In Acts 4:1–22, Peter and John face opposition for proclaiming the resurrection of Jesus. Yet even in the midst of threats and imprisonment, the gospel continues to advance. This passage reminds us that everyday mission is both God’s work and our witness: growth and opposition can happen at the same time, effective witness is empowered by the Holy Spirit, and resistance to the gospel often stems from a desire to hold on to power.
We are called to courage—not in our own strength, but in the Spirit’s power. The same Jesus who builds His church then is building His church now. After the healing of the lame man, the crowd rushes to Peter and John in awe—but Peter redirects their attention to Jesus, the Author of life. In The Discipline of Grace, Jerry Bridges wrote: “When you set yourself to seriously pursue holiness, you will begin to realize what an awful sinner you are. And if you are not firmly rooted in the gospel and have not learned to preach it to yourself every day, you will soon become discouraged and will slack off in your pursuit of holiness.” ... To preach the gospel to yourself, then, means that you continually face up to your own sinfulness and then flee to Jesus through faith in His shed blood and righteous life.” How have you seen this to be true in your own life?

There are various forms of worship, from shouting to dancing. But it’s not about the posture and the mode (although God cares about those). It’s more about the heart. The Israelites were only focused on the modes of worship and not the object of worship. This is how we can get away from what it means to authentically worship Christ if we aren’t careful. Paul’s words in Romans 12 are perhaps the clearest verses on worship: present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship. Worship touches all facets of our lives. Weakness comes when there’s a problem with our worship. We aren’t adoring who He is. God invites us to do this to show that we truly know Him and we are grateful for what He’s done for us!
