Faith In An Uncertain World (Week 3) - Habakkuk 3v1-19 - Habakkuk chapter 3 is a prayer that can be our prayer when we find ourselves in a world of injustice. It is a prayer that remembers who God is and trusts that He is at work. It is a prayer that speaks of hope in spite of what is happening around us because of a resolute faith that God will make things right in HIs time. It encapsulates ch 2:4 of what it means for the righteous to live by faith - to stay the course regardless of the difficulty around us.

Faith In An Uncertain World (Week 2) - Habakkuk 2v2-2v20 - Habakkuk’s concern in the first chapter is that God is using a people more wicked than Israel to bring judgment. How can God be ok with this? In the second chapter God responds to Habakkuk, stating that all will be held to account for what they have done. In particular He announces 5 woes on Babylon for their wicked and sinful ways (Economic Evil, Unjust Power, Violence, Immorality, Idolatry). These woes are a sobering reminder of God’s holiness and that how we conduct ourselves individually and corporately matters.

Faith In An Uncertain World (Week 1) - Habakkuk 1v1-2v1 - The book of Habakkuk is a conversation between the prophet and God, centred around the prophet’s dismay at the injustice and violence he sees among his own people. Is God paying attention? What will He do about it? This sermon reminds us that God’s justice is sometimes brought about through unlikely sources but that He is still paying attention and will hold everyone to account.

Life in the Mess (Week 3) - Ephesians 4v30-5v2 - There are many bad models of forgiveness that often capture a small portion of the practice, but usually are missing the whole view from scripture. Forgiveness is one step, albeit a very important one, in the process of reconciliation, and to skip any of the steps would shortchange the model God has given us.

Life in the Mess (Week 2) - Matt 18v21-35 - Scripture teaches us a lot about forgiveness! In our calling to model forgiveness like Christ, we understand that it is only possible by being rooted in Him. Forgiveness as a movement towards peace is for everyone towards everyone and tied to our own relationship with God. Not only did God model forgiveness but Jesus also taught us how to confront each other when an offence has occurred.

Life in the Mess (Week 1) - 2 Cor 5:14-21 - We live in a broken world with messy relationships and a cheapening of the concept of forgiveness. Christians are to forgive others as modelled by God’s forgiveness, a relational practice that requires us to shift looking at others as God does. We are invited to participate in God’s reconciliation of the world through the practice of forgiveness.

Vision: Inside/Out (Week 2) - Romans 12:1-2 - The invitation to belong to Jesus is a matter of grace but it does invite us to be changed as a result. Paul opens this rich chapter of Romans but reminding us of God’s great mercy and how it ought to propel us forward to becoming the kind of people He intended for us to be by giving ourselves over to Him completely, body, mind and spirit.

Vision: Inside/Out (Week 1) - Mark 2:1-12 - In this, one of Mark’s first recorded miracles of Jesus, we find a group of friends committed to helping their paralyzed friend. Jesus is drawn into their collective faith, from which He responds. The critical piece of the healing is also Jesus challenging the religious assumptions of His day, as He shows both a power to forgive sins as well as a power over physical brokenness. This story encapsulates our series, that faith in Jesus begins on the inside but will eventually bear fruit on the outside.

Psalms of the Summer (Week 10) - Psalm 34 - This is a psalm which tells the story of God’s past goodness. He has been paying attention and has been attentive in the past and this is who He still is. This is a psalm that rejoices in God’s goodness and provision. In the middle of the psalm is a description of who we are to be as His people.

Psalms of the Summer (Week 6) - Psalm 100 - This is a psalm of praise and thanksgiving which reminds us that He is God. We respond to who He is with joy and praise knowing that we belong to Him.
Psalms of the Summer (Week 5) - Psalm 15 - The psalmist asks the question of who can come into God’s presence. The list of attributes given is daunting - a high calling and necessary reminder of God’s perfection and holiness. But in the places where we inevitably fall short, we find His mercy waiting for us in Jesus.

Into this good creation He has also placed humanity to rule over it and steward it according to His plan. Psalms of the Summer (Week 1) - Psalm 85 - Canada Day can be a day that is a paradox for many. It is a day when we can genuinely give thanks for our freedom and for the country in which we live. On the other hand, it is hard not to be reminded of parts of our nation’s past where we have participated in oppression and hatred. Psalm 85 is a psalm which acts as a prayer of Israel to God asking that He remember them and restore them as His people. It likewise can be a prayer for us and our nation that we would again be a place of justice and righteousness and know God’s favour and blessing.

