There is an old Cherokee legend of a Chief and his grandson. The Chief tells a story of two wolves fighting inside each of us: a bad wolf full of fear, anger, and greed, and a good wolf full of courage, compassion, and caring.
When the Chief finished the story, the grandson asked him which wolf wins. The Chief's answer...the one you feed.
The Purpose of Good Wolf Radio is to help you feed your Good Wolf. To help you search for and bring to light those old beliefs, habits, and mindsets that are keeping you from becoming your best self. And to help you seek out and integrate those new, empowering beliefs, habits, and mindsets that can move you toward greatness.
While there is no restriction on the topics we might cover during our time together, some of our main themes will revolve around optimizing physical health, improving overall fitness, getting proper recovery, nourishing the body, and building a growth mindset in regard to what we believe is possible for ourselves.
Thank you for joining the Good Wolf Community. Here's to taking your first (100th) step toward becoming your best self possible.

We spend a lot of time being concerned about what other people think and, in turn, making decisions to make those other people happy. Which is ironic because those other people don’t have to live with the consequences of your decisions.
Today, I want to talk about defining what success looks like to YOU. This will require you to put aside the beliefs and opinions of others around you so you can create the life you want for yourself. But, at the end of the day, if you’ve spent your life pursuing your own definition of success, you’ll have fewer regrets on your death bed.
Here’s what we talk about…
· Why it’s important to set your own definition of success…
· How you can start to ignore the opinions of those around you…
· Why YOU are also the biggest obstacle you’ll face along the way…
· The 3 questions you need to ask when clarifying what success looks like to you…

There’s a temptation on every journey to take the shortcut to the outcome. Whether you’re trying to lose weight or build a multi-million dollar business or advance your career, you’ll have times when you want to try something that gets you there faster.
The problem is, when you choose strategies that promise instant results, you almost always end up in a worse spot than when you started. That’s why taking time to choose the rational path is important so you don’t spiral backwards unnecessarily.
Today, we’ll talk about the difference between possibility and probability as it pertains to getting better results. Knowing and understanding the difference between these two ideas can mean the difference between success and failure.
Here’s what we talk about…
· Why most people choose instant gratification to get results…
· The importance of paying the full price for your outcomes…
· Understanding the high probability of becoming a millionaire…

Today’s conversation is with Mimosa Jones Tunney. Mimosa, founder & president of the American Emergent Curriculum (AEC) and The School House, is a former political speech and Hollywood television writer, seasoned entrepreneur, and avid philanthropist who has left an indelible mark on both the entertainment and education sectors. Her early successes in television, penning scripts for Oprah and HBO, and collaborating with industry giants like Aaron Sorkin, eventually led her down the path of researching American education for a project.
Delving into the forgotten collaboration between S.S. McClure and Dr. Maria Montessori to reform American education, Tunney recognized the education system had been untouched for nearly 100 years and there was a dire need for innovation.
Drawing from her background in policy, Mimosa Jones Tunney set out to revolutionize education by founding and developing the American Emergent Curriculum (AEC), groundbreaking curriculum leveraging the science of human learning through proven pedagogical research. The curriculum has been implemented through a NY-based brick-and-mortar school called The School House and an online program called, TSH Anywhere, which has shown to successfully resolve all the current education system’s issues.

The best way to grow yourself as a person is through physical challenges. Exercise, of course, is a great avenue for personal growth. But pushing yourself to complete something that brings you to your physical limits is where real growth happens. This past weekend, I completed my 4th Tough Mudder, which is one of those types of events that will help you grow and expand exponentially.
Today, I want to talk about 5 lessons that I learned specifically about success and winning by completing my 4th Tough Mudder. Because all physical challenges offer lessons that we can take and transfer to life.
Here’s what we talk about…
· Why winning is subjective and not objective…
· How you can start to define winning yourself…
· Why you can not and will not succeed on your own…
· The best way to achieve the highest level of success in your life…

Many people struggle to make progress in life and can’t seem to figure out why…so they say. A big reason, and a major factor in the success or failure of a goal, is not understanding second and third order consequences. These consequences, the one’s that come AFTER you’ve made the decision or taken the action, are tricky to recognize because there isn’t a direct line of connection to the original decision.
But, if you understand that all of the decisions you’ve made up until now have led you to this point in life, and that all the decisions you’ll make moving forward will dictate the remainder of your existence, then you can appreciate that all decisions have downstream consequences that are worth paying attention to
Here’s what we talk about…
· What are 2nd and 3rd order consequences and why they matter…
· Why most people fail at dieting and exercising…
· Why you should ignore political issues like abortion…
· How to start making better decisions by thinking through the consequences…

Today’s conversation is with Furkhan Dandia. Furkhan’s focus is on working with people to address childhood incidents and trauma. Childhood experiences shape our behaviors, patterns and beliefs, ultimately influencing our perspectives of the world, relationships and how we view ourselves. Often these behaviors, patterns and beliefs are manifested subconsciously, and we are unaware of our role in shaping our lives.
The narrative then becomes that life is happening to us. I aim to help people become more aware of these subconscious actions and dive deeper into the source of these behaviors, patterns and beliefs. We can all live purposefully and work toward our best selves once we have healed the past.
Here’s what we talk about…
· Why Furkhan transitioned from engineering to therapy and psychology…

