Welcome! This is a documentary travel podcast that follows Bob's life as an American Actor, Filmmaker, and Travel Blogger. His journey (so far) includes navigating a global pandemic throughout Europe, surviving a devastating earthquake in Croatia, exploring small town beauty in the Yorkshire area of north England, and living on an island (hammock included!) in the blue waters of the Adriatic Sea. Bob made a huge change, later in his life, to explore Europe and pursue a passion from his younger years // a passion for acting, filmmaking, and travel. So his new life chapter began on January 1, 2020. What could possibly go wrong? Each month you’ll hear his stories, thoughts, and breakthrough moments along the journey so far. He’ll share bonus episodes of his interesting European experiences and life-changing insights that may be helpful to others. If you’ve ever felt like you want to make a major change in your life, but think it may be too late, or you’re too old, or there’s too much uncertainty right now - my documentary journey may appeal to you.

Are you an expat… or an immigrant in Portugal?
In this episode of Life Abroad in Portugal, I explore a question that sounds simple — but carries more meaning than most people expect. As more people move to Portugal on visas like the D7, the language we use to describe ourselves starts to matter.
Is there really a difference between an expat and an immigrant? Or is it just perception?
I share my own thoughts after going through the residency process, building a life here, and starting to see this question in a new way. This isn’t about labels — it’s about intention, mindset, and how we choose to live in a country that isn’t where we started.
If you’re moving to Portugal, living here already, or thinking about what it means to belong somewhere new, this episode offers a thoughtful perspective on a topic people don’t always say out loud.

Making friends in Portugal isn’t always easy — and for many people moving abroad, it can feel surprisingly lonely.
In this episode of Life Abroad in Portugal, I share my experience building a real group of friends after relocating, and what actually worked for me. From stepping outside my comfort zone to starting my own Meetup groups, this is a practical, honest look at how friendships really form in a new country.
I talk about why this can be challenging, especially as an adult, and why waiting for friendships to happen rarely works. Instead, creating opportunities — whether by joining groups or starting your own — can completely change the experience.
What helped me most:
• Starting a filmmaking Meetup around something I genuinely love
• Creating a simple monthly expat Meetup in my neighborhood
• Joining an existing business group
• Showing up consistently over time
If you’re living in Portugal or planning your move and wondering how to build a social life here, this episode offers real, actionable insight.
You’re not alone — and with a little intention, it gets better.

I just received my Portugal D7 residence permit card — and I’m already thinking ahead to renewal.
In this episode of Life Abroad in Portugal, I share the four things I’m focusing on over the next two years to help ensure my residency renewal goes as smoothly as the process of getting the card did.
Renewal isn’t something you scramble for at the last minute. It’s really about how you live during your residency period.
I talk about the four principles guiding me moving forward:
• Meeting Portugal’s physical presence requirements (6 consecutive or 8 non-consecutive months each year)
• Using my NIF number and participating actively in the Portuguese economy
• Paying my fair share of Portuguese taxes
• Being a responsible, law-abiding resident
If you’re living in Portugal on a D7 visa or any residence permit, this mindset can make the renewal process much less stressful.
Getting the card isn’t the end of the journey — it’s the beginning of building a life here responsibly.

If you’ve ever compared your Portugal residency timeline to someone else’s and felt anxious, frustrated, or behind — this episode is for you.
In this episode of Life Abroad in Portugal, I talk about why comparing timelines is one of the fastest ways to lose peace during the immigration process. Same visa. Same office. Same timing — wildly different outcomes.
I explain why this happens, why it’s normal, and how to stay grounded when forums, comments, and social media make everything feel urgent and chaotic.
If you’re waiting, wondering, or questioning whether something went wrong — this conversation will help you reset your expectations and breathe again.

Getting your Portuguese residency card feels like the finish line — but what happens after that moment is rarely talked about.
In this episode of Life Abroad in Portugal, I reflect on the quiet phase that follows the paperwork, the waiting, and the urgency. This is the moment when life slows down, routines form, and the move becomes real.
If you’ve recently received your residency card — or you’re imagining what that moment will feel like — this episode explores why the calm afterward matters more than people expect, and how to let it work for you instead of against you.

Six weeks after my AIMA appointment, I finally received my Portuguese residency permit card — and in this episode, I share exactly how it happened.
From the unexpected phone call (and why it almost went wrong), to navigating the AIMA office and finally holding my card in hand, I walk you through the final steps of the residency process that often cause the most anxiety — and are rarely explained clearly.
I also share key lessons about patience, timelines, language barriers, and why everyone’s experience is different, even with the same visa.
If you’re in the middle of the process right now, this episode is for you.
You’re closer than you think.

