There are many different art business models that artists can use to make money from their work. Some of the most common models include:

Direct to collector: This is the most basic model, where artists sell their work directly to collectors. This can be done through art shows, galleries, online marketplaces, or even their own website.
Gallery sales: This model involves artists working with galleries to sell their work. Galleries typically take a commission on sales, but they can also provide artists with exposure and marketing opportunities.

The amount of money that commission artists make varies depending on a number of factors, including their skill level, the complexity of the work, and the time it takes to complete. According to ZipRecruiter, the average annual pay for a Commission Artist in the United States is $70,894 a year. However, salaries can range from $26,500 to $161,500.

Define your art business goals. What do you want to achieve with your art business? Do you want to sell your art, teach art classes, or both? Once you know your goals, you can start to develop a plan to achieve them.
Identify your target audience. Who are you trying to reach with your art business? Once you know your target audience, you can start to tailor your marketing and promotion efforts to reach them.
Create a strong online presence. This includes having a website, social media accounts, and an online portfolio. Make sure your online presence is consistent and that it showcases your best work.
Develop a marketing plan. How will you reach your target audience? What marketing channels will you use? How much will you spend on marketing? Your marketing plan should be specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound.

I feel tremendously lucky because this week I got to interview an amazing Artist, JoAnne Coughlin Walsh, who I have been following on Instagram for years! Follow JoAnne on Instagram.

With broad brush strokes she creates beach life scenes full of life and motion! Her art is so good and in demand that she is represented by four galleries!

In her interview, JoAnne shares with us about her experience with art shows, fairs and galleries. Listen at the end the story of how JoAnne got her first gallery representation!

JoAnne works full-time as an Art Director for 25 newspapers and several magazines too. Her editorial art is so well-thought-out, it looks effortless and totally on point! JoAnne shares with us how she creates an idea for her editorial art piece from start to finish.

It didn’t occur to JoAnne and I, until the interview that we have actually met in person before at the SCBWI conference in New York several years ago! Small world :)
