Centered around the Come Follow Me curriculum for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. But we don't stick to the manual. We believe in an expansive and love centered gospel of Jesus Christ that includes all of God's children just as they are. No judgement, just love and mercy. What is a stonecatcher? One who catches stones of judgement thrown by others. As Elder Renlund said: "Not throwing stones is the first step in treating others with compassion. The second step is to try to catch stones thrown by others."

Dieter F. Uchtdorf (iron gate):
“...as good as our previous experience may be, if we stop asking questions, stop thinking, stop pondering, we can thwart the revelations of the Spirit...We can block the growth and knowledge our Heavenly Father intends for us. How often has the Holy Spirit tried to tell us something we needed to know but couldn't get past the massive iron gate of what we thought we already knew?”

“"Every time someone says something that is hurtful or makes you doubt what you're doing, just remind yourself: I know how to receive personal revelation for myself and for my family."
God knows you. He knows your situation. He knows your heart. Trust in the Lord, learn to hear His voice, and then go forward with confidence and relief.”

“Be Thou an Example of the Believers”
Paul has some beautiful teachings on faith and grace. We’ll discuss what it means to have “faith unfeigned” and the two keys Paul gives to avoid a “shipwreck of faith” (or we would say in modern terms, a “faith crisis”).
Unfortunately, this letter to Timothy isn’t all good. Paul has some backwards views on women and their role in the church. (Actually, and I forgot to mention this in the podcast, this could potentially be easily explained by the fact that most biblical scholars don’t think Paul actually wrote these letters, but that they were written after his death by someone else in his name. This could explain why the misogynistic parts of 1 Timothy 2 don’t align with other things Paul said and did). But no matter who wrote them, we’ll discuss them.

1 Corinthians 1–7
“Be Perfectly Joined Together”
Paul’s first letter to the Corinthians includes some powerful teachings about unity in diversity and a profound, but too often misunderstood truth, that we are the temple of God. Although I don’t believe this verse has anything to do with modesty or chastity, we’ll discuss those topics as well since they are bound to come up in YW and YM this weekend. We also take on another of the clobber passages found in Paul’s writings, including a discussion of Paul’s overall s3xual ethic.

“A Minister and a Witness”
In these chapters we read Paul’s defense several times (given to different audiences). He testifies that he believes everything in the law and the prophets. But how do we reconcile that belief with what he teaches that goes AGAINST what is in the Hebrew Bible? Like circumcision, dietary laws, and spending time with Gentiles. Acts 6–9
“What Wilt Thou Have Me to Do?”
These chapters in Acts contain one of my favorite stories. First we’ll discuss how members of the Christian movement did the right thing by making changes within the church from the bottom-up, rather than waiting for the apostles to make the change. We’ll meet (and unfortunately say goodbye to) Stephen. But first he teaches powerfully. His murder by stoning is brought about because of his teachings about the temple and the law, which is an applicable lesson for us today. Then we pick up with Philip in the desert where he meets a Eunuch from Ethiopia reading Isaiah on his way home from Jerusalem, where he was likely rejected when trying to enter the temple to worship. And we’ll meet Saul / Paul who, as we know, we’ll be instrumental in taking the gospel to the gentiles.

“He Is Risen”
This week for Come Follow Me we read and study the events immediately following Jesus' crucifixion and burial. We’ll discuss how women were the first to the tomb, the first to see angels, and the first to see the Risen Christ. Jesus (or angels, depending on which gospel account you read) told these women to go and tell the apostles that He was risen. We’ll talk about their tragic response to the women and how we sometimes make the same mistake in our day. We’ll also talk about the touching exchange between Jesus and Peter at the sea of Galilee. Jesus tells Peter exactly how to show love for Jesus–by feeding, loving, and caring for others.

Joseph Smith Matthew; Matthew 24-25; Mark 12-13; Luke 21
Matthew 25 contains the last 3 parables that Jesus gave during His mortal ministry. Because the Come Follow Me reading also includes some discussion of signs of the second coming, we’ll have a quick discussion about those before jumping into these final three (and extremely POWERFUL) parables that Jesus gives about what will happen when He returns. I believe these parables, especially the last two, really sum up what the gospel of Jesus Christ is all about.

