In today's episode Justin and Will have not explaining enough about how technology is impacting the AEC industry, and how they see modern businesses, construction companies, specifically really honing in on how they can operate their technology.
They will answer these questions;
Modern day construction companies are thinking and understanding that they need to spend on technology, what there is one other one other item, there's a few items actually as to why modern construction companies and modern AC companies spend money on technology, because they want to bring new fresh blood, new talent, and you know, what your talent is looking for, even the interns. They're looking for that new technology they're expecting it. If they walk in, and it looks like everything is 10 years old, do you think that they're going to want to stay at your company?
A few tips that Will shared was about making sure that your technology spending is broken up into five categories because if you don't then you will not be able to make any real adjustments or corrections when things are not working perfectly for you and you need to make proper decisions for your company.
Categories for Your P&L
The reason to separate it out, you can make decisions on should you do more in terms of business continuity, should you do more in terms of cybersecurity.
Another reason why is the risk, big companies that understand the risk to not having everything in place.
There are so many reasons to have your IT all buttoned up and tune in this week to learn more.

LEAD. DEVELOP. RETAIN.
With more than 40 years of practical leadership experience and a Ph.D. in Global Leadership & Entrepreneurship, Dr. Troy Hall's passion is helping others succeed. His consulting and executive coaching sessions have positively impacted organizational leaders around the globe on how to create cultures of cohesion to retain their top talent.
In this episode Dr. Troy was sharing some incredible information. This is an episode that you truly do not want to miss a single minute.
An organized organization might believe that everything is running exactly how it should be. Dr. Troy would ask you to really rethink that. You may have some elements, but you may not have it all.
Where is you benchmark?
What would it look like if you upped the ante?
A few eye opening numbers that really makes sense behind the scenes that organizations around the globe, that do not have cohesively functioning teams, they're very dysfunctional. They spend about $7 TRILLION annually on teams that just simply aren't getting along, that aren't working, that may be do something together, you might think they're working, but they're really not humming in the way that you would have a well oiled machine do for your expenses of employment.
When people are moving from one job to the next, you see a 50% drag to your bottom line based on the overall value for that position. So if it's a $60,000 position, you're spending an additional $30,000 to replace that person.
Mind blowing... So what if we spend some of that money on retention instead?

Have you heard of executive roundtables in the construction space? Why would somebody want to be involved in one of those?
Executive roundtable is a group of companies that are similar in type of work, similar in size, but geographically diverse. So there's no competitive overlap.
It's an opportunity for the owners or presidents of those companies to get together with people in their exact seat and talk about their business. They're best practices, sometimes bad practices. They in the context of lessons learned, then help each other, advise each other, provide insight back and forth, they'll compare everything from financials, insurance costs, labor costs, and they're not looking to steal ideas from each other, they're looking really to help each other out. The contribute to each other's success. And oftentimes the members will come in, and they'll have a problem and it can be the same problem others are having and they're getting advice from people that are in their exact seat.
For most other in most advisory roles, your attorney, your accountant, your IT professional, your HR consultant, anybody else people use for their business, they see the business through a specific lens. At the roundtable other business owners or other executives, they see it through that same umbrella.
Getting advice from people in that position is very unique. And so it's a big advantage for those organizations that are in a in a roundtable.
Projects around the world take so many people and companies but people so often do not talk. They have no one-on-one interaction. So if there's two organizations and they're doing an alliance or they're building a project together, the first thing that they need is dialogue. Dialogue around the commonality; What are the goals? Are we on the same page? And going through that and talking about that and putting it on a whiteboard or documenting that, and then just getting clarity because that's where a lot is achieved right there. It's just the understanding of what's important from one organization's perspective to the other.
And these were only a few topics of our interview with Eric. Tune in this week to hear the whole conversation. You do not want to miss this episode it is a good one.