What's Next (The Book of Acts) (Week 10) - Acts 8:26-40 - The story of Philip and the Ethiopian eunuch displays the fact that Christ has come to bring all people to the Father and that the manner by which He wants to work is in the faithfulness of His servants. Philip is shown as one who listens to the Spirit’s leading and in doing so is used to bring others to Jesus.

So... What's Next (The Book of Acts) (Week 9) - Acts 8:4-25 - The book of Acts reveals that many of the things that plague the Christian faith today are not new issues. Where the Gospel is proclaimed and the Spirit brings about powerful change there are those who wish to acquire such influence for their own gain. The story of Simon the sorcerer acts as both a warning to be on guard for this as well as a reminder that God’s work in our life is the result of grace and not merit. Therefore we ought to carry ourselves with humility.

So... What's Next (The Book of Acts) (Week 8) - Acts 6:8-8:3 - The mission of God will eventually bump up against the powers of the world and meet conflict. Here in the story of Stephen we meet the first Christian martyr, whose devotion to the resurrected Jesus is stronger than his fear of death. We meet Saul who will go on to be used by God despite his rocky beginning and the church is scattered beyond Jerusalem as God’s Spirit pushes them further outward.

So... What's Next (The Book of Acts) (Week 7) - Acts 6:1-7 - As the community of faith expands so does the ongoing needs of its members. We see here the counter-cultural nature of the community being multi-cultural as well as participation in the ministry by more than just the apostles. We are reminded that God is making for Himself one body of all people who He is calling to play their part in His work.

What's Next (The Book of Acts) (Week 6) - Acts 5:12-42 - As the community of faith grows they begin to grow a larger reputation within the city - in spite of their strange ideas around the crucified Jesus, people regard them well and they are a blessing to their neighbours. Unfortunately this is a threat to the religious establishment (even as Jesus had been) and try to stop them. Here we find wisdom coming from one of the Jewish leaders, who counsels the others that if this is not a movement from God it will die out but that if it is, nothing - not even them - could stop it. This is a good reminder that what we do for God in His will has staying power, even when we face obstruction to it.

So... What's Next (The Book of Acts) (Week 5) - Acts 4:32-5:11 - The account of Ananias and Sapphira is a troubling one but speaks to us of God’s heart for His people to be generous while also revealing the serious nature of hypocrisy and the reminder that we cannot fool God. We mustn’t think that it is ok to carry on how we like and not expect some measure of accountability. This isn’t a passage intended to stir up fear but as a stern reminder of the call to be holy as He is holy. If we are in fact the new Temple of God, this is a vocation we must enter into seriously and with great care.

So... What's Next (The Book of Acts) (Week 4) - Acts 3-4:31 - The Spirit at work in the people of God will always result in the mission of God being worked out through them. Just as the ministry of Jesus was characterized by bringing wholeness to those He encountered in many ways, so this is evident in the work of the apostles early on in the book of Acts. We are invited to be people who preach the good news of Jesus and help bring wholeness to those that we encounter as well.

They are being established as a counter-cultural community who reflects the sacrificial love of Jesus to one another and to the world around them.

What's Next (The Book of Acts) (Week 2) - Acts 2:1-41 - Acts 2 opens up with the story of Pentecost, the arrival of the promised Spirit come to guide, direct and bring about the life of God in His people. The Spirit descends on the apostles in flames, signifying His presence and the fact that they are the new Temple of God in the world. We have been invited into this as well, the new Temple of God people serving as signposts of His work in the world.

What's Next (The Book of Acts) (Week 1) - Acts 1:1-11 - The book of Acts opens up with the resurrected Jesus spending time with His apostles in an effort to begin to prepare them for what is next. They are still unsure of what the Kingdom of God movement they’ve been invited into is all about, and so Jesus continues to teach them and promises them the gift of the Holy Spirit who will empower them in their mission. They are to be witnesses to what they have come to know about Jesus spreading the word across the world and He promises He will return to them.