My much-anticipated AIMA appointment has been postponed! Instead of August, I’ll now be waiting until the end of October. It’s also been moved to Porto, not Viana do Castelo. Getting ready for my AIMA appointment meant double-checking every detail—bank statements, proof of income, lease agreement, and even my boarding pass. Thankfully, my consultant caught a small address issue before it could become a big headache. The meeting’s in Viana do Castelo, about an hour from Porto, so I’m making it an overnight trip. After months of waiting, it finally happened — my Portuguese visa was approved! Mother Teresa and Albania
A quiet moment in Tirana: a mural of Mother Teresa stopped me in my tracks.
Painted with grace and strength, her presence felt like peace in the middle of the city. No guidebook could’ve prepared me for that feeling. Just one of those travel moments that lingers.
President Woodrow Wilson
One of the most unexpected sights in Tirana is a statue of U.S. President Woodrow Wilson — top hat and all — standing proudly in the center of the city. It turns out that after World War I, Wilson played a key role in defending Albania’s independence at the Paris Peace Conference. The country never forgot. It's one of those fascinating travel moments that reminds you just how interconnected our histories really are.

MARCH 2025
Hey everyone—checking in from Albania! This month’s been a bit of a whirlwind. I finally moved into my new place in Porto (which felt amazing), but then had to leave Portugal until my visa is approved. Cue the Great Travel Shuffle: Porto > Madrid > Tirana > Frankfurt > US > Frankfurt > Porto. So. Many. Flights.
But you know what? Tirana—and especially the Blloku neighborhood—continues to surprise me. It's my third time here and there's always more history to discover. From strong espressos and people-watching to powerful pieces of history tucked around every corner, it’s been a unique little chapter.
In this episode, I’m talking about the highs, the hectic moments, the history, and what it’s like living out of a suitcase while craving a little stillness. If you’ve ever felt that mix of wanderlust and wanting to just hang your clothes up for once—you’ll get it.

Former Residence of Enver Hoxha
Right in the heart of Tirana is a quiet villa that once belonged to Enver Hoxha, Albania’s longtime communist leader. For decades, the entire area around it—now known as Blloku—was completely off-limits, guarded by police and secret agents. It was basically a wall-less fortress for the regime’s elite, hidden in plain sight. Today, it’s one of the city’s liveliest neighborhoods, but that history still lingers.
Postbllok Memorial
One of the most powerful spots in Tirana is the Postbllok Memorial—a small but impactful installation created by former political prisoner Fatos Lubonja and artist Ardian Isufi. It features concrete beams from Spaç Prison, part of a military bunker, and a piece of the Berlin Wall gifted by the city of Berlin. Each element tells a story of Albania’s past under dictatorship and its long road to freedom.

JANUARY 2025
It’s a new year and a new season for the podcast! A big thanks to those of you who tune in regularly and those who drop by for an episode that catches your interest.
This year is shaping up to be different—probably less travel and more focus on settling into life in Porto, Portugal. But that doesn’t mean I’ve stopped exploring! I kicked off the year by heading south to the Algarve, trading Porto’s northern charm for the beach vibes of Portimão. And let me tell you—the contrast between the two couldn’t be more striking.
Being here has made me realize just how connected I feel to Porto. Portimão is beautiful, especially Praia da Rocha beach, and I can only imagine how packed it gets in the summer. But for me? It’s a great place to visit—not home.
This month wasn’t just about travel, though. I tackled some big visa-related tasks—getting fingerprints done at the U.S. Embassy in Lisbon, opening a bank account, and moving through the process step by step. It’s exciting, a little nerve-wracking, but all part of the adventure.

SEPTEMBER 2024
This month, I’m diving into my first impressions of Istanbul. The flight from Manchester, UK was a breeze, but getting settled was a marathon—long drives, airport chaos, and finding my Airbnb with its 137 steps (hello, daily leg workout!). But the sea view? Totally worth it.
Istanbul’s got this incredible vibe, split between its bustling European side and the laid-back Asian side. I’ve been exploring Istiklal Avenue’s lively energy, enjoying Turkish ice cream (dondurma), and soaking in the views from the Galata Tower. Navigating the language barrier has been an adventure in itself, but that’s all part of the fun, right?
There’s still so much to see and do, like booking a boat cruise to explore more of the city. Stick around as I share more stories, tips, and a few laughs from my time in this incredible place. Trust me, you won’t want to miss it!

