A truly unique episode today as we managed to snaffle the incredible Dean Pendergast whilst he was on a flying visit from New Zealand!Dean is an absolute innovator throughout his career and currently heads up the EnrolMy - the market leader in making bookings within the childcare industry simple and effective.
It's a great episode where:- He talks about how leaders are both born AND made- The importance of being open minded - even at a senior level we may not always be right - How luck can give you the opportunity to get a good head start, but only you can make sure you get ahead. - How a starting point in life does not dictate where your career goes- Books - You’ll want to hear these recommendations! - CV tips and importance of honesty. - Plus a GREAT final ONE thing.Lawrence’s 3 things:“1. When Dean spoke about how to be a great leader he talks about the amount of literature out there that help with this. He talks about people being naturally gifted when it comes to leadership – but its through continuous hardwork and learning that you truly become a top class leader – it is both nature and nurture.
He talks about how he had a great start in life and how he was lucky with his upbringing however the onus is on him to develop and make sure he fulfils potential – it’s the opposite of the world owes me something mentality, it’s we owe the world something and its up to us to work towards it.
One thing to takeaway is to be open in your views and not afraid to accept that you are wrong – he needed to foster a team dynamic where any one can contribute but also where they feel comfortable disagreeing with senior management and that is what has pushed their business on.“We hope you love this episode and if you have any favourite parts or if anything resonates with you we would love to hear from you. Chloe is a big friend of us at Love Recruitment and we could not be more excited to welcome her into the Love Your Career Podcast chair!Chloe exudes authentic advice and guidance throughout. That’s bravery!- Keeps breaking her own ceilings - we loved this chat. We know we say this a lot but what an episode this is and so happy to have Mike Clare on the podcast. Mike is the CEO of Junior Adventures Group UK and is someone we work with in a partnership relationship with our Love Care Recruitment business.Mike begins with some history of his background at Tesco, starting aged 15 and progressing through to leading parts of the entire operation before his current role. Advice, guidance, stories and tips shine through every time Mike has the mic.He covers so many of these areas, but to cover just a few:- We had a great discussion around mentorship, both in early career times and as we all progress and evolve over time.- How he has learned from the bumps in the road in a career.- Stealing and copying with pride from great people through his career. We love how Mike brought this alive for us.- We explore not only where bad times or experiences slowed us down, we also explored where he had certain ‘accelerators’ in his career. Is the key to this ‘lightening up’ and being thankful?- Power of sideways and backward steps - Power or partnerships and meaningful relationships. How vital trust, openness and vulnerability is to the success of relationships like this. - Advice for people in their careers - some real golden nuggets in there - advice from someone who started at 15 and progressed how he has.- Businesses needing to create the environment for better recruitment and placing high value on the narrative and great communication through the process.Lawrence’s 3 things….1. Mike’s leadership perspective in current times - being largely a facilitator, creating teams that are best as a team not as individuals. 2. Career accelerator - great discussion! Is it about being thankful? Is it about lightening up?3. Partnerships and meaningful relationships advice - how to maximise this in business and why its worked for him.We hope you love this episode and if you have any favourite parts or if anything resonates with you we would love to hear from you. Well, we needed to roll out the Love Recruitment red carpet for this week’s guest…. It is industry legend, the man, the myth that is Mr Steve Scales. Steve is a real and true friend of Love and someone the entire team gravitate towards whenever we see him. Formerly at UK Active, Steve is now Chief Revenue Officer at Gladstone Software. We love this episode. Among many, many great topics, some of our highlights include:- He talks about real balance of letting your career happen and going with it. - Importance of Trust. We loved how he talked about Abhi and his advice and how that stayed with him - Advice for people who may feel they are getting towards being a bit stagnated. Steve gives a real example of where this has happened to him and the steps he took.- Hear how the most connected man in fitness became that. Being authentic. Genuinely caring and helping each other be successful - Great influences on him, so many great people referenced that have impacted Steve.- Books - You’ll want to hear these recommendations! - CV tips and importance of honesty. - Plus a GREAT final ONE thing.Lawrence’s 3 things:“1. I thought the point about getting out of the way at Uk active was a really interesting point and something that resonated with me. 2. Authenticity. Again and again and again displayed, referenced and proved.3. The design that he, Jack and Steve created at UK Active. What they wanted future team members to be like and the roles to look like and then the importance of discipline in sticking to these principles.“We hope you love this episode and if you have any favourite parts or if anything resonates with you we would love to hear from you. So pleased to welcome fitness industry connecter and leader Steve Orton. You may know Steve from events like Body Power and Perform X but he is also an exceptional industry consultant and well regarded by anyone who knows him.
In this episode you will get to know him better, find out about his career journey, his learnings, his successes and also where the challenges have been. Just by hearing his story, you will gain knowledge and understanding to help your career we are sure.
The episode has a great start - honest, authentic and clear, where he highlights about being fluid, going with the flow. ‘Winging’ it a bit. But he is very clear in being you and do it your way. He also covers the importance of networking and being self aware and his overall career journey - just going through it opened up lots of learnings. Particularly those early ‘shaping’ jobs in door to door sales and recruitment.

We are perhaps a little biased on this one but we think this podcast is a great one for the single reason of who it is, Catherine Ferma, Operations Director at The Gym Group. Lawrence worked for Catherine at Esporta Croydon many years ago and has always been very open about the impact and credit he gives to Catherine for helping to shape his management style. Catherine is dynamic, open, honest and exceptionally talented and someone we wanted on as a guest when we first began considering how Love Your Career was going to be.
