Honest talk from a 1971-born Scotsman who got sober in 2005 and quit opioids in 2017. No holds barred - philosophy, spirituality, addiction, recovery, mental health, pressures of life, gratitude — these are all parts of my life that I talk about at length.
I was installed as the Master of Lodge St Molios No 774 on 14 October 2023. In my toast to my Installing Masters, I talked about the similarities I’ve always felt exist between Freemasonry and Alcoholics Anonymous.
I recorded my toast on my iPhone and am publishing the first part of it here, in which I talk about the similarities between the two organisations.
It’s a topic I’m very keen to go into more deeply and perhaps even develop into a formal talk. If that’s something that you’d be interested in, please let me know. I need all the encouragement I can get to push through the fear!

Note: Sorry if you get this twice. I’m still figuring out Substack’s podcast hosting implementation.
I'm talking through a bit of a meltdown I had the night before and the epiphany that it led to the next morning as I wrote my Morning Pages. I hope that my vulnerable honesty comes through as an example to others of how I'm working to improve myself. I'm well aware of Brené Brown's dichotomy of vulnerability and oversharing, and I know that I straddle that line with a lot of what I make. In fact, I probably go into oversharing territory quite often, but it really does help me to figure things out, and I hope that it can help others too; just like how I felt seen after watching some of Dodie's content and I went on to become rather a big fan of her music after that!

I'm off to a good start today. My cold is a bit better, the sun is shining, I recorded a video podcast when I was out with Clover and I got to do my writing on the porch. I examined some behaviour yesterday of which I'm not proud. I can do better. I will do better.
I put some Jacques Herbin Rouge Hematite ink into my TWSBI Diamond 580 this morning to see how it would look on the Cosmo Air Light paper and I'm quite pleased with how it came out. And I like how the red ink looks in the purple pen too. Nice combo. Maybe I'll commit and fill it right up, lol.

This is day two with my Pebble Stationery Co. A5 notebook with Cosmo Air Light paper. I'm very happy with it indeed! I wrote with the Edelfeder and Diamine Bilberry yesterday and the Pelikan M400 with Fuyu-gaki today. There was no bleed, no feathering and, best of all, no squeaking with the Pilot!

I don't suppose every day's writing can be great, or even good. Today's one of those days. But showing up consistently is my goal, and I achieved that. I'm feeling good and positive and ready for a productive week next week.
I did do my weekly review after writing this morning and it's really helping me a lot to keep that Notion system going. I've been using it for three years now, and it changed everything. The system was designed by August Bradley and his third cohort starts next week. If you'd like to take a look, head over here. One day I might get an affiliate code! I talked to Lorraine about the swimming membership and we both think that we can’t afford it right now and I should instead be getting up the Hill of Beans because it’s free. It makes me sad, but it’s probably the right decision for the time being. We’re still paying off the overdraft and have used the credit cards to get the kids’ Christmas presents. Not the best position to be thinking about a swimming membership really. 😥

Signing up for a paid subscription to this newsletter would be absolutely amazing, too. While I write it primarily for myself, I'd probably not keep going with it if I weren't publishing it. It's a weird circular thing.

Whether you're for or against the 12-step program of Alcoholics Anonymous, there can be no doubt that, for some, it works. I'm one of those people for whom it works ... so far. It did what I needed it to do - gave me a blueprint for not picking up a drink for a day at a time. Those days have now added up to more than 16 years, for the first 10 of which I was a regular AA attender. These are some rambly thoughts that were inspired by an interesting tweet thread I read that was started by Curtis Evans. See the link below to the original tweet. Links Tweets from Curtis Evans (https://twitter.com/EvansWefixbikes/status/1481782831349178370?s=20) The Real AA: Behind the Myth of 12-Step Recovery, by Ken Ragge (https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1204330.The_Real_AA) Dopesick (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9174558/) The Artist's Way, by Julia Cameron (https://geni.us/bA2Pw) As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

Watch the video of this episode here: https://youtu.be/ZwSKAQksM Step 3 in Alcoholics Anonymous is the first time in the 12 steps that God is mentioned. For that reason, it's sometimes seen as being a tricky step to take newcomers through. It doesn't need to be complicated though. It's not religious, it's not ideological, it's not dogmatic. It's just deciding to acknowledge that you're not in control, which you already kinda know anyway, right? "But if only it weren't for ..." Yeah, that! That's what needs to go, and that's the bit that's really hard in day-to-day recovery. But non-addicts don't think about this stuff as much as we in recovery do. Thats' where the 'grateful' alcoholic comes from. We can change the world by changing ourselves, by simply making that decision. That got kinda preachy, didn't it? You see? Step 3 can be hard! Watch the video and hopefully, it'll help you to understand that it can be as easy as pie, and who doesn't like pie? AA runs on coffee. I watched the Beastie Boys Story and it really resonated with me in a big way. I've been a fan of theirs since the beginning and it feels like we kinda grew up together. It got me thinking about creativity and wondering how I and my pals never got it together to make stuff. All the parts where there. I guess we just didn't have our Adam Yauch. I feel like I could've filled that role in some ways. Oh well. The past, eh? This is the episode I recorded on the morning I got sick. By the afternoon, I was in bed. So that explains why I was feeling so crap when I recorded it!
I wasn't gonna put this one out, but on listening back it didn't sound quite as negative as I remembered its being, and I'm all about not hiding anyway, so here it is for your enjoyment. Audio only this time.