As you transition out of adolescents and into adulthood, life begins by establishing your SELF. You’re establishing your career, your family, your reputation. This is what David Brooks calls the first mountain. Eventually, discontent sets in and you realize that there’s something more to life. You realize that there is more beyond the SELF.
If you follow this realization to its end, you’ll find that helping OTHERS is what will bring you purpose and fulfillment in life. This is what David Brooks calls the second mountain. Many people don’t make that transition from the first mountain to the second mountain and end up paying the price in the end. Today, we want to learn the lessons that those people didn’t learn so we don’t fall into that trap.
Because fulfillment and purpose are found when you go beyond your SELF and put your attention to helping OTHERS.
Here’s what we talk about…
· Why people who get stuck on the first mountain are sad and depressed…
· The difference between helping OTHERS and self-sacrifice…
· The story of Meriwhether Lewis and how his first mountain literally killed him…
· Why many Olympic and professional athletes lose at life after their career…

Today’s conversation is with Lawrence Dunning. Lawrence was born in England, holds a BA Degree in History and an MBA in Finance, from the University of Exeter. After an intense career spanning the derivative trading pits of Amsterdam, Wall Street, and owning his own company at the Chicago Board of Trade, he was a self-made millionaire before the age of thirty.
Realizing he had a very small window to pursue his love of the combat sports, Lawrence gave away his trading company and took a lengthy sabbatical. From his love of amateur boxing, after winning the Chicago Golden Gloves, he spent the next five years as a professional MMA fighter, and a jiu-jitsu competitor, earning his black belt in 2016.
At 35 years old, after being immersed in his athletic pursuits, and making every financial mistake there was, he saw his net worth evaporate. Lawrence then turned his focus on his professional reinvention in the real estate world. He is the founder of “The Dunning Team”, a real estate group based in Chicago, specializing in ground up developments and building investment portfolios for his clients.
Today, Lawrence continues to teach, train and compete in jiujitsu. He just completed his goal of being the first jiujitsu black belt to have run a marathon on all 7 continents (including Antartica). He hosts “Enter the Lionheart”, his podcast about excellence amongst entrepreneur, athletes and intellectuals. And recently published his book "The Forgotten Asset Class" on low risk, high reward,. One thing that humans are terrible at is gaining perspective. This is understandable considering we only have our own lens with which to view the world. But it’s a tendency that also leads us to hang onto problems longer than we need to and to make big problems out of small problems which adds unnecessary pain and misery to life.
So, learning to put things in perspective is a skill that you need to build if you’re going to achieve as much happiness in life that you can. The Jedi mind tricks we’ll talk about today are just a handful of the strategies you can implement to bring yourself back to earth when you feel yourself blowing things out of perspective, but they’re a great place to start.
Here’s what we talk about…
· Why humans blow things out perspective in the first place…
· How cognitive biases play a part in gaining perspective…
· What you can do to reframe your next obstacle…
· Learning to ask yourself “relative to what?”…

I spoke with Bo Bennett in a recent episode of the Good Wolf Project. Bo is an expert in rationality and cognitive reasoning. One of the topics we talked about during our conversation was cognitive bias. Bo defines a cognitive bias as a short cut for the brain, which is a great way to look at it. These shortcuts were built into our brains over 100s of thousands of years during a time when humans had plenty of existential threats to pay attention to.
The problem is, we don’t have any of these existential threats around any more. And yet, the cognitive shortcuts that were built in during that time in human history are still with us. So, while they serve as a useful tool to help simplify our world at times, they also distort our reality and make our lives a lot harder than they need to be. So, let’s figure out how we can start to overcome them and gain a new perspective on reality that supports our goals and dreams.

There’s a belief about success that, once I reach my goals and dreams, I’ll have all the confidence I need. We look at the achievement of the goal as the point in which we’ll start to believing in ourselves and when our self-doubt will melt away.
Of course, anybody who’s ever lost a significant amount of weight and subsequently put it back on knows that this isn’t the case. The achievement of your goal should only be used as reinforcement for your self-confidence and self-worth…it shouldn’t be used as the fuel.
Today, we’ll talk about where you focus needs to go if you want to build unshakeable self-confidence. Spoiler alert, it requires daily attention to detail as you morph yourself into a different person.

We find ourselves at a place in society where we’re relying too much on certain government programs and private industries. We rely on these things so much that we find ourselves giving up responsibility for our lives and gladly handing them over for someone else to take care of.
Take the healthcare industry, for example. Most of society has given up responsibility for their health and gladly handed it over to an industry that does not have their best interest at heart. Which is insanely dangerous because, if that industry ever decides to reject helping you (which it can and will do) then you find yourself not knowing how to take care of yourself.
And that is just one of many examples where we find ourselves over-privileged. We’ll talk about other industries of privilege and how we can start to take back our freedom by taking back our responsibility.

With the abundance of information available to us on the internet today, it can be easy to get confused about what works best and what you should stay away from. Today, I’ll whittle that information down for you and give you the 3 most effective things you can do for your personal development.
This list, of course, is not extensive. There will clearly be things that are missing. Things that most people would say should be on a list of “most effectives”. But I want to give you a different perspective on what’s effective and what’s not. And it all starts by understanding what “personal development” really means.

