Welcome to the Protect The Asset Podcast, created for personal trainers who want to have a rewarding career that changes lives and pays them well.
I want the podcast to be a safe space where coaches can share their career journey, both the highs and the lows.
A space where ambitious coaches can connect and learn from each other to build a fruitful career that aligns with their purpose, visions, values, and goals.
It's time to brush off your self-doubts as people need your help.
My guest today is Carlos Fernandez (@losmvmt).
Now I came across Carlos's Instagram account as we have very similar interest in training.
I checked out his profile. I visited his website, and I signed up to his newsletter just out of interest.
That's when I realized that Carlos has only been in the online personal training space for less than a year, and yet he's got a very professional and mature attitude to business, and he's a long way ahead of most personal trainers who are trying to build an online business.
I was curious to connect with Carlos and hear more about his story.
Why did he become an online personal trainer?
Where did he learn about building an online business?
What are his visions and goals for the future, and how does he perform his standing side splits without snapping himself in half.
In this episode we cover a lot of these points as well as building a business from scratch, imposter syndrome, time management, career vision, education, mentors, choosing a niche and a lot more.
Carlos is a very switch on guy who is obviously very passionate about handstands strength and flexibility training.
Even though he's new to online personal training, he's got his head in the game, and there's a lot personal trainers can learn from this episode.
So strap yourself in and prepare to protect your number one asset.

My guest on today's show is Jules Burgemeestr.
Jules is a personal trainer based in Melbourne. And over the years, he's built a reputation as an injury rehabilitation specialist. He also trains a number of athletes and he works with a lot of coaches as a coaching mentor.
I first met Jules on an camp in Thailand back in 2015 and for a big guy, he moves really.
I've also met several of Jules's clients who are super strong, super motivated and eager to learn and master new skills. If you've been listening to The Protect The Asset podcast, you would've heard both Ashley Jones and Amy Bowe mention hiring Jules as a coach and a mentor.
Jules has a wealth of knowledge and is passionate about helping more people create a healthy lifestyle.
You'll understand what I mean. When you listen to Jules, speak about his latest farm project and how he wants to help people take control of their health in an immersive way.
Jules is one of those guys who is willing to share his knowledge and experience with anyone who's ready to listen. He's not big on marketing and sales, but he's managed to build a very successful career through results-driven hard work and client referrals.
It was awesome to reconnect with Jules and learn more about his world.
And I really hope you enjoy this episode.
Today on the podcast. I'm very excited to be chatting with Lucas. Aaron, who is the creator of the ranger strength program.
Lucas has been a personal trainer since 2005, and he has an exciting story to share. At a young age, he played sports until he injured his knee. And that's when he discovered the gym and started doing strength training.
He was a competitive power lifter for several years before he suffered a bicep injury. It sounds like this was a tough time for Lucas, as he struggled to find his purpose and direction in life.
But this is when he realized that his movement capacity and body composition were in bad shape.
He started exploring gymnastics and flexibility training and sharing his story on an Instagram account under the handle of body weight dad.
This is when I first connected with Lucas as he was doing some pretty cool stuff and making some very impressive gains.
Since then Lucas has built a thriving online community called range of strength. During that time he's done some awesome collaborations with guys like Ben Patrick knee over to guy, and Kegan Smith was real movement, now ATG mentor.
If you've not seen Lucas's work, I recommended check it out.
I hope you enjoyed this episode of the protect, the asset podcast.
My guest today is Mike Lee (mikeleept).
Mike is a personal trainer and an educator who's been working in the fitness industry for 11 years. In that time, he's been a face to face personal trainer, a CrossFit gym coach, a mentor to new coaches, a CrossFit gym manager, and owner, and an online coach and educator.
But the story behind this journey is fascinating.
Mike was in his early twenties when he fractured his back, he put it down to over training overworking and not making enough time for recovery.
The doctors told Mike he would never deadlift squat or Olympic lift again, but Mike, wasn't happy with that answer.
For the next nine months, Mike had to rethink his training and how he worked with his clients.
This was when he started to move some of his clients online so he could make more time to prioritise his own.
It was at this point in his career that Mike took a holiday and managed to earn pretty much the same wage that he would've if he stayed working at the gym, his online business had reached a level where he could travel and work if he wanted to.
