The letter emphasizes the power of shared faith, the radical nature of Christian forgiveness, and the importance of fellowship. God uses the word "hope" differently than we do. Hope, when used in the Bible, means something we have a joyful expectation of, something we can put confidence in, something that is as secure as a cord holding us to safety or home or rescue. Emptying ourselves like Jesus did requires us to first let go of our will - what we have determined should be done - and instead be filled with God's will. Jesus knew He was going to die. What can we learn from his words to his disciples before this certain death?
Acts 4:33 tells us that “great grace was upon them all”. This lesson examines how this grace is created within a group and the fruit that results from it. Does “great grace” describe our church? By Blake Edwards.
Habakkuk is a record of the prophet Habakkuk's conversation with God. He has prayed to God and God has answered. There is so much evil around Habakkuk and he doesn't really know what to do or why God is allowing it to continue. Now in chapter 3, we see Habakkuk's final response to God's answer and plan. He prays to God out of humility, confidence and trust.
In Romans 1, Paul talks about God's wrath and the things or people that will be subject to His wrath. Then he says in verse 23 that people have "exchanged the glory of the immortal God." He goes on to talk about idolatry and all different ways they/we might exchange the glory of God. So, what are the ways we might exchange God's glory today? There's nothing we can do to diminish His glory! However, the glory we ought to give God can be changed to another like Paul says.
Paul tells Timothy to not be entangled in civilian pursuits. What does that look like and how can we be sure we are committed to the Lord? There are many pursuits that can follow, but commitment to God and serving Him must be the top pursuit.
God desires all to be saved or come to salvation. Does God set conditions on salvation? Is there anything God desires us to do in order to be saved?
Joy is part of the fruit of the Spirit and fundamental to many characteristics we’re supposed to display, so why aren’t we more joyful?
The idea of giving a cup of cold water to someone seems so simple and is not glamorous. In Matthew 10:42 that's exactly what Jesus highlights as something that is great in His kingdom! It can be simple and not even recognized or the one thing we are desperately in need of. Every little thing we do for our brothers and sisters counts. It all matters and Jesus makes that clear.
Why does the Christian still suffer from sin? 1 John teaches that the Christian should sin no longer, but we still often struggle with temptations and passions. It is only in Jesus that we find relief, and it is our love for Him and for His church that gives us confidence.
In Matthew 15 Jesus has a conversation with the Pharisees and scribes about cleanliness. They were focusing on outward cleanliness while Jesus focuses on what is inside. He says that "what comes out of the mouth proceeds from the heart, and this defiles a person." In this lesson, our speech and communication is the specific aspect of what comes from the heart we look at.
The end of Acts 12 says that the "word of God increased and multiplied." So, how do we go from the Apostle James being killed at the beginning of Acts 12 to God's word being spread? We see the Christians praying earnestly, Peter freed from prison, the church encouraged, and Herod punished by God. Through all of this, a potentially discouraging event then leads to God's kingdom being spread further.
Following our theme of "Jesus Christ, Our Foundation", this lesson focuses on what Jesus did to become our foundation. He became human. All that came before Him failed to live up to the image mankind was created in, but Jesus shows us how to truly live as God's creation (His own image). The Creator became the creature in order to be our foundation of faith.
In 1 John 2, Christ is described as our Advocate. Much of 1 John is about being in fellowship with God and we need Jesus in this role to be in fellowship with God. Why do we need someone to be our Advocate? What are the benefits of having Jesus with us as we stand before God?
We see people worshipping God throughout the Scriptures. God is undoubtedly deserving of all praise, adoration and worship. What is the point of our worship though? This lesson focuses on what our worship to God is meant to accomplish and how this further motivates us as believers to worship God.
God has a plan for any and all people to become his child. He wants us to become sons and daughters through His Son, but John 1:12 says He has given us this "right." God has provided us the power and privilege to be His son/daughter by being adopted into His family by the blood of Jesus.
Jesus built His church, but it's clear from the apostles' writing that they continued to build, and we are to build also. What are the mechanics of that building activity? How can we know if we are doing what Jesus intended?
Jesus Christ and the Apostles clearly teach on what our lives should look like following Christ. There is a set of ideas, morals and characteristics that are expected from believers. Under the covenant with Moses, there was a special group of people that would live holy lives and represent God to all people. They were called priests, but God had this expectation of all Israel really. We are priests under Christ and there is purpose behind the holy lives God wants us to live.