Great leaders are not rare treasures you have to find and dig up.
Instead, they are fruits you have to nurture and grow.
Where there is a need to fill many different leadership positions in order to cover all levels of an organization, going on “expeditions” in search of these leaders can prove rather expensive.
Not only will you be spending time and money on new hires you’ve yet to trust, you’ll also be wasting untapped leadership potential of great people already working with you.
Wally Adamchik graces us today with wisdom on why raising leaders from within your organization is a worthwhile investment with high exponential returns.
Wally is the President of Firestarter Speaking Consulting, a consulting firm focused on leadership and productivity in the construction industry.
Wally knows leadership and construction. He often worked with his father and brother, both of whom are master craftsmen, in construction. He also served as an Officer of the Marines. And he worked as a Senior Consultant with FMI, management consultants to the construction industry, where he was highly recognized by clients for his practical, profitable, and powerful solutions.
Through his experiences, Wally was able to build a solid foundation for leadership programs that actually offer significant, recognizable returns for leadership candidates and their respective organizations. The same experiences allow him to address the gaps in leadership within the construction space.
Truly, effective leadership at all levels is the one non-negotiable element for real business success. Which means scaling your business entails growing competent leaders who can attend to the increasing needs of your organization.
What is the Success Triangle? How should technology, people and process interact with each other in order to benefit your business? What kind of returns should you expect from investing in leadership and consulting programs?

The hands get the job done but the mouth gets you the job.
The construction space is usually synonymous to hard work and labor.
At the base level, there’s not much room for talking, besides delivering instructions and reports.
“Less talk and more work”, isn’t that the traditional way of thinking ingrained in most of us?
However, once you think like an entrepreneur, and you’ve got a business to grow, you start to realize the importance of having conversations and building connections.
In today’s episode, we’re honored to have Rosemary Swierk share with us secrets to her success in the construction space!
Rosemary is the President and Founder of Direct Steel Construction, a commercial General Contracting, Construction Management and Owner’s Representative firm.
Rosemary didn’t start off with a large book of business. In fact, she had to go out of her way to find contracts and connections. Because during the time Direct Steel Construction was only beginning, nobody was building due to the bad economy…
Nobody except the US Government!
The private sector wasn’t building, but after following the money trail, Rosemary found that the government had many projects on the market.
It wasn’t easy landing a contract. To get work, Rosemary and her team needed experience, but you need work to get experience. Never the less, they persisted until they found that one contract that will give them a chance – a chance that would launch Direct Steel Construction to the level of success they enjoy today!
How does Rosemary keep growing her contact list? Is diversification the key to future-proofing your business in the AEC industry? How does articulation and proper communication impact your value proposition and the market?

True alignment is often taken for granted.
In almost every business, different departments and their members focus solely on their OWN work, with barely any consideration for how their work will affect the company’s goals.
And so, you might be having all these alignment meetings in place, but if the “Divisions” in your company go beyond task allocation and starts to include mindsets, it’ll remain difficult to achieve your company goals.
This phenomenon isn’t for lack of accountability clauses, mission-vision, company goals included in mandates, nor alignment meetings…
It’s from a lack of greater understanding AND appreciation for that unified goal – which in turn, is due to a lack of proper communication.
What’s the secret to alleviating this barrier?
Building a culture that incorporates an effective means of communication!
This begins with understanding Operational and Technical Truths and how these affect communications.
These truths are products of different perspectives (Management VS Subordinate, Operations VS IT, Etc.)
Your objective is to bridge the gap between these two – where you’re able to fully communicate the intent/purpose of the conversation to your technical personnel, and elicit the exact response you need as a manager to further your operational activities.
What’s the difference between Operational and Technical Truths? What are best practices for bridging the gap between these two? What other considerations are there when it comes to aligning people, processes, and technology?