“What Lack I Yet?”
Once again these chapters are packed with powerful lessons and parables from Jesus. We’ll discuss his comments about marriage (which are really just about divorce) as well as his acknowledgement of sexual minorities. We’ll also analyze his response to the rich young ruler regarding his question of how to obtain eternal life and which commandments are required to be kept in order to do so.

“Rejoice with Me; for I Have Found My Sheep Which Was Lost”
This week’s come follow me reading contains 6 powerful parables with important lessons. The most well known parable in these chapters is likely The Prodigal Son, and it is one of my favorites. But the other 5 parables also have powerful lessons that are important for us to discuss and can even help us understand the Prodigal Son better. John 11 is where we read about the miraculous raising of Lazurus from the dead, but we’ll touch on some often overlooked lessons from this miracle as well.

“What Shall I Do to Inherit Eternal Life?”
This lesson includes two of my favorite parables--the unmerciful servant and the good samaritan. But I think the questions that draw these teachings out from Jesus Christ help us understand even better what Jesus is teaching. But before we discuss those things, we'll talk about what (in my opinion) it really means to become like a little child. I, probably like many of you, was taught that this at least included unquestioning obedience to church authority--children just do what their parents say, no questions asked.
One of these parables even includes the answer to what we need to do to obtain eternal life. A pretty important question!

“Who Hath Ears to Hear, Let Him Hear”
This week we are focused on the parables of Jesus. These are used by Jesus to teach us about the Kingdom of God or the Kingdom of Heaven. We can learn so much from these stories designed to teach. Unfortunately, some of these parables are often wielded as weapons to tell individuals or groups of people who will and who will not be part of the Kingdom of Heaven, but when we do that we not only miss the point, but actually put ourselves in the the position of being ‘last’ because we think we are ‘first’.

Quote from Rabbi Kushner’s Book:
“God does not cause our misfortunes. Some are caused by bad luck, some are caused by bad people, and some are simply an inevitable consequence of our being human and being mortal, living in a world of inflexible natural laws. The painful things that happen to us are not punishments for our misbehavior, nor are they in any way part of some grand design on God's part. Because the tragedy is not God's will, we need not feel hurt or betrayed by God when tragedy strikes. We can turn to Him for help in overcoming it, precisely because we can tell ourselves that God is as outraged by it as we are.” Harold S. Kushner, When Bad Things Happen to Good People
This is a talk I gave in sacrament meeting last summer on the topic of how to help others get and stay on the covenant path, specifcially referencing the first point of President Nelson's talk about spiritual momentum. We're taking a break from the Come Follow Me curriculum this week for a few reasons: 1) I was traveling A TON for work this week, 2) I needed a week break for mental health, and 3) No gospel doctrine next week, so seemed like a good time to take a break. Don't worry, this won't become a habit! The talk does still reference 3 stories from the New Testament to help address the topic and answer the question. I hope you enjoy it!

We’ll talk about what we learn from Jesus dining with publicans and sinners, why some asked Him to leave after witnessing miracles, Jesus’ first raising from the dead, the feeding of the 5,000, what it REALLY means to take up our cross, what the scriptures do and do not say about the Mount of Transfiguration, and a beautiful teaching about grace.

“The tradition linked the story of the call of the tax collector with that of the meal which Jesus ate at his home. Such a person was considered ceremonially unclean by jewish standards. The disregard of dietary and cleansing regulations is further evident in that there were present at the same meal other undesirables–as adjudged by the official standards of Judaism–with whom Jesus also enjoyed table fellowship. To eat a meal with someone was considered to be the most intimate kind of personal contact, so that a scrupulous Jew would be extremely careful about the company in which he would share a meal. Jesus, however, has no hesitation about such contacts and , under pressure to account for his lax attitude, justifies what he is doing on the ground that this is a part of the mission that God has sent him to fulfill: I came (i.e. God sent me) not to call the righteous, but sinners. The setting of the story, which pictures Pharisees as witnessing the meal, is probably artificial, but the message is doubtless historical: Jesus saw his messianic mission as calling into the fellowship of God’s people the religious outcasts, rather than as confirming the pridefully righteous in their sense of moral superiority.”