Justice isn't something only God is interested in and active in. It's something His people should be active in as well. Not the vengeance aspect, but the healing and support aspect for the afflicted.
Teaching, making disciples, saving souls, winning people to Christ is what all disciples should be involved in. We need to find our purpose and place in spreading the Gospel. It is meant to be a team effort that all of us can accomplish, but how? In 1 Corinthians 9, I think Paul gives a great example of how any person can find their place in evangelism. Serve all. We can teach in many situations, but we can be a servant in every situation.
We were glad to have Josh Lewis (along with his wife Kirby and son Ezekiel) with us a few weeks ago. His lesson was focussed on confession and repentance in the Bible. These two concepts are clearly connected and are meant to go together as we confront our sin. Also, they are not exclusively a New Testament idea at all. Specifically, we look at the differences in how King Saul and King David respond to their sin. By seeing the ways God's people were always to respond, we learn how we ought to respond to God today.
In the Gospels, there are numerous times people ask Jesus a question. Seeing how Jesus responds can be extremely helpful in understanding the truths He wants people to know, how to apply these truths and what can get in our way of hearing or following Jesus. In this lesson, we look at some of the times Jesus responds to questions with His own question. As part of our theme, "Jesus Christ, Our Foundation," seeing Jesus' questions and responses to questions helps us establish the foundation that Jesus wants us to.
The psalms glorify God, but they also describe how creation glorifies Him and how we should glorify Him. His glory makes demands upon us, such as patterning ourselves after Him and teaching others about Him. Listen and consider how you can better glorify our Creator.
With our theme in mind, "Jesus Christ, Our Foundation", we will take a look at establishing a good foundation. This is a follow-up lesson on Ezra from a month ago where we looked at chapters 1-6. In this lesson, we pick up in chapter 7 and notice what patterns Ezra shows to help us have a good foundation for our faith. Also, what should we do if we have a wrong foundation?
We are supposed to boast. In fact, we all do boast. Our lifestyle, how we treat people, and our approach to what we do shows our boast. To find out what this is we need to dig deeper into what we do by asking the "why". Jesus Christ should be our boast and is the only thing that will be the foundation we can count on.
Faith and works (or Faith vs. Works) is a topic of conversation among most Christians and it seems like it was a common conversation in the 1st Century. The people of faith we see in scripture and the ways faith is described points to a strong connection to works instead of the two being opposed. In fact, it looks inevitable that faith leads to works and faith is seen by works.
In Malachi 4, the day of the Lord is described and clearly means one thing for those that fear God and another for the arrogant and unrighteous. One aspect of the day of the Lord that we might not always consider is the multiple meanings of this day and the different ways to understand it. This lesson explores those ideas and what we should do in light of Malachi's words.
With our theme this year being "Jesus Christ, Our Foundation", this lesson focuses on Jesus from the beginning to the cross. John 1 says His beginning is the Word that was with God prior to creation. We are established on the foundation of Jesus as the Word, but we are built on Jesus as a sacrificial King. How does the foundation Jesus laid impact our lives and decisions?
In Ezra 1-6, some Israelites living in exile are able to go back to work on the temple. It's a long process for sure! They are met with a lot of opposition, but the same people that discouraged their work and tried to stop them actually wanted to join in and help early on! The leaders of the Israelites respond, "You have nothing to do with us in building a house to our God." Was this an appropriate response? How does this affect our work for the Lord?
Jesus clearly taught heaven and hell. The idea of hell is seen many times in the gospel accounts and the hearers of Jesus would have understood what He meant maybe more than we do. Gehenna is what Jesus taught and it is important for us to understand this teaching like they did. God has called us to a high calling, but His call leads to salvation and a life-long relationship with God.
There are two different men (Onesimus and Uriah) in the Bible that are tasked with carrying a message. Both men are serving their master and taking a message that directly impacts their lives. Neither knows what the result will be, but they show their character and commitment in their service. Believers are tasked with carrying a message as well. We are to carry the Gospel, not knowing what might happen to us. More than that, we find our very identity in the Gospel we are taking to others. Do we prove ourselves to be committed and dedicated to carrying this message? Can God trust us to be diligent servants?
How will you respond to the facts that the Christ has come? In the gospel accounts of the birth of Jesus, some respond with joy and praise, while others are troubled and threatened. We should examine our hearts to see what our response truly is, because, someday, Christ is coming again!