This is a general chat about my day in the freelance world. I spent five hours in Crofters' on meetings and recording and then walked the dogs in silence. That was productive. I saw Joker at the mobile cinema on Arran. It was a spur-of-the-moment decision and it got me thinking about taking breaks and how important it is to consume content for its own sake. John Spencer, who played Leo McGarry in The West Wing, gave some lovely feedback to Teri Polo, who played Helen Santos, and it had me tearing up to hear that on the West Wing Weekly podast. Again, that shows the importance simply of unplugging from the business hustle and taking in some soul food. ★ Support this podcast on Patreon ★

Recorded on the last trading day of my business, 28 October 2019.
I started at the post office on 30 January 2008 so served for just under 12 years. I look forward to the rose-tinted glasses of nostalgia when the pain of the forthcoming week and of 12 years' working with Post Office Ltd as my lords and masters subsides and I remember the good bits, mainly the many customers I've had the pleasure of serving and not the deterioration of my mental health as POL slowly drove me to despair.
Let the healing commence.

I nearly didn't post this one. It's a bit raw and came on a day when my future felt like it was in the balance and my mental state was at its lowest. I think talking it through helped my head a lot, as did my AA meeting on the following day. It's a little bit out of sequence in terms of chronology - it was recorded on 15 October, so a week before my birthday. I dunno, have a listen and see what you think. It did all work out in the end and I dealt with it all pretty well I think. Cool head in a crisis. Ha ha.

I talk a bit here about the difficult week I had this week with the post office transfer, but I suppose it's to expected that there are going to be some hurdles transferring a business after 12 years. Still, it's rather stressful. So much so in fact that I had to go to a computer shop for some retail therapy - my favourite shop of course, Kustom PCs in Ayr. So now I have a brand new Ducky keyboard with Cherry Silent Red switches. It's gorgeous!

It's going to take a lot more tweaking till I get the balance right, but I do know that I have to gather in the content while it's there. Opportunities may be fewer for that during the winter months, so I just have to do the best I can right now and take a huge dose of acceptance, lest my mental health starts to suffer from being overwhelmed.

I ponied up for the subscription to OmniFocus as my project management app. I used it back in the v1 days and loved it. I'm not sure why I stopped really; I guess my life became manageable and predictable. That is no longer the case and I really do need an app to keep me on track. This is the perfect app for me. I talk about about why that is, in among my usual waffle.

Coming out of a low depressive spell and suffering from a headache, so I took the last of my Co-codamol 30mgs. It doesn't make for the most compelling of content, but I figured I'd publish it anyway so I'm publishing my thoughts when I'm in all moods and states of health. If you stick through this one, thanks, but no worries if you don't.

Local author Alison Page is organising a children's book festival for September 2020. I went along to their committee meeting to see how I could help.

One of the biggest challenges in becoming a freelance content creator is time management. To that end I'm trying out a couple of apps, including the mighty OmniFocus. That's probably what I'll stick with.

Another day up the hill with the dogs, then home to prepare for going out to film Scott Nicol in Crofters.
I talk a bit about Trello, an app I'm looking at for productivity. The jury's still out. OmniFocus still might be the app I turn to, but it's not free. I need to start thinking about business in terms of income and expenses. A business plan maybe? Say it ain't so! But yeah, pretty much that.
A shout out to my Patron subscribers and an invitation to support me on that platform as I talk about the changing landscape in my life right now.
There's a think line between optimism and delusion - I hope I'm on the right side of that line!

This is quite a good one, perhaps unsurprisingly so as I'm out in the fresh air up the hill in my favourite place. Running social media and building brand is hard. I ponder that here and wonder just where I'm going. There are more questions than there are conclusions, but that's the nature of the beast. Talking onto mic is really helping me to figure things out.

I spent some time making my YouTube thumbnails consistent on the Crofters' Music Bar channel using an app called Canva. It totally rocks. I use it for my business cards too.

I went to Glasgow in the morning with Freya for her induction into the RCS Juniors and had a lovely trip. Whilst there, I got a call from tonight's act at Crofters' asking if I'd fill in for him because the ferry service was pure dodgeball and he needed to be back on the mainland earlyish on Sunday. So I said I would, making it a double dunter for the Camser! First time I've had that in a while, although it used to happen quite a lot when I played in two bands. So there's some Glasgow action in this one, followed by chat on the way to and from the gig. Featuring Lucy, she of the Prodigy request - that girl's a riot!, and my old pal Dafydd as I gave him a lift home from the pub. This was a fun one.
