In this animated short, a hooded giant subjects a smaller species to rigorous enslavement, in order to slowly move him forward toward an unseen goal. Through obstinate workers, and molten obstacles, the dual nature of oppressor and the oppressed prevails, allowing the cycle to continue. Enjoy the #asmr

Sharing knowledge without gain does not lead to growth. In this animated film, a wine glass discovers that in order to grow, he must be emptied of all his contents.
"POUR 101" delves deeper into the peculiar cartoon world of living and breathing wine glasses. This is the sixth animation of the series. A morphing type of synthesis occurs when a blue glass awkwardly approaches a glass filled with red. But instead of a perfect mixture, the Red glass retains size color, where as the blue glass inherits a flowing visceral mixture, causing him to grow exponentially. Attempting to obtain this abstract growth, the Red glass goes on a frustrated sprinting rampage through multiple blue colored peers, only to stumble upon an empty glass. When performing the exchange on this glass, the red glass is completely drained of its identity.. and now is empty, as the chipped glass walks away full, pleased with its new found contents.
The newly emptied glass solemnly journeys back to the beginning, where he is re-united with his first two encounters, now completely willing to share their synthesized contents back to the original source. Finally, he grows. The result of this constant process of mixture is personal growth and an odd appearance of homogeneity, for better or for worse.
"Pour 101" is a sequel to "Pour 585" as well as the five others in the series. Each film is connected through the world they inhabit, and the processes and rituals they share, but also disconnected in terms of story and context. Each film contains within a cautionary tale about the dangers of conformity and the value of individuality. The films use visual metaphor to illustrate several sociological elements, namely: The process of indoctrination, hierarchal power structures, passing of knowledge or ideology, intellectual growth, ritual, discrimination, tribal brutality, and the merits of nuance.

Molten Justice leads to tragedy for a Giant and his six tiny slaves.
The series continues with a soul grabbing molten obstacle that needs to be crossed. An opportunity for justice arises and is ceased, resulting in a brief stint of freedom for the six tiny slaves. But hope is quickly extinguished by catastrophe, leaving a sole survivor who immediately re-initiates the cycle of tyranny that he himself was subjected to prior. The new class of the oppressed is a green toned population even smaller than those who came before. They will now have to carry their own blight, which will inevitably result in their own trials toward liberation, until the cycle continues.

In an animated world of costumed creatures of all sizes, a power struggles emerges.
For some, it's a matter of survival. For others, it's a world of self-serving progress, putting others to work for what they perceive as a righteous cause. Through these trials emerge a distinct code of stoicism, struggle, and individuality. But for every benevolent soul, there is a wicked shadow close by, often within the soul itself. In this first episode, we see an individual giant progressing forward on the back of his miniature subjects. Tyranny always works in this fashion, riding on the suffering of others so you can move forward to what you view as a utopian goal. All will suffer, even the soul, which is not permitted to continue the journey to the heavens. Instead, the angel is stripped of his wings, which are consumed, and placed back to work. To serve the giant in power is their function. Breaking backs, enslaving souls.. Cometh Utopia!

"Tiny Giants" is a traditionally animated 2D series of short films. Technically, I use Adobe Animate, and I draw on a Wacom Cintiq. It's pretty much a one man show here, but I do need to thank my fantastic wife, and producer Kaori Ishida. I also want to thank the brilliant composer for this episode, @jackpiercecomposer, his score really guided the story and pacing of this piece. I would also like to thank all my Youtube members, as well as Patreon supporters.. despite being a small group, your support is very inspirational and keeps me going when I'm starting to feel the burn. Modifications in the genetic sequence results in diversity among organisms. These changes occur at many different levels, and they can have a variety of consequences. This film depicts a homogenous world of wine glasses, we see a small vitreous tribe that unwillingly spawns a vibrant genetic misfit. They immediately shun the "Freak" in the cruelest way, leaving the oddity alone and hopeless.

This entire endeavor began five years ago with the mild success of my film “Handshake”.. and then two years ago my film “Pour 585” resonated and garnered over 200 million views! A pair of animated wine glasses participate in a sadistic game, which is interrupted by a self-sacrificial rebellion. But after the tyrants are vanquished, a new game is quickly reconstituted among the former victims of oppression.
Another installment in the “POUR” Series, set in a metaphorical world of living wine glasses. This story explores a twisted game of power dynamics, where two masters dominate their smaller subjects. The only way to end the game is to force the masters to lose interest. An individual glass accomplishes this by initiating a self-sacrificial protest, shattering his own head with his fist. This becomes contagious as the others see the results. They all smash their own heads happily and the game becomes impossible to play. Realizing this, the masters move on.

