Fort Zumwalt South’s girl soccer team achieved the three-peat over the weekend as they won the Missouri State High School Activities Association Class 3 title while the Clayton girls’ team brought home the state title in soccer for the first time in school history.
Let’s get caught up on another outstanding showing by our local teams in this week’s edition of the Monday Morning Wrap-Up sponsored by Triad Bank.
Fort Zumwalt South joined an elite group of teams by winning their third straight Class 3 title with a 2-1 win over Smithville Saturday at the World Wide Technology Soccer Park in Fenton. The Bulldogs advanced to the championship game with a 2-0 win over Ursuline Academy in the semifinals. In that contest, Fort Zumwalt South struck first in the 4th minute as Brooke Cattoor was credited with a goal after an Ursuline defender misplayed a header in the 6-yard box that fell into the goal to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead. Zumwalt South added to the lead in the 12th minute as Audrey Smith converted a penalty kick after a Bear foul in the box to make the score 2-0. That is all the Bulldogs would need as goalkeeper Allison Moore had 10 saves on the day to earn the clean sheet and push Zumwalt South to the title match.
In the Championship game, the Bulldogs once again scored first in the 13th minute of play as Isabel Montilone took a pass from Cattoor and buried a shot from the top of the box into the upper left corner of the goal to give Zumwalt South a 1-0 lead. The Bulldogs extended the lead in the 26th minute as Audrey Smith collected a give-and-go pass from Ashely Miller and slotted a shot into the lower left side of the goal to put Zumwalt South ahead 2-0. The Warriors cut the lead to 2-1 with a goal in the 34th minute to make the score 2-1, but the Bulldogs’ defense limited Smithville to just four shots over the last 40 minutes of play to earn their third consecutive state title. The Bulldogs finished the season with a record of 22-4. In the third-place contest, Ursuline scored a pair of goals in each half to claim the third-place trophy with a 4-0 win over Union.
Clayton made the most of their first-ever trip to the state final four as the Greyhounds needed to work overtime for the second consecutive match to claim the Class 2 title with a 3-2 victory over St. Pius X out of Kansas City. In the semifinals, Clayton outlasted defending state champion Whitfield in penalty kicks 3-2 and 4-3 in PKs. The Warriors raced out to an early 2-0 lead after Perry Rogan and Ella Rogan each scored in the first 12 minutes of the contest to put Whitfield on top. The Greyhounds started their comeback as Rachel Van Rhein scored the first of her two goals in the 26th minute on a penalty kick to cut the Whitfield advantage to 2-1. Van Rhein struck again in the 52nd minute as she took a cross from Lucia Melander and found the net to even the score at 2-2. That is how the match stayed through the final 58 minutes as the teams went to the dot. With the teams going to the seventh round of penalty kicks tied at 3-3, Annabelle Kujawa sent the Greyhounds to the championship match with a shot that made it past the Warriors goalkeeper to give Clayton the win.
The championship match was a back-and-forth affair as Clayton took the early lead in the 12th minute as Stella Whitney scored from 16 yards out to put the Greyhounds ahead 1-0. The Warriors answered two minutes later with a goal to even the contest at 1-1 and then took the lead in the 70th minute to push ahead 2-1. Anna McAndrew drew the Greyhounds even in the 76th minute as she buried a free kick from 30 yards out into the upper right corner of the goal to make the score 2-2. McAndrew gave the Greyhounds the win in the 93rd minute as she took a pass from Whitney and curled a shot from the top of the box into the upper left corner of the goal to give the Greyhounds their first state girls soccer title as they finished the year with a record of 13-10. In the third-place contest, Whitfield grabbed control of the match early on with four first-half goals and cruised to a 6-2 victory over Pheasant Hill.

It was a match for the ages in the Class 4 title game as Nerinx Hall and Liberty North put on a show under the lights as a Markers’ late comeback fell just short as the Eagles won the title with a 4-3 win in overtime. Nerinx Hall advanced to the title match with a convincing 4-1 win over Lafayette Friday afternoon as the Markers scored four second-half goals to claim the win. Emma Gianino scored the first of her two goals just as the second half began to put the Markers on top 1-0 only to see Alexandria Kinner tie the match just 17 seconds later as she scored on a shot from 6 yards out to make the score 1-1. The Markers then scored three times in a span of eight minutes as Gianino added her second goal of the game while Ella McAleenan and Nina Preusser added goals to help Nerinx Hall to their third straight title match.