Some of the best innovations in any industry are rooted in proven and tested systems and processes.
Many young minds get burnt out trying to develop better solutions for prevalent problems in their own industries from scratch; most fail to see that the answer may already be existing…it just requires a little tweak.
Knowing when to change an entire “engine” and when to tweak and clean is not only economical,l but also practical.
Getting rid of the “old”, in search of better ways to do business, can easily become a huge waste of perfectly effective and efficient resources.
In this episode, we’ve got Pat Whelan sharing years-worth of nuggets to help the New Breed of AEC Industry Leaders make the most informed and educated business decisions that will transcend generational barriers.
Pat is a serial entrepreneur – ran a successful general contracting company for 18 years before establishing paskr, a web-based construction software for streamlining and automating the construction building process.
Pat has gracefully made his exit from both firms after 18 years (each), with a hefty sum of best practices in tow – everything the future leaders of AEC need to know to scale their businesses through the path of least resistance.
What best practices in the AEC industry (will) continue to be relevant despite rapidly changing demands in the market?
What factors influence the need to tweak VS change existing systems and processes?
How should you bridge the generational gap among professionals in the industry?

Culture shouldn’t be forced. It should be natural and self-sustaining.
There’s a huge difference between an authentic culture and a fabricated one.
From the get-go, these two will look all too similar!
Everyone’s saying they’re businesses are “built on trust”, and no one’s shy in showcasing this motto on every bit of Ad collateral they employ.
That’s the problem…everyone’s saying the same thing! But only a rare few, like Nate Piper and GRS Pros can walk the talk!
Nate is the Founder and CEO of Greenlight Restoration Solution (GRS) Pros, a remodeling company that offers services such as living space remodeling, water damage repair, mold remediation, designing and building.
Here’s what makes GRS Pros the successful and trusted company that they are today…
Nate has built a culture wherein “Built on Trust” IS NOT just a motto – it’s actually the (ONLY) way they do business and they’ve positively transformed countless lives as a result of their ethics!
Beyond the paper and the Ad Campaigns, GRS Pros display of trust resonates with employees and clients alike, and this authentic demonstration has given birth to the scalability that their company now enjoys!
The challenge in building a culture is finding the perfect fit for your people’s personalities and goals. Nate has outlined for us how culture is practically created through best practices in hiring, development of systems and processes, and leveraging technology.
With a natural and sustainable culture that everyone strongly believes in, GRS Pros has become home to the “3-Right Guarantee – We’ll do the Job RIGHT, at the RIGHT price, and if anything goes wrong, we’ll make it RIGHT!”

Success is a result of efficiently leveraging patterns – abundant in chaos – to create order that leads to growth.
Patterns naturally occur in the world we live in.
We’re in no shortage of things like fractals and tessellations, waves, cracks and ripples.
However, to the untrained eye and the clouded mind, everything seems to occur uniquely, randomly, and by chance.
It’s no wonder that we often attribute the success of the rare few to “a stroke of luck”.
But when we take the time to dissect the tales of businesses and leaders who’ve succeeded in reaching the apex of their respective industries, we see that patterns emerge!
And that is our ultimate goal here:
Identify proven and tested patterns of success, derived from stories and experiences of successful organizations and individuals, and recreate them to scale our businesses!
In this episode, we recap common themes that contributed to the successes of industry leaders (and their businesses) who were gracious enough to share their journeys with us.
Trials and challenges, structures, processes and systems, attitude and mindset towards people, process, and technology, are just some of the factors that we need to consider to make sense of the “chaos” that is business.
What’s the secret sauce to process development? What common denominator can we derive from unique minds of successful industry leaders? What are the best practices in terms of engaging technology?

Most industries don’t discriminate. People do!
There are hardly any jobs that require a specific gender (think of roles in the entertainment sector, a few sport careers, catholic priests). And so, one might wonder:
“Why are most industries/jobs male-dominated?”
The truth is that it has nothing to do with the capacity of women. This phenomenon is more related to the amount of guidance and support that women receive in terms of finding a career/securing their place in almost any given industry, including the AEC.
Thankfully, many agencies in the private and public sectors have been working on ways to tear down these barriers!
Educational institutions have come up with better programs, like career counseling and mentorship programs, that provide women with the knowledge and information they need to be competitive in different male-dominated industries. The government has also done its part by passing laws that combat discrimination.
However, we’ve still got ways to go before we can achieve a state of equity in career opportunities. This issue isn’t a single organization’s battle…it’s ours, as a society, as humans.
Tiffany Sharp, Owner of Sharp Construction, LLC, a young woman-led fast-growing commercial general contractor in Phoenix, AZ, is one of many great leaders attending to this cause.
Sharp Construction pioneered the “Girls Can Build” Initiative – a program for girls with workshops, tools and mentorship that teach building skills, basics of the design and build process and career opportunities in the industry – in partnership with the Girl Scouts – Arizona Cactus-Pine Council.
The hope is that these programs will empower women, even from an early age, to pursue careers in AEC, find success in the industry, all while filling a huge gap in the demand for multiple positions across the industry.
This initiative is but one of many benefits that Sharp Construction gets to experience (and share with the community) as a result of scaling their business!
What experiences paved the way for Sharp Construction’s success? How has the company’s investment choices impacted their scalability? What other benefits come from scaling your business?