Something that every one of us has to do on a daily basis is make decisions. Some decisions seem clearly bigger to us while others don't seem to have as big of ramifications. The important thing is to have the right basis for making decisions and a good mindset to approach decisions. Making Spirit-led decisions will happen when we are living by the Spirit and having the mind set on the Spirit.
What was the purpose of John the Baptist? John knew his purpose and shows his dedication to this purpose. He came to point the way to Christ. He came to teach and prepare the path for the Good Teacher. He preached repentance so people could turn to God and then turn to the Christ, Jesus of Nazareth.
What does it mean to be in Christ? How important is this and how can a person have it? In Galatians, Paul explains that anyone in Christ is now an heir of the promises of God and that this is ONLY for those in Christ. So, what does it look like for Christ to live in us? What should we be doing since Christ now lives in us?
In 2 Peter, "diligence" is used a few different times. Each time, Peter is telling Christians to use diligence in specific ways to attain a certain goal or end result. How does diligence help us meet our goals as Christians? What specific areas could we use more diligence to help us in our walk as a Christian?
We finished up our yearly theme of "Shine as Lights in the World" with some thoughts on the connection of "light" and "life". Through Christ and the Gospel we are brought to life and shown a type of life we are to live in Christ. This light of Christ also brings us to eternal life with Him (2 Timothy 1:10)
Even though the apostle Paul lived a life of hardship and suffering, he still found a way to "be content in any circumstance." If we are to imitate this attitude, it will require us to change our perspective on the source of true contentment. It is only through Jesus Christ that we'll find the lasting satisfaction that our soul desires.
If you think about what is said about prayer in conversations, there can be a lot of doubts and questions about our prayers. Is my prayer being heard? Why does it seem like God isn't answering my prayer? The Scripture has a great deal to say about prayer and asking things from God, so looking at the totality of what God says is the best place to turn. This helps us take a fresh look at prayer and might answer some of those difficult questions we have.
In Mark 7-8 there are 3 very unique miracles Jesus performs. Every miracle is unique, but these three stand out for a few reasons. The first miracle is Jesus casting out a demon in a Canaanite woman's daughter. The second miracle is a deaf and mute man that people bring to Jesus and the last is a blind man that people brought to Jesus. In all of these miracles we learn without a doubt that Jesus can heal and bring about salvation for anyone and everyone and is the only One that can do this. Do we believe this like we should? What do we do with this reality?
In Hebrews 11, Abraham's faith is discussed and given as an example for what our faith should be like. He displayed faith from the moment God called him! He was faithful as he left his home to find the home God was providing him. He lived his life as a wanderer, separated from those that did not share in the promises and continued to follow the Lord by faith in hopes of the promised land. We are to have this same faith.
Continuing our theme of the year, Shine as Lights in the World, we continue to look at an aspect of the text in Philippians 2. Shinning in this world requires we are devoid of grumbling and disputing, according to Paul. What does this mean? In what context does Paul mean we are to remove disputing? Finally, what will the world see when Christians do this?
In Acts 11, the believers in Antioch are called Christians. This is the first time that followers of Christ are called this. It's likely that this name was given them by the the people in Antioch and not by the believers themselves. Why did they receive this name? What were they doing and what did their lives look like to garner this title? Whatever was true of them should be true of us today if we want to wear the name Christian.
Jesus speaks to His disciples in John 14-16 about leaving them and what will happen after He leaves. He is sending a Helper, the Spirit of truth, and He cannot come unless Jesus leaves. In this lesson, we take a look at what Jesus has to say about the Spirit, the nature of his work, how His disciples will benefit from the Spirit and how this played out in Acts. Seeing what this looks like in Acts lets us understand the Spirit's work even more and helps us see the Holy Spirit as we should.
When you go to apply for a job, there are titles, job descriptions, guidelines and so forth. When we look at the Church in the Bible, we notice that God has established roles, types of people that fill these roles, work that needs to be done and how those things should be done. In this lesson, we take a similar approach to someone applying for a job to see what role do we fill and what is a needed "job" in the Church.
What is the picture that comes to your mind when you think of "church"? Some think of the building they go to on Sundays or the things they do while there. Some think of dressing up and going to be with other Christians. The Bible presents many different images of what God's church is and this help us see the church the way God sees her. Seeing the Church how God does is critical in seeing ourselves the way we should and fulfilling His purpose for us.
