In this second episode, Ashley Kirnan and Andrea Burke tell their stories of how they started gardening, share their ideas for gardening in smaller spaces, a little bit about the dentist, and their favorite things for the week!

Recommendations and tips for small scale growing:

  • Make use of vertical space (cucumbers, melons, squash, snap/sweet peas, gourds, climbing flowers)

  • Source good soil locally (if you’re local, feel free to ask for recommendations!)

  • Grow what you will actually eat and what you actually like

  • Rethink how close you plant things together (And could they be planted closer?)

  • Build small raised beds

  • Grow in garden pots on a porch/driveway

  • Grow in a kiddie pool/extra large pot

  • Take notes every year and really get to know the best place to grow in order to not waste garden space

  • Plant seasonally and reuse space throughout the season (pull spring crops and use that space for the fall garden)

  • Utilize local farmers