Holistic growth…
Take care of the body like you’d care for the mind.
Can’t be all study while you let the body rot away!
You need to move. You have to be fit enough! Because how else will you enact what your mind thinks if the body is too frail to keep up? How do you expect to take care of others when you can’t take care of yourself?
Not too far from what any business demands, really!
Where you are the head/mind of your business, your people are autonomous “body parts” who make the business “move”. You need to empower them and give them the proper care so that they respond to make your vision come true.
On this episode, we’ve got Greg Patch from LJA Engineering, an Engineering News-Record Top 100 National Firm offering full-service engineering and consulting services to public and private sector clients, to share with us the best way to empower your people and make them accountable for theirs and your business’s futures, ultimately leading to continuous growth and success of the business.

Greg shares that as an entity, LJA is on a mission to design results and deliver purpose-driven projects for their clients and employee-owners in all communities they serve.
Why have employee-owners?
Because company ownership builds loyalty, motivates people to perform their best, and fosters an environment where employees and clients have mutual respect and interest in the successful outcome of each project.
Satisfied, fulfilled personnel care about the jobs they do and the future of their company. LJA takes care of their employees, so their employees can devote their best to taking care of the clients.
Simply put, LJA best achieves their mission by creating an environment that fosters holistic growth for each participant in the business, directly resulting in the continuous success and growth of their business.

Gone are the days when businesses can be without computers and the internet.
Things were definitely so much simpler back in the day!
Sure, we all use tools and technology. What’s an engineering or construction business without the lifts and the cranes, the mixers and the excavators? And what’s an architectural design firm without CAD, T-squares, drafting tech pens and compasses.
However, you used to be able to run a business without heavily investing in so many computers and softwares and internet connectivity.
But as computers evolved, as the online space grew, and as the internet became more accessible, markets changed!
And so, businesses also had to change.
The internet revolution has definitely made so many significant positive changes in the business world, but it also gave rise to new threats.
Unfortunately, many businesses remain (deliberately or unintentionally) ignorant about looming threats within the online spaces that they now occupy.
That’s why we’ve made it our mission to deliver you a simplified version of:
Things You NEED to KNOW About the Online Space and how you can better protect your business so you can keep on scaling!
What is CyberSec? What is Ransomware as a Service? How are cyber threats toppling even the powerhouses in the AEC industry?
At the end of the day, you need to understand that your business can easily be caught in the crossfire in an “invisible war”.
Learning more about the online space and investing in CyberSec has become non-negotiable and is key for business continuity and future success!
Discover how to future-proof your business today!