The Markers drew first blood in the championship match as McAleenan scored on a well-placed header off a corner kick from Lauren Seppi in the 14th minute to put Nerinx Hall in front 1-0. The Eagles then exploded for three goals over the 26 minutes with their final goal coming with one second remaining in the half to take a 3-1 lead into the break. The Markers started their second-half rally in the 50th minute as an Ava Kutz header found the goal off of another Seppi corner kick to cut the Eagles’ lead to 3-2. Haylee Braun tied the match in the 54th minute as she collected a pass from Seppi and scored from 5 yards out to push the score to 3-3 as that is how the teams would finish after 80 minutes. The teams both had equal opportunities in the overtime, but it was Liberty North that would break through in the 95th minute as they scored with 23 seconds left on the clock to give them the victory. The Markers ended the season with an outstanding 19-3-1 record. In the third-place contest, Lafayette grabbed an early lead and never looked back as the Lancers defeated Kickapoo 4-1 to earn the trophy.
Villa Duchesne saw their outstanding season come to a close as the Saints fell to Father Tolton 1-0 in the Class 1 final. The Saints advanced to the championship game with a 4-0 victory over Saxony Lutheran in the semifinals. Villa scored three times in the first half as Georgia Leary connected on a pair of penalty kicks and Ellery Miller scored on a blast from 18-yards out to put the Saints ahead 3-0 at the half. Miller scored her second goal of the match off a breakaway in the 50th minute to give the Saints a 4-0 lead as the Villa defense did not allow a shot by the Crusaders in the final 40 minutes.
The championship match saw a pair of evenly matched teams square off as neither squad was able to score in the first 40 minutes. Tolton broke through for the game’s only goal in the 58th minute to take a 1-0 lead and that would be enough as the Saints did have many chances to score only to be turned away by the Trailblazers. Villa Duchesne finished their campaign with a record of 10-12-1.

It was an outstanding weekend of basketball action in the area as Kirkwood and Vashon came away with a pair of signature victories on the hardwood while Whitfield once again looks to be the team to beat in Class 3 on the wrestling mats after claiming a big tournament title.
Let’s get caught up on all the action in this week’s edition of the Monday Morning Wrap-Up brought to you by Triad Banks.
Vashon played host to one of the best one-day shootouts Saturday as any top teams from the Midwest took part, but it was the nightcap that everyone was waiting for as the host Wolverines played the top team in Class 6 in the state Missouri, Staley, and came away from the heavyweight battle with a 58-57 overtime victory over the Falcons.
After the Falcons raced out to an early first-quarter lead, Vashon settled in and got right back into the contest and trailed the Falcons 31-27 at the break. The game went back and forth in the second half with Vashon holding a slim two-point lead late in the contest, but Staley got a bucket in the waning seconds to push the contest into an extra session with the score tied at 48-48. The Falcons grabbed the lead in the overtime, but a Dierre Hill triple at the buzzer propelled the Wolverines to a hard-fought victory. The defending Class 4 champions were paced by Kennard Davis with 23 points while Hill finished the contest with 17 points in the win to help Vashon improve to 11-7 on the year.
The Kirkwood boys’ basketball team had a coming-out party Friday evening as the Pioneers took an early first-quarter lead and cruised to a 57-39 victory over De Smet to claim the title at the Circle 7 Shootout at Parkway West. The win also helped Kirkwood remain undefeated at 17-0 on the year.

On the wrestling mats at Howell, Whitfield showed that they are the team to beat in Class 3 as the Warriors took home the title at the Kyle Thrasher Invite this past weekend with 249.5 points. The Warriors held off another local powerhouse team in Hillsboro, who placed second with 248 points, Staley earned the third spot with 170 points, and Howell Central grabbed the fourth position with 131 points. This will be a precursor to the Class 3 districts as Whitfield and Hillsboro are placed in the same district that will take place in a few weeks.

It will be an all-St. Louis final in Class 4 as both St. Mary’s and St. Dominic won their semifinal matchups to advance to Faurot Field this Friday at 11 a.m.
The Dragons needed a second-half comeback to defeat defending Class 4 champion Smithville 37-23 as they look to win their second straight title after winning Class 3 last year. After trailing at halftime, the Dragons got their offense on track in the second half to come away with the victory. Jamal Roberts led the way for St. Mary’s with 144 yards on the ground while Chase Hendricks added another 76 yards rushing to aid in the victory.
In the other Class 4 semifinal, St. Dominic raced out to a lead in the first half and never looked back as the Crusaders defeated West Plains 42-14 to move on to their first state title game in school history.
After the Zizzers scored on their opening drive to take a 7-0 lead, Jackson Overton evened the contest up with a five-yard run midway through the first quarter to even the game at 7-7. Jackson Nickodym put the Crusaders ahead for good late in the quarter with an 80-yard return of a blocked field goal attempt to stake St. Dominic to a 14-7 advantage. Overton found the endzone again early in the second period on a 34-yard run to extend the Crusader lead to 21-7. West Plains answered on their next drive to cut the deficit to 21-14, but Sam Cross ran 53 yards to the endzone just two minutes later to push the lead to 28-14 at the half. St. Dominic put the game out of reach in the second half as their defense did not allow the Zizzers to find the endzone while Thomas Pulliam and Cross each scored on touchdown runs to put the Crusaders in the title game. Cross finished the afternoon with 203 yards on the ground while Overton added 108 yards rushing to pace the St. Dominic offensive attack.
