On the program part one of a two part conversation with Bud Provin from Nickwackett Garage in Vermont. Bud was one of the first guests on the program when we launched a few years back, so if you are wanting to learn more about Bud and his personal history, dig into the show archives. Today though, we’ll be asking Bud to go in the way-back machine and recall his days as a certified tech at both Bob’s BMW and his own shop to reminisce about design changes on 247 models from 1978-1984. Additionally and just as informative, we’ll start out the show with a discussion on ignition systems—starting with traditional points and going thru evolution of electronic systems.Catch up w/ Bud here:https://thenickwackettgarage.com/bmwtwin/Consider supporting our sponsors make this program possible with their support:Barrington Motor Workswww.barringtonmotorworks.com/Boxer 2 Valve / William Plam:www.boxer2valve.com/Join the BMW MOA for FREE!Use this code-- airheads247--in the link below:bmwmoaf.givingfuel.com/memberforcesOther Moto BMW MOA Podcastswww.bmwmoa.org/page/digitalcontentVisit our website for additional content and the 247 Store:airhead247.comDrop us line:airheads247@hotmail.com

On the program this time we remember Brook Reams, who passed on June 13, 2025. How many times did so many of us reference his YouTube channel and website?..... countless. Brook’s work provided immense detail and inspired confidence to tackle the most basic and sometimes complicated jobs. Question about a part number or assembly procedure—odds are it’s there. Through those works, he left us a great record that will continue to inspire us and keep the 247 relevant for years to come. In this program we'll revisit the first interview with Brook which aired back in August of 2022, a sort of origin story, if you will. In addition, we’ll hear from his son Branden and longtime friend Matt Norman from EME. Last episode we introduced you to my dear friend, Upe. Now, t’s time to hear Upe’s interview with Hans Muth. Airhead aficionados know Hans produced designs for legendary BMW motorcycles including the R90S, R100RS, R 80 G/S and R65 LS. Muth’s work and landmark styling were key to helping BMW maintain viability with its Motorrad division in the 1970s and early 80s. One note about this interview—the audio signal we had for Hans leaves a bit to be desired and we apologize for this on the front end. Yes, it sounds like it's coming thru the original trans-Atlantic cable—but—we had one chance to get Hans for this and had to roll with it.Normally we’d not air audio with this signal quality but we are making an exception and for good reason. We’d originally planned to visit w/ Hans in person last year but his travel to the US was put on hold at the time.Visit our website for additional content and the 247 Store:airhead247.com/Drop us line:airheads247@hotmail.comJoin the BMW MOA for FREE!Use this code-- airheads247--in the link below:bmwmoaf.givingfuel.com/memberforces

It's part two of our chat with Grammy Nominated musician and airhead enthusiast Hans Christian. Of course we’ll chat with Duck about that but also and maybe more importantly, we’ll discuss what clubs like the ABC mean to the lasting legacy and popularity of the 247 airhead. On the program this week, Chuck Sherman who is an engineer by trade and falls into what maybe called the “professional hobbyist” category when it comes to airheads. I came across Chuck on ADV where he posts as "wallaman" and was intrigued by his posts on both Krauser 4V heads and the Krauser MKM 1000 motorcycle. And while Chuck will shy away from being called an “expert” on Krauser history and product development , safe to say that you’ll find this a VERY informative episode on all things Krauser performance.

I met Leo Goff about 30 years ago, not long after I moved to Memphis, TN. He kept my /5, 77 RS and other bikes running when I was too young, inexperienced and without tools or a garage to do it myself. As I got to know him a bit more, I discovered that Leo was an excellent bass player as well and we ended up playing a number of gigs together over the years. In addition to working as an independent mechanic and motorcycle dealer, Leo is also known for his Norton Drag Bike and his expertise as a master head re-builder and mechanic at Memphis Motor Werks. Today, Leo is semi-retired but still twisting wrenches on select jobs and can be seen playing bass on Beale St. in Downtown Memphis.

Leo Goff parts 1 & 2 do contain airhead and motorcycle content which we’ll dig into more in part 2. For part 1, we’ll hear the story of Leo Goff and his life in mechanics, motorcycles and music this week on the Airhead 247 podcast.

Apologies for the delay. Issues with service providers have delayed the release of this episode.

Robert Sabel grew up in London and developed an affinity for German air cooled motors while working on vintage Porsches with his father. After a move to the U.S, his passion turned to air cooled motors on motorcycles when he fell into an R75/5 as part of a deal to buy a 911. That fateful purchase in turn launched Roughchild Motorcycles in 2014. Roughchild’s custom builds might be best described as an Airhead 247 re-imagined with modern technology and built to exacting standards without compromise. Think of a Singer Porsche 911 as an automotive analogy. Robert has a real love for the 247 and not just in a custom built form. You’ll hear that in our visit this week. It’s Robert Sabel of Roughchild Motorcycles on the Airhead 247 Podcast.

As a motorcycle aficionado let's assume it's a safe bet you scour the internet looking at bikes for sale--probably on a daily basis. Recently one website has gained a ton of traffic and always seems to have some very presentable classics for sale, that’s Bring a Trailer. Now, this episode is not about BaT necessarily but about a fella called David Lee who has listed and sold nearly a dozen classic airheads over the past 3 or 4 years on BaT.

I’ve always been impressed with his offerings and attention to detail on the bikes he lists. I met David when he contacted me about a 76 60/6 I had for sale a few years back. He did not buy the bike but we ended up having a great phone chat and found out we had additional concentric circles, aside from our love of classic BMWs---that was our history as touring musicians. We’ll explore David’s history as a musician, how he got started with airheads and chat about his philosophy of buying and selling classic bikes.

Our guest this week is Anton Largiader who owns and operates Virginia Motorrad Werkstatt (motorcycle workshop) in Charlottesville, Virginia. He specializes in BMW transmission and final drive repair but also functions as a full service workshop for all BMW motorcycles. His technical reference website (largiader.com) is a often referred to database that covers both classic airhead and late model BMW mechanical and electrical systems and is a fantastic reference site that is updated on a regular basis. We’ve got links to both sites in the''about” section of this podcast. Anton is a longtime member and contributor on Adventure Rider and regularly posts in the Airhead form and many others, under his own moniker.

I first met Anton in 2015 when he diagnosed an oil pressure problem on a monolever R 80 G/S, which you’ll hear about in this interview. Bud Provin is the 3rd generation owner and operator of the Nickwackett Garage in Pittsford, Vermont where he services and supplies parts for classic BMW airheads and classic Triumph twins. Bud is a regular contributor on ADV Rider and posts as “bmwwrench” a very appropriate name. His posts are poignant---and most often--- spot on when folks are troubleshooting a particular problem.

Bud’s history and extensive experience with airheads and early K bikes is impressive. He worked in his fathers shop when they were an early BMW distributor for Butler and Smitt and later went to work as a master tech for Bob’s BMW, so he has first hand experience as BMW transitioned from a single distributor with Butler and Smith into the “modern era” with BMW of North America.