“The point of the Christian life is not to distinguish oneself from the ungodly, but to stand in radical solidarity with everyone and everything else. This is the full, final, and intended effect of the incarnation symbolized by its finality in the cross which is gods great act of solidarity instead of judgment.” Richard Rohr, The Universal Christ

“Most of us understandably start the journey assuming that God is ‘up there’ and our job is to transcend this world to find him. We spend so much time to get ‘up there’, we miss that God’s big leap in Jesus was to come ‘down here’. So much of our worship and religious effort is the spiritual equivalent of trying to go up what has become the down escalator. I suspect that the ‘up there’ mentality is the way most people’s spiritual search has to start. But once the real inner journey begins, once you come to know that in Christ God is forever overcoming the gap between human and divine, the Christian path becomes less about climbing and performance, and more about descending, letting go, and unlearning.
“Knowing and loving Jesus is largely about becoming fully human, wounds and all, instead of ascending spiritually or thinking we can remain unwounded.” Richard Rohr, The Universal Christ
These chapters contain some of my FAVORITE EVENTS from the ministry of Jesus, and they have so many profound lessons. We’ll talk about the healing of the Centurion’s servant and how that teaches us that Jesus values faith more than worthiness. We’ll discuss how some of Jesus’ teachings have been misused to justify terrible actions towards family members who identify as LGBTQ. We discuss what Jesus meant when he taught that the sabbath was made for man, but not man for the Sabbath, the raising of the son of the Widow of Nain, why John the Baptist wondered whether Jesus was actually the promised Messiah, and end with the touching story of the sinful woman bathing Jesus’ feet with her tears and how her faith brought about her forgiveness.

“He Taught Them as One Having Authority”
As we continue our study of Jesus’ Sermon on the Mount, we discuss what it means to do our alms in secret and how to “spread it before the Lord in prayer. We go line-by-line through the Lord’s prayer, an unfortunately neglected scripture in our faith and discuss how what it means to lay up treasure in heaven rather than earth. Chapter 7 includes Jesus’ powerful teachings of not judging, the mote and the beam, and the gate to the path of eternal life. As part of our discussion about this gate, we also discuss what the covenant path is and how we actually stay on it.

The Sermon on the Mount from Matthew and the Sermon on the Plain from Luke contain incredible and powerful teachings of Jesus Christ. While Matthew version, the Sermon on the Mount, is definitely more well known, I think the Sermon on the Plain may be even more potent and powerful. We’ll dive into the teachings of both contained in Matthew 5 and Luke 6, including discussing some hard things as part of this episode.

LDS Come Follow Me: New Testament - February 6-12 - John 2-4 - “Ye Must Be Born Again”
These 3 chapters of John contain some of my favorite stories about the life of Jesus and how we can follow Him–especially the woman of Samaria (or woman at the well). Once again Jesus is showing us how He looks out for the marginalized, even to the confusion of his disciples.
January 30–February 5; Matthew 4; Luke 4–5; “The Spirit of the Lord Is upon Me”
In these chapters, things really start heating up for Jesus' ministry. We discuss a slightly different take on the temptation of Jesus, discuss some of His early miracles in awe, and go in depth as to why the people in His hometown of Nazareth wanted to kill Him after He taught in their synagogue.

Quotes from the Podcast:
Elder D. Todd Christofferson about Zion:
“Remember, “the Lord called his people Zion, because they were of one heart and one mind, and dwelt in righteousness; and there was no poor among them” (Moses 7:18). If we would establish Zion in our homes, branches, wards, and stakes, we must rise to this standard. It will be necessary (1) to become unified in one heart and one mind; (2) to become, individually and collectively, a holy people; and (3) to care for the poor and needy with such effectiveness that we eliminate poverty among us. We cannot wait until Zion comes for these things to happen—Zion will come only as they happen.” Elder D. Todd Christofferson, October 2008 GC
“The only people that Jesus seemed to exclude were precisely those who refused to know they were ordinary sinners like everyone else. The only thing he excluded was exclusion itself.” Richard Rohr, The Universal Christ