When we hear the word “discipline” we think about punishment. In grade school we were disciplined for being kids and getting “out of hand”. In high school and college we were told to be disciplined in our studies to get good grades and graduate with flying colors. And at our jobs we’re told we need to be discipline and follow the bosses directions. And, in this way, discipline was and is a punishment.
But the truth about discipline is much more than that. The act of being discipline is much more than following an arbitrary set of rules that our teachers had in school or doing as we’re told in our jobs. No, this type of discipline is control…it’s NOT discipline. And no one can control you but YOU.
And THAT is what discipline is all about. It’s about have the self-control to do the things you say you’re going to do. It’s about following through with your word. It’s about being the type of person that goes against the norm of instant gratification and comfort-seeking. Being discipline is about doing what needs to be done to become the person you know you can be. THAT is discipline. And that is what we’ll be covering during this next series.Today we get to hear from a good friend and current Army Lieutenant, Matt Wilson. Lt. Wilson has been the epitome of discipline over the course of his short 25 years on earth. From having discipline to be the best athlete in high school, to thriving at West Point as a D1 basketball player, to striving to be the best soldier he can be in the American Army, Lt. Wilson continues to persevere.

One of the biggest challenges that all humans face in life is overcoming the urge to quit. Some people overcome this urge better than others. But nobody is invincible to the thoughts of self-doubt. How do we push through those moments when we want to stop? How do we work through those thoughts and feelings of self-doubt and disbelief?
While these questions aren’t easily answered, we can start to make progress in small, effective ways by choosing to work on it every single day.

Over the years, we’ve bought into this idea of “all things in moderation”. The problem is, we’ve only applied the idea of moderation to the areas of life that empower us. For instance, people justify not working too much because they don’t want to “over due” it…in other words, they should exercise in moderation.
Of course, our idea of “moderate” exercise today is inadequate. Because our standards for exercise and movement are so low, that ANY exercise is moderate exercise. Which is why one of the main takeaways from this episode is the fact that, if you want to make any kind of lasting, sustainable change in your life, you need to do it in excess.

Stress is the one necessary component of growth that can’t be avoided. Whether you’re trying to get stronger, get smarter, or get richer, you’ll have to go through stressful events to make it happen. At the same time, not all stress is created equal. Of course, some types of stress are harmful and debilitating. And it’s those types of stress that cause mental issues in the mind and metabolic issues in the body.
Today, we break down the different types of stress we have in our lives so we can start to use stress correctly and instead of letting it use us.

How many times have you told yourself that you don’t have time to do something? If you’re like most people, that answer is A LOT. But why are some people able to make such drastic changes in their lives with the same 24 hours while others can’t seem make a hint of progress?
Part of it, of course, is because we all have didn’t circumstances to work with. Some of us have kids, others don’t. Some of us are in school and working part time, others are just in school. So circumstances play a big part of it. However, there are still plenty of examples of people who have overcome extenuating circumstances and achieved a high level of success.

Diets don’t work. I’m sure you’ve said that to yourself every time you’ve tried and failed on a diet. Considering the average person tries “dieting” around 20 times in their lifetime, statistics would seem to bear that out.
But we’re asking ourselves the wrong question when it comes to changing our diet. We’re asking “what diet is going to get me this quick result?” and other similar questions that make us choose something unsustainable. And there are many other areas of our mindset that keep us from making progress, from lacking willpower, to lacking motivation, and so on.
Those are the questions we tackle today, based primarily around an interview that Chris Williamson did with author Johann Hari regarding why so many people are jumping on the semaglutide train and why previous efforts to change haven’t worked.

Courage isn’t something you have. Courage is something you do. But it’s not something you just do for really big obstacles or threats. It’s something you do moment-to-moment and day-to-day. Today, we talk about the science of courage. Courage is just a habit you build over time. But in order to build it, you have to DO IT. Here’s what we discuss…

There’s a trend in society today that’s leaving everyone looking for someone to make a change. We want things to be “the way the used to be” and ask “why won’t someone do something about it?” Of course, what we miss in our pleading for help is the fact that WE are part of the problem.
Yes, each one of us that complains about the trends in society and culture is part of the problem because WE ARE PART of society and culture. And being part of society, that means we also have the power to make a change. We have the power to leave an impact on the world and have a ripple effect on those around us.
The question is, are you up for the challenge?

Any time you decide to start something new, you’re guaranteed to run into obstacles. Most of the obstacles we face have to do a lack of resources. I call this the resource deficit. Everyone who has ever started something has to deal with a resource deficit at some level. Maybe they don’t have much time or don’t have much money or don’t have the right people.
No matter the deficit, there’s one…and only one…difference between people who achieve their goals and people who don’t: people who achieve their goals overcome the resource deficit and people have don’t achieve their goals…well…don’t. And the underlying factor that allows goal-achievers to keep pushing forward is not because they’re special or more talented…it’s their mindset.
So how can we start to overcome these resource deficits and shift our mindset so that we can achieve the goals we want and change our lives in the process?

“Our expectations are like the air we breathe – they accompany us everywhere, yet we are rarely conscious of their presence.” This is the first sentence in the introduction to the book, The Expectation Effect, by David Robson. As you can tell by the excerpt, and the title, the book is all about your expectations. If you don’t think about your expectations often, this book will change your mind very quickly and jolt into action as David challenges your thinking about what to expect out of life.In this episode I talk with the author of the Expectation Effect, David Robson. There are very few guarantees on your journey to your goal. One sure guarantee is that you’ll get frustrated…you’ll get frustrated A LOT! Or, put a different way, you’ll unlimited opportunities to be frustrated. And your ability to push through those “opportunities” and keep going will dictate whether or not you achieve your goal.
That ability, pushing through the opportunities to be frustrated, is known as your frustration tolerance. In other words, how tolerant are you to small things that come your way and how quickly do you get frustrated because of them.
If you can shift your frustration tolerance so that you are MORE tolerant of potentially frustrating circumstances, you’ll increase your likelihood of achieving your goal.