In Class 3, Cardinal Ritter once again showed why they are the top team in the class as the Lions rushed past Pleasant Hill 54-35 to advance to their first title game since 2018. The Lions are looking for their first state championship after falling in the title game on two occasions and will take on Reeds Spring Saturday at 11 a.m.
The Lions cracked the scoreboard first as Fredrick Moore scored from 34 yards out to give Ritter a 6-0 lead. Pleasant Hill cut the lead in half late in the first quarter with a 33-yard field goal that made the score 6-3. Moore extended the Lions’ lead early in the second quarter with a 51-yard reception from Antwon McKay Jr., to push the score to 14-3. The area claimed two more state championships this past Saturday as CBC and East St. Louis took care of business while four teams advanced to Faurot Field for more state championship action next weekend in Columbia, Mo.
Let’s get caught up on all the action in this week’s edition of the Monday Morning Wrap-Up.
The MSHSAA Class 6 title game was one for the ages as CBC needed to rally from eight points down in the fourth quarter to defeat Lee’s Summit North 35-28 in overtime to claim the championship for the fifth time in the past eight years.

It was a tale of two halves as the teams combined for 48 points in the first 24 minutes with CBC scoring the only touchdown in the final half to force the extra session.
After the Broncos missed a 21-yard field goal on their opening drive, Jeremiah Love did not wait long to give CBC an early advantage as he took the first play of the Cadets’ opening possession and ran 80-yards to put the Cadets on top 7-0. North answered on their next drive with a touchdown pass to even the game at 7-7 at the end of the first quarter. In a wild second quarter, the Broncos took the lead early in the period on another pass play to grab a 14-7 lead only to see the Cadets cut the deficit to one as Love grabbed a 4-yard pass from Cole McKey to make the score 14-13. North added to the lead with 6:28 left in the half on another long pass play to put the advantage to 21-13. The Cadets answered with 1:46 remaining in the quarter as Love collected an 89-yard pass from McKey and raced to the endzone to get the score once again to within one at 21-20. The Broncos ended the half with their fourth passing touchdown of the game with four seconds on the clock to take a 28-20 lead into the locker room.
The second half turned into a defensive battle as neither team was able to score until Love raced seven yards to the endzone with 6:49 left in regulation to cut the lead to 28-26. CBC converted the all-important two-point conversion as Jeremiah McClellan found Corey Simms on a swing route to tie the game at 28-28. North had a chance to win the game with five seconds remaining as they missed a field goal from 20 yards out, but the Cadets were called for a roughing the kicker penalty that gave the Broncos another chance at winning the game. CBC would not be denied as they blocked the Bronco’s second field goal attempt as time expired to force overtime. The Cadets needed just one play on their possession as Love scored his fifth touchdown of the evening with a 30-yard sprint to the endzone that put CBC on top 35-28. The Cadets’ defense sealed the deal as they stopped the Broncos on a fourth and 16 pass play to give CBC their second consecutive state title.
Love paced the Cadet’s offense with 219 yards on 19 carries with three scores while adding another 106 yards receiving and two more touchdowns. McKey finished the day with 256 yards on 18 completions and two touchdowns. Michael Teason led the Cadets on defense with 12 tackles while Zakiese Smith added nine stops to aid CBC in the win.
Over on the Illinois side, East St. Louis won their 10th state title and first since 2019 as the Flyers defeated Prairie Ridge out of Crystal Lake 57-7 Saturday afternoon at Memorial Stadium in Champaign, Ill.
Prairie Ridge scored their only touchdown of the game midway through the first quarter on a 14-yard touchdown run to take a 7-0 lead. After that point, it was all East St. Louis as the Flyers answered with a TaRyan Martin 34-yard run and a two-point conversion to grab an 8-7 lead. Martin found the endzone again early in the second quarter on an eight-yard run to make the score 15-7. Martin then scored his third touchdown of the game with another eight-yard run with 3:39 left in the half to push the score to 22-7.
The Flyers put the game out of reach in the third quarter as they found the endzone four times with Robert Battle tossing a pair of scoring passes and then he used his legs to score from 26 yards out to make the score 50-7. Battle found Jesse Watson on a 27-yard pass and then hit Rico Bond for a 41-yard touchdown strike in the quarter with Chris Bennett, Jr. finding the endzone from 12-yards out to give the Flyers a 50-7 lead after three quarters.
