In 2008, Renu Khator became the first female chancellor in the state of Texas and the first Indian immigrant to lead a comprehensive research university in the U.S. Under Renu’s leadership, the University of Houston earned Tier One status for research from the Carnegie Foundation, and opened Houston’s first medical school in more than 50 years. It’s more than tripled the number of National Academy members on the faculty, and dramatically improved graduation rates. Dr. Khator has been named to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and has served on numerous boards, including the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas, the NCAA, the American Council on Education, and the Association of American Colleges and Universities. Additionally, Renu has been an advisor to several Indian prime ministers. She has been named Houstonian of the year, inducted into the Texas Women’s Hall of Fame, received a Houston Business Journal Lifetime Achievement Award and, in 2014, Indian President Mukherjee presented her with the Samman Award, the highest distinction bestowed upon a non-resident Indian. Rubenstein’s memberships and awards are too lengthy to list. He is especially known for his philanthropy. He’s an original signer of The Giving Pledge, and a leader in the area of Patriotic Philanthropy, having made transformative gifts for the restoration or repair of many of America’s most important monuments, and he’s provided long-term loans to the U.S. government of his rare copies of the Magna Carta, the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the Emancipation Proclamation, the 13th Amendment, the first map of the U.S., and the first book printed in the U.S. David recently bought the Baltimore Orioles. He is the author of four books and in this episode Dan and David discuss one of these books, namely, How to Lead.

Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Council on Foreign Relations, the National Gallery of Art, the Economic Club of Washington, and the University of Chicago. David is also a Trustee of Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, Johns Hopkins Medicine, the Institute for Advanced Study, the National Constitution Center, the Brookings Institution, and the World Economic Forum. He’s a Director of the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
Rubenstein’s memberships and awards are too lengthy to list. He is especially known for his philanthropy. He’s an original signer of The Giving Pledge, and a leader in the area of Patriotic Philanthropy, having made transformative gifts for the restoration or repair of many of America’s most important monuments, and he’s provided long-term loans to the U.S. government of his rare copies of the Magna Carta, the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, the Bill of Rights, the Emancipation Proclamation, the 13th Amendment, the first map of the U.S., and the first book printed in the U.S. David recently bought the Baltimore Orioles. He is the author of four books and in this episode Dan and David discuss one of these books, namely, How to Lead.

John helped found McCaw Cellular where he was Chief Operating Officer and Vice Chairman, which became the largest wireless operator in the U.S. and which was sold to AT&T to become AT&T Wireless. He then founded Western Wireless, where he served as Chairman and CEO until it was acquired by Alitel, and he founded Voicestream, where he served as Chairman and CEO, selling it to Deutsche Telecom in 2001 for $50.7 billion. Deutsche Telecom renamed the company T-Mobile USA and it remains headquartered in Bellevue, Washington. John also served as Chairman of Clearwire until it was sold to Sprint in 2013. John is a member of the Wireless Hall of Fame.

A co-founder of 10 companies, Pisano is dedicated to translating engineering breakthroughs for the benefit of society. In 2000, for example, he co-founded Mercator MedSystems with UC Berkeley doctoral student Kirk Seward in order to commercialize their MEMS-enabled breakthrough in medical device design and manufacturing. Today, the company’s medical devices are used around the world to deliver drugs, stem cells and other therapies to tissues at precise locations deep with the body. What’s next? A third generation farmer, raised in upstate New York, Paul wanted nothing to do with farming as a teen and decided to follow his great-grandfather and pursue a career in medicine. He earned his B.S. in Chemistry at Notre Dame (UND) and was accepted into medical school. That’s the point at which mentors intervened, including his father, ultimately encouraging him to pursue a different path. Their advice made sense to Paul and he moved to California, graduating from University of Davis three years later with a Masters of Science in Viticulture and Enology.