Effort is the thing that will define your success…hands down. Most people don’t understand the amount of effort that is needed to make success happen. We’re told that losing weight should be easy, that making money is no problem, and that getting a six pack only takes about 6 minutes a day. Well, that’s all a lie. It all takes effort. And much more effort than you know. That’s what Bob and I talk about during this episode. Bob Schneider, who has been on the podcast previously talking problem solving, is a beacon of effort. He puts effort into lifting heavy weights, he puts effort into building his business, and now he’s putting effort into getting into the best shape of his life.

One of the age-old myths of ageing is that getting older equals getting frail and decrepit. Millions of people have fallen for the myth, leading them to lead unhappy, unhealthy lives in their later years. Every day millions of people start new ventures, new diets, new exercise programs, and new projects, and, about 6 weeks later, 99% of those same people are slowing down, giving up, and quitting their hopes and dreams. But 1% of them make it through and see their journey through to the end (if there ever is an end). So what’s the difference? Why do the VAST majority of people quit on their dreams while a very small minority succeed and win?
Is it because that 1% are special in some way?
Is it because they have more money?
Is it because they have a secret power?
In most cases, the answer to these questions in most assuredly NO. There are plenty of “dumb” people who start businesses and become multi-millionaires. There are plenty of poot people who become financially free. And, conversely, there are plenty of people with what would seem like an intellectual superpower that can’t get out of their own way. So then, what makes the difference?
It comes down the motivational force behind your mourney…

Goals are a very abstract idea, especially if you have a big goal like growing your company by 100% or losing 50lbs. The reason they’re so hard to grasp is because you’ve never achieved them before (otherwise they wouldn’t be a goal). So the idea can achieving them can seem very weird. That’s why getting 1% better every day is so important. Because it takes the focus off of the abstract idea of your big goal and puts the focus on today. Living life is a continuum: on one side, you’re living life unconsciously and letting life happen to you. On the other side, you’re living life consciously and making life happen for you. How far along you are on the consciousness continuum is based around one thing: your level of awareness. One thing to start building awareness around is your beliefs. Your beliefs are the foundation of your life, if you will. You will take action or not take action based on the beliefs you have. There’s a model in science called the bell curve that illustrates the distribution of results for an
experiment. On either side of the curve, usually at the lowest points, you find the exceptions of
the experiment. Those are the outcomes that happened LEAST often. In the middle is where
you’ll the rule of the experiment. Those are the outcomes that happened MOST often.
Outcomes in life follow the same exact pattern. A few people are the exception, and LOTS AND
LOTS of people are the rule. The question is, what makes someone an outlier in life, letting
them break away from the herd?

The average person today has less control over their life than ever before in recent history.
From the onslaught of taxes to the manipulation of the healthcare system, outside forces
currently have a strangle hold on society. That is, unless we as individuals start to realize and
recognize the things we do have control over. Because when we control the controllables, we
become strong, resilient, and unstoppable.

Today we cover why we’re making the name change. More importantly, why it’s important to understand that what we’re all doing in life is a journey. That it takes time. That it’s an ongoing process.
We’ll also talk about what you should expect moving forward. We’ll still be doing deep dives into specific personal development topics to pull out action items that we can apply to our lives. We’ll also be interviewing people who have achieved in many areas of life so we can learn about their wins and losses and hey they maneuvered through the journey along the way.

If you find yourself in the place as you were last year, even though you vowed to make significant changes in your life, you’re not alone. Millions of people set out with the intention of achieving lofty goals, only to find themselves right where the started. But this isn’t a dysfunction in YOU, per se. It’s only a dysfunction in the way you’re setting and pursuing your goals. That’s why it’s time to re-evaluate your current goal setting system, so you can make sustainable change happen and become your best self possible.
In this episode we talk about:
Making a lasting change in your health and fitness is challenging. In fact, it’s likely one of the most challenging endeavors you’ll every undertake in your whole life. There are ups and downs. There are obstacles. There are plateaus. And there are going to plenty of times when you want to quit. Which is why having a strong social support group around you is imperative. They’ll be there for you when you fall down.
Sometimes, though, it’s your support group that drags you down. It’s your support group that keeps you from making progress. It’s your support group that undermines you when you’re trying to better yourself. And it’s THIS type of “social support” that you need to be aware of. Because negative social support is real. And it will keep you from your goals if you let it.
In this episode, we talk about the main forms of negative social support, including…

We’ve become accustomed to letting other people or other things make decisions for us. We let our doctor tell us what to do about our health. We let our boss tell us what to do about our career. And we let our phone tell us what to pay attention and what to believe. We’ve essentially lost the ability to make any critical judgments or to have a conversation with someone that disagrees with our beliefs. And yet critical thinking could potentially save your life. There’s a dangerous path that many people take when it comes to dealing with circumstances. They come to resent hard circumstances because they THINK those circumstances have done them wrong. The feeling of resentment is a very selfish feeling. One that feels good in the moment, because you get to lay blame on someone or something else for your shortcomings. In today’s society, we spend a lot of time ignoring important information. We ignore the important things going on around us so we don’t have to think it. Today’s Good Wolf Books episode covers the book The Scarcity Brain by Michael Easter. In the book, Michael suggests that our “craving mindset” is captured by a process that he calls the Scarcity Loop. The loop is a sequence of events that hooks your brain into wanting more of the ting you’re doing (think gambling, shopping, and scrolling). Today we talk about 5 ideas from the book to help optimize your life and bring you closer to the excellence that you’re after. Here’s what we talk about…