Antwon Hayden scored the final touchdown for East St. Louis with 6:45 remaining in the game with a 69-yard run to put the Flyers ahead 57-7. Martin finished the game with 174 yards on 17 carries and three touchdowns while Battle threw for 207 yards on 10 completions with three scores to lead the Flyer’s offense. The state titles continue to roll into the metro area as a pair of soccer teams claimed championships at the WorldWide Soccer Park while two football teams clicked their tickets to the state championship games this coming weekend. Plus, it is the annual Turkey Day Game between Webster Groves and Kirkwood on Thursday at Moss Field.
Time for a holiday week edition of the Monday Morning Wrap-Up!
We start on the football field as CBC scored 20 unanswered points in the third quarter en route to a 46-21 victory over Liberty North to move on to the state title contest Saturday at Faurot Field in Columbia, Mo. After the Eagles scored to take a 7-0 lead, the Cadets got on the scoreboard as Jeremiah McClellan scored from four yards out to cut the deficit to 7-6. Liberty North added to the lead in the second, but CBC answered as Jeremiyah Love raced 75 yards to the end zone to cut the Eagles lead to 14-12 at the half.
The Cadets exploded in the third as the rushing attack gained control of the game as McClellan, Love, and Dylan Van all found the end zone on the ground to put CBC on top 32-14. Ralph Dixon put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter as he scored from 38 yards out to extend the lead to 39-14. After a Liberty North score, Love scored his third touchdown of the day on a nine-yard run to put the Cadets into the title game for the second straight season. Love finished the game with 172 yards on the ground while Van added 80 yards rushing in the win.
CBC will take on Lee’s Summit North, who defeated De Smet Friday evening, Saturday at 4 p.m. in Columbia. The Cadets are looking to win their fifth state title in the past eight years.
Over on the Illinois side, East St. Louis rebounded in the second half after trailing Lemont 14-6 through two quarters as the Flyers outscored Lemont 26-15 in the final 24 minutes of the contest to advance to the IHSA Class 6A championship game with a 32-29 victory Saturday afternoon. The Flyers used a punishing rushing attack that saw TaRyan Martin carry the ball 40 times for 349 yards and four scores to aid East St. Louis in advancing to the title game against Crystal Lake Saturday afternoon starting at 1 p.m. at Memorial Stadium in Champaign, Ill. The game against Crystal Lake is a rematch of the Class 6A championship game two years ago, which saw the Flyers win 43-21.
On the pitch at the WorldWide Soccer Park this past weekend, Borgia claimed their first boys’ soccer title in school history while Webster Groves claimed their third soccer championship.
The Knights needed a goal in the 78th minute to break a scoreless tie and grab the title with a 1-0 win over Summit Christian Academy. After winning the semifinal over Bishop DuBourg Friday with a goal in the last two minutes, Borgia once again used heroics in the later stages of the game to earn the win. It was a defensive battle between the two teams for the first 77 minutes until Adam Rickman took a rebound off a defender and slotted a shot into the lower left corner of the goal to put the Knights on top 1-0. Justin Mort earned the clean sheet for Borgia with six saves in the contest.
Webster Groves needed to work overtime to win their third state title as the Statesmen defeated Kansas City East 3-2 in a match that needed penalty kicks to decide the winner. The Bears took an early lead in the 26th minute and held on to the advantage after the first 40 minutes. Webster Groves evened the match in the 53rd minute as Jonas Oestrelie fired a shot from 25-yards out into the left side of the goal to tie the game at 1-1. The Statesmen took the lead in the 74th minute as Oliver Doyle converted a penalty kick after an East foul in the box to make the score 2-1. The Bears answered two minutes later with a shot that bounced in off the post to put the score at 2-2. The two teams played on even terms for the remainder of regulation and over the two overtime periods. In the penalty kick phase of the match, Drew Rekart, who entered the game late in regulation, make a pair of stops on the first two East shots while Doyle, Charles Heard, and Oesterlie all converted their kicks. After East found the net with their third attempt, Jamieson Peplow sent the Statesmen home with the title after he nailed his attempt to give Webster Groves a 4-1 victory in kicks.
In other action at the Soccer Park, Orchard Farm saw their season come to an end in the Class 2 title match as the Eagles fell to Marshall 2-1 as the Owls won in penalty kicks 4-3 while CBC dropped the Class 4 championship match to Rockhurst 1-0 after the Hawklets scored a goal late in the contest to claim the title.
Before the state semifinals take place in the other classes on the football field, the annual Turkey Day game between Webster Groves and Kirkwood will take place at Moss Field on Thanksgiving Day starting at noon. This will be the last game played on the grass at Moss field as the school district saw a bond issue pass earlier this year that will help in renovating the legendary stadium with a new field, stands, and press box. The Pioneers have won the Frisco Bell for the past eight years and will look to keep the prized bell at their school.
The 2022-23 basketball season started up over the weekend and many annual early-season tournaments dot the schedule this week.