DIVERSITY should not be a mere trend…
It should be part of a way of life – that which promotes individual growth of employees, high quality services leading to TRUE customer satisfaction, and scaling your business.
The problem is ever since the executives and business owners caught wind of the term, “Diversity” has been thrown around a lot until it lost its true meaning and value.
It’s easy create a business that employs people from different background, sex and gender, ethnicity, etc., but is that the end-all and be-all?
What most entrepreneurs fail to see is that diversity, on its own, cannot create the huge impact you expect it to have in your KPIs, and ultimately, your business’s health.
Creating an environment where your diverse work force can thrive is crucial to creating that impact; that environment can be achieved when you build a culture that practices EQUITY and INCLUSION!
And that’s exactly what Sam Clark had in mind as he led Clark Construction Company to its current state of success!
Sam Clark is part of the 3rd generation in his family to manage Clark Construction, and is the current President and CEO of the company.
He served in the U. S. Army from 1991 to 1994 and was stationed in Fort Lewis, Washington. Upon his honorable discharge, Sam enrolled in Northern Michigan University where he obtained a B. S. in Building Construction Management.
Sam joined Clark Construction Company as a Project Manager in 1996 and has held progressive roles during his rise to President/CEO. During his career, Sam has been involved in many market sectors and is most notably known for his expertise in casino, resort venues.
Through developing, implementing, and living our core values, Sam has proven himself as a visionary leader within the organization. The company mission “We Build on a Foundation of Trust” aligns the team in success. Sam has led the organization through significant cultural changes with a strategic focus on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI).
Today Clark Construction reaps the many benefits of DEI integration.
How does DEI impact company KPIs? What other benefits is there when you infuse DEI into the company culture? What other key ideas contributed to Clark Construction’s massive growth and current success?

Building a sustainable and inclusive Company Culture should be a lifetime commitment, not a trend.
The new era of entrepreneurs has gotten wind of this terminology and have been throwing it a lot in meetings and general assemblies and press conferences. We hear it all the time!
What’s hard to swallow is that such a critical part of any business is only being given lip service.
Business owners have this misconception that throwing in a pinball machine, a fancy pantry and an employee lounge defines their company’s culture.
What they fail to see is that culture is about the interactions. It’s about building a system that fosters attitudes and behavior that effectively caters to the needs of business just as much as the needs of the people in any business.
What makes John Arndt and DWC Construction so admirable is the fact that the culture they speak of is one that is truly experienced – seen, felt and heard – by owners, employees, and customers alike!
John Arndt is the 4th and current CEO of DWC Construction, Tennessee’s go-to general contracting firm for creating commercial interior spaces. John has been with the company for 41 years, and DWC is celebrating its 75th anniversary this year.
John and DWC are definitely a perfect fit, seeing as both have been given outstanding acknowledgements, with John being recognized as Most Admired CEO (5 times in the last 6 years) by Nashville Business Journal, and DWC as one of the Top Places to Work (in the last 4 years) by The Tennessean.
One does not simply garner all these years in the industry and all these commendations. It takes a high-level of excellence to get this far!
What’s the Secret Sauce?
John and DWC have focused their efforts into building a solid company culture that takes care of the business, clients and employees’ needs at no expense of the others!
Their great company culture is one that has persisted through time because it is rooted in a simple yet strong foundation: genuine care and compassion.
The culture is experienced by everyone involved in the business, through their company mission and core values, employee programs, customer care, products and services.
And so, what are these best practices worth emulating? How do you practically apply the culture of being passion-driven? How does this culture tie in with their business model? How does culture truly and positively impact business growth?

Why is it that people in the AEC industry have a tendency to be non-entrepreneurial?
Scratch that…
Why are there entrepreneurs in almost every (if not all) industries that focus too much on the technical side of things and pay poor attention to the financial aspect?
This is a common mistake we see among entrepreneurs. They’re trying to scale their companies by going after any and every opportunity they can get their hands on.
The problem here is that they're not managing a business like a business. They're managing it like a job!
They keep pouring in ideas about how projects MIGHT BE completed from their professional perspective, not taking into account if the business itself has the capacity in terms of manpower, logistics, budget, among other key components to actualizing a plan.
Are the projects feasible? In theory, they almost always are! But before shooting for a project, there’s a need to respect and recognize all possible outcomes, including the worst-case scenarios – and that doesn’t make you a pessimist…it makes you a well-informed entrepreneur.
Exactly what Chris Winterhalter is, and what makes for a very successful business, like Hotel Rehabs, LLC, a nationwide hotel renovation company specializing in branded and independent boutique projects. Hotel Rehabs is a close knit, tightly-held firm that prides itself on its strong business relationships and ability to meet customer needs at the highest value.
Chris Winterhalter is the CEO and co-founder of Hotel Rehabs, LLC, a national hotel renovation contractor based in Chicago. Since 2010, Chris has completed dozens of major branded hotel projects across the country, from New York to San Diego.
Besides his bountiful experience in the industry, what makes Chris, and subsequently Hotel Rehabs, a force to reckon with in the industry is his ability to recognize the worst-case scenarios which allows him to create solutions before any problems actually surface, thus leading to the best-case scenario.
On top of that, Chris believes that scalability is a mindset. A company doesn’t scale simply because it can take on any and all projects. In niching down and taking specialized projects, Hotel Rehabs was able to create a highly demanded premium service that’s key to scaling the business!
What other key strategies does Hotel Rehabs implement to secure the possibility of exponential growth? How does a well-structured internal recruitment engine tie in to the business’s success? What makes Chris’s mindset regarding scalability uniquely powerful?

