What might have begun as a great investment opportunity turned into a love affair with the town of Greybull, the people and community there, and with renovation. Plus she’s documented it all online, with literally a reel a day since she started renovating showing everything she’s doing, totally solo! Summary:Susan and Boris, founders of Lumen Camps, share their journey from a honeymoon road trip to building a successful hospitality brand. They started with a 20-year-old Land Cruiser and a rooftop tent, traveling from Boston to Argentina, and documenting their adventures along the way. I think we have a new first on the pod. We've had a few Cabin Culture guests on that have experienced Janice's Cozy Rock Cabin in person, but I don't think either of us have had the opportunity to visit any of the guests cabins, until now. Janice spent the weekend on an excursion to nearby Asheville North Carolina for a new tattoo and was able to enjoy the weekend at Little Mountain Aframe, hosted by Shealy who joins us on the episode today. Her new built A-frame is located in Old Forte, just down the road from Asheville and has been available to book for only about a month however, the design and build process has taken up the last few years for her and her husband Eddie. Janice and Shealy touch on all the unique design considerations made from lighting to paint, what sparked the initial idea to build their own escape, and the business approach that supports their dream cabin.

We’ve got back to back Aframes for you folks this week. Jen and Ken hop on the pod today to share with us their 1960’s Aframe in the Catskills of NY. Just recently their episode of The Cabin Chronicles debuted and they talk with Janice about the filming process and how they felt their story was told. Janice dives into the buy and renovation process with them from a 6 month closing to finding dead critters in the walls. It was a grind from the very start for them but that can make the final result all the more special. The final product is a space inspired by intentional minimalism that allows their family to disconnect, appreciate and learn from all that nature has to offer. On this episode Janice chats with Taylor Hildreth, the host at HilhauseAframe, a new build in Crosby MN. What's better than having a treehouse as a kid? Having one as an adult. Today Janice talks with Lauren and Cam from Fort Treehouse Co. who took cabining to a whole new level, literally. As some of you may have gathered from our own stories and those of our guests, building and designing your dream cabin is not easy. Steve Durand joins us again this week on the podcast, for an update on current events in Quebec as it relates to short term rentals and AirBNB regulations. Two weeks ago in Montreal there was an apartment fire that killed seven, and unfortunately was home to several AirBNB’s. While the Quebec province has required STR registration for some time, it wasn’t enforced (by them or AirBNB) until now, when outside pressure has forced them to address this. AirBNB has now shut down all short term rentals not registered (and displaying their registration number on their listing) which has put a lot of hosts in tough situations. We talk about how this impacted Steve specifically, as well as how all STR hosts can use this as a lesson to help refine their business models and backup plans.

Today we're joined by Keryn owner of Kulhaus Cabin, an A-frame in South Lake Tahoe California. She spent her childhood camping in Tahoe with her family and her memories of time spent outside and the smell pine drew her back to the area in hopes of sharing those experiences with her son. On this episode we have Devon Loerop, an Engineer by weekday and one man building, designing, media machine by weekend. After college in the midwest he packed up his life and headed for the mountains on the West coast. Steve Durand and his beautiful Malamute, Inuk join us this week on the podcast. 7 years ago, after winding down a career in music production, he bought 465 acres an hour outside Ottawa in the Canadian wilderness with goals to: live a more sustainable life, learn how to survive independently, and share his experience while protecting the land. In that time he's established himself a homestead and built three cabins which he now rents to those looking for an unforgettable immersive experience in nature. Steve maintains all the trails and cabins on the property himself while still some how finding the time to capture it all to share with everyone. Sacha Roy, a Canadian film maker who traveled the world filming with Red Bull, decided he wanted a change of pace in his life. He began dreaming up an off grid escape for himself when he found a piece of land tucked away in the woods overlooking the Canadian wilderness. With a curious mindest (and some youtube tutorials) Sacha designed and built himself a simple but elegant “sugar shack” style cabin, that would eventually be featured in dwell. His youtube channel mixes beautiful scenery with different stages of the cabins development and his process for installing things like solar, rain water collection, and heating. We ran out of time with some great conversation but hope to have Sacha back again in the future to dive deeper into the details of all his off grid systems.