Currently Mike is coaching clients with back pain and doing injury rehab. He also works with a lot of athletes who want to increase their performance. Mike is also writing and coaching educational courses for coaches.
If you're a personal trainer looking to build and grow an online business, you're going to get a lot out of this episode.
We talk about Mike's transition to online coaching, how he grew his business and what he thinks of the fitness education system.
Mike is certainly an ideas man, and he's definitely got a knack for seeing the gaps in the market that can be filled by online personal trainers.
I hope you enjoy this episode with Mike Lee.
Let's get stuck in.
My guest this week is Jason Ahipene Jason is the head gymnastics strength and mobility coach at movement co in Perth, Western Australia.
Jase was working an unfulfilling office job when he found Calisthenics.
He started training himself in the playgrounds around Perth, learning to do muscle ups, back levers, front levers, and more. His passion for bodyweight training led him into coaching.
He started at a 24-hour gym, teaching handstands in gymnastics rings classes at a yoga studio.
In the beginning, Jase was working with an array of different clients who had different goals.
Although his passion was Calisthenics, it took him some time, but Jason ended up finding his tribe and working with more and more clients who wanted to learn bodyweight skills.
We speak about Jason's transition into personal training, the long hours, the low pay and the grind. We also talked about the launch of movement Co and some of the valuable lessons Jason and his colleagues learned as the gym business grew.
Jase is undoubtedly a passionate coach who loves the analytical side of coaching. He's all about the details, finding the next challenge and learning new skills. And boy, does he have some skills, an inspiration to all of us in our forties.
He'll love me saying that.
Anyway. It's nice to connect with Jason and hear more about his story finally.
So I hope you enjoy this episode with Jason. Ahipene
A slightly different show today instead of talking to a personal trainer or a coach. My guest today is Martin Sully, a brand strategist and owner of snapper studios. So Martin is empowering thoughtful brands with strategy and design. So branding is a lot more than meets the eye. We often think of our logo.
Our images and maybe our colour palette as the elements that make up our brand. But the visual aspects of branding are only at the surface level. So in today's episode, Martin and I talk about how your business, vision values and goals impact your brand. We talk about the importance of knowing the why behind what your business stands for.
We also go into talking about, should personal trainers be using a business name to grow their brand, or should they be using their own name, their personal name to grow their brand when and why you might choose one or the other? What is branding? How far does branding go? We look at the culture. We look at the implications for our staff.
We look at how it affects the clients, our client niche, and all these. Very important aspects of your business are in this conversation today. There's a lot of useful information in this episode, that'll help personal trainers build and grow their brands.
So I hope you enjoy this episode. Let's get stuck in.
My guest today is the founder and co-owner of Charge CrossFit in Melbourne. Ashley Jones.
Ash has owned Charge CrossFit for over a decade. And he's definitely learned a lot in the process. 18 months into the business, the partnership broke down and Ash nearly went bankrupt. Ash was injured and burnt out at the time, and his work-life balance was skewed heavily towards work.
But he made the call not to close the gym and to try to turn things around.
Ash and I discussed business partnerships, the challenge of running a business, becoming a team leader and investing in mentors and business coaches.
Full credit to Ash and his wife, Renee, who managed to turn their business around and build an incredible gym community in Melbourne.
A few years back, Ash and Renee made the call to leave Melbourne and move to the beach town of Noosa. Together they've set up a new life at a much slower vibration than the city life they've left behind.
Ash still manages the business side of CrossFit charge from Noosa, but he also runs personal training sessions from his home gym, and he teaches some classes at one of the local gyms.
This lifestyle change has given Ash more freedom, energy, and time to do the things he loves, like go surfing.
It's been challenging, and Ash has jumped off a lot of cliffs to get where he is today.
I really enjoyed catching up with Ash and learning more about his story. Although we've known each other for a while, we've not had the chance to sit down and have a conversation like this.
So I hope you enjoy this conversation.
Let's get stuck in.
My guest today is Amy Bowe, owner and creator of warrior schools which teaches women how to train to build strength and feel confident in their bodies. Amy has been in the personal training and coaching game for 14years. She has a wealth of experience and knowledge to share, and I really enjoyed this conversation.
I love Amy's confidence around who she is, what she does, who she serves and what her role is as a coach.
Amy shares her insights into building a business that stays true to her values and beliefs while also meeting her clients where they at.