Continuing our theme for the year of "Shine as Lights in the World" from Philippians 2, in this lesson we discuss James 4:1-10. There are things that get in the way of God's light shining through us and James 4 mentions some of those things. Will you allow disputes, jealousies, envies or selfishness to dim God's light in your life?
Paul writes to Titus in chapter 2 about encouragement and teaching for the churches he would visit and the men and women he would teach. He speaks about older men, older women, young women, younger men, children, slaves and so on. A common instruction or characteristic he wanted them to grow in was sensibility.Your Bible might read self-control, but what does it mean to be sensible? How can we be sensible or improve in sensibility? And what will this lead to in our lives?

Our relationship with God is changed, but in what ways does this change how we see each other? What about those that are not in Christ?

Ephesians 4 speaks of walking worthy of the calling and then Paul focuses on the oneness and unity we must have. This produces growth of the church into the image of Christ. What is the Christians responsibility in this? What ought to be our mindset that leads to this growth?
Have you claimed Jesus as you're King? As Jesus was led out before the crowd, Pilate said "Behold, your King!" What did they see in Jesus? They saw a man beaten and bruised with a crown of thorns and purple robe on among other things. They didn't see the king they wanted nor did they see Jesus as the King He is. He may not fit your idea of a king, but will you confess and claim Him as He is?
Wisdom is where we put into practice the knowledge and learning we have experienced. It is not only something gained, but wisdom is something that is shown and also shared. James says in chapter 1 and verse 5 that if you lack wisdom, ask God and He will give it. Is God the source of wisdom and discernment in your life? Are you allowing yourself or other influences guide you and be your source of wisdom in your life?
What does it mean to be led by the Spirit? Many of us use this phrase and all Christians should desire to be Spirit led. In Galatians and Romans, we find this phrase and idea explained. It is so important to understand how we can be led by the Spirit and who/what is leading us. So, what does this mean and how are we to be led by the Spirit?
In James 1 we read that God is the Father of Lights and that there is no variation or change within Him. God is constant and the only One we can rely on. What does this mean that He is the Father of Lights and how does this change us as His children?
Hope is a key element of Christianity, but it is also a vital attribute of a Christian. Like all other aspects of Christian character, this means that hope is something we can work toward and add to ourselves. In the book of Romans, we read three distinct instances where hope is mentioned. What does it mean to Work for Hope? How can a Christian do this?
There is nothing more important than a person's salvation. It makes sense that Paul would say in Philippians 2:12 that we should "work out your own salvation with fear and trembling." What does this mean though? How can I work out my salvation?
In Philippians 4, Paul has several closing instructions for the brothers and sisters in Philippi to consider or re-consider. There are many other factors to consider and this lesson focuses on some of those things as we study Philippians 4:1-9.Phil. 4:4-7"Rejoice in the Lord always; again I will say, rejoice. Let your reasonableness4 be known to everyone. The Lord is at hand; do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus."
When God decides to provide an opportunity for you to work, serve or act, what will you do? We can't sit by and let the opportunity pass us by if God is wanting to work through us.
Who is like the Lord? In Psalm 113, the psalmist asks this question. God has proven Himself to be great and gracious and He is deserving of our praise.
How do you construe the Bible? It's not something we often think about, but it's something of utmost importance. The way we construe the Bible determines how we apply the truths we find there!
We often face intimidation from people to oppose God, and a common tool used against us is fear. We need to take stock, however, of who we fear most: God or men?

Why are we here? That's not an existential question, but, rather, a question about why God chose to save Christians and then leave them here on this earth rather than immediately take them into heaven. What should Christians be doing here? It's not a very long list.
Suffering is common to the human condition, but there is a type of suffering from which we benefit: suffering for righteousness' sake. We can prepare ourselves for that type of suffering by taking on the mind of Christ.
Jacob was significantly transformed by God's work in his life. It seems like just a few chapters to us, but for him it was an entire lifetime. Are you being transformed? God can do the same work in us if we allow Him.
We're all working to be productive, working to avoid pain, working to gain comfort, but we know those things are not ends in themselves. Once we reach those goals, we come up with new goals! There is only one true Purpose for all of our toil, and unless we work with and for Him, all of that work is vanity.

What is the foundation from which the life of a Christian grows? How do we remain firm in our faith? The answer to these and most questions Christians have centers around Jesus.
