrin.

As we recognized the high school and college graduates this year, our pastor gave a charge to them and to the rest of the congregation. Moses' life neatly divides into three forty-year segments. We are more familiar with the first forty years and the last forty. But in this message, we will look at the forty years Moses spent in Midian. It seemed like all hope was lost, but God was still on the move. He was developing Moses' character and preparing him for his destiny as the deliverer.

At the conclusion of the Bread of Life sermon, some of Jesus' disciples are offended and decide no longer to follow Him. This teaches us that not all followers (or "disciples") of Christ are true believers. The Lord then looked at the Twelve and asked if they would abandon as well. Peter gives a statement as spokesman for the group, but we soon learn he is not 100 percent accurate in his assessment.

As Jesus continues the "Bread of Life" discourse, He resorts to the metaphorical language almost exclusively. He has plainly told them that He is the Bread of Life and the way that Bread is appropriated is by coming to Him and believing on Him. Now, He will tell them they must eat His flesh and drink His blood to have eternal life. Clearly, He was not advocating cannibalism. He was indicating, however, that His sacrificial death will be necessary to atone for their sins. They may not have understood the metaphor clearly, but they understood enough to find the message hard to stomach! Not much has changed! The world still sees the message of the Cross as offensive and unpalatable.

The Lord reveals to the crowd that He "came down from Heaven." The Jews are convinced that they know His origin, and that He is merely the "son of Joseph." We who have read the Gospel know that He is the eternal Word that has come down from Heaven and was made flesh (John 1:14). This Word is the only begotten Son of the Father! In an ironic twist, the crowd murmurs just as their ancestors did concerning the manna in the wilderness. Christ does not attempt to answer their criticism because He knows that no one can come to Christ unless the Father has drawn that individual.

After the feeding of the five thousand men, the crowds come seeking Jesus. He recognized they were not seeking for the right reasons. He took the opportunity to teach them the spiritual truths behind the miracle of the loaves and the fishes. Here, we find one of the seven great "I AM" passages in the gospel of John. We are forced to deal with two seemingly contradictory truths...Divine sovereignty and human free will. The text does not resolve the tension between the two parallel truths. The Father gives believers to the Son. But believers must come and believe in order to be saved!

Paul instructs the Corinthians on the proper conduct and attitude when partaking of the Lord's Supper. They were coming together, but their meetings were producing more bad than good. The division taking place between the "haves" and the "have nots" was ruining their "love feasts." Paul goes on to say that we should all examine ourselves before coming to the Lord's table. Failure to do so, will invite Divine chastisement.

In contrast with our message about Judas, we take a look at Peter's denial of Christ. It is recorded in all four gospels. Peter was filled with pride and presumption, and it led to his temporary demise. But Peter came back from his epic failure to lead the Apostles and the early church. What made the difference for Peter? We will look at the reason for Peter's restoration in this message. Hopefully this will be an encouragement to anyone who has failed the Lord at any given time. Haven't we all been guilty of that at some point? Thankfully, failure for the true believer is never final!

We take a look at the life of Judas as recorded in the Gospel records. Is he an example of a believer who lost his salvation? Could there be another explanation? We will explore this tragic figure and hope to learn from his example. What a shame that he was so close to Jesus, yet so far from salvation! This is a dire warning for all who look at religious activity as assurance of salvation. (NOTE: The audio doesn't begin until around the 11 minute mark)

In today's message we will look at the six trials that Jesus endured, before going to the Cross. He would face three religious trials from the Jews (Annas, Caiaphas, the Sanhedrin). They would pronounce Him guilty without any evidence or a fair trial. The final three trials were by Pilate, Herod Antipas, and Pilate for the second time. Pilate boldly declared "I find no fault in Him." Jesus Christ endured those illegal trials so that you and I could be reconciled to God. Before He was ever crucified, He had suffered unimaginable cruelty and pain. May we never forget the sufferings of Christ...or the glory to follow!