The metric that our healthcare system uses to define our health has been leading us down the wrong path. Body Mass Index, or BMI, was never meant to be used on an individual level. And yet, that’s how the medical community categorizes. BMI is deceiving because not all body tissue is created equal. In other words, people who have lots of fat on their body, regardless of their actual weight, are still less metabolically healthy than those who don’t. In this episode we dive into why BMI is useless as a health metric and why being skinny-fat is more dangerous than just being fat: * How you BMI is actually calculated… * What the categories of BMI mean… * How we came to use BMI as a health metric at all, even though it wasn’t intended for that us… * How to use body fat percent to gauge your true metabolic health * How to use waist-to-hip ratio as a better measure than BMI… * Much more!

I call those the “Natural Laws” of health and fitness. They are “natural laws” because they can apply to most people most of the time. Unlike “positive laws”, which are enacted by governments and, I would argue, also adopted by society as limiting beliefs, natural laws are meant to empower you to become your best self. In today’s episode, we cover laws 14-20 of the Natural Laws of Health and Fitness (you can find the previous 13 HERE → https://youtu.be/cB0NoSjIjI4, and HERE → https://youtu.be/cB0NoSjIjI4 )...* How your mental state is supporting your poor decisions * Why you’re the easiest person to fool * The importance of weight training for longevity (and to not die) * How comfort is killing you and you need pain to survive and thrive * Much more!

Our health as a society has been deteriorating for years. More than 70% of people are overweight or obese. Millions of people have diagnosed type 2 diabetes with millions more walking around with insulin resistance. Needless to say, when a “miracle drug” for weight loss comes around in this environment, there’s a good chance that it will catch fire. And so it is with the drugs, Wegovy and Ozempic. The question is, are these drugs truly the miracle they’re being touted to be? Or are they yet another let down? In this episode we dive into the research behind semaglutide to figure out how useful it really is. We talk about:

For decades now we’ve been inundated with self-help gurus telling us how happy we need to be. If you go to Amazon and type in “books on happiness” you’ll find 9,000 options to choose from. All of this focus and emphasis on attaining happiness can make you feel like a madman if, in fact, you don’t “feel happy”. But what if we’re trying TOO hard to be happy? What if we’re emphasizing happiness so much that we’re actually more unhappy than we would be otherwise. In this episode we look at the outcomes of 2 studies that show that we are, in fact, too focused on happiness. We talk about:

It wasn’t all that long ago that society had a very positive view of old age. We believed that old age meant gaining experience and wisdom. We believed that, through gaining said wisdom, we would then be able to teach others about how we lived life so we could help the younger generations avoid our mistakes. Somewhere along the lines, though, growing old became less about having and sharing wisdom and more about being diseased and disabled. We shifted our mindset about aging from an empowering mindset with thoughts of health and vitality to limiting beliefs of disease and decrepitude. Although it’d be nice to think that this transition was unintentional, the truth is much more nuanced than that. Over time, the “authority” on old age shifted. And that shift led down the path of destruction we’re currently on…a path the tears the power and independence away from the aging community and toward a healthcare system that hell-bent on scrounging every dollar they can out of society. In this series, we’ll cover the history of the mindset of aging to see how this shift happened. We’ll also talk about what it takes to overcome the disease and disability we deem as “normal aging”, to empower ourselves to be healthy and vibrant at 100 years old. In this episode (Part #3), I talk with Nikki Taylor, Owner and Instructor at Yoga Studio43 in Alexandria, KY. Nikki is a very driven, passionate person with wisdom well beyond her years. As you’ll hear, a lot of that wisdom was brought about through very challenging life events that left her strong and resilient. We talk about: * Why the ability to detach from the outcome is important for progress * How the loss of a family member helped Nikki clarify her own purpose * What Nikki does to keep herself moving forward everyday, regardless of obstacles * How to utilize the breath to bring your focus back to the moment * So much more…

Wisdom, in case you don’t know, is simply knowledge in action. It’s taking the knowledge you gain and making it a part of your life. Because, contrary to popular belief, knowledge is not power. Knowledge is only potential power. Knowledge BECOMES power once you do something with it…and THAT is when it also becomes wisdom.
Our goal with COACH TALK, then, is to take your questions (which you can submit through Facebook or Instagram DM) and then have a discussion about them between one of our Thriveology Coaches and me. This way you get multiple perspectives on the topic and, hopefully, gain better clarity around what can work best for you to overcome your challenge moving forward.
In this episode we’re joined by our Fitness Coach, Sharon Miller. We talk about:

When we hear the word “discipline” we think about punishment. In grade school we were disciplined for being kids and getting “out of hand”. In high school and college we were told to be disciplined in our studies to get good grades and graduate with flying colors. And at our jobs we’re told we need to be discipline and follow the bosses directions. And, in this way, discipline was and is a punishment. But the truth about discipline is much more than that. The act of being discipline is much more than following an arbitrary set of rules that our teachers had in school or doing as we’re told in our jobs. No, this type of discipline is control…it’s NOT discipline. And no one can control you but YOU.And THAT is what discipline is all about. Lt. Wilson has been the epidemy of discipline over the course of his short 25 years on earth. From having discipline to be the best athlete in high school, to thriving at West Point as a D1 basketball player, to striving to be the best soldier he can be in the American Army, Lt. Wilson continues to persevere. In this episode (Part #3) we talk about:

It’s easy to buy into the idea that progress should happen quickly. We’re constantly sold the belief that change happens in a few weeks, goals can be achieved by next month, or millions of dollars can be made by the end of the year. While there are certainly outliers that anybody and everybody can point to for support of these beliefs, you must remember that they are called outliers for a reason. The truth of the matter is, progress takes time. And in that time, it’s very likely you’ll have to go through some pain. Now, that doesn’t mean you’ll go through physical pain, per se (although, if you’re talking about exercise, that’s exactly what you’ll go through). For most people, most of the time, it’s the mental pain that we strive to avoid. And it’s that exact pain that we NEED if we’re going to make progress in anything. That’s the truth. Progress needs pain. It needs discomfort. It’s need effort. And it needs time. Progress doesn’t happen overnight. But it does happen…if you allow it to. That’s what we’ll be trying to figure out during this series… what we can do to move away from the belief that progress happens quickly and towards the belief that the effort is where the magic lies.In this episode I talk with Thriveology Fitness Coach, Taylor McGrath. While Taylor is a spry 25 year old, she is, as she likes to say, an old soul in a young body. She’s also made some significant changes in her life, starting at around 19 years old. Which is hard to believe, because we THINK that 19 year olds shouldn’t know any better. But what you’ll find is, at least for this youngster, sometimes we should follow the example of those we don’t expect. In this episode (Part #3) we talk about:

I probably hear someone once a week say “if only there were 25 hours in a day” or “if only there were more time”. It’s not unusual to think that we could get more done “if only” our time were less limited. Besides the less obvious health issues that would arise from having 25, 35, or even 45 hours in a day, the truth of the matter is, no matter how much time we’re given, we’ll find a way to fill it up. As Parkinson’s Law tells us, our tasks will expand to fulfill the time allotted to their completion. The truth of the matter is, we ALL have 24 hours to work with in a day. Some people use that 24 hours and, over time, become billionaires. Other people use that same 24 hours, seem to work harder, seem to be more diligent, and still end up unhappy and unfulfilled. So, no one is given extra time. No one granted more time so that they can achieve more than you can. What’s more likely, at least from what I’ve found in my personal discovery of my own time management, is that you’re not spending time of the right things. The things that you’re spending time on, instead, are mostly unnecessary distractions or, worse, someone else’s idea of how you should be spending your time. This series will tackle the compelling question of how do some people use their time to achieve greatness, while other people, given the same amount of time and usually putting in more hard work, seem to be spinning their wheels going no where? In this episode I talk with Jon Curl, AKA JonJon. Jon is a radio DJ for the Cincinnati-based station, KISS 107. Over the years of knowing Jon, I’ve noticed that he’s shifted his way of thinking about how he spends his time. He’s become more purposeful in what he says YES to and what he says NO to, ensuring that he’s not overloaded with unnecessary stress which keeps him from prioritizing his family. In this episode (Part #3) we talk about: · Jon’s 15-year journey from radio intern to afternoon prime-time show host· How Jon has shifted his thinking about success over time· The biggest pitfalls of becoming a local celebrity· Why Jon is more purposeful about what he says YES to· What drives Jon to fulfill his purpose in life· So much more… Follow Jon Curl Facebook: https://bit.ly/4086crN Instagram: https://bit.ly/3KWYZq9 iHeart Radio/KISS107: https://kisscincinnati.iheart.com/featured/jonjon-and-friends/ Be sure to connect with Thriveology and Good Wolf Radio: Thriveology: http://bit.ly/3TILsVR Good Wolf Radio: http://bit.ly/42I0lMf Instagram: https://bit.ly/3K6XGVl Facebook: https://bit.ly/3LKDpGh

One of the basic struggles many of us have when we’re looking to improve our wellbeing is solving the problems along the way. Whether you’re trying to get rid of some body fat and hit a weight loss plateau, are working toward a deadlift personal record and can’t seem to progress your weights, or are looking to run your first marathon but can’t seem run further than 5 miles without being in pain, the likelihood of you running into a problem is VERY high! So it’s important that we learn to overcome problems as they arise and, over time, become more and more confident in our ability to find solutions we need to. The problem is, many of us look for any and all EXTERNAL reasons as to why we’re having trouble overcoming a problem we run into. This is problem because, about 80% of the time, WE are the problem. In other words, when it comes to problem solving, we get in our own way more often than not. And, until you come to understand how your progress is being held up by YOU, you’ll always have a hard time achieving the things you’re after, whether that’s health and fitness mastery, more wealth, better relationships, or a more fulfilling career. That is going to be the main focus of this upcoming series: how we stand in our own way when we’re trying to solve problems and how we can start to move ourselves aside so we can move forward again. Because the longer we stay still, the more likely we’ll end up quitting our endeavor altogether. As Sir Isaac Newton tells us, an object in motion stays in motion, and an object at rest stays at rest, unless an equal and opposite force acts upon it. In this episode of Better Problem Solving (part #3) I talk with Bob Schneider. Bob is a Member of the Thriveology Pack, a close friend and mentor, and he owns and operates a residential real estate agency where his daily activity involves moment-to-moment problem. In this episode we discuss… · How Bob goes about fixing tractors…without knowing anything about them· How Bob was thrown to the problem-solving-wolves at an early age· Why most people get STUCK in their pursuit of just about anything· What HARD EFFORT actually looks and feels like· So much more… Follow Bob Schneider Facebook: http://bit.ly/3KPAICA Bob’s Real Estate Investment Company: http://bit.ly/3GwHTwM Be sure to connect with Thriveology and Good Wolf Radio: Thriveology: http://bit.ly/3TILsVR Good Wolf Radio: http://bit.ly/42I0lMf Instagram: https://bit.ly/3K6XGVl Facebook: https://bit.ly/3LKDpGh