Director’s notes:
"Pour 939" is an animated cartoon that was initially drawn as an exercise in visualizing the close minded, and their role in halting a fulfilling exchange of ideas. This simple metaphor was never supposed to be a stand alone film, but the more time I spent drawing it, the more I thought it could hold it's own water (or wine). Interestingly, this short film has no real story, it's simply an illustration of an idea: The moment when people who freely share thoughts are confronted with a person who is closed up. I chose the number 939 because it felt very stubborn and limited to me.
Technical notes:
This film was drawn in Adobe Animate, using a Wacom Cintiq. There are many excellent programs out there (ie flipaclip, marmoset, or doodle) but I use Adobe Animate mostly because it’s the same as the old Flash, which is really the only one I’m familiar enough with to have a consistent work flow (although I’m currently teaching myself toon boom harmony). Since I’m a traditional animator, and don’t do any type of work for gaming or 3d, I work frame by frame in a 2D manner. A dystopian reality shatters a youthful summer day, dragging multitudes of kids into a dark robot controlled factory and transforming them all into Huxleyan cyborgs. The subjugation end when one brave soul resists and re-conquers his reality, turning the technical beasts against the oppressors. "Kids of America" is an animated music video that explores the depths of technological manipulation and dependence, illustrating a victory of the mind that occurs even within the context of artificial brain implants, robot controlled assembly lines, and six legged remote control robotic dogs. "Pour 668” is a sequel to my 2018 film “Pour 585." This is another heavily metaphorical hand drawn animated film, this time a powerful pouring machine inflicts punishment on a wine glass for mixing liquids. nuance is not allowed. You are free to choose.. as long as you choose red or orange. Choose a side or the consequences are severe. Tyranny within a society is the deliberate removal of nuance.

In this animation we continue the journey of numbered wine glasses, their heads filled with wine, or juice, or blood.. or ideology. In this installment of the series, the Machine is a great dispenser of these liquids. Each glass will grow with tribal enlightenment. But one glass, a curious fellow with a spring in his step, has the tenacity to mix two different liquids. At first this proves empowering as he whips and morphs himself to heights the others have not reached.. but the victory is short lived. The Machine reacts in alarm, and destroys the nuanced glass with brutality and precision. When the dust settles, the Machine gets back to the cycle of filling up glasses, but never mixing contents.
Director's notes:
For the first time ever, I’m going to publish this cartoon directly to Youtube instead of premiering at a film festival. That said, I am sending it out to my festival network post-premiere, so I'm hoping it will be in competition early next year (the film festival submission process happens months in advance). Please feel free to ask questions in the comments, I read every comment, and respond to those that are thoughtful or insightful.
This short film was drawn frame by frame using a Wacom Cintiq drawing tablet, in Adobe Animate. I also used Photoshop and After effects extensively. Since I'm a traditional animator, I still draw every frame. My process is straightforward, I construct a storyboard, build an animatic (which is a storyboard that is timed and rendered as a watchable movie). And then animate each shot individually. Those individual shots are put together with the background in After Effects (which is the modern day camera). I miss drawing directly on paper, but the process of scanning and coloring thousands of drawings took a very long time.

I’ve always loved old cartoons from the 30’s, and I’ve always wanted to make a tribute to the rubber hose style of that era, which I'm happy to see popular with games like Cuphead and Bendy. “Find Yourself” is a short animation I drew over the course of a week, it explores a cycle of self discovery. In this story a Bendy type 1930's character smashes the ceiling, symbolizing the process of discovering something about yourself, and moving to the next level. I used this story device in a slightly different way when I made "Ithaca Shores" music video. I hope you enjoy this animated short.