Sacred Tears (Easter Sunday) (Week 3) - This resurrection account finds Mary Magdalene lingering alone - even in her grief and confusion she is searching for Jesus. In this search, she is the one who is found, and is known and has all her tears wiped away. This is the power of resurrection, that where we go looking for Jesus, He finds us and promises comfort forever.

Sacred Tears (Good Friday) (Week 2) - In many ways we have sanitized the cross, made it more palatable to take hold of, but it was and is a reminder of the worst we are capable of. This reality may make us want to turn away and yet the story of the cross is a story of being drawn in. In our grief we are invited to draw closer and find that here Jesus is providing for us - that He enters our grief and pain and takes upon Himself to ensure we have what we need.

Sacred Tears (Palm Sunday) (Week 1) - The story of the Triumphal Entry and Jesus response following it illustrates to us again the choice that lies before each of us: whether we will see God’s coming and to know how it is that He brings us peace or if we will continue to lean into our own way. Palm Sunday reminds us that Salvation comes not through strength but through humility.

Under the Sign of the Cross (Week 5) - Galatians 5:16-26 - Aaron Westera - The way forward is to align ourselves with God through living by His Spirit, alive and active in us. We can see the Spirit’s work in who we are becoming, characterized by His fruit and not that of our old selves.
Under the Sign of the Cross (Week 4) - Jeremiah 29:4-14 - Dr. Glenn Smith - Turning back to God and receiving His mercy does not instantly remove the reality of exile and struggle in our lives. We still live in a world opposed to His way and yet we have been called into community with others to live as He would have us live and to bless the world around us as an announcement of who He is and what He has done. We are invited to bring small pieces of God’s new creation to bear in the world around us.

Under the Sign of the Cross (Week 3) - Reg Lewicki - As we have sat with the reality of our own brokenness and considered the role of lament and repentance in our lives before God, this story that Jesus tells gives us an illustration of who God is. That He is the Father standing and watching and waiting and when we turn around to return to Him, He is running towards us to receive us.

Under The Sign Of The Cross (Week 2) - Reg Lewicki -Repentance is not something we talk much about in our lives anymore. We can tend to try and distill it down to simply feeling regret and saying I’m sorry, but the biblical framework for repentance is holistic and all-encompassing. The Hebrew word shuv means to turn back or to return and repentance is about doing that with our whole lives, turning back to the God who is life and finding that He receives us no matter where we come from.

Under The Sign Of The Cross (Week 1) - Reg Lewicki - With the echo of God’s good creation ringing in our ears from Genesis 1 and 2, it doesn’t take long for things to come crashing down. Genesis 3 provides a glimpse of why the world is the way it is, with Adam and Eve acting as a paradigm for our own tendency to desire to be like God and determine our own fate and way of life. But even here, in the fracturing of relationship between humans, God and creation, there is a whisper of hope that God is still at work and that He is still for us.

Invitations of Jesus (Week 1) - The invitation to follow Christ begins first by being introduced to Him and invited to come and see who He is and what He is about. It is noteworthy that John’s first recorded words of Jesus are “What do you want?” - literally, “What can I do for you?” Jesus invites us to come with our curiosity and questions and discover where He is and what He is all about. In this first account of Jesus connecting with His disciples we see His open invitation and hospitable nature as He make Himself available. What questions do you have for Jesus? How might you come near to Him to find out what He is about and who He is?

As good as it is to gather together on a Sunday morning, it is not enough for our transformation as followers of Jesus. This week we will unpack why gathering in “little church” - intentional community with one another - is designed for our well-being as we bring together information, experience and community/practice in a way that opens us up to be formed in the way of Jesus. Smaller gatherings allow us to go deeper in our faith journey if we allow them to call us out of our comfort into the mission that God has for us.
The wilderness is often a place of testing, where we are faced with temptation either external to ourselves or from within. We can be filled with doubt, or in our anxiety seek to take matters into our own hands instead of trusting in God. In the temptation of Jesus, Satan comes and tries to derail God’s Messianic plan, trying to sow seeds of doubt and an alternative plan for how to establish Himself. Jesus models for us the Scriptures speaking truth in the midst of lies, and coaxing us to remain faithful to God’s plan. Ultimately Jesus is victorious over temptation and we are given God’s Word and strengthened by His Spirit to do the same.