No only does Amy have a super clear client niche, but there are certain prerequisites to joining warrior school, and she's not afraid to say no to clients that are not a good fit for her program or that are not ready for her program.
She puts the best interest of her clients first, and her super high standards and attention to quality have allowed her to build an online business that suits her lifestyle and pays her well.
I hope you're ready for a killer episode. Let's get stuck in.
My guest today is Jack Turner.
Jack was working in a Melbourne based gym when COVID hit. He was forced to move his personal training career online as gyms in Melbourne were shut down.
In hindsight, it's been a blessing for Jack as his online career grew quickly. In fact, it grew so quickly that Jack was close to burnout and he had to stop marketing his online services until he could find a way to free up more time.
We talk about systems and processes, choosing a niche, online marketing, time management, mentors and Jack's future plans to build a team to help him manage the demand for his online company state of motion.
So, grab your notebook and be prepared to jot down some of the tips and tricks Jack shares in this episode.
My guest is none other than Ed Haynes. Ed is the CEO and founder of coastal CrossFit, Hong Kong. He also runs an online group program called the process programming and he's the co-founder of earned athletics apparel. How does this guy run three businesses, and keep fit, manage a team, deliver a podcast, find time for a healthy work-life balance and do so much?
I've known Ed since 2010, and I've watched his career grow from a distance. So it was great to reconnect with ed and to hear about his career journey.
I was super inspired by so much of this conversation. And when I was going through trying to figure out the highlights, I was just highlighting everything.
There's so much to take away from this podcast. We talk about leadership. We talk about extreme ownership. We talk about self-reflection self-development, and we talk about company values. There are just so many gold nuggets throughout this conversation and I'll be listening to it multiple times.
Anyway. I really hope you enjoy this episode.
Let's get stuck in.
My guest today is strength and conditioning coach Steve Collins.
Steve and I started our personal training careers at the same commercial gym in Angel, London, in 2010. Showing our age now.
Steve realised that working for a commercial gym isn't the best way to build a financially stable career. So, he hired a personal training studio in central London and started his own P.T. business.
He also accepted a job at Ultimate Performance, a globally recognised body fat transformation gym. UP has locations worldwide, and they've built a certain reputation in the industry.
Steve talks about his hunger to become a successful strength coach and the wrong turns he took as he grew his career in London.
After working crazy hours and feeling close to burnout, he decided to take a break and handed his clients over to his colleagues and holiday in Australia. He loved the mangos and avocados so much that he chose to stay in Australia and rebuild his training career from scratch.
He accepted a job at a gym in Perth, and it wasn't long before he was working crazy hours, getting out of bed at 4:15 am 5 days a week, and feeling burnout and depressed. Steve was stuck in his role and didn't have an escape route until his permanent residency was approved.
Steve left the gym and started working from his home garage gym as soon as he could.
In this episode, we cover a lot from the "work harder" fitness industry culture, burnout, depression, finding a sustainable career, and being in control.
I hope you enjoy this episoide.
Let's get stuck in.
I believe online personal trainers deserve a career that offers them both freedom and financial security.
One of the best ways to accomplish this is to choose a client niche.
In this episode of the Protect The Asset Podcast, I want to discuss the resistance personal trainers feel when choosing an online niche and narrowing down.
This is a widespread problem that many online personal trainers have, and it's costing them business.
Why is it so hard to choose a niche?
Why do we feel a strong resistance to narrowing down our audience?
I place some of the blame on the mainstream fitness culture. There are a lot of fitness educators encouraging P.T's to be the generalist, but this leads to overwhelm, imposter syndrome, and burnout.
You can't possibly be the best personal trainer for every client.
The truth is, you don't want to be.
So, what can you do to become a leader in your field and build a sustainable career that allows you to work less and earn more?
Listen to find out...
My guest today is Jordan Travers.
At a young age, Jordan wanted to be a marine biologist, but after being in a serious scooter accident, he spent about a year recovering both physically and mentally.
During this time, surrounded by health care professionals, Jordan decided to change his career plans.
A couple of years after his accident, Jordan started his personal training career at one of the most prestigious gyms in Australia, 5th element.
He quickly climbed the ranks from the juice bar to a level 3 5th Element personal trainer.
He was passionate about personal training, and he was going above and beyond to deliver client results. Like so many of us.
In 2017 he published a book, man alive, about his story and his passion for men's health.