In a dark factory setting, a group of mind numbed people are subjected to a machine that sucks out any perception of happiness. When a misfit is rejected from the process, he is cast down to the underworld where he meets like minded and life filled people. Their light and color is infectious, and they rise from their dungeon to free those afflicted by the machine.. much to the dismay of the tyrannical overseer.
In this music video I brought back the main character from my film "Pour 585" to act as the tyrannical overseer to an assembly line to exerts it's thought sucking process to drain the inhabitants of this dark world. The sole reject is cast down to join the other misfits, who ultimately save the victims of the machine. It was an interesting story to draw, many thanks to Wantaways!
One of my favorite things to draw is imagery to music. Music can be a very visual medium if you close your eyes and allow the melody and lyrics to paint a mental picture. What I do is visually translate that image into animation, and often times a story writes itself. For example, this story, about a misfit in a world of conformists. I borrowed a few reoccurring concepts from my other films, namely, PITTARI, which had a character's head shape that fit into a boulder. The "Assembly" line feel which I used in my film MASKS https://youtu.be/7KS2Cl0s65A and there are plenty other themes that I keep coming back to.. themes that are just stuck in my head and I have to revisit, re-formulate, and articulate in subtle and not so subtle ways. Excerpt from "Beyond Noh" an animated film that rhythmically animates thousands of individual masks from all over the world, beginning with the distinctive masks of the Japanese Noh theater and continuing on a cultural journey through ritual, utility, deviance, and politics.
Beyond Noh is a film that brings worldwide cultures together. Whether used in ritual, for protection, performance, or simply for fun, masks have many meanings in human society. Animated from 3,475 individual masks and touching on politics, gender, religion and consumerism, this rhythmic film uncovers similarity in our diversity.
Director Bio:
Patrick Smith is known for his metaphorical hand drawn short films, as well as his experimental stop motion films. His formative years were spent as a storyboard artist for Walt Disney, and animation director for MTV. Smith is a member of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, and a fellow of the New York Foundation of the Arts.

This animated short film is about a kid who takes a sip of a mysterious green liquid, which causes a reaction that allows him to discover a universe of personalities, all dwelling within himself. A second sip releases another torrent, more drastic than the first, but this time in reverse order. We are left with the exhausted host, the personalities now all dormant. As he stumbles away, the triggering liquid gives off a few extra carbonated bubbles, until another semi-unwilling host approaches. This film is the first time was meet this blonde haired kid, who also appeared in "Puppet" several years later.
Director Notes:
Created to illustrate a variety of multiple personas that can inhabit the individual, many of the characters are drawn from my personal life experience, and are perhaps a bit cryptic. This was the first film I ever made, and it can be difficult to digest decades later.. both in content and technical execution. I created this film while working at MTV, after hours and in the mornings while directing "Daria" and "Downtown" during the day. I remember the time well, waking up at 6am to get a few hours of work in before heading off to MTV. Those were awesome days in New York City, one of the best era's of my career. The production was halted 3/4 way in, when I decided to travel to Indonesia for several months. When I got back I added a few additional characters including the Balinese "Kecak" dancer. I finally completed this in 2000, to a modest festival reception. It did, however, get shortlisted for an Oscar, after qualifying via "Spike and Mike's Festival of Twisted Animation", who had purchased the film. I owe Spike a debt of gratitude to this day for believing in me and promoting this film. "Drink" was quickly followed up with "Delivery", "Handshake", "Puppet" and a few other hand drawn films, all done with a pencil on paper. My last film to be done with way was "Masks" in 2011. Currently, I work exclusively on the Wacom Cintiq.. I do miss paper though. Perhaps some day I'll go back.

A musical story featuring sea monsters, robots, and a tiny controller person being pursued by mysterious horned leviathans. Through a sudden and disastrous crash into the ceiling of the sky, he emerges from his imaginary island contraption, clamoring though a shattered hole, and sees the world in a new way, void of the creatures that haunted him. Directors note: In this animation I re-introduced an iconic character I first created for my film "Masks", I see this little pale pulp-like character as a visceral representation of our inner fragility, innocence, and honesty that is slowly buried into our inner core as we proceed through our mature lives. This character is a good storytelling tool as I attempt to illustrate the visual interpretations of our learning, struggles, and suffering.. and sometimes joyful victory over personal strife and confusion. The robot, conversely, is a symbol of lifelessness, of dry utility.. a vehicle. I believe this was the first time I included any type of a non-organic character. I hope you like the film. I can't thank Jay enough for giving me the opportunity to draw this piece, guided by his emotionally charged track of music.

Animated by Patrick Smith, this bizarre visualization of peculiar stitched up grey people who occupy a dark rhythmic world, where they carry the earth strapped to their backs and participate in a morphing choreography interlaced with TNT, wooden swords, and stretchy movements. Remixed to the brilliant retro hip hop music of Otis Mcdonald.

This animated short tells the story of Masked men who exploit an edible smaller species, while a renegade scientist perfects a cloning process to satisfy the hungry demand, but the clones conceal a destructive secret. It's a story of exploitation, destruction, and eventual revenge and a twisted sort of justice.
