Relationships are like a kaleidoscope — lots of little shapes in lots of colours that blend together in sometimes beautiful, sometimes uncomfortable ways. They’re complicated, with different personalities and different expectations, and for most of us, negotiating all of that is tough.
Ever wondered why you find yourself more drawn to certain ‘types’ of partners? This week on Reloscope: The Relationships Science Insights Podcast, host Marie Stella is joined by dating coach and expert Julia Malakiman to investigate the culprits behind this phenomenon.
Based in San Jose, California, Julia Malakiman works with individuals who struggle with forming relationships and having confidence in their romantic life. Working primarily with men who are hoping to overcome anxiety and their people-pleasing perfectionist tendencies, Julia Malakiman’s coaching program has amassed a plethora of glowing reviews.
In this episode, Julia Malakiman addresses the misconception that people in the dating market are seeking high looks, good income, and occupation, asserting that most people look for something much deeper in healthy long-term relationships: communication.
Together, Marie and Julia Malakiman examine the media's depiction of romance, and deconstruct the factors that construct our perceptions of romantic relationships. So, whether you’re looking for expert advice on wading through the dating world, or simply an avenue for self-reflection, tune in this week for a thought-provoking episode!

Compatibility hinges on speaking the same love language: trying to win a ‘words of affirmation’ enthusiast with a bouquet of roses is like reciting Shakespeare to a dog—it won’t quite hit the mark. As such, understanding and aligning your partner’s love languages can do wonders for the relationship.
In this week’s episode of Reloscope: The Relationships Science Insights Podcast, host Marie Stella is joined by relationships and couples counselor Jill Robin Payne, to unravel the significance of love languages in a relationship.
Jill’s insights have graced radio waves and television screens, and on top of it all, she’s a published author with a book on reciprocal communication to her name. She currently resides in vibrant Houston, Texas, where she operates a private practice and shares her life with her husband, Byron, and her son, Taylor.
Together, Marie and Jill explore the importance of love languages and how they relate to romantic compatibility, shedding light on common misconceptions and challenges couples face in the process. That aside, Jill addresses the possibility of love languages evolving over time and offers guidance on recognizing and respecting each other’s preferences.
So, tune in to this enlightening episode and get ready to dive into the heart of what makes or breaks a relationship.

What does violence look like in a romantic relationship? Does it always go through physical violence, or could it be something mental too? How do we identify signs of dating violence?
In this episode of Reloscope: The Relationships Science Insights Podcast, host Aditi Kutty dives deep into this topic with Dr. Monica Kearney, or Dr. K for short.
She received her Ph.D. in Counseling Psychology from the University of Maryland, College Park. As a doctoral candidate, her research focused on the relationship between gender roles and dating violence and college students’ abilities to recognize warning signs of dating violence.
Currently, she is conducting research to encourage undergraduate students to engage in social justice and advocacy within their communities. Dr. K. has taught classes centering on the development of basic helping skills, the psychology of women, understanding multiculturalism from a psychological perspective, and understanding the experiences of men, the concept of masculinity, and the impact of gender roles and other social identities on mental health.
Dr. K. serves on the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee within the Department of Psychology at the University of Maryland. In this role, she has co-led several workshops for faculty members at the University on decentering whiteness from their courses and addressing microaggressions in the classroom.
In 2022, Dr. K. received the College of Behavioral and Social Science (BSOS) Excellence in Teaching Award, the BSOS Excellence in Diversity and Inclusion Award, the Social Justice Alliance Instructor of the Year Award, and the Department of Psychology’s Student Choice Award. Dr. K shares how we can identify signs of dating violence, violence effects on a romantic relationship, and best practices to avoid dating violence from happening or go away from dating violence when we have a relationship.

Within your family system, you discover more discover more about relationships and yourself. Sometimes, this learning can serve you in adulthood, and sometimes what you’ve learned is maladaptive for adulthood.

It has become her life’s mission to serve as many people as possible, helping individuals untangle sexual scripts that block them from getting what they want.

Are you unhappy because you're in a bad relationship, or are you unhappy because you're in a monogamous one? Monogamy tends to be the default in our society, but it's not the only option, nor is it the best for everyone. Identifying our bonding style helps not only to understand your own needs, but how you fit into a relationship, in choosing the right partner, and in realising that you are worthy of love.
On this episode of Reloscope: The Relationships Science Insights Podcast, host Aditi Kutty is joined by Dr. Elisabeth Sheff, Dr. Elisabeth “Eli” Sheff is a researcher, expert witness, coach, speaker, and educational consultant. With a PhD in Sociology and certification as a Sexuality Educator from AASECT, Dr. Eli specializes in gender and sexual minority families, consensual non-monogamy, and kink/BDSM. Sheff is the foremost academic expert on polyamorous families with children, and her 25+ year Polyamorous Family Study is the only longitudinal study of poly families with children to date. Dr. Eli has served as faculty at the University of Colorado, the University of Montana, Georgia State University, the University of Tennessee, Oglethorpe, Emory, and the University of Zurich.
Dr. Eli joins Aditi to chat about The Bonding Project, a quiz they designed with other experts in the feel that allows us to understand our preferred bonding styles. They delve into how attachment styles and bonding styles intersect, and why there isn't one model for every relationship. You can take quiz yourself herehttps://www.bondingproject.com/.

Sex is usually seen as merely physical activity. In English, we have the phrase 'making love', which implies an emotional connection, but that connection is usually seen as separate from the act of sex itself. Why is it important to destroy this misconception, and how does sexual intimacy affect our personal growth and relationships?
On this episode of Reloscope: The Relationships Science Insights Podcast, host Aditi Kutty is joined by Dr. Susan Kaye, a sexual well-being specialist with a Ph.D. in Human Sexuality. They unpack what sexual intimacy really means, with the "into me see" method: share with me, and help me share myself with you. They also chat about how attachment styles can help avoid triggers and setbacks in a relationship, as well as the importance of emotional availability. Dr Susan Kaye has 30 years of experience as a somatic practitioner, beginning in 1985 when she worked and studied with the sex research team of Masters & Johnson. She has expertise as a tantra teacher, bodywork practitioner, massage therapist, and yoga instructor. She also has 20 years of working in the sexual health field as a sexologist, sex coach, and sex educator.
Susan believes that offering clients total mind-body wellness is essential to connecting them with talk therapists as well as somatic experts to support them to embody fully the mind-body healing they are seeking. Susan is available for the Supervision of mental health providers, somatic arts practitioners, and medical personnel.