Successful businesses build their foundations centered on customers.
It's not just about pricing nor product. It's about giving the customers the best overall experience as they journey with your company.
As a business owner, you have to pay attention to how you personally interact with clients. However, you're not always around to do the walking and talking…
That's why it's crucial for your people to exude the same positive energy that resonates with customers. But without a good work environment, your people may have difficulties in meeting those expectations.
Building a solid work environment is laying down a strong foundation for having a highly engaged, productive team. When your team loves WORKING WITH you, they‘re able to go above and beyond what’s asked of them to make sure your clients receive the best possible experience. That’s how you keep customers coming back!
And that’s how Hard Rock Concrete Cutters built their impressive reputation!
Let’s dig into the brilliant mind behind Hard Rock’s success!
Jim Dvoratchek is the President and Co-Founder of Hard Rock Concrete Cutters, Inc., a business that provides Professional Concrete Sawing, Grinding, Coring and Scanning services. As the President of the CSDA (Concrete Sawing and Drilling Association) from 1999-2001 and again from 2011-2013, Jim has been a leader in the Concrete Sawing and Drilling industry for more than 35 years.
According to Jim, “Creating a Safety First Culture is the Most Important Thing we do every day.”
At Hard Rock, the goal is to focus on customers and their needs, and to make Hard Rock the best place to work for employees and their families. That’s 2 birds with one solid rock!
With more than 35 years of experience, Hard Rock Concrete Cutters has steadily grown into one of the most trusted names in Midwest construction. Whether coring in tight spaces or salvaging historic architectural façades, clients count on Hard Rock to do the job exactly the way they want it done – safely, professionally, on time, and on budget.
The concept of being customer-centric is hardly new. What’s truly interesting are the processes and strategies that ensure the concept works!
What’s the secret to their foundation? How does Hard Rock maintain a solid lead against competitors? How do they circumvent the Contractor’s Dilemma? Why should you emulate Hard Rock’s framework?

“How do I know I need a CFO?”
“Well, do you have a business?”
If YES, then you definite do!
Because your financial statements need more than just a glance. You need to really look into it and see how profitable your business is. After all, you’re in business to make money, not lose it, right?
And the thing is, you can be closing Million Dollar Deals and still lose more money than you’re making – essentially, you can go in the red without even knowing it – if you don’t have someone to show you a picture of your business’s financial health.
Nurses and doctors work hand-in-hand, and have extensive training in their areas of expertise, but nurses ARE NOT the same as doctors. Just like accountants don’t necessarily equate to CFOs, and you need both in your business.
To be honest, only a handful know what a CFO truly does! It’s then worth hearing out Aaron Mills as he explains in-depth what a CFO can, should, and will do to effectively scale your business!
Aaron is the owner of Daaxit, a Fractional CFO services company that focuses on helping contractors. He is an experienced and proven accounting executive with an MBA with over 25 years of expertise in setting and evolving strategies to manage companies through rapidly changing and fast-paced environments.
Aaron works with established general contracting company owners to enhance profitability by providing financial transparency for decision-making, controlling expenses, and managing assets and liabilities. He provides financial oversight by ensuring financial integrity for all accounting records to you the owner, regulatory agencies, and shareholders.
The financial side of the business alone can be a huge headache when you don’t have the proper support. As a business owner, you want to be focusing on managing the business. CFO is one of the hats you definitely want to delegate to an expert who will help you figure out how to effectively grow and scale your business!
What’s the scope of a CFO’s responsibilities? What does it mean to “Grow Broke”? What is Financial Clarity and why do I need it in my business? How do I go around the "Contractor’s Dilemma"?
Interested in what a CFO can do for you?

