I certainly hope you’ve been missing my podcasts! I’ve taken a little hiatus to do some actual horse training, time with the family, some health issues, and a new grandchild!
As I get back on track, I wanted this new episode to dive into some critical issues surrounding how mainstream media and vocal social media minorities have manipulated the American public (and beyond!) through ‘fake news’ and/or by censoring certain topics and stories. For too long, it seems we’ve been willing to accept much of what’s been presented to us as ‘newsworthy’ or even as fact. But now that the censorship of mainstream and social media platforms has come to light, I am hopeful that we will become more discerning and less likely to accept everything we hear, read, or see at face value.
Through my podcasts, I want to shed light on the profound and far-reaching effects of this manipulation and deception when it comes to animal owners and animal related businesses. I am hopeful that you may just recognize that your beliefs about animal issues/ownership have been intentionally influenced in ways you didn’t even realize.

One of the most popular podcast episodes was a chat with Clinton Anderson, founder of Downunder Horsemanship who talked about horse training with Heidi. The original air date was May 2023, and Clinton certainly tells it like it is! Training our horses is vital to their well-being for life, and Clinton created The Method which, if followed, will create a solid foundation for a well mannered horse, and a basis to build upon. Horses can be trained for a variety of disciplines. In today’s world, people tend to become overly emotional about animals, and this is not healthy for the humans or the animals. This conversation provides a practical look at horse training, owning horses, and even the horse slaughter issue. Not a fun topic, but a very important one! Gaz does not mince words about his distaste for the so-called ‘trainers’ who claim to use positive reinforcement only and/or call themselves ‘force free’. There is in fact no scientific training method that employs only positive reinforcement. Gaz and the hosts discuss the 4 quadrants of Operant Conditioning (OP), which is the most universally known and recognized balanced training method (employed by humans as well!). Positive reinforcement is only one of the four quadrants of OP. Links below provide details regarding this legitimate, scientific training method. Gaz has also written books to assist dog owners with the training and behavior of their dogs. Questions to ask when you go to a shelter/rescue to look at dogs to adopt

- How long has it been at this shelter?
- Does this dog any special needs, health, or parasite issues? Any current or ongoing medications?
- Has this dog shown any aggression or have any bite history? (some states like California require disclosure)
- Has this dog been adopted out and returned? If so, in what time frame?

Animal euthanasia is a complicated topic and evokes strong emotions. As one of the goals of the podcast for hosts Heidi and Tommy is to take a deep dive into difficult and controversial topics regarding dogs, they decided this uncomfortable topic is certainly worthy of discussion. While many groups online are devoted to ‘no kill’ shelters and are firm in their positions, we were disappointed that no one was willing to come on as a guest to discuss their thoughts on the topic. This is discouraging as there needs to be more discussion and transparency surrounding euthanasia. The hosts discuss the scenarios for euthanasia including sick or aggressive animals, as well as overcrowding, and ponder the question… why are we not working together toward solutions? Dealing in facts, stats, and data and setting emotion aside would provide for a much healthier and transparent discussion, and the greater possibility of solutions

The American mustang is a living legend; an American icon and true native American. The wild horses of America illicit a strong emotional response from people, and for many they symbolize freedom. Diane Delano fell in love with American mustangs over 40 years ago. For decades she has operated a non-profit, the wild horse rescue center. She finds homes for her beloved horses, provides training and respite, and for some, lifetime sanctuary. Missy Dassinger tells the story of her family’s animals at their ranch in ND, and attempts by local officials, a veterinarian, and animal rights groups to confiscate their animals, or at least the ones with value. The Humane Society of the United States, an animal rights group, had offered $5000 to anyone who turned in animal owners that resulted in conviction. Was the monetary incentive a driving force? Why was the call accusing Missy’s father of not caring for his animals from an anonymous person that had not even seen the farm and was not in ND? While none of us want to see animals abused or neglected, it is also important that facts, expertise, and clear heads prevail when faced with a possible issue. Missy Dassinger worked to get the law in ND changed so that there must be a hearing before the local law enforcement can seize animals. Also, that an inventory of the animals, and where they are being kept is provided. If the Dassinger ranch was not caring for their animals, why did officials leave the animals on the farm, and allow Gary Dassinger to care for them? This is definitely a story that falls under #thereismoretothestory! The movie, The Stand at Paxton Co. tells the Dassinger’s story.

In the 1990’s there was a movie, Free Willy about a killer whale that returned to the wild. Subsequently, there was an attempt to free a real whale, Keiko, the whale from the movie, and it ended with disastrous results. Mark Simmons, who was the lead trainer and behaviorist on the project resigned, and then authored the book, Killing Keiko. In the past couple weeks, there is news of another killer whale slated to be ‘returned to the wild’ by animal rights ideologues. In contrast, the true experts – trainers, vets, and behaviorists are not in agreement with this plan to release a whale who has been in human care for over 50 years. One of the world’s foremost authorities on elephant reproduction, Dr. Dennis Schmitt joins Heidi. With all the misinformation and emotion about elephants, especially those in human care in zoos and circuses, this conversation is not to be missed! Dr. Schmitt, a veterinarian and elephant expert respected worldwide, has served as the lead vet credited with an unprecedented number of births of highly endangered Asian elephants. His conversation with Heidi highlights the race against time as there is a critical need to increase the dwindling elephant population. He provides insight into the fact that elephants in human care in zoos and circuses are part of the solution to saving elephants worldwide through successful and collaborative breeding programs, and important research projects.
Among his other notable achievements, he served as the Director of Veterinary Care and Research for Ringling Bros. Barnum & Bailey Circus and the Center for Elephant Conservation for 16 years which held the largest herd of Asian elephants in North America, as well as a highly successful breeding program. He has served as the research and reproductive adviser for the AZA Elephant TAG/SSP Management Group since 1987. As an author and co-author, he has published over 100 papers on elephant reproduction and physiology. He was also the lead veterinarian for the team that produced the first elephant born from artificial insemination. Dr. Schmitt is a founding member of the International Elephant Foundation (IEF) which has supported over 150 elephant research projects and provided over $7 million of funding to save elephants.