By the end of 2017, he was absolutely cooked, his words. So he decided to let his in-person clients go and focus on a corporate wellness program.
Jordan is now working as a health and P.E teacher as well as running rights of passage retreats for young men. Jordan's passion for health is evident in everything he does.
Jordan shares his journey and reflects on what he might have done differently if he had his time again.
We talk about the long hours, the endless opportunities, always saying "yes", sacrificing his health and happiness for the job, the toxic nature of social media in the health and fitness space, building a brand, and so much more.
Jordan also managed to turn the microphone around and ask me some powerful questions during this podcast. I got a little emotional when he asked me why I do what I do. Part of me wanted to take this out of the podcast, but another wanted to be vulnerable and authentic, so I left most of it in there.
Anyway, I hope you enjoy this podcast. Please feel free to leave a review and share this podcast with those who might find it helpful.
Let's get stuck in!`
In today's episode, my guest is a good friend, an old college and training buddy for a previous life in London, and a personal trainer who has moved his career 100% online.
Erdi Babili transitioned from being an in-person P.T working out of a typical commercial gym, to running a hybrid method in-person and online business, to teaching classes, opening his gym, and then finally deciding to take a leap of faith and move his career 100% online.
IN this episode, we focus on Erdi's transition from in-persona P.T to 100% online P.T. This journey took place between early 2017 to late 2019 as Erdi was being pulled in all directions with his coaching career.
Initially, online personal training was an extra income stream that continued to pay Erdi a wage when he left the commercial gym, worked as a contracted coach teaching classes, running workshops, and opening his own gym.
Erdi talks about several vital mentors and a number of career coaching courses that helped him grow in confidence and build a successful online career.
He went from earning 2000-2500GBP per month while working in the commercial gym 60-80hr per week, to working 10-15hr a week and making 4000-5000GBP per month working as an online coach.
He says that online personal training has given him the freedom to choose his working hours, spend more time with his partner, focus on his health, make more progress in his training, travel, and deliver better client results.
There are a lot of great tips and insights into how Erdi successful transition his career. So if you're a personal trainer who has an online business, or you are looking to offer an online service, you're going to enjoy this episode.
Let's get to it!

My guest today is a personal trainer who has taken some significant leaps of faith in his coaching career.
Erwin Regidor has had a very unique and exciting career journey that started back in the day when he was playing American Football and following a bodybuilding style of training.
Erwin competed in amateur bodybuilding events before setting his sights on the marines. He knew his training approach needed to change, and that's when he discovered CrossFit.
He later left his unfulfilling corporate career and started his coaching career at a CrossFit gym in Santa Cruz.
After a few years of coaching, he took his first BIG leap of faith and moved to China to take on the role of head coach at one of the first CrossFit gyms in Shanghai.
A few years later, he would take a second leap of faith and move his career online.
Erwin puts a lot of this down to luck, but over the years you see that Erwin has established himself as a reputable and trustworthy coach.
Being a personal trainer can be challenging at times, and it can be hard to "take a leap of faith" in our careers and walk away from the career security we have. We have a sense of loyalty to our clients, gym members, colleague and even our employer.
However, sometimes we need to take that leap of faith to move forward in our careers.
Erwin shares some great insights into his career journey, and those of you considering a change your coaching role will enjoy this episode.
Let's get stuck in. I hope you enjoy this conversation with Erwin Regidor.
G'day, and Welcome to episode one of The protect the asset podcast. Today, I'm excited to be talking to Matt Connolly about his career journey.
Matt worked as a special forces police officer in central London when he decided to change careers and open a CrossFit gym. He left the police force and followed his passion for all things health and fitness.
After owning and managing the gym for a few years, Matt started training more and more clients online, to a point where he was making more money online than he was from the gym.
He moved his career online and started running athlete workshops around Europe. He was later hired by OPEX fitness as a head coach.
Matt loves a challenge, and he's definatly a passionate coach who will go the extra mile for his clients. However, his career caught up with him, and Matt went through a transformative experience that made him question what he wanted in his career.
Matt is currently training online clients and working with online personal trainers as a career coach. He is a big believer in practising what you preach.
I enjoyed this conversation with Matt as he has a wealth of career experience and knowledge to share when it comes to building a sustainable personal training career.
Let's get stuck in. I hope you enjoy this conversation with Matt Connolly.