Paul is forced to defend his integrity against the (so-called) "super apostles" that had corrupted the Corinthian church. He warns against those who preach "another Jesus" and "another gospel." The same danger holds true today. Make sure you have believed in the Jesus of the Bible! Satan does not come showing his true colors. Instead, he masquerades as an angel of light. It is not surprising that his "ministers" have adopted the same approach. Jesus warned His followers, "take heed that no man deceives you."

He then hosts a feast for Jesus Christ and his fellow tax collectors. The Pharisees were outraged that the Master would eat with such outcasts. The Apostle Paul writes to the Corinthians concerning giving. He has been collecting an offering for the poor saints in Jerusalem. The Corinthians had pledged to give to the offering. This stirred the Macedonians to participate in the offering as well. Despite their extreme trials and poverty, they pleaded with Paul for the chance to participate in this ministry. Paul does not appeal to any Old Testament command or percentage for required giving. The key word in this passage is "grace." The ultimate example of "grace giving" is the Lord Jesus Christ. He left the splendor of Heaven and became a man so that one day we can share in His glory! (Rom 8:17)

In today's message we look at the oldest Psalm in the Bible; Psalm 90. We know it's the oldest because it was written by Moses. At the end of the wilderness wanderings, Moses prepares the new generation to enter the Land of Canaan. Most of the Exodus generation passed away due to the sin at Kadesh-Barnea. Joshua's generation needed to be reminded of God's covenant faithfulness and exhorted to "number their days."

When many people come to the genealogies in the Bible, they treat them like "flyover states" on an airplane. They would rather skip to the "good stuff." But tucked away in these genealogical records are great theological truths. Such is the case with Matthew's opening to his Gospel. There, you will find unlikely candidates of God's grace. That's good news for us because we need it too!

Nearly 700 years before the birth of Christ, the prophet Isaiah was sent to King Ahaz. Ahaz was afraid because of the threat of rivals in Syria and the Northern Kingdom. God had promised King David that his house would endure and that the Messiah would sit on his throne (2 Sam 7:12-16). If Ahaz had believed this, his heart would not have been troubled. God offered Ahaz a sign, which he refused. In response, the LORD promised to give a sign of His own doing! A virgin would conceive, and the child would be called "Immanuel" which means "God with us."

John's gospel is unique. He presents Jesus Christ as the eternal Son of God who created the universe. John records the seven "I AM" statements of Christ. The beginning of John's Gospel is very similar to the opening of the Bible in Genesis. He then goes on to say that the eternal Word became flesh and dwelt among us. He describes the glory of Jesus Christ and describes Him as being "full of grace and truth."

The Corinthians had a serious case of sexual immorality going on in their local assembly. Rather than mourning over the sin and disciplining the offender, they were "puffed up." Paul instructs them to hand the man over to Satan for the destruction of his flesh. The end goal, however, is the salvation of the man's spirit. Paul's hope is that this would drive the man to repentance and restoration. Paul then reminds them of who they are in Christ. Just as they had been redeemed by the Passover Lamb (Jesus Christ) they are to get out the old "leaven." Finally, he exhorts them not to fellowship with professing believers who sin rebelliously.

Paul is continuing to correct the improper view the Corinthians had of their favorite preachers. He has used the analogy of a farmer and a builder. Now, he will use the illustration of a galley slave oarsman and a household manager. He admonishes them to stop judging and wait until the Day when the Lord will reveal every man's work and motive. Paul warns that he will come to visit them soon and it is up to them how that visit will go. Shall he come in gentleness, or with the rod of correction?

Despite their inflated evaluation of themselves, Paul calls the Corinthian believers spiritual babies. Their immaturity was displayed by their behavior. They were puffed up for one preacher over another. Paul reminds them that he and Apollos (and us, by extension) are merely seed-throwers and water boys. God deserves the glory, for He makes all things grow. This chapter closes by reminding them that in Christ, all things belong to the Corinthians- even victory over death!

In this message, Paul contrasts the wisdom of this age and the rulers of this age with the wisdom from God. God's wisdom is found in a mystery. But this mystery has been revealed to those who have the Holy Spirit. The "natural man" (the person without the Holy Spirit) cannot understand or grasp the spiritual truths of God's word. But the believer is capable of understanding and knowing God's word because he/she has the mind of Christ.