For many, many years society was led to believe that fat was the cause of all of our heart issues and that eating too much of it would make us fat and unhealthy. Fast forward many decades later and it turns out that fat plays a smaller role in heart disease than we thought and that the real culprit behind our weight-gaining society is sugar. Sugar has a consumer product has only been around for a few hundred years. In the beginning sugar was pretty scarce so only the rich could gain access to it. It wasn’t until the late 1800s and early 1900s that sugar became abundantly available for the world to consume. It was also at this time that the then slow but steady rise in obesity and diabetes began. That is until the advent of sugary drinks and an abundance of ultraprocessed Frankenfoods entered the market. Then obesity and diabetes began a much more rapid ascend. While sugar is the ONLY culprit in the story of obesity, it is most certainly one of the major ones, if not THE major one. Which is why, in this series, we start a conversation about the effects that sugar have on the body. In this episode of the Sugar Effect (part #3) I talk with Dr. Steve Hannegan. Steve is a Doctor of Chiropractic and is certified in Applied Clinical Nutrition. In this series we do our first book review, covering the wonderful book by Johann Hari, Stolen Focus. Here’s how I would sum up the book in 3 sentences: Our focus is deteriorating which is leading to a lower quality of life. The main culprit of our focus-attrition are digital devices, followed by poor sleep. lack of nutrition, environmental toxins, and a sedentary lifestyle. If we want to reclaim our focus, we need to start by taking personal responsibility for our actions and, at the same time, bond together to help enact regulations that prioritize Social Growth over Economic Growth. Over the course of the next 3 episodes we will look at 10 nuggets of wisdom we can pull from Stolen Focus. There are countless bits of great information in the book but, sadly, we don’t have the time to review everything. If you’d like to download the notes for the Stolen Focus book review, go to Thriveology.us/goodwolfbooks and find Stolen Focus notes download. The Greek Philosopher, Socrates, once said that it’s disgraceful to grow old and never fully develop the body’s strength and beauty to their highest limits. Part of the reason we don’t embody this belief today is that we view the body as a curse and not a blessing. We believe as a society that aging happens because we get older, when, in reality, aging happens because we are disgraceful to our bodies as we get older. As Socrates was alluding to, the human body is meant to be challenged and pushed to the test. Without this external resistance we never find out what we’re truly made of and, worse, deteriorate into the thing that we loath the most…someone who is dependent on others because we’re unable to help ourselves. Of course, it doesn’t have to be this way. We can, and should, strive to be our best through the regular training and challenging of our bodies. To start doing this, though, it means shifting our mindset. We currently view exercise as thing we HAVE to do to beat disease. But, until we shift our mindset to exercise and training as the things we GET to do to become our best selves, physically, mentally, spiritually, relationally, then we’ll have a hard time making exercise a regular part of our lives. In this series, we begin what will end up being a long conversation about weight training. We discuss the importance of the training mindset, how training as a way of life was developed over 2500 years ago, and why you need resistance in your life if you’re going to become your best self possible. In this episode (part #3) I interview Bret Tiefermann, a Member of the Thriveology Pack and someone who has seen significant improvement in their life thanks to weight training… · How Bret realized it was time to start prioritizing his health· The types of lifts Bret uses at age 64 to optimize his body· Why lifting weights IMPROVED eliminated his tendonitis shoulder pain· How Bret has seen a massive change in his every day routine due to weight training· So much more… Be sure to connect with Thriveology and Good Wolf Radio on Facebook, Instagram, and YouTube

We recently reviewed the 14 Natural Laws of Health & Fitness. These laws were distilled from our previous sessions where we covered topics from changing identity to overcoming obstacles to counting calories. The Natural Laws apply to all people at all times. To get your copy of the 14 Natural Laws in PDF, go to www.thriveology.us/goodwolfradio and enter your email. It’s not an understatement to say that the decisions you make in life will dictate the outcome of health, wealth, and longevity. While we all understand that to some degree, it’s hard to appreciate how much your decisions are impacting your long-term outcomes because…well…those outcomes take a long time to show up. So learning to make better decisions sooner than later is going to help you in the short AND long term. But there are a BUNCH of different factors that influence decision making, from your emotions to your hunger to the way you were brought up to where you currently live. And learning how to control those states and bias’s to guide you to better decisions is necessary for your long-term success. That’s what we’ll be discussing in the 3-part series, the states, traits, and deeply in-grained beliefs that lead us to making the decision we make AND how we can overcome those areas to help us better decisions moment-to-moment and in the future. In this episode (part #3) we discuss: · The importance of taking a deep breath from time to time· How to 10 minutes can lead to a better decision· What forests and trees have to do with decision making· Aligning your values and goals to keep your progress on track· So much more…