The best strategies are built from experience.
In war, you make do of what you have, you come up with the most viable options based on your knowledge of the terrain and what you’ve observed from your enemies. Of course, you can expect the opposition to know the same. And so, if you want to advance your campaign and beat your opponents, you also need to think outside the box.
It’s the same in business, really. Considering what you’ve been through, what you know about the competition and the industry, you leverage these to come up with the best possible strategy to grow your business.
But no one ever said you couldn’t take a leaf out of someone else’s book. Another’s experience is still experience.
And that’s exactly what Gary Cosmer did when planning for LOVETT Inc.’s strategic growth plan!
LOVETT is an iconic construction brand out of Portland, Oregon. In 1997, family and neighbors loaned founder Dale Lovett the funds to buy a single excavator and a dump truck, a purchase that would launch a successful, multi-faceted company of over 100 employees and innovators committed to exceptional service in the construction industry.
This company’s evolution is marked by both gradual and decisive change. LOVETT has shown tactical growth, adding departments and different services as they are complementary to create a valuable one-stop shop for customers. Today their services include: Drill, Plumbing, Drain, Excavation, Restoration, Construction, Mitigation, and Vacuum Truck Services. And while they’ve broadened services, they’ve managed to retain a commitment to expertise and innovation.
In 2018, LOVETT welcomed Gary Cosmer as a partner, President, and COO. Gary leverages his experience with Private Equity firms to bring something new to the construction industry, like Funding + Merger And Acquisition Strategies. He is a true expert in operations, with a great eye for detail and a mind that’s trained to think outside the box.
Besides leveraging his prior experiences, Gary ushered in a new era for LOVETT by integrating processes from other successful brands into their own, much like how he utilized the 5 Principles of Lean Manufacturing and the Toyota Manufacturing Model to not only bring back manufacturing to US soil, but also beat offshore labor costs while increasing their profits.
What other PE concepts did Gary use to further the business? How does Toyota’s Manufacturing Model fit into construction? What other strategies can you incorporate into your own business?

Let get one thing straight...
Mental illnesses don’t equate to poor work performance. In fact, it’s more likely that these illnesses can be harnessed to become an edge that drives productivity and success, especially with the right guidance and support.
That’s where the Affluminder Movement comes along.
Yeah! We got you with Affluminder!
And we know it because that’s what caught our attention too!
So, what is an Affluminder? It’s a combination of 3 words, said Jeff Meyers, that come together to mean “a person who has a free flowing, unique mind and still lives as a respected individual without the burden of society’s stigma”.
Jeff Meyers is a proud Affluminder, and is part of the team that coined the term and started the movement. Despite being diagnosed with Bipolar Disorder, Jeff remains a brilliant mind who has much impact to create in business and society. He is the Majority Owner and CEO of DS Architecture, and has been listed on Building Design + Construction’s 40 under 40.
As an individual, Jeff aspires to win the coveted Nobel Peace Prize together with his wife, by positively transforming lives through the Affluminder Movement.
As an entrepreneur, Jeff is about bolstering their company image of being the "Premier Culture Based Design Firm". DS Architecture, as a firm, believes that people will always matter more than profits, and they believe in radical transparency and candor with safe autonomy.
But wait…
What does the Affluminder Movement have to do with DS Architecture? How can mental illnesses be harnessed to produce your cutting edge? What makes Affluminders significantly successful and how do they impact businesses?

