Do you ever look at someone and wonder…what’s going on inside their head? Anxiety, anger, fear, frustration, sadness, joy… where do all those thoughts come from?… It’s like I’m having a breakdown again… I feel awful, I feel useless, I feel annoying.. Is everything falling apart? Why do I feel like crying? Sadness takes over, but where is the joy? ‘Who’s your friend who likes to play?’ But hang on… when I was feeling blue, when I was out of sorts, that’s when my friend came to help and that’s when my family came to help. Does he collect butterflies?' Instead they demand 'How old is he? How many brothers has he? How much does he weigh? How much does his father earn?' Only from these figures do they think they have learned about that person. If you were to say to the grown-ups: 'I saw a beautiful house made of rosy brick, with geraniums in the windows and doves on the roof', they would not be able to get any idea of the house at all. The rain has slowed down, it’s only drizzling. I find one of those French cafes, one of those sidewalk cafes. I pick a table outside, order a coffee, light up my cigarette and stare into the rain. All those little drops. Where do they come from? Where are they gonna end up? If only I could meet someone, someone new, someone I could talk to for hours, without looking at my watch. Across the street, around the corner, there’s a little bookshop. I wanna pick a book and read it maybe…This Parisian girl greets me in French of course “ Bonjour” “Hello, parlez-vous Anglais?” I’ve learned this much in my first week in Paris. There’s something about the way she talks. The way she carries herself. As she hands me a book, it reads “Before the coffee gets cold” I start reading the book, I’m in my element. This guy in the book.. so much like me this guy. I identify with him. Paris, the streets of Paris, the book, and the rain….

What a claim to fame — being the person who helped the world’s greatest composer shuffle off the mortal coil... The circumstances of Beethoven’s death are one thing. What I really find fascinating, though, is the mythology and mystery that surrounds it. For a start, that Monday afternoon had some suitably dramatic weather. Vienna was ravaged by a vicious thunderstorm and, as Beethoven’s friends waited silently around his bed, it would have been to the sound of rain drumming the window. We’re not sure exactly how many of these friends were in the room. Beethoven’s closest friend, Anselm Hüttenbrenner, was probably one of them, as was his sister in law. And Beethoven’s brother Johann and his secretary Karl Holz were around too. Which probably accounts for how many different versions there are of Beethoven’s last words. One story is that he said, “Applaud, my friends, the comedy is over!” Another is that, talking about his deafness, he said “I shall hear in heaven!” Or that he shook his fist in anger at the heavens in the moments before death. It’s most likely that his last words were a lot less showy, less dramatic. A friend brought a case of wine for him, and he is recorded having said “Pity, pity... too late.” I wonder if it was that lead stuff he liked drinking.