Over the course of the previous 8 weeks, we’ve covered an area of topics. From showing up to finding motivation to counting calories to overcoming obstacles, all of these topics have helped us achieve higher levels of health and fitness mastery as we integrate new ideas on how to make them better.
But we only REALLY build knowledge when we recall what we’ve learned so we can refine the knowledge and turn it into wisdom. Because knowledge is only wisdom once it’s put into action.
And that’s what this week is all about. We’re going to put a “pause” on new learning so we can review our previous lessons and recall the strategies that we’ve gleaned from each one. I’ve put these strategies into a neat sequence we’re calling “The Natural Laws of Health & Fitness”. To learn more about what a “natural law” is, be sure to watch part #1 of this series!

The process of aging can be very challenging, especially if we don’t follow some basic rules and guidelines to keep ourselves on the straight and narrow. For the most part, we think we know what to expect when it comes to the aging process. However, what society tells us “aging” looks like may not be true.
That’s why it’s important to look at aging through more than one lens. Age as a number is only part of the equation, and a small part at that. There are 4 dimensions of aging worth considering. And if you can find ways to influence at least 2 of these 4 dimensions, then you’ll be well on your way to living a healthy, empowered life well into your later years.
In this episode on Why We Age I interview Jan Tiefermann. Jan has been a Member of the Thriveology Pack for almost 10 years. She’s inspiration to anyone, young or older, looking to maintain optimal health as they age. In this episode (part #3) we discuss…
· Why Jan chooses to learn a new hobby each year
· How Jan has changed her mind on motivation
· The thing that keep Jan energetic beyond 60
· Why strength has become an important focus in her training routine
· So much more…

We like to think that change happens in a linear fashion, going from point “A” to point “B” with no disturbance or disruption on the way. Of course, when we actually take time think about it, we know that there are many bumps and bruises along the way, no matter what goal we’re pursuing.
These “bumps and bruises” are known as obstacles. Obstacles can have a negative connotation in the context of pursuing goals because…well…by definition, they stand in the way of our progress.
While we certainly can’t control whether or not obstacles will occur (because they most definitely will), we can control how we confront them. And the better prepared we are to confront obstacles when they arise, the more likely we are to overcome them when the time comes.
In this episode of Overcoming Obstacles (part #1) we discuss…

· How to attach your actions to your identity for better results
· Asking “Why” 3 times for more clarity on goals
· Why it’s important to leave our outcomes up to fate

In our previous series, we started a conversation about Calories. Counting Calories is one of the most popular strategies for losing weight. And, when done correctly, can be very effective. However, there’s much more to the equation than just “Calories-in VS Calories”.
In this series, we’ll be talking about the second part of that equation: Calories-out. While trying to accurately calculate the Calories you’re eating can be a challenge in and of itself, figuring out the Calories you’re burning is no simpler. There are a number of factors that go into play when it comes to burning Calories, many of which are easily overlooked or simply neglected.
So, empowering yourself with the knowledge behind what happens when you’re burning Calories throughout day will go a long way in helping you achieve your health and fitness goals, no matter if you’re trying to lose weight, improve performance, or put on muscle.
In this episode of Burning Calories (part #1) we discuss…
· How many Calories in takes to burn a pound of fat
· Why you should be more realistic with your fat loss goals
· How shifting away from ultraprocessed foods helps with Calories regulation
· Why fiber and protein intake are important

Over the years there have been a number of diet and nutrition programs that are based around counting Calories. While the Calorie is a necessary measure to help us understand how much food we’re putting into our bodies, is it the best way for us to be tracking our food consumption?
When it comes to counting Calories, there is much more than meets the eye. Yes, all Calories are Calories, but not all Calories are created equal. And in this 3 part series we pick apart why it is that what you THINK you’re eating and what you’re ACTUALLY eating are two very different quantities.
In this episode of Counting Calories (part #3) we talk with Thriveology’s Nutrition Coach, Treves Janszen, who has gone through her own health and fitness transformation over the years. In this episode we discuss…
· Why Treves decided to lose weight in the first place
· How restrictive diets can be so mentally draining
· Why you shouldn’t be so strict sometimes

When it come to our physical health, we spend a lot of time talking about and focusing on exercise as the main tool for improvement. Exercise, of course, is a necessity in our modern lives. But is this the only form of movement we need to build into our routine?
And the answer is, of course, surely not. Exercise is just one type of movement we should employ to move our way toward health and fitness mastery. There are other types of movement that should not only be included in your routine but may also have a greater overall impact on your long-term health.

Motivation is a very important aspect of pursuing and achieving your health and fitness goals. Without it, you’ll have a hard time putting in the effort necessary to achieve any real results. The question is, why do so many us also put off our hopes and dreams for better health because of “lack of motivation”?
As it turns out, we may have been getting the equation wrong all along. While motivation is a very important attribute in our journey toward health and fitness mastery, we may be using it incorrectly and, worse, it may be keeping us pursuing our goals and becoming our best selves
During this 3-part series on Motivation, we pick this idea apart. We look at motivation through the lens of neuroscience to see what we can learn about its underpinnings, and put a plan together to build sustainable motivation for lasting results.