After Paul's greeting that reminds them of their position in Christ, he begins to deal with some of the problems in the Corinthian church. First on the list, is the issue of division! Paul urges them on the basis of their familial bonds in Christ to be of the same mind and speech. Unity does not demand uniformity, but quarrels and factions hinder the cause of Christ. Paul reminds them that Jesus Christ is the Lord of the church and that their priority should be the proclamation of the Gospel!

In Paul's greeting to the church at Corinth, we learn some valuable theological lessons. This church is dealing with a myriad of issues. Paul is going to correct and rebuke the sinful behaviors at this church. But before he does, he takes a moment to remind them of their position and high calling in the Lord Jesus Christ. By virtue of their faith in Christ, they are no longer what they once were. They are now saints! Obviously, this speaks of their position and not their practice. But Paul is careful to keep justification and sanctification issues separate, and we must as well! Are you a saint or an "ain't"? There "ain't" no in-between!

Their ruling is that the Gentiles do not have to be circumcised, nor did they need to keep the Law of Moses. They were given four decrees that foster good relations between the believing Jews and Gentiles.

Anti-Semitism is the irrational hatred of the physical descendants of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. We have seen it throughout history and even today. The devil has a particular hatred for the nation of Israel and the Jewish people.

Paul explains the mystery of Israel's partial hardening. A mystery is something not revealed in the Old Testament. Paul explains that this partial hardening is only temporary. It will be over once the full number of the Gentiles comes into the fold. Once that happens, God's program will once again focus on the nation of Israel.

View Details

Paul answers two important questions regarding the nation of Israel. Has God cast off His people that He foreknew? Secondly, has the nation fallen out of favor permanently? Paul's answer to both questions is "God forbid!" The hardening of Israel is only partial. There has always been a remnant of faithful Jewish believers. It is the same today. The hardening is only partial, and it isn't permanent.

In our previous message, we looked at Israel's past election. Today, we look at Israel's present rejection. What we will learn is that their rejection is based on their refusal to submit to the righteousness of God. Rather than coming by faith, they sought to approach God by works of the law. They stumbled over the Chief Corner Stone (Jesus Christ). Divine sovereignty and human responsibility are not mutually exclusive. The Bible teaches both, and Romans 9 & 10 are perfect examples of how these are both true.

We continue in our series "Why Israel Matters." In light of the fact that most of the nation of Israel has rejected the Gospel, what are we to conclude? Have God's promises to His covenant people failed? Can we trust that the promises of Romans 8 will come to fruition? Paul will argue primarily from the Old Testament, that God has always had a remnant people. It has never been the entire nation of Israel that has been in faith. There are some difficult concepts in Romans 9 and Paul does a great job of answering anticipated objections!

In this first installment of the series "Why Israel Matters", we look at the eight covenants of the Bible. In particular, we look at the Abrahamic Covenant. In that covenant, the LORD promised Abraham several things: a great nation (Israel), blessings (material/spiritual), a great name, the obligation to be a blessing, that He would bless those that bless Israel, He would curse those that curse Israel, and that all of the families of the earth would receive a blessing. The last promise sees its fulfilment in the Messiah (Gal 3:8). With that being said, it doesn't negate the other aspects of the Abrahamic covenant. And as we shall see that covenant was unilateral, unconditional, and eternal!

In today's message, we look at Paul's very sharp language to the churches in the Galatian region. He has a dire warning for any who would try to alter God's message of salvation. The Gospel of Jesus Christ is unique in that it is the only "religion" (for lack of a better word) that offers salvation independent of any human effort. This amazing grace is the unmerited favor of God. It is dispensed to all who would accept by faith that Jesus died for their sins and rose again! Have you made that decision yet? Woe to any who would attempt to pervert or distort the message in any way. Paul says they are to be accursed ("anathema" in Greek)!!!

As Paul closes the 8th chapter of Romans, the text hits a crescendo! Paul asks a series of questions about persons, places, or things, that might separate us from the love of God. The chapter begins with "no condemnation"...and it ends with "no separation."