We’ve been working with businesses and startups on growth strategy for years, and we've noticed that successful businesses have certain philosophies they employ when making business decisions. The philosophies are generally very simple, but the implications of them can be profound.
It’s these beliefs that can make or break a business, as they heavily influence how you respond to key questions you’ll encounter as you scale your business.
There are different philosophies being employed by many successful business owners. The challenge is finding those that sit well with your values as an individual and also benefits the growth of your company.
We’re joined today by Aimee Carpenter to discuss the philosophies she employed to skyrocket her business towards success, and this is the perfect opportunity to pick her brain about what you can apply in your business to generate your own success.
Aimee is the owner, CEO and Co-Founder of Solterra Solar, a Seattle based Solar Energy contractor.
She leads a team of 25 people to bring solar design and installation services to homeowners and business owners across WA state. Her leadership has helped grow the company to over 2000 installed solar customers. She has been an entrepreneur in the construction industry since 2004 and is passionate about using her entrepreneurial expertise for the greater good.
How much are you willing to spend on hiring costs? How will you approach relationship building with clients and with your people? Will you take different approaches or will a singular approach meet the demands of the various relationships? And what of data? How will you leverage these to effectively scale your company?
These are just some of the pressing questions Aimee needed to respond to, with clear cut action plans guided by brilliant philosophies that ultimately allowed her to conquer the challenges she faced as an entrepreneur.

Technology is rapidly changing the way we live and work—and its pace shows no sign of slowing down.
In fact, according to IBM’s “Five in Five” list of forecasted innovation breakthroughs, developed by IBM’s Institute of Science and Technology, the world will change more in the next five years than it has in the last 50.
You’ve personally experienced it, right? How technology strongly influences demands in the market?
See how we’re inclined to lean towards businesses who can quickly deliver high quality products and services right at your doorstep?
It’s the quality, efficiency and accessibility that technology offers…those are game changers!
Knowing the perspective of a consumer (being one yourself), how can you prepare your business to stay ahead of these rapid changes (and the competition)?
By leveraging technology to create a competitive advantage!
That’s exactly what Scott Maloney did for his company and he’s reaping huge amounts of success today!
Scott is the President and Founder of K2M Designs, a dynamic, high-growth Architecture, Engineering, and Interior Design firm with a multi-discipline Facility Assessment division.
The business started 20 years ago, small and heavily reliant on large fixed hardware. Back in 2002, the age of technology was in its early stages. But as technology rose to prominence, so did Scott’s business. By investing more into technology, Scott grew his company to the huge success that it is today.
They leveraged the power of the internet, and incorporated new hardware and software alike into their systems and processes. In doing so, they not only expanded their market reach but also their talent pool.
They now have access to a wide array of experts and professionals with different skillsets, working remotely with them. In turn, they increased the services they provided and the clients they serve – and this is just the tip of their competitive advantage as a result of technology.
What other benefits from technology are K2M enjoying? What challenges do they face due to or in spite of technology? What’s the philosophy behind their great investment decisions?

Being able to leave a beautiful and lasting legacy can be considered the peak of success!
Entrepreneurs and corporate professionals alike know that regardless of industry, there’s always competition, some more cutthroat than others.
In that regard, to be able to stand out from the multitudes of aspiring industry leaders, and to leave your mark in the industry might be the greatest feat anyone can hope to achieve.
But the challenge doesn’t stop there…
Probably the bigger challenge is making sure your beautiful mark doesn’t turn into an ugly gash.
On this episode, we’re joined by Joe Furey, President of Michael Graves Architecture and Designs (MGA&D), to talk about business succession strategies that ensure legacies remain untarnished.
Having over 350 buildings and 300 industry awards under their belt MGA&D is considered one of the leading design practices in the world.
Joe is a CPA with over 30 years of experience in the AEC industry leading business operations, M&A, strategic & financial planning, as well as succession planning. Although not an architect, Joe is placed in the unique position of leading MGA&D through the financial and strategic side of things, thus allowing his peers to focus on the creative side of the business.
In light of Michael Grave’s then declining health (which eventually led to his passing), Joe was called upon to manage the succession planning in order to make sure Michael’s legacy lives on through the business.
Although Michael was able to create a great business structure, some challenges that threatened to tarnish his legacy still arose.
What challenges did Joe discover while he led the succession planning? What strategies did they employ to ascertain the top-quality designs and services they deliver to clients? How has company culture affected the company pipeline?