In the latest episode of my podcast, I bid a temporary farewell to Portugal, leaving behind the sunny streets of Lisbon but carrying cherished memories with my filmmaking group. Before my departure, I took time to explore two beloved nearby destinations: the magical allure of Sintra and the coastal charm of Cascais, reminiscent of California. Now, I find myself in rainy Manchester, England, where my journey seamlessly continues. Embracing acting opportunities, I've already landed roles in two student films, including one where I battle monsters and another as a detective. A day trip to Halifax offers picturesque train rides and a chance to update my actor headshots. Settling into my new Airbnb, just a short tram ride from the city center, I'm finding comfort in routine and local coffee shops while eagerly anticipating the adventures that lie ahead in this new chapter. FEBRUARY 2024
Welcome to my February podcast, broadcasting live from Lisbon where the weather has been delightful, marked by sunny days occasionally interrupted by refreshing rain showers. Nestled in a cozy Airbnb, conveniently situated for optimal productivity, I've found the perfect base for my creative endeavors.
Undoubtedly, the highlight of my trip has been my engagement with a local filmmaking group. Fueled by my passion to contribute both on and off-screen, I've embraced every opportunity to immerse myself in the creative process. Amidst occasional touristy exploits, such as leisurely explorations of Lisbon's charm and a memorable visit to the awe-inspiring Sanctuary of Cristo Rei in Almada, I've relished the chance to witness the city's beauty and contribute to its vibrant cultural scene.

Cristo Rei (Christ the King)
The Cristo Rei statue was built in response to a vow made by Portugal's Catholic bishops in 1940, during World War II, to construct a monument to Christ if the country remained neutral throughout the conflict. After Portugal emerged unscathed, the bishops kept their promise, and construction began in 1951.

DECEMBER 2023
As the year draws to a close, I find myself back in Lisbon, reminiscing about the events of 2023. While my Airbnb experience hit a snag, a move to Estoril, Portugal, brought a satisfying resolution. Unlike my last visit in 2020/2021 when the Christmas Markets were shuttered, this time they're bustling with festive energy, brimming with delectable food, lively tunes, and, of course, the comforting aroma of Mulled Wine. Reconnecting with my cherished MeetUp Groups centered on filmmaking and an elegant Supper Club adds an extra layer of delight to my return.

So, I just went from a small town near the Adriatic Sea up to Tirana, the capital city of the country. What a change! I'm fully embracing it and really enjoying it.
I'm staying in a wonderful neighborhood called Blloku. The Blloku neighborhood is a vibrant area that has undergone significant transformation in recent years. Originally a restricted zone during the communist era, reserved for government officials and party elites, Blloku has evolved into a bustling hub of trendy cafes, restaurants, shops, and nightlife. It is now a symbol of Tirana's modernization and a popular destination for locals and tourists alike. The best part is that it's within walking distance to my favorite coffeeshops, my gym, and all the monuments you need to see!

As summer slowly comes to a close here in Yorkshire, it's been an absolute blast! These past few months have been a delightful mix of adventure, discovery, and happiness. This marks my third English summer, and I must say, I'm feeling right at home. The weather has been quite agreeable. There's been a good balance of a few warm days but mainly consistently pleasant cool temperatures and a good bit of rain. Along the way, I've strengthened my bonds with friends, fellow actors, and folks in the industry, and honestly, I couldn't have asked for a better experience.
Throughout most of this month, I've had the joy of discovering the captivating history and beauty that's all around me, with no day train trips. There's an array of things to see and do here in Leeds, making it an incredibly enjoyable time overall.

The north England cities of Leeds, Manchester, and Liverpool are very different from each other. I've spent time in all three, and they all have positives and a few negatives.

Hello! It is so good to be back in Europe! After an easy, breezy New Year's Eve flight, I'm all settled in Athens, Greece.
My Airbnb is nice, modern, and safe. It's located in the Patission neighborhood, in the northern part of Athens. The area has everything I need within walking distance, but I need more "city-center energy", so I take the metro every day to the heart of the city. The metro is efficient and not very expensive!
So far, I've joined a co-working space, a gym, and got a pay-as-you-go phone plan! My first day ended with a visit to a rooftop bar, gazing at the Acropolis and Parthenon, and watching the sunset. Day two was spent getting to know the city better by just relaxing on the Hop-On, Hop-Off Bus Tour.
There is so much to do here, and I can't wait to start exploring!

Angelo is the Ouzo King! I stopped by his shop (The Greek Shop) and got quite an education on the ouzo culture in Greece. Ouzo is the National Drink of Greece, and Angelo explains to me the proper and customary way to drink it.
His ouzo comes from the islands of Chios, Lesbos, and Samos - and also north and middle Greece. All his flavors are in the 40% to 45% proof range.
I loved drinking it chilled, and sampled an ouzo from Northern Greece that I ended up purchasing. This anise-flavored liquor consists of pure ethyl alcohol and made from grape or grain, and distilled with aniseed.
